SPOTLIGHT

About a year and a half ago, I moved my family of five into a new home. It needed some work and I saw it as a blank slate to not only create the perfect environment for my growing family, but to have it feel like an expression of who we are, what we love and how we live. And I couldn’t wait to use some of my favorite Marketplace designs I had been storing up over the years. I can absolutely say the touches of Spoonflower around the house are my most treasured design elements and they end up being the very things that my friends and family remark on the most. I hope you will enjoy thinking about ways to introduce a little color and pattern into your life in ways that feel personal and expressive. Perhaps you will get inspired with our feature article “10 Fresh Ways to Breathe New Life into Your Home”; you may just get a glimpse or two of my home and the three little men that keep me on my toes with their boundless creative energy.

PROJECT IDEAS  |  Design Your Own

Tips for Designing ON SPOONFLOWER

From kids' art & photos, to watercolor & sketches, it all belongs at Spoonflower. Image Size When creating your design, you will need a minimum of 150 pixels for every inch of your final print dimension. For example, if you'd like an image to print at 4" by 4", you'll want to prepare your file so that it measures at least 600 by 600 pixels, since 4 x 150 pixels = 600. You can use this formula to size any image— just multiply the print width and height in inches by 150 pixels.

Every design you see on Spoonflower is made by someone like you. From professional designers to hobbyists and beginners, the Spoonflower Marketplace is for everyone—and you always keep the rights to your work.

DESIGN YOUR OWN fabric & wallpaper & gift wrap

DPI

4

When you upload a design, it's converted to 150 dpi (dots per inch), which can cause some unexpected changes in scale if your image is not already at 150 dpi. You can use the “Smaller” or “Bigger” buttons on the design page or enter a specific dpi by clicking on the “Change DPIˮ link. Once you make an adjustment, don't forget to click “Save this Layout” to make the change stick.

1. Click on ‟Designˮ in the navigation bar and then select ‟Uploadˮ.

Design Preview

2. Select your file. We recommend uploading a JPG or PNG file at 150 dpi (dots per inch). All files should be under 40 MB in size. We also accept TIF and GIF formats.

Keep in mind that the preview window is the best way to predict how your design will print. The rulers along the edge of the preview window are also a great way to estimate the scale of a print. For example, if you notice that your design is cut off in the preview, it will be cut off on your fabric. Additionally, each fabric prints at a specific width, so be sure to check that your design is not wider than the fabric you're ordering.

3. Confirm that you own rights to the design. We respect the rights of artists and so should you. You retain the sole copyright for all original artworks that you upload. 4. Upload. Ta-da! See? We told you it was easy. Now the fun begins…

Repeat Options Once you upload your design to Spoonflower, you can choose to either center it or use our software to create a repeat. A basic repeat just creates tiles of your design straight up and down, while a half-drop or half-brick repeat staggers the tiles vertically or horizontally. The mirror repeat mirrors the design both vertically and horizontally.

From here, you can play with repeat options. Choose to center your design, or create a basic, half-drop, half-brick, or mirror repeat. Add a title, tags, keywords, and description to your design. Completing this important information about your design will ensure that other users and potential customers can find your design in the Spoonflower Marketplace and Google search.

If you're having a hard time picturing what these look like, don't worry—the preview allows you to toggle back and forth between the layout options in real time. Click “Save this Layout” to save your selections.

Sell your design. Proof your work by ordering a swatch of your design on fabric (swatches cost just $5). Ensure that the colors and quality are what you expected. If you need to do some more tweaking, you can go back to your design and make all the necessary changes. If you're pleased, you can make it available for sale.

Materials you’ll need: a sewing machine, a pillow form/insert, fabric (see page 30 for what we recommend), matching thread, scissors, a zipper, an iron and measuring tape. Pinking shears and a seam ripper are optional. 1.

Begin by measuring the width of your pillow and add ⅜" on all four sides for the seam allowance. If the fabric has a design on it, plan how you’d like it to show on the pillow and cut accordingly.

visit spoonflower.com/pillow

A

TIP: Use pinking shears to keep the edges clean and fray-free. 2.

Place the printed sides of the pillow fabric together facing each other and sew a basting stitch along the bottom edge of the fabric using a ⅜" guide on your sewing machine. This will hold the fabric in place until the final stitches are sewn.

3.

Measure and mark where the zipper will begin on both sides of the opening. Set the stitch length to 2.5" and sew a stitch on both sides of the zipper opening. Use a reverse stitch to secure it. You will do this on both sides of the zipper opening.

4.

Open the fabric and place it face down on an ironing board. Iron the seam open to prep for sewing on the zipper. Place the zipper face down onto the seam and pin it into place.

5.

Attach the zipper foot to the sewing machine and start on the left, sewing all edges.

TIP: Back stitch both ends of the zipper as you sew for extra reinforcement. 6.

Once complete, trim threads and carefully remove the basting stitch. Open the zipper 3-6".

7.

Place the printed sides of the pillow fabric together again, pin it into place and sew along the remaining three sides of the pillow. Use your zipper opening to pull the fabric through, right side out.

TIP: Trim the inside corners of the fabric to avoid fabric bunching in the corners.

Sport Lycra $32/yd Unicorns in the Garden by demigoutte, #A495

Our Organic Cotton Knit Ultra is a great choice if you're looking for natural fibers or organic fabric. It's a heavyweight interlock fabric that's a bit like a t-shirt knit, but thicker. For a lighter option, Modern Jersey is a polyester knit with a cottony feel and matte finish that's perfect for projects which need a delicate, airy knit. Our Cotton Spandex Jersey is super stretchy, with great recovery, and is between Modern Jersey and Organic Cotton Knit in weight. All three fabrics are great for kids and infant clothing and blankets that need to be extra soft and snuggly. For a knit with vibrant colors that hold up wonderfully to repeated washings, you’ll want to check out our Performance Piqué, Performance Knit, Sport Lycra or Modern Jersey. The Performance Piqué even has a soil-release finish that makes laundering a breeze.

Modern Jersey $26.50/yd

Chevron Love Mustard Yellow by misstiina, #A493 Chevron Love Grey by misstiina, #A494

For athletic apparel, leggings and other projects that call for a breathable fabric, Performance Piqué, Performance Knit and Sport Lycra all have moisture-wicking properties to keep you cool and dry. Performance Piqué has a subtle diamond-like texture, while Performance Knit has a bit more sheen to it. Sport Lycra stretches to fit your body and is perfect for leotards, yoga tights and other form-fitting pieces including swimwear. If you’re looking for a 4-way stretch, our Cotton Spandex Jersey, Moden Jersey, Organic Cotton Knit Ultra and Sport Lycra provide flexibility in both directions. For a 2-way stretch, try our Performance Pique or Performance Knit.

Meet the Maker

KATE ZAREMBA WAS H IN GTO N , D.C .

Kate Zaremba had an unconventional start growing up as a child actress and singer on sets and sound stages across the country. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and moved to New York City, where she was a design assistant to Jonathan Adler and illustrated textiles for Rachel Antonoff. Now a successful maker settled in Washington, D.C., Zaremba creates whimsical textile and wallpaper designs from a workshop she shares with other female makers.

but I am also a lover of art history. So somewhere in between experimentation with materials and processes in my studio and inspiration from the past is where my work tends to go. I would say my style is pretty playful, often bold, and definitely quirky.

When inspired, we create. Pursuing ideas, we invigorate. Experts of design, innovators of aesthetic, we are workhorses in the studio. We are individuals, we are originals, belonging to a global collective. Resilient, energized and passionate, we are the Creative Class. More and more creative individuals are seeking full or part-time self-employment as a way of freeing themselves from traditional corporate structures and are following their passions with the meaningful work of “making.” With a rise in demand and online marketplaces for handmade goods, along with the DIY ethos coming into the mainstream, Spoonflower supports creative entrepreneurs, and really always has. In 2008, Spoonflower was founded to disrupt the traditional textile industry built on long fabric runs and to make accessible the idea of designing your own fabric and ordering in small quantities. Today, Spoonflower has a very close relationship to the maker economy. Small business owners use Spoonflower fabrics as an important part of their supply chain in making their handmade goods. With the addition of the Marketplace, independent surface designers can participate in a burgeoning

ecosystem where they retain the rights to their art but are paid commissions on every sale that includes their design.

“If you have a good work ethic, you will likely stick to something long enough to watch it grow. I enjoy the process of making as much as the outcomes. I think that’s essential if you choose to be an artist or designer full time.” — KATE ZAREMBA Last year alone, Spoonflower paid over $1 million to designers in our community. We’re proud to provide a platform teeming with creative entrepreneurs who are flourishing in this modern maker revolution.

each design; a lovely palette that works in different combinations and a mash up of designs varying in complexity, energy and color that work together but also stand on their own.

It was Spoonflower that welcomed me back to art, with its safe, non-judgmental, low-risk, lowcost platform for dabbling in design. I fell in love with design all over again, but this time as an adult. I’ve been having a full-blown, passionate and, at times, addictive love affair with it ever since.

With her bold and bright luxury home décor line, you can feel Maggie's connection to her lakeside upper peninsula roots. She splits time between Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Leland, Michigan, where her seasonal shop draws customers in with colorful, unique prints inspired by waterside living. Buoyed by her background in art education, she taught herself graphic design and turned her eye for color into textile printmaking with Spoonflower.

It was an exciting winter for Erin Robertson, a 29-year-old fashion designer from Cambridge, Massachusetts. She was named winner of Season 15 for her collection featuring Spoonflower’s Poly Crepe de Chine.

What is your favorite Spoonflower textile to work with? I’d say Eco Canvas because of its vibrancy and durability.

What has been inspiring to you recently? Lately I’ve been inspired by designs of ferns, and I have
