NEXT LEVEL
Cunha HQ – the magnificent Phantom House | Credit: Supplied
Dylan Cunha celebrated the fourth anniversary of his first winner in the United Kingdom on Sunday 9 August, a milestone that puts into perspective how far the South African has come while earning his stripes in the world’s most competitive racing hub. Mighty Mind’s victory in a £5 000 handicap on the all-weather at Chelmsford on the same day in 2022 was a modest beginning. Cunha had started with just five cast-offs from other yards, housed in a small barn rented from the Jarvis family in a back section of their Phantom House Stables at Newmarket. From those first handful of runners came Silver Sword, a dual winner in Dubai in 2025, and Expressionist, who joined Cunha as a maiden and went on to win six races. Cunha kept plugging away, with dreams and ambitions far bigger than his 10 | 13 AUGUST 2026
budget, and his progress was soon evident when he took over Phantom House, one of Newmarket’s oldest training establishments, following William Jarvis’s retirement in 2023. In his first four seasons, Cunha has saddled 124 winners on the flat and five over the jumps in the UK and Ireland, and a further three during the Dubai carnivals in 2025 and 2026. He has won races at famous tracks like Ascot, Epsom and York, and has a Group 2 success to his name with the bargain buy Prague (Galileo), who won the 2025 Joel Stakes. Last Saturday, Cunha and jockey Ryan Moore won the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Challenge at Ascot with Asgard’s Captain (Make Believe). The now six-year-old’s victory was his ninth for the stable, while his rating has risen from the 60s to 95 since he joined Cunha as a two-time winner in December 2023. “I’ve entered Asgard’s Captain for a Group 1 race in Budapest, Hungary, on 5

September,” said Cunha, whose competitive spirit and willingness to travel keep him on the lookout for suitable races anywhere in Europe. Cunha said the stable celebrated Asgard’s Captain’s victory with the same exuberant after-party they enjoyed when he won the Grade 1 Summer Cup at Turffontein with Strategic News (Strategic) in 2007.
world-class jockeys. South Africa keeps producing riders who can hold their own anywhere.” The stable sent out 53 winners last season and will be looking to get close to that figure again at the end of the 2026 flat season. “We’re trying to focus more on quality than quantity,” said Cunha, who has filled 50 of the 68 boxes at Phantom House with a number of good handicappers, as well as 25 unraced young horses.
“I was still hung over on Monday,” he joked. “It was a joy to win a race on such a prominent race day, and to have Ryan riding our horse. He’d only had two previous mounts for us – both on Strategic News in Dubai in 2009, winning once and finishing second.” Cunha said he felt a strong sense of South African pride when Luke Ferraris won the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Stayers for trainer Ian Williams aboard Dancing In Paris. “Luke and Lyle Hewitson are
“Having plenty of low-rated runners keeps the numbers ticking over, but we don’t waste owners’ time and money, so we move those on who are not good enough to earn.” He regards training from a famous and beautiful establishment like Phantom House as a joy and a privilege. “Phantom House is an identity, like Somerville Lodge is an identity for William Haggas’ stable. In the UK, that is important because it is associated with heritage, tradition and good 13 AUGUST 2026 | 11

horsemanship. Those are factors for owners when placing their runners.” Cunha hopes that continued success will attract more high-profile owners, including South Africa’s major players. “We’ve had valued support from individuals like Kirsten Rausing, Lady Tavistock and Emma Banks, but to go to the next level we need the buying power of more big players. We’d like to get into a bracket where we can compete for the major prizes.” The stable is sponsored by crane company Advanced Access Platforms and G4 Contracts, and enjoys staunch support from syndicates including Quest Thoroughbreds (owners of Asgard’s Captain), the Hold My Beer Syndicate, the Racing To Profit Syndicate Gee Gee’s Racing Syndicate, whose members have been particularly supportive. “We entertain a lot, and our patrons are actively involved.”

One morning I was sitting there when Charlie Appleby walked in, saw me from the corner of his eye and then loudly ordered a ‘Double Cunha’!” Following the recent decision permitting the direct import of live horses from South Africa to Great Britain, Cunha believes trainers such as William Haggas could eventually have runners suitable for raids on South Africa’s major feature races. He would also love to send runners in the opposite direction for races such as the Hollywoodbets Durban July and WSB Cape Met.
Cunha has also been accepted as a colleague within Newmarket’s tightly knit racing community.
“I attended this year’s Durban July and it was great to be back in Durban for a few days. I also had a chance to have breakfast with Jeff and Zac Lloyd, and the irrepressible Paul Lafferty. I can’t recall when last I laughed so much.”
“I get on well with everyone here and it’s a really good place to be, because they value sportsmanship. There are a number of true gentlemen trainers, who have been accommodating and helpful.” Cunha has become something of a

Self and Wish List will race with the best, but South Africa’s super-wealthy owners have no need to negotiate financial windfalls and prefer to be close to their runners. “Other owners of top runners price themselves out of the market in the R5-million to R10-million range, which rules out most potential deals. For between £80,000 and £150,000, you can buy proven Group performers in Europe.” This is the time of year when European buyers prepare for the major sales on the continent, and Cunha said that he and his father Luiz, the pedigree expert, get down to business, spending long days working through catalogues and stables. “We have the Deauville Yearling Sale coming up next week, followed by the Goffs Sale and the Tattersalls Sale at Newmarket. They’re all chock-a-block with superbly bred horses and we always prepare a wish list of what we’d like to buy. But for us there are always two aspects – horses we really want and horses we can afford – and they are often poles apart. “To get something worthwhile in affordable ranges, you have to be always present at the auction rings
and wait for the bargains to fall through the net. And, of course, even in the cheaper sales brackets there is fierce competition from French, Asian and American buyers. So it’s never easy, but we’ve done well. We normally come away with horses we can work with.” At 46, Cunha’s career trajectory suggests a bright future, but like many trainers in the UK and abroad, he is concerned about the state of British racing. He noted: “I caught an interview with Justin Snaith recently in which he warned that British racing will be at risk of going bankrupt if it does not bring about structural change, and he was absolutely right. “We have a great product, respected worldwide, but we need strong leadership and financial support like you’ve had in South Africa, and big race sponsors to come into the sport. “I’ve seen eight or nine established trainers call it a day in my four years at Newmarket and many others have checked out. There were 560 registered trainers in the UK and Ireland in 2022; there are just over 460 now.” www.vermaakequine.com

THE SOUNDS OF

Danon Scorpion in action on the turf – stands his first season in SA | Credit: JRA
Despite winning the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, the son of Halo failed to generate enough interest from American breeders as a stallion prospect and as a result, he was sold to the land of the Rising Sun, where he stood his entire stud career. America’s loss would prove to be Japan’s gain, for he became a breed-shaping legend, leading the Japanese sires list an unprecedented 13 times whilst propelling that industry to new heights. An emperor amongst stallions, his sons and grandsons have followed in his footsteps, a case in point being the exceptional Deep Impact. Eleven times Japan’s champion stallion, he enhanced his stellar reputation by siring Gr1 winners on a global scale and as recently as 2025, featured as the grandsire of Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Classic hero Forever Young. In time, the sire line also found its way to the southern-most tip of Africa. 26 | 13 AUGUST 2026
First to arrive in 2009 was Admire Main, a Gr2 winning son of Sunday Silence. A multiple stakes winner and runner-up in the Japanese Derby, the chestnut stood at Summerhill Stud but managed to sire just one stakes winner, the dual Listed winner The Elmo Effect, as well as the Gr1-placed Admiral’s Eye (3rd Thekwini Stakes) and Unagi (3rd H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes). He also became broodmare sire of Gr1 winner MK’s Pride. Admire Main was followed by Danon Platina, a son of Deep Impact out of a mare by Unbridled Song, from whom he inherited his grey coat. He proved himself a tip top miler and recorded all five career wins over the trip, prime amongst which his careerdefining victory at two in the Gr1 Asahi Hay Futurity on turf. Named the Champion juvenile of his year, Danon Platina went on to lift Tokyo’s Gr3 Fuji Stakes at three at the expense of Gr1 winner Satono Aladdin and Japanese 2000 Guineas hero Logotype and proved he was as good as ever at age six when

landing the Listed New Year Stakes. In 2019, Danon Platina arrived at Mauritzfontein. Despite having access to the revered stud’s excellent broodmare band, his first four crops to race have yielded just five stakes winners, headed by Gr2 Ipi Tombe Challenge victress and Gr1 Empress Club Stakes second White Pearl, Gr3 Cape Classic winner and Gr1 Cape Guineas third Great Plains, as well as Gr3 Langerman ace Absolutely Yes.
Talktothestars (Lot 74). This breeding season, South African breeders will have access to the latest Japanese import, Gr1 winner Danon Scorpion, who has just arrived at Wilgerbosdrift and was acquired in partnership with Mauritzfontein and Ridgemont. A stakes winner and Gr1-placed at two, he scored his signature victory at three in the Gr1 NHK Mile Cup, an achievement which earned him a rating of 118 on the Longines World’s Best Ratings.
He has yet to sire an elusive first Gr1 winner, but came close at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Gold Cup day when juvenile son Kazenoyoni was beaten a neck by Erik Dubois in the Gr1 Premiers Champion Stakes.
In contrast to Admire Main and Danon Platina, Danon Scorpion comes from the Kingmambo sire line, through his son King Kamehameha, who was forced into retirement due to a bowed tendon after being crowned Champion 3yo colt.
Danon Platina will be represented by a sizeable draft at the upcoming August 2YO Sale, which includes a half-sister to abovementioned MK’s Pride (Lot 50); a colt out of a half-sister to champion Celtic Sea (Lot 55) and a colt out of Lady Starlett, a Gr3-placed own sister to Champion sprinter
Japan’s leading freshman sire of 2008, he became Champion sire in 2010 and again in 2011. His most celebrated progeny is Danon Scorpion’s sire Lord Kanaloa, whose exploits as a six-time Gr1 winner earned him the title of Horse of the Year and Best Sprinter Miler on two occasions. 13 AUGUST 2026 | 27
v
From a pedigree perspective, the decision to dip into the Japanese well suddenly makes a whole lot of sense… Lord Kanaloa emulated King Kamehameha by becoming Champion first season sire in 2017 and has also made a marked impression at stud, with the added bonus that he clicked with mares from the Sunday Silence sire line. Of his 12 Gr1 winners, no less than five carry Sunday Silence through the dam, the most notable being his champion daughter Almond Eye, Japan’s Horse of the Year in 2018 and winner of the Gr1 Dubai Turf.
Deep Impact also shares the same female line as former Wilgerbosdrift stallion Right Approach, while Kingmambo is the sire of Mauritzfontein stalwart Ideal World. Danon Scorpion’s female line is decidedly Canadian. His dam Lexie Lou was that country’s Horse of the Year, Champion 3yo Filly and Champion Grass Mare. Significantly, she is by Sligo Bay, a Gr1 winning son of Sadler’s Wells, sire also of Fort Wood, who ruled the roost at Mauritzfontein for many years.
Why invest in yet another Japanese horse?
In addition, Sligo Bay’s female line is that of Rakeen (sire of Jet Master) and Singspiel (sire of Potala Palace), whilst a duplication of Hail To Reason brings into the equation Roberto, sire of Al Mufti and grandsire of Captain Al, whose connection is widespread through his sons and daughters.
Well, it is no coincidence that Danon Scorpion’s bloodlines neatly dovetail into those of the broodmare bands at Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontein.
From a pedigree perspective, the decision to dip into the Japanese well suddenly makes a whole lot of sense.
Lord Kanaloa’s affinity with Sunday Silence will guarantee him mares by Danon Platina, whose sire
Danon Scorpion will stand his first season for a fee of R30 000 live foal.

AN ERA ENDS –
ANOTHER BEGINS
Monday marked a significant moment in Klawervlei’s rich history, as John Koster dispersed his stable and the treasured Captain Al bloodline that has played such an important role in the farm’s legacy.
But while one chapter closes, another begins. With Laurence Wernars now at the helm of Klawervlei, and John remaining closely involved as a consultant, the knowledge, passion and heritage built over generations will continue to guide the farm into its next chapter. The blue-blooded Cullinan Blue (Lot 99) proved the star attraction at an emotional Klawervlei Dispersal Sale. From the immediate family of recent Gr1 winners Sun Goddess and Thesecretadversary, Cullinan Blue was knocked down to Lammerskraal Stud for R3,1 million to top Monday’s auction. A three-time winning daughter of Vercingetorix, Cullinan Blue ran third in the Listed Swallow Stakes and fourth in the Gr2 SA Fillies Nursery. The mare, who sold in foal to One World, is a full-sister to Gr3 Byerley Turk runner-up I’m A Fireball and half-sister to the stakes placed pair 42 | 13 AUGUST 2026
of Battleoftrafalgar and Pillar Of Hercules. Cullinan Blue is out of the top-class racemare Gibraltar Blue, with the daughter of Rock Of Gibraltar having won four Gr2 races, including the KRA Gr2 Fillies Guineas. Both One World and Vercingetorix are Klawervlei-bred Equus Champions. The 178 lots to go through the ring on Monday included stallion shares, broodmares and yearlings, and the gross total of the dispersal sale was R83 878 000. The average price was R471 225 and the median R260 000. It was a day of reflection and gratitude for all that has been and excitement for all that lies ahead. Here’s to the next chapter of Klawervlei! A full list of prices for the Klawervlei Dispersal Sale can be viewed online at https://klawervlei. co.za/sale/klawervlei-dispersal-sale-2026/.

What A Winter is the sire of a three-parts brother (Lot 245) to Pongracz Gr1 Cape Flying Championship winner Bohica (whose sire was sired by Western Winter), and Gr1 Golden Horse Sprint runner-up Bartholdi.

The Hollywoodbets Greyville 7 August evening fixture marked the return of the very popular Friday night racing and celebrated the visit of a Korean racing delegation, with a suitably themed street market and other attractions on course. Serino Moodley showed he means business this season and booted home an early double on Captive Prince for Tony Rivalland, and then the fancied Tunguska for the Ricky Maingard team, before capping his evening with a polished tactical ride on the Andre Nel-trained Miss Twinkle, who registered an overdue maiden stakes success when scoring in the feature. A mare whose SA Champions Season plans had been disrupted by injury, the lightly exposed Miss Twinkle stalked the leaders Gorgeous Girls, Forward Motion and Drumnadochit early on. At around the 1000m marker, Rachel Venniker made a forward move round the field on Happy Fortune, who was slow away after playing up at the start, was and not enjoying the gallop. Happy Fortune led for some way in the run for home, but despite over-racing, Miss Twinkle (9-2) made her move down the inside and was
too strong, drawing away to beat the late finishing That’s My Baby (5-1) by just under half a length in a time of 98,33 secs for the turf mile. Drumnadochit (7-2) was given a good ride by Sean Veale but may just have needed it after her 17-week break and was beaten a further 0,80 lengths back in third, with the Snaith tote favourite Swiatek (2-1) well beaten a further 2,30 lengths back in fourth. The winner was bred by La Plaisance Stud and is by Danehill stallion Oratorio, who stood at Avontuur, out of the Captain Al five-time winner, Twinkle Toes. A winner of 4 of her 11 starts with 5 places, Miss Twinkle has earned stakes of R346 039. During the initial loading process Warrior Royale refused to load and was subsequently withdrawn by the Starter. The daughter of Vercingetorix was suspended until she proves tractable loading and jumping on terms with a companion on two consecutive racemeetings. Happy Fortune received a seven-day suspension for showing similar behaviour. Friday, 14 August is Ladies Night at Hollywoodbets Greyville, read all about it on page 5.

SLASH ’N BURN
HIGHLIGHTS POTENT PEDIGREE
By one of the world’s premier sources of speed and precocity, he is out of a high-class daughter of a hugely influential dual Derby winner. Slash ‘N Burn is a son of Tally-Ho Stud’s top-class sire Mehmas, the sire of more than 50 stakes winners and a further 48 black type performers. Bred on the same Acclamation/Machiavellian cross as champion sire Dark Angel, Mehmas only raced at two, where he won four of eight starts including both the Gr2 Richmond Stakes beating star sprinter and top sire Blue Point into second, and Gr2 July Stakes. He also finished runner-up in the Gr1 National Stakes, when beaten by subsequent dual Guineas winner Churchill. Mehmas has proved a considerably better sire than he was a racehorse, with his tally of 122 | 13 AUGUST 2026
Gr1 winners currently standing at nine. This group includes Gr1 Haydock Sprint Cup winner Minzaal, who is second by earnings, at the time of writing, on the Leading 1st Season Sires premiership in Britain. Ironically, the leader of that 1st Season Sires list is Mehmas’s Gr2 July Stakes winning son Persian Force. Remarkably, Mehmas is responsible for three of the top six stallions on Britain’s Leading 1st Season Sires premiership in 2026. Mehmas shares his influential sire with the likes of world champion Romantic Warrior and the Paardeberg Stud based Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Expert Eye.

Chevauchee wins the Olympic Duel Stakes | Credit: Supplied
The well-bred Slash ‘N Burn (IRE) has a pedigree containing the best of both worlds. The Ridgemont-bred galloper registered his second career victory at Fairview on Monday. Campaigned by Hollywood Racing, Slash ‘N Burn, a half-brother to two winners led by 2024 Listed Christmas Handicap winner Imilenzeyokududuma (Dynasty), is out of the very smart racemare Chevauchee. A daughter of dual Derby winner and influential sire High Chaparral, Chevauchee won first time out before going on to finish second in each of her next three starts. However, Chevauchee bounced back to win the Listed Olympic Duel Stakes and Listed Ladies Mile in her next two starts -a feat which ensured that she would be a much sought after broodmare prospect. Chevauchee was certainly bred to be good. By one of Sadler’s Wells’ very best sons, she hails from an outstanding female line. She was produced by the unraced Danehill mare Chevaleresse, a half-sister to Gr2 Jockey Club Stakes winner Riyadian. Chevaleresse - who is bred on the same Danehill/ Rainbow Quest cross as the remarkable mare
Kind - is out of 1990 Gr1 Irish Oaks winner Knights Baroness. The latter, who also finished third, to the mighty Salsabil, in the Gr1 Epsom Oaks, is out of the remarkably tough racemare Knights Beauty (True Knight). The latter, who made more than 70 starts, won 12 races including a trio of stakes races in the US. Chevauchee is directly descended in female line from the remarkable Court Dress (Disguise). Champion at both two and three in the US, Court Dress founded a remarkable legacy with her numerous top-class descendants including twice US champion sire Exclusive Native and such notable G1 winners as General Assembly, Poet’s Voice and Versailles Treaty. High-class South Africa raced and based broodmare Kelly’s Olympics (Kingmambo) is another descended in female line from Court Dress)

Flashback - Dave The King (Callan Murray) returns with the gold Credit: Chase Liebenberg
THE RETIRES FROM RACING 126 | 13 AUGUST 2026
v
Former Equus Horse Of The Year, Dave The King, has been retired from racing. The popular six-year-old by Global View out of Touche (Jet Master), will be living a quality life at the Lourensford Wine Estate on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains near Somerset West, Western Cape. Dave The King started his career as a two-year-old in June 2022, winning twice for Vaughan Marshall over 1200m before finishing third to Charles Dickens in the Gr3 Cape Classic over 1400m. He was transferred to Mike de Kock in February 2023 and won once over 1200m as a three-year-old, while giving a hint of what was to come with a close third to Princess Calla and See It Again in the 2023 HKJC Champions Cup over 1800m. Dave The King truly came into his own at four with his big galloping action and exceptional cruising speed. He reeled off three successive wins during the 2023/4 Champions Season, including the Gr1 Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge (defeating Cousin Casey and See It Again) and the Gr1 HKJC Champions Cup over 1800m, where Cousin Casey, Purple Pitcher and See It Again were again his wake. On the strength of his 2024 streak of major wins, Dave The King was awarded Equus Horse Of The Year for the 2023/4 season. He returned to KwaZulu-Natal to successfully defend his Gr1 Champions Cup title for Mike and Mathew de Kock in 2025 with another superb, frontrunning display and had two big names behind him – Oriental Charm and Gladatorian. Dave The King’s last win came in the 2025 Gr2 Green Point Stakes, where he employed his massive stride again for a tremendously game win over a power-packed field including See It Again, Jet Force, Questioning, The Real Prince, Gladatorian and Snow Pilot.
Dave The King – settling into his retirement Credit: Supplied
Dave the King raced below his best in 2026 and the decision was made to retire him following his run in the 2026 Champions Cup. “It was a privilege and a pleasure to train Dave The King, a horse with a massive heart and a beautiful temperament. His niggles caught up with him this year, but he has left us with wonderful memories. His big presence in the yard will be missed.” Dave The King competed for the partnership of Larry Nestadt, Ralphs Racing and his breeder, Gary Player. He raced 33 times for 9 wins and 10 places, and amassed R6,2 million in stake earnings. Kathryn Ralphs reported that he has arrived at Lourensford Estate, he is a happy horse, and she said: “Dave’s already got a lot of hugs and kisses since his arrival. We can’t wait for him to be settled. He’ll be regularly ridden through the wine farms and have a happy life!” www.dekockracing.com 13 AUGUST 2026 | 127

Aidan O’Brien worships Sun Goddess, but is she better than Victorious? 13 AUGUST 2026 | 131
v
That very question was put to the master trainer after Sun Goddess became the first Ballydoylebased filly to win the Gr1 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday, justifying 5-4 favouritism without too much fuss. “Oh, now you’re putting me on the spot,” replied O’Brien when asked who was the more talented of his two top-notch two-year-old fillies. “Victorious is very special,” O’Brien continued. “The two of these fillies arrived at the same time and we had to split them up at Ascot. We thought Victorious was a bit quicker than Sun Goddess so that’s why she went for the Queen Mary and this filly went to the Albany. “Victorious dropped down to five for the Queen Mary, even though we thought she would stay seven furlongs. “We always thought six [furlongs] was a lovely trip for this filly, but we weren’t sure whether she would get seven or not. What we learned today was she would have no problem at all with staying seven. “She’s got serious class. It’s the way she went through the race and when Ryan [Moore] asked her to start coming, she was literally there in two strides. He felt he was there too early, but when he asked her she went again so she’s obviously good.” Returning to the original question, O’Brien revealed Victorious is unlikely to be seen out again this season after suffering a setback. The Queen Mary winner was eased out to as big as 9-1 for next year’s 1,000 Guineas, having started the day 13-2 with most firms. “Victorious might not run again this year,” the trainer said. “She was a little bit off-behind [after the Queen Mary] and with fillies like that you have to be very careful, so we won’t be taking any risks with her. “Sun Goddess will run again this season, and you’ll be seeing her a bit more.” Summing up the comparison between Sun Goddess and Victorious, he said: “Look, they are two serious 132 | 13 AUGUST 2026
fillies, what can I say? Sun Goddess is by Sioux Nation and could keep progressing. She has done more than Victorious has done this year, but Victorious has serious quality. “Victorious has travelled to Ascot and won so she has enough experience for next year so we won’t be forcing her. She’s serious.” O’Brien had won the Phoenix Stakes 17 times before, but never with a filly so Sun Goddess was making history and she did so in decisive fashion on the far side, always appearing in command from the two-furlong pole to score by a length and a quarter from Folsom Blues. O’Brien commented: “She’s a beautiful filly. She has a lot of gears and a very high cruising pace. Ryan said they went fast and he just said when he started to ask her, she motored clear. He said she’ll have no problem getting seven furlongs. She’s very exciting.” The big disappointment of the race was Celeron. The apple of Michael O’Callaghan’s eye was hammered into 6-4 before the off having been as big as 3-1 earlier in the day but he was beaten a long way from home and finished seventh of the eight runners under Oisin Murphy. The Windsor Castle winner King Of Cloughan was disappointing, too, trailing in last, as Folsom Blues and Velozee were the only ones to muster any sort of a challenge to Sun Goddess. In truth, the race was over once Moore pressed the button on Sun Goddess two furlongs out and it was only a matter of how far rather than whether she would win from that point on. The Moyglare or the Cheveley Park Stakes could be next on her agenda, and she is generally priced between 8-1 and 10-1 for next year’s 1,000 Guineas. Is she better than Victorious? That is the poser for any punter wanting to have an early ante-post wager on the first fillies’ Classic of 2027. www.racingpost.com

Following a break of 20 years, Ryan Moore returned to the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup at Ascot on Saturday with a vengeance as he spearheaded a decisive Great Britain & Ireland success in the premier jockeys’ competition. Moore had been leading rider when guiding the same team to glory on his debut in the 2006 edition, and the three-time UK champion jockey again received the Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle trophy with 47 points. After coming home seventh in the opening Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Dash, Moore finished in the first three on his four subsequent 140 | 13 AUGUST 2026
rides, winning the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Challenge on Asgard’s Captain and the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Classic on Archers Bay. Moore said: “It has been lovely. I’ve enjoyed it. It’s nice to be back here seeing jockeys like Yutaka [Take] and Christophe [Lemaire] – older jockeys who I was looking up to as a kid. Hopefully everyone has enjoyed it.” Team captain Saffie Osborne was also on the scoresheet, taking the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint on Red Spells Danger, with Dylan Browne McMonagle making the frame on four of his mounts as Great Britain & Ireland ended the day on 81 points.
v
Osborne said: “It has been really good fun. As I said before, it’s a brilliant day to get new people involved in the sport and showcase what fun this industry is. It’s brilliant for a younger audience to be able to pick a team and follow them, and to have such world class jockeys here is brilliant. “I have been very lucky to ride in plenty of different places around the world. I feel very lucky every day to share the weighing room with world class jockeys and, at my age, to be learning so much off of them. Today allows me to learn off different jockeys as well.” Competition debutants Team Hong Kong
stormed into an early lead when Jerry Chau and Vincent Ho registered a 1-2 in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Dash before Luke Ferraris scored 35 minutes later in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Stayers. Ultimately, their challenge fell short and they ended the day on 62 points alongside Europe, who enjoyed a strong end to the card as Frida Valle Skar and Christophe Lemaire finished first and second in the closing Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Mile. Ferraris took the Dubai Duty Free Ride Of The Day Award for his win on Dancing In Paris in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Stayers. 13 AUGUST 2026 | 141

He said: “I am pleased with that, although I don’t think I can take too much credit for it as Ian Williams produced the horse in such great order. “The whole experience has been very good. We started off really well and, although we couldn’t keep it up to the end, I am thrilled to have ridden a winner. I think we have done Hong Kong proud. I’ll be back hopefully.” Jerry Chau was in contention for the leading jockey until the final race. He said of his first experience of the Shergar Cup: “The day has gone better than I expected. To win the first race – which I did not expect – was great and showed me everything. A first ride and first winner at Ascot was a great experience for me. 142 | 13 AUGUST 2026
“It is totally different riding here from other tracks I have ridden on. It is funny not to be riding around a circle – you go around a bend, then along a straight, then around another bend. It took me time to learn about it. “It is a very big stand and the people were excited – every jockey would enjoy riding here in front of the public. I really want to come back next year and would definitely love to ride at Royal Ascot.” The Rest of the World team, made up of Yutaka Take, Suraj Narredu and Jamie Melham, finished fourth on 39 points. Narredu said: “It has been a great day to be part of, even though I did not ride a winner.

It is an honour and a privilege to be part of the Shergar Cup. There are 12 jockeys and only six races, so it happens that you can miss out, but I would love to come back again. “It has always been on my mind to ride at Royal Ascot, but to do that I would probably have to come a little earlier and base myself with a trainer.”
