SUSTAINABILITY In early March, the Spoke+Blossom editorial team chose to theme this summer 2020 issue “Sustainability.” Just two weeks later, Colorado was rocked with the reality of COVID-19. It was a confusing and challenging spring that has led to an unsettled summer — an uncertain future for so many people, places, businesses and events all over the world. We could’ve changed our theme, as topics of hope and resiliency seem more than appropriate for the times. Sustainability, though, is a commitment to move forward mindfully and with purpose; to realize that your choices right now have an impact that ripples in time and space; to not abandon reverence and respect for this earth, your community, our country and all of humanity. As everything shifted so rapidly, what was sustained? Perhaps it was a foundation of family that was able to be fostered more deeply, or a project once buried that rose to the surface of your efforts and creativity. Maybe you paused a little, read more magazines, rearranged your priorities. Our hope at Spoke+Blossom is to shed light on what makes Western Colorado so special and worth sustaining. As always, this issue shines with wonderful news from the region, bright recipes and uplifting stories to inspire your season. We have a feature article highlighting Phoenix Haus out of Grand Junction, a company that specializes in energy efficient homes that use a prefab building system aligned with healthy and affordable living. They’re creating homes that are modern and sustainable, with multi-gen options that can form a new vision for the family unit. Sustainability is not just about maintaining the status quo and riding out mediocracy — it’s an ethos that pairs hope and action to lead us toward a better world. Now is the time when we can each choose our next steps from a new sphere of perspective and possibility. It’s cliché, yes, but we know clichés are often true: sustainable living starts with you. Choose what it is you want to sustain and commit to it fully.
