When you hear us say that 'Volunteers are the Heartbeat of the Center', well, believe it!!!

The last two months have been flat-out, running busy here -- with three fundraisers, two big events, a bunch of rental events, along with growing classes and activities.

So, enter the VOLUNTEERS!!!!

There was the 1-90 Rest Stop fundraiser on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 28, 29 and 30. And thanks to volunteers Mic Cochrane and Carol Gabel, plus the volunteers who worked the nine shifts and those who brought in 120 dozen cookies, that effort was a huge

success. A big WOW!!!

Then there was the Operations & Maintenance Raffle culminating at the Oktoberfest Dinner on October 5. In an environment made more difficult to sell tickets this year, it took good ideas and more work from volunteers like Lani Batters and Donna Johnson who did everything from hawking tickets to blowing up balloons; as well as Dave and Jan Monk who provided some last-minute service.

The next day was the well-run Texas Hold'em Tournament and our wellorganized group of players who staged it -- headed by volunteers Bill Staeb and Ernie Phillips. That highly successful project brought in funds earmarked for the 'Burn the Mortgage' campaign. And another big WOW!!!

Then on October 9, our Centenarian luncheon, honoring ten 100-year-olds, and volunteers like Mary Van Couvering and the Teal Ladies made it ever so perfect.

ALL OF THESE were successful projects because of MANY VOLUNTEERS!!!

I am always in awe of them. THANK YOU!!!

progress being made 'Burn the Mortgage': onBigdecreasing amount owed

A huge 'thank you' to our Texas Hold'em Group here at the Center who put on a very successful tournament Saturday, October 6, to benefit the 'Burn the Mortgage' cause. Because of their efforts, we were able to add another large amount to the principal payment.

Since this program began about 18-months ago, we have shaved more than $110,000 off the mortgage significantly reducing the amount still owing. That includes, of course, all of the 'Burn the Mortgage' payments as well as the regular monthly payments. Be sure to attend Annual Meeting Please make sure your plans for November include the Thanksgiving Luncheon Tuesday, November 13, sponsored Curt Connolly, President, by City South Auto Body, Board of Directors and prepared by specialty luncheon chef Greg Miley. Sign up at the desk for the Thanksgiving lunch.

The annual membership meeting that follows the luncheon will be

concise. Some important topics and actions will be addressed. Board members will be elected from the slate of six candidates whose bios are included in this newsletter. (See page 7) Important by-laws revisions will be presented for adoption by the general membership.

Special thanks go to Linn Edmondson and his nominating committee for their tireless work in getting the slate of candidates together.

Also, please stop in to the travel office and introduce yourself to Marnie McCoy, our new travel manager. She will give you a quick overview of upcoming travel opportunities.

Bylaws changes to be voted on at November General Meeting

Changes to the current SSCC Bylaws to be voted on at the November 13, 2012 Annual Fall General Membership Meeting include:

•Change title from Honorary Member to Emeritus Member to reflect what has been our practice. Clarify that an Emeritus Member may serve as an additional member of the Board of Directors. The selection of any Emeritus Member is announced at the Annual Fall General Membership Meeting.

•Create consistency throughout the document to use the term Annual Fall General Membership Meeting.

•General members may submit additional names for the slate of nominees for vacant Board of Director positions. The person must agree to be nominated. Those must be submitted in time to be in the October newsletter and must include a brief biography and photo. Nominees must be current General members and actively involved at the Center.

•The President appoints the two General Members to serve on the Nominations Committee rather than having an election at the Annual Fall General Membership Meeting.

•Eliminate the Board position of Immediate Past President.

•If there is no Director to serve as Chair of a Standing Committee, the President may appoint a General Member. She/he must be an active member of the Center and willing to attend Board of Director meetings and/or submit written reports as deemed necessary.

for the annual membership meeting to be held during our November Thanksgiving luncheon. All members are encouraged to attend. Presentations regarding the 'state of the Center' will be made by Board President Curt Connolly, Board Treasurer Ray Tomlinson, and Executive Director Bonnie McDade.

Also, voting will be held on 1) recommended changes in the bylaws (see information at left); and 2) candidates for the four open positions on the Board.

A traditional Thanksgiving luncheon will also be served heralding the beginning of a multicultural holiday season.

We have the best Zumba teacher in the Inland Northwest with Deanar Young. A former Broadway musical dancer, he is full of energy, talent and charisma. Come meet him and have fun, fun, fun with Zumba.

The Zumba exercise program combines Latin rhythms and easy-tofollow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program while enjoying a great workout. Working out with Zumba provides an exciting hour of calorieburning, body energizing, awe-inspiring movements meant to engage and captivate!

Zumba Gold takes the popular Latin-dance inspired workout and makes it accessible for seniors, beginners or others needing modifications in their exercise routine.

The book club at Southside Senior & Community Center is happy to host Pat Pavroti, Director of the Spokane Public and Susan Creed, fiction maven for a morning of talking library, talking books and enjoying an old fashioned kaffee klatsch. Pat will talk about the library system, electronic books and she will answer your questions regarding the use of the library. Susan is an enthusiastic reader and a great resource for your reading…so bring a pencil and paper to jot down her suggestions.

Come to learn more about the library, more about recent and old favorite books, coffee, tea, goodies and there will be door prizes.

We're collecting items ALL year long When you, or your friends

and relatives, are ready to downsize or get rid of household items that would be great candidates for the 2013 garage sale, you can now bring them to the Center any time of the year. You don't have to wait until spring.

We want to make sure we have lots and lots of items for our garage sale customers to choose from, so we've made arrangements to store items until the sale next June.

MARY VAN COUVERING

Volunteers are the heartbeat

of the Southside Senior & Community Center. Thank you to all who give so generously of your time, energy and talent.

We could not operate the Center without all of these fabulous volunteers. Each year they give approximately 25,700 volunteer hours to the Center.

Mary Van Couvering is a real 'find' for the Center. She came here to play mahjonng and, very quickly, she was tapped to do a few tasks. When the

breadth of her talents surfaced, the quiet but oh, so, capable, Mary found herself knee-deep in very important projects.-such as typing all of the information for over 1,450 Center members into a new database; or rounding up the 100year old celebrants for our Centenarian luncheon. As if that wasn't enough, she even baked and decorated ten beautiful birthday cakes for each of the 100-yearolds. Seems she can do everything!!!

The former long-time head of a large title company, Mary Van Couvering is the epitome of the perfect volunteer.

Meet the six candidates nominated for Board positions The Center's Nominating Committee, headed by Linn Edmonson and Betty Cosand, have put forth the names of six Center members to fill the board positions open this year. Voting will be held at the Annual Membership Meeting, November 13 Lani Batters, current Board member and Volunteer Chair.

Lani has been a member of the Center for four years and currently serves as Volunteer Chair, as well as chair of the 'Up, Up and Away' annual maintenance and operations raffle fundraiser. She serves two weekly shifts as a front desk ambassador, is active in the Care Bears and Bereavement group and travels on a variety of trips with the Center. She is a long-time resident of Spokane where her late husband retired from the military. She has three children,eight grandchildren, two cats, four dogs, five fish and two chirping birds..

Curt Connolly, current Board President After his retirement in 2006, Curt joined the Center where he participated in the wood carving group and volunteered on the travel committee as a driver and trip escort. He is a member of the Pages of Harmony, a barbershop choral group, and he is also an accomplished banjo and guitar player.

Curt has a B.S. degree in forestry management and worked as a forester, as well as a real estate broker and district manager of a national real estate marketing firm for 13 years. As a volunteer, he worked building churches in Idaho, California, Washington and November 2012

Botswana, and then was asked to be Director of Volunteers for the church organization where he supervised all operations for over 500 building projects handling revenues of more than $500 million and working with hundreds of volunteers.

Donna Johnson, current Board member and Development Chair.

Donna has been a member of the Center for over 20 years and is also a lifetime member. She has lived in Spokane since 1957 where she was a travel agent, a commercial artist and owned and operated an antique store for over 30 years. She has been active member of the Civic Theater for over 40 years.

Robert J. LaPointe Prior to his retirement, Bob was Gonzaga's first Director of Development beginning in July 1992. As the Assistant Vice President of University Relations, he oversaw annual and planned giving, major gifts and law and athletic development.

Bob came from UCLA, where he served as Director of Development for the School of Engineering and Applied Science. A graduate of the University of New Hampshire, he had been involved in higher education development work for

25 years.

Bob and wife, Karen, are in their second year of membership at SSCC. He has an adult son and two adult daughters.

Golf and travel are among his favorite activities.

Kris Miller current Board Secretary Kris has been a member of the Center for five years. She participates in the Solo Travelers group and the book club as well as attends craft classes.

Prior to her retirement in 2007, she worked for 30 years at the Community Colleges of Spokane. Her last position there was as Executive Director of the Head Start/ ECEAP/Early Head Start programs for the college's Institute for Extended Learning (IEL). She has a Masters Degree in Social Work.

Ed Stiles

Ed has been a member of SSCC for one year, having moved to Spokane from Southern California where he was a real estate developer.

Ed has volunteered for a variety of projects and currently works a shift as a front desk ambassador. He has served on several boards, enjoys public speaking and other activities such a golf and tennis.

Holiday Cinnamon Pastry Ring class

Join Lou Connolly as she shares the recipe and technique for baking this perfect holiday gift or last-minute party pastry. The class will last for about two hours. Lou will demonstrate the procedure; you will then make the pastry and filling and, as the dough rises, enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and a taste of the pastry ring that Lou will bring with her. When you leave you will take home a perfectly prepared and oven ready Holiday Cinnamon Pastry Ring.

Please bring a rolling pin and an 8- inch spring form pan OR Bundt cake pan.

Current carpet is original to the building and has hosted thousands of feet, spilled food and drink, and just plain tough wear and tear. It's threadbare!!!

We've started a 'new carpet' fund.

Commerical vacuum cleaner. We have a

lot of floors to clean every day, and our two little lightweight vacuums are on their last legs (well, wheels, actually.)

Plus, they're just not up to the task.

Happy Thanksgiving to our dancing friends Over the highway and into our town — They come from a long way. Southside friends all greet them—we’re happy they’ve come to play. We dance to good music, enjoy snack time, and meet new friends each day. We welcome recovered dancers, pray for all others and enjoy your company each Thursday.

We won’t be dancing on Thursday, Nov. 8th, because of the Center's Veterans Day Celebration and the Project Joy orchestra performing; and, of course, we’ll all be home stuffing ourselves on Thanksgiving, Nov. 22, but that still leaves the other three Thursdays to dance with friends.

Fall Folk Festival

Break out your fiddle and dancing shoes for Spokane Folklore Society’s, 17th annual Folk Festival. Join us at Spokane Community College for an afternoon of serious toe-tappin’ and delights for everyone!

The festival features eight stages of traditional and ethnic dance and music along with workshops, special entertainment and crafts for children and jamming. The traditional crafts for sale make great gifts, and there are a variety of delectable morsels to make up your mid-day meal. The Saturday schedule even features a live KPBX Radio show.

Coeur d’Alene Christmas Lighting Ceremony and Fireworks Cruise First we’ll have an early dinner at the Dockside and feel the Christmas spirit dance throughout the Coeur d’Alene Resort!

Then at 5:00 pm we’ll board our VIP cruise boat for the 5:30 pm adventure and witness the impact of nearly 2 million lights sparking at once, Coeur d’Alene truly shines! Be the first to see this year’s new displays. While taking it all in, we’ll weave through colorful firework-filled barges.

We’ll rest at the perfect spot to watch the incredible, 4th of July-style, extravaganza!

this year and many requested an in-depth look at just one pawn shop. How are prices for pawn determined for the loans and for future sale? How does the pawn shop owner know if the items are stolen or rightfully owned?

Holiday Winefest tasting

Back for another year: Holdiay WineFest! What a way to kick off the Holdiay season …and, what a way to show off just a few of the terrific Spokane area wineries to your outof-town visitors! Wrap up the kitchen chores and hop on the van for a fun afternoon of tasting capped off with a fantastic dinner. We promise you will not have to do the dishes!

We will make our way to four wineries: Overbluff Cellars, Barrister, Latah Creek Cellars, and lovely Arbor Crest on the hilltop. Tasting fees may apply.

After touring and tasting, not only vintage wines, but also doing a little Christmas stocking shopping, we will make our way to Abrosia Bistro and Wine Bar in the Spokane Valley for a no-host early dinner.

The renown Gonzaga University choir is a select, mixed ensemble of 54 voices that is rooted in the Jesuit, Catholic, and humanistic traditions and is led by Timothy Westerhaus, Gonzaga’s director of choral activities. They have toured nationally and internationally and have amassed an impressive following.

What does alternative energy really mean for Spokane?

The Palouse Wind Project

Coming in 2013, we will do a study of alternative energy systems beginning with the enormous wind farms we see throughout our region.

We will start with the Palouse Wind Project just 35 miles south of Spokane. Construction began in October 2011 and turbine erection continues today. The project is expected to be online and operational before the end of 2012. When finished, Palouse Wind, which harnesses power with 300 foot blades, will have the capacity to generate enough clean energy to power 30,000 homes.

Men’s Day Out to Wagstaff Inc. and Spokane Industries

Join us to tour Wagstaff, Inc., a 64-year-old, Spokanebased manufacturer, which provides machinery, to enable aluminum producers to transform molten aluminum into solid shapes using “direct chill” casting. The direct chill casting process uses water to chill molten aluminum in order to solidify it into desired shapes. Around the world, aluminum producers look to Wagstaff for the know-how and equipment to safely cast aluminum.

After lunch we will also visit a division of Spokane Industries, their Spokane Steel Foundry. This manufacturer has been serving commercial and industrial customers around the world for more than 50 years.

Today, the foundry’s output runs the gamut – from durable wear parts for impact crushers, to a wide variety of high specification quality castings for the construction, mining, manufacturing, transportation, aluminum and defense industries.

Come along for this fascinating day and be sure to wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes!
