Just Clip It I’m not trying to show my age here, but this is about the third time I’ve seen claw clips trending – or maybe they never went away? Hair clips have been reimagined this season with patterns and designs to match any outfit, dressed up or dressed down! Aspen Boutique has a wide variety of clips in-store, with added details like jewels, fabric –and even cat-shaped ones, which I bought! All of Aspen’s clips are best sellers already this season.

Leather gets reimagined this season by merging force with femininity. Think fierce moto chick meets feminine fashionista. The 2022 leather makeover consists of hardcore, oversized, and wornin leathers paired with flowy bottoms or ultra-feminine blouses. We especially love this look from The Violet Closet, which features leather trousers with a hot pink sweatshirt and pearl accented heels! The look is one part effortless, one part ultra-feminine, and just the right pinch of edgy to make this a perfect outfit option for fall 2022.

Not ready to plunge into a bright pink outfit for fall? The good news: Just because bright colors are sticking around doesn’t mean you’re out of trend if you’re loyal to neutrals! Neutrals and olive green are core classics, and that’s why we’ve featured the romantic puffsleeved midi dress available at Aspen Boutique. Now, suppose you’re open to playing around with a little bit of color. In that case, the outfit combo by The Violet Closet features a wine-colored pleated skirt, printed sweater, and purse, all with subtle pops of color.

Leather for Fall, Ground-Breaking

With the blazing temperatures we’ve had all summer, I’ll bet you’re ready for it to cool down. As you flip through this month’s fall fashion shoot, you’ll notice a brighter color palette, reminiscent of the usual summer hues throughout the pages. For fall 2022, get ready for temperatures to cool down and fashion to heat up.

I know it seems almost criminal to wear bright tones during this season, but fall’s usual suspects, the core neutrals, won’t be the only colors in the lineup. This season the colors are less restrained than last year, and illuminating hues like pinks, oranges, reds – and even yellow – are sticking around for a while longer.

Y2K fashion is back in a big way, bringing in micro mini skirts, lowrise jeans, jewels and glitter. If you’re like me, we are not returning to anything low-rise! Style Tip: A small way to indulge in this trend is to opt for a pair of mid-rise pants next time over a high-rise pair. The burgundy pants from LBD are an excellent example of mid-rise pants ready for fall. We paired the pants with a chunky knit sweater (with a collar!) which is very on trend now.

We focused on showcasing Pantone’s color picks for 2022: a mix of non-conforming colors to boost self-expression, inspire energetic qualities and celebrate life. This season encourages spontaneity; fall fashion is all about making room for experimenting and wearing whatever you want. Which I, for one, always subscribe to. Now that we discussed colors for the season, here are other trends and tips to get you fall-ready, and where to buy them locally.

“Scouting teaches them leadership skills that you just don’t get in your average classroom, and our troop’s emphasis on reverence placed Christ at the center of it all,” the elder Schwertfeger said. “There is nothing in these boys’ lives that gives them what Scouting gives them.”

Quivira Council and Morgan Stanley are proud to bring you Eagle Scouts in Action, a monthly showcase of community leaders who are banding together to make a difference in our community!

Luke, now a freight broker, said the lessons he learned were both practical and important. “Among many other things, becoming an Eagle Scout taught me practical things – like camping, welding, and project management. And Scouts also taught me abstract things – like being faithful to a long-term goal, how to leave places better than I found them, and how to be a good citizen to my country and my Levi, community.”assistantgeneral manager at Social Tap, said it wasn’t easy to achieve Eagle rank, but he’ll never regret doing so. “It was the source of my greatest personal, and physical experiences. Whether it was receiving my Eagle Scout award on top of a mountain after a hard hike (personal), or scuba diving in the Florida keys (physical), no experience will be forgotten. The things I learned during that journey were priceless and will last a lifetime.”

2011

The Wichita neurologist picked up those values and many more during his Scouting career in his hometown of Smith Center, Kansas, where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout at age 15.

When it came to his own sons joining Scouts, though, Schwertfeger said that, more than anything else, it was simply about spending time with his kids. “I was very busy and spent a lot of time at work, so I wanted to make my time with them count,” he said. “It was really a father-son experience.” His oldest son, Luke, earned his Eagle rank in 2011, while his younger son, Levi, achieved the honor in 2017.

Bottom Line Don’t get sucked into a sales pitch that all you need to do is buy this product or that product. Yes, you will utilize financial products to implement your retirement strategy and yes, some financial products are better than others – but having a comprehensive financial plan will help guide you to the right financial products for your particular circumstances and goals. Seek a financial advisor who can create a comprehensive plan, not just sell you a financial product. It is this plan that will help you successfully solve the retirement puzzle. Randy Yeisley is a local, independent investment advisor and is the founder and president of Yeisley Financial Group, Inc., located in northeast Wichita. Retirementthe Puzzle

Tax Planning

What if you or your spouse need long-term care due to an unexpected critical illness? Do you have a plan in place to take care of these additional costs? Our government says that 70 percent of people over the age of 65 will require some level of long-term care for an average duration of three years. How will you pay for it? Whether it is through long-term care insurance or through some other innovative solution, you must have a plan for dealing with these unexpected expenses or your financial plan is incomplete.

Solving

Social Security

Written by

We all feel like we pay too much in taxes, but if you look at historical marginal tax rates, you will quickly realize that we are currently at some of the lowest tax rates in history. We live in a political culture in which the government promises more and more benefits. These benefits have a price tag that can only be paid with more and more tax dollars. You need to have a tax-free source of income in retirement, so that changes in future tax policy will have minimal effect on your retirement income.

Reliable Income

Long-Term Care

We all want to know how much money we need to be able to retire. This question often comes from the misconception that we retire on our net worth. We actually don’t. We retire on the income that is generated from our net worth. Market volatility, inflation, interest rates and other factors can wreak havoc on our net worth. What you really need is a reliable, sustainable and inflation-adjusted income plan to ensure that you can retire with the lifestyle to which you’ve become accustomed.

Many people think the key to a successful financial plan is knowing how to invest their money. And, while it is true that we need to use sound investment principles, how we invest our money is really only part of a successful long-range financial plan. In an ever-evolving political environment, tax planning should most certainly be part of your overall retirement strategy. And what if you or your spouse face a long-term care event due to an unforeseen health crisis? When should you start drawing your social security benefit? How are you going to generate enough income to last as long as you do? These are all important issues that must be dealt with in order to truly have a successful retirement.

When is the right time to draw your social security benefit? Maybe you’re tempted to draw it early, because you are fearful that social security might not last. Maybe you plan to wait until age 70 to maximize your benefit. But how do you know what the optimal filing strategy is for your particular situation? A cookie-cutter answer doesn’t work well here. You need to balance maximizing your social security benefit with maximizing the value of your estate. Social security tends to be a significant part of most people’s retirement income, so proper timing can make or break a successful plan.

A. It is safe to say that the Wichita market is experiencing a shift and has been for some time, but it’s still going strong, and our city continues to grow at a steady pace. With that said, I wholeheartedly believe that understanding different personalities and connecting with people is one of my greatest strengths. My “secret sauce” is building organic relationships by being myself and allowing the business to follow. Building rapport and trust are key ingredients, and experience counts. My background in design and as an independent insurance agent in several states, and now here in Wichita, has provided expertise to buyers and sellers, input and confidence in their decisions, while navigating the real estate process from beginning to end.

A. An early career start in interior design actually led me to my career in real estate. While working on many multimilliondollar renovations in Miami, one client asked if I knew a good realtor to sell this spectacular property we had just completed. That’s when my real estate journey began. I got my real estate license literally within two weeks and was fortunate to team up with a luxury real estate agency right across the street. That spectacular home was my very first listing.

A. I have taken a few tricks from each trade and have applied it to the list of services I provide for my real estate clients. Not only do I offer my full attention around the clock with a go-getter attitude, I am also able to offer staging ideas, both in person and virtually, which is critical, particularly in selling one’s home in today’s market. I can also identify and negotiate items during the inspection period that may be covered by an insurance policy. I have managed to save quite a few deals, and this knowledge and skill also helps me maintain long-lasting relationships with my clients.

Q. What motivates you every day?

Q. How can you help clients with shifts happening in today’s insurance industry?

Q. What advantage can you provide clients in today’s shifting home-buying and selling market, as interest rates and home prices rise?

Q. How has your experience working in interior design and insurance complemented your real estate career?

A. Besides helping my clients in every way I know how, I absolutely love Wichita. This city offers me everything I need, and it is growing at a rapid speed. And that’s what I always wanted – to grow my business along with the city. It’s great to be a part of that growth and enthusiasm here in Wichita .

Q. Why did you choose a career in real estate?

A. Since the pandemic began, homeowners insurance premiums have increased due to labor shortages, natural disasters and actual increases in material costs. One thing I am noticing more now, which wasn’t seen much before, is how insurance providers are declining to offer a quote, because the cost of a rebuild will be more than the market value of properties. In other words, it will cost companies more to build than what they would get from the property if it were to sell. One major benefit of working with me is the ability to find the right fit for each client through multiple quotes with a multitude of carriers, ensuring my clients that they will get the best home insurance product for the lowest price.

Absolutely. Many patients find these treatments complement their thread lift nicely. In addition, lasers and PRP can be used in conjunction with PDO thread lifts. The combination of treatments targets sagging skin as well as deep lines. Ask us for more info!

In fact, this material has been used in orthopedic and cardiovascular surgeries for more than 30 Withyears.this treatment, you have little pain and little downtime. The best part is you see results almost immediately, and they continue to improve over time. Let’s look at some of our most frequently asked questions: What is a PDO Thread Lift? It’s a revolutionary aesthetic treatment that results in instant firming and tightening. The threads stimulate your own body to produce collagen in the area where they’re placed. This promotes smoother skin, reducing folds and lax skin. You’ll find you have better skin texture, fewer lines and wrinkles, and a more lifted, youthful appearance.

Some lifting and contouring effects are visible immediately. You’ll also notice your results improve over one to two months. Your age determines how quickly your body produces new collagen, which is responsible for plumping cheeks, smoothing wrinkles and filling lines. During this time try to avoid a diet high in sugar, alcohol or smoking.

It generally takes less than an hour. You can go right on back to work or your daily activities.

What Happens During Treatment? We numb your treatment site first, so you are comfortable. Once you’re numb, we insert the PDO threads through cannulas beneath the skin, place the anchor, and then pull the cannula out, leaving the PDO thread in place. The ends of the threads are tied and cut off, and they disappear under the skin, acting as anchors to create a firmer, more lifted appearance. You deserve expert guidance and exceptional results. Plastic surgery involves many choices. The most important is selecting a surgeon you can trust. Expect exceptional results when you have your plastic surgery performed by the highly skilled plastic surgeons at the Plastic Surgery Center.

Your threads should last about a year, but this is different for every patient. We follow up with patients around six weeks to determine if any touch-up is needed.

As we age, we lose collagen and elastin. These are the vital proteins that support our skin and keep it looking firm and youthful. When time marches on, it takes our bodies longer to produce collagen and elastin, and we end up with sagging skin and wrinkles. You might notice this around your nose, your smile lines, in sunken cheeks, and drooping skin around your chin and jawline. Many women and men who aren’t ready for a surgical facelift come to us looking for a way to regain their skin’s natural firmness and elasticity.

Yes! We customize each treatment to your goals, skin type and skin texture. Your results depend on how much lift and skin tightening you’re hoping to achieve.

Q. We’ve heard a new OB-GYN physician has joined the practice. Tell us about Pearl’s newest doctor!

Q. How have you balanced your personal daily life with professional responsibilities?

A. Yes! Dr. Charis Noteboom joined Pearl in July, and I couldn’t be more excited about it! As far as a color scheme or design change in the near future, that would be too expensive!

We strive to provide an experience our patients will be proud of, and although this may not be possible 100 percent of the time, reviews allow us real-time snapshots of opportunities to reinforce good practices, and also to determine when improvements are necessary.

Founder, Pearl OBGYN

Q. The pink office has been a big hit! Any chance there will be a color scheme change in the near future?

A. This is something I have certainly struggled with, but I’m learning that, in order to provide the sound and empathetic care that our patients deserve, I have to be clearheaded and mindful of the stress I bring home, because they’re not easily compartmentalized in our specialty. The running of our practice, delivering babies in the middle of the night, and my responsibilities as a father and husband are each important in their own way. All I can say is, I’m a work in progress.

Alex Melugin, Market President of Phoenix Home Care & Hospice

A. Success in a healthcare business is somewhat difficult to define, but it always comes back to patient care. Historically, this has been the only benchmark; however, in order to maintain a clinic setting in which to provide sound patient care, you must have a sustainable business model. Physicians in “employed” settings need not concern themselves with the expenses or cost of medical supplies, insurance, staff salaries and benefits, etc., Our entire team at Pearl has done a fantastic job of recognizing the importance of excellent patient care, but also being good stewards of the resources we have. It certainly has not been easy, but it’s extremely rewarding. I’m very thankful for the daily efforts of our team and the trust that our patients place in us. In our first 12 months of operations we had just over 8,000 patient encounters in clinic visits, surgeries and deliveries. This volume was certainly more than we anticipated, but it provided a catalyst to further refine each staff member’s role, and highlighted the importance of being flexible and efficient with our time.

Q. What do you credit your success to, being a startup in such a competitive market? Do you mind sharing how many patient encounters Pearl has had in the last 12 months?

Five days later, at the pleading of her husband, her parents, and her in-laws, Ashlee checked herself into Bel Aire Recovery Center.

“She really let me have it for an hour and a half,” Ashlee recalled.

The real turning point in rehab came when a counselor invited Maci-Lynn to share her feelings during a session with her mom.

29SEPTEMBER 2022 · splurgemag.com

“My husband, police officers, and EMS were all around me when I woke up,” she said. Despite the gravity of the situation, Ashlee refused to go to the hospital. “I refused to admit I was using again.”

Written by Amy Palser

After 33 days in treatment, Ashlee returned to her family with a new lease on life. For the first time ever this summer she watched Maci-Lynn compete in softball tournaments without the nagging pull of addiction. Ashlee continues to receive outpatient care at Center for Change in Wichita, which offers treatment for any opioid addiction. “Without them, I don’t know that my recovery would be as good as it has been,” she said.

How to Save a Life

Now six months drug-free, she also tells her story to new rehab patients at Bel Aire. “I tell them: If you have kids and you are in addiction, sit down with them, look them in the eye and ask them what they think about you. To have your child tell you they are afraid … It will change your way of thinking.”

Tragedy was the seed that took root in Ashlee Nelson’s heart – a seed that grew into a full-grown tree of depression, hurt and anger. The El Dorado woman tried to smother it with alcohol, pain killers, and eventually fentanyl. She would get clean for a while, but then the craggy tree would remind her it was there, and she would fall back into addiction.

But on February 11, 2022, everything changed. That was the day Ashlee, a stay-at-home mom of three, died in her kitchen after snorting half of a “dirty 30” fentanyl pill she had bought off the street. She was up to 13 pills a day, spending $500 to $1,200 a week, and her tolerance to the drug was high. Whether the pill she snorted that day was pure fentanyl or laced with meth or some other drug, she’ll never know. What she does know is that she collapsed immediately after taking it. Her 11-year-old daughter, Maci-Lynn, had been at a friend’s house, but came back home and found her mom lying unresponsive on the kitchen floor. She called 911 and a dispatcher walked the girl through CPR maneuvers until an ambulance arrived. EMTs gave Ashlee repeated doses of Narcan, a medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose, but they were Finally, unsuccessful.shocksfrom

Ashlee never realized before how much her addiction was hurting Maci-Lynn, sons Jordan, 9, and Conner, 7, and husband Brian.

a defibrillator brought Ashlee back to life.

“She said that she was afraid to be a kid. She would follow me around the house, and if I shut the door she wondered what I was doing. The first few weeks I was in rehab she couldn’t go in the kitchen because she would have flashbacks of seeing me there. She told me, ‘I’m mad at you but I love you.’ ”

While she had been in rehab before, this time was different.

“When I went to Bel Aire, I not only saw my counselor two to three times a week, but I saw a psychologist and I got diagnosed with bipolar disorder and got on meds,” she said. She also started taking Suboxone, which blocks the effects of opioids.

Ashlee has been able to talk about her journey in counseling and support groups, sharing the heartache that started it all: the late-term loss of twins in 2009. ”I just have more outlets that I wasn’t willing to talk to before,” she said. “I’ve gone into Wichita and hit meetings. I’m able to freely talk to my parents about the issues I’m having, as well as my husband.”

A grieving mom threads ribbon through a cradle during a Bridget’s Cradles support group

A. We host monthly in-person support groups for grieving moms, as well as quarterly craft nights. We also orchestrate special events for holidays such as Mother’s Day and Christmas. Finally, we host an annual candlelight vigil called Wave of Light on October 15, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. Bereaved families are encouraged to invite their friends and family members.

A. We desire to provide comfort, hope and healing to every family who experiences the heartbreaking loss of a baby. Unfortunately, one in four pregnancies ends in miscarriage or stillbirth. Although this is a tragically common experience, parents often feel alone in their grief. Bridget’s Cradles exists to comfort grieving families, provide them with support, and connect them to a loving community to walk their healing journey together.

Wave of Light: Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day

“Bereaved families do not have to grieve their babies without hope. Because of Jesus, we have the opportunity to spend eternity with them in heaven. Our role is to point grieving parents to the one who gives them that blessed hope!”

With Ashley Opliger Executive Director Bridget’s Cradles

Q. What is the mission of Bridget’s Cradles?

Q. How can we support Bridget’s Cradles?

Next month on October 15, bereaved parents and their friends and family are invited to attend Bridget’s Cradles’ annual community candlelight vigil, which will be held at Beech Lake. The event will feature a water lantern release and light display of 50,000 pink, blue, and white lights in remembrance of babies in heaven. For event details, including registration and fundraising information, go to bridgetscradles.com/waveoflight.WHERETOFINDTHEM P.O. Box 316 Kechi, KS info@bridgetscradles.com67067bridgetscradles.com

A. Bridget’s Cradles is 100 percent run on donations and volunteers. We are currently in need of the following types of volunteers: administrative, operations, sewing, knitting and crocheting. If interested, please email us at volunteer@bridgetscradles.com. You can also attend our monthly volunteer work nights at our headquarters in Kechi. For more information, visit bridgetscradles. com/volunteer. To support Bridget’s Cradles financially, you can donate online at bridgetscradles.com/donate or mail a check to our address below.

Q. What does your organization do?

A. Our primary ministry is donating small knit and crocheted cradles to hospitals across the country for grieving families to have a dignified and functional way to hold their babies born in the second trimester of pregnancy. We are currently donating our cradles to over 1,300 hospitals in all 50 states. We also host Christ-centered support groups in-person and online, produce a podcast called Cradled in Hope which releases hope-filled episodes twice a month, and organize various remembrance events to honor the lives of babies who have gone to heaven. To listen go to bridgetscradles.com/podcast.

– Executive director Ashley Opliger

Q. What programs are offered for local bereaved families?

Bridget’s Cradles is a faith-based, 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Kechi, just a few minutes north of Wichita. It was founded after the birth of Matt and Ashley Opliger’s daughter, Bridget Faith. She was stillborn at 24 weeks in October of 2014 at Wesley Medical Center. Due to complications in Ashley’s pregnancy and a poor prognosis given to them by doctors, Bridget’s grandma, Teresa Golik of Andover, knit a special cradle for her. When Bridget was born, Matt and Ashley and their families held her in the cradle, loving on her and making cherished memories with her. From their heartache, a ministry was born.

Some might think she’s crazy, but Abigail Turner loves helping people with their Medicare and retirement needs. She, along with her husband Jake (not from State Farm), own Medicare with Jake and Insured with Jake and have 14 agents they support. Her passions in the insurance industry revolve around two things: to educate and advocate. She loves educating clients on the Medicare program and all of their options, as well as life insurance and retirement planning. As an independent advisor representing multiple companies, she believes with proper education comes the ability for the client to make the best decision for them. Once a client has coverage, she is then an advocate for them, should any questions or needs arise. Rather than calling a 1.800 number for a billing question, they are contacting Abigail and her team to help clear up those questions. Abigail and Jake live in Wichita, along with their furbaby, Doris, a 10 year old beagle. It seems rare to meet an insurance agent who truly desires to work in the best interests of the client rather than the agency, but Viner fits that mold.

Of course, it makes sense that such a devoted insurance agent could only be a devoted father and husband. As the father to four children, he finds a great deal of joy in getting to be a part of every aspect of his children’s lives, and is involved in everything from recitals and events to sports practices and school. He wants them to know he is there for them in everything, and in turn, he hopes they grow up to care about the world the way he does.

the greatest personal benefit he has experienced from being an agent is learning to meet the needs of a variety of people. Anyone who employs Viner as their agent has automatic assurance of his care, as he explains, “They always have my personal cell, and can and will call me any time they have need, even weekends or holidays.” It is not often that you meet someone who is so assured of his calling in life. But when asked what his favorite part of this job is, Viner said he loves “creating a plan for my clients that helps them save money, but also gives them great coverage at the same time.”

Ross

Life andEconomyInsurance,ChangesSavingMoney

Viner has a final piece of advice for anyone uncertain about their current insurance options: “As the economy changes, insurance is likely to raise along with it, so having an independent agent is my recommendation, as they have options to give you the best savings through all types of coverage.” Furthermore, he advises all family unit types to invest in life insurance: “I’m a big, big, big, believer in life insurance. Nothing frustrates me more than seeing families who have large homes, nice cars, children, etc., and have zero life insurance coverage to protect their family.” As one who has been involved in this business for nearly 40 years, Viner has seen it all, and he is the perfect person to help you find the best coverage plan possible. Almost everyone who frequents the bar knew Barron, and there is a definite group of regulars, including groups of faithful sports fans who gather to watch their favorite Kansas teams on the bar’s large television screens. For first-timers, Sandra says most everyone is quickly reminded of the popular bar in the TV comedy series “Cheers,” due to its friendly, neighborhood bar where everyone knows each other and where patrons enjoy a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Upon taking over ownership, Sandra and Kazi made few changes to Barron’s Bar. “We made an agreement with Barron that we would not change anything, and we honored his wishes until after he passed, which was two years ago,” states Sandra. “Within the first year, we added some of our own touches. Then last year, our bartender, Ann Houk, came to us with a tremendous idea that expanded the photo wall Barron had created honoring past and present military, and this is special because our photo walls are something quite unique to our bar.”

Barron’s Legacy Lives on at Barron’s Bar

Where Everybody Knows Your Name will be available, along with daily homemade meal specials, plus nights will be filled with karaoke singing and live bands. Barron’s Bar is also a favorite among pool players, and several pool tables will be added to help accommodate the weeknight pool tournaments.

The backgrounds now at Barron’s Bar are an array of tribute walls that not only honor past and present military, but photo walls have also been created to honor first responders, including policemen and firemen. Sandra adds, “Honestly, it’s a bar for everyone, but we wanted to show our appreciation for the people who have done their service for the community.” Upon purchase of Barron’s, they also kept their promise to give back to the community by organizing and participating in local motorcycle poker runs to benefit nonprofits, and they also adopt a family for Christmas every year.

Sandra and Kazi were former customers of the bar, and were fortunate to have known Barron for over 20 years. As Barron’s health declined and after several heartfelt conversations about the future of his bar, both Sandra and Kazi knew it was their job to take over the bar for Barron, and became the new owners in October 2019. Already owners of another Wichita drinking establishment, they knew the bar business and jumped right in as operators.

The name of Barron Schmidt might be familiar to many Wichitans. Since 2004 Barron was owner, operator and namesake of one of Wichita’s popular bars. Today, the new bar owners, Sandra Scott and her husband, known as “Kazi” Williamson, are working hard to continue Barron’s legacy, and also to honor the bar’s many long-time patrons.

While I can’t tell you everything you need to know about the wines of Italy in this limited space, I can tell you the wines I have featured here are not only a great value – they are classic examples of some of the most popular growing regions and grape varieties.

ABV 12.5% “Wine Spectator” 91 May I suggest that you grab a bottle of each, invite some friends and explore Italian wines. Prepare some small plates of your choice to go with each, and let The Good Life begin, Italian style.

2018 Monte Antico Toscana Red Blend IGT, Tuscany, $14

Italy remains the largest exporter of wine in the world and, of course, is one of the top producers by volume. The warming climate has less effect on Italy due to the Alpine mountains in the north and the surrounding oceans to the east and west. These wines are from great large-scale producers with deep family roots and a glorious history. The wines are varietally correct, well made and highly rated by professional critics. More importantly, they are some of my favorite go-to bottles, perfect for late summer entertaining and the arrival of autumn.

A true Tuscan classic, consisting of 85 percent sangiovese, 5 percent merlot and 10 percent cabernet sauvignon fermented separately in stainless, then aged 12 months in 80 percent Slavonian barrels and 20 percent French barriques, followed by 12 months bottle aging. Deep ruby color with an elegant bouquet of leather, black cherries, licorice and plums; a medium to full-bodied palate, rich in ripe red fruit, followed by subtle notes of vanilla and violet that are well-integrated with the soft tannins and silky texture. Firm backbone, perfect integration of acidity and fruit and a well-rounded, gentle finish. ABV 13.5%, “Wine Enthusiast” 91 2019 Castello Banfi DOCG Chianti Classico, $16

ABV 13%, Luca Maroni 96, “Decanter” 90 2020 Pieropan Soave Classico, Veneto DOC, $21 This wine is 85 percent Garganega and 15 percent Trebbiano fermented in stainless, no oak or malolactic fermentation. It is a brilliant straw yellow color with greenish hints. The delicate nose is reminiscent of almond blossoms and marzipan. Good depth of fruit on the palate, with green apple, lime zest, citrus blossom and unripe pear, nicely balanced by a zingy acidity that enhances its long length.

Wines From Italy to Celebrate Autumn

This is predominantly sangiovese with small amounts of canaiolo nero and cabernet sauvignon. Fermentation takes place with traditional skin contact of eight to ten days. A short wood aging in large casks of French oak follows. Pure flavors of strawberry and cherry are the hallmarks of this expressive Chianti Classico, with earth, wild herb and tobacco accents adding depth as this firms up on the lingering finish.

ABV 12%, “Wine Enthusiast” 94

Italy has enjoyed significant growth in its wine industry since 2014. Volume produced has increased by around 34 percent in the past five years (from 4.2 billion liters to 5.6 billion liters). The pandemic was a disaster for Italy, especially the northern half, but the wine industry is rebounding nicely.

Q. Big jackpot winners are getting lots of mentions on social media. Why are there so many winners at 7 Clans First Council Casino and Resort?

At 7 Clans First Council Casino and Resort, we have an array of spectacular shows coming up that appeal to all fans of music. Our venue offers music enthusiasts a great way to be incredibly close to world-renowned musicians. Concertgoers can see bands and entertainers in a room of less than 1,000 people. Some of our upcoming acts include Cedric the Entertainer, Justin Moore, Giovanni and the Hired Guns and REO Speedwagon. We can’t wait to announce our fall entertainment schedule, which has some of the hottest and newest Texas country bands on the charts. Stay tuned, and visit 7clans.com for all the latest announcements and updated event schedules.

A. At 7 Clans First Council Casino, we have such a large variety of enjoyable games. There is something for everyone on our casino floor. We have more than 1,500 machines between First Council Casino and the Chilocco Gasino right across the street, and players do not have to bet big to win big. In July alone at First Council, we paid out a little more than $4.9 million in hand-pay jackpots. In August, one of our patrons was playing a two-cent denomination on a progressive machine. They made a $1 dollar bet and hit a jackpot of $201,910.86. That’s a life-changing spin! There are opportunities like that all over the casino floor. And that is proof you don’t have to bet big to win big.

A. Our promotions are geared toward the players. Most casinos have prize promotions, but we feel like the best way to reward the players is with cash. For the last several months, we’ve had a progressive cash giveaway at the end of the month where one of our players has walked away with a huge cash prize. At the end of our July progressive giveaway, one winner took home $29,500 for our final drawing. A new car or a trip might not line up with everyone’s favorite prize, but you can’t go wrong winning cash in our giveaways. We are committed to rewarding our players for their loyalty. You can play all day and relax the night away at our hotel that has 146 rooms and suites, plus a new indoor waterpark. You can grab a bite to eat at our snack bars, purchase a drink at one of our fullservice bars, or enjoy a favorite dish at our Flatwater Bar & Grill. And don’t forget to check out the Council Bluffs Event Center to see what big-name acts are coming up next!

“The whole idea is for folks to have fun.”

Brian Nastase, Quivira Council CEO, said all are welcome to the fundraising event. “Scouting will come alive with the Eagles Honor Bash as we help raise awareness and funds to support the growth of Scouting values, quality leadership skills and a moral ground – foundations that youth so desperately need today. Your participation will give youth hope! See you there.”

Saturday, October 22

Growing up in a poor family in Chicago, the seventh of eight children, Breathett was introduced to Cub Scouts, but quickly learned it wasn’t a reality for his family. “They had to decide whether to put food on the table or for Sherdeill to go Scouting,” he said. “But the way I look at it, I could have been an Eagle Scout if I had had someone to support me back then. That’s my attitude and my passion behind it.”

Eagles Honor Bash

Breathett is a newcomer to the Quivira Council, but Wichitans may recognize him from his roles in everything from the Sedgwick County economic development office, to radio DJ, to motivational speaker and pastor. His hope is that the Eagles Honors Bash will become Quivira Council’s biggest fundraiser – even exceeding the revenue brought in by popcorn sales.

“Local Scouting has been integral to our family life for a very long time, and it has helped to instill positive values in area youth for over 100 years,” said Attwater, who is also a Quivira Council board member.

Creating Leaders, One Merit Badge at a Time Quivira Council Hosting Inaugural Eagles Honor Bash

Tickets are available now for the Oct. 22 event in east Wichita. Organizers say it promises to be a fun evening of eating, dancing and socializing – a classy, cocktail-attire event with the subtle aura of a campout. “When you come into the venue, you’re going to see Scouts, you’re going to see tents,” said Sherdeill Breathett Sr., Quivira Council development director.

Breathett likes that the scope has expanded so that any child can take advantage of the leadership and rigors of Scouting.

72 SEPTEMBER 2022 · splurgemag.com

“We need money for what we do – to reach these kids and to help these kids,” he said. Current initiatives include reaching underserved, black and Hispanic communities in Quivira Council’s 30-county area. His passion for underserved populations comes from personal experience.

Paul Attwater has a philosophy: If every day more young people said and practiced the Scout Oath and Law, the world would be a better place. For Attwater, it’s not just a good thought –it’s a life goal. He and his four sons are all Eagle Scouts, and he wants to see as many Wichita kids as possible join the Boy Scouts of America and eventually earn the rank of Eagle. So he is happy to serve as host alongside wife Kim for the first-ever Eagles Honor Bash, a fundraiser for the BSA’s Quivira Council.

Written by Amy Palser

“When you look at what the Scout Oath and the Scout Law are all about, if you can embrace and practice those principles, it’s a game changer,” Breathett said. “We produce leaders.”

Paul Attwater and Kim Dugger Attwater Sherdeill Breathett Sr.

Inclusion has become a big theme for Scouts, he said, including the addition of girls to the program. It’s now a club that anyone can join and boasts a family setting where everyone can take part.

A. As a child I had a lot of energy; I was always excited to learn new things and engage in social activities. I remember in my adolescent years wanting to be a physician, and later that morphed into pursuing a career in the military. (None of which came to fruition, likely for the best.)

A. First and foremost, I feel blessed to have had many great experiences in my 35 years on this planet. But by far, the best experience has been being a father and having a strong family unit. Outside of that, serving as a director and commercial agent at J.P. Weigand & Sons continues to be my daily passion. While my roots are in Wichita, I grew up in Lake Forest, Illinois (a suburb about 30 miles north of Chicago). Prior to moving to Wichita I lived in New York City, Denver and Chicago. I’ve now been living in Wichita for five years, and thoroughly enjoy every minute of it.

Q. What is your dream career collaboration?

Q. Do you have a talent that you consider A.useless?

A. Good question. I feel like I’m honored to collaborate with some of the most brilliant real estate minds in my office on a daily basis. I cannot express the value of having people like my father, Grant and Bradley Tidemann, George Laham, Christi Royse, Herb Krumsick, and many others with an open door, to help connect dots, solve problems and bestow wisdom, while always emphasizing hard work, honesty and integrity of the deal.

Q. What were you like as a kid, and what did you want to be when you grew up?

A. Well, working in real estate you certainly run into some unusual deals and unusual personalities, but that’s what makes the business so amazing: Every day is an opportunity to gain wisdom and grow your skill set.

A. The best “teachers” and “mentors” in life have always been my parents. As cliché as it sounds, there is no manual on how to raise a child; we simply do the best with the abilities God gave us. My parents have always exhibited unconditional love, consistency, and confidence that makes me continue to grow into the best version of myself.

Q. What’s your favorite wardrobe piece?

A. The Nice Little House Salad at Redrock Canyon Grill, the chicken tacos at Sabor, and the oysters at Newport Grill.

A. First off, I would say our people set us apart. We try to hire good, honest, down-to-earth people who share our core values. They deliver the exceptional customer service that our customers are looking for. Second, we provide all three trades under one roof. This convenience allows for our customers to deal with a single contractor for their projects. This approach helps keep costs down and communication among the trades very clear. Lastly, we still provide a quality, small-town way of doing business. Since bad news travels fast in small towns, we have to make sure our customers are 100 percent satisfied.

A. I was born and raised in Kingman, so this was our first location. We grew about as large as we could in a town of 3,500, so I ventured to Pratt to find more work. After making many trips between Kingman and Pratt, we decided it would make sense to open a shop or store front in Pratt. Later we bought Adams Electric and Borderline Electric to gain more market share there. About three years ago we opened a location in Wichita, which allows us to employ many more people. More recently we expanded into Hutchinson and Medicine Lodge, and have store fronts in both those towns as well.

Meridian Wichita,

A. We provide electrical, plumbing, heating, and cooling services. Whether it’s in your home, business, commercial building or industrial plant, pipeline or oil well, we cover it all.

A. Since I spend a lot of time at work, my idea of relaxation is just spending time at home with my wife, Melissa, and two children, Siana and Tatum. We live out in the country, and our kids have two horses, two dogs and a cat. They enjoy swimming in the ponds, catching critters in the creek and riding their UTVs around. Just hanging out at home feels like a great weekend for me.

A. When I was in seventh grade, an electrician, Duane Hanna, came over to do some electrical work at our house. I happened to be home that day and helped him. After the job was completed, he asked if I wanted to go on another service call with him. I asked my parents and they agreed. Together, Duane and I repaired a washing machine. The next day he picked me up after school to help with more service calls. I quickly learned I made a lot more money working during the summer and after school than playing sports, and continued to work for Duane throughout high school.

Q. What are some services you provide?

Q. How are your staff trained in their areas of expertise?

With Travis Eck Owner Eck Services

With graduation fast approaching, college seemed costly and was not a fit for me. At the time, there was a big push for high school graduates to go to college. Trade schools were frowned upon. After working about a year out of high school I decided that electrical work was my calling. With my many hours of earned experience, I was already eligible to take my master’s test. I first became a master electrician, then a master HVAC mechanic, and finally, a master plumber. Shortly thereafter I went out on my own, since Duane was ready for retirement.

Q. How does family life allow you to recharge?

Q. How did your locations evolve?

Q. How did you get started in this field of work?

A. The most valuable resource we have is our people. Most of our team come from trade schools, and we offer a lot of on-the-job training. Additionally, we send about 10 to 20 percent of our team to schools in Arkansas and Texas for a week each year, for focused refresher training. All of our license holders are required to complete at least eight hours of continuing education training.
