Sporting Kansas City at Philadelphia Union – July 11, 2012 – 7:30 p.m. EST LAST U.S. OPEN CUP MATCH

After shocking the Revolution and the Red Bulls in dramatic fashion to earn a US Open Cup quarterfinal date with the Union, the Harrisburg City Islanders discovered a little more magic Tuesday night at PPL Park.

Despite ripping off two goals in the span of two minutes to cut into Philadelphia’s early three-goal lead, the City Islanders were overmatched for most of the night, dropping a 5-2 decision to the suddenly surging Union in a matchup between affiliate clubs.

But even after looking completely overwhelmed in the first half, Harrisburg stormed back to make sure the game wasn’t a blowout. In the 52nd and 54th minutes, Brian Ombiji and Morgan Langley scored back-to-back goals, with forward Yann Ekra assisting on both.

But the Union served up a convincing response to their ex-mates when second-half sub Antoine Hoppenot drew a penalty kick and Pajoy netted the ensuing PK. It was the second straight game in which Hoppenot was fouled in the box and Pajoy provided the finish. The red-hot rookie also scored the game-winner against D.C. United in the Union’s last US Open Cup win.

LAST MATCH VS. SPORTING KANSAS CITY

Behind two goals from Jack McInerney followed by insurance tallies from Lionard Pajoy and Antoine Hoppenot, the Union earned their first points of the John Hackworth era, topping Sporting KC 4-0 Saturday night at PPL Park.

It was a dream start for the Union, who entered the game averaging an MLS-worst 0.67 goals per game. Moments into the contest, Ray Gaddis whipped a dangerous cross to the far post where a crashing Pajoy had too tight of an angle to finish but managed to keep the ball alive. Pajoy's touch put the ball just a few yards in front of Jimmy Nielsen's goal, and McInerney beat the Kansas City goalkeeper to the ball to bury a shot into the top of the net.

Freddy Adu put a free kick into the danger area, where a lunging Carlos Valdes deflected the ball on goal. Nielsen made the initial save, but McInerney was there to put in the rebound for a 2-0 advantage.

The Union added an insurance goal in the 81st minute on a Pajoy penalty kick. Pajoy sent Nielsen diving in the wrong direction and buried his spot kick to put the Union up 3-0.

Hoppenot was rewarded for his efforts with a goal of his own in the 87th minute, when a ball was lofted over Nielsen for the fourth Union goal and the first of his MLS career.

U.S. OPEN CUP FINAL HOSTING SCENARIOS

US Soccer announced possible championship-game scenarios on Friday, regarding the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup finals. Sporting Kansas City holds the best chance of hosting the Cup final at their home stadium. A win against the Union would automatically put the final at Livestrong Sporting Park.

If the Union win, along with Chivas USA, Philadelphia will host the final on August 7 or 8 at PPL Park. However, if the Union defeat Sporting Kansas City and the Seattle Sounders defeat Chivas USA, Philadelphia would travel to Seattle for the final on August 8 at CenturyLink Field.

KEYSTONE STATE HISTORY IN OPEN CUP

In the history of the U.S. Open Cup, the Philadelphia Union are not the first team to make a run for the Open Cup title.

The keystone state has won ten Open Cup titles. Bethlehem Steel F.C. became a dynasty in the early stages of the U.S. Open Cup, winning back to back titles in 1915 and 1916. The Steel won five Open Cup titles including 1918, 1919, and 1926.

The state of Pennsylvania has two other teams that have won the Open Cup, the German Americans and the Philadelphia Ukranians. The German Americans won the Open Cup in 1936, while the Philadelphia Ukranians won four Open Cup titles. The Philadelphia Ukranians won in 1960, 1961, 1963, and 1966.

The Philadelphia Union took on the Harrisburg City Islanders for a second time in two weeks at home on Tuesday June 26th in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup. Philadelphia won 52 against their affiliates after losing the first meeting 3-2 at Hersheypark Stadium in a friendly on June 12th.

The Union advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating the Rochester Rhinos 3-0 on May 29th in the third round and in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup, the Union defeated D.C. United 2-1 on June 5th.

The Union are set to take on Sporting Kansas City on July 11, in a rematch of a 4-0 win for the Union over their Eastern Conference foe. The Union are now two wins away from its first ever U.S. Open Cup title and is the first Pennsylvania-based team to reach the semifinals since United German Hungarians in 1993.

Union interim manager John Hackworth was an assistant coach of the 2003 United States U-17 National team, during Sporting Kansas City’s Michael Harrington and Jacob Peterson tenures with the team.

Union defender Chris Albright and Kansas City’s midfielder Paulo Nagamura were both teammates on the Los Angeles Galaxy during the 2005 MLS Cup victory. o Chris Albright appeared in 116 games for the Galaxy from 2002-2007. o Paulo Nagamura appeared in 54 games for the Galaxy from 2005-2006.

Chris Konopka signed as a member of the Kansas City Wizards in 2007. Konopka stayed with the team for a single season.

Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath and Sporting Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi played at the University of Maryland together. The pair won a National Championship together in 2008 for the Terrapins.

UNION KICK-OFF BUSY MONTH

The match against the Los Angeles Galaxy began a busy month of July for the Union as the West Coast win was the first of four games in 11 days. The Union returned home defeating Toronto FC, 3-0, on July 8 for their second game of the busy stretch, just days before hosting Sporting Kansas City in the semifinal round of the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on July 11.

After the semi-final match against Sporting Kansas City, the Union will only have two days of rest before taking the field at PPL Park against Eastern Conference foe Montreal on July 14. The Union will host Aston Villa in an international friendly on July 18.

The busy month for the blue and gold does not slow down as the Union will travel to New York on July 21. After the All-Star break, the Union will host the New England Revolution on July 29.

“THE 90TH MINUTE” HEADS TO SOUTH PHILADELPHIA

The Philadelphia Union have announced that the “The 90th Minute” will change locations to the Chickie’s & Pete’s in South Philadelphia for the month July.. The first five weeks were broadcasted from PJ Whelihan’s Pub in Cherry Hill, N.J. The event is free and open to the public with on-air broadcasting scheduled from 7:00- 8:00 p.m. and various events such as a Union player meet-and-greet, raffles, prizes and giveaways from 6:00 p.m.- 8:30 p.m.

ANTOINE HOPPENOT

Rookie forward Antoine Hoppenot has appeared in four matches this season, including three straight dating back to the month of May. Hoppenot recorded his first MLS career goal in the 87th minute against Sporting Kansas City on June 26. After entering the match in the 65th against Toronto FC on July 8 for Jack McInerney, the rookie recorded his second career goal in the 78th minute.

The 21-year old Hoppenot has played 85 total minutes in the 2012 season recording four shots and one shot on goal.

The Union signed the forward on February 21, 2012, after the forward was taken 51st overall in the MLS Supplemental Draft. Hoppenot was a three time First-Team AllIvy selection and was ranked 20th on the Top Drawer Soccer Men's National Top 100 list as a senior. In 2010, he was named Ivy League Player of the Year and was a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy, as well as garnered Second-Team AllAmerican honors.
