Our Vision is to guide our learners to shape a new tomorrow
YEARBOOK 2012

Principal’s Report THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS This body under the very capable leadership of Mr. Darron Ferraris, gives me great support throughout the year. These are the people who give of their time freely, to attend meetings once a month. They all share one common goal, namely the good of St.Joseph's CBC. Thank you for your hard work and dedication. I would like to make a special reference to Mr. Darron Ferraris, who despite facing increasing work pressures still finds the time to help run the school Sir your loyalty is scarce and is much appreciated by all the people involved with our school. May the good Lord above repay you for your loyalty. THE PARENT TEACHERS ASSOCIATION Mr. Richard Kuduga has been a willing chairperson for a number of years now. His focus is to obtain more parent involvement, as he feels that it is an integral part of their children's education. I would like to once again emphasise that all the parents are members of this association, not just the loyal members who attend the meetings, reach decisions and form the backbone of the fundraising. I therefore challenge you as parents to become more involved with the events at CBC. This does not mean putting your hand in your pocket, but it means the general attendance at PTA functions. Let us see more family days where the main goal is that we meet each other and make new friends. We thank Mr. Richard Kuduga and his committee for working hard throughout the year. The parent participation is definitely on the rise ACADEMIC RESULTS We were once again awarded the Gold Award by the Department of Basic Education, having once again achieved a 100% pass. This takes our 100% to 25 consecutive years. Not a bad achievement when one takes into consideration the amount of change this school has undergone in those years. I am very confident that the present class will continue the proud CBC tradition. Tshepang Afrika: 3 distinctions (Science, Accounting, Life Sciences) In total the class of 26 produced, 20 Bachelor passes and 6 school leaving certificates. Between them they produced 12 A's and 29 B's. These achievements speak volumes for the learners’ and the teachers’ dedication. The other grades strived hard to achieve their maximum potential and the school achieved an overall pass rate of 99 %. CULTURE Mrs. Louise Malherbe and Mrs. Karen Vorster work hard to prepare our learners for the annual Eisteddfod. In the music department they try very hard to follow CBC's ethos, being that of participation and exposure to as many events as possible, in that way the learner's talents can be realized. We are the school that enters the most participants namely 42 in the music section and 50 learners in the singing section. Despite this practice we still achieve good quality results 2 A++, 9 A+ and the rest achieving either an A or a B. CBC is also well represented in the World known Bloemfontein's Children Choir, with no less than 10 learners in the choir. SPORT The majority of sport played at CBC has to compete on the same level as schools with far greater numbers. Although we did not manage to win any leagues this year (all 3 senior girls hockey teams were involved in playoffs) we can still stand proud with some of the achievements obtained this year. HOCKEY Gomolemo Mochoari U18 A, Refiloe Thekiso U18B, Refiloe Mangoejane & Jade Scott U18C were selected to represent the

Free State at Hockey. Gomolemo and Rethabile were again selected for the SACBC team with a new inclusion this year of Lulama Mokuni. A tournament in which our girls always give a good account of themselves. SOCCER The U15 Team were the losing semi-finalists in a National schools tournament organized by Brebner high School. The U17 team were also losing semi-finalists in The Metropolitan cup. The U9's and U11's did exceptionally well this year, with the U11's ending the season undefeated. The under 13's were only beaten in one game by CBC Boksburg at the recent winter festival games. This team has probably shown the most improvement throughout the year. Well done boys. The U19 team lost with penalties against the eventual winners Pretoria CBC, then going on to beat our rival Catholic School comprehensively in the 3rd fourth play-offs. Napo Modise, Ketso Nkholise and Khayalethu Mlonyeni were all reselected for the SACBC team while Kholisile Nyongwane was awarded his SACBC colours for the first time. ATHLETICS Probably the sport at CBC that unites and creates the most spirit amongst us as a school. This is also the only sport where we end up competing against ALL other athletics in the Free State. For us to even have a person qualifying for the Free State Championship in Sasolburg is a great honour. Here I must congratulate Mofenyi who qualified for the U19 Long Jump, as well Keabetsoe Moseou who qualified for the U12 100m events. NETBALL This is a sport that we practise for about 3 weeks just before the Inter CBC tournament. This year saw us drawing our first match and then surpassing that by winning our very first game. Well done girls. Mamello Gill was also selected for the SACBC netball team. EDUCATION As parents you can rest assured that your children are in the caring, dedicated and qualified hands of our teachers, from preschool through to matric. The educational policies of the country are in a continual state of change. This places an increasing amount of pressure on educators and learners alike as we move from the known, safe and secure, to the unknown. As educators we seem to be bombarded with new acronyms on a daily basis, OBE, CTA, CASS,LF, are the old ones already. We will therefore see that the amount of meetings that staff attend to be trained and informed and to be kept up to date with the changes is greatly increased. There always seems to be a teacher away attending a meeting. Personally I think that with the new CAPS system that we are moving in the right direction again. There seems to be more structure again and the natural progression of learning makes far more sense that the previous NCS system. Let's hope that we all embrace the new system for the sake of our children's education. One thing we must never lose sight of, is that our learners must be continually motivated, both by educators and parents, to deliver a high standard work. We must not fall into the trap of accepting the minimum requirements in order to secure a pass. Lindiwe Kers is the first CBC learner to be awarded a SANRAL bursary, this is a full bursary. To come into reckoning for this bursary she had to achieve at least a 76% average for English Mathematics and science. Sonwabile and Katiso were also amongst the TOP 50 learners who wrote the Free State SASOL th Olympiad, with Sonwabile being placed 5 in the province. A number of our learners also participated in a number of Olympiads, some of these are ongoing. Currently a number of learners go to the Free State university every week to receive extra coaching in both mathematics and science.
Principal’s Report Our pre-school, headed by Mrs. Mary-Lou Sullivan, is instilling a sense of organisation and control into the little ones, preparing them very capably for the BIG school. She is ably assisted by Mrs. Wondera van Huuysteen and Martha Phandle, both of whom are always well prepared and bring a lot of creativity and love into the pre-school. Mrs. Pam van Zijl, the stalwart of the junior primary section continues to deliver a very high quality of work in laying a sound foundation for the learners as they start their long academic career. Mrs. Rashida Erlank, has continued to work very hard at all the tasks set her. She brings with her a sense of fun and a need to impart some drama. Sometimes in the staff room but mostly in the annual play. Mrs. Joey Korff, a recent addition to the schools management team delivers both managerial and class work in a quiet confident and very efficient way. Mrs. Janelle de Necker is continually busying herself with all events at CBC, be it flower decorations, table settings or even in helping the senior pupils with the outreach programmes and the Edmund Rice Society. She is also a new addition to the school management team, taking control of the grade 4-6 department. Mrs. Tersia Gianni in grade 5 tries very hard to lay the correct foundations in English amongst our young learners, a difficult task considering that the majority of our learners are not English first language speakers at home. Mrs. Wendy Rankgotha has shown a lot of dedication since joining our staff . Always being prepared to learn new ways or skills in managing her assignments. Mr. Pierre Noeth is developing into a CBC teacher as he tries very hard to bring up the standard of mathematics. A difficult assignment considering the complexities of the subject. Mr Cris Moncur , sets about tasks in an efficient yet calm way, always ensuring that all people concerned are treated in a fair way. We thank him for the concern shown to the pupils and college, as well as the many hours he spends away from home during the sport tours. I would also personally like to thank him for the hassle free way in which he controls the school when I am away attending workshops or meetings. Mrs. Marietha Nieuwoudt, together with her very efficient way of teaching still has the time to listen to the children and is often found taking up their cause. She is currently also a new member of the school management team being in control of the FET phase of the school. Mrs. Lerato Bobicbo- a past pupil of ours , carries with her a deep understanding of the CBC ethos and never hesitates to involve herself in all aspects of the college, striving to bring out the best in all our learners. Mr. Vince Daly, who continues to have the college at the center of his heart, is a pillar of stability when there is any form of crisis. The caring way in which he nurtures his grade 8's is testimony of this. Mrs. Christine Conradie has an empathy and understanding that is truly admirable. She is prepared to spend many hours in preparing her debating team to reach high levels of excellence. Mr. Christo Gouws has the difficult task of teaching Afrikaans second language. A fact that he has realized, availing himself in the time before school to help the willing learners to master his subject. Mrs. Annalise Mienie, only does a job if it is done to a high level of perfection, sometimes leading to her bumping heads with the sometimes unwilling learners. One only has to look at the Matric
Farewell and the quality of the school magazine that will attest to this fact. Mrs. Elsabe Vorster has a passion for her subject of mathematics. She tirelessly works to high levels in her class and in the afternoons to push the children as hard as possible to reach their potential in the matric final examinations. Mr. Tankiso Mosoeu - The epitemy of a gentleman, while teaching Sesotho or in his general dealings with the learners, he always has the time to stop and listen to the children. Constantly helping them to make the correct decisions in life, thereby helping them to improve. Mrs. Sandy Milward completes her very diverse tasks with an air of efficient accomplishment, training the learners in both spiritual and technological fields. The computer scenario has grown under her ever watchful eye, with even more improvements in the pipeline. Mrs. Letitia van Bosch a highly motivated and competent teacher. Although only part time in the grade 10-12 section, she attacks any assignment with a vibrance that is unsurpassed, while never losing sight of excellence at the same time. Mrs. Ileen Daly, the lady who controls finance, is also the lady that has to answer to other calls of help. The unflustered way in which she handles people and problems is to be admired. Mrs. Annamarie Meyer continues to deliver good service at reception, handling a sometimes very stressful job with quiet efficiency. Tannie Claassen sits sedately in her tuck shop providing for the hungry tummies at break, but can at the drop of the hat be asked to step in and help in any other field. A task that she will perform quite willingly. Mrs. Karen Vorster and Mrs. Louise Malherbe continue to increase the standard of music and singing at CBC. A department that is starting to make a name for itself in Bloemfontein. It is for a number of years now that we have been continually praised for the good standard of singing. Mrs. Harriet Speckmeier- Man this Tannie keeps you on your toes. A teacher who has not been with us long, yet her footprints are already deeply etched in our college life. Her main function is to teach and control the remedial support structures of the school. However she avails herself to all aspects of the college life. Getting involved and organizing sponsorships and prizes for fundraising events. However her main talent is the care and compassion she has for the learners at school. All the children know that they can go to her for any form of counseling in times of need. Mrs. Helen Reid- Joined our staff in 1976 as a grade 3 teacher. She has since retired, but continues to run and organise the school library with great efficiency. Mr.Pine Pienaar and the ground staff , who are not always appreciated for their hard work, must be thanked for the tireless work performed . CBC is definitely looking better every year. Daycare ladies: Mrs. Rose Willis, Linda Goodlet, Phlynne Donaldson and Hloekile are to be thanked for their work in the afternoons, it can't be easy working with tired children trying to get them to complete their homework and study for tests and examinations. The co-operation between CBC and the Catholic Church improves every year. The parish priests, Fr.s Leo Roche and Siktis, deserve most of the thanks and appreciation. We are collectively trying to achieve the same common objective, namely the evangelisation and education of the young; this relationship needs to be strong. We thank them both for their input into raising the awareness of our school.

O
nce again another year has flown by unbelievably quickly and it is time to think back on the joy, pleasure and, perhaps, the hardship of the past year.
For most of us the year has been very busy yet very productive and if we look at the smiling faces in the photographs, also a very pleasant year. The editorial staff has found putting together this magazine most enjoyable and we trust that, as you page through it, you, too, will enjoy it.

It is however, imperative that the aforesaid involvement be maximised by getting more parents to participate in school matters.
e as the St Joseph’s CBC teachers, note with appreciation the extent to which the little group of concerned parents persistently got involved in the education of their children in this school. The manner in which they got involved includes: responding to the needs of the school when called upon to do so asking questions when they do not understand
making suggestions that are geared towards the improvement of education at the school.
It would also be of great help if the times during which children are dropped off, as well as the pick-up times, could be adhered to TIMEOUSLY by parents. Keep the good work going! T. U. Mosoeu (Staff representative)

Head Prefects As we assumed our various duties for the leadership year we soon realised that the task set before us would turn out to be a lot easier than we had expected, contrary to popular belief! The enthusiasm and the will to work together adopted by the class of 2012 ensured that the prefect body executed their duties with ease, and consequently, viewed prefectship as less of a burden. Throughout the year we have come to learn and appreciate the value of discipline, team-work and effective communication. This year evolved into a journey of self-improvement which has moulded us all into conscientious young adults.

A big thank you to Mr. Gouws for his willingness to listen to our problems and also offer solutions which always proved to be effective. To the matric class, your support reduced what we thought to be a journey of a million miles to one that seems to have lasted only a minute. Thank you!

Day Care Report
T
his year has really flown. I cannot believe it is nearly the end of 2012. Looking back on the year, I would like to thank Mr. Borchard for his continued interest and support of the Day Care Team. Also a great big thank you to all our loyal Day Care Parents who continued to trust us with their children in the afternoons. The year had a shaky start for me with the death of my beloved husband, Stan. I could not have made it through if not for the incredible support of staff and learners. The love and empathy I received was overwhelming. It shows that CBC is really a family school, full of love. I am so grateful to one and all. With teacher Hloekile Botsane going off on her maternity leave, we were very pleased to welcome Miss Melissa Edwards to our team. She has proved to be a great asset to the grade two’s and three’s. The learners really have
12

taken to her. Rose Willis continues her sterling work with grade four, five and six learners. The new system of control is working well for both her and parents. Her keen sense of humour certainly keeps the learners guessing and on their toes. Mrs. Linda Goodlett, with the help of Marta Phandle are carrying on with the difficult task of the little ones in the afternoons. We thank them both for their dedication and patience. We wish to congratulate Hloekile with the birth of her second daughter. Soon we will be facing the new challenges that 2013 has to offer us. We look forward to being of service again next year. God Bless Mrs. Phlynne Donaldson and team
Remedial Education The Importance of Language and Reading Language is essential to communications. Even signing is a language. The importance of reading, writing and spelling can thus not be over-emphasized. Nelson Mandela once said: “A good heart and a good head are always a formidable combination, but when you add to that a literate tongue and pen, you have something very special.”
Remedial Unit and I thank them most sincerely for helping to ensure that underachievers continued to receive the attention they required. The Remedial Unit has been very active this year, and many professional colleagues have provided assistance. Their input has contributed greatly to the success of the unit.
We are indebted to the efforts of Ms Valmerie Pienaar, the Occupational Therapist, who assisted in the presentation of workshops on Study Skills and Motivation. A Stimulation Programme was implemented in Grade 1. Unfortunately Valmerie has moved to Gauteng but has been replaced by Ms Tereasa Wessels a very experienced Occupational Therapist in the field of Perception and Visio- Motor integration difficulties.
It is with gratitude that we acknowledge the contributions of our visiting Intern Psychologists from the University of the Free State.
It stands to reason then that the scope of man's ability to express his thoughts is determined by his ability to use language. The knowledge and language proficiency acquired through listening and reading developed at schools equip a child with power, not only to do well at school, but also to achieve throughout adult life. The teaching of reading is thus the first priority in the primary school curriculum. It is an essential building block, because the ability to read well and comprehend what is being read ensures success in all other subjects. The learners do not see this, they see reading as relating only to language subjects, but this is not so. Each subject sets its own specific reading requirements and for this reason cognitive reading is a prerequisite for satisfactory progress in every grade. It is imperative that this ability is developed in the primary phase, because between 80% and 90% of the study activities at secondary level depend on reading. Clearly then, reading is the key to achievement as it opens many doors and creates almost limitless possibilities for advancement. Every child's future is closely aligned to the quality of education he or she receives, so it is imperative that every effort be made to remove all obstacles that impede progress. Corrective and Remedial Instruction thus plays a fundamental role in CBC's overall developmental programme. Corrective instruction is handled within the framework of regular classroom teaching. The remedial teacher spends time consulting with class teachers and offering corrective instruction to a small group of learners in the class who are struggling to understand a particular process e.g. multiplication, long division, comprehension, punctuation and so on. Remedial instruction is reserved for the relatively few pupils who require intensive individualized attention because they reveal achievement deficits in the basic subjects, such as reading, comprehension, spelling and mathematics. A wide variety of learners from Grade 1 to 4 were enrolled in remediation programmes this year. In order to meet the needs of new referrals from Grade 1, learners from Grades 5 who had completed a year of intensive instruction were referred at the end of the first term, to Mr Gouws and Mrs Giani for extra classes in mathematics and English. Other teachers have also developed a close working relationship with the
Primarily, schools should be safe, nurturing environments and CBC is dedicated to this so, when bullying raised its head, as it does in every school, it was nipped in the bud. Immediate steps were taken. Ms Anli Myburgh, conducted a bullying survey and implemented workshops during which the implications of bullying were discussed with all learners from Grades 1-12. Ms Helene Carshagen and Ms Natasha Arndt were available for counselling and support sessions with learners who needed this.
Child Welfare Bloemfontein & Childline Free State screened the movie “TRUST” a chilling cautionary tale about online sexual predators, for Grades 7 to12. A discussion, led by experienced social workers and a prevention team from the school, followed. The main objective was to illustrate how trusting a stranger over the internet could be detrimental, even dangerous and to demonstrate how using the internet in an inappropriate manner could open doors to trafficking, pornography, cyber bullying and other horrors of modern life.
A special word of thanks must go to Ms Corina Botha, Occupational Therapist and Mr Martin Brink, Psychologist from the Motheo Inclusive Education Section of the Department for Basic Education for their assistance with Evaluations and Assessments and also to the Life Skills Education Unit which sponsored a Peer Education Camp for Grade 11 learners at Amanzi Private Game Reserve, Brandfort.
Finally I wish to express my appreciation to Mr Wally Borchard, the Principal, for the continuous encouragement, support and freedom of opportunity he has afforded the Unit. Harriet Speckmeier (Remedial Education Teacher)

Pre-School Report
2
012 has proved to be an eventful and fulfilling year for the pre-school. The grade R pupils started the CAPS curriculum and are really enjoying this programme. It stimulates the children and opens their minds for more creative thinking and reasoning. As teachers, we see a big difference in the scholastic development of the grade R children. The grade R and 0 children went on an exciting outing to a building site in phase 6. Each child wore a builder's hat – much to their delight! A few children were selected to lay a few bricks with cement. After our visit they returned to school tired, but happy. One of our parents arranged a visit by the ambulance services. Groups of children were
treated to a ride around the school in an ambulance – what an experience! Our PTA members have been raising funds for our project which is to enclose our back verandah with canvas – perfect for rainy days. A Wendy house is also planned for the future. We appreciate their efforts. Shervonne joined our staff as grade R assistant this year. She has proved to be a great help in the class. My sincere thanks go to all my staff and assistants for their loyalty and hard work. I cannot do without them. Last but not least my thanks and gratitude go to Mr Borchard for all the love and kindness he puts into the pre-school and its children. He has a very special place in our hearts.

Khaliso - School I wake up at 5 'o clock every morning. I first wash my body then I go to the kitchen to eat. I must then get ready for school. When we go to our places we must work very hard and neatly in our books. Ayabulela Nkwakwa - About God There is no other God but the God in heaven who created us .He made you and me in His own image. We had a great time together. Bonolo Koporopo - Beauty and the beast Beauty and the beast is my favourite story. A rich man had children and he bought them everything that they wanted. He had beautiful daughters but the youngest was the prettiest of all. Everyone called her Beauty and it made her sisters very jealous. One day a terrible thing happened to their father and they became poor. Their father tried many ways to make money and one day he landed at the castle of the beast. The beast wanted his beautiful daughter. At first she was scared but they fell in love and he became a handsome prince. They lived happily ever after. Everyone on my team run to hug me for scoring a goal. They are all happy that I scored a goal. All I want to be is a good soccer player. Molemo Logobane God sent His only son Jesus Christ to die for our sins. Jesus came to save us from the bad things. If we are not listening to God then we are disobedient. We must remember that God is watching us and we must be good. We must follow the ten commandments. Nyakallo Tladi God is a wonderful father to all of us. I love Him very much.God wants us to be kind and loving to each other. God also sent His son Jesus to us. Ndumiso Wotshela - The Lorax He is a great carer. He does not like evil. He has cool clothes. When they wanted to chop down the trees, he was angry because it would look ugly and the animals would not have food Charlotte Okoye One day when I grow up, I want to be a nurse. Nurses help the doctors to help patients in the hospital. I must learn hard at school so that I can become a nurse. Nurses are kind people because they must look after the sick people in hospital. They are just like the doctors, they also give us injections and give us medicine. Siphiwe Mabizela I love soccer, so when I grow up , I would love to play soccer for a big club like Pirates. They are my favourite team. My dad coaches me at home and Mr. Borchard coaches us at school. Soccer is such a wonderful sport, I really like it very much. I
can hardly believe that 2012 is nearly at an end! The Grade 5's have studied hard and it has been a pleasure to have them for a second year. The Grade 5's are an extremely bright and busy bunch and I have certainly enjoyed teaching them. We had an Entrepreneurs Day during the second term which was very successful and the children really showed great enthusiasm and had some excellent business ideas. All the children that took part made a small proďŹ t. They had lovely posters to advertise their wares and enjoyed the day.

A lot of projects were also done for Social Science especially, and some of the children put in a great deal of effort. I am very proud of them. We are planning to make special presents for the children at Lesedi Centre of Hope for Christmas as our class outreach. There is also a zoo snooze planned for the fourth term. It has been a fulďŹ lling and good year and I wish the Grade 5's a pleasant 2013!! Tersia Giani

Grade 6 Grade 6 - Baby Project: by Palesa Molatoli On Monday the 20 August, the Grade 6 class started on our “Baby Project” or Doll Parenting. This is when we bring dolls to school and pretend that they are real babies. We had to buy real baby food, milk and clothes.
of a baby and we just wanted this project to end. Oratile's baby had writing on its forehead, it looked like a tattoo. The baby was removed from Oratile and Omphile was given full custody of the baby as the mother (Oratile) was abusive and neglected the baby.
On the first day of this project, we were all very excited. As the days went by, we became bored because we went to bed late because we had to feed the babies. We did not eat at break time because we had to feed and change the babies nappies. After school we had to find baby sitters so that we could go to sport. After just a few days, we realised what a big responsibility it is to take care
My baby's head became loose and it was very funny. We also had four single mothers Lebo, Lehakoe, Kani and Lerato. Ade and Kananelo were the only parents with twins. Caring for children is a very big responsibility and it is therefore better to have children when you are older. You must be emotionally, financially and physically ready before you have children.
Grade 6 - Visit to Pholoho School: by Omphile Ramafoko
When we arrived at the school, Mrs. Rankhota enquired about the kinds of disabilities the children had. The principal of the school told us that the children were autistic.
On Friday 13 April, the Grade 6 class went on a trip to Pholoho. Pholoho is a school for children with various disabilities. We collected chips, sweets, tooth brushes and toothpaste, face cloth's, and bath soap. The morning before we left, Tlotlo's aunt brought a big pot of soup which we took with to the school.
We were welcomed by the principal and then she introduced us to the children and the teachers of the school. Although these children are autistic, they are children just like us. Before we departed from the school, we were given board erasers that were made by the children of Pholoho School.

Prize Giving 2012 It is a great honour and pleasure for me to share the occasion of your prize giving ceremony with you today and to congratulate all our prize winners as well as every learner who performed to the best of his or her ability in 2012. Dear Learners It would be a mistake to see events like this one as a celebration ONLY of the top achievers and award recipients. Today is very much about each one of you here taking stock of the results of your work, attitude and motivation. You need to be asking yourself about the way forward. Each one of you has the potential and the opportunity to be the recipient of future awards. Today is about affirmation and seeking inspiration. It is about the future as much as it is an acknowledgement of the past. But most importantly, it is about the present, and the power each of us has to CREATE new possibilities from this moment forward. With this in mind, I have three main points on which I wish to focus this afternoon: The power of Choice The Setting of Goals based on values Being passionate about what we do The power of Choice We make choices all the time, from the moment we wake up until we go to bed: Do I go to school or do I get my mom to call the school and say that I am sick? Do I get a late slip from the office or do I try and sneak into period one without being noticed? Do I listen attentively in class or do I attempt to distract my friend ? Do I write my own homework or do I copy my friend's homework? These are some of the choices that we don't even realise we are making. What we must begin to acknowledge is that the choices we make can bring us CLOSER TO or take us FURTHER AWAY from our dreams, our goals. I would like to urge each of you to become aware of the Choice you have at any given moment- the choice you have right now, right this minute. Your actions do not merely need to be habit, routine, ritual or whatever the herd decides. Choice is a powerful tool that, when used with consciousness, opens possibilities that were NEVER going to happen. The clever student is the one who consciously makes clever choices. Take a moment to look at the choices you need to make in your life.... In your studies…in your family life…in your friendships…what kind of clever choices are you going to make? The Setting of Goals based on values So what happens after you have made powerful, positive choices? Well to achieve any real result, Choices must be followed by actions aligned with that choice. Goal setting is a powerful tool that facilitates the achievement of our dreams. It helps us to focus our attention, to organize our time and to use our resources optimally. Success breeds success, goals that are achieved, motivate us to achieve even more and boost our belief in our own ability. However, a crucial element to effective goal setting is creating goals based on values. When we set goals based on values then there is an overall improvement in who we are and in all aspects of our lives. If, for example, we declare Excellence as our life goal, then every area of our life will be an opportunity for excellence to show up: our academic results would be excellent, our sporting achievements would be excellent, our relationships would be excellent, the way in which we speak, our conduct and our dress would be excellent. Being passionate about what we do This brings me to my third point: Being Passionate in what we do. When we experience ourselves as
successful, achieving what we've set out to achieve, we start to enjoy our success and the striving becomes fun. We have fun while we learn and success becomes available. When we use our skills and talents to do something meaningful and significant in our lives, we develop Passion. Being Passionate is also a choice. It is the choice we make to bring enthusiasm, commitment and enjoyment to those value-based goals we have set. When we are passionate we do things to the best of our ability. We do more than what is required. We are positive and enthusiastic. We inspire others by our example. Passion is contagious. It is that which makes us know we are ALIVE! We all have the Power of Choice and that is exactly what Choice is: POWER. Regarding academic progress, sporting excellence or Life itself, each and every one of us has the choice to be excellent or mediocre. What do you choose? Dear Parents Back when our parents were born, parenting skills were learned from the extended family. If parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles didn't live in the same house, they usually lived within a few miles. They were always available to impart their considerable wisdom to the younger generation on the subjects of pregnancy, childbirth, and raising children. Now, we have become such a transient society; it is rare that the extended family is even in the same province! Since the late 20th and early 21st centuries, parents have had to learn creative ways to raise their children. We surf the Internet, read books, take classes, talk to our parents on the telephone, and make friends with parents who have "been there and done that." We then filter these things through our own morality, sensibilities, and personalities to make them work for our own families. Wouldn't it be easier if each baby arrived with an owner's manual attached? Parenting Skills - Education The ability to recognize what we teach our children is one parenting skill from which we can all benefit. From the moment our children are born, they are learning from us. They learn that if they cry, we respond. If they pull our hair, we say, "ouch." If they throw their cup on the floor, we pick it up. As time goes on, we also teach them to walk, talk, get dressed, and say their A-B-C's. Parenting styles are only a small piece of what it takes to be a "good parent". Parenting takes a lot of skill and patience and is constant work and growth. Research shows that children benefit most when their parents: communicate honestly about events or discussions that have happened stay consistent, children need structure, parents that have normal routines benefit children incredibly; taking more interest in their child's educational needs and early development; and A child's educational success is not always dependent upon where he attends school, but how involved his parents are in his education. Keep open communication and stay educated on what your child is learning and doing and how it is affecting him or her. Parenting Skills - Discipline Probably the most important and controversial parenting skill is discipline. We parents are conflicted over what type of discipline to apply at what time. Appropriate discipline for a two year-old might not be appropriate or effective for a 10 year-old or a teenager. The most important piece of the discipline puzzle is determining who is in charge: the parents or the child. This may sound simple, but in this day and age, the answer isn't always clear. The fear of hurting a child's feelings or crushing his spirit coerces many parents into allowing their children to rule the roost. Children need firm boundaries that come from
clear and consistent parental discipline. Whether the method is redirection, time-outs, loss of privileges, grounding, extra chores, or spanking, it is crucial that we embrace our role to train our children to become moral, respectable adults. Good character consists of moral knowing, moral feeling and moral action: Understanding, caring about and acting upon ethical core values. These values include respect, responsibility, honesty, fairness, integrity, kindness, selfdiscipline and courage. As parents, we have the responsibility to teach our children morals and values. We cannot depend solely on the schools to fulfil this important duty. 'Do what I say and not what I do' is a common phrase that is often repeated; however it only confuses children. Children will not do what the parent says, since they will do what the parents have modelled. Children model the behaviours that the parent has presented to them time and time again. Looking at the messages one sends to his or her child is easily seen by analyzing one's own behaviours. Children are observant and easily detect how adults, in so many ways, fail to practice what they preach. The parents' main goal is to always set a positive example that the children can model by. Parents teach children values by living their lives accordingly, not by pressuring their children to live by certain rules. It is also our responsibility as parents and teachers to guide our children into a personal relationship with GOD and to teach them HIS values Parenting Skills - Praise Ray Burke states, “Praise is powerful. Praising your child is one of the most important things you can do as a parent. Praise is nourishment. It helps your child grow emotionally, just as food helps your child grow physically” One could not have summed up what the effects of praise are any better than that. Praise is a method of keeping focus on the positive of any situation. The reason behind giving praise is to build self esteem, to give a belief of personal satisfaction, with the addition of feeling secure within oneself. There is a sense of confidence that one has when one knows that someone has paid attention and has encouraged them with a positive response. In praising your children it will only encourage them to do well at whatever task they are faced with. How often should we praise a child? When a child is not praised enough the outcome is usually a lack of confidence, a feeling of non importance, and a concept of not being approved of when attempting new things. However, when praise is given too often it can result in taking things for granted, a sense of arrogance, a false expectation of never failing, and of course spoiling of the child. To effectively praise children, one must have a balance in responses. Firstly, praise your children at tasks they already do well, but may have been taken for granted by the parent. Secondly, praise your children when they make improvements on current skills or tasks. Thirdly, praise your child when he/she makes positive attempts at new skills or tries new tasks. These three situations answer the questions on how often and when a child should be praised without negative behaviours surfacing. Conclusion Being an effective parent requires dedication, attention and love. Parenting is possibly the most important job and role to play. It is very time consuming but brings about very rewarding fruits in the long run. The future generations of the world (our children) will prosper psychologically when devotion and effort is put into their upbringing. Compiled by Mrs Speckmeier Together we will strive for excellence

n the beginning of the year, we as a class started by choosing monitors, Motshidisi Rasego, Thabiso Mohouloa, Fiona Maina, Mpho Thole, Basetsana Seitshiro and Bokamoso Moroka. In March, Mr and Mrs Noeth, took us to “On Track Adventures near Hobhouse for a team building and leadership camp. The weekend was full of excitement and we learned a lot about nature. During May we won the May project, by collecting the most clothes and other items for under privileged people. We also supported one of the ground workers when his house burnt down by giving him tin food, mattresses and other goods. Now we are looking forward to Grade 8, it is only the FINAL Examination that lies ahead.

GREAT REALLY SMART AMBITIOUS DILIGENT ENTHUSIASTIC EIGHT
This year was a rather great year for us as a class. We learned to work together, support and to help each other. Our class teacher, Mrs Bucibo, got married. We grew as individuals and had a lot of fun together by means of “rapping and singing”. The most memorable event we had this year was visiting the children at the Pelonomi Hospital. We realized how lucky and blessed we are. 2012 will most definitely be the year NEVER to forget.

he Grade 9 class of 2012 was a wonderful class, though we had our ups and downs.
We also had our differences, but most of the time we were there for each other. In almost everything we did as a team, we tried to face the challenge with a positive attitude. We went to Zastron as a class and as a team. Everything we did was about being winners and learning how to be tough. I wouldn't say our class was perfect, but surely we knew how to keep our personal issues about each other to ourselves. We were one! I'd like to thank Mrs Vorster on behalf of my classmates for being a wonderful class teacher to us and to the Grade 9's for making this year a memorable one. Thato Setona

Grade 9 Grade 9 visit to Zastron Zastron, what an experience! Upon your arrival, you are so hyped up and excited. After about 3 days you start missing proper food but most importantly to have a nice long bath instead of a quick hot shower. The activities given to us, will help us through life. The high ropes helped most of us to overcome our fears for heights, the obstacle course helped us to learn to work as a team, the paint ball shooting taught us that in life it's always going to be each man for himself,
the potjiekos-cooking taught most of us how to cook and the lantern search helped us to overcome our fear of being alone out in the veld. All in all, Zastron was a fun experience. It taught us that everything is not handed out to you on a silver plate. Honestly speaking, it brought some of us together but tore others apart I would not mind doing it again. T
he year started off well for the grade 11 class of 2012 as we embarked on a journey of knowledge. We attended the RADS Peer Support camp at Amanzi Game Lodge. We learnt how morals and attitudes affect our outlook on life, we were taught how to identify and assist peers with problems and much more knowledge on how to make our school better for everyone.
We ďŹ nally agreed to have a masquerade theme which was a huge success and the matrics enjoyed the night and tremendously appreciated the effort we put into organising it, but this would not have been possible without the more experienced and very imaginative minds of Mr Borchard and Mrs Miennie. Not only can we plan events but we are indeed the Einsteins of the 21st century.
With that we were very enthusiastic and this uniďŹ ed our class and brought about very optimistic mindsets. The only task left was to introduce this programme to our school and this was indeed done with a very successful RADS launch that took place, but all this would not have been possible without the helping hands of Mrs Speckmeier, Mrs Miennie, Mr Borchard, Mrs Bucibo and our Camp facilitators. We are a class full of laughter, an immense amount of energy and the potential to do anything we put our minds to.
This year we had Sonwabile Sigenue and Katiso Moeketsi who were chosen as the top 50 Science Students in the Free State. Lindiwe Kers also represented the class as she got the SANRAL Science bursary. Rethabile Thekiso and Jade Scott were chosen to represent the Free State Hockey team. At the beginning of the year 5 of our girls made the Inter CBC hockey team and Rethabile Thekiso came back with the S.A CBC representative tie. Seven of our boys made the Inter CBC Soccer team and Napo Modise, Ketso Nkholise, Khayalethu Mlonyeni and Kholisile Nyongwana were awarded S.A. CBC representative ties. We are also looking at a possible South African idol as Kgantshe Tau obtained an A for her Eisteddfod solo singing. During the year Katiso Moeketsi and Lindiwe Kers pursued their goals as future lawyers. They came 2nd in the Province and went on to Pretoria to represent the Free State at the National Moot Court. This is a very talented group who are going to make many proud in the near future.
We had the V-Bash which was also a great success even with its ups and downs. The rest of the school enjoyed this event and the money raised went for a good cause. We had many more projects as the year went by but the biggest one was the 2012 matric farewell which had a lot of quarrels and, being the group of 1995, every -decision made in our class had to be democratic. This decision making was a hard task that nobody looked forward to.

Mpho Lebaka - I have been attending CBC since I was four years old, so basically I have been in this school for 14 years. CBC is not just a school for me, it has been my second home. I have learnt how to speak English, have gained self confidence and also made lifelong friends at CBC. The values that I have gained from this school will never be forgotten. I thank God for bringing me here to this school, I could not have asked for a better place to spend my pre-school, middle school and high school career. I thank every teacher that has contributed to what I have become today. CBC will always have a special place in my heart. Nthabiseng Maphisa - 2012 was a year of service to the school, dedication to one's academics and camaraderie amongst the matric class. We were faced with many challenges but faced them with perseverance, guidance and hard work. My time at CBC has taught me values that one can carry throughout life. I have learnt from my classmates to smile, have a sense of humour and to endure life's challenges with grace. The teachers have provided me with the knowledge to excel in my final examination and I am grateful to them for tolerance and determination. Gomolemo and Karabo - Matric year was met with a huge sigh of relief, FINALLY! Preparation for the year started prematurely, long before our Grade 11 reports were in

print. Most of us had started with shopping for our uniform. The excitement was like none experienced before. The first few days kitted out in our new uniform from head to toe, felt like déjà vu, like we were in Grade One all over again. The long awaited, bittersweet moment had finally arrived. Behold the class of 2012: a class of limitless possibilities and fervour. From the moment we started iln Grade 12 our aim was to resurrect the spirit of Edmund Rice, quench the thirst of mediocrity for superiority and be the best we could possibly be. Karabelo Bantseke - This time last year, we the present Grade 12”s were preparing to become the future leaders of the school and eagerly anticipating what lay ahead for us as matriculants. The first day of the first term was the sweetest when we got to reveal our new sophisticated corporate look, a huge transformation especially for the girls. The year of 2012 has come and gone and we can only hope that we have fulfilled our purpose and made our school proud and continue to make it proud as we set out into the world. I can safely say that we have each grown as individuals but more importantly we have grown as a unit. Two things set us apart from past and future matriculants, we are the “Born Free's” of 1994 and the fact that no other matric class will ever sound as awesome as 'CLASS OF 2012'

When he sees that you are living what you read, he flees... And when you are about to forward this message... he will try and discourage you... Biblical Guiding Values underpin our education in C.B.C. Each one of our teachers expresses a love and commitment towards God. This is evident in their commitment and attitudes towards the children in our school. This year we divided the Religious Education between the teachers. In doing so we hoped that the learners would receive a varied interpretation of the love and care that each teacher feels when he/she imparts the scriptures and how we should live our lives according to the biblical principles we are all committed to. Father Sixtus joined the Sacred Heart Parish this year. Under his guidance our Retreat at the beginning of the year took on a new and fresh view which was enthusiastically accepted by the learners. I wish you all God's richest blessing in your future endeavours. Thank you to all the teachers for their contributions towards the liturgies and teaching of a Christian way of life for our children. Your contributions allow each child to grow and the best we can hope for is that the seed we planted will one day bear fruit in their hearts and attitudes in years to come. y first impression of the U/10 girls was that they are still so small! What a formidable little team they turned into as the hockey season progressed. We worked extremely hard to get fit, learn new ball skills, techniques and how to play a clever, well planned match. Despite being one of the smallest schools in Bloemfontein we held our own against our bigger counterparts and managed to win almost all our games.
this year by Geraldo Tayler. He is an experienced hockey player and always encouraged the girls to reach new heights and taught them the finer techniques in the way of playing the game. Girls, you have all been stars this year as you never gave up and always played the best game no matter how strong the opposition. Always believe in yourself, only do your best and never give up on your dreams.
We would not have been able to achieve our goals without the help of Amantle and Khanyisa. Thank you for sharing your time and love for the game with us.
The season would not have been such a success if we did not have the wonderful support and enthusiasm from parents at all our matches. Parents, you are the best! Let us hit, run and score goals next year again!
The U/12 girls had the pleasure of being trained

T
he 2012 u 18 season has definitely been one of the most memorable seasons, especially for the matriculants who form part of the team along with the grade 11's. This season saw us take on various teams in the league with the highest spirit and although we did not always achieve a desired result at the end of every match we surely had tons of fun. The undying spirit was responsible for the high note on which this season ended; we retain the 4th position in the league. The annual inter-CBC tournament which was held in Pretoria was also one of the memorable events where we saw
ourselves form a bond on and off the field and 3 of our team mates made the SA CBC team (G. Mochoari, L. Mokuni, R. Thekiso). During this season a few of our team mates made the various Southern Free State teams namely Gomolemo Mochoari, Rethabile Thekiso, Jade Scott and Refiloe Mangoejane. Overall we had a wonderful season with our wonderful coach who always lifted the spirit when necessary throughout the season. Thank you, Mrs Bucibo, and team for a wonderful year and good luck to the matrics for the future.

unior soccer at CBC is alive and healthy! All the junior boys are out on the fields three times a week practising on Mondays and Wednesdays and playing matches on Tuesdays. Our A teams all did exceptionally well, winning most of their matches and that against strong opposition. The busy season had many highlights and as always we started with a 5 a side tournament at CBC where our U11 s reached the semi-finals and our U9 s made it to the finals. The annual Derby against St Andrews, Welkom is always an enjoyable outing, creating lots of excitement

among the boys. Both our U9 and U13 teams had comprehensive victories. CBC U9 s also reached the finals in the knockout tournament played at Grey College this year - well done. Another highlight was the U13's that went to Kimberley for the Winter Festival. Once again we can be very proud of our boys with their high win rate. A very big thank you must go to all the coaches, refs, players and supporters for a most enjoyable and successful season. Mr C Moncur

O
n the 8th August 2012 the Inter CBC first teams departed for Springs Guateng for the Winter Season Tournament. The teams were accompanied by two coaches, Mr Moncur and Mrs Bucibo. We left in the afternoon with great excitement and anticipation to get there. We arrived at 18H00 and headed for The Carnival Road Lodge. We were immediately addressed to our rooms. Later that evening we went out to the Carnival Casino to relax before the big day. Thursday the 9th was our first day of the tournament at Veritas College. We left the Lodge with a lot of team spirit and anxiety to play. Our 1st match was against Veritas the host and we won 4-0 and our second match was against CBC Boksburg and we won 2-0. That was our first victory of the day. We headed back to the Lodge to freshen up and later left for the Casino again.
Friday the 10th was our second day of the Tournament and our first match was against St. John. We beat them 3-0. The second match was against Mariasdal and we drew one all. We later played a match against Mount Edmund and lost 4-2 on penalties. That was the emotional highlight of the day but we never lost hope as we headed back to the Lodge to prepare for the next day playing against Mariasdal for the 3rd and 4th position and we won 4-0. We then had mass to congratulate our S.A. CBC representatives namely Ketso, Kholisile, Khayalethu and Napo. Immediately after that we said our good byes and departed back home. It was one of the best and most memorable tournaments, filled with emotion, anxiety and spirit. We would like to thank everybody for making it one of a kind tournament.

rom the start of the ďŹ rst term of 2012, the music department was running in top speed! In just 9 weeks we organized, choreographed, practiced and performed the big EXTRAVAGANZA! This exciting production with singing, dancing and music was a successful venture of the whole school and all the teachers, with Karen Vorster and Louise Malherbe of the music department taking the lead. Friends of CBC were the choreographers and played in the 12-man band. This was an extremely successful production! The numbers have grown to 38 enthusiastic music learners who participated in the music programme for piano, keyboard and recorder. All of them took part in the St. Michael's Music Festival during May. We received 2 A++; 8 A+; 15 A; and 18 B+ certiďŹ cates: KB. MICHELE, KEABETSWE MALAY, ABDUL ADAM, LIHLE MAKAPEL, THATO KHANG, MOTSHIDISI RASEGO, MANDY MDAWARIMA, MOHAU LECHEKO, PALESA MOLATOLI and MICHAEL DAVIDS being those who stood out. Congratulations to every single music learner! Mr. Roy Visser joined the music department to give Guitar lessons, and the total of learners have grown to 10! Miss Beth Giani has now got 5 Violin learners and they are all very excited and enthusiastic.

On the 7th September the BLOEMFONTEI RECORDER FESTIVAL took place and this was for more advanced learners. Only Michael Davids and Bonolo Parman were chosen to take part. They performed very well and learned a lot! The Music Concert in the Fourth term is always very special. All the budding musicians will take part, playing in duets, solos, and little groups to show their musical skill! They will entertain their family and friends especially when they all play together in a great big orchestra at the end of the concert. Prize giving will be special this year because all the recorder players will perform during the Junior Prize giving. The Senior prize giving function, with the whole school singing together and musicians performing, will always stand out as a highlight! As always, the Interhouse Music Challenge will be the last music activity of the year, and the creative CBC learners always surprise us with energetic and musical performances of high quality! The Christmas-Mass, when we all say goodbye, always has musicians and groups who accompany the Christmas Carols. What would CBC be if we did not liven our world with music?

his year our junior debating teams got off the ground. It has been a wonderful experience for me to see the enthusiasm of our juniors for debating. There were quite a few wins and also best speakers. They debated at Brebner High School, Grey College and Eunice as well as HTS. We were able to take two junior teams of three each to the debates. Unfortunately we could not
attend during the third term as the debates fell during the cycle test and exam weeks. I certainly hope to continue with the junior debating next year because this is a skill the children learn for life. GO JUNIOR DEBATERS!!! I am proud of you all!! Tersia Giani

s we debated through another year of topics, the victories, defeats and all the slippery slopes were constantly experienced. We felt the pressure as many new debaters were welcomed into the teams and we felt many times that our topics were outrageous, or we could not understand them... however, when you have a generic version of Shakespeare coaching you, debating becomes a one-sided sermon, with CBC on the winning side. That is why we, as the debaters and the judicators, would like to thank Mrs

As His Word says, all good things come from Him, so we can rest assured that next year will be another good year of debates. Jared Sukdaven
Chess A CBC entered two under 19 teams this year. We did ďŹ nd it difďŹ cult to compete against the much bigger schools in Bloemfontein. We had twelve chess players and eight of them are in Grade 12. They will be greatly missed next year. The boys played their hearts out and we actually had a wonderful chess year. Thank you guys, for a positive and competitive attitude during the chess season.
