ENDURANCE I’m realizing that a lot of the photos of me where my smile is the biggest are also those in which I’m wearing a bike helmet. It also turns out a number of those photos are with Bobby, and a handful of them have been placed alongside several publisher letters here in Spoke+Blossom. This one probably won’t be the last …

There really is something about being on a bike that brings forth such a sense of fun and freedom. Sometimes it’s challenging to pedal uphill, of course, and certain downhills have their tricky turns, yet I believe the bicycle was one of the best tools ever invented, as it offers countless benefits for utility, leisure and sport.

This photo was taken right after Bobby and I each took a final lap on the 18 Hours of Fruita course this past May. We were on teams with ample rest between each effort, but the quality of mental and physical endurance the event requires is significant. Maybe our grins are so wide in this photo because the race was finally complete.

Finishing feels great, but to begin … that’s often the hardest part.

Endurance is about continuing to endure, but stepping to the start line is what takes the most guts.

As another stunning issue of Spoke+Blossom has come together for us all here, I’m overwhelmed by the audacity it has taken to push through the uphill climb that is publishing magazines. We keep smiling, and that’s a lot because of you — the readers and partners who believe in the marathon, the long run, the pedal that keeps us pushing.

We really wouldn’t have it any other way, and thank you for coming along for the ride with us.

WWn July 8-9, 2023, 150 juried artists from across the country gather for Art in

the Park, the largest arts festival in Northwest Colorado.

Art in the Park celebrates 50 years this summer with a wide range of artistic mediums, including clay, fiber, glass and metal sculptures, jewelry, paper, wood and two-dimensional fine art, such as paintings and photography.

The free, family-friendly festival also offers small-batch retail food items, cottage items and books (with visiting authors) in addition to live entertainment and interactive creative stations.

Kids will also love the face painting, balloon animals and henna tattoos.

Steamboat Creates, a community-oriented nonprofit with a deep history of supporting artists and cultural activities in the region, manages and produces the event. Located in the grassy West Lincoln Park, which features

mighty Yampa River, vendors showcase their unique, handcrafted goods. The event draws approximately 10,000 attendees throughout the weekend.

“We are continually looking for ways to innovate and entertain our festival-goers. There is something special for everyone,” says Kim Keith, executive director of Steamboat Creates.

About 250 artists submit applications, and Steamboat Creates chooses only the top 150. Judging criteria includes artistic merit, professionalism, quality, innovation and uniqueness of work. All artists are encouraged to demonstrate their craft during the festival.

“It is fun and colorful,” Keith adds. “Expect to be greeted with our famous Western hospitality.

Alpine Gardens holds workshops in addition to its rotating indoor exhibits, outdoor displays and library. Yoga takes place three days a week in the gardens in June and July.

Guided garden tours and volunteer gardening opportunities offer an even more experiential approach to the gardens. Currently, it takes more than 3,500 hours of volunteer time to maintain the gardens, give tours and run the gift shop and events.

FILLING 16 oz mascarpone cheese 8 oz crème fraîche ¾ cup powdered sugar 1 tsp vanilla ½ tsp ginger ½ tsp mace Pinch cardamom 2 cups heavy cream FRUIT LAYER 6 peaches, sliced 1 cup peach jam ¼ tsp ginger ¼ tsp mace Pinch cardamom 6-7 cups of 1-inch cubes (equivalent of 3 9-inch rounds) of white or yellow sponge cake or preferred variety; store bought is fine. I used two angel food cakes from the grocery store.

1. Combine the ingredients for the fruit layer in a bowl, and let sit for about an hour before assembly.

2. Whip the cream into stiff peaks.

Set aside.

3. In a separate bowl, beat together mascarpone cheese, crème fraîche, spices and powdered sugar until smooth and well incorporated.

4. Gently fold whipped cream, about a quarter at a time, into the mascarpone cheese mixture. Be careful not to deflate the cream too much, so it doesn’t become too runny.

5. Start layering in a trifle dish or large flatbottomed bowl with ¼ of the cream mixture.

Then layer half the cake, half of the fruit mixture and half of the remaining cream mixture. Repeat, ending with cream mixture on the top. Garnish with blueberries, if desired.

The Amazing, Interesting, Dangerous, and Somewhat True Adventures of Prince Tadpole & Princess Clara by VP Felmlee is the story of how animals make such an important difference in our homes. Some may not have had the best of lives, but once in a while, there is a happy ending for both them — and us.

While the book is fiction, some of the story is based on fact: a cat was abandoned; she was pregnant; she had kittens; and one of them was indeed a dwarf.

“When Tadpole was born, there was a natural curiosity about him, followed very quickly by a realization that there would be many challenges,” Felmlee says. “It was tempting to share him with the world, but my husband and I resisted that urge. However, there was always a thought in the back of our minds that a fictionalized version of his story for young adults might benefit an organization like Roice-Hurst.”

Felmlee chose to donate proceeds from the book to Roice-Hurst Humane Society, a nonprofit animal shelter and adoption center in Grand Junction.

As a kid, Wild had been a dancer, doing everything from swing dancing at the Mercury Café in Denver to tap, jazz and ballet. She found expression through movement. And when she wasn’t honing a routine or fiddling with beads, she was outside playing amongst the Colorado rocks and trees. Something about the rocks had always captured her attention. In her teenage years she became a rock climber, and later, a mountain guide.

While working as a mountain guide, she noticed there was a certain mold that guides were compelled to fit into. She wondered how to blend her own unique skill set and confidence into what was expected of her.

Physically, the process is very demanding. “If I go climbing and make jewelry on the same day, my tendons and hands are shot,” she says. “But, it feels so satisfying to have something that was in your head be created in your hands. It’s like this release when everything within your body is telling you to get it out and put it into something.”

Bins of hibiscus blossoms, pristine manzana peppers and chile-lime chapulines (crickets) replace the iced tea, bell peppers and mixed nuts of their American counterparts. The meat counter is diverse and has a near constant procession of fresh cuts and novel offerings, like marinated pulpo (octopus) and short ribs. Likewise, the produce offers remarkable Mexican fruits, like sour prickly pears and fresh guava and mountains of classic Mexican flavors, like epazote and chiltepins.

There are courts all around Western Colorado — Delta, Montrose, Fruita, Palisade, Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, Aspen and Vail, to name a few locations. Grand Junction stands out thanks to the collaboration between the club, Parks and Recreation and the city.

“We’re lucky here in a lot of ways,” says George Gerson, the club’s membership and communications director. “People from all over the state and a lot from other states are club members. It’s inexpensive to join; there’s a bunch of perks (ball and bags); it doesn’t cost anything to play; there’s free tournaments; we run clinics.

And, we have Tao.’’ Thongvanh has won dozens of gold medals at pro senior tournaments around the country. He’s also carved out time to work with community leaders and has suggested ways to increase the number of courts and to grow the club.

“Tao has done so much to get us and keep us going,” says Furnace. “Not only is he a talented player, but he’s also a great motivator and teacher. He has been so generous with his time in helping all of us.”

PICKLEBALL TERMINOLOGY • ATP (Around-the-Post): A shot that is hit around (not necessarily over) the net and the net post. Occurs when your opponent pulls you excessively wide with a dink.

• Banger: A person who likes to virtually always hit the ball hard. A banger is frequently not very good at hitting dinks or drop shots.

• Dink: A soft shot that is intended to arc over the pickleball net and land within the non-volley zone.

• Double bounce rule: Refers to the requirement that the ball bounces twice (on the serve and on the service return) before a player is allowed to hit the ball out of the air.

• Drop shot: A groundstroke shot that falls short of the opponent’s position.

• Drop shot volley: A volley shot that is designed to “kill” the speed of the ball and return it short, near the net, to an opponent positioned at or near the baseline.

• Fault: A fault is any action that stops play because of a rule violation.

• Non-volley zone (The Kitchen): The section of court adjacent to the net. A player cannot volley a ball while standing within the non-volley zone. It includes all lines surrounding the zone.

• Transition zone: The area of the court between the non-volley line and the baseline, sometimes referred to as “no man’s land.”

There were a few occasions where my favorite options weren’t available. One night, I chose to sleep at a Walmart parking lot; the sleeping was minimal, but I felt safe overall.

On my only night in Wyoming, I did stay in a hotel. The original plan was to find public land to camp on, but after reading some concerning reviews on the iOverlander app about long-term residents in these areas, I felt the $150 hotel room was worth it. Always have the money to stay at a hotel if you need to!

Where to Shower?

As I mentioned before, I was lucky enough to have friends who allowed me to stay with them for a few days at a time, but there were some periods that I turned to Planet Fitness for a shower. With a super low monthly fee and locations all across the U.S., Planet Fitness is a great option.

Trust Your Gut Our mind-body connection is much stronger than we think. When you feel any hesitation, pit in your stomach or bad energy — trust it. There is no one else to bounce the plan off of other than you. The practice of trusting yourself in your day-to-day will naturally make you more comfortable the next time you have to rely on your own intuition.

Being familiar with self-defense practices is always a good idea, and if you feel it is necessary, being comfortable with legal methods of protection or having a canine trained in personal protection are all viable options if handled appropriately. :

“If I had to pick one to be the state mushroom, hawk’s wing would be it,” explains Trent Blizzard.

Foragers like the Blizzards spent years going out with knowledgeable friends, attending mushroom festivals, joining mycological societies (there’s one in Denver and an emerging one in Glenwood) and learning about various mushrooms.

“We started with two species, then five, then 12 mushrooms, and now, we know of maybe 50 edible mushrooms,” Kristen Blizzard says. “Start slowly, and make sure you put the time in to increase your learning curve.”

DON’T LIKE MUSHROOMS? According to Kristen and Trent Blizzard, that’s like saying you don’t like fish.

“There’s definitely as much diversity in mushrooms as there is in fish,” Trent Blizzard says. “They all taste so different, and they’re full of protein, vitamins and minerals. They’re a very healthy part of the diet.”

Chanterelles have a fruity taste, porcinis offer a very earthy taste, saffron milk caps have a mildly nutty, woodsy flavor, hawk’s wings are the most “mushroomy” of the bunch and puffballs, while mild and delicious, absorb the flavors around them like tofu does, Kristen Blizzard explains.

And, as the Blizzards point out in their book, “One of the best things about cooking wild mushrooms is that every time you open your dried caches, their unique aroma recalls your foraging experience, creating an immediate and visceral connection back to the forest.

THE TRAIL Although there are many spots around town where you can begin this loop hike, the most common starting point is the Ouray Visitor’s Center on the northwest edge of town next to the Ouray Hot Springs. Plenty of free parking is available, and you’ll want to pop inside for a map.

I concur with locals to hike the loop in a clockwise direction, as navigation is much easier.

From the Visitor Center, cross U.S. 550 where your adventure begins with a set of railroad-tie steps. A sign will point you along a gravel path just before the trail begins ascending the hillside and another set of railroad-tie steps. The first 2/3 mile of the trail is the most difficult, with a series

of steep climbs followed by a narrow stretch along a cliff face.

You’ll soon enjoy outstanding views of Main Street and 11,475-foot Hayden Mountain towering over the south end of town. Cascade Falls is the first up-close-and-personal experience. This waterfall is the lowest in a series of seven waterfalls, as Cascade Creek runs down Cascade Mountain. Spring and early summer are normally the best times for viewing the waterfall when water volumes are much higher.

Cross the footbridge over Cascade Creek, and after a short steep climb, the trail becomes less strenuous and exposed. At 1.3 miles, the trail encounters Amphitheater Campground Road.

Do not continue to the trail directly across the road, but turn right and follow the road a short distance, .12 miles, then turn left onto the Baby Bathtubs Trail to continue on the loop. Hikers will enjoy viewing water dancing through a series of several small rock “bathtubs” carved into the stream bed.

At 1.7 miles, hikers reach the Portland Trail junction; cross a footbridge and travel another 0.2 miles to reach County Road 16. At just 50 yards up the gravel road, the trail forks off to the right through a beautiful grassy field with spectacular views of the Million Dollar Highway and the surrounding mountains. This section travels over the highest point on the trail and is considered the most scenic.

Cross U.S. 550, and follow a wooded dirt road to a bridge crossing over the Uncompahgre River near one of the premier ice climbing spots in the world and the Box Canon Park. Stay left, and cross the Box Canon High Bridge spanning the spectacular Canon Creek Gorge. Immediately after the bridge, you’ll pass through the old Ouray water tunnel.

At this point, the trail appears to drop you into town, but additional land has been acquired, extending the journey. When the trail does bring you back to town, follow Oak Street north to the City’s Maintenance Shop, cross the footbridge on the right and return to the Visitor Center where you began.

HAP recently received a capital investment grant from The Colorado Health Foundation to help purchase a building in downtown Montrose, which will house HAP offices and will be renovated to provide a safe and welcoming space for immigrants and refugees.

In Gunnison, HAP is involved in an innovative, private-public partnership to implement an immigrant inclusion initiative called Welcoming America. This effort includes local government, business, the philanthropic community,

others. It offers coaching and assistance to build connections between immigrants and community services.

While the Gunnison effort is geographically targeted, it is part of a large national movement that could be replicated elsewhere.

Finally, HAP continues to be “the go-to place when people are looking for help in a variety of areas that the immigrant community encounters,” shares Acker.

From working with trailer park residents to inform them of their rights to providing a dedicated fund to assist immigrant workers displaced during the COVID-19 pandemic, HAP is committed to social justice in all its forms.

And, the Western Colorado community is better for having this celebrated “trailblazer” here at home. :

Mark Dillen, who is involved in public affairs and political advocacy, points out that Ukrainians of Colorado was originally founded to keep Ukrainian culture alive, but now, the organization’s goal is to keep Ukraine alive.

Dillen encourages Coloradans to support Ukraine however they can and at their own level, which could look like a mission trip, community activities, supporting refugees, political awareness, fundraising or sharing stories and inspiring others to help.

Dubrova recently attended a screening of 20 Days in Mariupol, a film made by two Ukrainian journalists that documents the first 20 days of war after the Russian invasion. She remembers watching the film next to a refugee that had lived through the experience. “Her father was a Ukrainian army veteran, and one of the neighbors ratted him out, and Russians killed him,” Dubrova recalls the woman’s story.
