Wichita’s Sweetest Couple ROB SNYDER AND SUSAN PETERS

Susan Peters is a sucker for a good story. As a television news anchor for 35 years — 20-plus of those in Wichita — Susan’s entire career has revolved around storytelling. And one of her favorite stories of all time is how she and husband Rob Snyder met and fell in love. The story starts with a guy from Queens, N.Y., and a girl from San Diego — two happy, careerminded 30-somethings who didn’t know if marriage was in the cards. And (spoiler alert) it ends with a wedding, two kids, lots of post10-o’clock-news-broadcast dates, and 30 years of love and companionship that are still going strong. “There are ups and downs; it’s not all fun and games, it’s not all euphoria. That’s not what love is,” Susan said. “Love is commitment to a family, to a life, and to another person, no matter what.” The couple says that to be in love, you have to work on being in love. And it helps when, like Rob and Susan, you find someone you just really like to be around. A CANDLE AND A PRAYER In the late 1980s, Susan Peters was an adorable, feisty, fun-loving newscaster for Channel 12 Wichita who had dated a lot, but hadn’t fallen in love. “My mother, who’s Catholic, and my Bible study teacher kept telling me to pray for a spouse,” Susan said. “I didn’t want to because I thought, if I ask God, I’ll get some holy-roller weirdo.” But finally, after a really bad dating experience (one for the books, she says), Susan decided to kiss dating goodbye. “As a last resort, I decided, ‘I’ll do what my mother and Bible study teacher say.’ I said, ‘I’m done dating, God, so forget it. I don’t know if a guy’s going to drop in my lap or what, but I’m done trying to find him.’ ” That was September 1989. 8

ACTS OF LOVE Rob Snyder and Susan Peters’ love story has grown to include the people in their community — especially those who are lonely and need a family’s love. Here are a few new projects in which the couple hopes the community will take part. • Susan’s passion project, Susan’s Kids, is rolling out Phase III, featuring more Kansas children looking for forever homes, and more heartwarming success stories. Check out susanskids.org for more information. • With the pandemic, the number of lonely seniors has skyrocketed, so Susan is working with local senior experts on an Adopt-a-Grandparent program. Look for it soon. • Together with local PBS affiliate, Channel 8 PBS Kansas, Susan will be encouraging families to cook together with a new show, “The Family Dinner Table,” featuring local family and chef recipes to make at home, set to debut in the next couple of months.

The ABCs of CBD (Cannabidiol)

ASK A MEDICAL DOCTOR Q: Suddenly, CBD seems to be everywhere. What exactly is CBD? Is this medical marijuana? CBD stands for cannabidiol. There are more than 113 naturally-occurring phytocannabinoids found in the hemp plant, and CBD is just one of them. I tell my patients if the CBD is pure and is extracted from the hemp (cannabis) plant, then it is legal everywhere in the United States. As of now, Kansas has not passed a law to legalize medicinal cannabis, so-called medical marijuana. Q: How does CBD help the body? Is there scientific proof? The human body has its own endocannabinoid system (ECS) and therefore has a natural need for cannabinoids. We actually produce our own cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids. The two most powerful ones are anandamide (Sanskrit for “bliss”) and FAAH. Without getting too deep into the neuroscientific mechanisms, just know that the brain is rich in a type of receptor for CBD, known as CB1 receptors, and the rest of the body — particularly the heart, lungs and the immune system — have CB2 receptors. Receptors are essentially docking sites in our cells that receive signals for biological functions. That

Lose Weight Without Surgery and Keep It Off REAL PATIENTS. REAL RESULTS.

REAL PLASTIC SURGEONS. REAL RESULTS. AMY SPROLE, MD, BRUCE FERRIS, MD AND NATALIYA BISKUP, MD Are you frustrated with diets that don’t work and failed weight loss attempts? Do you have 20 to 50 pounds to lose? Is your BMI between 30 and 40? Are you ready to learn to eat healthier? The Orbera Managed Weight Loss System may be for you. Orbera is a two-part weight loss program that helps people achieve their weight loss goals and maintain them long-term and without an invasive surgery. Orbera combines a weight-loss balloon with nutritional coaching and exercise programs. This proven program has helped thousands of people lose up to 3.1 times more weight than diet and exercise alone.

Our patient has changed her eating habits for good and is so happy with her sustained weight loss. Explain your journey to Orbera and body contouring. PSC Patient: When I went in for my neck lift, I saw the information about Orbera. It seemed so simple, and I was excited it was non-invasive. I had tried every diet and form of exercise I could, and still couldn’t lose the weight I wanted to. I inquired about Orbera and decided it was the treatment for me. How did you feel after treatment? PSC Patient: The treatment took about 20 minutes. It was pain-free, and I walked out on my own. The first couple of weeks were hard, but I had a lot of support from my Orbera team. I never felt alone.

The Orbera procedure takes about 20 minutes as we place a temporary balloon in the stomach. We do this without any incisions. The balloon stays in the stomach for six months to help encourage the body to adapt to healthier portion sizes. To help patients get the most out of this procedure, we provide a coaching team and connect patients with a dietician. This way, once the balloon comes out, patients may continue to lose weight and keep it off.

How much weight did you lose? PSC Patient: I lost about 30 pounds, and I am down two sizes. They give you a special scale, and you download an app on your phone. Plus, you get ongoing support from a person to help you learn how to eat differently.

In addition, many of our patients opt for body contouring options such as tummy tucks and arm and leg lifts to help reduce any loose, hanging skin. Patients can choose to add body contouring on the day the balloon comes out, or they can come back later for surgery.

Are you happy with your results? PSC Patient: Yes! I am thrilled — I look great at 63. I would do it over again. My self-confidence is amazing, and I look and feel so much better. I didn’t have any problems at all, and I am so glad I did it.

We are so excited to offer you the Orbera program that helps you control portion sizes and lose weight rapidly, without feeling hungry all the time. These healthy habits have helped many of our patients.

Do you have advice for people considering Orbera and body contouring? PSC Patient: Just do it. It has changed my life. You can do just the Orbera, or if you have excess skin, the body contouring really helps. Neither of the procedures were that bad. It just took a couple of weeks to get used to the balloon. I don’t crave bad food anymore, I eat more slowly, and I look forward to keeping the weight off with what I learned from my support team.

If you’re ready to kick start your weight loss with Orbera and explore body contouring options, your first step is scheduling a consultation with Plastic Surgery Center at 316.688.7500.

Turn Back the Clock WITH DR. BETHANY J. KING, KANSAS SURGICAL ARTS

Dr. King shares her philosophy and expertise: “I have found that the quickest way to bring back a more youthful look is rejuvenation of the upper face. It makes sense, given that people communicate with you directly by looking in your eyes. So the first determination of your age is generated by what people see around your eyes. The good thing is that this surgery is easily performed without general anesthesia and the recovery is one of least painful surgeries that I do. Come see me if you really want to turn back the clock.“ Since Covid, people are living in masks and even more attention is drawn to the eyes, and many more people have been interested in rejuvenating their eyes and surrounding areas. Here are the basic components of how upper facial surgery is addressed at Kansas Surgical Arts.

Forehead As you age, loss of elasticity causes skin to loosen and descend. As the central part moves down, you start to raise your eyebrows which leads to the wrinkles that cross your forehead. When the sides of your forehead and temple area start to descend, part of the eyebrow begins bending down and the downward shift causes the skin at the temple to accordion up. Dr. Bethany J. King has the ability to smooth your forehead skin without “raising” your eyebrows. She raises the lateral brow to

Upper Lid Blepharoplasty This technique removes excess skin of the upper eyelid. Dr. King assesses how much skin she can safely remove, removes it, and then draws the edges together. The scar is in the crease of the lid so that when you open your eye, it cannot be seen. This is not an eyelid lift which raises the eyelid to a higher

Commonly, but not always, all three of these procedures are performed at the same appointment. Each person is unique, and Dr. King designs the best approach for each individual. If you want the windows to your soul to be renovated, she is your face contractor. Call 316.573.4850 for a consultation.

position but simply a removal of excess skin.

Lower Lid Blepharoplasty The eyeball lives within the bone structure of the eye socket. However, the eyeball does not sit on the bone but on a soft mattress of fat. The weight of the eyeball on the fat pushes the fat forward in front of the eyeball. The fat is held inside by a sheet of tissue called the septum. In many people, the septum is fragile and cannot resist the outward push from the fat. As the years go on, the fat stretches the thin septum and pushes out further and further. Eventually, when the fat pushes out far enough it acts like a shelf and light cannot hit the skin on the underside, which is one reason you can get a ring shadow under the eye. If you find that you cannot cover up the dark under your eye with makeup, it could be because the dark is not caused by a pigment or color problem but rather a shadow problem. You have to make the skin flat so that light hits the skin uniformly and thus reduces the darkness.

improve your arch and smooth out the crows feet, helping to subtly return the area to a more refreshed appearance. This surgery is almost always paired with the upper lid blepharoplasty below to complete the rejuvenation of the upper part of the eye.

• Aim for a macronutrient balance of low carbs, protein (up to 0.8 gm per kgs of lean body weight), good fats and generous amounts of rainbow-colored vegetables. Intermittent fasting works for every adult, says Dr. Henry, however, children and pregnant women should not fast. If you have diabetes, IBS or chronic illnesses, fasting may help with your condition, but work with a doctor or registered dietician. “We have a fasting ‘club’ here in my practice; it is more fun and encouraging to do as a group!"

Valentine’s Song List Have you recently experienced a gut-punch of a breakup? We’ve all been there. To add salt to the wound...Valentine’s Day. To get you through this sweetheart’s holiday, we've provided a powerful and inexpensive remedy for your broken heart. A study from Freire University in Berlin* found what we already knew: Sad music can make a miserable person feel better. When a person feels down and listens to sad music, the music acts as a cognitive reward for your brain. The rewards come from identifying the song, empathizing with the singer, and escaping from real-life implications. In other words, your pain gets processed by

listening to an artist sing about their pain. When your pain is not your focus, but theirs is, your brain gets tricked into feeling safe enough to process and release your own painful emotions. If listening is not enough to relieve your broken heart, then take it to the next potent level. Another study* found that singing in private causes levels of the stress hormone cortisol to go down. Low cortisol causes feelings of relaxation. So go ahead and belt your favorite sad songs. You don't need to be a good singer or know all of the words to get these benefits. To the right is a list of break-up inspired songs from various artists, decades and genres. Sing them in your shower and car. Before you know it, you'll be ready to sing Louis Armstrongs’ “What a Wonderful World."
