After honing his craft for many years working in the USA, UK and New Zealand, Chef Larry returned to his native Barbados in 1988 and since then has launched some of the island’s most iconic restaurants – Olives Bar & Bistro, La Terra, Cin Cin & Primo. His attention is now focused on the newly-opened Dockside at 13°/59°, where the restaurant’s theme of “bistronomy” has become the new buzzword taking Barbados by storm.
What’s the experience like at Dockside at 13°/59°?
Port Ferdinand oﬀers a truly gorgeous setting, right on the water with the boats all around. It’s an intimate and incredibly peaceful spot, perfectly suited to our contemporary organic style. My menu oﬀers some classic dishes with a refreshing twist, complimented with more complex preparations like our ballotine of rabbit and the 5 hour braised short rib. Our concept at Dockside is “bistronomy” – 50% gastronomy, 50% bistro, encompassing high quality ingredients combined with the culinary discipline and techniques of high end cooking.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
I actually see it more as a lifestyle than “a job”. I love the creativity involved in the process of developing a balanced menu that can entice the most discerning palate, while still maintaining a point of view. Over the years of cultivating a following, I have a responsibility to my clients to keep things fresh and interesting. I have never taken my customers loyalty for granted and I really enjoy interacting with my diners and hearing their feedback. Staying connected with my guests is so very important to me.

Tribute to Mr Alkins Kirton, F.R.I.C.S, I.R.R.V., from BEAVA It was with sadness and regret that we received the news of Mr. Alkins Kirton’s passing and we wanted to convey our condolences to his family, friends and associates and to recognize his contribution to the Real Estate Industry. Mr. Kirton was a stalwart Member, Past President and served for a number of decades on the Board of the B’dos Estate Agents & Valuers Association from as far back as 1974 when it was in its infancy and for this we owe him a large debt of gratitude. Mr Kirton worked alongside Mr. Andrew Mallalieu, R.I.C.S. and others from 2010 onwards to bring together a new association to represent the valuers. In 2015 it was agreed that the association that the Valuers were seeking to form would fall under the BEAVA umbrella as a separate part of BEAVA. Hence the Valuers became the V in BEAVA. Alkins was instrumental in that process and he was a member of the BEAVA management team at that time. During his tenure it became evident that there was a great need to make courses in Real Estate, Property Management etc. available to newcomers to the industry and here too, he gave of his time both to assist in the structuring of the courses along with the B’dos Community College and in teaching segments of these courses on an ongoing basis. Mr. Kirton defined the Categories of Membership for BEAVA Inc. and he encouraged the Valuers and Real Estate Agents to engage in the opportunity and responsibility of developing BEAVA Inc into a well

organized, professional organization. He was instrumental in the framing of draft legislation which once completed will be presented to Government in order to establish legislated standards of practice and a code of ethics to regulate real estate and valuation practices and practitioners in Barbados. We hope to honour him by seeing this aim achieved in the coming year. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
WHAT DO SHORT TERM, MID-TERM AND LONG TERM MEAN? When it comes to residential property rentals, ShortTerm generally refers to holiday rentals of a few days to a few weeks and such rentals attract a higher/nightly rate, inclusive of utilities. Mid-Term generally refers to rental of 2-5 months and will reflect a rate 20-30% higher than the Long-Term rates and typically be inclusive of utilities – rates will also vary depending on whether or not the term spans High Season (Dec-April) Long-Term = Rentals of 6-months or longer. Rental rates are generally exclusive of utilities.
