We as Americans are so blessed and have so many resources, I want to better follow God’s leading to help where it’s needed, especially with babies. And I want to learn to curb my sweet tooth!

My resolution is to get back into running and cooking! Before my daughter was born, these were both passions of mine – and I want to make them a priority again.

I always say yes to my children and husband, but I want to say yes more often to my close friends and family, too. I’m also devoting the next 12 months to fitness and strength training, to have more energy for invitations and opportunities in the new year.

Journaling daily gratitudes, finding ways to bless others, eating many more veggies with every meal, and of course riding my horse more often in 2022! Happy New Year everyone!

A Life of Honor and Service Sen. Marshall Says Bob Dole was ‘Forever a Kansan’ Written by Amy Palser

In the month since Kansas native and longtime U.S. senator Bob Dole passed away, his family, friends and colleagues from both sides of the aisle have mourned and remembered a man who knew how to compromise in the best of ways, and who never forgot where he came from. Dole, who was born and raised in Russell, Kansas, about 120 miles northwest of Wichita, died Dec. 5, 2021, at the age of 98. Ten months earlier he announced he had been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. He is survived by his wife, former U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole, and daughter Robin. Gravely injured in World War II at the age of 21, Dole went on to serve in the House of Representatives, followed by five terms in the U.S. Senate, and made three losing bids for the presidency. But despite becoming an important American figure, he remained humble, making it a personal goal to touch one person’s life each day. “Senator Dole always imparted the best advice to me, which was to ‘always remember where you are from,’ ” said U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. “He was forever a Kansan who always put service above self and was profoundly dedicated to bettering the lives of all those in our great state.” While his service to his country both on the battlefield and in Washington was noble, the second half of his life was dedicated to veterans and to remembering them through the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. In 1997 Dole took over as the national chairman of the fundraising campaign for the memorial, and helped raise over $190 million. The memorial was completed and dedicated in 2004, and Dole was a frequent visitor to the site.

“Most every Saturday he spent the morning here welcoming folks in the Honor Flights and any veterans who came by,” Marshall said during a wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial shortly after Dole’s death. Born in 1923 in rural Russell, Dole was a high school athlete who wanted to be a doctor. While serving in World War II, Dole took a hit from a German shell that shredded his right shoulder and left him temporarily paralyzed from the neck down. He lay on the battlefield for 10 hours after the injury. During an interview a few years ago, Dole choked up remembering how his friends at Dawson Drug Store in Russell passed around a cigar box for donations, then left it on the counter for customers to contribute. He won two Purple Hearts for his injuries and a Bronze Star for heroic service. “I figured out that lying in bed the rest of my life was not an option,” Dole said in an interview. After 39 months in military hospitals, he finally left, moving to Tucson for a year before attending Washburn University in Topeka to pursue a law degree. It was there that a professor suggested he enter politics. Dole was known for his sense of humor, patience, and ability to make bipartisan deals. As a Republican, he advocated for lower taxes and smaller government while supporting civil and disability rights. He was a champion of compromise, said supporters and critics alike. “While he had incredible negotiating skills and was tough as nails, it was his huge heart and ability to work across the aisle that constantly led the way and delivered results for all Americans,’’ Marshall said. “For him, it was always more than politics; it was about being a positive influence for our nation and the world. There is no doubt, Laina and I are blessed to consider him as one of our greatest role models, a mentor, and a dear friend.”

Q. What do you miss most about being a paramedic? A. This is a tough question to answer because there are so

many elements I miss about being a paramedic. The people that I worked with were some of the best healthcare providers in the country. Working beside paramedics in Sedgwick County and Eagle Med every day, I learned to make a positive change in the lives of the patients we cared for. Many times there were difficult situations, but we always prioritized the best interests of the citizens we served. That experience set the tone for the rest of my career in healthcare.

Q. Has there been a mentor who helped you along the

way as you’ve become a prominent leader within the medical community?

A. I’ve been very fortunate to have worked with several

individuals throughout my healthcare career who have helped frame my leadership management positives and learn from what not to do. During my time in the senior care industry, I can’t put a price on the education I have received from my father-in-law Brian Warren. He has instilled in me the true meaning of being a “servant leader.”

Q. Do those experiences as a frontline healthcare worker

shape the way you lead and manage your organization?

A. Absolutely! I was told once that viewing the world in

healthcare behind a desk is a dangerous place to lead from. With that being said, I always try to be present with our frontline workers and make sure I listen to every need and want, and make decisions based on their input. The most important people in our organization are our employees. Without the best quality employee we can’t perform the best quality care.

Q. Are you planning an expansion in the near future? A. We are currently developing three Home Plus senior care

homes in Manhattan, Kansas, along with a memory care addition to one of our existing assisted living communities. Our company is always looking to the future to develop the next evolution in senior care. This industry is not a one-sizefits-all. Individualized care is key to desired outcomes and satisfaction. We are all unique and have different wants and interests, and as generations age the culture changes. A perfect example is ice cream parlors were very popular for those individuals that grew up in the 40’s and 50’s. Now we have clients that desire technology, personal rooms and sports bars.

Q. Having gone to both KU and WSU, who do you cheer for if they play each other in a basketball game?

A. Well, I always mention to folks that I had a cup of

coffee at KU but I graduated from WSU. I cheer them both on, but if they were to play each other in the near future that would be a hard one!

The Significance of Inflation In the normal course of life, most people don’t stop and think about inflation. Yes, we are accustomed to seeing occasional price changes such as when fuel prices fluctuate at the pump with the current state of world events. But when the price of everything that we purchase is going up, we begin to realize inflation’s impact on our daily lives. Inflation can indeed have a significant impact on future income planning, especially for those that are in retirement or nearing retirement.

you address the impact of inflation, but it can also help you address other threats to a successful retirement. This financial plan is not a “one and done” document. Instead, it should be a living, breathing blueprint that is constantly updated to reflect your current situation. Only then can you make sure that your plan and your retirement stays on track.

Historical Inflation We have enjoyed very modest inflation in this country for the past 20 to 30 years. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks inflation and has done so since 1913. In 2020, the inflation rate was only about 1.2 percent. For the past 10 years, the average inflation rate was a mere 1.7 percent and for the past 20 years, the average inflation rate was 2.1 percent. The long-term average inflation rate in this country all the way back to 1913 has been 3.2 percent. Today, we are seeing inflation hit its highest levels in 40 years. Last year, the inflation rate climbed to near 7 percent. Those on a fixed income are the hardest hit by rising inflation. They don’t have the ability to earn more money after they retire and social security cost-of-living adjustments rarely keep up with the true costs of inflation. Even if you are fortunate enough to have a pension, most employer pensions don’t have a cost-of-living adjustment at all. So, higher inflation rates place a significant burden on a retiree’s finances and will erode their savings over time, especially when interest rates are at all-time lows.

Financial Plan Needed Inflation rates can have a significant impact on long-range income planning. In a “normal” inflation environment of 3 percent, your future income needs will double in about 23 years. But, at the current inflation levels, your future income needs could double in as little as 10 years! The graph illustrates the impact of inflation rates on your future income needs. Will you have enough money to last your entire retirement if these inflation rates persist? If you don’t have a comprehensive financial plan, you may be left guessing whether or not you will run out of money before you run out of life. A good financial plan can not only help 16

Bottom Line When embarking upon the journey we call retirement, many people don’t do proper planning. In fact, some don’t do any planning at all. They tend to fly by the seat of their pants with wishful thinking. A “hope and a prayer” is not a financial plan! If you don’t currently have a comprehensive financial plan that includes long-range income planning, you may be in for a big surprise as you get toward the end of your retirement. If you are worried about the impact of inflation on your current situation, find a qualified financial planning firm that you can trust to help you evaluate the impact of inflation and other threats on your retirement success. Remember, the solution is a plan, not some financial product!

Two Migraine Drugs Face Off in New Study Written by Amy Palser

AMR Investigator Calls Trial ‘Winning Proposition’ for Participants New drugs have made a world of difference for people who suffer from the debilitating effects of migraines. But which of these marvels works best? A study being done at AMR aims to find out. Dr. Michael Rausch, primary investigator at the AMR branch in El Dorado, said this is an unusual study in that it pits two drugs currently on the market headto-head. One of the drugs is injectable and the other is in tablet form. Both are known to be very effective at treating or preventing migraines with virtually no side effects. “Both are superior to what we’ve had in the past,” Rausch said. “This is an unusual study in that you compare two good products. There’s going to be a winner and a loser – but the real winner is the participant, because they get to try a medication that is known to be effective at no cost to themselves.” Both medications are fairly expensive, but participants in the drug trial will receive one of the two drugs at no cost. Participants will also receive compensation for taking part in the study. AMR is currently recruiting candidates aged 18 and up who suffer from migraines. “We want people who are naive to the medication, so if you’ve already been exposed to these medications you may not be eligible,” Rausch said. “But you may still be eligible for other migraine studies that are ongoing.” Rausch said there is no placebo in this study, so participants are guaranteed to receive a known, effective drug that treats migraines. However, the blind study is designed so that participants won’t know which drug they’re receiving. “The interesting thing is, they will appear to get both drugs. They’ll get a fake shot and a real pill, or a real shot and a fake pill,” said Rausch, a physician at Rausch Medical Clinics in Augusta and El Dorado. He said that his team at AMR was involved in the trial for one of the two products several years ago and helped bring it to market, so Rausch knows how effective it is. “I’ve used it quite a bit, and I’m more biased toward the one I know because I have firsthand knowledge of it. But the other is extremely effective as well,” he said. “If you haven’t been exposed to the newer medications for your migraines, this is a nice way to get paid to get to use a known, effective product. Anybody involved in this study will be a winner, no matter which drug they receive. It’s a winning proposition.” 18

the importance of responsibility and education, and I think Karla’s strengths came from the belief that her mother had in her girls – that they would amount to these incredible human beings.” These were all messages that Karla internalized, as exhibited when she eventually returned to Wichita in later years to help care for her mother, a move Bumgardner calls “incredibly mature, compassionate and kind.” He goes on to say: “Whenever she was asked what legacy she wanted to leave, Karla would quickly answer with the following words: ‘That I did my best, and I let God do the rest,’ and she lived her life that way.”

Karla Burns The singer and actress Karla Burns dominated stages from Wichita, Kansas, across the U.S. and all the way to Broadway and London’s West End. She was nominated for an Emmy and went on to win an Olivier Award, Britain’s highest theater honor, the first Black entertainer to do so. She brought to life characters such as Bloody Mary in “South Pacific,” Dolly Levi in “Hello Dolly” and her signature role, Queenie in “Show Boat.” Burns died June 4, 2021, after a prolonged illness at the age of 66. Rick Bumgardner, artistic director of Roxy’s Downtown, met Burns through a mutual friend and they quickly formed a connection. He went on to direct her in productions of “Hello Dolly,” “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane,” “The Wiz” and more. When asked what Burns was like backstage Bumgardner says, “It was the same personality … She was larger than life; that’s the best way to describe her on stage and off.” Bumgardner also directed Burns in the one-woman musical, “Hi-Hat Hattie” based on the life of Hattie McDaniel of “Gone with the Wind” fame, who broke a color barrier in 1940 when she became the first African-American to win an Academy Award for best supporting actress. Burns was inspired by McDaniel, born in 1893, who was also a Wichita native and lived just 10 blocks from where Burns grew up. To every role she played Burns brought a riveting presence – but also a sense of dignity and strength. “I think that came from her family, and from her mama specifically,” says Bumgardner. “Her daddy died when she was 7 years old. You know, Mama Burns took over the helm of the family at that point. She talked to her daughters about 20

Britt Fulmer “He didn’t make any money because he spent everything he made on clothing,” Brenda Fulmer says, laughing, when speaking of her husband Britt Fulmer’s very first job in men’s fashion. But over 66 years of life, Britt would go on to distinguish himself as the owner of a successful business, Gentry Ltd., and build a reputation for being honest, kind, classy and fun. He passed away June 28, 2021, after a battle with cancer. So many of Britt’s patrons became his friends, Brenda says. “I think he so appreciated the relationships, and it wasn’t about selling anybody anything. He said, ‘I have such a vast variety of people I get to meet and be involved in their lives – how lucky am I to have friends with so many different interests?’ ” Together Britt and Brenda had two daughters, Lauren and Morgan. As VP of finance at Gentry Ltd., Brenda had the opportunity to work with her husband and witness his character up close. “He was just honest. He’d say: ‘I’m going to face God and be responsible for my actions.’ So integrity and fairness were at the top of his values.”

“She was probably the head salesperson in any market,” says her husband Gregg Vance. “When she walked into a room she knew everybody; she knew your family, your kids. She knew everything about you.” Margaret was awarded her bachelor’s degree in speech and journalism from Creighton University and later became part of the “Media B’s” club in Wichita. She was known by her childhood nickname, “Squeaky,” and was famous for her legendary holiday decorations, especially at Halloween. In fact, it was haunted houses that brought Margaret and Gregg together, and they continued creating them for 20 years, adding more family members to their work force as the years went on, including Margaret’s children Lezlee and Madison from a previous marriage, and Hunter, her son with Gregg. “The kids loved working the haunted houses,” says Gregg. “All the cousins were there, all the nieces and nephews worked there, it was a big family thing we did every year.” The venture even generated enough profit to donate to charity.

Britt inherited a love of music from his mother who was an Italian country-western singer and national yodeling champion. He and his cousins formed a band when he was 10 – and Britt continued forming them throughout his life, playing the bass in local bands Grateful Not To Be Dead, Three Ring Circus and Deja Vu. Parker Mitchell, former employee and current owner of Gentry Ltd. says, “I was lucky to not only be his friend, but also his mentee, buying the store from him a little over three years ago … Britt taught me that, yeah, we’re in the business of selling clothes – it’s easy to buy clothes anywhere – but what it’s really about is building relationships and providing extraordinary customer service unlike anywhere else.

Although Margaret gave herself the title, “The Greatest Salesperson in The Universe,” she was nonchalant about official honors and recognitions. “She has plaques and stuff all over the place; we just found them in a box not too long ago,” says Gregg. “She was never boisterous about stuff like that.” Before she died, Margaret and Gregg collaborated on a trophy for The Greatest Salesperson in The Universe, which will now be awarded annually to the best salesperson at KWCH 12. In addition to her three children, Margaret doted on five grandchildren who called her “GiGi.” When asked what her guiding principles were in life, Gregg didn’t hesitate. “Family and friends come first.”

Toeing The Line to Health Central Kansas Podiatry Associates The feet are the part of the body furthest from the heart, receiving the least supply of blood, oxygen, nutrients – and sometimes our attention as well. But for some people, paying special attention to the feet is critical, according to podiatrist Dr. Benjamin Weaver, DPM, owner of Central Kansas Podiatry Associates. Diabetics, seniors and those with vascular insufficiency are at particular risk for complications of the feet. “And if you don’t stay on top of it, they can get bad very quickly,” says Dr. Weaver. Coming from a non-surgical philosophy, the doctor finds that – with proper education, wound care and leading technology – surgery can be prevented 99 percent of the time.

Diabetics and Neuropathy Diabetics have a special challenge, because the disease causes both retinopathy in the eyes and peripheral neuropathy in the feet, leading to waning visual acuity and progressive loss of sensation in the feet, respectively. “If you can’t see it, and you can’t feel it, you’ve got a problem,” says the doctor. “A lot of patients don’t really know they have a wound until they see drainage on their sock or the floor.” Prevention and education are key, so it’s critical for the patient to follow a treatment plan: “You need to examine your feet on a daily basis, because if we catch something minor it’s easy to fix. But when it’s full blown it’s a lot harder to heal.” Preventing diabetic foot ulcers greatly reduces the risk of lower limb amputations.

Feet Tech Dr. Weaver founded his practice 20 years ago, and to celebrate this milestone Central Kansas Podiatry Associates will be moving into a new building at 21st and Greenwich, planned for April of 2022. He speaks highly of his seven team members, saying, “I give them kudos because they’re top notch. They make the practice shine, and make my job a lot easier.” With the move, the doctor will continue to focus on “preventative foot care or foot wellness.” Thanks to some high-tech innovation, the doctor and staff are able to monitor a literal heat map of patients’ feet on a day-to-day basis, tracking blood flow and exposing any inflammation, tissue damage or vascular compromise in the very earliest stages. These ultra-sensitive devices track up to 10,000 points in the feet, sensing minute changes in temperature that could indicate a degrading wound or vascular insufficiency. Patients who use these technologies can have up to 86 percent fewer wounds or potentially save insurance companies an average of $7,000 a year per patient. For everyone – and especially those over 50 – being acutely aware of foot health can only improve overall wellbeing. “Most people go to the dentist at least twice a year and visit the eye doctor once a year,” says Dr. Weaver. ”Your feet are just as important.”

Vascular Compromise “Most people who have had heart problems, a stent or a balloon, should probably have their feet and legs examined,” says Dr. Weaver. “It’s kind of like rotating your tires or changing your oil. It’s preventative maintenance.” You don’t have to be diabetic to have vascular compromise, and most circulatory problems show up in the feet and legs first, before impacting the heart.

Weathering Life’s Storms I’m often struck by the wonder that some of the people who have the greatest trials and hardships are often the most peace-filled and grateful people I know. Perhaps they are more apt to appreciate what they do have. Perhaps they know something that we don’t. Such was the case with a friend of mine who owned a small coffee shop that I frequented while living in Kona, Hawaii, in the 1990s. Ronald Swisher was only in his 40s when we met, but looked much older and hobbled around as he provided service for his customers. His deformed body was the result of an aggressive form of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis that struck him suddenly while he was in his teens. During one of our visits at his coffee shop, he shared a poem that he had written while looking out a plane window as he crossed over the Grand Canyon. He saw a small, twisted little tree on top of a rocky cliff and related to its plight – considering not only its lack, but its opportunity. His words live on in me. I hope they encourage you in the year ahead.

OpportuniTrees There are trees that grow in valleys and near the fertile swamp. They grow fast, straight and beautiful where God’s playful creatures romp. They never know adversity as they thrive in sun and rain. These trees can’t learn the lessons God teaches us through pain. And then there are the twisted stumps that survive the mountain tops. These trees must struggle through the stone and winds that never stop. There aren’t as many survive here as in the valley down below. But those that make it, be assured, won’t topple when the bad winds blow. And so our lives can be compared to these two kinds of trees. Sometimes we’re stronger and better off when brought down to our knees. If your life is like the first tree, spread your arms and offer aid. You can shelter in the winter; in the summer provide shade. God has given you a good life; show your thanks to Him for all. But be careful – sink your roots deep; so in life’s storms you don’t fall. If your life is like the second tree, be careful not to hate. Your body may be twisted, but your mind can still be straight. You must go with faith in God; be thankful you’re alive. Crave Beauty Academy, a Cut Above the Competition Q. What inspired you to go into the cosmetology industry?

A. As an only child, I spent a great deal of time falling in

love with movies and motion picture magic. I found an affinity for many different areas: painting, make-up, hair creations, visual creativity. In addition to the opportunity to explore my creativity, I absolutely love helping people feel good about themselves and see themselves as beautiful and attractive.

Q. What was your deciding factor for choosing Crave?

A. A former boss and several friends had tried other places, and I considered those options, but Crave felt like a fit for me. Everyone here is so welcoming and organized, and what they teach and share covers the bases of what I’m interested in exploring. Centrally located at Douglas and West Street, there are 75 to 100 students. That also appealed to me – not too large and not too small. Schooling is 1,500 hours for completion of the program, and students may accomplish this at various paces, full time or part time.

Q. What do you enjoy about the Academy? A. I love the sense of collaboration. Teachers and students

are continually helping each other, inspiring one another to stretch creatively. For example, I might be learning a specific haircut or process, and opportunities may arise to assist someone else or for someone else to share a technique that helps me do the best job possible for my client. So I’m constantly learning while working, as well as helping. Everyone here is intentional and invested in learning and teaching. Also, our clients realize we’re learning and developing our skills, so they are typically very patient and allow us to take time with them.

Q. What would you suggest to any future

three to five years; what are your goals and aspirations?

A. In three years I hope to have built a full-time clientele

base, working six days a week. By the five-year mark, I still hope to be helping people four days a week, possibly working at a salon of my own here in the Wichita area.

A future dream would be to own a salon that specializes in events. Important life events like a wedding, an anniversary celebration, maybe a bachelorette party, prom night or a birthday call for specific attention to detail, plus timing and support. These can be stressful times or can be more relaxed and enjoyed if someone else is assisting with the creative details. I value supporting women and helping alleviate unnecessary stress in these important moments. My experience in event planning as well as the skill set I’m developing now in cosmetology inspires me to continue in these pursuits.

Q. Who are you in a nutshell?

Q. What is your dream collaboration in your career?

A. I am a believer in the unconditional redemptive love and person of Jesus, a husband, a dad to six, a proud native of Iowa, and the co-founder of Wonder. I am a lover of history and of the values that built Western civilization and believe that most answers to problems that face us today can be found in the wisdom of the past – which we are quickly and perilously dispensing with.

A. We’ve had some amazing collaborations at Wonder including with our primary partner school Acton Academy in Austin, NuVu at MIT, and with Elon Musk’s Ad Astra School at SpaceX. We haven’t thought much about new collaborations but I hear Kanye is starting a school — I will be interested to see how his mind reimagines education. I’d love to be in those meetings.

Q. What is Wonder and what do you do there? A. Wonder is the school we all wish we could have had as children. The magic of Hogwarts paired with the trust and responsibility of self-governance. Rather than being focused on memorizing information, learners at Wonder set out to solve real problems while managing their learning journey and setting goals for themselves every week. We help learners think critically, write clearly and speak powerfully. We call ourselves a “learner-driven community,” as we put as much responsibility and power in the hands of young people as we can – and do everything we possibly can to get the adults out of the way. We truly believe every child who walks through our doors is a hero on a journey to find his or her calling and change the world.

Q. What were you like as a kid and what did you want to be when you grew up?

Q. Do you have any side projects you’re working on? A. Over 120 years ago my great-great-grandfather, Frederick Lahn, came to America from Germany as a boy and homesteaded on 160 acres in Iowa with his uncle Hans. My family owned that property until 2005 when it was sold. In 2014, I was able to purchase the homestead back into the Lahn family. We are now restoring it back to its original state. It’s our kids’ favorite place to spend time and a really special project. In 2019, I co-founded a search fund. We equip high-caliber, high-integrity young entrepreneurs to take on leadership roles in companies we acquire. We recently purchased an outof-state manufacturing company and we have now moved almost all manufacturing to Wichita.

Q. Do you have a talent that you consider useless? A. Debating. It’s a skill I always thought was valuable until my wife made it very clear that it is useless.

A. My elementary school principal once said that if he was ever stuck on a desert island he would want to be with me as I would find a way off. That wasn’t exactly a compliment but rather a nice way of saying to my parents that I had far too much energy and was very enterprising.

I always wanted to be a fighter pilot as both of my grandpas were pilots and my dad instilled in me a deep reverence for the courage of those who fought in WWII, especially the courage of aviators.

Q. What’s the most unusual job you’ve had? A. Excavator operator in the oil sands boom town of Fort McMurray in Alberta.

before the Minor League Baseball season was canceled due to the pandemic. Schwechheimer passed away three months later, before he got a chance to see a game played at the new stadium. Wife Jane, who remains a general partner of Wind Surge, said the Boy Scouts were an important part of her husband’s life and who he was. A local community leader got him involved in Boy Scout Troop 31 in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and he earned his Eagle Scout badge on Nov. 19, 1973. His continued support of and involvement with the Boy Scouts as an adult earned him the “Good Scout” award in 2009 by the Annawon Council in Norton, Massachusetts.

For Lou Schwechheimer, it was always about baseball and Boy Scouts – and those two passions often converged.

“He had boundless energy and a way with people that you don’t see often,” Jane said. “He was always looking out for others. I have to think that it was a combination of his makeup and finding the Boy Scouts that clicked for him. The ability to think through problems and challenges, ask for advice, listen, and store it all away until he needed it was something Lou was good at. Schwechheimer, the managing general partner of Wichita Wind Surge and the man who made Wichita’s Riverfront Stadium a reality, passed away in 2020 from complications related to Covid at the age of 62. But the baseball baron was also a proud Eagle Scout and fostered relationships with area Boy and Girl Scout councils wherever he lived. For more than 25 years, Saturday night baseball games at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, ended with the popular Scout Sleepovers, an idea of Schwechheimer’s that became a summer tradition. He enjoyed a decorated 37-year career with the Pawtucket Red Sox, including a long stint as the club’s general manager from 1986 to 2015. He then formed a group that purchased two minor league franchises, including the New Orleans Zephyrs, which was rebranded as the Baby Cakes before moving to Wichita in 2019 and becoming Wind Surge. Schwechheimer oversaw the construction of the new Riverfront Stadium in Wichita’s downtown, which planned to host its first game on April 14, 2020,

Q. What does a water softener do? A. A water softener “softens” a home’s

your skin clogs pores and dries out your skin and hair. When cleaning with soft water, your skin won’t dry out because it allows your soaps and shampoos to rinse thoroughly off of your skin and hair. Since hardness minerals are essentially pieces of rock, rubbing your fingers together under a stream of soft water without the abrasive materials in hard water will have less friction. This is what clean feels like!

This makes it easier to clean your home and laundry, keeps pipes from clogging and corroding, is gentler on your family’s skin and hair, prolongs the life of water-using appliances, and saves you money on your water bill, repairs and cleaning products over the life of the softener.

Q. Do I need a reverse osmosis system for my drinking water if I already have a water softener?

A. Many people who install a water softener also elect

Q. How hard is Wichita water? A. Each water source tests differently, but Wichita

municipal water tests around 10 to 12 grains per gallon (GPG), with many of the surrounding areas testing even higher, especially private wells. Anything over 7 GPG is considered hard water, anything over 10 GPG is considered very hard.

Q. Does a water softener actually add salt to your water?

A. Water softeners actually do not

add any salt to your water. The water softening process breaks down the salt to use its sodium. A special media stored in a mineral tank makes this process possible. That media is charged with sodium ions, which replace the hard minerals in your water.

Q. Why does my skin feel slippery after

showering with soft water from a water softener?

A. If you’ve been using hard water your entire life, the first

time that you take a bath or a shower in newly softened water you may notice that it feels different. Compared to hard water, soft water creates a different sensation on your skin, one that’s often described as “slippery.” That’s because people are used to using hard water, which makes soap scum cling to your skin and can actually make it more difficult to clean off. The excess residue left on

A softener and an RO system are a great combination because, while the softener gives you soft water throughout the entire home by removing minerals that make your water hard, an RO system gives your household outstanding drinking water by removing most impurities (including hydrocarbons, sulfates, cadmium, pesticides and more). The membrane in the system is what removes this and purifies the water to bottled-water quality. Reverse osmosis removes 90 to 98 percent of the total dissolved solids (TDS) in the water.

Q. I have a Brita filter, faucet filter or refrigerator filter. Isn’t this the same or good enough?

A. Depends on the quality of drinking water you want.

These other filters might make the water taste better but in no way “purify” the water. We actually test the TDS of the water filters you are using to see what quality it is providing you with for drinking water. The WQA (Water Quality Association) and EPA set standards for quality of drinking water. To be considered bottledwater quality it must be under 50 ppm. We usually see that the results are actually just a little lower than the city water before it’s filtered (so the filter really isn’t doing much good). In some cases, if you don’t keep up on changing the filters as recommended the TDS will actually test higher than the city water because it’s become clogged. So to answer the question, no, a refrigerator filter is not the same as a reverse osmosis system for true bottle-quality, purified drinking water.

This is the story of Phil Davis. Growing up in Wichita, Phil spent endless hours watching and helping his dad repair televisions and radios, and by age 6 he began soldering parts borrowed from his dad.
