In college football’s game of musical chairs, the big loser is probably Connecticut.

Or, in the expanded game, toss in Boise State, Cincinnati, Central Florida and maybe Brigham Young.

After years of pillaging, plundering and back-stabbing – some of it during the season! – one of college football’s most distasteful chapters is happily ending.

Conference realignment, which dirtied up an entire decade starting with the Atlantic Coast Conference raiding the Big East of Miami, Virginia Tech and Boston College, is finally setting in wet cement.

The irony: It took the league that started it to stop it.

The ACC, which somewhat recklessly set off the dominoes when it frontally attacked the Big East, found itself vulnerable after it completed its redesign by adding Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Louisville.

The Big Ten countered by stealing Maryland from the ACC with maybe a thought of going after Georgia Tech. The Big 12, decimated by what the ACC started, might have had a retribution eye on Florida State and/or Clemson.

Last year, though, the ACC effectively stopped this nonsense by getting its members to consent to a “grant of rights” agreement. This means any school that leaves the ACC between now and 2026-27 must surrender all its television rights back to the league.

That is simply not ... going ... to ... happen.

Call this positive news the calm in a summer of storms.

There was a heavy price to pay for some, but the final contortions are almost complete.

The divide between the 65 schools in the Power Five conferences (plus Notre Dame) and everyone else, which existed before even if some didn’t want to believe it, has now been officially ratified.

The NCAA’s recent vote to cede the wealthy football leagues autonomy basically codified the divisional lines.

If you didn’t find a home before the music stopped, you got left behind.

How shakedown shook out G The ACC finally completes its alignment box set by adding Louisville this year. The Cardinals bailed just in time as the Big East dismantled and reformed as a lesser union called the American Athletic Conference. Louisville joins Pittsburgh and Syracuse, which left the Big East last year.

The ACC is set with its 14-school alignment, championship game and protected place in the new College Football Playoff.

G The Big Ten’s gurgling stops after adding Maryland from the ACC and Rutgers from the former Big East. The Big Ten now has 14 schools, divided into East and West divisions, a huge branding improvement from the fiasco of “Leaders” and “Legends” divisions.

Maryland and Rutgers join the more difficult East division, which includes Michigan State, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State.

This is not Tom Harmon’s Big Ten. Michigan’s home schedule this year “features” Appalachian State, Miami (Ohio), Utah, Minnesota, Penn State, Indiana and Maryland, with Rutgers on the road.

The question is whether any football game at the Big House this year tops the 109,318 who attended an August soccer exhibition featuring Manchester United and Real Madrid.

College football is a modern monument to more.

More commitment. More resources. More time. More television. More money. More demands. More divisiveness.

Elsewhere in these pages, you’ll read of the no-break schedules of the contemporary player and the changes that have accrued on coaching staffs over the years. Off-season conditioning, expanded recruiting calendars, retina-ruining video study – those are just JOHN part of a trickle-down BLANCHETTE obsessiveness in the college football culture born both from the competitive gene innate in all the game’s principals and ever-skyrocketing financial stakes.

Simply, it’s all about more.

Which begs the question: with so much more being demanded, is the game more . . . better?

“No,” insisted Jim Walden. “It really isn’t.”

OK, you don’t reach out to the neighborhood contrarian to talk you out of a pet antithesis. We pretty much knew Walden would have some strong feelings on the subject of the evolution of the game.

Remember, he may have resigned as coach at Washington State long ago, but he got fired as the radio color guy.

Still, it’s not as if he’s in lockstep with all of us throwing darts at college football these days. Take, for instance, the insanity – or obscenity, if you prefer – of coaching salaries.

“I love the fact that they’re making money,” he said. “It’s the American way.”

That doesn’t mean he necessarily thinks anyone – school, fan or player – is getting bang for the buck.

“Coaches are getting paid a lot more to do less – video has made it so much easier,” he said. “And the operations guys and staff positions have multiplied like crazy.

“But players are getting the same to do a hell of a lot more.”

Mostly, he just doesn’t see that the game itself is inherently more appealing than it was when he coached at WSU nearly 30 years ago.

This is eye-of-the-beholder stuff, sure.

Since the end of unlimited scholarships in 1972, per-game scoring has increased by nearly 20 points. Quarterbacks who don’t complete two out of every three throws find themselves on the bench, when 50 percent used to elicit huzzahs. The players are bigger, faster, more explosive – as they’re better trained, better fed and better doctored.

“They have to be,” Walden said, “given the time they’re expected to put in now. But it’s not like the same people aren’t getting the same athletes.”

Hard to argue. The teams atop the preseason AP poll: Florida State, Alabama, Oregon, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Auburn and UCLA. Other than the nouveau riche Ducks, how does that look any different from the rankings of 20, 30 and 40 years ago?

“Washington State has one quarterback,” Walden noted. “If he goes down, good luck winning another game.”

And major college attendance hasn’t changed significantly since 30-odd programs were lopped off into what is now the FCS in the ’80s. No, stadium capacities aren’t going to allow for huge jumps, but the numbers confirm the game was already more than popular.

Turning players into year-round subjects was never going to goose the excitement – any more than calling that commitment voluntary makes it optional.

“When you talk to some of these parents,” Walden said, “they find out that they send their kids to college when they’re 18 years old and they go into a dark hole and don’t come out. It’s, ‘Whatever happened to my son? He didn’t come back for five years.’

“Money isn’t the only reason kids leave early to go to the NFL. If you make a pro team, you get some time off.”

It was comical to hear earnest testimony from fretful educrats in the recent O’Bannon trial warning that letting players earn on their abilities and likenesses would inevitably lessen college athletics’ fan appeal as a purely amateur endeavor, seeing as they’ve done nothing but enable coaches to ratchet up the demands on their athletes’ time. Meanwhile, they’ve erected football operations facilities that humble some NFL buildings, and in the process managed to further sequester their student-athletes from mere students.

“There’s an appeasement factor now, and maybe it’s to keep these kids from rebelling,” Walden said. “You go into these factories and there are all these amenities – the wide-open cafeteria and the rest. And when they get out, guess what? They have to stand in line with everyone else and pay for that.

“How many ways can we find to keep them from intermingling with the student body? It’s not normal, and it’s not healthy.”

None of this will mute the volume on Saturday afternoons – or Tuesday, Thursday or Friday evenings, depending on your local listings. At least not in those elite precincts that are home to schools in one of the five major conferences who have been granted significant autonomy from the NCAA. They’ll be a quasi-pro operation in due time, and it would be nice to think that the schools left behind could return to playing college football.

Or something less than the current game of more.

campus during the off-season, fine-tuning their muscles and their timing along with their teammates.

During the playing season, players often gather for meetings and film sessions that are voluntary in name only; miss them and you not only risk being ostracized by your teammates, but falling a step behind them as well.

The same goes for practices: a 2-hour session often begins half an hour earlier, and many players stay late – “voluntarily.”

Game days count for three hours, even though football players, for example, arrive up to three hours

before the contest begins and routinely spend a total of 7 hours by the time they leave for home.

It all adds up to an average of 40 to 50 hours a week, the National Labor Relations Board Region 13 found in issuing a ruling last March granting Northwestern University football players the right to unionize.

The decision is considered a major blow to the NCAA’s amateurism rules, and may lead to changes in college athletics, but that could be years away.

In the meantime, the NCAA is sticking to its 20-hour rule, and forcing its athletes to break it.

There are days when Dylan Zylstra asks himself, “Wouldn’t it be awesome to just go to class?”

Just class, nothing else. No endless sessions in the film room, no lifting heavy plates in the weight room and the dining room. No getting knocked on his butt at practice.

And definitely no bear crawls in an overheated gym room at 11 p.m. – in February.

In other words, no football.

No way.

“As painful and miserable as it can get sometimes, the feeling of running through the tunnel on Saturday gets you through almost anything,” said Zylstra, a senior defensive lineman at Eastern Washington.

And when the cheering ends?

“Pretty soon, I’m going to be looking for a job, and I think I’m going to have an edge because I know to work hard,” Zylstra said.

And smart. Somehow, for going on five years, the 22-year-old Zylstra has balanced a 40-hour-a-week football season with a full class load, a girlfriend, a social life and a black lab named Asher who loves to go pheasant hunting.

Besides a bachelor’s degree in business management, Zylstra will have earned an unofficial master’s in time management, all thanks to football.

Says Zylstra: “I have no idea for what’s going to come after this, and I may not be the most talented or the best qualified, but I’m always going to work my hardest.”

A season without end One of the biggest misconceptions about the college football season is that it has a beginning and an end.

Barely two weeks after the Eagles lost their FCS semifinal playoff game last Dec. 21, they were back in the weight room – two hours a day, four days a week.

The goal is simple: “Getting as big as you can,” said Zylstra, who understands the concept as well as anyone. He was a 205-pound linebacker at Kentridge High School who was recruited in 2010

by Montana State and Air Force, but only Eastern offered to let him move to the line.

embraced the idea of packing on muscle as part of a diet-and-exercise regimen.

“It’s hard to get started, but once you start buying into what the trainers are doing, the weight will come on,” Zylstra said.

Zylstra was up to 225 by the fall of 2011, when he saw limited action on the line; now he’s at 285 – a bit light for a Division I lineman, but he makes up for it in speed and ranginess.

“I could be a 300-pounder, but I don’t think I’d play the way I was meant to play,” Zylstra said. Or negotiate the winter conditioning drills on Tuesday and Thursday nights in Reese Court.

“That’s when you find your identity as a young guy,” Zylsta said. “We call it ‘night ball,’ the coaches are in the mat room with the heat cranked up and you’re doing bear crawls at 11 o’clock at night – in January and February.”

The next morning, Zylstra and his teammates drag themselves to class.

After a week off in late March between winter and spring term, it’s time for spring ball.

“Which really is just fall camp in the spring, with not quite as many practices, but we’re still meeting every day and scrimmaging on Saturdays,” Zylstra said.

Many football players try to take heavier loads in the off season, but it’s still a challenge. “My mother says I’m an overachiever on the field and an

underachiever in the classroom,” said Zylstra, who early in his career endured some quarters with a GPA “in the 2s,” but has put up 3.7s the last two quarters.

Spring ball gives way at the end of April to voluntary off-season conditioning, which for most players extends into the summer.

“I call it voluntary-involuntary,” said Zylstra, who went home to Kent after his first year in the summer of 2011, “when I wasn’t sure about football.”

Since then, he’s attacked summer conditioning with a vengeance, three to four hours a day, with the rest of the time spent at the lake, relaxing.

More than a game They call it fall camp, but this year it began earlier than ever for the Eagles: July 31, which followed on the heels of summer conditioning.

Six of the 15 practices are two-a-days, starting at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and lasting two hours each.

That’s the idea, anyway, but on a typical morning, many players arrive at 8:30 and don’t leave until 11:15. “Being early and staying late, that’s the culture here,” Zylstra said. “If you’re not going above and beyond, you’re going to get passed up.”

This year, as a senior, Zylsta is going above and beyond by being a mentor to the freshmen defensive linemen. They

know he’s a preseason all-Big Sky Conference selection, and they’re eager for tips.

Besides, he remembers camp in 2010, when he redshirted but was named the defensive scout team player of the year.

“I have to show the young guys – that’s the circle of D-line life,” Zylstra said.

Once the season begins, the players’ routine is set. It begins with a four-hour session on Sunday, the day after a game.

The entire team gathers, first all together with head coach Beau Baldwin setting the tone, before the units gather to watch film of the previous game.

Every player is graded on every play – “plus or minus, either you did your job or you didn’t – it’s pretty brutal,” Zylstra said.

At Eastern, Monday is always an off day. Zylstra shares a house with offensive lineman Clay DeBord and linebacker Miquiyah Zamora. Every chance he gets, Zylstra goes pheasant hunting or spends time with his girlfriend, Ariana.

This year, Mondays will be more crowded: Zylstra will take a night class.

For almost every player, Tuesday is hump day. Team meetings start early in the afternoon, followed by a two-hour practice that begins at 4.

“We call that our work day,” Zylstra said. “It’s a lot of popping and a lot of grinding, but what gets me through is the next game.”

On Wednesdays, the Eagles do all of the above – although practice includes less hitting – then lift weights.

“Sometimes you don’t get done till 8 or 8:30, and then you don’t want to do anything,” Zylstra said.

By Thursdays, Zylstra can see the light at the end of the tunnel; there’s another unit meeting, but practice is mainly devoted to scouting the upcoming opponent. In other words, working the brain harder than the body.

“You get dialed into your reads, watch the other teams’ tendencies and master your technique,” said Zylstra, who spends hours watching film of the opposing offensive line.

Fridays are light, with a team walkthrough on the field, whether it’s home or on the road and “let off a little steam.”

And then it’s game day, the higher purpose that makes everything else worthwhile.

Stanfield had his wife drop off cold pizza one day after he forgot to pack his lunch. As he ate, he took a phone call from a lineman recruit from California who was wavering. The news was good.

“I’m glad you won’t be on the sideline of La Verne when we kick their butts,” Stanfield said between bites.

Stanfield previously coached at Timberline High School in Boise (2008-09) and learned to organize practices after visiting Boise State.

“I studied their organization and how they moved around so seamlessly,” Stanfield said. “That takes a lot of time and planning.”

One of the keys, especially during a three-hour practice, is to break it down to 10- or 15-minute intervals.

“If you are in an hour, or two-hour, teaching block, you’d never have kids do anything more than 15 minutes of one thing without them getting up and changing gears mentally,” he said. “It keeps their attention better.”

Passion more than reward For every multimillion dollar contract for a high-profile Division I coach, there are thousands like Stanfield who labor hours for passion rather than payoff.

While he didn’t say how much Whitworth pays him, Stanfield said he took a $15,000 annual pay cut from his days as a history teacher and head coach at Shadle.

“You don’t want to ever figure out what we get paid hourly. That would be no fun,” Stanfield said. “But when you are a high school coach, you know you are not doing it for the money.”

Asked why he pursued the change, Stanfield said: “To become a fulltime coach. Once the school year starts, I’m spending my time on football and not teaching history six periods of day. I’m working more hours, but it’s all going the same direction.”

Sandberg likes his defensive line, which is anchored by defensive end junior Danny Welstad. The team lost stalwart defensive lineman Kyle Davidson to graduation but is returning nose guard Brodrick Hirai, who missed most of last year to injury.

At the other defensive end, junior Aaron Powe, sophomore Daniel Portillo and transfer junior Nick Spagnola will compete for snaps.

At linebacker, the Pirates return both Grant Livingston, a junior from Spokane who led all returning players with 43 tackles last year, and senior Nic Brockhoff who had 32.

Also in the mix at linebacker will be converted defensive ends Carlos Moiza and Michael Plueard. They join fellow returning linebackers Justin Maxwell, a junior from Spanaway, and sophomores Dalin McDonnell and Neil Wagner.

Like father, like son TIRELESS WORK ETHIC REMAINS THE PETRINO WAY

MOSCOW, Idaho – Their job was to stay at the bus station and wait.

Paul and Bobby Petrino, with a $1.25 from their dad in their pockets, would park themselves at the pinball machines and keep an eye out for the right bus.

They didn’t mind the work.

This was in Helena, Montana, in the 1970s, when pinball cost 10 cents and college football coaches like Bob Petrino Sr. at Carroll College had to wait for

16-millimeter game film of their opponents to arrive before they could make cut-ups.

Petrino Sr. wanted to get his hands on the tape as soon as he could. So he enlisted his sons – future quarterbacks for him at Carroll – and ordered them to call right when the film arrived.

Paul Petrino, now 47 and the coach at Idaho, smiled as he recalled those bus station visits with his older brother and how different the coaching profession looks today than it did when he helped his father as a boy.

Technology advances have opened up opportunities for more film study. Time away in the offseason is shorter because of new NCAA rules. Recruiting is a 12-month endeavor.

All things considered, the job is more consuming.

“Used to be in the old days you went home for four weeks or went wherever and came back,” Petrino said. “But now you’re here the whole year, year-around.

It’s a great thing – college football’s the most popular sport there is, so it’s awesome.”

Petrino Sr. drove a taxi in the summer to help provide for his family, in addition to serving as Carroll College’s athletic director and only full-time football coach for part of his successful 28-year tenure.

Now Paul and Bobby, the coach at Louisville, spend their summers recruiting and monitoring players’ offseason conditioning.

The really long hours, though, start in August. With the Vandals preparing for their Aug. 30 season opener at Florida, Petrino and his staff are often in their offices until midnight after arriving at 7 or 7:30 a.m.

Chris Petersen’s debut Chris Petersen became one of the most highly-regarded coaches in college football at Boise State by beating up on lesser opponents and occasionally knocking off a giant.

After years of rejecting would-be suitors, Petersen finally will show how he handles a bigger budget and tough competition every week. He takes the reins of a program that appeared to finally break through last season, winning nine games after three consecutive 7-6 seasons under current USC coach Steve Sarkisian.

Petersen instituted a hardline

approach, dismissing defensive back Patrick Enewally after an apparent altercation with a teammate. He also suspended quarterback Cyler Miles and receiver Damore’ea Stringfellow after the two were accused of assaulting Seahawks fans following the Super Bowl. Only Stringfellow was charged with a crime, and he eventually transferred to Mississippi.

Petersen inherits a talented team and expectations are high. The Huskies are ranked in the AP poll (No. 25) for the first time since 2003.

in career completion percentage, passing efficiency and touchdown passes. Whoever does it won’t have Mackey Award-winning tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins as a safety valve; the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers picked him up in the draft’s second round.

At running back and tight end, Petersen appears to be taking a “by committee” approach. Dwayne Washington and redshirt freshman Lavon Coleman likely will see the most reps.

Both quarterbacks are mobile, and while Lindquist supposedly has the stronger arm of the two, Williams has been more accurate on deep passes in practice.

Lindquist is bigger and takes better care of the football, while decision making has been an issue for Williams.

Miles won the backup job last season and appeared in eight games, starting one at Oregon State.

Whoever wins the starting job will have considerable time to ease into it.

The UW’s first four games are all of the creampuff variety. Even without knowing who the starter is, the Huskies are favored by 16 points against UH. The next three games against Eastern Washington, Illinois and Georgia State should all be easy wins.

A conference home at last The Idaho Vandals were FBS vagabonds last season, playing a 12-game independent schedule that was heavy on money games (Florida State, Ole Miss, Washington State) and far-flung trips.

This year, Idaho’s travel is still intense – but at least they have a conference home in the NCAA’s top division.

UI rejoined the Sun Belt Conference as a football-only member on July 1. It was part of the SBC from 2001 to 2004 before jumping to the Western Athletic Conference (which folded as a football conference after the 2012 season).

The Sun Belt doesn’t provide Idaho with any geographic ties – the closest team is New Mexico State, another new member – but coach Paul Petrino sees plenty of other benefits.

“It’s big in recruiting, it’s big in having a chance to play for a ring, having a chance to win a league,” he said. “It’s big money-wise, because now you get money from the league so now you don’t have to play as many money games.”

The QB shuffle Since Nathan Enderle graduated after the 2010 season, seven quarterbacks have started for Idaho. None has developed into the clear, long-term answer at the game’s most important position – at least not yet in the case of Chad Chalich.

In 2011, it was Brian Reader and Taylor Davis.

Dominique Blackman, Logan Bushnell and Davis started games in 2012. And last season, Chalich, Davis and Josh McCain split time through injuries.

Chalich is the only one who remains on the Vandals’ roster as a QB, and he’s locked in a tight battle with redshirt freshman Matt Linehan – son of former Idaho QB Scott Linehan.

Petrino said before camp that he’s fine playing both signal-callers against Florida to the start the season. Through the first two scrimmages, Linehan has put up bigger (and slightly better) numbers than Chalich. He’s also been more inclined to go through his progressions and find an open receiver instead of attempting to run.

Unknowns at defensive back The biggest question for the Idaho defense – indeed one of the biggest questions for the team – is in the defensive backfield.

The Vandals allowed 40 passing touchdowns last year, eight more than any other FBS team.

They were especially susceptible to the deep ball – 17 of opposing teams’ TDs through the air went for at least 30 yards.

To shore things up, the Vandals brought in 6-foot-2, 217-pound safety Chris Edwards, a JC transfer who brings size and physicality to the UI secondary. He’ll be joined at safety by sophomore Jordan Grabski and emerging sophomore Russell Siavii.

UI has more depth at defensive back, which should allow it to play more nickel and dime packages. In camp, versatile senior Bradley Njoku has lined up at cornerback, safety and nickelback on the inside.

Putting five or six DBs on the field is a necessity, defensive coordinator Ronnie Lee said, because of the league’s spread offenses.

“A lot of the teams in our league now are going to one back and four wideouts or no

Practice and game “tape” is now all digital, and it’s available in quantities that coaches from another era could scarcely imagine.

“They didn’t video practice back in the day and we video practice and stay till midnight getting it graded and making corrections and stuff,” Idaho offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Kris Cinkovich said. “So that part has made it more time-intensive.

“I’d like to think it’s made it for the better. I think football’s popular for a reason.”

Petrino, a self-described football junkie, analyzes as much practice or game film as he can partly because he knows opposing coaches are obsessing over it too. He and Bobby used to spend parts of their offseason examining two or three NFL offenses at a time.

Their eye for detail and precision on the football field came early, when they started charting tackles, breaking down tape and announcing defensive coverages – anything they could do – for their dad.

Petrino Sr. said from his home in Helena. “They wanted to be coaches from Day One, although their dad tried to talk them out of it.”

Paul’s devotion to his craft hasn’t gone unnoticed. Cinkovich said the bar has been set that “nobody’s going to work harder than the head coach, and that’s always a good thing because that means everybody has to rise to it.”

That goes for the players, too.

“I believe so because we know that the coaching staff is here until probably 1 or 2 o’clock in the morning watching film and trying to get it ready for us,” senior defensive end Quinton Bradley said. “We try to do as much extra we can in the time frames of our schedule.

In fall camp, everything’s tight. So if we can get some extra film or an extra little workout or an extra ice bath, it’s all for good.”

Idaho is still undersized at cornerback. Likely starters Jayshawn Jordan and Delency Parham are 5-9 and 5-11, respectively. The team’s tallest corner, 6-2 Desmond Banks, is expected to redshirt after offseason shoulder surgery.

Stocked defensive line Before Dezmon Epps was dismissed and Kenny Torrence, a JC signee, didn’t make it to Moscow, wide receiver figured to be Idaho’s strongest position. But now that mantle probably belongs to the defensive line.

With the mid-camp arrival of prized recruit Alfonso Hampton – a space-eating 346-pound nose tackle – the Vandals have four interior defensive linemen with skill and size. And they have depth on the edge, with Maxx Forde, Quinton Bradley, Marius Burgsmueller, Anthony Rice and Zach Cable.

The more Hampton, Quayshawne Buckley and others inside can make a push, the more effective the Vandals’ pass rushers will be – and the more room Idaho’s linebackers, led by Irving Steele and Marc Millan, will have to run free and make tackles.

“If a guy like Alfonso can push the two guards up the field, then the quarterback has no chance,” Bradley said. “We’re all speed rushers, so us getting up the field and the quarterback already having to back up, he’s going to get hurt.”

Players and coaches are together 10 months out of the year, or potentially longer for teams that reach a bowl game. The only breaks for players come after the season and after the school year when spring camp wraps up.

The winter weightlifting and summer workouts can be draining. But only to a point.

“It’s a strain, but if you love football, you’ll get through it,” Bradley said.

“Because we all want to excel in this.

We all want to do good, do great. So the more we can learn, the more we can put in our brain about football, the better.

But I’m not gonna lie – it is a lot of football.”

Regardless of the time he spends in his second-floor office in the Kibbie Dome, Petrino will never consider himself a harder worker than his father.

As a small-school coach at Carroll College, Petrino Sr. met regularly with the offense and the defense. He coached pretty much every position. For seven or eight years, he was also AD and building coordinator.

Just as Idaho players and coaches take notice of Petrino’s work ethic, he took notice of the time his father put into coaching and making ends meet.

“That’s how you know,” he said.

“That’s hopefully how you’re raised, so you know that’s how you get somewhere by working hard.”

No matter how the job changes.
