Crossovers Fit the Bill Since their introduction in the early 90s, crossovers have skyrocketed in popularity thanks in no small part to their versatility, extreme safety

C

onvenience and comfort are in this season. Crossovers constitute the largest percentage of new car sales, according to a study from JD Power and Associates.

Even individual car dealers have noticed the difference. “Our Subaru Outback sales doubled in the past two years,” says Michael McHale, director of corporate communications at Subaru about one of the brand’s crossovers.

The crossover, or CUV, as it’s sometimes called, is a relatively new presence on the automotive market.

In fact, the car appeared only in the 1990s, according to Sam Butto, senior product communication specialist at Toyota. Toyota’s RAV4 was one of the first Crossovers on the market.

As its name suggests, the crossover is a mix of two other vehicles: the truck-based SUV and the minivan. It’s a spacious, all-wheel drive hatchback, but on a car platform. The unibody platform makes for a smoother ride than the truck, says McHale.

In fact, because the crossover is a high-seating car, it may allow the driver better visibility on the road.

More importantly, the CUV combined the smoother ride with lots of storage space and most of the truck’s four-wheel drive capabilities.

As the car became popular among even urban residents, it became clear that there was little need for the ability to go through any terrain, including streams and boulders for the large number of urban and suburban residents, says Coffman.

Instead, many of them were looking for a car to accommodate their families and carry them over potholes and snow. “The lifestyle of North America in general is very active—being on the go, Coffman says. “Whether it’s camping, biking golfing, it’s easier to throw your and your friend’s gear into a truck that will accommodate everyone.”

Crossovers whose storage space eclipses even other CUVs on the market. The Rogue’s storage compartment is divided into nine parts, allowing one to store a swimming suit at the same time as paper grocery bags.

The CUV market exploded in 2000s as companies jumped aboard – Honda CRV, Subaru Forester and Lexus LX were among the crossovers that sprung up over the years.

By now, the family-oriented CUV has almost completely replaced its predecessor, the station wagon, on the market, partially because it offered cheaper fuel rates. “Between the economic crisis straining people’s purses and the increase in fuel process at that time caused people to make rational choices, and the crossover was a very rational choice,” McHale says.

He says that, while a typical truck runs on 16 or 17MPG, the Outback can get up to 33MPG on a highway.

The crossover is one of the safest cars on the road. “The laws of physics always apply, so if safety is a priority, avoid small cars and choose a vehicle with size and weight to protect you from the crash,� says Russ Rader, senior VP for communications at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). “And the crossover is one of the biggest cars on the road.�

The one crash test it has trouble with is the test most cars fail – the small overlap front crash test. This safety check, instituted by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety only in 2014, involves something colliding with the front left corner of the car. Few cars are protected from such impact, because most anti-crash mechanisms are stored in the middle front of a car, leaving the sides with the lights mostly unprotected.

However, according to the IIHS press release, three out of the nine tested small crossovers did pass the test: the Chevrolet Equinox, the GMC Terrain and the Toyota

Highlander. A later test added the Subaru Forester, Mitsubishi Outlander, Mazda CX-5 and Nissan Rogue to that list.

According to its press release, Highlander employs an automatic braking system that decelerates the car if radar shows it’s likely to crash. This works with the driver who may be applying brakes at the same time. The system also tightens seatbelts and suspensions and says Cindy Knight, public affair specialist for Toyota.

This model’s structure is also reinforced on the front corners with spacers that distribute the impact of the crash instead of taking it all in one spot like many other models, according to an article on Society of Automotive Engineers International website.

The IIHS press release also mentions the additional reinforcement on the GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Equinox.

For example, many modern crossovers also focus on entertainment. Newer models might include Bluetooth, DVD players, Internet music players and even Wi-Fi. Systems like Toyota’s Entune system allow riders to access websites like yelp.com and MovieTickets.com. “It puts your whole life in the car,� Butto says of the five-year old system. “People want more and more information and are spending more and more on their car.�

He recalls the time he and his wife bought movie tickets on the way to the theatre using their car’s Entune system. Others focus on safety. Nissan, for example, includes the Around View Monitor, which uses a series of cameras to allow the driver to more reliably check their blind spots.

ew-car shoppers who, whether for financial or personal reasons, have held onto their current cars for the last seven or even 10 years will discover a brave new world when they finally re-enter a dealer’s showroom.

Features that may have seemed novel or exclusive to the luxury class a decade ago are likely to have become commonplace, even supplanted by a later generation of technology in some cases. As an example, many cars no longer include CD players, instead offering interfaces that play digital music files stored on smartphones or USB drives.

2015 NEW CAR GUIDE To help get shoppers up to speed, here’s a quick review of some of the latest high-tech convenience, connectivity and safety features being offered on a growing number of mainstream models. One caveat, however: Most of these features are optional, and some may only be included on higher-priced trim levels in a given car line and/or bundled with other items in costly optional packages.

Convenience. Those who’ve lived with the same vehicle for several years should be instantly taken by how car interiors have changed over the last decade. Conventional analog gauges and switches have largely given way to configurable LCD displays and touchscreen controls, and voice-activated command capability for audio, climate, navigation and other systems. Several models now offer optional head-up

displays that project vehicle speed and other pertinent information onto the inside of the windshield in the driver’s line of sight to help keep his or her eyes on the road.

fob in his or her pocket. A few models, particularly from Chrysler, Jaguar and Lincoln, are doing away with the transmission shift lever, instead using space-saving dials or buttons to select gears.

Heated seats have become widely available in all vehicle segments with many models also now offering a ventilated function to keep one’s bottom cool in hot weather. As if that’s not comforting enough, many high-end cars – and even a few more affordable rides like the Ford Taurus sedan – offer a massaging function that can make even the most grueling commute downright serene.

Power-operated tailgates are commonly available among most minivans and crossover SUVs, with some cars offering a similar function for the trunk lid. The latest twist on the system, introduced by Ford and now offered on models from other

2015 NEW CAR GUIDE brands, allows those burdened with baggage to engage the available power-operated liftgate or trunk via a simple kicking motion under the rear bumper.

Automatic on-off headlamps have long become a core feature, but the latest such systems take illuminating the road to another level by sensing when another vehicle is approaching on a darkened road and switching off the high beams as both a courtesy and safety measure. More widespread are optional adaptive headlamps that automatically pivot in conjunction with the car’s steering angle to help light the way through curves.

Most vehicles now feature rearview monitors that display a backbumper view of what’s immediately behind it for easier and safer parking; a few new models go a step further with multi-camera systems that can provide a 360-degree view around

the car. Those averse to parking altogether can avail themselves of a system on several models from Ford and other automakers that automatically steer the vehicle into a parallel parking spot. A few such systems also can navigate the car into angled spaces, while the new Lincoln MKC crossover can steer itself out of a parking space, too.

And then there’s one item migrating from the luxury class into many popularly priced models that’s considered the ultimate in decadence among those living in colder climates: a heated steering wheel.

Connectivity. That’s the big buzzword in the car business these days, as automakers attempt to attract a new generation of tech-savvy buyers by integrating smartphone functionality into their vehicles. Most cars offer a simple Bluetooth interface that enables hands-free

command or via preset replies like “driving, can’t text,” or “running late.”

Several models now offer Apple’s CarPlay feature, which enables owners of recent-model iPhones to access Siri, the virtual digital assistant, while driving via a steering wheelmounted button.

Some cars even allow motorists to maintain the bond of connectivity when they’re otherwise separated via smartphone apps that can remotely engage or disengage a car’s door locks, start the car and/or check tire pressure, fuel levels and vehicle diagnostics. Hyundai’s Blue Link system can help parents keep track of teenage drivers by notifying them when the vehicle is driven in excess of a stated speed, leaves a predetermined geographic region or is operated beyond a set curfew.

A few models, including the Dodge Dart sedan and the new Lexus NX crossover offer an inductive-charging tray that enables occupants to keep their smartphones powered without having to plug them in.

Safety. After decades of perfecting the art of protecting a

mitigation systems use the same technology to sound an alert if the car is closing in too quickly on another vehicle or other obstruction and a crash is imminent. Many such systems also can automatically apply the brakes if the driver isn’t reacting quickly enough. The 2015 Audi A8’s system will even keep the brakes engaged after a crash to help prevent a second collision.

The car automatically brakes if the driver fails to react to dangerous situation in time. car’s occupants in a crash, the focus in recent years has been to help drivers avoid getting into collisions altogether. Several models now offer lane-departure warning systems that locate highway lane markings and alert the driver if the vehicle is crossing them inadvertently; similarly, blind-spot warning systems detect and warn of other vehicles in adjacent lanes the driver may not otherwise see in the side mirrors. A few of these systems can gently “nudge” the car back into a lane or prevent crossing the markers via brake or steering intervention.

Adaptive cruise control systems that employ distance sensors to help maintain both a set speed and distance from the traffic ahead are becoming more widely available.

Some even work in stop-and-go highway traffic. Forward collision

recently introduced a self-braking system that works in reverse gear while backing out of a driveway or parking space, while Volvo and Mazda offer low-speed collision avoidance systems that will automatically apply the brakes to avoid hitting other vehicles – and in Volvo’s case, pedestrians and cyclists – in city traffic.

And for those who might otherwise become annoyed by the abundance of audible warnings from any of the above systems, Cadillac takes a subtler approach with its “safety alert seat.” Offered in most of its models, it transmits vibrations on the left, right or both sides of the cushion if, say, the car crosses the lane markers, is coming up too quickly to the traffic ahead or is in close proximity to other cars or obstacles while parking.

utomakers – particularly the domestic brands – would seem to be in a pickle these days regarding their full-size pickup truck lines. With the U.S. economy firmly in

recovery mode, sales of what are typically the most profitable models on a dealer’s lot are soaring, with sticker prices on luxury-minded models easily shattering the $50,000 barrier.

Unfortunately, truck builders aren’t in much of a position to take the money and run. Stricter federal fuel-

economy regulations being phased in over the coming years, peaking at an industry average 54.5 mpg by 2025, should be prompting major design changes among full-size models. The

trick will be to maintain the segment’s loyal core of buyers by boosting mileage without either extreme downsizing or neutering a pickup’s workman-like abilities.

2015 NEW CAR GUIDE To that end, Ford is readying a dramatic redesign of its topselling F-150 pickup later this year as a 2015 model that essentially puts the full-size truck through a major weight reduction program, along with other changes, for the sake of what should be more than just token fuel economy gains. “This is a critical redesign, not just for Ford, but for the entire full-size truck market as we enter an era of rapidly-increasing fuel efďŹ ciency standards,â€? says Karl Brauer, senior analyst at Kelley Blue Book.“Ford needs to establish the F-150 as a future-friendly model that will keep pace with government regulations while still meeting the demands of serious truck buyers.â€?

All else being equal, reducing a vehicle’s weight is the simplest way for auto engineers to boost its mpg. Not only does the engine have to work less strenuously to get the vehicle up to speed, designers can employ smaller and more efďŹ cient powerplants to deliver equally acceptable levels of performance.The 2015 F-150 makes extensive use of lightweight, durable materials to help trim the pickup’s weight by around 700 pounds, which is no small feat. Ninety three percent of the body panels will be fabricated from aluminum, with its traditional ladder-box frame crafted from high-strength steel.

The fuel economy leader in the lineup will be a newly offered 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 engine with an auto stop-stop function – a ďŹ rst among pickups – that automatically powers itself down while at idle to save gas.

A conventional 3.5-liter V6 will remain the standard powerplant,

with the current 3.5-liter turbo-V6 and a 5.0-liter V8 optional. Models equipped with either of the turbo-sixes will also come with so-called active shutters behind the front grille that close once the truck reaches cruising speeds for improved aerodynamics.

SpeciďŹ cs for the redesigned F-150’s engine lineup have yet to be released, but we expect the new 2.7-liter V6 to rival small V8s from other truck makers in terms of horsepower and towing capabilities, with class-leading fuel economy.

Otherwise, the redesigned Ford F-150 will be similar in size compared to the current model.

The updated styling includes a wider stance, exaggerated wheel arches and a bold front face, with chrome and monochromatic sport appearance packages available for customization.

The truck will again be offered in standard, extended SuperCab and four-door Crew Cab models with rear- or four-wheel-drive in XL, XLT, Lariat, Platinum and King Ranch trim levels, with the latter two versions being the most luxurious.

A long list of newly offered features includes several of the latest high-tech safety systems, including both lane departure and blind-spot warning systems.

Inatable rear-seat safety belts will work like small air bags to help prevent chest injuries in a crash.

Other improvements include an available remote-operated tailgate, LED headlamps, taillights and cargo bed illumination, a 360-degree external video monitor for easier parking, integrated rear loading ramps, a new BoxLink cargo-securing system and a panoramic sunroof.

Smaller Trucks Set to Make a Comeback

merica’s love affair with pickups is back on as sales have boomed as the economy has recovered. The Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and the Dodge Ram 1500 represented three of the top five selling vehicles in the U.S. in 2014.

Smaller pickups, which were once popular among younger and more-casual truck buyers, have virtually disappeared from the market. The Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma have been the sole survivors as most buyers either migrated to SUVs or crossovers, or just traded up into full-size pickups

“The compact truck market is screaming for attention,” says Karl Brauer, senior analyst at Kelley Blue Book in Irvine, Calif.

Perhaps coming at an ideal time, General Motors recently unveiled a pair of new midsize models for 2015, the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, that will return to dealers’ showrooms later this year after a prolonged absence from their respective lineups.

Both models share platforms and components, but their styling differences – mostly at the front and rear ends – set apart the two models. The Chevy will carry the brand’s signature split grille and

bowtie emblem, while the GMC version will affect a bolder front-end treatment. Both will be offered in extended cab and four-door crew cab versions with six- and five-foot cargo boxes.

Exclusive to the North American market, both the Colorado and Canyon will come powered in their standard versions by a fuel-efficient 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 193 horsepower for light-duty needs, with a 302-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 alternately available. Both feature the latest engine technology to help maximize both power and fuel efficiency, including variable valve timing, direct fuel injection and jetspray piston cooling. The V6 is predicted to afford an impressive maximum towing capacity of over 6,700 pounds when properly equipped.

Rear-drive will be standard with four-wheel-drive, a locking rear differential and specific off-road equipment optional. A six-speed automatic transmission with a tow/ haul mode will be standard in most versions, with a six-speed manual gearbox alternately offered in base

four-cylinder rear-drive models.

Standard four-wheel disc brakes should afford ample stopping abilities, while a coil-over-type front suspension and electric power steering promise responsive handling; a fairly short turning radius (about 41 feet) will likely make the truck far easier to park in tight urban areas than their full-size counterparts.

Inside, both models will treat occupants to nicely designed interiors that feature bold, upright instrument panels with large and legible instrumentation, assorted storage cubbies and bins and car-like floor-mounted center console shifters. Along with six standard airbags to protect occupants, the trucks will be the first in their segment to offer forward-collision and lane-departure warning systems to help drivers avoid getting into crashes.

No word as yet on cost, but given that General Motors’ full size trucks start at around $25,000, the coming midsize Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon should feature base prices below the $20,000 mark when they debut this fall.

ith the economy running more smoothly than it has in recent years, newcar sales are soaring and automakers are plowing their emergent profits

into a bounty of brand-new and significantly redesigned models.

Compact crossover SUVs are on a pace to outsell midsize sedans this year, aided by a plethora of new models added to this burgeoning segment. Buyers who can afford to indulge will find luxury and sports cars to be well represented, with new and revised pickups and truckbased SUVs available for those with more purposeful needs.

FAMILY CARS/CROSSOVER SUVS << Chevrolet Trax. Sold in 60 global markets, the subcompact Trax crossover finally comes to Chevy dealers in the U.S.; if looks a bit familiar, that’s because Buick sells a more upscale version as the Encore. A 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine puts a peppy 138 horsepower to the pavement, with frontdrive standard and rear-drive optional.

The cabin might be on the small side, but it’s tastefully trimmed and comes with 10 air bags. Among its many connectivity features, the Trax offers built-in 4G LTE network service with the ability to serve as a rolling Wi-Fi hot spot for mobile devices.

Chrysler 200. A former ugly duckling, Chrysler transforms its midsize 200 into a swan by virtue of an extensive redesign.The sedan features expressive new exterior styling with a revamped interior that gives it a far richer look and feel. Improved driving dynamics come courtesy of the car’s newfound European roots, courtesy of Italy’s Alfa Romeo. A Fiatsupplied 2.4-liter 173-horsepower fourcylinder engine comes standard, with Chrysler’s smooth and quick 3.6-liter 295-horsepower V6 alternately available.

<< Lexus NX. The luxury brand’s first compact crossover SUV, the curvaceous NX is also Lexus’ first model to pack a turbocharged engine.

That would be a 2-liter 235-horsepower turbo-four in the 200t version; an F-SPORT model ups the ante with a specially tuned suspension for improved handling. Meanwhile, the fuel-saving 300h hybrid model comes powered by a 2.5-liter gasoline engine that’s augmented by an electric motor-generator and self-charging battery pack to produce the equivalent of 194 horses. Available features include a new wireless charging tray for select smartphones.

Jeep Renegade. This new compact crossover SUV revives a name from Jeep’s celebrated past. Looking something like a cross between a Jeep Wrangler and a Kia Soul, the angular Renegade comes powered by a choice of 1.4 or 2.4-liter Fiat-supplied turbocharged engines with 160 and 184 horsepower, respectively; the available automatic transmission boasts nine speeds. Front drive is standard with two separate “Trail Rated” 4X4 systems optional for those who choose to venture off-road; many of the latest high-tech accident-avoidance features are offered for those who tend to stick to the pavement instead.

Lincoln MKC. Lincoln joins Lexus in the red-hot small luxury crossover market for 2015 with the new MKC. It shares its engineering roots with the Ford Escape, but cuts a sleeker exterior profile and treats its occupants to a posher interior.The MKC’s standard 2-liter 240-horsepower turbocharged “EcoBoost” four-cylinder engine comes from the Escape, with a new 2.3-liter 285-horsepower turbofour optional. A long list of options includes a new park-assist system that not only automatically guides the vehicle into a parallel parking space but steer it out of one, too.

Ford Mustang. A major redesign gives the original “pony car” a fresh look and modern technology. Continuing as a coupe or convertible, the new Mustang offers a choice of a new 2.3-liter “EcoBoost” turbocharged fourcylinder engine with over 300 horsepower on tap, as well as upgraded versions of the car’s 3.7-liter V6 and 5-liter V8. A new integral-link rear suspension replaces previous generations’ antiquated solid rear axle and promises adept ride and handling characteristics. An available Selectable Driving Modes system allows the driver to adjust the car’s steering effort, engine response, and transmission and stability control settings via dashboardmounted toggle switches.

Alfa Romeo 4C. Parent company Fiat plans to bring its Alfa Romeo brand back to North America for the 2015 model year, starting with the low-slung midengine 4C sports coupe. LUXURY CARS Acura TLX. This new midsize luxury/sports sedan replaces both the TL and TSX models in Acura’s lineup for 2015.
