Don’t settle for an eyesore. New reclining chairs are as stylish as they are relaxing

Recliners get no respect.Too often, they’re lumped together as the furniture world’s equivalent of sweatpants – comfy but ugly.

But that’s changing.“In the past decade, recliners have become more stylish and sophisticated, so there’s no need to settle for something big and bulky – what you might call a Bubba chair,” says Tom Lias, president of Gorman’s Home Furnishings & Interior Design.

Across Gorman’s five locations in Michigan,“We sell over a dozen brands of recliners that don’t look like recliners, ranging from traditional leather wingbacks to contemporized chairs with sleek silhouettes,” he says.“We have classic, modern and transitional lines, so there’s something for every type of home interior no matter how highly styled.”

Women are largely to thank for the recliner’s makeover, along with the downsizing of homes.“I hear women say all the time,‘My husband wants this awful recliner,’ and I wanted to appease everyone in the household,” says recliner designer Regenia Payne, creative director for upholstery manufacturer Taylor King, which offers a line of recliners with names like Destination and Oasis.

“Houses are also getting smaller, so people want something more streamlined as opposed to a big blob,” Payne says.

Even La-Z-Boy offers sleeker versions alongside its signature puffy recliners.

Higher-end makers with stylish recliners include Bradington-Young, Hancock and Moore, and Motioncraft.

For a recliner that fits in terms of style and space, look for features such as integrated padding (rather than sewn-on cushions) and “zero clearance,” which means that when the chair reclines, the front part moves forward into the room without the back leaning closer to the wall.“Otherwise, it’s important to remember to leave a large enough footprint for the chair to fully recline,” says Canadian interior designer Joanne Jakab, based in Burlington, Ontario.

Look for sleeker arms instead of overstuffed arm rolls.

And,“There should be no obvious hand crank on the side of the chair,” Payne says.

Some recliners fold out in response to a person’s movements, while others have hidden release buttons.

To avoid a boxy look, opt for visible legs to “put some distance between the bottom of the recliner and the floor,” Payne suggests.

“It gives the impression of a stationary chair.”

Select upholstery that can withstand friction caused by opening and closing the

footboard, as well as wear and tear caused by shoes. Lias recommends leather for its durability. Payne also prefers leather because it makes for sleeker tailoring.

Trim such as contrast welt or nail heads “really amps up the style,” Payne says. Just avoiding putting fancy trim on the footrest.

Finally, choose a color that goes with the recliner’s styling as opposed to the stereotypical beige. Jakab just specified a recliner

in apple-red leather “at the request of the lady of the house,” and there are countless other options to add a punch of color.

“Even if you need neutral colors,” Payne says,“rich chocolate and java browns make much more of a statement than tan or beige.” © CTW Features

Mattress recycling programs benefit the environment, consumers and their communities

In September, California joined Connecticut and Rhode Island in passing legislation to create a mattress recycling program. “We believe it’s beneficial for everybody,” says Christopher Hudgins, vice president of government relations and policy at International Sleep Products Association. “For the industry, it helps address a concern with our products that state governments, consumers and others have brought to us. For consumers, it gives them an outlet to properly recycle [mattresses] when they’re done with them. For municipalities, it gives them a way to deal with waste management.”

mattresses take up valuable space in landfills, but they’re also a culprit of landfill fires and their metal springs can destroy machinery.

Plus, just about every part of a mattress can be recycled.

At Spring Back Recycling, which has locations in Tennessee, Colorado and Washington state, mattresses are manually sliced open with box cutters. The contents of the mattress — including cotton, foam, metal and wood — are then bailed and recycled.

“Most of our foam is repurposed into that funny gray under-carpet layer,” says Michael Kattman, director at Spring Back Recycling.

The wood is collected by the local parks department and chipped into mulch.

“One day in the not too distant future, mattresses will be like other solid waste materials like tires and batteries,” Kattman says. “There will be an understood norm for disposing of them responsibly.”

Why Use®a REALTOR ?

I opened this newspaper last weekend to read this headline: “You, too, can sell your home without an agent.” Of course, you can.

There are some very good reasons, however, why you should not.

Canadian physician Sir William Osler said, “A physician who treats himself has a fool for a patient.” If you needed a $200,000 surgery, would you hire a surgeon? Of course, you would. If you had a $200,000 tax problem, would you hire an accountant? Of course, you would. If you had a $200,000 legal problem, would you hire an attorney? Of course, you would.

If you want to buy/sell a $200,000 home, would you hire a REALTOR®? Of course, you should!

Real estate transactions are among the biggest financial investments most people experience in their lifetime. Considering the small upside cost and the large downside risk, it would be foolish to consider a deal in real estate without the professional assistance of a REALTOR®.

All real estate licensees are not the same.

If you’re still not convinced of the value of a REALTOR®, here are a few reasons to use one, as a buyer: Your REALTOR® can help you determine your buying power -- that is, your financial reserves plus your borrowing capacity. If you give a REALTOR® some basic information about your available savings, income and current debt, he or she can refer you to lenders best qualified to help you. Most lenders -- banks and mortgage companies -- offer limited choices.

Your REALTOR® can help you negotiate. There are myriad negotiating factors, including but not limited to price, financing, terms, date of possession and often the inclusion or exclusion of repairs and furnishings or equipment. The purchase agreement should provide a period of time for you to complete appropriate inspections and investigations of the property before you are bound to complete the purchase. Your agent can advise you as to which investigations and inspections are recommended or required.

Your REALTOR® provides due diligence during the evaluation of the property.

Depending on the area and property, this could include inspections for termites, dry rot, asbestos, faulty structure, roof condition,

septic tank and well tests, just to name a few.

Your REALTOR® can assist you in finding qualified responsible professionals to do most of these investigations and provide you with written reports. You will also want to see a preliminary report on the title of the property.

Title indicates ownership of property and can be mired in confusing status of past owners or rights of access. The title to most properties will have some limitations; for example, easements (access rights) for utilities. Your REALTOR®, title company or attorney can help you resolve issues that might cause problems at a later date.

As a seller, you’ll be interested to know that a NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® study show that 82% of real estate sales are the result of agent contacts through previous clients, referrals, friends, family and personal contacts. When a property is marketed with the help of your REALTOR®, you do not have to allow strangers into your home. Your REALTOR® will generally prescreen and accompany qualified prospects through your property.
