Dear Friends Since moving to Spokane over three decades ago, we have adored the music of the Spokane Symphony and the many people involved in the organization. We were invited to join the ranks of the volunteers just after getting settled in town and through our involvement we came to love the musicians, conductors, patrons, volunteers and staff. We call this wonderful group of people, our Symphony family. We are so fortunate to have such a high-caliber orchestra in our community with deeply committed musicians and conductors.

We are thrilled that James Lowe is the wonderful new Music Director.

He has already made many friends and is leading marvelous initiatives on lead new ways the orchestra can connect with our community.

It is an honor for us to serve as the chairs of the Sound of Spokane Campaign. Together we will take the Spokane Symphony and Fox Theater to the next level, all for the benefit of the people of the Inland Northwest.

Together with you, the Spokane Symphony moves into the future in an exciting, innovative way to become the most collaborative orchestra in the country.

JAMES LOWE SPOKANE SYMPHONY MUSIC DIRECTOR

Orchestras can often be seen as a museum of dead music and we wish to fight this miscomprehension in every interaction with the public. As Mahler said “tradition is not the worship of ashes but the preservation of fire”, I believe our institution should be working to pass on that flame. That we can hear music and experience an emotion of a person often long-dead is a profound experience. As the record producer Suvi Raj Grubb said “Every human being is alone in that we are locked in the isolation of our own mind. When you hear a piece of music you feel ‘[the composer] too has been through this. It is as if the musician is saying to you ‘you are not alone. I am with you.’

“Giving fine performances of great music should always remain a core value for any symphony orchestra, but I believe we can and should additionally use the power of music as a tool for social, health and community betterment.”
