My favorite toy that I truly believed was personally delivered by Santa was my Living Baby Tender Love doll. I loved her so much. Little did I know, this was a start to a lifetime of loving and caring for babies.

One Christmas morning in the 1970s, I was delighted to open a ginormous gift and discover my very own plush, pink bean bag chair! My parents had weighed the box down with bricks to throw me off the scent, and it worked.

My favorite would probably be my Cabbage Patch Kid. I think her name was Nora. I remember she had blonde hair and I carried her around everywhere.

My favorite was an all-in-onestereo with a record player, radio and dual cassette tape players. It was so big! I still have it.

One thing is for sure: Wichita has a gold mine of cute kids. Each holiday season we at SPLURGE! are faced with the seemingly impossible task of choosing a winner for the Our Cover, Your Kid contest from the many, many entries we receive. Sometimes we wonder if we should toss all of the photos into the air and see which one lands at our feet – it would ease our sleepless nights and still give us those cherubic cheeks and sparkling eyes we’re all longing to see on our December issue. Even narrowing the competition to our five finalists is painstaking. We helped ourselves out a bit in recent years by staggering the age groups. This year’s contestants had to be between the ages of 1 and 5. Next year, it will be ages 6 to 12. So those of us behind the scenes who have been flipping between countless cuties want you to know that we are smitten: Whether they made the finals or not, your children and grandchildren are beautiful, and we wish we could give each of them their own magazine cover. However, then we’d have to call our longstanding contest “Our Covers, Your Kids,” and that would bring a logistical challenge all its own. So here, we announce in alphabetical order, the four runners-up of the 2021 Our Cover, Your Kid contest:

When 2-year-old Knox Ngo heard the news from his mom that he had won the SPLURGE! Our Cover, Your Kid contest, he shouted, “I am the champion!” Mom Rachelle Ngo said that with three older siblings, Knox is competitive, fearless and catches on to everything. “He gets away with a lot and is taught a lot more than he probably should be,” she said with a laugh. Knox has a special fondness for his oldest sibling, Ashton, who plays football at Hutchinson Community College. “He wants to wrestle and play football just like Ashton,” she said. Knox won the judges’ hearts with his darling face, sharp haircut, and the twinkle in his eye. His myriad of poses during the photo shoot made for some adorable shots, but definitely had Mom worried. “He was sticking out his tongue, trying to throw peace signs,” she said, laughing. “Welcome to being the youngest.” Knox was dressed to kill in a chambray shirt, red pants, red bowtie, and Christmas tree suspenders. The icing on the cake was his white penny loafers. “On the day he got them, his grandma was telling him how they used to put a penny in the slot, and he insisted on putting a penny in there,” she said. “So those pennies have been in there since the first day he got the shoes.” Rachelle said her other kids – Ashton, 18; Kali, 16; and Lakkyn, 11 – keep their little brother looking sharp. “With him being the youngest, the other kids are always grabbing things for him and keeping him in style,” she said. “Knox will wear anything.” Knox is very lovey and a snuggler, Rachelle said. He’s intelligent and likes to learn new information on YouTube. These days he’s into Spider-Man and cooking. “He has a new play kitchen and we ordered him the little chef outfit,” she said. “Out of all of our kids, he’s probably the only one who has ever played by himself and can keep himself entertained.” No doubt he’s busy keeping everyone else entertained, too. Knox is the son of Rachelle and Chris Ngo of Andover. Grandparents are Lisa Brichalli, Scott Yoxall, Cindy Dunlap and the late Thinh Ngo.

Keeping the Peace It’s the most wonderful time of the year. I believe most people want to experience joy in the holiday season by making memories and spending quality time with family and friends. But that singular goal often gets choked out by a very full social calendar, pressure to fulfill long-standing traditions, and an expectation to keep up with the Joneses. They say comparison is the thief of joy, and you’d be surprised how often comparison and perceived expectations can creep into the holiday and rob that joy completely. It comes in sneaky ways: Feeling the pressure to attend an event you don’t have an interest in, or maybe just don’t have the time for. Fear of missing a holiday party that it seems “everyone else” will attend. The need to keep up with friends, family or even social media influencers and their ambitious holiday tasks like decorating, Christmas-card mailing or cookie-baking. Don’t let the “shoulds” of the season ruin it for you and your family. Constantly comparing ourselves to others can lead to unhappiness and dissatisfaction; the same goes for comparing the current holiday season to a past one. These are selfdestructive habits. To overcome this, it’s first important to be aware of any negative comparison self-talk. Only then can we develop the

ability to stop it the minute we start to think along those lines, and recognize that our happiness is not dependent on anything external. You can use comparison in a good way, as motivation to make positive changes in yourself, realizing you are the only one you are in control of, anyway. It’s also important to identify perceived expectations and realize that you are not responsible for someone else’s happiness. The mental and physical health and wholeness of yourself and your family should be a priority during this demanding season. It’s OK to say no to events, plans or tasks that simply add stress or remove peace. Keep it simple this season. Make memories. Spend quality time with the people you love. And truly make it the most wonderful time of the year.

Hope for t he Holidays As the holiday season approaches, we become keenly aware of our community, family members and friends. We anticipate joyful gatherings and time spent in the company of loved ones. And we consider ways to pay forward our blessings and reach out to those in need. Charles Dickens said of Christmas that it is a time, above all others, “when Want is keenly felt and Abundance rejoices.” That poignant point made long ago resonates today within the Wichita community. And special non-profit agencies and organizations work every day to extend a helping hand and hope to those among us who are in need, those who could use a little help this holiday season. “If you’re in recovery from substance abuse disorder and have the desire to live sober, we will help you find strength and a new community of friends to support your community,” states the website of The Phoenix, a “free sober active community.” Its founder and board member, Scott Strode, traveled a road from addiction to recovery in his mid-twenties. Struggling with addiction, he joined a local boxing and climbing gym. There he found something remarkable: a community of people in recovery who used strength training and a sense of community to support each other and help each other to a life of sobriety. Strode shares that what he found there helped create a shift in his mindset, one day stronger, one day filled with healthy habits and renewed hope. Through personal fitness and common goals, The Phoenix strives to provide the perfect support system for those navigating recovery. It’s an atmosphere of positivity, acceptance, respect and affirmation. In Wichita, it is located at 145 N. Wabash in a beautiful facility funded by the Koch Family. Another program that supports the community is Hope is Alive Ministries. It provides sober house living for people in recovery. Drug free, residents can live in these beautiful homes for up to 18 months. Nested in nicely maintained residential areas, they create a safe, comfortable place to live while working through

recovery, finding employment opportunities and often, creating a new life for themselves. It is faith supported yet anyone is welcome and invited to find hope in this opportunity. Affiliated with Hope is Alive is the program Hope After Loss. Addiction is unpredictable and often heartbreaking for addicts and their family members. Hope After Loss supports parents who have lost a child to addiction. In this situation, parents not only feel loss but hopelessness and guilt. This support group allows parents to process their child’s death with others who have experienced this unspeakable loss and to draw strength in this loving community of people. Additionally, Finding Hope supports other family members of addicts: spouses, siblings and children. They, too, need to navigate the grief and loss, and it helps tremendously to know that they are not alone in the process. For help this holiday season, folks can turn to HumanKind Ministries. They have served our community for more than sixty years and have shown holiday spirit by extending a helping hand with their ministries. Throughout the year, they host fundraising events and gather volunteer community members to provide for individuals and families in Wichita’s largest holiday assistance program, Operation Holiday.

Serving our region’s most vulnerable residents, they will assist thousands of residents by providing and distributing basic necessities that every human being needs. Holidays can be difficult for those barely getting by, and what Operation Holiday provides – food, food vouchers, pet food and blankets, along with children’s coats and winter accessories – offers something very special in the way of support, peace of mind and relief in a stressful time. They also partner with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve to facilitate the Toys for Tots program. Operation Holiday 2021 distribution takes place Wednesday, Dec. 15 through Saturday, Dec. 18. Another organization that embraces and partners with the community is The Salvation Army. Their commitment transcends social barriers, and their inclusion will extend a hand to any individual regardless of age, religious affiliation, disability, ethnicity or any other area that may, in some cases, find resistance based on discrimination. Their goal is to provide help to anyone who is in need. As the effects of the pandemic continue to plague and hinder some community members, The Salvation Army strives to serve and support people physically, emotionally and spiritually by assisting through homeless shelters, transitional housing and permanent supportive housing options.

Trial Vaccine Looks to Curb Virus’ Lingering Joint Pain Mosquito-born virus common in Africa, Asia, India, Caribbean Some of the life-saving treatments being studied by Wichita research facility AMR are for diseases that may not be common in America, but wreak havoc in other parts of the world. That’s the case with chikungunya, a mosquito-borne viral disease that can cause severe and lingering joint pain. The Alliance for Multispecialty Research is studying the efficacy of a trial chikungunya vaccine. Researchers hope the vaccine will provide a solution to the virus that currently has no treatment other than trying to manage symptoms. Those who have contracted chikungunya start experiencing symptoms like fever, headache, malaise, gastrointestinal irritations and joint aches within three to seven days. It usually resolves in one to two weeks. Like other viruses, those at most risk are infants and those 65 and older. “About 90 percent of those with the virus get the joint aches, but 40 percent get persistent joint aches that last for months if not years,” said Terry Klein, a family physician at Family Medicine East in Wichita and a partner in AMR. The name “chikungunya” derives from a word in the Kimakonde language (southeast Tanzania and northern Mozambique) meaning “to become contorted” – describing the stooped appearance of sufferers with joint pain, according to the World Health Organization. Chikungunya is found worldwide, particularly in Africa, Asia, and India, and was first identified during a 1952 outbreak in southern Tanzania. It’s extremely rare in the United States, with fewer than 1,000 cases per year. While not a danger in

the U.S., the virus can threaten Americans traveling to warm places like the Caribbean. Prevention is key, Klein said, so that means using mosquito nets and covering body parts. “Wearing long sleeves and pants in those warmer climates where these mosquitoes reside – basically dressing for a colder climate – is not always desirable in a warm climate,” he said. Researchers have been working on a vaccine for chikungunya since 2016, and it’s now in the third phase, which means the vaccine has had desirable effects in the first two phases and is ready to be widely tested on the general public. He said 99 percent of those receiving the vaccine have produced the desired antibodies for chikungunya. “The antibodies stay with them for at least a year, which has been shown already,” he said. “We believe the vaccine will be tolerated well, and create the effectiveness you’re looking for.” AMR is currently enrolling participants between the ages of 12 and 64 years for the drug study. Participants will be compensated and monitored for six to nine months. There is a one in seven chance that participants will receive a placebo. “Often we’re developing vaccinations for other countries, but since the mosquitoes are in the Caribbean, it makes it a little closer to home,” Klein said. “There’s optimism that we will have a good quality product.”

What is CHIKUNGUNYA? Chikungunya (chik-un-GUN-yuh) is a viral illness transmitted by mosquitoes. The most common symptoms of infection are the sudden onset of fever and severe joint pain. There are currently no U.S. licensed vaccines to prevent chikungunya virus disease.

Are you eligible? You may be eligible to participate in the chikungunya vaccine clinical trial if: · you are between 12 and <65 years of age · you are in generally good health · you meet other study criteria

As the holiday season rolls around, we tend to take traditions such as Christmas dinner with family, opening lots of presents and spending time with loved ones for granted. It’s easy to overlook these holiday traditions that seem so normal. But not everyone is fortunate enough to experience these things. Along with gift-giving, the holiday season reminds us to give back. Now the Wichita community needs it more than ever – the pandemic has deeply impacted local non-profits. When planning your giving this season, consider local organizations such as these for inspiration.

Children First: CEO Kansas This organization is a 501(c)(3) social service non-profit serving children throughout Wichita in multiple programs. You can give back to this organization both by donating and volunteering your time. Another way to help is to donate your kids’ outgrown coats, shoes or other clothing (all are needed). Kansas Food Bank The Kansas Food Bank is always accepting donations of various food items. Other ways to help out this cause would be to donate your time by sorting or packaging donations in the warehouse located in Wichita. Q. How have you adjusted to life in Kansas after growing up in Q. With staffing shortages seemingly everywhere and Chattanooga, Tennessee, and how long have you now lived in Wichita?

A. I was born and raised in Tennessee, then spent three years

in southern Louisiana before relocating to Wichita in 2018. I’ll admit living in Kansas was definitely never on my radar, but after almost four years we couldn’t be happier with life in the Midwest. We still laugh about dialect differences, sweet tea is not a standard beverage and the wind still catches us off guard! But we couldn’t say enough about the culture and quality of life – my family and I are super happy here in Wichita.

especially in the healthcare sector, what are you and Wesley doing to recruit and retain talented teammates?

Q. Tell us a little bit about your journey with HCA and how you ended up becoming the CFO of Wesley?

A. When I graduated college, I wanted to be in healthcare

finance, and my first healthcare job was in long-term care with a 45-minute commute. After six years in long-term care, the birth of my second daughter and the desire for a shorter commute, I began my career with HCA in 2011. Over the next three years I continued to grow in my role and scope, joining our internal executive development program in 2014. Prior to my role at Wesley, I served as chief financial officer for an HCA hospital in southern Louisiana.

Q. As a role model to girls and young women, what advice would you give them as they seek out their dreams as business women and entrepreneurs?

A. At the end of the day, as cliché as it sounds, anything is

possible. I graduated college with the desire to be a hospital CFO “one day.” I met that goal when I was 32. Ensure that you have a mentor who knows your goals and is there to support your career ladder. Every day is a new opportunity to learn, we have to be teachable and growth minded. There’s no magic potion that substitutes for a strong work ethic or your character; show up with an eagerness to do your best.

Q. What hobbies do you enjoy outside of the office? A. I took up golf last year, and my current goal is to get my

handicap below my age so clearly I could use a lot more practice! My daughters both play competitive softball, and it keeps us at the ballfield or practice facility year round. We are also recent newbies to camping (or maybe I should use the term glamping), purchasing our first travel trailer a few months ago.

Tell us about your journey to mommy makeover surgery. PSC Patient: I had just gotten divorced, and I realized it was time to start caring for myself. I’d learned about a mommy makeover from a co-worker as well as social media. Several years ago, I had gastric bypass surgery, and it left me with a lot of hanging skin that I wanted to get rid of.

Describe the days after the procedure. PSC Patient: I was really in quite a lot of pain. I’m not a huge fan of pain medication, so I really tried to manage the pain mostly without it. After about two weeks, most of the pain was gone, and I had some discomfort.

When did you notice your results? PSC Patient: My swelling had really gone down by about the third week, and I was so happy when I noticed my results. They were amazing, especially my tummy tuck. By the sixth week, it was wonderful.

Are you happy with your results? PSC Patient: Yes! Even though I had a lot of pain, I am so glad I did it. I would do it again. I went down a whole clothing size. Before the surgery, I had learned how to hide my body, and now I don’t hide anything. It’s so freeing to be able to wear crop tops. I have way more self-esteem, and that’s why this surgery was worth it.

Do you have advice for people considering mommy makeover surgery? PSC Patient: Just do it. Make sure you have some help for a few weeks after the surgery. My self confidence is amazing now, and there are no words to really express how happy I am. When I look in the mirror, I can see such a difference.

Sharing Traditions and Spreading Holiday Cheer Written by Julie Underwood Burton

When not involved in a hands-on activity, residents and staff frequently gather to watch Christmas movies, or sing carols together while enjoying a cup of eggnog or apple cider. During Spirit Week, the staff dress up in holiday theme-for-a-day outfits, which brings lots of chuckles. In coordination with Derby Dash Public Transportation this year, residents will be able to board a transit bus to socialize with others and view the many beautiful holiday light displays throughout Wichita and neighboring communities. Crystal Norris, activity director at Reeds Cove Health & Rehabilitation, says “without a doubt Christmas is my favorite time of year.” One of the most meaningful activities planned include community outreach projects. This year during the holiday season, staff, residents and families will be donating “goodie bags” to the St. Francis Ministries Foster Kid program. Holiday tunes are piped in daily and the staff spreads Christmas cheer by wearing Santa hats. Each Friday leading up to Christmas Day, the staff even has an organized stroll up and down the halls singing carols to the residents and are often joined by local Girl Scouts and school choirs. With Covid-19 precautions in place last year, the carolers joyfully sang outside the resident’s windows.

As friends and family gather around the table this holiday, we remain mindful of those unable to join us. At the skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities of Axiom Healthcare Services, loved ones will undeniably have days filled with an array of meaningful holiday programs and honored traditions, thanks to a tremendously experienced and enthusiastic activities staff.

The residents at all three Axiom Healthcare facilities certainly play an important role in planning holiday events by attending their Resident Council and Care meetings. At Derby Health & Rehabilitation, activity director Heather Cannefax gets their residents involved by having a Holiday Reminiscence gathering where residents talk about and share their favorite holiday and family traditions with each other. Each year, favorites include baking and decorating cookies, gingerbread men and houses. Demetra Austin, life enrichment director at Family Health & Rehabilitation, also shared how their annual Thanksgiving dinner for residents and families is very popular among residents. From the candlelight dinner to a harpist for entertainment, to a maître d serving wine to a best-dressed turkey, this event is a particularly fond and moving memory for her every year. “It especially warms my heart to see the residents dressed in their Sunday best, awaiting visits from family members – some who travel to town just to spend this special evening with their loved one,” shares Austin.

“We are all like snowflakes, all different in our own beautiful way!” – Debbie (Garry’s family member) With Christmas rapidly approaching, an array of holiday parties are also planned by residents and staff including musical programs, inspirational visits and potluck gatherings. One special operation is the Adopt-aResident program where volunteers are recruited primarily through churches and schools to attend holiday parties, choir performances and other one-on-one activities with residents. Planning activities with residents has obviously presented challenges due to social distancing requirements. Some very creative ideas have included a drive-up Thanksgiving dinner for residents’ families, holiday caroling performances held outside on the patios, a virtual Christmas tour on the big screen, attending an online performance of the Nutcracker Ballet, and live Santa visits through the windows of residents.

Without a doubt, Cannefax, Norris and Austin, along with their staff, all have one shared common goal: to meet the residents’ needs and ensure every resident makes a special connection with loved ones, staff and others, and family traditions are never forgotten. Thanks to the leadership and commitment of these directors, the residents at each of Axiom Healthcare’s facilities certainly will feel they are “home for the holidays” and will have so much to celebrate this holiday season.

Unique Boutique Leaves Sweet Mark on Westside Market If you have ever been inside the shop known as Lavender Winks, you’ll probably feel like you’re making an unexpected new friend. Owners Joe and Lisa Winkles’ goal is to help you feel perfectly at home in their fresh, trendy and fun space.

For many years Lisa worked as a hairdresser, and she was able to have meaningful interactions every week in her own workspace. She retired from the profession when she was reunited with her high school love, Joe. Lisa found, however, that she missed getting to connect with her old friends and clients in that environment.

The shop has also fostered many community sponsorship opportunities, which includes Family Promise of Greater Wichita, Field of Dreams Uganda, and LifeWorks, a day service for special needs adults. Joe and Lisa have clearly striven to create a business with a fervent familial and community focus.

“I always loved running my haircutting business,” said Lisa, “and I thought it would be fun to have a ‘co-op’ working environment for massage therapists, photographers, etc. I wanted to have a creative outlet to sell things that my friends or I make, and get to refinish and create items. I missed getting to see clients and friends that I worked with, and the idea of the co-op was born out of all these desires.” Lavender Winks boutique certainly has achieved a fun and unique vibe. Gift items are chosen based on Lisa and Joe’s personal taste, including things like wooden signs with memorable quotes, boho earrings and other accessories, specialty wine bottle holders and backyard candles – all fitting into a category that is both eclectic and trendy. In addition to the carefully chosen merchandise, the store also includes a hair salon, massage therapist, eyelash extensions, spray tans, photography, painting classes, and a charming event space located above the shop and salon. There are currently 28 vendors who contribute to the store, many of whom are close friends to the couple. The merchandise must fit the “diverse and unique” stamp of the store, Lisa said. Lavender Winks is very clearly a passion project of the couple, especially Lisa. When asked about her favorite aspects of shop ownership, she responded, “I like so much of it. I love the decorating part of it, designing and creating the displays. I love 36

Wichita native Carolyn Stump’s favorite recipe is her famous Fruit Cake. She was given the recipe over 40 years ago, brought the recipe home, and tweaked it over the years to fit her family’s liking. Making this recipe was somet hing she enjoyed doing together with her husband. It becam e a tradition for the two of them to make it, along with other desserts, during the holidays. Though her husband has passe d, Carolyn still will make her family’s favorite Fruit Cake recipe whenever it is requested!

Fruit Cake

1 lb. candied cherries 1 lb. candied pineapple 1 lb. pitted dates 1 lb. shelled pecans

4 (3 1/2 oz) cans coconut or 2 (7 1/4 oz) boxes 3 tablespoons flour 2 (14 oz.) cans of sweetened condensed milk

Chop fruit and nuts in a large mixing bowl. Add cocon ut and mix well with hands. Add flour, mix, then add condensed milk. Mix well.

Pack firmly in 10-inch, lightly greased, springform tube cake pan with a bottom lined with greased brown paper. If desired, decorate the top with a few pecans and cherry halves. Bake at 300 degrees for 90 minutes. Remove from oven. Run a knife around the edge. When barely warm, remove from pan. Keeps indefinitely in the refrigerator, serve s 30 to 50.

‘The Nutcracker’ Reigns Again Ballet Wichita’s 47th Annual Production Brings the Magic This month Century II Concert Hall will fill with an enchantment unseen for two years when Ballet Wichita brings “The Nutcracker” back to the stage. After such a hiatus the production is bound to feel fresh – but not only will it feel fresh, it will be fresh, with upgraded costumes, esteemed guest artists and dramatic special effects – all re-envisioned by David Justin, the new resident artistic director. In the midst of transitioning out of pandemic mode, Justin brings a beloved holiday tradition back to life. He comes with his own storied resume, including a 17-year academic career, time spent with Kansas City Ballet as the interim ballet master and men’s program coordinator, and he was the founding artistic director of American Repertory Ensemble. He has also performed as a principal dancer with Birmingham Royal Ballet, was a soloist with San Francisco Ballet, and has traveled the world as a guest artist. Showered with international acclaim, his choreography has been described as “surprising,” “poetic,” “athletic,” “inventive” and “intelligent.” Invention, poetry and delight will be on full display Dec. 10–12, with the introduction of a flying balloon and a jack-in-the-box. The nutcracker doll will magically heal after being broken. “We’re also going big on snow,” Justin says. “Snow is really important.” Ballet Wichita has recreated some costumes and borrowed others “to expand the painting palette, if you will,” Justin says. “The Columbine and Harlequin costumes are completely new; Mother Ginger and the Polichinelles – they’re all brand new. I’m really excited about the way the entire production is beginning to thread itself together.” Guest artists Danielle Fu and Liang Fu from Kansas City Ballet will be dancing the roles of Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier, in addition to 80 local dancers.

“You have to be able to dream – but you also have to be able to execute your ballet technique.” – David Justin, Resident Artistic Director Justin is quick to praise the Wichita talent, many of whom are under the age of 12. “They’ve been really committed; I think very early on, they understood the level of professionalism and commitment that we’re going to bring to the process. You have to be able to dream – but you also have to be able to execute your ballet technique.” The dedication of the dancers and the innovation of the artistic director are even more extraordinary, considering the gradual transition out of pandemic conditions. Rehearsals were held in masks and costumes were designed with face coverings to protect cast and crew alike. But those precautions haven’t constrained the production in the least. In fact, like Clara, who is transported by her dreams, Justin is kept awake at night by visions of sugar plums. “Last weekend, we ran all of act one as it flows – and that night I couldn’t sleep. “They start understanding the beauty of them and the difficulty of producing them. Most of the prints are affordable – in a range of a few hundred dollars – and they’re really nice pieces of work.” The gallery’s portfolio of artists also includes well known names such as internationally acclaimed Birger Sandzén, the Swedish-born artist who immigrated to Lindsborg in 1894 to teach at Bethany College. He has oil paintings, watercolors and prints in major collections across the U.S. and in the National Museum of Stockholm.

Almost one year after taking over the Reuben Saunders Gallery, Mike Michaelis and Trish VanOsdel took a minute to reflect on their journey so far. “I feel like we have the right momentum,” said VanOsdel. “We’ve made a lot of changes that I feel are positive, from the responses we’ve had.”

Michaelis and VanOsdel love helping artists share their work and connecting Wichita patrons with a piece that speaks to them. “Having an original piece of work is really underestimated,” Michaelis said. “That feeling you get when you finally buy a piece or two and start enjoying it. This gallery has been fun! Trish and I have really enjoyed it.”

Michaelis commented that they’ve added 12 or 15 new artists in 2021: “We’ve kept the original artists but just expanded the style and the amount of work, which is one of the reasons we’re doing some remodeling – we need more space.” On Jan. 1 of this year, Michaelis and VanOsdel purchased the business in the Douglas Design District from founder Reuben Saunders. Michaelis is a well-known collector and vice chairman of Emprise Financial Corporation, while VanOsdel holds an MFA in sculpture. Art lovers across the state breathed a sigh of relief knowing that the premier Wichita gallery, widely respected for its collection of regional landscapes, still lives, prints and modern art, was in good hands. The gallery also offers art restoration and boasts an extensive framing studio where skilled staff preserve and present each work to its best advantage using archival techniques. The new artists flocking to Reuben Saunders’ representation over the past year have rounded out the gallery’s offerings, adding more glass art, jewelry, handcrafted furniture and consignment pieces. VanOsdel does all the appraising of fine art and antiques. “One of our goals was to end up with a breadth of styles, sizes and prices,” Michaelis said, “where somebody doesn’t feel like they’ve got to go to Kansas City or some larger town to find a piece of artwork that would fit in their home. We have enough choices right here.” Any art movement that swept across the Midwest in the past century is represented on the clean white walls of Reuben Saunders Gallery, going back to the 1930s. That’s when the Prairie Print Makers got their start, a group of central Kansas artists who grew in number and endured through The Great Depression and World War II. Michaelis, standing in front of a wall of intricate etchings and woodcuts of Kansas landscapes, said they tend to grow on people who may not be familiar with them. 80

Best Body Shop Winning Wichita One Client at a Time Back in the days when Clay Hoberecht had a small custom car and body shop called C. Hoberecht Customs in Wichita, an employee unknowingly helped him come up with a name that summed up the business in a word – and was easier for customers to pronounce. “My tech would come to me and ask me questions about a project he was working on, and I would say, ‘Well, what’s the best way?’ ” recalled Hoberecht (pronounced HO-bright). “The tech goes, ‘You always say that. You should call this place Best Body Shop.’ And I thought that was a great idea.” Hoberecht describes Best Body Shop as a low-volume, highquality collision repair facility with a focus on people versus profits. The shop’s active Facebook page, where they have a whopping 340,000-plus followers, says it well: “We are driven to succeed and to create a huge family of fans, customers and team members that only aim for excellence!!!” Doing things the right way means lots of return customers who know exactly who to call if they have a fender bender. His specialty is repairing cars based on the manufacturer’s

guidelines. “It’s an extensive amount of work – gaining access to those repair procedures, knowing how to read them, knowing how to apply them. Most shops don’t do that,” he said. “It’s quite frankly not done in Wichita.” Hoberecht has been in the body shop industry for 20 years, getting his start in the hot rod business as a technician at Devlin Rod and Customs. He ventured out on his own eight years ago with $1,000 in his pocket, renting a 2,700-squarefoot shop that had no paint booth, no running water and no bathroom. While he began the business focusing on custom work, the more he handled collision repairs the more he saw the need for a body shop that wasn’t pushed around by insurance companies’ demands. He decided to take on the role of consumer advocate. “Everyone said it would be impossible to win against the insurance companies, especially because so many body shops are in bed with them. But if you want me to get something going, just tell me it can’t be done. I said, ‘I’ll be your huckleberry,’ and I went after it,” said Hoberecht, who documented the entire process on his Facebook page. Today, Hoberecht, wife Barbara, and their 16-member team focus on modern collision repair and post-repair inspections in their 10,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art garage, featuring a Spanesi Michelangelo spray booth. Demand is such that Hoberecht hopes to open another location soon. “You see body shops doing massive volumes of cars at a massively discounted rate to meet goals and targets. My thought is, if you did half the work and did it properly, you’d be successful,” he said. “When you build that foundation, slow and steady, we get work from word of mouth and from performing good repairs. Ultimately what we are doing we believe is the best work. We also believe it’s the standard we’re setting for the entire city.”

EAGLE SCOUTS IN ACTION Eagle Scout Class of 1946

Scouting is an opportunity for fathers and sons to bond; it’s the equivalent of going out and playing ball every evening, Lewis said. With age comes perspective, and at 91 years old, Lewis Simmons of Augusta has a lot of it. Looking back on a life well lived, Lewis says three of the most important days in his life were the day he gave his life to Jesus, the day he married his wife, Joanne, and the day he achieved his Boy Scouts Eagle rank. “Being an Eagle Scout may mean more to the individual than to anyone else. As an Eagle, you know who you are,” said Simmons, who sat down recently to talk about the 75th anniversary of earning his Eagle Scout badge. Lewis was part of Severy, Kansas, Troop 274 in the Quivira Council, and became an Eagle Scout on Sept. 26, 1946. He and Joanne still live together in their home in Augusta, and Lewis is still a licensed Realtor. He’s also a keeper of mementos and memories. He has all 25 of the merit badges he received between 1945 and 1946 — records of his achievements in camping, wood-turning, pioneering, botany and hog production, among others. He also has his decorated Boy Scout sash, his original Scout handbook and his Eagle Scout pin. He occasionally tears up when talking about being an Eagle Scout. He counts it as the greatest honor bestowed upon him – greater even than honors he earned while working first as a teacher, then an insurance manager and then as a real estate agent. In October, Lewis joined other Wichita area professionals who achieved the Eagle Scout rank at a reception at Wichita Country Club. Lewis was hands down the Eagle Scout with the most seniority in the room. “I feel blessed to be part of that brotherhood,” he said. ”I have a deep respect for them because I know who they are. I know who they are because I know who I am.” Lewis says there is just something different about men who have achieved the Eagle Scout rank. Just as an eagle in nature hangs out on the tops of cliffs and soars to the highest heights, Eagle Scouts, too, tend to aim for the top. “Eagles are a rare bird,” he said. “You’ll find them in high places.” Lewis was born in 1930 at the start of the Great Depression. His family had little money – his father had a produce station and an ice house – and he learned to work hard early on. Scouting was a pleasure, however, and he enjoyed the camaraderie and the challenge. Much to Celebrate Behind These Doors! As they celebrate their 50th anniversary, Cheney Door Company owners Keith and Pat Bomholt credit their company’s success to their ongoing commitment to clients, persevering through the lean times and adapting to new products and service areas.

Recently, the company hosted a 50-year anniversary celebration at the Candle Club to honor both the staff and the company’s achievements. With over 70 employees, Cheney Door attributes much of its success to the longevity of its workers, including some who have been with the company for over 40 years. With its headquarters and a warehouse located in Wichita, plus offices and warehouses in Salina and Hutchinson, Cheney Door Company and its crew will remain dedicated to serving customers throughout the region, and is committed to installing the finest products and systems available in their industry.

Keith gained his knowledge and expertise working in the garage door industry during a time when he was also tending to the family’s Cheney farm operations. Initially operating the garage door business from within their own garage, Cheney Door Company officially opened its doors in 1971, and after 50 years has established itself as one of the largest door companies in the region. The times have certainly changed over the years with respect to products and pricing. Fifty years ago, before the days of cordless tools and pre-hung doors, both garage and home doors were primarily manufactured of wood, making them quite heavy and installation tedious – and, for many years, doors typically came in only one color.
