t pleases me to know that 97 percent of new homebuyers across the country are satisfied with their recent home purchases. This is one of many interesting Marianne Bornhoft, statistics from the National 2013 President Spokane Association of REALTORSŽ Association of REALTORS’Ž 2013 Profile of Buyers’ Home Feature Preferences.

This annual survey tells us a great deal about the 31 named features buyers prefer when they are out searching for a home. What a buyer wants changes depending on who you are, where you are and the make up of your family.

Total up all the homes across the country today and the average home was built in 1996, has 1,860 square feet, three bedrooms, two full bathrooms and a garage.

Top of the list among all features that people want in a new home is a garage.

78 percent of homebuyers choose a house with one. These days, a double or even triple garage is a “must-have� item for many – more so in wider communities here in the west, less so in compact communities back east.

Next on the list is central air conditioning. This is very important to 65 percent of homebuyers. After days like we’ve had recently here in the Inland Northwest, I can fully appreciate why this would be so important. We all want to be comfortable at home in all seasons. Central air lets us enjoy the hottest days of summer in a cool, relaxing environment – especially important to get a good night’s sleep.

Here are a couple of interesting findings: single women tend to buy older homes in established neighborhoods; single men tend to buy newer homes with cathedral ceilings. 57 percent of all homebuyers want a home with a fireplace.

Within three months of buying a house, most of us do some remodeling – most commonly in the kitchen – with an average project cost of $4,550. More than a third of us replace light fixtures and appliances within three months of moving day. The majority of new homebuyers – regardless of the size of the house – wish they had more and larger closets and more storage.

It’s easy to see in these numbers why hardware and home improvement stores are popular places to visit on the weekends.

If you have recently moved in to a new house, odds are you are among that 97 percent who are happy with your purchase. If you are thinking about moving in to a new house, that number should offer some comfort – it’s almost a certainty that you will be happy in your new home.
