Should I File an Insurance Claim? Will It Cause My Insurance Premiums to Increase if I Do?

The large majority of homeowners’ insurance carriers subscribe to a Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange (CLUE report). This report looks at any claims you have filed over the past five years on your home, vehicles or other property. Any reported claim will be found on this report: water, windshield cracks, roof damage, etc., regardless of whether the insurance carrier paid for any damage, large or small. From my 34 years of experience — insurance carriers do not like small claims. They also see claims, no matter whether they are large or small, as a sign of increased risk, and will increase your premiums accordingly. Here’s my advice on various kinds of claims. Do not file a water claim, unless there is substantial damage and the cost of repair is high. Also, it is better to pay out of pocket for windshield chip repairs and mild fender-benders. Small repairs can cause your premiums to increase more than the out-of-pocket cost for the repair itself. For damage to your autos, always force the responsible party's insurance carrier to accept the claim — if not, you will be faced with paying the deductible upfront and may never see any restitution. The claim will show on your CLUE report and this should always be avoided. Lastly, if you do decide to file a home or auto claim, be prepared to see a rate increase, or even a possible cancellation of your insurance policy. What are Mortgage Points? Should I Buy Them?

You’ve probably heard about “points” along your mortgage journey. But what are they? They’re essentially prepaid interest purchased to lower your loan’s interest rate. One point equals 1 percent of your total loan amount. So, if your loan was $100,000, one point would equal $1,000. Determine your break-even period. Divide the cost of the points by how much you’ll save each month to get the number of months it will take to recoup your cost.
