Passion Play 2016 The Lady Grey Passion Play brings scenes from Christ’s birth, life, suffering, death, resurrection and ascension into heaven, magnificently to life.

Originated by the local Dutch Reformed Church, the Passion Play is a joint venture between the Lady Grey Arts Academy, the Dutch Reformed Church and the community of Lady Grey to spread the Gospel in a very special way.

Its unique feature is the combination of various arts disciplines to tell the story.

It goes without saying that Drama and Acting are involved, but that is not all.

The Altech Concert Choir also performs a number of sacred choral works, appropriate to particular moments in the play (Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus, selections from Mozart’s Requiem and other classical and contemporary choral pieces). During the course of the Passion Play, audiences have the opportunity to see classical ballet as well as modern dancing as part of the narrative.

Throughout the production, fine art is also utilised to enhance the themes and emotion of the play.

With a cast of roughly 160 performers, this three-day production over Easter weekend takes place in various venues and locales in and around the picturesque town of Lady Grey. The cast members are all members of the Lady Grey community, including teachers, farmers, business people, pensioners and all other walks of life, as well as learners from the prestigious Lady Grey Arts Academy.

During the years it has grown from strength to strength. What started as a relatively small production, with an audience of approximately 100, has grown into a semi-professional production, attracting hundreds of people from all over the country to Lady Grey during the Easter Weekend.

The complete production is community-based and is planned, performed and directed by voluntary members of the Lady Grey community. Most of the costumes and props are locally-made, relying on members of the community to assist in this enormous task.

The Passion Play starts on Good Friday at 14:00 and ends on Easter Sunday.

The epic history unfolds in three main parts over the three days that it takes to perform the entire script: the prophecy of the coming of the Messiah, Christ’s early life and the start of his ministry; Christ’s miracles, teachings, capture and death; Christ’s resurrection, ascension and the founding of the early church.

About 600 visitors are expected to descend on Lady Grey from 25 - 27 March 2016 to see this truly unique production aimed at exposing as many people as possible to the joy of Easter Weekend.

Visitors are challenged to become part of the action by dressing in period costume, and participating in responses and symbolic actions during the course of the performances.

MISSION The Lady Grey Passion Play strives to restore the religious character of Easter Weekend by bringing together as many people from the various church denominations as possible, to relive visually and physically the birth, life, suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Programme Notes Hattingh Davel: Jesus I am extremely privileged and honoured to, once again, be part of the Lady Grey Passion Play this year. The hard work, dignity and talent present in the school and the town of Lady Grey is a testimony of a Greater Power.

This year, I would like to extend my gratitude to a number of people who have supported me, trusted me and guided me through this astonishing and life changing journey.

To the members of the Lady Grey Arts Academy who have shared the stage with me over the past six years: you have inspired me and brought me to joyful tears. You have shown me what is to live your dream.

Hendrik, Johan and Marquin, thank you for believing in me, guiding me, trusting me and bringing out the best in me. You have showed me true friendship.

Lastly, my family and wife, Annerien, thank you for always supporting me. You have shown me the meaning of being a true servant of God with your unconditional love.

Johan Hattingh: Director 2016 is the year when Easter is three weeks earlier than usual, and rehearsals could only start in late February.

I trust that with the help of my crew: Marquin Sharneck, Mariëtte Pitout, and the assistant directors Marie Swanepoel, Marcelle Botha and Vernon Francis, that this Passion Play will be an amazing experience as always.

The proclamation of the Word of God and telling of His story, seems to be getting more and more difficult due to politics and other circumstances.

But as He said to His disciples that it is not going to be easy and people will put you down and ostracise you. We will keep on spreading the message of love and forgiveness.

This Passion Play is to enhance each one's relationship with his/her Saviour and not to judge others.

My utmost gratitude goes to Marquin and Mariëtte who were there to pick up the pieces when I was unable to carry on. Also to Marie, Vernon and Marcelle who did not hesitate to jump in and do things that they never have done. You all have the love and light of God shining through you.

I wish everyone a spiritual renewal and an experience that you will never forget.

Mariëtte Pitout: Musical Director We praise the Lord our Father for blessing us with the wonderful talent of singing and making music. It is a privilege which comes with a great responsibility: using it to glorify and honour His wonderful name. This is what we aim to do with our musical contribution to Passion Play 2016 - all honour to God alone!

The music has been carefully selected in creating the mood, sculpting the ambiance and setting atmosphere, thus creating anticipation. It is a combination of different musical genres, languages and emotions - reflecting the complexity of every persons' most inner being; from the deepest joy, faith and peace, to the darkest, sinful struggle of each human being. In this way all music serves a very specific purpose to bring an honest, true and human element to every character on stage.

A production as big as the Passion Play, does not come easy. It takes a lot of rehearsing, dedication, time, effort, planning and very little sleep. To my choir and soloists: a very special thank you for all your hard work.

Marquin Scharneck: Choreographer Passion Play 2016 - what an emotional roller coaster.

Time was a “little” less this year so everything had to be done with lighting speed but here we are, as the late great Nelson Mandela said: “It always seems impossible until it is done”. With that said I would like to thank our Creator whose grace and mercy knows no bounds. Johan Hattingh, Mariette Pitout, Sakhile Belle, Tersia Cock, Hattingh Davel, Annerien Davel and Marcelle Pulani Botha for their contribution to the success of my choreography for Passion Play 2016.

To fellow danseur Ignatius Beast Monnawabokone for his work in the Child Murders, Possessed man, Cleansing of the temple and Jarius's daughter. To my grade 12 dancers, thank you for your support, inspiration and dedication even when our year started a little rough. To the rest of the dancers thank you for all your hard work, we still have a long way to go but we will travel it together. To Mom, Dad and family, thank you for everything.
