starkness. Sleek floors and reflective surfaces such as exposed metals and glass complete the effect. Perhaps the most notable difference between modern and contemporary styling is the overall effect each achieves. Modern design creates a retro effect because it features vintage pieces or new pieces inspired by vintage designs, such as Eames chairs, Formica tables and bent plywood. In contrast, contemporary design tends to create a futuristic effect through the use of modular furnishings, asymmetry, open floor plans and recycled and composite materials. Combining pieces from different eras and styles can create a space that’s predominantly, but not purely modern or contemporary, for a pleasingly warm and welcoming effect. “This is what I am seeing a lot of,” Bergelt says, “and it’s also my favorite way of designing. I like to call it classic-contemporary.”

CTW In the Now: Contemporary design elements follow the current styles and what’s popular now. In 2012, that includes modular leather seating and a mix of natural and synthetic materials, including hardwood flooring and a Lucite side table.

CTW Period Piece: Modern decor is a distinct style that originated from the 1920s to 1970s. Iconic modern pieces include an authentic Eames chair and a Noguci-inspired coffee table, above.
