MATCH PREVIEW Four days removed from a heartbreaking 4-3 loss at Central Division leaders Louisville City FC, Sporting Kansas City II (4-17-8, 20 points) will return to Children’s Mercy Park on Wednesday for their 2021 home finale against Atlanta United 2 (7-12-10, 31 points). The USL Championship clash will kick off at 7 p.m. CT and stream live on ESPN Plus. Nineteen-year-old midfielder Jake Davis was the star of the show in Saturday’s narrow defeat, scoring two excellent goals from long range to punctuate a strong 2021 campaign that has seen the Michigan native shine at the USL Championship level and earn an MLS contract with Sporting’s first team. Sporting KC II also received a stunning strike from rookie Jamil Roberts over the weekend as head coach Paulo Nagamura’s side turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead before surrendering two late scores in the seven-goal thriller. Davis has two goals and a team-leading six assists for Sporting KC II in 2021, while winger Enoch Mushagalusa has a team-best eight goals and is the only player to appear in all 29 USL Championship matches this year. Nagamura has given playing time to a large crop of MLS loanees, Sporting Kansas City Academy products and players under USL Championship contract, and although results have been hard to come by throughout the year, quality performances from the likes of Davis, Mushagalusa, Kayden Pierre, John Pulskamp and Rojay Smith have served as 2021 bright spots.

SKC II INJURY REPORT

QUESTIONABLE: F Ropapa Mensah (groin)

SKC II and Atlanta are on a collision course for the fourth time this season, with both picking up a win and a draw in the first three meetings. Mushagalusa struck twice in an entertaining 2-2 draw on June 9 and bagged the winner in a 1-0 result on July 10. Atlanta exacted revenge on Aug. 14 at Children’s Mercy Park, posting a 4-1 victory with a Phillip Goodrum brace and additional goals from Darwin Matheus and Tyler Wolff, the son of Sporting Legend and current Austin FC head coach Josh Wolff.

SKC II All-time Records

Midfielder Jake Davis scored two brilliant goals and rookie forward Jamil Roberts added a fantastic third as Sporting Kansas City II (4-178, 20 points) suffered a last-gasp 4-3 loss to Central Division leaders Louisville City FC (16-5-7, 55 points) in an instant classic on Saturday night at Lynn Family Stadium. Davis bagged a sensational longrange goal on the cusp of halftime and secured his brace in the 84th minute, mere seconds before Roberts picked out the top corner with a sublime strike from distance as Sporting KC II went from 2-0 down to 3-2 ahead. The last laugh went to Louisville, however, as prolific striker Cameron Lancaster struck twice—including the last-gasp winner in the 94th minute—to give the hosts all three points. Head coach Paulo Nagamura made just one change to his starting lineup from Wednesday’s 3-1 loss at Memphis 901 FC as Petar Cuic stepped in for Jahon Rad. He was part of a midfield triumvirate alongside Davis and 17-year-old Ozzie Cisneros, while the threepronged attack consisted of 16-year-old Mataeo Bunbury, opposite winger Enoch Mushagalusa and center forward Wilson Harris. Goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh was protected by a back four of captain Kaveh Rad, Kayden Pierre, Graham Smith and Isaiah LeFlore. Louisville landed their first punch in the eighth minute. Outside midfielder Brian Ownby chased a long ball over the top and delivered a cutback pass from the right endline that found captain Paolo DelPiccolo, who side-footed a first-time shot inside the near post for his eighth goal of the season. Ownby nearly went from provider to scorer shortly thereafter, planting a close-range header narrowly over the crossbar. McIntosh was harshly penalized on the half-hour mark, whistled for a foul on Ownby inside the penalty area despite winning the ball cleanly in a 50-50 challenge. Cameron Lancaster buried the ensuing spot kick for his 16th goal of the year, fourth-most in the USL Championship.

SKC II Year-by-Year

Sporting KC II gradually gained a foothold of their own and cut their deficit in half with the final consequential kick of the first period. Mushagalusa won possession on the left flank and played a diagonal ball to Davis, who took a touch 28 yards from goal and curled a world-class strike into the top right corner. The magisterial effort gave Davis his first goal of 2021, punctuating a year that has seen the hard-nosed midfielder break into Sporting Kansas City’s first team at the MLS level. The visitors began the second half brightly but could have fallen behind 3-1 in the 56th minute if not for a stunning save from McIntosh. Pat McMahon’s low cross was met by Jimmy McLaughlin on the doorstep, but Sporting KC II’s goalkeeper produced a phenomenal reflex stop to keep his team within a goal.

Davis delivered a man of the match performance over the course of 90 minutes and notched his second goal of the evening in the 84th minute, knotting the game at 2-2 on a feed from Roberts. Only a minute later, Roberts etched his own name on the score sheet when Harris won the ball off a Louisville defender and teed up the Englishman, whose 25-yard strike nestled into the top left corner for his second goal of the campaign. Sporting KC II had stunned the Louisville crowd by turning the match on its head, but head coach Danny Cruz’s side showed its mentality by clawing back. With 88 minutes on the clock, outside back Oscar Jimenez recorded his first goal of the year on Abdou Mbacke Thiam’s first assist of 2021. Both sides exchanged barbs in search of a late winner, which would ultimately fall Louisville’s way deep into secondhalf stoppage time. A searching free kick into the crowded penalty area was nodded across goal by Corben Bone and hammered into the roof of the net by Lancaster, condemning SKC II to heartbreak.

Capable of playing multiple positions in midfield and attack, the diminutive Cisneros boasts technical quality and strong familiarity with Sporting’s 4-3-3 system. He signed as a Homegrown Player in 2021.

He made 54 appearances for the U-17 and U-19 squads over three seasons, tallying eight goals from central midfield. He spent much of the 2020 preseason with the Sporting Kansas City first team before signing his first professional contract with Sporting II before the restart of the season in July. He played in all 15 games after the restart, starting 14 and tallying one assist. His assist came in the only game he appeared as a sub, where he recorded the game-winning assist in a 2-1 road win over Louisville City FC on July 29.

The 2015 MLS SuperDraft selection and Clemson University product made a quick impression for Sporting, logging 27 appearances as a rookie. After an up-and-down 2016, he took the reins as one of the USL Championship’s best outside backs during a three-year stretch in which Phoenix won a regular season title and dominated the league’s Western Conference. Acquired by Sporting in early 2020, Dia landed a starting spot from mid-September onward as Sporting ended the regular season with a 6-1-1 record. Dia also started both matches in the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs, finishing the year with starts in 11 of 15 appearances as well as three shutout contributions. 18

Duke signed for Sporting as a Homegrown Player in the summer of 2019, but a lingering injury that year delayed his professional debut until 2020. Following an early-season stoppage in play due to the pandemic, the U.S. youth international and Overland Park native wasted no time making a positive impression with the first team. Duke landed his Sporting debut at the MLS is Back Tournament in July of 2020. Despite his lack of professional experience, Duke wound up making nine MLS appearances over the course of the season. He notably created six scoring chances in just 224 minutes of action as Sporting went 4-2-2 in the eight regular season matches he played.

A member of the Sporting KC Academy since age 11, Freeman represented Sporting at the U-12 through U-19 levels and represented the U.S. youth national team before kickstarting his pro career. He and teammate Gianluca Busio were notably part of the U.S. squad that finished second at the 2019 Concacaf U-17 Championship in Bradenton, Florida. A versatile youngster who can play multiple positions in attack and midfield, Freeman has yet to earn his first-team debut under Manager Peter Vermes. He has, however, scored three goals in the USL Championship.

In three USL Championship seasons with Sporting Kansas City II, Harris started 39 of 56 appearances and averaged 0.64 goals per 90 minutes played. He was the top-scoring teenager in American professional soccer in 2019, finishing the year with 12 goals in 25 USL Championship appearances. His dozen goals—which included a sizzling run of 10 strikes in his final 11 appearances—equaled the league’s single-season record for a teenager. Harris was the youngest USL Championship player to score eight or more goals in 2020. He signed for Sporting as a Homegrown Player in the fall of 2020.

In 2019, Hernandez became the first Sporting player to progress along the club’s full player pathway, rising from an Academy Affiliate club to the Sporting KC Academy to the Sporting KC II (then the Swope Park Rangers) before signing with the senior team. In three full seasons with Sporting KC II from 2017 to 2019, Hernandez has amassed 13 goals and a club-record 11 assists across 83 USL Championship matches as an all-action midfielder who facilitated the attack but also made life miserable on opponents when they had the ball. Hernandez appeared in 19 of Sporting’s last 21 matches in all competitions during the 2020 season, starting eight. 19

In three USL Championship appearances in 2020, Pierre recorded four interceptions and 10 clearances while winning 77% of his duels and completing 89% of his passes, including three chances created.

A native of Bakersfield, California, Pulskamp developed in the LA Galaxy Academy before signing professionally for Sporting Kansas City II ahead of the 2019 season. He was quick to make a strong impression in the USL Championship, leading Sporting KC II goalkeepers in starts (14), minutes (1,260), wins (four) and saves (45) as a rookie. A native of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, Thompson joined the Sporting KC Academy in the summer of 2018 following a two-year stint with the IMG Academy in Florida.
