Horn’s considerable musical repertoire includes surprisingly enjoyable yodel-heavy versions of ‘The Austrian Amazon’ tunes originally performed by Madonna, AC/DC returns to Spokane and other contemporary musicians. Following “The Austrian Amazon” is back, wearing the the Oktoberfest season, Horn will head back to crown as “The Queen of Oktoberfest” again, and the studio with her band to record their second she’s got plenty more tricks up her sleeve to get album of beer-themed party songs. the beer hall bouncing.

“I’m bringing over a dozen new beerthemed party songs,” Manuela Horn wrote in a recent email. “We will play beer pong with the entire venue.”

Oktoberfest guests should expect the unexpected with Horn presiding once again: conga lines, party games (including beer pong), yodeling contests, traditional and brand-new Oktoberfest songs and much more.

Horn teased a short sequence called “Oktoberfest Bachelor,” where her sidekick Mr. Big (left) will look for “the love of his life” amongst the Oktoberfest crowd.

One of the most signature German instruments is the alpenhorn, which shepherds originally used to communicate with each other and nearby villages. Members of the Spokane Horn Club have focused on continuing the tradition of these impressive sounding instruments that are also more than 12 feet long. NEW! The Portatos. The only modernized accordion band in the U.S. is comprised of young musicians, most who are under 18. It includes students and instructors from Able to Play Music, the largest accordion studio in the U.S. Performers play everything from polka to disco, from country to movie themes to modern dance. The group began in 2011 and has played throughout the region, including Spokane Interstate Fair and Spokane Fall Folk Festival, and brought home top awards at festivals and competitions in Leavenworth, Kimberley, B.C., and Victoria.

Concordia Choir. The German American Society of Spokane has been showcasing the musical talents of its members and promoting German culture for more than a century. The present ensemble began in 1911, when several similar choirs merged into one non-profit. Today, the Concordia Choir can be heard at the Deutsches Haus, local churches and music festivals.

the First Oktoberfest Oktoberfest has been celebrated in Spokane off and on over the last 100 years, but the original event goes back to the start of the 19th century at a royal wedding in Munich, Germany.

To celebrate the marriage of Prince Ludwig of Bavaria to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen in October 1810, every citizen of Munich was invited to a horse race in a field outside the city gates. The field was renamed Theresienwiese (“Therese’s fields”).

The 5-day event with 40,000 guests was such a hit that it became an annual tradition. More people began attending and other attractions were added, including a carousel and swings in 1818, and huge tents in 1868. The event now begins in late September to take advantage of warmer weather.

Since 1950, the festival’s opening ceremonies have included the Mayor of Munich tapping the first keg and proclaiming “O’zapft is!” (“It’s tapped!”).

Munich’s Oktoberfest, locally called “die Wiesn,” now draws millions of visitors from around the world. Although horse races no longer take place, the festival includes a parade, music, dancing, carnival rides, food and more.

The Oompas and Mas. The internationally renowned ensemble ((they went to Canada once) calls itself “a group of beer loving, sausage burping musicians.” For 45 years the band has gathered in Odessa, Wash., to entertain for the Odessa Deutschesfest the third weekend of September. It started with nine members and now has more than 30, all dedicated to the motto: “Sounding a bit out of tune? HAVE ANOTHER BEER!!”

The AlpenBand. Since 1988, this California-based group has performed everywhere from Puyallup’s Great Northwest Oktoberfest to polka parties in Leavenworth and throughout California. Its repertoire features German folk songs including polkas and waltzes, plus samba, and swing tunes.

Who will be top dog this year? Find out at the dachshund race!

The competition, like the breed, is designed to be a friendly, fun opportunity for these little canines to show stuff their on the track.

Why doxies? The breed hails from Germany, and its name translates to “badger dog,” as dachshunds were originally hunting dogs of small quarry that hides underground.

Race categories are Wiener dogs (ages 9 and under), Senior Wieners (ages 10 and older) and mixed long leg wieners.

THE DOGS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO BE PUREBRED. Race entry is $5, and benefits Dachshund Rescue NW, a regional organization that promotes adoption and training. The group will have representatives at Oktoberfest all weekend to share information about dachshund rescue and adoption.
