So Pleased to Share....

...our pride and enthusiasm for the spectacular performances by our Spartanburg Philharmonic, Bluegrass, and Espresso Series musicians in this, our 91st year. In the course of this season we will do some very special things: Bluegrass kicks it all off in September with Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out followed by our Espresso “Baroque ‘n’ Glass” on the first Friday of October. The following week, we’ll open the doors to the fabulous, newly-renovated Zimmerli Performance Center with a performance of Rachmaninoff ’s epic 2nd Piano Concerto with Doug Weeks as soloist.

We are also pleased to dedicate our main symphonic series, now called the Zimmerli Classics Series, to Kurt & Nelly Zimmerli who have long supported our organization.

November will showcase Spartanburg’s local composers in our “Homegrown” Espresso concert, and in December, our Family series brings the 1982 short film “The Snowman” to the Chapman Cultural Center.

We burst into the New Year with an extraordinary tandem appearance by GRAMMY® award-winning Béla Fleck, first with Abigail Washburn on our Bluegrass series, then performing his Juno Concerto with our Philharmonic!

Your Visit to the Phil Restrooms: Restrooms at Twichell are located off of the first floor lobby and next to the handicap accessible entrance in the auditorium. Restrooms at Chapman are located to the left and right of the main entrance lobby.

Seating: Twichell Auditorium uses a reserved

seating system for our Zimmerli Classics series, so please keep your ticket with you at all times to verify section and seat specifics should there be any confusion. Youth Orchestra concerts are General Admission.

Chapman Cultural Center Theatre also uses a reserved ticket system for Bluegrass Spartanburg. For our Espresso Series, Chapman uses a General Admission system and does not reserve seating.

Ticket donation:

We are unable to issue refunds for unused tickets. However, if you are unable to attend a concert, we encourage you to donate your tickets. When you donate your tickets to the Spartanburg Philharmonic, you not only receive a donation tax receipt, but you also share your seat with another music lover. If you would like to give in this way, please notify our ticket office at least 24 hours prior to the performance.

Late seating: For the listening pleasure of our

audiences, late arriving patrons will not be seated while music is being performed. Latecomers will be seated at the first appropriate pause in the program (typically during applause). Additionally, we ask that patrons who must leave prior to the end of a performance exit only between selections if at all possible.

Food/Beverage: No food or drink, other than bottled water, is allowed in Twichell Auditorium.

Cameras, cell phones, recording devices, watch alarms, and similar devices: To ensure a quality experience for everyone, the use of flash-photography or video/audio recording equipment is strictly prohibited. Patrons are asked to turn off or mute (not just turn to vibrate) all personal electronic devices prior to the performance.

In Case of Emergency: Prior to the

performance, we request that you familiarize yourself with the locations of all exits in case of an emergency.

If the power to the building should be interrupted for any reason, generators will begin within 10 seconds for lighting.

Dear friends,

Through your support and patronage, the Spartanburg Philharmonic has seen tremendous growth over the last five years. We’ve increased the total number of concerts per season from 6 to 15 and we’ve added community programming such as the Spartanburg Music Trail. As many of you know, we will launch the first Spartanburg Philharmonic Youth Orchestra this fall which will offer an exceptional opportunity for over 80 students to participate in high-quality musical performances with a professional, dynamic conductor.

I’m tremendously proud of all we’ve accomplished together in this short time.

In an industry with a tendency to fret over audience attendance and demographics, the Spartanburg Philharmonic has flourished with positive response from our community.

Our average audience size has grown over 34% in the past four years and we continue to see increases in the number of subscribers who’ve joined our family. Our fantastic staff and Board have focused on growing the organization to offer even more high-quality music experiences for our community. This year we will debut a new Family Concert.

What we’ve done at the Spartanburg Philharmonic is truly extraordinary. The organization is in a strong financial and artistic position to continue this trajectory. With the artistic leadership of Stefan Sanders, the theme for the season is “Locally Sourced,” spotlighting local musicians, composers, and guest artists with our 90+ year heritage.

All of this work has brought visibility and attention to what we’ve accomplished here in Spartanburg. Yet none of this work was done alone. It takes an army on and off stage to make an orchestra thrive. You are a part of that army, too, friends. Dr. Joella Utley

(1935-2019)

Remembering an Extraordinary Life Dr. Joella Utley was a phenom in every sense of the word. Her talent, generosity, thirst for knowledge, and passion for the arts was unmatched.

Truly a lifelong scholar, she earned her undergraduate degree in music at Oklahoma City University before going to medical school to become a radiation oncologist. After years in the medical profession, she went on to earn her Masters in Music History at Converse College.

Joella’s reach and accomplishments extended far beyond her local influence. She and her late husband Dr. Joe Utley built an impressive collection of over 600 brass instruments including cornets, trumpets, bugles, horns, and a euphonium. Several of these are now located at the National Music Museum.

In addition to her work as a doctor, pianist, and music historian, she was also a dedicated patron of the Spartanburg Philharmonic, writing incredibly detailed and entertaining program notes.

Joella served on the board for several years, holding various positions, and was appointed a Lifetime Director. Most recently, she serving as Co-Chair of the Music Director Search Committee responsible for selecting current Maestro Stefan Sanders.

Stefan remembers Joella fondly as a local treasure for her work with the community.

“Always kind, always supportive, she meant so much to all of us. Her glorious legacy of bringing people and music together will live on in every phrase, every performance.”

Arrangements were made for a Service of Witness to the Resurrection on July 19, 2019 at the Sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church. The next day, friends and family conducted a memorial service and visitation at Greenlawn Chapel to honor her. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit, insatiable curiosity for learning, and her remarkable dedication to the arts and increasing the cultural footprint of Spartanburg.

Members of the Spartanburg Philharmonic elect six to eight colleagues to serve as an Orchestra Committee. This committee performs the duties in the Orchestra Manual, which outlines the responsibilities of both the orchestra members and the Philharmonic’s staff in preparing for and presenting outstanding concerts. This committee represent the interests of the musicians on the Artistic Committee, and a member serves as a non-voting member of the Board of Directors.

appearances include the Naples Philharmonic, Rochester Philharmonic, Virginia Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Austin Symphony Orchestra, Austin Opera, Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba, Orquesta Sinfónica de Guayaquil (Ecuador), Filharmonia Warminsko-Mazurska (Poland), and the Round Top International Festival Institute. Meet Stefan Sanders

Music Director

Stefan Sanders is a conductor and arts advocate cultivating cultures of artistic excellence, sustained growth, and enthusiastic engagement within the communities he is fortunate to serve. This year, Stefan embarks on his second season as Music Director for the Spartanburg Philharmonic. He will also begin his third season as Music Director for the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra in North Carolina seventh season and his seventh as the Music Director of the Central Texas Philharmonic.

Stefan will make debuts with the Bozeman Symphony in Montana and the Filharmonia Podkarpacka in Rzeszów, Poland. He will also make return engagements this season to the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba in Havana, the Filharmonia Warminsko-Mazurska in Olsztyn, Poland, the Stockton Symphony, and several weeks as the cover/assistant conductor for the New York Philharmonic.

Stefan has collaborated with many distinguished orchestras. Recent guest conducting

Stefan recently concluded a four year tenure with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Appointed its Associate Conductor in 2014, Stefan was promoted to Resident Conductor in 2016. While with the BPO, Stefan lead over 200 performances on all of the orchestra’s series. Of note, Stefan began his professional career as a member of the BPO’s trombone section where he played from 1999-2007 before pursuing conducting full time. He also recently concluded a one year appointment as Principal Conductor for the Hot Springs Music Festival in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Stefan was also featured conductor for the League of American Orchestras Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview. The prestigious conductor showcase is designed to feature talented young conductors poised for music directorships with American Orchestras and was hosted by Giancarlo Guerrero and the Nashville Symphony in May of 2016.

Prior to a career as a conductor, Stefan was an internationally renowned trombonist, having performed as a soloist in North America, Asia, and Europe. His performance of Eric Ewazen’s Concerto for Bass Trombone and Orchestra, with the Czech Philharmonic, can be heard on the Albany Records label. As a trombonist, Stefan performed with several orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, the Florida Orchestra, and the Seattle Opera’s 2001 production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle.

Stefan was a fellow at the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen under the tutelage of maestros, Robert Spano, Larry Rachleff and Hugh Wolff. He is a graduate of the Juilliard School, the University of Texas at Austin, and the Interlochen Arts Academy.

Notes from the Music Director RACH 2 Our first program of the 2019-2020 Zimmerli Classics Series commemorates the grand reopening of the Zimmerli Performance Center and Spartanburg’s historic cultural hub, Twichell Auditorium. To commemorate the evening, the Spartanburg Philharmonic’s Composer-in-Residence, Peter B. Kay, has composed a celebratory work entitled Phoenix dedicated to Kurt and Nelly Zimmerli to honor their truly exceptional support of music in our community.

In 1899, the year Twichell Auditorium was built, the music of Richard Wagner and Johannes Brahms continued to polarize musical aesthetics and tastes, even after their deaths in 1883 and 1897 respectively.

Wagner’s operas, or music dramas as he called them, advanced the areas of harmony, instrumentation, and in particular musical form; planting the seeds for a New German School that believed, “New wine required new bottles.”

musical aesthetics and traditions codified by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. Placed side by side on our program, Wagner’s Prelude to Act I of his lone comedic opera, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture gives listeners the opportunity to hear and appreciate the differences between two musical titans of the late 19th Century.

After the unsuccessful premier of his First Symphony in 1897, Sergei Rachmaninoff, unable to compose, fell into a clinical depression. With the help of psychotherapist and amateur viola player, Dr. Nikolai Dahl, Rachmaninoff was able to regain his confidence and in 1900 began working on one of most beloved piano concertos of all time, his Piano Concerto No. 2; dedicating it to his new hero, Dr. Dahl. The Philharmonic and I are thrilled to be performing this incredible work with our dear friend, Spartanburg’s own celebrated piano hero, Dr. Douglas Weeks.

The Snowman & other Holiday Favorites The magic of Christmas from a child’s perspective has inspired a multitude of songs, stories, and traditions.

This December the Philharmonic begins a new tradition; a Family Series designed for parents and children to share the joy of story-telling and music together with their own Spartanburg Philharmonic.

Along with holiday favorites and songs to sing along to, this hour long interactive performance features English author, Raymond Briggs’ celebrated picture book The Snowman, from 1978. Garnering several

awards after its publication, The Snowman was adapted into a half-hour animated television special with music by Howard Blake in 1982. The story tells the adventure of a young boy named James and his friend the snowman who fly to the North Pole together to meet Father Christmas. Blakes music beautifully underscores their voyage and includes the touching song, “Walking in the Air.” Read more on page 54

Bluegrass Spartanburg presents both international and local award-winning bluegrass bands in its four-show series.

In 2015, a small group of bluegrass fans living in Spartanburg partnered with the Chapman Cultural Center to bring worldclass bands to our hometown. The pilot season was such a success that they sought to expand with the help, experience, and leadership of the Spartanburg Philharmonic.

In the fall of 2017, in partnership with the Philharmonic, the series relaunched as“Bluegrass Spartanburg” and has seen enormous success ever since. Bluegrass Spartanburg hopes to continually offer its fans the opportunity to enjoy outstanding bluegrass music in the Upstate.

Inspire: Meeting a Fiddle Legend

An Educational Experience that Lead to a Lifetime of Music

For students of the arts, one of the most inspiring learning opportunities is to experience the work of artists that demonstrate excellence in technical and creative forms at the highest level of their field. Some of the most profound of these experiences are those that present something new to the student, expanding the range of inspiration for further learning the craft.

One such experience, made possible by Spartanburg Philharmonic programming, made a lasting impression on me. As a high school student and orchestra participant, I had the opportunity to attend a performance of the

Philharmonic featuring GRAMMY® Award winning violinist Mark O’Connor, whose musical works bend and bridge genres from bluegrass to jazz to classical. O’Connor’s compositions, performances, and collaborations with other top-tier musicians showcase a rigorous technical proficiency alongside a compelling creativity that draws from many sources. The Philharmonic performance brought this to life, to the delight of those attending.

While in Spartanburg for the concert with the symphony, O’Connor also visited our high school orchestra to speak about his experience as a musician and to demonstrate some of his fiddling techniques. For me, the exposure to an artist who had produced such a variety of output with the instrument I was learning was profound. In the years that followed this experience, I developed a greater interest in different genres, which in turn has fueled a lifelong interest in music, including a desire to attend live performances whenever possible.

Fast forward to 2019... I found myself walking through Merlefest, a bluegrass and Americana music festival held each Spring in Wilkesboro, NC. Merlefest celebrates the lives and music of Doc and Merle Watson, whose authentic blend of tradition and technique have inspired many musicians, drawing from – and influencing – oldtime, blues, country, bluegrass, rock, jazz, and gospel music. The variety of musical acts on display at this great event each year is remarkable, as is the technical quality of performance.

As I walked across the festival toward the main stage, I heard a distinct instrumental melody calling like a voice from the past, with dulcet string tones and a signature sound. Two violins sang out – played by Mark and Maggie O’Connor,

performing songs I had discovered following that first O’Connor performance I attended in Spartanburg. It was another memorable musical experience, one that felt like it had come full circle.

Those who relish this kind of musical discovery have similar opportunities with this season’s Spartanburg Philharmonic programming. One such occasion is the chance to hear Béla Fleck (page 70), one of the preeminent banjo players of all time. Although Fleck was preceded by artists who shaped the various techniques and forms of “traditional” banjo playing, no one has done more to demonstrate the versatility and unique relevance of the instrument. Just as Mark O’Connor’s techniques, compositions,

Educate: Discovering the Banjo From Africa to the Mountains of Appalachia

The resurgence of the banjo in popular music can be attributed to folk bands such as Mumford & Sons and The Avett Brothers. Due to this kind of popularity, the banjo is often pigeonholed as an instrument that was born solely from Bluegrass and Southern culture; however, limiting the instrument to these assumptions is inaccurate and does a great disservice to its rich history.

In his documentary “Throw Down Your Heart,” GRAMMY® Award-winning banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck strives to dispel these labels and traces the banjo’s origins back to West Africa. Originally called the “banjar,” the stringed gourd instrument was carried by enslaved Africans to North America.

It was there that it was appropriated by Americans, eventually becoming traditionally associated with the music of Appalachia. Intended to help American audiences understand that while banjos are often portrayed in mainstream media as an instrument that “rednecks” or “hillbillies” use, the documentary details the instrument’s important cultural origins in Caribbean and African music.

In order to bring educational awareness to this subject, the Spartanburg Philharmonic will present a Discovering the Banjo series consisting 22

of teaching artist residencies, film screenings of “Throw Down Your Heart,” and educational outreach programs that will culminate in a weekend of exhilarating performances by Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn.

On Friday, January 31, 2020, Fleck and Washburn will perform as a part of the Bluegrass Spartanburg concert series in Chapman Cultural Center. The following night, Fleck will perform his Juno Concerto with the full orchestra at the “Americana Masters” concert in Twichell Auditorium at Converse College (page 70). The program will also feature Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring Orchestral Suite and Golden State Romp from Lincoln Highway Suite by Spartanburg’s own Nolan Stolz.

To encourage broad access to music in schools, the Philharmonic will offer standard half-price tickets to any Classics concert for students and educators. This project represents an exciting crossing of genres for the Philharmonic, which has presented classical masterworks, chamber music, and new compositions for over 90 years.

Discovering the Banjo will also host award-winning

banjoist Kristin Scott Benson leading a week-long teaching residency with students at an elementary school in Spartanburg. Benson’s residency will focus on developing students’ creative capacities including imagination, critical thinking, and persistence. Benson will collaborate with teachers, thus strengthening the learning environment and expanding their capacity to engage students creatively. Students will then attend a banjo performance in their auditorium.

The Spartanburg Philharmonic is absolutely thrilled and honored to present these three influential banjoists in conjunction with the Discovering the Banjo series. A 16-time GRAMMY® Award recipient, Béla Fleck has also been nominated for 30 additional GRAMMYs and in more categories than any instrumentalist in the Award’s history.

A prolific composer, songwriter, and performer, having released 10 albums in 11 years, his wife Abigail Washburn won the 2016 GRAMMY® for Best Folk Album for her self-titled debut written with Béla. Banjo player extraordinaire Kristin Scott Benson is the 2018 recipient of the 9th annual Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass. She is also the four-time International Bluegrass Music Association’s Banjo Player of the Year. She has been a member of the GRAMMY®nominated Bluegrass band, The Grascals since 2008.

The Philharmonic will also partner with the Young Appalachian Musicians (YAM) program which provides Bluegrass music instruction to 300 students in grades 3-8 in rural Pickens County, SC. YAM students will be invited to engage with Discovering the Banjo programming through an essay contest. For the contest, students will view “Throw Down Your Heart” and write about how the film changed their perspective of the banjo.

The winning author(s) will receive free tickets to Béla Fleck’s performance with the Spartanburg Philharmonic and will be recognized during the concert.

The Spartanburg County Public Library, the Tryon Fine Arts Center, and the Carolina Music Museum in Greenville County (SC) will present free public screenings of Fleck’s documentary during this week. Both screenings will be moderated by local scholars and may include banjo demonstrations by local musicians.

The project conducts outreach in three South Carolina counties including Spartanburg, Tryon, Greenville, and Pickens. Reaching music lovers of all ages, student musicians, professional musicians, and educators, the goal of the program is to serve several distinct audiences across and beyond Spartanburg County while preserving and spreading the history of the banjo.

These performances are funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the SC Arts Commission.

Music in Education The Bigger Picture

From the National Association for Music Education to Neurological Research and Music Education Statistics to International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement, studies all agree: Students who participate in music are more successful in school. They are proven to score higher on standardized tests. Schools with music programs have higher estimated graduation and attendance rates than schools without music education. Students who majored in music make up a substantial part of college graduates who are admitted to medical school. The facts are telling.

There is clearly a correlation between strong music programs and improved academics, yet in many parts of this country, they are some of the first programs on the chopping block when it comes to budget cuts.

Thankfully, this is not the case in Spartanburg.

The school districts here are striving to expel this statistic with an emphatic push for the arts, and the rest of the community is eager to follow them. The Spartanburg Philharmonic’s 2019-2020 Season is focused on “Locally Sourced” music and musicians, especially the “Homegrown” Espresso concert in November. This concert features a myriad of local composers and performers, almost all of whom are either teachers in music education or products of Spartanburg’s music programs.

districts in Spartanburg share a similar approach.

I consistently hear a high level of musicianship from each of the ensembles at Spartanburg High School, and I can see the pride in the faces of the students as they are performing.”

Not only does music aid in the academic improvement of young adults, but if introduced early in education, it can significantly better the development of speech and motor skills, social skills, such as listening and communication, and emotional maturity and coping strategies.

Tyler Favors-Wood is a District 7 educator who teaches students with intellectual disabilities and learning disabilities at The Cleveland Academy of Leadership. She has witnessed firsthand the positive effects that music has had on children in her classroom. She maintains that most importantly music, “allows students to be their most authentic selves. I have observed a music class, when my students transition to related arts, and witnessed how engaged and immersed my students were in the world of music. I value the music programs in schools because it provides an outlet for students but also another resource for teachers to help us diversify our lessons.”

Kay (Spartanburg High School graduate, Philharmonic Composerin-Residence, and professor of music at Furman University and Converse College), Holt McCarley (Dorman High School graduate), John Moody (USC graduate and Spartanburg High School composition teacher), Carrie Leigh Page (music teacher at School for the Deaf and the Blind and President of the International Alliance for Women in Music), Pedro Sanjuán (former professor at Converse College and conductor of the Philharmonic), Scott Robbins (professor of composition at Converse College), and Tristan Willcox (student at Spartanburg High School), the “Homegrown” concert (page 27) gives the audience a glimpse into the music community and the result of cultivating music education to enrich the lives of the people in Spartanburg. continued on page 30

According to John Moody, the support for local composers in Spartanburg has grown and improved exponentially since the formation of the Philharmonic’s Espresso Series and the founding of Treefalls, which is a nonprofit that promotes contemporary chamber music by living, active composers, often from underrepresented groups. “There is now opportunity to have music played by great musicians and to hear some of the best new music in the nation right here in Spartanburg!”

As an up-and-coming composer and Moody’s student, Tristan Willcox has also benefited from the tight-knit music community here. At the ripe age of 16, he has performed at Jazz on the Square, Spring Fling, and Dickens of a Christmas.

Additionally, his duet for piano and violin, Ilia, has been performed in Daniel Recital Hall at Converse College, and now one of his latest compositions will be performed in the “Homegrown” concert.

Tristan’s hope as a composer is for his music to emulate the moments in life. He muses, “music is an experience, and like any other experience, it can either be good or bad. I want to make sure that my music is an experience people will never forget. I want to change people, touch their hearts, make them feel things they haven’t felt before. Spartanburg has been a wonderful place for me to experience life through music.”

Not all students learn by using the same methods.

More and more teachers are recognizing this and moving away from traditional styles and using

more varied teaching styles to cater towards students’ needs. Music offers an alternative avenue that children so desperately crave in school.

Carrie Leigh Page, local composer and K-12 music teacher at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind, believes that music can be used as a tool for interdisciplinary learning for students as well as co-teaching and collaborating with other teachers in the classrooms. “I love it when the science teacher drops by my room with his high school physical science students and we can talk about the overtone series and that physics of sound by opening the piano and bringing out guitars.”

Music brings emotional depth, breadth, creativity, and hope to both students and teachers.

- John Akers, Wofford College These type of interactive experiences keep students engaged, actively learning, and having fun while utilizing various kinesthetic, aural, and interpersonal learning styles. Page thinks that schools should make more room and time for these programs to flourish. She states that, “if administrators and legislators will give teachers more time to plan interdisciplinary and artbased lessons and units in conjunction with arts educators, you would have happier, healthier schools from top to bottom, with deeper and more productive learning based in experiences, team-work, and problem-solving.”

The Spartanburg Philharmonic aims to elevate the community by offering a selection of music programs. The Philharmonic offers the Youth Orchestra (page 46), apprentice programs, and internships for young adults in high school and college. Additionally, they provide music education and outreach programs that are easily accessible to the public.

In particular, Music Sandwiched In (page 52) is a free, open to the public lecture-performance during lunch hours in the Barrett Community Room at the Spartanburg County Public Library Headquarters. The program runs from August to May throughout the Philharmonic’s season, every other Wednesday from 12:15 PM-1:00 PM. Attendees can bring their own lunch or purchase a catered lunch. It is the perfect way to fit in a little slice of culture into your busy work week.

Link Up (page 62) is another program that also enriches the community by providing free, yearlong curriculum to all 4th graders in Spartanburg County. In partnership with Carnegie Hall’s Weil Institute, every spring Spartanburg Philharmonic gathers over 4,000 youth with recorders in Twichell Auditorium to participate in a concert with the orchestra.

Leslie Shealy teaches 2K-4th grade and 8-12th grade chorus at Spartanburg Day School and hopes to bring her students to participate in Link Up this coming year. To her, collaboration and cooperation among each other is the most important aspect her students can take away from music. Everyone has to be on the beat, singing the right note at the right time for a piece to work. Each student holds an individual piece of the puzzle that they are responsible for adding to the picture. She says that they learn to work together to “contribute to something bigger than themselves.”

That is precisely what these educators, students, advocates, and musicians are contributing to the community. Something bigger than themselves.

A piece of the culture. A vital connection to the rest of the world. Music is and will continue to be the most significant and precious gift that can be given to a community. Music is the bigger picture.

Meet Callie Brennan

Interim Concertmaster

Callie Brennan hails from the sunny state of Maine, which is where she first held a violin at the tender age of four. As an adolescent she studied with Ronald Lantz of the Portland String Quartet, and received regular coachings in chamber music from the PSQ. While pursuing her Bachelor’s degree at The University of Colorado, Callie studied with Lina Bahn and Harumi Rhodes. During this time she studied abroad in Sydney, Australia, studying with Ole Bohn at the Sydney Conservatorium.

This travel prompted her to look abroad for postgraduate study, and led her to The Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In 2016 she moved to London, England, where she completed two Masters Degrees in Music and Violin performance.

During her studies at Guildhall, Callie studied with Stephanie Gonley and Ofer Falk, and had numerous opportunities to receive coachings from other internationally renowned musicians.

She performed twice under the baton of Sir

Callie has an extensive background in chamber music, having been coached by ensembles such as the Portland String Quartet, the Takacs Quartet, the Heath Quartet, Endellion Quartet, and the Zodiac Trio. As a member of the Ember String Quartet, she traveled to Spain in July 2017, attending the Fringe Festival in Torroella di Montgri. Callie was also a member of The Orchid Trio, which was awarded the St. James Chamber Music prize and a recital opportunity in Piccadilly Circus, London. In February 2018 Callie was named the Ernest Read Symphony Orchestra’s Soloist of the year, which led to her first solo performance with an orchestra; She performed the Walton Violin Concerto under the direction of Peter Stark at St. John’s Church, Waterloo.

Callie has had the pleasure of performing on The Barbican Stage and in Royal Festival Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and Boettcher Hall in Denver. Other global performance experience includes a quartet residency for the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland’s summer strings courses, and attending the “Renaissance in the XXI Century” summer course in Florence, Italy. Other music festivals include the Zodiac Music Festival (France), The Bowdoin International Music Festival (USA), and The Colorado Music Festival (USA).

After moving to Asheville in 2018, Callie has enjoyed regular performance opportunities with the Asheville Symphony Orchestra, Brevard Philharmonic, and served as Principal 2nd of the Spartanburg Philharmonic in the spring of 2019.

She also holds a position with the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra. Callie plays on a 2005 Christopher Edel violin, made in Boston, MA. When she’s not practicing or in rehearsal, she is most likely hiking, traveling, and eating alarming amounts of chocolate.

Phoenix

(Cathedral)

Peter B.Kay (1980-)

Commissioned this year (2019) to commemorate the reopening of Twichell Auditorium in the Zimmerli Performance Center, and to honor the newly renamed Zimmerli Classic Series, Phoenix (Cathedral) is dedicated to Kurt & Nelly Zimmerli who have devoted so much time, energy, and support to building a lasting legacy of music in Spartanburg.

The piece takes inspiration from the fiery legend of the phoenix – an ancient animal that is reborn again and again from its ashes. But rather than focusing on the moments of death & rebirth, the piece aims to

capture the eternal nature of the mythical creature. Often with spiritual and religious undertones, the phoenix has symbolized a myriad of ideas throughout human history: the sun, time, resurrection, and consecration to name a few.

The life of the phoenix is far-reaching, spanning countless generations.

Phoenix (Cathedral) celebrates Twichell Auditorium, the city’s “cathedral of music.” It celebrates Spartanburg’s musical heritage, and it celebrates Kurt & Nelly Zimmerli who have done so much ensure the future of music in our community for many years to come.

Academic Festival Overture Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)

In 1878 Brahms was awarded a Doctorate in Philosophy by the University in Breslau, Germany. The citation of the honorary degree claimed that the composer was “First among contemporary masters of serious music.” Brahms had an intense dislike for pompous or pretentious situations. He did not feel especially reverential when the University conferred the honorary degree. He therefore did not attend the ceremony conferring the degree.

In fact, he thought a postcard would be sufficient acknowledgment until

his friend, Bernhard Scholz, Director of Music in Breslau, made it clear that the University would expect him to express his gratitude in musical form such as a “Doktor-Symphonie” or “at least a solemn song.”

In appreciation for this honor he wrote his somewhat mocking Academic Festival Overture in the summer of 1880 and performed it first at the University on January 4, 1881. Brahms called the overture “a very boisterous potpourri of student songs.” In fact, excerpts from four student beer-hall continued on page 38

The Overture is artful, humorous and rather non-academic. Although Brahms had never been a student at any university he had participated in student life in Gottingen in 1853. The Overture is a student-eye view of the nobility of learning. The music has a sense of fun and borrows melodies from student songs about beauty, immaturity, parody, and glorification.

It’s been said that as Beethoven dominated the first half of the Romantic period in music, the second half belongs to Richard Wagner. This composer was an innovator especially in his operas. Wagner was attracted to mythological subjects featuring magic, giants, dragons and Germanic gods, but he was also drawn to ideas of love’s magical powers. Of his 13 operas, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg is his only comic opera and tells of a love competition between Walther and Beckmesser for the hand of a young woman, Eva. The winner of the song contest gains the

Overture fooled the audience, but when the familiar tunes blared out in full symphonic dress, the students were so delighted that they joined in with their own irreverent words, which must have completely satisfied Brahms’ sense of mischief. The score uses the largest orchestra ensemble Brahms was ever to employ: piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, one tuba, timpani, bass drum, cymbals, triangle and strings.

Piano Concerto no. 2 Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943)

Composer and piano virtuoso, Sergei Rachmaninoff, distinguished himself at a young age with his creative musical abilities, graduating from the Moscow Conservatory at age eighteen with the school’s highest honor, the Great Gold Metal. His early compositions, which came easily, made him popular in Russia. He was described as being as popular as Tchaikovsky had been in his day.

Therefore, it was a severe blow to Rachmaninoff when, in 1891, the premiere of his Symphony No. 1, was poorly received by the critics and audience. It did not help that the conductor, Alexander Glazunov, was highly intoxicated that evening.

After this experience Rachmaninoff became quite dejected and composed very little. He received supportive help from Dr. Nikolay Dahl who specialized in hypnotic therapy.

After six months of this suggestive treatment Rachmaninoff came out of his slump and began composing the second and third movements of his second piano concerto. The first movement was completed and the work premiered on October 17, 1901 at the Moscow Philharmonic Society.

This concerto opens with a series of increasingly intense, chords from the piano that sound “like church bells.”

Of technical note, Rachmaninoff’s hands were large; each hand could reach a span of twelve notes. These chords are accompanied by rapid runs after which the orchestra joins in with the lyrical melodies. The second movement, beautifully romantic, features woodwinds and later strings with light passage work from the piano. The third and final movement is dramatic with a marchlike beat and features a grand, flowing melody. More often than not it’s the orchestra, not the soloist, which has the melodies.

Today, Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto is considered one of the best known and best loved of all piano concertos. Its unforgettable themes can be heard in several film scores as well as in popular songs such as Frank Sinatra’s “Full Moon and Empty Arms” “I Think of You” and “Ever and Forever”. The themes are frequently used as background music in figure skating and gymnastic programs.

America as soloist and as pianist in the Converse Trio, and in Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia both as soloist and as a violin-piano duo with Furman Professor Dr. Thomas Joiner under the auspices of the US State Department. In spring of 1999, he taught at the Conservatory of Music in Cairo as a Fulbright Senior Scholar, and he returned in 2004 and 2009 to teach at the Conservatory and at Helwan University as a Fulbright Senior Specialist.

Douglas Weeks Piano Steinway Artist Douglas Weeks is Babcock Professor of Piano at Converse College and Coordinator of Piano Studies at the Brevard Music Festival. Since joining the Converse faculty in 1982, he has appeared with the Spartanburg Philharmonic numerous times in performances of piano concerti by Beethoven, Gershwin, Liebermann, Mozart, Poulenc, and Rachmaninoff under the batons of maestros Henry Janiec, Bill Scott, and Sarah Ioannides. In addition to performing extensively throughout the Southern U.S., he has performed in Europe and Central

A prize winner in the Robert Casadesus International Piano Competition (now the Cleveland International Competition), Weeks also competed in the VI International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. A National Patron of Delta Omicron Music Honorary Fraternity, he is a recipient of the South Carolina Arts Commission’s Artist Fellowship in Music, the Kathryne Amelia Brown Award at Converse College for Excellence in Teaching, and a South Carolina Commission on Higher Education’s Distinguished Professor Award. Articles by Weeks have appeared in Clavier magazine and in the on-line journal Piano Pedagogy Forum.

This season, the Spartanburg Philharmonic is proud to present the newly formed Youth Orchestra for instrumental students in Spartanburg, SC and surrounding areas. With the goal of bringing together the best talent in the area, the Philharmonic will offer an unparalleled symphonic experience to students ages 14-19. This new ensemble will provide a rewarding educational opportunity for talented young musicians in the greater Spartanburg area who wish to expand their knowledge of orchestral literature as well as participate in high-quality musical performances with a professional, dynamic conductor.

Our first auditions were held in May of this year, and after a massive turnout, over 80 students were accepted into the budding program! Visit the Philharmonic website for more information about the Youth Orchestra and its upcoming concerts.

Masquerade Suite Aram Khachaturian (1903-1978)

Aram Khachaturian is considered one of the “Titans” of Soviet music alongside Prokofiev and Shostakovich. His Masquerade Suite was originally written as incidental music for a production of the play Masquerade by Mikhail Lermontov, however it is much better known in this five-movement suite.

The tragic story begins with friends Arbenin and Prince Zvezdich at a grand masquerade ball. While at the ball, Prince Zvezdich flirts with a mystery woman, known only as The Baroness, who gives her bracelet to the Prince as a memento of her affection.

Corral Nocturne Aaron Copland (1900-1990)

There, she runs into the Prince who mistakes her for the mystery women.

Rumors circle of her supposed flirtation, and eventually they find their way back to he husband.

Arbenin is instantly enraged, and he begins to plot his revenge.

Hearing the rumors, The Baroness comes forward and explains herself to the Prince. The Prince tries to warn Nina of her husband’s anger, but to no avail. That same night, Nina falls ill, and Arbenin explains that he has poisoned her. She desperately tries to explain the misunderstanding, but he will not listen. He callously allows her to die.

Late that evening, Arbenin returns home to see that his wife, Nina, is missing a bracelet similar to The Baroness’s gift to the Prince. Nina assures Arbenin that she simply dropped it at the ball, and she returns to the ballroom to search for her missing bracelet.

The Prince arrives too late, but upon seeing that Nina has been murdered, he shows Arbenin a letter that proves Nina’s innocence. Arbenin, stricken with grief and immense guilt, goes insane.

Corral Nocturne was written as a part of Copland’s famous ballet Rodeo and choreographed by Agnes de Mille for the Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo.

Many of Copeland’s compositions integrate parts of American folk tunes; however, in this composition, many of the folk tunes are kept intact and played in their entirety. Because of this, the piece is set apart from most of Copeland’s other compositions.

Agnes de Mille explains that in this piece, “[The Cowgirl] run[s] through the empty corrals intoxicated with space, her feet thudding in the stillness.” Her lonesome gait is demonstrated through Copeland’s heavy use of oboe and bassoon.

Dream Machine Brian Balmages

Holding a Bachelor’s Degree from James Madison University and a Master’s Degree from the University of Miami in Florida, Brian Balmages is a skilled and passionate composer and conductor. His music has been performed at the international level and is loved by many. His piece Dream Machine is a beautiful piece

full of wonder and magic. It mimics the uneasiness and mystical sensation of being in a transitional sleep state, floating in and out of consciousness.

A dream world full of vibrant color, shapes, and impossible scenarios flourish to life in Balmages’ haunting artistry.

Originally written as St. John’s Eve on Bald Mountain, this is Mussorgsky’s most well-known piece. Mussorgsky was inspired by Russian literary works and legends to complete this piece on June 23, 1867. He was proud of his work, but his mentor, Miliy Balakirev, refused to perform it.

Mussorgsky attempted to insert the music into various projects; however, he was unsuccessful, and it was never performed during his lifetime.

In 1886, Rimsky-Korsakov later found Mussorgsky’s work and made it his own. Through his rework of the original piece, it became successful.

Night on Bald Mountain achieved most of its fame in the Disney movie, Fantasia. Mussorgsky’s original version was not published until 1968 and is still very rarely performed.

Russian Chorale Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

A student of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, Tchaikovsky set himself apart at an early stage in his career as a composer. Due to the formal Western-oriented teaching he received at the conservatory, he did not follow the contemporary nationalist movement that many Russian composers, including “The Five,” embodied. He went on to create his own style that combined both Russian styles and Western styles of music.

It blends brass and strings together in a beautifully woven melody that soars over the audience before jumping into an upbeat Overture. It wavers between the Chorale and the Overture, giving it a complex feel and producing a breathtaking blanket of sound that captivates the audience.

band, and marching band were recognized for their artistic well-prepared performances and consistently received superior ratings at district and state music performance assessments.

At Converse College, when not conducting the Converse Wind Ensemble, Dr. Lalama teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in instrumental music education and conducting, and supervises student teachers in instrumental music.

She also serves as the adviser of the Collegiate National Association for Music Education at Converse. She serves on the South Carolina Music Educators Association executive board as Chair of Music Teacher Educators, President-Elect for the Higher Education Division, and Editor of the SC Musician, the official publication of SCMEA.

Meet Susana Lalama

Susana M. Lalama, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Music Education and Conductor of the Wind Ensemble at Converse College. Prior to her graduate degrees, she was Director of Bands at Barbara Goleman High School in Miami, Florida.

Dr. Lalama is an active scholar, presenter, and researcher in music education. She has presented music education workshops on topics such as such as strategies for teaching beginning band, teaching intonation, classroom management for large ensembles, the student teaching experience, avoiding teacher pitfalls, and bringing out the artistry in teaching. Her research interests include perceptions of teacher caring, student social behaviors, and music teacher identity.

She has been recognized in Who’s Who Among American Teachers and was honored in 2009 for the Women in Action organization by being named Outstanding Woman of the Year. She is a member of many national and international professional organizations and has conducted several honor bands regionally. Dr. Lalama currently serves as an active band clinician, adjudicator, instrumental music education consultant, and mentor to new teachers.

History of the Snowman

Originally published in 1978, The Snowman, created and illustrated by Raymond Briggs, has become one of the world’s most popular children’s books, selling in excess of 8.5 million copies worldwide and being translated into over 15 languages.

In 1982, the book was adapted as a 26-minute animated film by TVC (at the time the UK’s longest established animation studio) and was first shown in the UK on Dec. 26,1982. It has since been shown every year on the

About Raymond Briggs Author

Born in 1934 in Wimbledon, South London, Raymond Briggs studied at the Wimbledon School of Art, and the Slade School of Fine Art. When he graduated in 1957, he immediately started writing and illustrating, and in 1961 also began work as a parttime lecturer in illustration at Brighton Polytechnic.

That Raymond both writes and illustrates is evident in his work. As he himself said, “The whole point of illustration is that it is literary. If it is not, it remains a drawing only.” His early illustration work included Ringa-Ring o’ Roses, published in 1962, and The Mother Goose Treasury, published in 1966. The characteristic visual and verbal style of Raymond is well-known and recognized, and can be seen at its best in the comic strip style books for which he is possibly best known. The hilarious Father Christmas (1973) won the Kate Greenaway medal, and The Snowman is a favorite across all age-ranges.

The idea had been around for seven years. It had been filed away until there was time to work on it. I think it originally came from seeing an old black and white strip cartoon in a children’s comic when I was evacuated in the war. I vaguely remember two snowmen coming to life and one of them clambering over a window sill into a house. Where the flying came from I cannot remember, but the idea seemed perfectly natural.

Perhaps it is because snow lightly floats down out of the sky, so it seems reasonable that a snowman can lightly float up again.

Most of my ideas seem to be based on a simple premise: let’s assume that something imaginary – a snowman or a bogeyman – is wholly real, and then proceed logically from there. If a snowman came to life and was invited into a house, he would never have seen an electric light, a television, or washing-up liquid. He would learn to avoid the fire and the radiators but would love the refrigerator and freezer. It is just common sense and that is all there is to it.”

The Snowman: A Family Tradition A Tribute for my Dad on his Birthday

Before Ana asked Elsa if she wanted to build a snowman in Disney’s Frozen, Raymond Briggs invited his readers to do the same. Briggs released his classic wordless book The Snowman in 1978 and it was adapted into a cartoon in 1982. The Snowman book and movie have been a constant presence in my family’s life. I can’t remember the first winter that I learned of the story, but in my mind, it has always been there.

The Snowman tells the story of a young boy, James, and his snowman. With boundless excitement James builds a snowman in his backyard, complete with a tangerine nose, coal buttons, hat and scarf. That night James tosses in his bed almost anticipating the magic that is soon to come. He awakes and goes outside to find that the snowman has come to life. Like a good friend, James introduces him to the human world.

The Snowman learns about Christmas ornaments, television, playing dress up, and the dangers of a fireplace. After a ride through the forest on a motorcycle, the snowman takes James’ hand.

Together they run through the snow and begin to fly. The music crescendos and models their ascent as the hauntingly beautiful song, “Walking in the Air,” narrates their flight.

Together they fly through the midnight blue above snow covered roof tops, icy mountains, and ocean creatures before landing at the edge of a forest.

The music forebodingly beckons them into the deep woods. They’re greeted by jovial dancing snowmen holding pint glasses. Father Christmas himself gifts James with a scarf after dancing a festive jig with him and the snowmen party, and…. well, you just need to come see the movie at the Family Concert in December (page 54)!

As a little girl my dad would tuck me in every night and sing “Walking in the Air.” Although it has been covered by over 40 different artists since 1982, none can compare the sound of my father’s voice. As he sang, I’d drift to sleep with thoughts of taking flight and gliding through the crisp winter air with a magical snowman by my side.

It was and is and always will be “our” song – a shared soundtrack to my childhood and his fatherhood. The song has meant different things to me at different points of my life. I knew my dad had a special song planned for our father/ daughter dance at my wedding but he wouldn’t tell me what song he had chosen. I walked to the center of the dance floor and waited in anticipation of what song it would be. By the third note I was in tears as I held my dad’s neck. We danced to commemorate the end of one season of our relationship and the start of a new one.

One night, soon after my first son was born, I heard my dad’s soft voice coming from the living room. I walked in to find him cuddling my baby and singing our song over him, passing on a tradition and inviting the newest member of the family into something just the two of us had shared. Now all four of my sons know the song and the story of The Snowman. Every winter season we snuggle on the couch under blankets while my youngest clutches his stuffed Snowman.

Time has a way of handing the baton to the next generation. I hold them as the parent, the one who sings, rather than the one who is sung to. I cherish knowing that I sit in the middle of three generations that sings of walking in the air on magical snowy nights.

Memory endures within music. It has the power to transport us back in time to relive joyous memories and tender moments. “Walking in the Air” will always be a musical thread connecting my father and I throughout our lives.

The story of The Snowman challenges us to live with joy and exuberance, to cherish those around us and allow those experiences, no matter how fleeting or impermanent they might be, to mold and shape us.

Zimmerli Performance Center Twichell Auditorium Renovations in 2019 For several decades, Kurt and Nelly Zimmerli have been major benefactors of the arts at Converse College and in the Spartanburg community. As parents of a Converse graduate and dedicated citizens of Spartanburg, they have worked together on countless philanthropic projects to bring improvements to the campus.

Their most recent venture is to lead a $3.5 million fundraising campaign that will supply the first major renovations to Twichell Auditorium in 30 years. Since the project’s inception, the couple made a lead gift towards the effort that raised $2.85 million. To commemorate their generous commitment, Twichell Auditorium was recently renamed the Zimmerli Performance Center.

The Zimmerlis’ patronage for the arts in Spartanburg started when Kurt joined the Converse Board of Trustees in 1983. In addition to serving as chair of both the Finance Committee and the Buildings and Grounds Committee, he later became a Life Trustee in 2004. During his term, Kurt oversaw the design and construction of Phifer Science Hall, Milliken Fine Arts Building, and the Weisiger Center at the Sally Abney Rose Physical Activity Complex. Kurt and Nelly have also championed efforts to fund the Petrie School of Music. This included granting endowed scholarships for students, endowed funding for instrument repairs, gifts for Steinway pianos that led to Converse becoming the

first women’s college to achieve All-Steinway School designation, donations aiding in facility improvements, and support for various performances and events.

Following the dedication of the new Zimmerli Performance Center, friends of the Zimmerlis gathered to toast the unveiling. Converse Life Trustee and former Spartanburg Mayor Bill Barnet reflected on the tremendous impact Kurt has made in the community throughout the years.

“It is important to recognize that there is not one building that I know of on this campus that his patience, skill, love for the campus, quality of engineering, and his ability to incorporate great taste into a building are not present. He is a project engineer, but he is more than that, and he has given his life to making this campus – as he has to Spartanburg – something very special.”

Since opening in 1899, Twichell Auditorium has become a monumental piece of Spartanburg history. Because of this, the Zimmerlis have dedicated their efforts to preserving the history of the auditorium while making necessary enhancements.

Praised for its outstanding acoustics, it is one of the few performance venues in the South that houses a 57-rank Casavant Frères organ with more than 2,700 pipes. Throughout the years, the 1,500-seat auditorium has held performances from prominent artists such as Tony Bennett, Chet Atkins, George Burns, Duke Ellington, Burl Ives, Itzhak Perlman, Yo Yo Ma, and Marilyn Horne.

Additionally, it was named an historic John Philip Sousa site to recognize the many performances given by Sousa and his band in the early twentieth century. Along with its famed past, Twichell is also frequently home to performances by Converse School of the Arts, Spartanburg Philharmonic, and Ballet Spartanburg.

President of Converse College, Krista Newkirk thanked the Zimmerlis for their dedication, expressing that, “preserving Twichell is essential to providing an accessible, functional and

beautiful setting for the events of many different Spartanburg community organizations, and especially for our Converse School of the Arts...

Kurt and Nelly, we honor your leadership and vision as we fulfill your dream of ensuring that Twichell Auditorium remains a showcase for worldclass performances” Twichell is projected to be closed until early October for more extensive construction projects.

Renovations to the facility include: • Improved ADA access with additional ADA parking, installation of automatic door operators, a two-stop interior lift, accessible restrooms and auditorium seating; • State-of-the-art audio/video system, speakers, amplifiers, digital console, stage monitors, intercom; • Revitalization of interior space with renovated bathrooms, refinished flooring, and new windows; • Improved climate control with new HVAC system and electrical work; • Restored and new theatrical and orchestra LED lighting; • Stage improvements with new curtains, orchestra pit, stage floor, and stage rigging; • New roof and exterior facade With news of the renovations, then Spartanburg Philharmonic Board Chair Rachel Deems announced a new partnership between Converse and the Philharmonic that secures Twichell Auditorium as the orchestra’s home for the next three years.

For 120 years, Twichell Auditorium has been a centerpiece of culture in Spartanburg. Thanks to the Zimmerlis, the site will continue to be a time capsule of the past, present, and future Spartanburg.

Educate: Linking to the Future The Carnegie Hall Link Up Program

The recorder. You know (and I know) that images of school children blowing plastic instruments of torture in your living room terrorizing family pets, parents, and the ears of all within reach just flashed in your mind. But wait! Learning the recorder in the 4th grade has meaning and purpose for schools that participate in The Carnegie Hall Link Up Program with the Spartanburg Philharmonic.

I teach in Spartanburg District 7 and have been fortunate to instruct students using this curriculum for just short of 10 years. The difference it makes in reaching young musicians cannot be understated.

I am very thankful that the Philharmonic works with the school districts and sponsors like J.M. Smith Corporation, The Carlos Moseley Trust, and The Johnson Group who provide this interactive experience for our students.

That’s right – I said interactive. They don’t just “sit and get” on their field trip to “see the symphony”.

No, those concert experiences are all too common around the country, and frankly, do not do much

to engage students. Our students get to play and sing with the orchestra. The curriculum arrives in the fall of the year and includes softcover color workbooks for each student that they get to write in, and keep, as well as a multitude of online educator materials provided through Carnegie Hall. Activities include the basics in reading the treble clef, introduction into simple composition, understanding musical elements like rhythm, dynamics, and motif, and a look at the instruments of the orchestra. There are nine to ten classical pieces for students to learn to play on the recorder or sing from composers including Strauss, Mendelssohn, and Bizet. The program includes original compositions the kids just love! There are pieces that the orchestra plays for the students that we study in class ahead of time. This year those were pieces by Mozart and Beethoven.

I cannot tell you how exciting this is for the kids!

They are so eager to pile on those school buses with those recorders in hand. They file into

Twichell Auditorium a bit nervous and delighted to see all those real musicians on stage. Some of these musicians are their teachers, neighbors, doctors, bankers and friends – that does not go unnoticed. They take their part in the concert very seriously. The Philharmonic starts with narrators that engage the kids and make the experience not only entertaining but fun. The students play and sing and laugh and engage with the symphony. It’s a grand time!

Most importantly, 5th grade enrollment in band and orchestra programs has increased since my school started participating in the Link Up Program. I’d estimate 75% of our students signed up to play a string, woodwind, percussion, or brass instrument this year alone. My school choir has also exploded. I truly credit our participation in Philharmonic’s Link Up Concert for much of this growth. Students realize they can play an instrument, and they can be a part of an orchestra (or a band). Singing isn’t so bad and is (dare I say it) fun. They don’t just see an orchestra at the Link Up Concert, they are a part of the orchestra. They make the music in tandem with professionals, and trust me, it makes a tremendous difference.

Our performing ensembles must continue. The gift of music and what it does for the human spirit to

perform and experience the works of The Masters and new composers cannot be underestimated.

The thrill of individuals coming together to present a work that moves both performer and audience is threatened by stereotypes of stodgy old men in penguin suits not in touch with today’s youth. Playing and singing in groups is threatened by technology that disillusions students into thinking that a MP3 of a piece provides them with a total musical experience and that this will be enough. We must not only provide music to the next generations; we must provide musical experiences for these children.

They need to create, participate, and be involved in the production of the music to make a lasting and transformational experience for our future musicians. The participation of the Spartanburg Philharmonic in the Link Up program does that for the 9 and 10-year old students in our community.

This program not only shows them a symphony, it inspires them. It inspires future orchestra, band, and chorus members hopefully ensuring that all of us will continue to eagerly enter concert halls and revel in the music for years to come. Thank you for providing this link to our future. Play on!
