While school governance and school management are not the same, it is important to understand that some of the responsibilities of school governance overlap with those of school management.

WHAT IS A BOARD OF GOVERNORS? A school governing body is a government of the school, established in terms of the South African Schools Act. It is mandated to set policies and rules that govern the school, and to monitor the implementation of the rules. Ÿ St Joseph's College Board of Governors under the capable leadership of Dr D Ferraris consists of the school principal Mr. Wally Borchard, elected representatives (parents, educators, other staff members), and co-opted members of Ÿ

the community.

WHAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS? Ÿ Set the strategic direction, vision and ethos of the school; Ÿ Adopt a constitution setting out how the BOG will operate; Ÿ Adopt a school mission statement setting out the values and beliefs of the school; Ÿ Decide on what religious practices will be followed at the school; Ÿ Monitor and challenge the progress of the school in achieving its priorities; Ÿ ·Exercise employer responsibility; Ÿ ·Ensure the school meets its statutory responsibilities; Ÿ Ensure financial probity; Ÿ Maintaining and improving the school's

property, buildings and grounds and ensuring the premises are well managed; Ÿ Report to the school's stakeholders;

In addition, the Board of Governors can be given any of these functions: Ÿ Decide on an admissions policy for the school. Ÿ Decide on the language policy of the school. Ÿ Adopt a code of conduct for learners which set out disciplinary procedures. Ÿ Decide the times of the school day. Ÿ Make recommendations regarding the appointment of educators at the school. Ÿ Deciding on the extramural curriculum and the choice of subject options according to provincial curriculum policy. Ÿ Buying textbooks, educational material and/or equipment for the school. Ÿ Overseeing the payment of services to the school.

All these decisions and policies must be in line with national policies. Ÿ The school governing body exists to make sure that the school functions properly and must support the principal, the educators and other staff of the school in performing their duties

THE PRINCIPAL Ÿ

The Principal, Mr Wally Borchard plays a dual role. He is expected to attend and participate in all BOG meetings and is responsible for supporting and providing assistance to the BOG and to inform them about policy and legislation.

He is responsible for: Ÿ Supporting and guiding the school's expenditure in consultation with the BOG; Ÿ Helping the BOG keep proper records of school accounts and all school records; Ÿ Overseeing the drawing up of the budget; Ÿ ·Advising on textbooks, educational material and equipment to be bought; Ÿ Monitoring compliance and acting on any non-compliance detected.

School management is about the day to day running of the school and the organisation of the teaching and learning and related activities.

Mr Borchard together with the School Management Team (SMT) is responsible for school management which includes: Managing staff; Detailed planning of the curriculum; School timetables; The admission and placement of learners; Assessing learners and educators; and

All activities at the school that support teaching and learning.

THE PARENTS All parents whose children are registered at school have rights and responsibilities.

Even if you are not elected onto the school governing body, you still have the right to be involved in the affairs of the school by attending meetings of parents. Ÿ You also have the right to be consulted by the educators or the principal about the schooling activities of your child. The principal and the educators at the school must inform you about the behaviour, attendance and learning progress of your child.

Ways to Cooperate with Teachers for the Benefit of Your Child Ÿ Get to know your child's teacher. Introduce yourself to your child's teacher as early in the term as possible. Share your desire to cooperate if any problems arise. Ÿ Attend parent-pupil counselling meetings.

Come prepared with questions and comments. If your child is happy in the classroom, let the teacher know! Share any problems the child has mentioned. Ÿ Read all school communication and respond in a timely fashion when required.

Help your teachers by returning permission requests or notes requiring signatures as quickly as possible. Ÿ Take a team approach to your child's learning. Ask the teacher if there are ways you can help your child do better in school.

If there is confusion about an assignment or project, phone the teacher for some help. Let the teacher know you are interested in your child's progress. Ÿ If problems arise, don't blame the teacher, the child, or yourself —focus on solving the problem. Focus on solving the problem.

Getting angry with the teacher is not in your child's best interest. Often a conversation between the teacher, the parent, and the child will help find a solution. Before siding with your child against a teacher, get the whole story, and discuss it. Ÿ Keep a sense of humour about the whole school scene.

Don't forget to laugh...School days are filled with funny incidents. Share stories from your school experience. Laugh when your child tells you his or her jokes —s/he will appreciate it and learn from it.

At our General Meeting that was held at the beginning of 2015, an agreement was reached that 2014 PTA executive committee should continue serving again this year.

New members and class representatives were chosen to serve and participate in all the PTA members' duties and activities. By March 2015 most of the chosen members were not active. Every month PTA members disappeared and to date only 8 members are active and dedicating their time to attend meetings and organising PTA events.

It has been diďŹƒcult but we made it. All the events that we had to organise this year have been successful. The events include: The Big Walk, Mother and Daughter Tea party and Founders' Day Dinner that was held on the 4th of September 2015.

We have managed to raise more money

that last year with the support of a few parents and the Love of God. We are thankful to all the parents who have shown support at each event that we organised.

It is our hope that more and more parents will come forward to support our PTA as we are doing this for our children. Showing them that we love the school and we fully support the school in all the activities that are happening at our School. Nothing puts a bigger smile on a child's face than seeing his/her parents participating in school activities and a parent that is aware of everything that is happening around the school. It builds their conďŹ dence and boosts their achievements at school.

Head Prefects' Report Being the leadership class of our school's 75th year proved to be a difficult task.

With so many changes occurring, we were not sure if we could handle the pressure. We were not only seen as Matriculants but also leaders who served as the 'middle man' between students and teachers. We had a huge responsibility to be assertive, be good examples – setting benchmarks because “to whom much is given, much is required”.

Day Care - Where life can be fun Day Care is at times as stimulating to the supervisors as it is to the children. We share in the excitement experienced on the sports ďŹ eld, the wins, the losses, injuries and sportsmanship of the 75th Anniversary challenges. Here sharing really is caring because some junior team stars are in Day Care.

This year also saw some changes in Day Care. Mrs. Phlynne Donaldson-Fourie, decided to retire after 15 years of service.

She wrote a poem reminiscing about autumn as a salute to her years of service at CBC. She has been replaced

by Mrs. Denise Edwards, a highly skilled, qualiďŹ ed teacher who has taught from

Grade R to Matric at various schools. She now handles the homework needs of Grade 3 and 5, while Hloekile Botsane assists Grade 2 learners and Rose Willis handles Grade 4 and 6. Homework for Grade 1 is done by Terry Strydom and Lindy Martin. The Grade one learners performed extremely well in the Spel-athon competition with the help of Teacher Terry.

Attention is focused on getting homework done. A good line of communication is established between the teachers and parents. Parents are allowed to discuss the progress of the learners' homework as well as how they could assist at home with work that learners could not complete in class.

In every class in every school there's bound to be learners whose progress is retarded because of learning problems. It is therefore imperative that every effort should be made as far as possible to remove obstacles that impede the child's progress towards future success. To this end Learner Support and Remedial Instruction play a fundamental role in CBC's overall learner developmental programmes.

The principal aim of the Learner Support and Remedial Instruction programme is optimisation of the learning process in order to enable pupils with learning needs to achieve the highest possible levels of proficiency in literacy and mathematics.

The teacher who has daily contact with the learners is often the first to identify a problem. However, when it is of such a nature that it cannot be dealt with in the classroom-situation the child is referred for Learner Support or Remedial Instruction.

During this year 46 children from Grade 2 to 4 were enrolled in Remediation and Support teaching programmes and to date results have been extremely positive. A Stimulation Programme to improve concentration was also implemented effectively with a group of Grade 1 learners.

Workshops on Study Skills and Motivation were presented with very pleasing results to Grades 7 and 9.

VALUE OF THE PROGRAMME The Importance of English and Mathematics cannot be over-emphasized Learners with barriers to learning English The major components of English language are listening, speaking, reading and writing.They are all interrelated.This fundamental relatedness can be deduced from observations of children's development of oral to written expression, which follows the sequence listening, speaking, reading

and writing. Because of this developmental sequence, a problem encountered in one part of the language will usually carry over to another, while proficiency in one part, facilitates the acquisition of another area. For example, in order for children to speak correctly, they must be able to hear and correctly interpret the sounds and their meanings.

Learners who have difficulty with reading and written expression will be at a disadvantage. This barrier permeates all subject areas and therefore it is important to note that any teaching IN English is the teaching OF English.

Learners with barriers to learning Mathematics To develop essential mathematical skills the learner must develop the correct use of the Language of Mathematics; i.e. number vocabulary, number concept and calculation and application skills; They must learn to listen, communicate, think, reason logically and apply the Mathematical knowledge gained; They must also; learn to investigate and solve problems; and build an awareness of the important role that Mathematics plays in real-life situations.

It is important for learners who experience barriers to learning Mathematics to be exposed to activitybased learning. Practical examples using concrete objects together with practical activities should be used for a longer time than with other learners, as moving to abstract work too quickly will result in frustration and regression.

I am proud of what has been achieved in the Remedial and Support Unit during this year and I wish to express my appreciation to Mr Wally Borchard, the Principal, for continuous encouragement, support and freedom of opportunity he has given the Unit.

The keyword for 2015 in the Pre-School is definitely "busy, busy, busy!" This year has gone by so fast and we now find ourselves facing the end of 2015.

We thank the parents for generously supporting our outreach program for Child Welfare. It is always more rewarding to give than to receive.

Our year started off with a "braai" for our parents. It was a huge success and was enjoyed by all.

Our sincere thanks to Mr. Borchard for the repairs done on a regular basis. A special thanks for our ramp at the stairs and the sand under the jungle gym.

We had a few dress up days where our PreSchool learners looked stunning on Valentine's Day, gorgeous in their traditional clothes and very cute in their pyjamas.

A few of our Grade R learners took part in the World Play Day. The soccer matches they participated in were definitely the highlight of the day.

We are blessed to have teachers Terry and Lindy who joined our staff this year. I could not have asked for more hard working and loyal assistants. My thanks go out to them and all the staff for the support and love they give to us and the children.

Warona: I went to the museum but before we went we ate our food..

Phenyu: Yesterday me and my friends went to the museum. I was not scared.

Kananelo: I saw a tiny rex. The at home my mom bought me a jet. The jets name is Dust.

Then I watched TV. Then a Trex ate meat.

Tsebo: I went to the museum with the bus. It was very fun. In the bus we sang.

Rorisang: Yesterday we went with the Grade twos and threes. Then we went in the museum. Then the teacher taught us about Dinosaurs. We learnt very much.

Ruvarashe: Yesterday we went to the museum. Then we saw the Dinosaurs bones.

I had fun and I like the museum.

Pheletso: Yesterday we went to the museum and we learnt about Dinosaurs. We went with my teachers and we went with the bus. The lady showed us pictures and we wet with the Grade 1, 2, 3s. Each one had a chance to look inside the magic Dinosaurs.

Azania: Yesterday we went to the museum and a teacher taught us about dinosaurs. It was very nice. I liked the lesson. The lesson was about bones and bodies. About dinosaurs and it was fun.

Thuto: I went to the museum. We learnt about Dinosaurs. We saw reptiles. I was scared.

Mamello: We went to the museum. T-rex ate meat.

Thando: Yesterday I went to the museum. We learnt about dinosaurs. We learnt about T-rex and we came back with the bus. We went with 2 buses, the grade 1, 2 and 3s.

Mikhail: I saw Dinosaurs. The T-rex killed the big Dinosaurs. Napo was scared of the Dinosaurs. It was like watching a TV. The museum was fun.

Botlhale : Yesterday on Thursday the grade 1, 2 and 3s went to the museum to learn about Dinosaurs. We learnt about T-rex. Then we looked in the little hole. Then we went to the basement. Then we went to look at the museum.

Tshwarahanyo: All of the Grade ones went to the museum. We learnt about Dinosaurs. We did have fun at the Dinosaurs lesson. Then we went back to CBC. Then we had break.

Dimpho: Yesterday we went to the museum and learnt about Dinosaurs. They are meat eaters. The biggest meat eater is a T-rex. It eats a lot of meat.

Nelisiwe: Yesterday we went to the museum.

1.Kefentse Winter Winter is the season that follows Autumn. It says we must get ready for the cold. Winter is very cold so I stay inside my house. I wear my jerseys and jackets when it is cold.

Soccer match The under 9 A soccer team played a match against Brandwag. The ref blew and the match started. Ancoma scored 3 goals. We won the match. CBC won Brandwag 6-1

2.Saano The Picnic I was watching TV when I heard my dad call "Saano, we have a surprise for you." My brother Nsoro and I came rushing down the passage like thunder! My dad told us that we must pack our ball and things to take with on a picnic.

My dad started the engine of the car and we packed all our things in the boot. When we got to the picnic spot Nsoro and I played soccer. Mom called us to eat the snacks. We packed up and came home. We enjoyed the picnic very much.

6.Oratile My friends My friends are Vuyo, Chris, Omphile and Ona. At break my friends and I like to play soccer. In the afternoon we like to play hide and seek. When it gets later we go to day care and we do our homework at day care.

3.Bataung Peter breaks a window Peter was playing with a ball. Peter kicked the ball and it shot like a stone through the window. The window broke into pieces. Peter's father punished him by taking his piggy bank. All his money was used to buy a window. Peter cried in his room.

4.Ebuka The Picnic My family went on a very nice picnic. My mother brought a basket of food and drinks. When we got to our picnic spot my dad helped me to fly a kite. After playing we ate chicken and rice and drank cold drink. After eating the food we had delicious dessert. My sister and I went to look at the bird's nests and we saw a baby bird. After a very nice picnic we went home.

7.Vuyu My best friends My best friends are Ona and Oratile. We like to play in the park. At school we play soccer. Oratile likes to play and forgets to eat his food. They are like cousins to me. We like to play all games together. When we go to the mall we go to the game shop and play games.

8.Azania My story God created me as I am. When I grow up, I want to be a beautiful girl for God. When I pray to God I say to God, “thank you God for creating me and my family.” God is very special to me. My family is also very special to me and I love my family very much.

9.Hlalefo The Picnic My mother decided that we must go on a picnic. Dad drove us to the park. When we got to the park, we packed out all the things from the boot, we threw the blanket open under the shady tree on the grass and set up the umbrella. My dad and I played soccer with the ball. My dad made a fire to braai the meat. We enjoyed the food and drinks. After

eating we packed up all our things and got ready to go home. I thanked mom and dad for a wonderful picnic.

10.Tsakani My best friend My best friend is Naledi Raleting and my name is Tsakani.

She is my best friend because she visits me every Friday.

My mom even lets us wear matching shoes. My mom loves her as much as I love her. We go to the same school, CBC. Our teacher is Mrs. Erlank. She teaches us about God. Her birthday was on 5 August.

11.Thozama My best friend My best friend is Naledi S .She has the same sense of humour as me because we laugh at the same things and love funny jokes. We love each other like sisters. We have a lot in common. We go for keyboard lessons together and help each other. Today she brought her stickers to school and we were playing with it together. She is unique and special to me and that is why she is my best friend. We even exercise together to stay fit.

12.Sechaba My best friends My best friends are Ebuka and Andi. We play together everyday. We like to laugh at funny things and Andi is the one who does funny things, we laugh at his jokes. We teach each other to jive. We like to share our lunch with each other and buy things for each other at the tuck shop.

13.Otsile The Picnic My family went to the river for a picnic. We drove for a long time before we got to the river. We packed out the picnic basket and ate some food because we were hungry. My sister and I walked to the shop to buy ice cream. We played on the grass for a long time. My dad made a fire to braai the meat. After we ate I went to swim in the pool, I swam alone. Later we packed up and went home, I said thank you to my family.

14.Ofentse My favourite food My favourite food is ribs. My mother makes them delicious because it is nice and juicy, sometimes I help her when she is cooking the ribs. My father can also make ribs. I love hot ribs, it must be big ribs because I do not like small ribs.

15.Teboho My best restaurant My best restaurant is the Spur. When there is a birthday party, it is always at the Spur, and I always order Spur ribs.

Poloko's party was at the Spur and it was a lot of fun. My favourite Spur is the Windmill Casino Spur. I am going to have my party at that Spur.

16.Poloko Soccer I love soccer, it is the best game ever. Sometimes I am the wing for our team. Chris is our goal keeper. Hlalefo is the striker and he is a very good striker. Bataung is also a striker on our team. Ebuka is the defender of our team.

When I grow up I want to be a soccer player because I love the game.

17.Akenji My story My name is Akenji. Home is a good place to be because I am safe in my home. I am a human being and God gave me life. I like to watch TV. I love to eat popcorn when I am watching TV. I have a little brother Ade. My brother is very, very, very stubborn. I also have a dog, I love to play with my dog.

18.Naledi Shemane My best friend My best friend's name is Thozama. She is a real good friend to me and I enjoy being with her. We visit each other most Saturday's. Thozama and I are at the same school, we are in the same Grade and we are the same age. We like each other as best friends.

20. Khanya My best friend My friend is Mbali and we want to be the best writers in the magazine. When we grow up to be adults, we going to be smart adults and we going to drive smart cars. I am going to drive a BMW and she is going to drive a Golf.

21. Chris My story I wish I had a dog. I always wanted a dog as a pet. When I get the dog it must still be a puppy so that I can teach it tricks. I will look after my dog and feed it and give it water everyday. I love dogs very much.

22. Lerato The first day of school When I came to school for the first time i was so scared. I saw my friend Otsile and then i was his friend. We played together all the time. I looked for my sister at school, she is also at this school. I liked Grade One, it was the best.

23. Nsoro My favourite sport My favourite sport is soccer. I like to play soccer. I practise with Oratile, we both played in the school's knock out and we won all our matches. I even like playins soccer games on my computer.

24. Sipho A picnic My dad agreed to go on a picnic. My dad, mom, sister and I went on a picnic. Mom packed in food and dad packed in the braai stand. We went to Masselspoort. We had a nice time.

25. Naledi R A Picnic My family and I are having a picnic. My big sister and I play hopscotch. My Mom ,Dad, sister and I are having cake to eat. We pack all our things in the car and go home.

26. Andi Winter Winter is a very cold season. There are no leaves on deciduous trees in Winter. We wear warm clothes.

27. Katleho Road Safety Pedestrians must not walk in the street but on the pavement. Vehicles ride in the street, it is dangerous to play in the street. We must practise road safety every day.

28 Mbali My best friend I have a best friend , her name is Khanya and I live Khanya because she is kind. Khanya is a good girl.

29. Oratile My friends My friends are Vuyo, Chris, Omphile and Ona. During break we like to play soccer. In the afternoon after school we play hide and seek. When it is time for day care we go to class and do our homework.

30. Ona I have a best friend whose name is Vuyo. We are in Grade 2. We love to play together. We like to play with our cars.

31. Kamano Soccer I love to play soccer. My friends and I play soccer every day. We practise on the soccer field. I like it when our team play against Grey College. They beat us 4-0. We are the under 9 B team. We all like the game of soccer.

32. Botlhale (boy) Bataung is the greatest friend I have. He is very energetic and never wants to stop playing. He is very funny. He never makes me angry or sad. I enjoy his company very much because he is interesting. We sometimes ask our moms if we can eat out at the Spur.

Adilah Spring is my favourite season because the flowers and the trees start growing. The birds and butterflies come back to Africa. When I wake up in the morning I hear the birds chattering to each other. In the afternoon we like picking flowers, chasing birds and catching butterflies.

Eze I am very happy because it is Spring. Spring is a beautiful season. It makes me go eat ice cream.

Every year brings new excitement and challenges to the grade 4 class. I appreciate all the eagerness that all of you have shown in wanting to know more and challenging me for information as well.

Our social project for this year has been the Child and Family Care Pre-school in Heidedal. We took cake and potatoes as, they requested. Chips and sweeties are extra special as this is something they do not get very often. The favourite of the little ones is jelly.

In my class we have a lot of fun!! We make jokes most of the time, but when the teacher is out of the class…we talk and talk and then we get punished for it.

One popular punishment for us is staying-in during our break time. The worst punishment happened in Term 1. We had to do push-ups and kneel on the ground with our hands on our heads. Most of the boys took the pain but one cried and the prefect had to give him his blazer to kneel on. The girls just ran around the field for two rounds.

Other than that Grade 5 is very nice.

We love our teacher, Mrs. R…whenever we have a problem, we go to her. Mrs R likes to makes jokes here and there and she takes us on outings which we always enjoy.

2015 has been a difficult one for the Grade 6s. They have had to cope with a new kind of class teacher, a priest, who is teaching them Afrikaans for the first time, and who has been off school due to illness.

They are being taught in a room other than their classroom, which sometimes makes for difficulties when they forget their books.

Grade 6 is also a key year in their development. Last year they were still small children in Grade 5. Next year they will be Secondary School pupils. A lot of maturing has to take place during the Grade 6 year.

All told, I think they have coped rather well with circumstances, and have grown in physical, emotional and intellectual capacity this year. I am very pleased with their progress. There is still a whole term and the December holidays before they return to begin Grade 7 next year. All in all, I am confident that they will be ready for this leap by the time January 2016 arrives.

The grade 7 class is a lively bunch this year full of energy and drive and most of us enjoy them tremendously. There has been a lot of excitement for them in the year so far in terms of a class trip to Hobhouse where they learned some teamwork skills, leadership skills, as well as how to survive High School.

They also had a market day for their EMS subject that they can not stop talking about.

They participated in the school play during the beginning of the year and some of them participated in the Inter-CBC Winter Games hockey and soccer teams.

They are also planning a class play in English. The learners are developing their leadership skills as some of them were chosen to be monitors. There is a junior debating team that also consists of a few of the Grade 7 learners.

All in all we think the Grade 7 class is developing into fine young learners.

We asked some learners to write a short report regarding their experience of Grade 7 this year.

"This being our first year of high school, we were very nervous. There were no teachers that babied us around, but our new class teacher, Mr. van Biljon, helped us to feel at ease with his smiles and jokes. He really likes 'Batman' and has a Batman mug and socks. We as a class support one another as far as possible on and off the sports fields. We have grown throughout the year and found that this mountain we saw in front of us last year is in fact possible to climb."

We wish the Grade 7 class all the best of luck on their journey through the rest of their high school careers.

This year has had its fair share of ups and downs. The first term started with a bang!

We all took part in the athletics and enjoyed running, sprinting and jumping at Tempe's stadium.

We were even more excited to take part in the Inter-CBC, which was hosted on our beautiful school grounds. The Grade 8 boys had the opportunity to act as ball boys and, boy oh boy, did we enjoy every second of it!

As the year progressed, things got a bit harder as we suddenly realised that one must work hard to achieve good grades.

Some subjects will always be a bit more challenging than others, especially Maths, but we now realise if you keep on doing what you've always done, you'll keep on getting what you always got. We are ready to tackle Grade 9 with all its challenges, both in the classroom and on the sports field…

So come on Grade 9! We are ready for the challenge!!

It has been a fairly busy year at the College, between us hosting all three annual InterCBC's and celebrating the school's 75th birthday.

The Grade 9 class however, never lost focus academically. Our principal complimented us on being the strongest class in the school regarding our academics. The news was music to Mr. Daly's ears, who always thrives for his class to do well.

Our trip to Zastron earlier in the year was very successful. We managed to break the record, which set us apart from all the other classes. Zastron helped the class to unite. I was truly amazed by the amount of spirit and team work our class had instilled in each other. The scars, scratches and bruises from the trip are reminders of one of the most memorable trips that we will always cherish.

We decided as our outreach activity to raise funds for the training of guide dogs for the blind. The fund raising started by inviting Luzanne Coetsee and their black labrador retriever, Oakley, to visit the school and interact with the learners. The Guide dogs association of SA is the organisation we are supporting.

At the moment we are still very actively trying to raise money. We are thankful for the opportunity to reach out and do good for others, as this is the ethos of our college.

We believe in the saying 'it is better to give that to receive'.

As the year draws to an end we prepare ourselves for the exams that will determine our fate in the FET phase. I am hopeful that our class will continue being creative, ambitious and bright.

It is only natural that learners would start a new year with great expectations. This is so much more applicable to the grade 10 class who enters upon the last and final phase of their schooling.

The lure of the senior years, the wonder of growing up manifested in all aspects of your life and the glimmer of the future on the horizon, make this school phase all the more appealing and challenging.

Soon, however, reality strikes. You are inundated by responsibilities. Valentine's ball, the Big Walk, athletics, not to mention the real reason for being at CBC. Just as you start realising the momentous task, it is the end of the first term and you literally deflate after the CBC Extravaganza.

Within two weeks you take up your burden because you know that you

neglected school work in the frenzy of just getting to everything. Now ParentPupil-Counselling looms like a monster of prodigious proportions as the truth of not being equipped enough for the brilliant future that you have envisaged for yourself.

Another reality, less palatable, yet very, very real: SUBJECT CHANGES. The rest of the year progresses at its steady pace. Can you keep up? You need to remind yourself that you no longer set the pace, the pace of life is driving you.

You cannot stand still because it is not an option. This is when the third reality strikes: In life we can only go in one of two ways; forward or backward.

Wonder how all those generations before me seemed to have made it?

Up to now it has been a bumpy, but exciting journey. Being in Grade 11 is like entering a New World! It comes with trials and tribulations such as the work load increasing and marks decreasing. We stood together as a unit and used the motto that states: The surest way not to fail is determination to succeed academically.

The tasks that we were given, such as raising funds for the Matric Farewell and doing the waitressing at the Bingo Evening, were challenging and we learnt to work as a team and with determination.

On a more positive note: We are proud of Ntombi Jacobs and Palesa Seate that were chosen for the Free State hockey team as well as Vuyo Mbelekane that received a sports tie at the Inter-CBC for soccer.

As the year goes on, we as a class will have to face the challenges of being the leaders for 2016.

With the support of our teachers and fellow pupils we will make it!

Bitter sweet moments…

As a Grade 12 scholar you are always asked what you will be studying next year, which institution you will be studying at or even why you insist on leaving your parents all alone (only child problems). However, no one ever asks you what you will miss the most about your school…I chose to answer the latter.

I will miss 1. Mrs Van Zijl and het emphasis on how one should be kind, loving and sharing; 2. Mrs Erlank and her ever so happy persona; 3. Mrs Korff's gentle, yet stern approach to discipline; 4. Mrs de Necker's enthusiasm, whether there were 2 members or 200 members present at ERS that day, she never gave up on ERS; 5. Mrs Giani, if it wasn't for her, I wouldn't own a dictionary;

During the late 1930's Catholic education for boys was in the hands of the Marist Brothers. They found that their school was not viable and a long negotiation between the Bloemfontein Catholic community and the Christian Brothers of Ireland began.

Eventually it was decided that the Christian Brothers would open a boy's school in Bloemfontein. Portion of the original Bayswater farm with its historic farm house built in 1901 was bought to develop the school which would be under the patronage of St Joseph.

In 1939 work began on the building of the school. Brothers Enright and Noonan were sent to oversee the development and building. On the 2nd February 1940 the school officially opened. During the following 75 years 61 Brothers educated the boys of all faiths of Bloemfontein. 10 Principals have been in charge over this time.

Thomson 1973 – 1976 Brother Mark Hallessey 1977 – 1979 Brother Chris Wise 1980 – 1985 Mr Ernie Alter 1986 – 1998 Mr. Wally Borchard 1998 – Present Over the past 75 years St. Josephs' has changed from an all white boy's school run by brothers and a few lay teachers, to a multiracial co-ed school run by lay teachers.

The Catholic and Christian brothers' ethos is maintained by the dedication of the principal and teachers.

The first 10 years (1940 – 1949) saw the building of the basic school starting with grade 3 (Std. 1) to grade 9 (Std. 7) in 1940 with the first matric class of 4 in 1943.

The doors opened with 54 pupils. Classes were given in the brothers' house until building was completed in August 1940.

The school, house and chapel were blessed by the Archbishop on 26 October 1940.

Participation in sport began in earnest in 1942. Cricket, swimming, tennis and boxing were initial sports offered with soccer coming in 1944. The first swimming gala took place in 1943.

On the cultural side, Boy scouts started in 1942 and in 1943 the production of a Gilbert and Sullivan Pirates of Penzance. This was followed by HMS Pinafore in 1944 and The Mikado in 1945 both in the City hall. There was also annual participation in the Festival of Music dance and song.

Space for children became a problem and teaching took place in the house. More property was bought in that 6 Erven were bought for £2 400 with a loan from Pretoria.

In 1949 there were 162 boys taught by six brothers and 5 lay teachers. Included among the lay teachers was Mr. T. Raine who was responsible for the St. Josephs' CBC Anthem. He resigned for health reasons at the end of the year.

Finances were an ongoing problem which was alleviated by the school becoming state aided in 1946. To help make ends meet the brothers grew vegetables and kept chickens. Brother Power also kept bees.

1950 – 1959.

Brother Conleth Levins is still principal.

This decade started with the planting of 200 pine trees on the grounds.

The roll was 156 boys.

The school was again active in sport and during this deca+de continued with the previous decade's sports and now included soccer. On the cricket front St. Josephs' cricket team beat St. Andrews first team in 1951.

Hockey was introduced in 1959. The school began to grow. A new bedroom was added to the house. This room build onto the kitchen by Brother Mc Guire cost very little.

Tenders for 3 new class rooms and the swimming pool were called for and work began during January and February 1952 respectively. The class rooms being taken into communion on 30 July. During 1953 a second set of 3 classes were to be built by Mr. Alec Donaldson. The building began at the end of April. Fund raising for change rooms at the swimming pool gets underway.

Lighting at the pool and low board were installed. New tennis courts are planned and work starts. New classrooms proposed by new principal Brother Sylvester Power were not approved. This was eventually approved and works on the new class rooms and toilet block began in August.

During 1957 a bicycle shed was built from scrap material. Nearly 200 boys cycled to school each day. A shed for storing equipment and machinery was built in 1959.

Academically 1952 saw the introduction of Sub A and Sub B (Grade 1 and 2). They were moved from the brother's dining room to the new class rooms. On the cultural scene Pirates of Penzance was again produced in 1951.

In 1958 Brother Levins resumes duties as principal.

1960 – 1969.

During this decade there were three principals. Brother Levins to the end of 1963, Brother J.C. Nutty (1964 – 1968) and Brother Dinny Horan in 1969. The roll at the beginning of 1960 was 371.

The sport scene remained the same with a lot of attention given to swimming. During 1962 some of the boys became involved in a rowing club which was not officially part of the schools extra mural activities. The team won the S.A. School championship in East London. This was the highest honour the team could obtain.

Due to the increase in the number of boys more Brothers were needed. To accommodate them four new bedrooms and an ablution block were added to the main house. The Archbishop assisted by providing OMI Brother Bormacher to do the building. During 1962 a Sport pavilion was planned and a donation of R2,000 was made by Mrs. Jones in memory of her son.

There was a proposal made for the erection of a boarding hostel and the Knights of da Gama were approached for assistance to build a science block. Strong water was found and an irrigation system obtained.

Cricket nets were erected by Mr. Crawford.

During 1965 the 25th Anniversary was celebrated but it was a hard year financially and necessitated 25% hike in school fees in 1966. The government grant also increased but the hike in fees had a dramatic effect on the roll which dropped by 20 boys. 1967 saw the production of the first school magazine, 1968 the first mention of a matric farewell and in 1969 the plans for a hostel were scrapped.

1970 - 1979.

This decade also saw three principals.

Brother Tony Price (1970 – 1972).

Brother J. W. Thompson (1973 – 1976) and Brother Mark Hallessey (1977 – 1979). The decade began with a roll of 306 but due to various factors this dropped to 220 in 1975 and 200 in 1979.

There was a lot of development with the Army building an armoury and Stocks & Stocks donating the shooting range (1972).

A garden with grass, trees and still existing stone path was built to the tuck shop (1973). The proposed science block was begun in August 1975 as an owner builder project. Keith Elliott, Claude Muller and Derek Davis were very involved in the project. The building was completed in 1976.

Rice House was moved to Boksburg and the Park road Property sold. A section of ground was sold to Greenhill Convent in 1970 for R75,000 payable over two years.

Another portion of land was sold to Mrs. Weisner. In 1972 Greenhill Convent was officially opened on the 21st of October. In 1973 the Christian Brothers office in Rome gave permission for limited co-education with Greenhill. The brothers and sisters moved between schools. Maths, Science, Biology and Accounting were subjects permitted. In 1979 Brother Hallissey was called to Greenhill to hear the news that Greenhill was closing at the end of 1980.

This was a happening that really caused much emotional turmoil in the Catholic community. Keith Elliot called for a co-ed school, others for a Diocesan school, others to keep status quo. The trend was that numbers attending Catholic schools were declining. The department of Education became interested in the Greenhill property.

In 1978 St. Josephs' has its first black pupil, R. Kgoleng, a son of a diplomat.

1980 – 1989.

This decade has two principals Brother Chris Wise (1980 – 1986) and an all CBC first, the first lay Principal Mr. Ernie Alter (1986 – 1998). The year begins with 202 pupils with 20 pupils from the nearby establishment pre- school. The beginning of this period was dominated by a fight for survival. The closure of Greenhill and the negative feeling of the Brothers' General council met with the keen and determined

efforts of the Bloemfontein Parishioners and Brother Chris Wise. Many letters went back and forth between South Africa, Ireland and even Australia. Eventually provisional permission was granted for co-ed Standards 8 – 10 i.e. grade 10 – 12.

Eventually on the 31st of October 1981 final approval for a co-ed system was given.

St. Josephs' opened the door and led the way for the other CBC's which soon followed. In 1981 the roll was 225 with 22 girls and this increased to 247 in 1982 with 46 girls and 22 pre-schoolers. There was new confidence in CBC. The next challenge taken on by Brother Chris Wise was for a multiracial CBC. The school buildings were static. Events such as Prize giving, and Matric farewells were held at other venues or in the Quad.

This gave rise to thoughts of our own hall.

Much planning, fund raising and sale of land, later a new hall was completed at a cost of R215,000 in November 1985. Mr. Frikkie Siebert, a parent, donated R65,000 of this amount. The Quad also underwent a face lift with the planting of squares of shrubs and a fountain. Attempts were now being made to buy the Greenhill property as the whole infrastructure was more modern.

Nothing, however, came of this as the state was not interested. The brother's house was revamped to accommodate pre-school classes with special ablution facilities for little people. The official opening took place in 1989.

Toward the end of 1986 Ernie Alter announced that with effect from 1987 St. Josephs' would become fully multiracial. A number of people moved their children but this was counted by an inflow of a number of Indian children.

In 1989 adult education classes begin at night. REA foundation sponsors this and Mrs. Marlene Webber takes control of it.

A bell tower was built in the circle to be used on certain ceremonial occasions such as welcoming new staff and pupils and on Remembrance Day At the end of the decade there are 266 pupils on the roll.

1990 – 1999.

Ernie Alter remains principal until September 1998. Mr. Wally Borchard is appointed principal. The decade begins

with 286 pupils and ends with 394. With the multiracial co-ed system, CBC's type of Christian orientated education is in demand.

1990 is the Golden Jubilee of St. Josephs'.

Many events are organised and memorabilia such as wines, glasses and ties are available. 25 new trees were planted, one tree for each 2 years of existence. It also symbolises hope and faith in the future. The pre-school outgrew its castle room attached to the back of the school and took over half of the brother's house between 1988 and 1990. Two bedrooms were converted to provide a kitchen and a dining room for the brothers.

During the past fifty years the Religious Education in the school was done by the Christian Brothers. As the number of brothers decreased, Brother Michael Burke spent about two years in the 80's preparing an R E manual which was called CORD. This was to become to the handbook for R E in Catholic schools served by a multi denominational lay staff. St. Josephs' has and continues to use C O R D as the guideline for the team teaching. We have relied heavily on support from the Sacred Heart Cathedral for our regular school Masses. Fathers John Nolan, Leo Roche, Sean Hynes, Father Ernest, Father Sixtus all of the OMI have always been available for saying Mass for us. In 1991 Mrs. June Assheton-Smith becomes the religious educator co-ordinator in the primary school.

The Golden Jubilee year saw a wellproduced Razzle Dazzle which involved all teachers and pupils of the school. Large matric boys doing ballet to the music of Swan Lake was one item. There were other talent nights and in 1995 the matric class and matric teachers did Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Other cultural events were involved during the period. Junior City council, Debating, Chess and a number of clubs such a Nature bugs and Prolife and ERS. Scouting reached a peak with 5 Springbok scouts in one year and a Chief scout award the next year. School driver education was done by Wally Borchard and Pam van Zijl. Cadets and Jazz gym also played a role in the lives of CBC pupils.

Our annual participation in the Eisteddfod yields good results.

In 1992 two happenings of significance was the introduction of the computer centre in

the old geography class. The brother's house became vacant with Brother Price going to Kimberley and Brother Greg Kennedy and Dinny Horan going to Bochabela.

On the academic scene the 1996 matrics gained 22 distinctions. A Hotel and Catering class came into being under Mrs. Antionette Steenkamp. A number of classes such as grade 7 were doubled to provide bridging. A day care class was introduced for juniors to do homework in.

1996 saw a great celebration with the Beatification of Edmund Rice. 1997 Marked 100 years of the Christian Brothers in Africa with the Kimberley CBC centenary. In September 1998 Mr. Ernie Alter retired and Mr. Wally Borchard became principal.

2000 – 2009 2000 Sixty years of St. Joseph's . The Diamond Jubilee was celebrated in November. The roll at the beginning of the year was 391, a growth of 624% from 1940 in spite of some really hard years.

There was a lot of staff movement during this decade with up to four teachers leaving and four new appointments in one year.

2001 Saw Mrs.Reid officially retire from grade 1 after 25 years only to be back on the staff in another role almost the next day.

2002 was a significant year for the Christian Brothers. It marked the 200 year Anniversary of Edmund Rice opening his school at Mount Sion in 1802.

Academically St. Josephs' had a grand decade. In 2002 there were 31 matric distinctions with Yao Hung Ou producing our best matric results with 100% for Mathematics, 96% Accounting and 93% Sciences. In 2004, 2005 and 2006 we were in the top 50 schools in the Free State and 8th in the province in 2007. 2009 Marked our 22nd consecutive year of a 100% matric pass rate. Science Expo's have been held annually to encourage science and engineering.

On the cultural side a very wide variety of activities are participated in. Girl guide Boitumelo Tlhakanelo achieving Chief Challenge Award in 2002. E.R.S, Nature Bugs, Eisteddfod, Drum Majorettes, Debating, Inter house plays and public speaking being some but, not all the activities. During this decade some sports

were phased out. In 2004 cricket was dropped because of a certain amount of pupil resistances and lack of experienced coaches. Tennis also fell away as the upkeep and maintenance of courts was high and due to lack of interest in sport.

Swimming became a life skill. The main sports are boys soccer and girls hockey.

The annual Inter house Athletics is still a big event.

2000 heralded the beginning of a new venture. Due to lack of public transport St. Josephs' invested in two used 20 seater buses. This enabled CBC to provide much needed transport to outlying areas. The buses had to be increase on size and grew to a 36 seater and a 65 seater. In 2001 the old swimming pool officially became a storage dam and the new life skills pool was built. The pre-school underwent some renovation. A new bus was bought in 2006.

The old Brother Hayden, past pupil memorial and old bell arch were demolished and eventually new memorials were built on the circle and a new bell tower and covered walkway to the office built. In 2008 there was a near disaster when the grade 2 class caught fire. Fortunately it did not cause too much damage or spread. Two new prefab classrooms were built in 2008 as well as parking garage for the staff.

Mr. Borchard was requested to speak to the heads of independent schools and Umalusi.

The topic “Why does CBC work?”. The answer as explained to them could summarised in one word “Caring”.

2010 – 2015.

This decade began with 447 pupils on the roll, this peaked at our all time record of 460 in 2012. This year we stand at 445 for the year.

Long time ground staff member Gert Meko retired in 2010.

Academics remained good with a bronze at the Science Expo and a 5th in the province for the Maths Olympiad. Again 100% matric pass rate. In 2011 our matrics achieved a Gold Award for 100% pass in 3 specified categories. Pupils were invited to Potchefstroom University for a Science Expo and Convention. 2012 saw another Gold award for a 100% pass rate. Lindiwe Kers was given a SANRAL bursary. 2013 Sonwabile Sigenu achieve 5th in provincial

Maths Olympiad and aim 100% pass. 2014 again sees a 100% matric pass. 2015 saw teachers undergoing training in the use of Tablets to implement modern teaching technology.

2010 saw great achievement by our schools debating. The debating team won the provincial competition. Tshepang Africa was selected for the South African team in the New York Model United Nations debate.

There was a lot of musical activity with the African choir, Bloemfontein Children's choir and the Eisteddfod. Cris Moncur led a group on a European tour. A Geography tour group went to Kimberley and in 2013 Wally Borchard took a group on a tour of Thailand. During 2011 the chess team moved up a league to the B league.

Sport The girls hockey did well in 2010. Three girls each in Free State U18 A, B and C and 1 in U16 A. Boy's soccer won the U19 Inter CBC. World cup year. In 2011 three girls

made it into CBC national team while four boys made the soccer team. In 2013 three girl's teams made it to the play o in their league and one girl to each of Free State U18 A, B and C team. For a number of years our girls have participated in the Inter CBC Netball competition.

Infrastructure In 2011 two new prefab class rooms were built. In 2015 the whole main building was redone with Slate as the plaster was pulling away from the underlying face brick. Other jobs done in this decade and half was the paving of quad and veranda. The old ranch style fence was replaced with a chain link fence and then devils fork fencing. Since 1984 Spring day is celebrated by the planting of a tree for each year's grade 1 class.

We now look forward to the next 75 years with the ďŹ rm faith that the Holy Spirit will continue to guide us forward as in the past 75 years.

BRIDGE BUILDING AND AQUALIBRIUM COMPETITION

The Grade 10 and 11 classes represented CBC at the annual competition hosted by SAICE- South African Institute of Civil Engineering. The challenge took place on the 9th of May at Loch Logan Waterfront.

The Aqualibrium Competitions teach learners about distribution of water. All ďŹ fteen learners had a lot of fun and were perfect ambassadors for CBC.

GEOLOGY EXCURSION Mr van Biljon took 3 learners from Grade 9 to the Geology department at UFS. They were involved in a game where they had to identify various rocks. They were then taken to the Planetarium on Naval Hill to watch a cinematic presentation named: A Walk Through the Universe.

During the second term, learners were required to create science projects for Physical Sciences. An external judge then came to the school to observe and choose the most promising projects to be displayed and be given an opportunity to take our projects to the next level. .Many schools from in and around Bloemfontein had their projects displayed at the University of the Free State for the regional competition.

After school, on the 13th of August, the four groups that were selected left to set up our projects at the University.

The next day we had to be at the

University to answer questions from the judges. We were required to wear normal clothes and not school uniform to prevent bias judgements. We had a great time socialising and waiting to be interviewed. The time arrived for prize giving on Saturday and unfortunately nobody from our school won medals.

We all had a fantastic time and met great people. The experience really served as motivation to do well and also showed us how tough the competition out there really is.

We had a super hockey season! The girls really tried hard in their practices and matches. We can be very proud of our girls.

They behaved very well each time they played a match or entered a festival. They were well mannered and were good ambassadors for our school.

Mrs. Van Huyssteen, has once again had the immense task of teaching the Grade 1 girls how to participate in a match. There are some talented players amongst them and this year she managed to put two teams

together. Some girls need to put greater eort and dedication into their practices and games in order to assist the hard workers in achieving success.

It has been a successful season for the U14 hockey team this year. Although we lost one match, we still managed to make it to the semi-ďŹ nals of the league. It was a tough match, but with determination and a strong desire to win we are now the proud winners of the league!

The U14 girls, we would like toe thank Coach Geraldo for always being there for us and helping us to be the best hockey players that we could possibly be!

Just a short note from the U16 hockey girls, who also ended up right at the top of our league! At times it was a bit scary to play against some of the other teams, who come from bigger schools, but we played with lots

of heart and passion for the game and we enjoyed every second of it! We are very fortunate that we didn't have any serious injuries this year‌.just a few scratches and bruises! We would like to thank Coach Nigel and Miss Pretorius for all their help, because without them we would not have been able to win the U16B league.

And last but not least, the U18 hockey girls came third in their league! This indicates that with hard work, dedication and a supporting team anything is possible.

We appreciate all the encouragement, support and motivation given to us by Coach Michelle and Mrs. Miennie. It truly is a privilege to be part of the CBC family!

The grade 10 learners who had been chosen for the netball ďŹ rst team were Thato, Bonolo Moloi, Wendy, Faith and I. Faith and I were new to the family, so we had to go through initiation and I have to say, it was not quite what I had expected. To add on to all our stress, we had to wear dummies at the opening mass and throughout the whole tournament, which was rather embarrassing. In spite of losing to other teams, we were still happy because we received lunch every day, so nothing seemed to be so

bad. I learned many things in the netball tournament from both my team mates and the coach. Even though we would sometimes bump heads, at the end of the day, we worked as a team and we enjoyed the challenge of playing in a tournament. I could not have asked for a better team and I am thankful for every moment we shared as a team. My team mates managed to make my ďŹ rst time an unforgettable experience. I cannot wait for next year.

As always the Junior soccer season started off in April with a five-a-side tournament hosted at CBC. All our A teams namely u/9, u/11 and u/13 reached the knockout stages.

Our u/9s went all the way and unfortunately lost in the finals.

The league matches took place on Tuesday afternoons and our teams always proved to be stiff competition for their opponents. It was always pleasing to note how the skill level of our young players has developed and how much confidence they have gained throughout the season. CBC boys always try their best and really love their soccer making it so much easier for the coaches.

We hosted the Inter CBC Winter Festival this year and our u/13s once again did us proud with the fighting spirit they displayed.

Other highlights of the season were the annual derby against St. Andrews, Welkom and our trip to Wepener to participate in their sport day. These outings were most enjoyable and we recorded some big wins.

A sincere word of thanks must go to all our coaches, managers, refs and supporters for yet another successful season.

This we had a great year celebrating our 75th Jubilee. Our soccer teams did very well although organizing still needs to improve with the league and competitions.

The u/15 team played only one match and the rest were friendlies, in which they did very well.

The u/17 team, with a new team manager, had an outstanding year. Although they couldn't qualify for Engen Knockout earlier this year, they played amazing soccer. They played well in the Syrac league competing against big schools and made it through to the semi-final, where they drew against Brebner, beating Louis Botha (HTS) and other schools.

We are proud of you boys!

Our 1st team also played one competition: the Kay Motsepe Cup and some friendlies and

derbies, which were a good warm up for our annual Inter CBC Tournament.

As we were the hosts this year, we had to show good soccer skills during the Inter CBC Tournament. The boys worked very hard during the practise sessions and friendly games we played this year.

Making the selections are always difficult, but having coach Gopolang and coach Tefo, it was easy to choose the best squad for the Inter CBC. The boys played very well during the tournament and made it to the semi-final.

Unfortunately we couldn't make it to the final and we came fourth overall .We held our heads up high and carried the CBC St. Joseph's Bloemfontein flag high.

Well done to Vuyo Mbelekane and Mohapi Maema for being chosen to represent the SA CBC TEAM. On behalf of the College I would like to thank the u/17 coach, Gopolang, and the u/15 coach, Tefo, as well as all soccer coaches, the hockey and netball coaches for all their efforts to make CBC children competitive on the sports fields.

The past three terms have been an exciting and very pleasing adventure. To have the opportunity to teach music from Grade R to Grade 11 was daunting at ďŹ rst, but such a good stepping stone and positive challenge.

To see the children grow in their talents is the most precious thing in life to experience.

Amongst the 50 odd music pupils, students participate in Piano, Violin, Recorder, Keyboard and music theory.

In my classroom I do not have a teacherpupil approach but rather a musician to musician approach. Children learn through active learning and therefore I try to incorporate games and fun activities while learning the instrument.

Their hard work and dedication was presented at this year's 49th Annual Eisteddfod. The Eisteddfod oers music

pupils the opportunity to perform in public, showcasing their abilities and hard work.

This enables them to get exposure to perform in front of an audience and receive recognition.

CBC entered 40 Pupils who participated in Singing, Piano and Recorder. The highest symbol awarded went to Pendo Masinde in Grade 5, for piano, with an A++. It goes without saying that practice makes perfect.

Practicing is not always fun, but I can guarantee that the rewards are so much greater than one thinks. I wish to thank the parents for all the support as well as for giving each pupil the opportunity to experience this beautiful musical path in life.

This year our junior debating teams were very enthusiastic and it was a wonderful privilege to coach such an eager bunch.

There were quite a few wins and also best speakers. Some were 'thrown in the deep end' and had to debate with very little coaching.

They debated at Brebner High School, Grey College, Saint Andrews and Eunice. We were able to take two junior teams of three each to the debates. Our B team was able to go through to the semi-ďŹ nals at the SACEE debating league but unfortunately lost that debate. It was, however, a wonderful opportunity to learn about how things work at that level.

I certainly hope to continue with the junior debating next year because this is a skill the children learn for life.

This year has been a very successful year for debating at CBC. The learners have been exposed to many dierent leagues and this in turn helped to build their conďŹ dence as well as getting to know learners from other schools in Bloemfontein and even across the country.

It was such a pleasant experience to be able to work with these learners and to see their dedication, commitment and hard-work that they put in to each debate.

For those learners that were not able to take part in the debating itself, they were given the opportunity to be student adjudicators, timekeepers or chairpersons.

Inter CBC Debating As this was my first year of experiencing debating, it started off with a bang. The very first term we hosted the Inter-CBC tournament. Two of our teams participated in the debating and our A team made it through to the Semi-Final round where they debated against Bulowayo and we were placed 2nd in this competition. What an achievement!

It was a very enjoyable tournament and definitely a good start to the debating season.

St. Andrew's Debating tournament We also participated in the St. Andrew's Debating Tournament that consisted of a series of unprepared debates. The learners took part in six rounds on the Friday afternoon and throughout the Saturday.

Opportunities like this are always welcome as the learners are exposed to many different topics that are relevant to what is happening in the world today. Our B team made it through to the Quarter final round for this competition.

The SACEE Debating was a huge success this year. Our B team made it through to the Quarter final round and ended up in 3rd place for the competition. It made it all worth it to see how excited each learner was for the next round and when we got there, the CBC learners definitely stood out among the other schools.There was always a buzz of excitement and laughter at the competition.

Debating plays an important role in the development of the learners as they are taught about self-discipline, selfconfidence and the importance of being able to think outside of the box. It was very enlightening to see how the learners grew throughout the year and the support that they had from their friends.

Model United Nations The highlight of the debating year was taking part in the Model United Nations Provincial Competition. Two of our Grade 11 learners, Kamogelo Gaborone and Thabiso Maja, as well as Lebogang and Zanele from Tsoseletso Secondary School, put in hours of extra work. They gave up their afternoons, weekends and even their holiday in order to do research and preparation for the big day. It was refreshing to see so much dedication and effort from learners. This could not have been done without the help of Jared Sukhdaven, our coach. After months of preparation, the day arrived for the debate to take place. The team looked very smart with their Bulgarian pins and green ties that were made for them.

The team did extremely well and was placed 3rd in the Free State. You were true ambassadors for CBC and made the school very proud!!

CBC joined the Bloemfontein Senior School's Chess League this year. We only entered an U/17B team and we played our matches on a Wednesday afternoon at Grey College Senior School.

Our six players showed tremendous spirit and enthusiasm. They tackled every match with a positive attitude and had very good results.

Although they are still very inexperienced, they will have much more conďŹ dence next year. We hope to have much more chess players next year so that we can enter U/15 teams as well.

Girls are also encouraged to join our chess club.

I want to thank these six young gentlemen for their excellent behaviour and discipline. They made us proud and were an example of the type of behaviour one can expect from CBC learners.

I haven't been in the ERS for long but I know that I love it. It is a family who tries to make anyone and everyone comfortable. They treat you equally. It is truly a society for others to build and love each other.

-T Setlhare ERS has been a wonderful experience as I was able to develop positively as a person. This society helped me to become compassionate and quite empathetic towards others. ERS also gave me the chance to contribute towards alleviating social problems and helping those in need. It has been wonderful and I hope to carry the lessons I learned with me.

-David Senoge ERS has taught me to live fully. I am so much more selfless, more hopeful and less selfish. I have learned how valuable life really is and how we have to treasure every moment of our lives. I am grateful for everything I can call mine, I do not regret joining ERS -Tsholofelo Moremi Live Jesus in our hearts forever. It has been a great pleasure being part of the ERS family. I have learnt a lot throughout the 3 years that I have been in the ERS. It has truly boosted my confidence and self esteem. I've turned out to be a better person now than I was back then. I was very fortunate to have been part of the whole experience and many thanks to Mrs Janelle de Necker.

ERS has been a journey of self-discovery for me.

Not only did I learn about myself but I also learned about God through other young teenagers. Love, kindness and compassion are values I saw in all the ERS members. I will take this with me when I leave and will forever cherish the experiences we shared.

It's been the only place where I felt at home, loved and useful. It was a tremendous honour to have been selected as part of the committee and I can honestly say that the ERS is the place to be. Thank you, Mrs de Necker, for your eternal passion for the society.

It is with so much pride that I am once again able to write about the ERS SA Rally as well as the Saint Josephs' society. There is no other school that has the privilege to say that we belong to an international network of Christian Brothers' Colleges.

Our rally was extended this year so that we can do more outreach work at Assissi and get more involved with the local community. For many a city learner this was their first hands on experience in a dairy as well as counting cows in the veld. Not to even mention the physical work that we were able to do at the centre.

“Teaching is also not as easy as it very often looks, Ma'am” was some of the remarks made when one and all had to teach in a specific grade. It was a wonderful weekend with many memories and emotions shared that can only happen where the Spirit of God is present.

Our own Stay- awake night was extremely successful and very well organized by the committee. Thank you to all the members who were prepared to share personal and very emotional feelings and experiences with all present.

If it were not for dedicated members, who are always prepared to give their time willingly on a Friday afternoon, there will not be an ERS Society.

Our Outreach for this year is the Poloho School for mentally and physically challenged children. Here we were given some insight into the world of the autistic child, as well as those whose mothers drank or used drugs while expecting them. Despite their circumstances they are some of the happiest children I have met.

To the team of 2015, especially Khanyisa, Rethabile, Tammy and Amantle, and all the matrics, you have left deep footprints in our society and wonderful memories in our hearts!!

I can honestly say that the following words are true about each one of you: Happiness is to be found only in the home Where God is loved and honoured, Where each one loves, and helps, And cares for the others.
