Middle Distance Scotland

I was around eight years old when I first realised that I had a talent for running and it was something that I really enjoyed. As I got older and began to put in more hours and miles to my training, I was rewarded with falling times and medals. 2015 has been my most successful year so far as I have realised the first of my many ambitions, that of being picked to run for Scotland. My aims for 2016 are to be picked to represent Great Britain at under 18 level in the European Championships, targeting sub 1.50 at 800m and 3:50 at 1500m. Although middle distance could be viewed as a very individual sport, I love the team aspect. I now have a broad geographical spread of friends who I have met through the sport and I also find that my proudest moments have come gaining points for my team; my current PB at 800m was set running for Team Edinburgh after I had run my current 400m PB earlier in the competition. I am applying to the US because I believe it will offer me the best chance of advancing in my sport as American colleges offer world-class facilities and coaching, along with challenging competition. I am also attracted by the American education system which encourages students to cover general subjects before specialising. I would like to study for a mechanical engineering degree but I am unsure whether the workload will fit in with my training and competition schedule. This flexible approach will allow me to study at a level that is appropriate whilst allowing me to concentrate on my dream of becoming a professional athlete.
