Interactive Median Home Price Map By Marianne Guenther Bornhoft, 2013 President Spokane Association of REALTORS®
I’ve been playing with a new interactive median home price map. It’s what a REALTOR® does in a few spare minutes. The map is a new offering from the National Association of REALTORS® that you can try out right now yourself – just search for “interactive median home price map” and you’ll see it on your screen. Here’s what I learned from clicking on a few dots on the map in Washington state: • The median home price in Spokane is $174,800, up four percent so far this year. • The median home price in Kennewick is $186,400, up 2.8 percent so far this year. • The median home price in Yakima is $161,000, down 4.1 percent so far this year. • The median home price in Seattle is $347,400, up 13.2 percent so far this year. [These numbers are based on quarterly sales and may differ slightly from the median price reported by the Spokane Association of REALTORS® Multiple Listing Service]. This map tells me I am glad I live in Spokane where housing is affordable and appreciating at a good rate. A median home in our city, at the current cost of money of 4.5 percent, would cost you about $800 per month on a 30 year fixed mortgage. A median home on the west side would cost you twice that, about $1,600 per month. After the summer we had here in the Inland Northwest, this year, I think we live up to our slogan: near nature, near perfect. The views and recreational opportunities we enjoy here are unmatched in the country for availability and accessibility. Outdoor magazine recently confirmed that. While we may have a rush moment through the city in the morning,
it’s nothing like the crippling, mind-numbing gridlock that is near constant in large cities today. Our cultural opportunities here, too, offer something for everyone – including easy parking, short walks and numerous choices for before and after event conviviality with friends. If it sounds like I’m bullish on Spokane it’s because I most certainly am! This week, I welcomed my industry colleagues to Spokane as Washington REALTORS® held its Fall Business Conference here. Invariably, REALTORS® will talk about real estate and the properties we represent for our clients. Year after year, I wouldn’t trade places with any of my peers – I am very happy right here in Spokane, thank you very much. The Spokane Association of REALTORS® just completed its annual food drive with Albertsons Food & Drug which collects about 30,000 pounds of food for 2nd Harvest Inland Northwest. REALTORS® also donate hundreds of hours every month to keep the Children’s Clubhouse at Sacred Heart Hospital open to families which need a place to play when a member is sick. In the big picture, real estate is not about property, it’s about people. That’s what attracted me to the profession 25 years ago what holds me to it still today. I love working with people and helping them find a place to call home – especially when we have such a great place here in the Intermountain West. Glad to call Spokane home? You bet! All the organization products in the world won’t keep a closet tidy if it’s packed full of never-worn clothing.“Closets tend to be a reflection of who we were and who we want to be,” says Jill Pollack, organization expert and host of “Consumed” on HGTV Canada.“But instead of storing past, present and future clothes in there, you just need the present.”
Many closets suffer from being too small, but the tiniest of them can be improved by using normally ignored spaces. Hang an adjustable closet rod below the main rod and you’ll double the hanging room. If you put blouses and shirts on the top rod and skirts and pants on the bottom, deciding what to wear will seem a whole lot easier. Also, don’t forget about the back of the closet door. Over-the-door shoe racks add plenty of storage and can be used for smaller accessories, not just shoes.
To do that, be honest about your lifestyle.“If you no longer work in an office because you’re a stay-at-home parent, donate old work outfits to a charity,” Pollack says. The same thing goes for fit.“If you try on a pair of jeans and they don’t button, put those in the donation pile as well,” she says.“By the time you get back down to that size, those jeans likely won’t be in style anyway.”

At the end of the day, a closet can only hold so much clothing. Edit out items rarely worn and store them in a spare bedroom or in the corner of a home office. Try using a stand-alone garment rack, like Target’s Threshold bamboo garment rack ($36).
Moving forward, Pollack suggests that if you put on a piece of clothing and take it off because you don’t like how it looks, immediately add it to a donation pile instead of putting it back in your closet.“If you aren’t sure whether something should go or not, hang it up on a backwards hanger and don’t turn it around until you wear it,” Pollack says.“If a year goes by and the hanger is still facing the wrong way, know that you can get rid of that item without fear of regret.” — Alice Oglethorpe
