Leslie is a longtime food and wine writer who started her newspaper career at The Spokesman-Review in the 1990s. A few chefs are still cursing her reviews. In 2019, she and her husband, John Nelson, have been traveling the country in a somewhat cantankerous motor home, chronicling their adventures in Going Mobile, which appears in print and online weekly. They are passionate about the outdoors and love to travel. Their goal is to visit beautiful places as much as possible, exploring camping with style. John is a regular contributor to The Seattle Times, The Spokesman-Review, Los Angeles Times and 1889 Magazine. “Dancing teaches great body awareness by bringing the right and left parts of the brain together,” she said.

Follow My Lead studios in Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls provide instruction in styles like tango, swing, and ballroom, along with acting and self-defense. Reiber said dancing has been shown to combat depression and Alzheimer’s disease.

“Mentally, dancing is huge, plus it’s a great way to meet people and make friends,” she said.

Follow My Lead will have a booth as well as offer waltz lessons. Reiber and others from the studios will share how dancing has helped their lives. Guests can find a supportive environment at Follow My Lead, including private lessons and social events that encourage seniors to be more social and active. There’s a community dance the fourth Sunday of each month, plus a class and social Wednesday evenings. There are group dances for many styles, plus line dancing on Wednesdays and Fridays, country swing socials, Tango Tuesdays, and potlucks. Couples can also enjoy romantic date nights with a one-hour private lesson and appetizers and wine.

Reiber and other volunteers also enjoy hosting dances at area senior centers, where residents can dance, watch, or enjoy the music.

Pickleball has become one of the most popular activities around, and now there’s a new resource for Spokane-area residents to join in the fun: The Press Pickleball Club.

Since February, the location at 1000 W Sprague Avenue in downtown Spokane has been a perfect place to play and learn, no matter your skill level. The club provides six courts, a pro shop, locker rooms, and other services including league play, tournaments, and other resources.

The club recently held a two-day clinic especially for newer players, and more are planned later this year. There’s also a beginner league, and more leagues in the works.

Active Living guests will have the chance to learn all about The Press Pickleball Club and the appeal of pickleball in general.

John Gavin, commercial asset manager for Cowles Real Estate, said it’s an activity that is easy to get into.

“It’s very social, and a good way to help people find friends,” he said. “Plus, just about anyone can play.”

Experienced players can use a rating system to keep track of their play and reserve court time.

Space at The Press Pickleball Club can even be reserved by businesses for corporate/team events. Catering is available. The location is also next to Dry Fly Distillery, which makes it easy for players to have a drink afterward. To learn more visit

SpokAnimal was founded in 1983 and has become Eastern Washington’s largest and most cost-effectively operated humane society for pet adoptions. In 2022, it found homes for 4,031 animals and, according to its 2021 tax filing, 78% of the organization’s income went directly towards programs that benefit shelter and public pets. Over 60 percent of the shelter’s intake was from ownersurrendered animals and transfers from the local municipal shelter, SCRAPS. The other portion of animals arrives through its vibrant transport program, which allows it to save pets from areas

where overcrowding and euthanizing for space are still unfortunate realities. SpokAnimal’s foster program helps it care for fragile and vulnerable animals. Its vet clinic supports both shelter and public pets with spay/ neuter services, microchips, vaccines and dentals. Ad hoc care for pets, such as wound care, pregnancy complications, and digestive issues, is provided for public pets as staffing and finances allow. The Guardian Angel emergency boarding service and Pet Food Bank are other programs that support the local community. To further enhance animal welfare in the community, partnerships

with organizations such as Catholic Charities of Eastern Washington, Sullivan Park Care Center, Spokane

Meals on Wheels, Blessings Under the Bridge, Red Cross, Family Promise and Best Friends are core to SpokAnimal’s outreach. Those interested in supporting this nonprofit’s work can contribute online at www.spokanimal.org.

Visit the SpokAnimal booth to learn all about its services, along the opportunity to meet some pets ready to be adopted!

The booth will also include a very special celebrity: Jimmy from Jimmy’s Clubhouse, an area online pet resource. He’ll be happy to receive pets and highfives 10:30 - noon in the official Kissing Booth.

The Spokane Valley location was also the site for the 2023 expo, and guests and vendors alike were appreciative of everything the venue had to offer. This includes the MAX Restaurant and Lounge which includes an extensive food and beverage menu for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. In addition to the quality food choices, the lounge is proud to include an award-winning selection of wine, beer, cider, and mixed drinks. Many of the beverages are made in the region, including some beers brewed especially for this establishment.

Besides well-appreciated mixed drinks like mimosas and Bloody Marys, MAX also serves its signature lemonade, available in several flavors and in alcohol and non-alcoholic versions. It also enjoys creating community partnerships, such as the “Wine by Cougs” wine list created with support from Washington State University alumni. It also hosts a monthly winemaker event where the staff gets to sample various varietals and vintages to aid their knowledge. The establishment has been recognized by Wine

Spectator for more than a decade due to its strong selection of wines, knowledgeable staff, and strong customer service. It also received the magazine’s Best Award of Excellence in 2020. Get Involved COMMUNITY

The good thing about community is that everyone who takes part in one wins. What they win may vary but is often along the lines of the simple satisfaction of co-existing with others. Yes, there are occasional moments when we want to do our own thing and stay apart from others. Nothing wrong with wanting a little privacy and quiet solo time away from the neighbors so you can recharge your mental and emotional batteries. But true community is being able to connect with people and vice versa.

At Active Living Expo, guests will be presented with all sorts of options to establish or grow their own communities. These could be different ways to interact and learn from each other. How about pickleball? How about dancing? How about travel? How about exploring other volunteer opportunities?

It can be fun to explore different ways to spend time together with others. You don’t have to be part of a big and noisy crowd, unless you like those types of

situations, but you can still find interesting ways to interact.

There also can be a fine line between seeking out fun opportunities and enjoying them with others. Think hiking for instance, which can be done with friends, but also done in small groups or solo.

Enjoy opportunities to define and grow your own communities!

BE THE BEST 50-AND-OVER SELF HEALTH

As we age, we begin to learn more how our bodies work. Or at least work in different ways than they used to. Our health can even become a conversation topic, especially among peers who might be exploring their own health journeys.

Trying to focus on your health first may feel confusing sometimes, especially with so many claims and products on the market for pretty much any symptom or conditions.

It can be tricky knowing who or what to believe where your well-being is concerned, but a good starting place is your primary care provider. Or if they’re not available, other experts can point you in the right direction.

At the Active Living Expo we know that all of our guests have unique health conditions. That’s why a big goal of this annual event is to help people connect with others who can help their health or suggest other wellness solutions.

The entire health care marketplace is certainly challenging: no one will disagree with that. Patients sometimes feel like the go-between from the insurance company and the providers. But there is plenty of advice to be had and answers out there.

PLANNING YOUR JOURNEY OF LEISURE LEISURE

Living a life of leisure doesn’t necessarily mean sitting back and eating bon-bons, no matter how good they are.

If you define leisure as the opposite of work, then leisure can be all sorts of things that you might want to indulge in and play at.

Leisure can be a lovely reward for all

your hard work and accomplishments, even if, as some discover, some people actually do find joy in taking on more work or at least different work.

You can fill your leisure time with all sorts of activities that keep you busy and entertained. Spend the day skiing.

Heck, spend the week skiing! Take a road trip! Pursue a new hobby or get back into a past one that you may

have had to put aside when you were focusing on the daily grind.

Our Active Living Expo is designed to provide plenty of options for those ready to pursue learning about leisure. This can include inspiration for activities to pursue or destinations to explore. It could mean opportunities to volunteer for a charity or maybe even work parttime especially if there’s a focus on

enjoying oneself.

Your idea for leisure can even co-exist with someone else’s. Join a pickleball league or go out for dance lessons. You’ll find others excited about not having to work all the time, and being able to focus on the projects they like.

GET YOUR FINANCES MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION RETIREMENT

Like it or hate it, our current labor system is based on principles of “work hard, then earn your reward of not having to work anymore.”

It’s not a bad approach, in theory. You hustle for X years, and then you get to stop and enjoy everything you’ve worked hard to accomplish.

Of course, the reality is a little different for everyone: some people love the work and don’t want to stop. Some can’t afford to stop. Some try to slow down and then get bored when things

are no longer fast-paced and frantic. What’s clear is that some degree of planning is useful to make those golden years truly golden. This could mean working with a financial planner to make sure you have adequate cash flow to do whatever you want, such as travel, enjoying your hobbies and indulging in family time, rather than worrying about your funds.

It also can mean focusing on your health, since this is also something that could affect what you do in your

later years.

Active Living is proud to provide guests with opportunities to connect with various resources to plan ahead for retirement, whatever form it takes. Do you want to train for and explore another career? Do you want to stop all work entirely and focus on the fun? Do you want to get involved in supporting non-profits or other charities? So many organizations depend on volunteers – they likely will love to learn from you, and you’ll also

have fun using your skills to help a project you’re fond of.

It’s also a good time to look toward next steps – deciding “I’m done with work” can lead to answering “what now?” Figure out strategies to keep your money growing: who knows if you or a family member may need care in the future, or you can include it in your estate.
