Sarah Ioannides Music Director

Sarah Ioannides’ dynamic presence has won praise from audiences and critics alike internationally with engagements spanning five continents.

Music Director of the Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra, she is quickly gaining recognition as one of the most active, engaging and innovative conductors of her generation.

Recently listed as one of the top twenty female conductors worldwide by Lebrecht’s “Woman Conductors: The Power List” in 2016, she has also been named in the Los Angeles Times as “one of six female conductors breaking the glass podium” and noted in the New York Times as part of “a new wave of female conductors in their late 20’s through early 40’s.” Ioannides was awarded the JoAnn Falletta award for the most promising female conductor.

Britain in the UK and horn player in the Surrey County Youth Orchestra from the age of 11. With Masters degrees from Oxford University (Instrumental Scholar) and the Juilliard School of Music (Bruno Walter Award), Ioannides studied conducting, violin, piano, singing and French Horn. A recipient of numerous prizes and awards, following studies at the Guildhall School of Music, she came to the United States as a Fulbright Scholar attending the Curtis Institute of Music.

A zealous supporter of living composers, Ioannides has conducted over 40 World, North American and European premiers. Under her leadership, the SPO and Tacoma Symphony have received ArtWorks grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, both for creativity in collaborations, commissioning and community involved projects.

Ioannides will be stepping down from her position as Music Director of the

SPO at the end of the 2016-2017 season.

Her tenure is characterized by bringing excellence, innovation, collaboration, and diversity by introducing renowned soloists and creating new educational initiatives, community partnerships, and affirming the SPO as one of the most vibrant performing ensembles in its region.

"The orchestra and its Music Director, Sarah Ioannides, offered compelling proof of the value and importance of an orchestra,” stated the Spartanburg Herald Journal.

What is your music legacy?

We all have a story about who inspires our love of music or what particular compositions move us and transcend our humanity. Here, in our beloved Spartanburg, we are beyond fortunate to benefit from a symphony organization composed of talented and professional musicians, devoted patrons and a dedicated Philharmonic staff.

For more than a decade, the Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra has been inspired by the work and artistry of Maestra Sarah Ioannides. As we enter a new season, her last as music director and conductor, we will celebrate all that she has brought to our community and to the gifts she leaves behind in the form of memorable performances and an impressive music education outreach to the community.

The season, “One Legacy” is an opportunity for long time music devotees to experience programs of artistry and classics. It is also an opportunity to introduce the wonder of orchestral performance to the next generation of music lovers in Spartanburg. We encourage you to create your own music legacy by sharing the experience of a live performance by inviting a friend to join you for one of our performances.

The Board of Directors and I are so grateful for our faithful donors, patrons and advertisers whose commitment to building a legacy of classical music to the community allows us to plan for the quality of music so often found only in larger cities. We count on all of you to help in continuing this important cultural gift to Spartanburg.

Tomeka Pierce Tomeka sits on the Piedmont Care Board of Directors, the United Way of the Piedmont Young Leaders Advisory Board (winner of the Walter S. Montgomery Sr Award for Young Leadership 2012) and the 1831 Gala Committee. Ms Pierce is a member of the Junior League of Spartanburg (winner of the Mary Flower Scott Award for Community Service 2015), Spartanburg Young Professionals, The Swiss Club, Leadership Giving Society and Women's Leadership Council of United Way of the Piedmont.

Dr. Jerrie Lucktenberg - former Concertmaster of the Greater Spartanburg Philharmonic, artist, pedagogue, and author - retired from her position during The Music Foundation’s 2002-2003 season. To help ensure the presentation of Spartanburg’s professional orchestra in our community, Dr. Lucktenberg made a generous gift of $50,000 towards the endowment of the Concertmaster Chair.

With your help, The Music Foundation has matched this gift, fully endowing the chair as the Jerrie Lucktenberg Concertmaster Chair. We hope you will be inspired to follow Dr. Lucktenberg’s generous lead.

The Henry Janiec Society was established in 2001 to honor the distinguished Dr. Henry Janiec - conductor, educator, and pianist.

Dr. Janiec conducted the Spartanburg Symphony Orchestra from 1952 to 1995 and served as Dean of the Converse College School of Music from 1967 to 1994. He also served as Director of the Brevard Music Center from 1964 to 1996.

Members of the Henry Janiec Society have established permanently endowed chairs in the Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra with a gift of $25,000 or more. These chairs and funds help guarantee the future of the Philharmonic.

We have created the Joe Roy Utley Legacy Society to provide a fund through which friends can make bequests in a number of different ways. The easiest method is an instruction in a Will to leave a specific dollar amount to The Music Foundation of Spartanburg. It is a simple matter to add a codicil to an existing Will, giving the direction to make a gift from your estate to the Society. Gifts may also be made by giving appreciated securities or other assets, by way of charitable trust, through gift of life insurance, or by gifts of retirement account assets.

aron Copland, considered one ...of America’s greatest composers, came to this status from an unlikely background. Born in New York City to Russian-immigrant parents, Copland went to Paris in the early 1920’s to study composition with the eminent teacher, Nadia Boulanger. He returned to this country determined to capture the spirit of America in his music. His success was legendary, not only as a composer but as a lecturer, a pianist and an organizer of musical societies in this country.

Copland’s music captures the essence of the American spirit. During the 1930’s when the great depression gripped our nation Copland wrote music for the ordinary American. Understanding the feeling of the westward frontier, with its vast open spaces and man’s hopes and joys in this country, his music emphasized simplicity.

elen Frankenthaler’s work has .made a significant impact on my creative life. I was first introduced to it in the fall of 1983 through the television documentary “Helen Frankenthaler — Toward a New Climate.” I was an impressionable graduate student at Juilliard at the time and was bowled over by the beauty of Helen’s painting and her free-wheeling creative attitude.

This encounter helped me eventually to find my own creative path and surmount the doctrinaire rhetoric of avant-garde musical composition that prevailed in the 1980s. The aesthetic move toward the “new Romanticism” in musical composition was in its nascent stages, and it would be another decade before it

fanfares for the 1942-43 concert season.

As Goossens described, “It is my idea to make these fanfares stirring and significant contributions to the war effort.” Of those 18 works Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man is the one that achieved lasting fame.

Thinking not only of the fighting troops Copland felt that the common man should also be honored, for, as the composer described, “…it was he who was doing the dirty work [at home] in the war.” Striving for a patriotic sentiment Copland sought, “a certain nobility of tone, which suggested slow rather than fast music.”

The brass ensemble consists of horns, trumpets, trombones, and tuba, plus percussion. Beginning with a call to arms from the percussion, the heroic trumpet theme is soon passed between trombones and tuba and then horns and trumpets.

With each repetition it increases in grandeur and closes with a crescendo in the percussion and grand chords in the brass. ~ Joella Utley

I wrote Helen a letter shortly after I saw the documentary, telling her why I liked her work, and she wrote back immediately. She lived on East 94th Street, and I on West 71st Street. I was amazed that someone so famous would actually take an interest in what I had to say. I took her work very seriously, and I think she sensed that I wasn’t a celebrity hound or a toady — I understood what she was trying to do and it resonated with me. Helen invited me to a forthcoming show that December at the Emmerich Gallery, and we met there. As you might imagine, I was awestruck and

thrilled to meet an artist whose work I admired so deeply. The first painting I saw as I walked into the gallery was Out of the Dark. I looked at the patch of raw canvas on the upper right corner with all the paint rushing toward that spot and instantly my creative instincts harmonized with the image. It was as if my own creative aesthetic was shown to me. I will never forget that moment.

Helen and I became friends and we maintained a correspondence over the years until her death in December 2011.

Her artwork adorns the covers of my five Naxos recordings.

I have been captivated for some time by the idea of using three gorgeous Frankenthaler canvases as the basis for a musical journey in a three-movement piano concerto. The titles of the

The first sketches I made for this concerto date back to the early 1990s. I am grateful to my longtime friend and Juilliard classmate Jeffrey Biegel for encouraging me to compose the work. He is a champion of American composers, and he has commissioned, premiered, and recorded an enormous body of concerti and chamber music composed especially for him. (continued on page 23)

hen young Johannes Brahms first heard Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, he left the performance saying, "I must write music like that."

And some would say he did. Hans von Bulow described Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 as "Beethoven's Tenth." Brahms took his own personal challenge – to write symphonies like Beethoven – very seriously and spent almost twenty years creating his first. Later he said, "You will never know how the likes of us feel when we hear the tramp of a giant like him (Beethoven) behind us."

was guarded in its praise. However, the German critic, Eduard Hanslick, wrote, "Seldom, if ever, has the entire musical world awaited a composer's first symphony with such tense anticipation...

The new symphony of Brahms is a possession of which the nation may be proud, an inexhaustible fountain of sincere pleasure and fruitful study."

Biographer Karl Geiringer wrote that the orchestra of the premiere thanked Brahms, "for having proved that the last word in the art of symphony writing was not yet spoken."

Brahms began his first symphony in his early twenties and played the first movement for Clara Schumann in 1862.

She encouraged him to complete the work and he gradually added the second and third movements. He sent Clara the horn theme of the finale in 1868, which he described as an alphorn melody. This self-critical composer was known to ponder and revise his works over long periods of time.

The first movement begins with a slow, dramatic beat of the kettledrums, which then gives rise to the main theme. The melancholy second movement and the graceful song-like third movement may be Brahms' tribute to Schubert. In the final movement a peaceful melody comes first from a solo horn, like that of a shepherd's horn heard by Brahms in the alpine country where he spent his summers. This melody is then taken up by the flute and finally by the trombones.

Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 was first performed in 1876 when Brahms was forty-three. The audience at the premiere 20

paintings (which are also the titles of the movements), are Spiritualist, Silent Wish, and Natural Answer. Taken together, the paintings and their titles make a logical progression visually, emotionally, and musically. The canvases were painted in the 1970s during Helen’s mature style of staining and scumbling unstretched raw canvas spread on her studio floor, the elaborate washes of color soaking into the raw fibers of the untreated material.

n 2015, Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA, conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters upon Mr. Biegel, for his achievements as the most respected prolific artist of his generation in performance, recordings, chamber music collaborator, champion of new music, composer, arranger and educator.

Pioneer of commissioning projects joining multiple orchestras as a model for commissioning new music in the 21st century, Mr. Biegel created the first largest consortium of orchestras in 1998 for Ellen Taaffe Zwilich's 'Millennium Fantasy' premiered with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in 2000, followed with Tony award winning composer Charles Strouse's 'Concerto America' with the Boston Pops, Lowell Liebermann's 'Concerto no. 3, Opus 95', premiered with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, William Bolcom's 'Prometheus' for piano, orchestra and chorus, with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra and Pacific Chorale, Richard Danielpour's 'Mirrors' with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Kenneth Fuchs's 'Piano Concerto: The Spiritualist' with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra (MA). Jeffrey and I studied at Juilliard during the 1980s, at a time when many iconic faculty performers and composers brought forward to us the great traditions of classical music, which they themselves had inherited from master teachers of the early 20th Century. Jeffrey’s virtuoso technique and crystalline lyrical touch, which he learned from his principal teacher Adele Marcus, inspired me as I worked on the concerto.

The complete concerto lasts about 21 minutes and is composed in my mature musical style, incorporating hallmarks of the American symphonic school, rigorous counterpoint, and aspects of minimalism.

I. Spiritualist The first movement, cast in modified sonata-allegro form, is optimistic and playful in spirit. The woodwinds introduce a jocular rhythmic motive emphasizing the intervals of the third and sixth. The piano comments upon and melodically extends the woodwind motive. The exposition continues as the woodwinds, horn, and piano restate the opening motive in upward-rising melodic inversion. This leads to two principal themes introduced by the piano. The first is rhythmic and robust, developing the intervallic material introduced by the woodwinds; the second is lyrical, featuring scalar legato passages.

Throughout, the orchestra interjects short, rhythmic canonic musings on the piano themes. The development section features the piano and orchestra tossing back and forth virtuosic riffs on all of the intervallic and melodic material introduced in the exposition. The coda introduces a development of the lyrical theme stated by the piano in the

exposition. It is first played by the strings and horn, embellished by rhythmic piano figurations. The piano then takes up the theme and plays it in canon with the orchestra. This episode is a brief exposition of new musical material that will appear in an extended presentation during the third movement finale of the concerto. As the first movement glides to its serene but inconclusive close, the piano and orchestra scatter fragments of music from the exposition and development.

II. Silent Wish The second movement, cast in modified rondo form, is introspective and reflective in spirit. The strings softly reiterate a dissonantly voiced dominant seventh chord in the far-off key of C-sharp major, creating a hazy atmosphere, while the piano hesitantly intones fragments of the first principal (robust) theme of the first movement. The tonality slowly changes to C major, but with no sense of functional harmonic movement, and the piano introduces an ambient Gymnopédie theme based on the second principal (lyrical) theme of the first movement. The stasis of the Gymnopédie music is suddenly interrupted by a dissonant orchestral outburst, utilizing all twelve tones, based on fragments of the first-movement exposition. Buzzing and scurrying orchestral textures attempt to envelope the piano in sound. A chase ensues and the piano takes flight. The piano eventually pacifies the jagged, nontonal outburst with a single fragment of the Gymnopédie theme. This leads to a lush collective orchestral recollection of the ambient atmosphere, led by the piano, in a seven-part stretto of the Gymnopédie theme, cycling through the circle of fifths. The reverie is shattered

with a second, more intense, orchestral outburst. The piano attempts to surmount the increasingly violent nature of the orchestral music by insistently playing clangorous major triads throughout the entire range of the piano, based on a melodic sequence of pitches from the first movement exposition. Once again, the piano pacifies the orchestral furor with a single fragment of the Gymnopédie theme. The piano continues the ambient atmosphere momentarily, but collapses into a hazy, brooding orchestral texture.

Slowly, the piano rises from the depths of the instrument to make a Silent Wish and embrace a diatonic musical cryptogram including the pitches F–C–H–S derived from my surname and the German letter names for two pitches: H for B-natural and S for E-flat. The orchestra quietly ruminates on these pitches as the piano intones one last fragment of the Gymnopédie theme and brings the movement to quiet repose.

III. Natural Answer The third movement, cast in modified rondo form, is an energetic affirmation of the spiritual journey of the first two movements. The music is buoyant and optimistic, interpolating jazzy syncopated rhythms, and combines mottos and themes heard throughout the concerto. The piano and orchestra race to a brilliant and jubilant conclusion.

The Piano Concerto was composed from February 2015 through January 2016 in Mansfield Center, Connecticut.

Speaking of Music

A

s a journalist I’ve traveled all over ...the world interviewing celebrities, sports figures, and politicians. During interviews I always ask this question: “what are you listening to?”

your mood and makes it easier to focus. This is your brain on music.

I never get the same answer, but I’ve learned that everyone has a lyric that moves them, or a beat that they find achingly familiar. In a fast-paced visual society where the digital landscape is constantly shifting, the intimate act of being touched or moved by a piece of music is an admission of vulnerability and statement about humanity.

Therein lies the power of our Orchestra. Sitting in a chair surrounded by others who have decided to engage in the journey the orchestra will take us on, we may seem stationary but we are in transit, traversing the world through melody and poetic phrases, translated into sound. Desire is voiced and executed by the soaring peal of a trumpet, while longing tugs at us through the lone hum and cry of an oboe. Accelerating, pulsing of the strings threatens to overwhelm us with their urgency and by the recapitulation we’ve been on a journey—as individuals and as one breathing body. For a moment—and perhaps only one moment, we function as a unit, and we are indivisible.

Scientists are currently tracking our relationships with music over the course of a lifetime in order to better understand music's power to change the brain and affect the way it works; how it is hard-wired to respond, and to feel. We know from numerous studies that music stimulates more parts of the brain than any other human function.

There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of pages of scientific research on music and our cognitive response. This much we know for sure: the brain releases the neurotransmitter dopamine, which gives you a "warm feeling of pleasure.” Another neurotransmitter, serotonin, elevates

What we feel in that concert... has the potential to change the way we treat one another. often evokes strong emotional responses and exposes my vulnerabilities. In the music there is often exaltation, and sometimes joy, but in that same work I can also find isolation, and regret.

Ultimately there is reconciliation.

That’s the powerful thing about live music — perhaps it does not give us what we initially sought, but it has the power to reveal what we need — on an intellectual, spiritual and emotional level.

situations, previous musical ability or initial musical interest we converge on this place seeking an experience that will change us, reaffirm us, or validate our experience.

This fact has the power to change the way we talk about music, the way we engage with one another, and enhance our sense of self. Whether the journey occurs with established musicians that seek to trouble the limits of the traditional tonal system, or emerging composers who demand my brain performs a series of mental gymnastics as their work stretches the boundaries of musical theory, forcing me to reexamine my beliefs about art and the essence of the concert-going experience, I always leave a concert with a new perspective.

One conclusion that I’ve come to several times over is that music can be a powerful vehicle to build bridges, connecting us to each other. What we feel in that concert and ultimately what we understand about ourselves and those around us has the potential to change the way we treat one another—as concertgoers, neighbors and ultimately a community. The orchestra, with their disciplined but expressive nature, presents us with an opportunity— nay, a gift, should we be open enough to receive it. The bigger work that remains to be done, perhaps, is making sure that more in our community have access to this resource, so that they can embark upon their own journey.

Leroy Anderson (1908-1975), described by composer John Williams as "one of the great American masters of light orchestral music,” studied music and composition at the New England Conservatory and Harvard University. His musical career included composing for (and often conducting) studio orchestra, Broadway shows and, of course, the Boston Pops, and produced timeless miniatures such as The Syncopated Clock, Blue Tango, Sleigh Ride, and The Typewriter. Tonight’s 1950 A Christmas Festival is a solidlywritten, enduring work premiered by

lifelong friend of Ralph VaughnWilliams, Gustav Holst (18741934) led a full and varied life as a musician, supporting himself as a professional trombonist, as a teacher, as the music director at Morley College and Saint Paul’s Girls School, and, of course as a composer. Having generated a substantial oeurvre, he is best remembered for his compositions

Variations on Joy to the World takes the familiar tune and the listener on a witty stylistic journey. Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) composed his timeless Fantasia on Greensleeves in 1934 and included the folk song Lovely Joan as its center section. Now destined to become a holiday classic, Alan Silvestri’s (b. 1950) suite from The Polar Express springs from the 2004 Tom Hanks cinema hit.

Night Before Christmas showcases the efforts of many talented hands. Originally entitled “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” the original poem was penned by American teacher and writer Clement Clarke Moore (1779-1863) in 1837. Moore’s poem was set to music in 1942 by composer and arranger Kenneth Lorin

intinnabulation is defined as “the ringing or sounding of bells,” and tintinnabulation is in the fabric our holiday tradition. As noted in the Leroy Anderson website, the middle section of his 1953 Song of the Bells…”contains something rarely heard: a duet between chimes and bells. The flowing musical themes show why Anderson has been called one of our greatest melodists.”

Familiar to the point that is seems without origins, Carol of the Bells was composed in 1914 by Ukrainian Mykola Leontovych

eorges Bizet (1938-1875) composed ..his incidental music for the illfated performances of The Girl from Arles (L’Arlésienne) by Alphonse Daudet (18401897) in 1972. Bizet, and later, friend and colleague Ernest Guiraud (18371892), salvaged enough of the original music to create the two suites, which have become so often programmed by symphony orchestras and so loved by their audiences. Though not specifically referencing the season, movements from these suites serve as perfect holiday offerings. The Carillon from Suite No. 1 harkens to our Tintinnabulations earlier

He received additional training in orchestral conducting from Symphony School of America, the Florida Festival Conductors Symposium, and the Conductors Guild Conducting Institute.

Gary Robinson Guest Conductor

Gary Robinson has served on the music faculty of the Fine Arts Center and has been the Director of FAC’s Orchestra-inResidence, the Young Artist Orchestra (formerly Greenville County Youth Orchestra) since 1985. Robinson served as Music Director of Greenville’s Foothills Philharmonic from 2000-2010. In the 1990s, he was an artistic program advisor and guest conductor with the Greenville Symphony Orchestra. Robinson is the Founder of the Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra of Jackson, Mississippi, and has been featured as a guest conductor with the Hendersonville (NC) Symphony Orchestra, the Clemson University Symphony, the Carolina Youth Symphony, and the South Carolina Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. Robinson has conducted South Carolina’s All-State Orchestra (1993 and 1997) as well as the New Hampshire All-State Orchestra, and was the featured clinician with the Kenosha (WI) United School District

in the program; indeed, the opening horn statements are performed with what musicians refer to as “bell tones.” The final movement, Farandole from Suite No. 2, begins with a grand orchestral statement of French Christmas song March of the Kings before launching into a whirlwind of woodwinds, strings, and finally full orchestra. Separating them is the lovely Menuet, also from Suite No. 2. Borrowed from Bizet’s opera The Fair Maid of Perth, it showcase the SPO’s principal flute and bassoon. Enjoy! ~ Gary Robinson

Orchestra Festival. Robinson served as the Producer/Director of Greenville’s Singing Christmas Tree from 1993 until its close in 2000, and has served as Interim Choral Director at Buncombe Street United Methodist Church.

As a music faculty member at the Fine Arts Center Robinson has taught classes in percussion, winds & brass instruments, and music theory. Robinson was FAC’s Teacher of the Year in 1996 and, in 2005 was the winner of a Surdna Foundation grant to study orchestral repertoire in New York City and drum set at the Drummer’s Collective. He has held adjunct positions as a percussion teacher at Limestone College, the University of Connecticut, and Furman University, and has served as a band director in Mississippi public and private schools. Robinson has performed as a percussionist and timpanist since 1977 and has played with orchestras in Connecticut, Mississippi, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.

He is a veteran of the American Wind Symphony Orchestra of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and currently performs with the Greenville Symphony Orchestra.

Gary’s wife since 1980 is violinist, teacher and conductor Kathleen S. Robinson.

Violinist daughter Chloe is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory. Daughter Caroline is an organ performance major at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, PA. HearHERE

nticipation of the 2016-17 season ...of the Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra is bitter sweet. As we know, it is the last season for our beloved conductor, Sarah Ioannides, who will have led the SPO for the past 11 years.

We have come to enjoy the wonderful and varied programs presented on the concert stage and the fine outside guest artists she has brought to perform with the orchestra. As well, Sarah has worked with children and youth in the schools of Spartanburg County. She has advanced musical programs in our community with such programs as Link Up with Carnegie Hall (see page 42) – and the list goes on.

Now, as we move toward the future, the Music Foundation of Spartanburg is conducting a nation-wide/international search for the next conductor of the SPO. As with the past search, the Music Foundation is working through several leading organizations, which publish our position needs and opportunities.

The Search Committee consists of SPO orchestra members, Music Foundation board members and staff, and community leaders. This group will be reviewing resumes and inviting promising conductors to visit our community. The four leading candidates will perform with our orchestra during the 2017-18 season.

The final candidate chosen will begin performances in the 2018-19 season.

The Music Foundation and the Search Committee welcome the thoughts of you, our audience members. We would like your feedback regarding what you desire in a new conductor, the types of music you most appreciate and any other thoughts you have regarding the performance of classical music in our community. MSI: A Retrospective Todd Stephens

n April 1997, when the Headquarters ...Library moved from the edge of Converse Heights to downtown Spartanburg, we knew the information age was on the cusp of significant change as the Internet shouldered its way into the mainstream. If the acquisition and presentation of information was to undergo a revolution, then the library must remain pliable and change as well.

Libraries are not passive institutions.

Libraries are a vital and intricate part of a community’s educational and cultural

fabric. To remain relevant, Libraries must program spaces in and out of its walls.

Nineteen years ago the Headquarters Library Opening Festivities Planning Committee, chaired by Wendy Mayrose, focused on programming that engaged, educated, and entertained the greater Spartanburg community. The planning committee did not have the benefit of present day technology. They did not have access to analytics and the street level analysis of household behaviors.

What the committee did have was a

keen understanding of the importance of meaningful interpersonal relationships and programming public spaces with ideas and information.

With this mindset as the frame, Hank Barnet, serving as a member of the planning committee, suggested the creation of Music Sandwiched In, a lunchtime program featuring local musicians – a rather simple concept.

Since 1997, thousands of individuals have enjoyed jazz, bluegrass, sneak

peaks of the Spartanburg Little Theatre’s musical productions from Footloose to Hairspray, and of course the always popular Foothills Oompa Band. During Music Sandwiched In the doors of the Barrett Room are left open, and the 105,000 square foot library is filled with music, laughter, and applause.

Hank’s idea has blossomed into a musical program that has continued to enrich the lives of others for 19 years. Music Sandwiched In has been replicated at our branch locations and has led to spin off programs such as Books Sandwiched In and Cinema Sandwiched In.

Music Sandwiched In is free, entertaining, and intergenerational. Our audiences come from White Oak Estates, Boiling Springs High School, Summit Hills and Meeting Street Academy (just to name a few). There are weeks when we have school busses lined up with the buses from our assisted living facilities. As a community, we are strong when an 8 year old is able to sit next to a 98 year old and share in the same experience. We are active when we allow music to flood our senses and to stimulate our thinking.

Yet Sarah will be the first to acknowledge her accomplishments are in fact due to the tremendous dedication of a league of Spartanburg music lovers. Today we feature Jim Hudgens – lawyer, former Chair of the Board of Directors, and avid community volunteer.

Jim chaired the Search Committee responsible for bringing Sarah to Spartanburg. Not only could he see the talent in the young Maestro Ioannides, Jim saw the potential for Spartanburg to rise to the challenges of becoming a regional and state arts force. Harnessing the momentum of Sarah’s first exciting season, Jim championed SPO at every turn inviting fellow business leaders, government and city officials, community groups, and the media to work with him to build a Music Foundation that could support the artistic integrity of the musicians and music director.

ince 2011, every 4th grade student ..attending Spartanburg County Schools has been given the opportunity to join the Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO) in the highly engaging, participatory program Link Up. In an effort to reach as many young people as possible, the SPO offers the Link Up program at no cost to the students.

For many students and their families, Link Up provides their first exposure to live classical music performance, providing an experience that influences these young minds and thus the community, for a lifetime. The SPO’s Link Up program is the ultimate educational opportunity for music teachers, students and their families. For the Orchestra, this provides important collaboration and partnership with schools, students, 42

teachers and community fulfilling a fundamental component of our mission.

Link Up is a music education program created by Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute to unite the classroom with the concert hall, giving students the opportunity to explore music through a yearlong curriculum of classroom activities and a culminating concert in which students perform with a professional orchestra.

Through the 2016–2017 season’s curriculum, The Orchestra Sings, students will explore orchestral repertoire through a hands-on music curriculum.

The yearlong program of skills-based and creative work in the classroom will culminate in a lively interactive concert at Twichell Auditorium at Converse

College, giving students the chance to demonstrate what they have learned by singing and playing recorder or violin with the Spartanburg Philharmonic from their seats in the audience. Guided by conductor Sarah Ioannides the hour long program of music making and “listening challenges” will also incorporate some of the students’ original compositions, as well as lighting and visual effects.

A Teacher's Perspective Dr. Sharon T. Doyle

A

parent of a second grader recently stopped me in the hall and relayed an interesting story to me about her son’s musical education. It went something like this – She and her husband had bought tickets to a rock concert and simply told her two boys they would have a sitter on Friday night because they were attending a concert. Her son in turn inquired, “Orchestra or opera?” When she mentioned it was a rock concert, he replied, “Oh.” Her comment to me was that she was amazed and a little proud (I think) that in second grade, her son’s musical experience had led him to ask about more classical concerts as the concerts his parents of course should be attending.

up to the day of the concert and upon returning back to school, students add Beethoven to their rock star list. On the last day of school, one student shared, that he only wished he could know more about Mozart before the year was over.

While other teachers were packing boxes and taking out trash, our last day was spent doing one more internet search

and listening to one last piece written by their new favorite composer. Music touches our students in very real and lasting ways and gives students a new conversation with parents and adults outside of school. The Link Up program provides the catalyst for continued study and allows students to realize that there is no substitute for the live performance.

This story reminds me of the strong influence that opportunities to hear and experience live music in all forms opens a world of possibilities to our children.

The fact is that students in elementary school are as accepting of traditional classical music, as they are hip-hop and r&b. The distinction that must be made is that we take for granted that they know about all types equally. To many of my fourth grade students, attending the Link Up is their first live orchestra experience and for some their first live concert of any type. The students are mesmerized by the entire experience: the concert hall, the musicians, the screen, the conductor, and even the trip across town to an area some have never ventured. Too often, those of us living in a musical world are unaware that without these opportunities, too many never get this experience. Since being involved in the program, more of my students are continuing in music at the middle school level. We have an increase of students joining band and strings in fifth grade and more are continuing with their studies into the middle school.

My students work on parts of the program throughout the year leaning about the music, composers, instruments, and becoming performers as partners with the orchestra. Excitement leads

S P OT L I GH T Jimmy Gibson Volunteer

I

f you’ve been to one of our concerts – whether in Twichell ...Auditorium, the Chapman Cultural Center, the downtown Public Library, or even outside on Morgan Square – you’ve probably seen volunteer Jimmy Gibson with his camera and with a smile! Jimmy is an amazing asset to the Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra, documenting and sharing virtually every SPO event throughout the year. Though he claims photography is just “a hobby,” anyone who has met Jimmy knows that it is a true passion.

Sergeant Major Jimmy Gibson retired from the U.S. Marine Corp in 1987 after serving his country proudly for 22 years. He was honored to have spent his last several years of duty stationed at Camp David guarding President Ronald Reagan. The Detroit native next set-up shop in Cleveland, OH, where he ran a successful handyman business for over 15 years. On the side, he was something of a Professional Piper, satisfying his love of music by playing the bagpipes for weddings, funerals, church services, and the like.

Now living in Spartanburg, Jimmy and his wife Karen are strong supporters of the arts. When not visiting the concert hall, the art museum, and other cultural events in town, the two are avid cyclists & triathletes – Jimmy spent many years as a professional cycling/ triathlete coach here in the upstate – and wine connoisseurs. They can be found frequenting the Piedmont Club and Carriage House Wines, where several of his photos can be seen hanging on the walls (including the image on page 10 of this program book).

We are so very fortunate to have Jimmy as a part of the SPO team.

We truly appreciate his dedication, positive energy, and eagle eye.
