Our son Chad was 8 years old when he was hit in the nose with a baseball. He asked, “Dad, if I had been born a minute later, would the ball have missed me?” Dad answered, “No, it would have hit your ear!”

When my Great Uncle Fred’s teenagers tried to sneak in late at night, their mother wailed, “Where have you been?! Fred’s been worried sick!” Meanwhile Fred snored away on the couch. Now we say, “Fred’s been worried sick!” to mean no one is worried at all!

My husband went through a phase where each person at dinner had to come up with an original joke before they could leave the table. We got some doozies! I think he was training our kids in the art of dad jokes!

Our beloved, cornball dad invented crazy names for people. My friend P.R. was “Pot Roast.” Dad’s employee Penny Heater was “Nickel Furnace.” And one joke we still roll our eyes at today: “What did Delaware? And did Tennessee her?” Pop Fergy – you always kept us smiling!

The Bow Tie-Wearing ‘TikTok Doc’ Brings Parenting Wisdom to the Masses Written by Amy Palser

“Hello, I’m Dr. Larry Mitnaul, your friendly neighborhood child and adolescent psychiatrist.” You might have heard those words if you’ve ever caught one of the YouTube videos where Wichita psychiatrist Dr. Larry Mitnaul addresses common childhood dilemmas like tantrums, stuttering, sleep habits and ADHD. Or perhaps you’ve seen one of his viral Instagram reels where he comedically deals with screen time, chores, “the talk” and other child and teen issues. But his social media presence is just a small part of who the “TikTok Doc” is: Mitnaul’s smart advice for parents is backed by years of working with children and parents in his clinic, as well as 13 years of on-the-job training as a father of five. He and wife Katie have four boys, ages 13, 11, 9 and 7, plus a 4-year-old girl. What’s his favorite part of fatherhood? “I love the comedy,” he said. “Whether it’s me doing something dumb and laughing about it – or more often my kids saying something completely hilarious. And I love watching my kids take on a challenge. We have some musicians who are learning some new things, and some kiddos who are playing sports, too. It’s really wonderful to watch them, whether they are successful or not – I can’t get enough of it. I would do that over anything else.” 8

The family moved to Wichita in 2017 when Mitnaul joined Ascension Medical Group Via Christi – and they’ve brought their extended family along for the ride. Two of Mitnaul’s three younger siblings and their families have since moved to Wichita, as have his parents. “I’m really glad they decided to follow us here, because if your kids can grow up within a village, that certainly helps out the parental role of trying to be everything for your child,” Mitnaul said. “Our kids thrive on being affirmed and noticed and praised for their uniqueness, and with more eyes trained on them, they flourish.” Despite a busy schedule, family time is a priority for the good doctor, and it’s common to find the Mitnaul crew together playing board games and sports – tennis is a favorite – and spending time outdoors. A healthy work-life balance was a principle Mitnaul saw modeled by a superior while he was in his residency. “At the end of the day I’m

presenting to my preceptor, Dr. Matthews, in his office and he’s sitting in taekwondo gear. And he says, ‘We do family taekwondo on Wednesday nights.’ It was great to see someone prioritizing family life and also doing some amazing work.”

It seems to be working. So far his most viewed reel is on the subject of whether to give teens smartphones. (With a 13-year-old son, it’s a question Mitnaul gets asked a lot in real life – and no, his son doesn’t have one.) “It’s been neat to see what parents resonate with,” he said. One of his most important messages for parents is that, whether they believe it or not, they can be their kids’ number one influencer. That’s something Mitnaul is witnessing firsthand as his children grow. “Every once in a while I can catch some way that I’ve influenced them that I didn’t even know. My eldest son and I were working in the garage and I said, ‘Son, put on your mix.’ His mix had Motown hits and it was so exciting! I thought, ‘You’ve been listening to what I’ve been listening to and it’s become a part of you, too.”

Dr. Mitnaul’s Tips for Dads Dr. Larry Mitnaul lives, works and breathes parenting – from raising five kids together with wife Katie, to shepherding young patients as a child and adolescent psychiatrist, to doling out parenting advice on his social media channels and online courses. So what are some keys to being a good dad? Dr. Mitnaul shares:

New Media When Mitnaul was deciding what direction to take his pre-med biology degree, a talk he heard about the intersection of science and public health caught his attention. His interest piqued over questions like, “Who has done the most for science: the person who invented a specific surgery or the person who told people they should wash their hands?” With each step of his education, Mitnaul began to hone in on his passions: public advocacy, medicine, mental health, children and adolescents. The final pieces of the puzzle came during residency at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire where he landed in a child psychiatry clinic and discovered it was “the greatest experience in all of medical school.” Meanwhile, ideas were running through his mind about how to reach people in a way that could change entire communities. “Residency was the first time I thought, OK, television and new media is the place. That’s the place where you reach kids, that’s the place where you reach families,” he said. “By using the tools of new media you can reach people you otherwise wouldn’t.” With some encouragement from colleagues, Mitnaul started using social media to provide a library of helpful videos for parents, as well as videos aimed to reduce the anxiety of incoming patients. Some of Mitnaul’s most popular YouTube videos are about ADHD and the brain, tips to help anxious kids, and mental health and athletes.

Dads, your presence matters. No matter what message you’ve heard or what your experience has been, you’re needed for so many reasons. Your affirmation makes a big difference in the life of your kids. A father’s presence improves kids’ chances of completing high school, performing well academically and staying out of the detention center. Being present, aware and intentional can be very life giving. I don’t want dads to take that for granted. Be intentional about finding ways to be in the life of your child. Their sports, activities and music might not be your favorite, but your attention to those things is transformational. You don’t have to agree with everything they agree with or jump fully into it, but showing interest and having some knowledge of their passions is so important. Encourage the virtues you see your child exhibiting. For instance, “I know you didn’t make the baseball team, but it’s the hard work you put in that I’m really proud of.” Dads have a way to champion that message. Even if we dads aren’t the most emotional ones, we can encourage those virtues. Be present. We’re always trying to disentangle kids from their devices, but it’s a struggle for us dads, too. It might be turning off the game and saying, “So tell me about that friendship,” or just being a listening ear. Dads have lots of things to get done, but if there’s a way to make the child a part of it, you’ve created an opportunity to hang out together. The other day I needed to take some tree limbs to the curb and as I was working I thought, I don’t think I’ve heard my youngest read today. So I’m cutting and she’s reading the book to me. If we can look for windows to involve our children, that matters.

In 2021 he branched into Instagram reels with 7- or 8-second sketches aimed toward parents. Set to music or prerecorded audio, they provide comedy relief, but also offer solid advice in the captions. The reels have tapped into Mitnaul’s thespian side. “There is a little anxiety and trepidation in the space to feel like, can I pull this off? Can I do something that does two things at the same time – something silly and approachable that catches someone’s eye, but also has substance and can actually teach someone something important?” JUNE 2022 · splurgemag.com

A Father for All Seasons On Path to Sainthood, the Late Fr. Kapaun Touches Lives Along the Way Written by John Huthmacher

The same spirit that compelled Father Emil Kapaun to become a priest ultimately drove him to battlefields and prison camps as a U.S. chaplain during World War II and the Korean War, to rescue U.S. soldiers through countless acts of heroic bravery. His innate ability to lead by example, oftentimes risking his own life in the process, continues to drive his cause for sainthood today, capturing both headlines in the media and the hearts of those whose lives have been impacted by his lifesaving interventions. A posthumous Medal of Honor recipient, he is credited with saving the lives of countless prisoners held captive during the Korean War. Recognized by the Roman Catholic Church as a Servant of God in 1993, his cause for sainthood continues to gain momentum as he approaches step two, Venerable, in the four-step declaration process. Seventy years after his death in a prison camp, it was announced in March 2021 that Kapaun’s remains were identified, and on Sept. 29, 2021, were entombed inside the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Wichita within the Diocese where he was ordained. On campus at Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School in Wichita, Kapaun is celebrated year-round by faculty and students through such activities as homecoming, parades, Masses and school essay assignments. Rob Knapp, president of Kapaun Mt. Carmel, said he believes the revered priest’s life story exemplifies what a Christian lifestyle should look like. Accounts of Kapaun’s daily walk have inspired many who desire a closer relationship to Christ. That his journey to sainthood keeps his name and example in the limelight is perhaps its greatest blessing to believers everywhere. “Father Kapaun’s life, particularly at the end when he was dealing with being captured and in captivity with the other American soldiers in the Chinese prison camp, really exemplifies the virtues that we are called to live out on a daily basis,” Knapp said. “The reason I believe Father Kapaun is where he is, is because he is a man of heroic virtue. When we look at the cause for canonization, we’re looking at those people we believe to be in heaven and looking at their lives as being the type of lives that we as fully alive humans on this earth need to exemplify, follow and imitate. “What we’re trying to do with this cause for canonization is look at those virtues he lived out on a daily basis, virtues we want to follow and imitate. His cause is not necessarily a linchpin that propels our school into some new area or something that makes us any greater. It helps us spread the story across the world of this man, who we certainly celebrate in a spirit that allows us to share his virtue with the rest of the world.”

An Ordinary Boy The eldest of two sons, Kapaun lived a rather ordinary childhood growing up in Pilsen, Kansas, about 60 miles north of Wichita. The son of Enos and Elizabeth Kapaun divided his daily 14

A Beacon of Hope It was during the Korean War battle of Unsan on Nov. 1–2, 1950, that Kapaun’s role in the war effort escalated to new heights. Told to flee to safety by his allies, he chose instead to stay the course, rescuing as many as 40 wounded men from the battlefield. Captured in the effort, he would spend the next seven months as a prisoner of war, eventually succumbing to illness on May 23, 1951, in a communist POW camp. He was 35. His ongoing efforts on behalf of U.S. troops lifted spirits and saved lives. In an atmosphere wrought with hopelessness, his human touch sustained many who likely would have perished otherwise. Father Kapaun enjoyed playing sports with the kids at recess, even buying them baseball and soccer equipment. This photo was taken in Pilsen between 1940-1943.

routine between playing baseball, riding his bike, and doing chores on the family farm. Yet it was during these formative years that he found himself drawn to a saintly life of service to others. And that is perhaps what has made him such an inspirational figure to everyday people also striving to lead exemplary lives. Scott Carter, coordinator for Kapaun’s cause for sainthood at the Catholic Diocese of Wichita for the past seven years, said he thinks it is the simplicity of Kapaun’s humble beginnings that have made him seem particularly accessible to believers with seemingly less than exemplary spiritual resumes. “He was just an ordinary boy,” Carter said. “In most ways, he wasn’t that spectacular. His ordinariness is inspirational: If God’s grace can use him, it can use us too. He lived his faith and was always looking to help other people. He wanted to bring others to God.”

‘Father Kapaun’s life, particularly at the end when he was dealing with being captured and in captivity with the other American soldiers in the Chinese prison camp, really exemplifies the virtues that we are called to live out on a daily basis.’ – Rob Knapp Upon completing seminary, Kapaun was ordained on June 9, 1940, and returned to his home parish of St. John Nepomucene to begin his priesthood. His desire to help restore hope to those struggling through difficult times led him to enter the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps in 1944. Offering Masses on the hood of his Army jeep as circumstances dictated, his ability to connect with the downtrodden made him hugely popular among the troops, whether Catholic or not. “Even though the communists didn’t allow them to have prayer services, he would sneak around and pray with the men,” Carter said. “He would do whatever he could to keep them going.” His fearless actions under fire endeared him to those who needed his intervention to brave the less-than-humane conditions facing them daily on the battlefield or prison camp. “Father Kapaun’s self-sacrifice for his brothers, going from foxhole to foxhole and running towards bullets to take care of them, is something that really resonates with people who hear his story,” Carter said. “I can’t help but think this man is in heaven, and it will be a joy in seeing that declared. From the beginning of the fighting, he earned the reputation for sticking his neck out to visit the men on the front lines, oftentimes barely escaping by the skin of his teeth.

“Conditions were pretty bleak,” Carter said. “A lot of men died that first winter. He (Kapaun) would steal food for them, share his own food, and wash their clothing when they had dysentery and couldn’t control their bowels. He would pick lice off them. “When the communists held indoctrination sessions, they told the prisoners their God and country had forgotten them. He reminded them in his teachings and actions that God was right there with them.” Though his cause continues to march forward, Kapaun’s road to sainthood is hardly secured. The pilgrimage starts with 6 a.m. Mass at Church of the Resurrection in Bel Aire and ends on the fourth day with the Father Kapaun Day Mass, 11 a.m. at St. John Nepomucene, Kapaun’s home parish. Participants cover 22 miles the first day, 14 miles the second, 16 miles the third day and eight miles the final day. Every two to three miles, the group pauses for Father Kapaun Stations, reflecting on different aspects of Kapaun’s life. Some portions of the walk are dedicated to group rosaries while others are silent times – and there is lots of time to walk and talk and meet new people. Camping in tents at night, the group has more time to fellowship and learn about Father Kapaun. Support vehicles at the front and the back of the group carry participants’ tents, sleeping bags and belongings, and provide meals for them along the way. The walk is organized by Father Eric Weldon, the Brunke family and several volunteers. Wanting to raise awareness of Kapaun’s beatification, Weldon set off in 2009 on foot from Wichita to Pilsen with three others. By the time he arrived in Pilsen he had picked up 10 more pilgrims. When he did it again in 2010, he started with 37 participants and ended in Pilsen with 74. Today registration opens three months before the departure date and the 375 open spots are quickly filled. “Pilgrimage is an ancient tradition in the church, and it’s great that it’s alive in Kansas today,” said Scott Carter, coordinator for Kapaun’s cause for sainthood at the Catholic Diocese of Wichita. “The journey is a challenging but also joyful way to get to know Father Kapaun better. It’s also a great opportunity to slow down and get to know the people around you, something that I think Father Kapaun would encourage us to do more of.”

of investigation by committees to ensure each candidate’s reputation remains untarnished under scrutiny. Additionally, at least two miracles attributed to the candidate’s intercession must be verified and approved before the canonization can be finalized. And while Carter is hopeful Kapaun’s recognition comes sooner than later, he draws inspiration from the good that continues to emerge from the process itself. “Our primary goal in a lot of ways right now is to continue to share his story and encourage prayer that continues to bear fruit, even outside the ultimate declaration by the church,” Carter said. “I take a lot of consolation in the fact that everybody I talk to and share his story with says he’s a saint already. The good he has brought about is immense. “One of my favorite parts of the job is to hear and see how the Holy Spirit has used his life to inspire others to make their lives better. I am constantly surprised at the amount of good he has brought about. That doesn’t stop us from being impatient for it (canonization) at times, but we’re not stopping or giving up by any means.” 16

Researcher Says Studies Will Aid in Disease Prevention Written by Amy Palser

Medical research has made great strides in recent years in treatment methods for heart patients, but the goal of preventing heart disease altogether – and thereby eliminating the need for treatment – is a continuing fight for researchers like Dr. Ghiyath Tabbal. The Wichita cardiologist is heading up three heart disease prevention studies at the Alliance of Multispecialty Research. “We still have a long way to go in preventing the disease before it happens and modifying risk factors so patients won’t need treatment,” said Tabbal, who practices at Heartland Cardiology and is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology. “The goal is preventative treatment as well as increasing the longevity of a heart patient’s life – but also focusing on the quality of life of the patient and their overall health.”

Atrial Fibrillation One study currently underway seeks to improve the software in everyday technology like smartphones and smart watches so it more accurately detects arrhythmias in heart patients. Participants will be provided with a coding device as well as a wireless ECG patch. Data from the smart device will be compared to that of the ECG patch, determining the accuracy of the smart device. Tabbal said there is no risk to participants and no procedures involved. “Their data is well protected, and they will get the benefit of continuous monitoring without any financial burden.” Participants also will learn the results of their own data collected during the study period. “That’s our duty toward them – as a physician and as a researcher, any information that comes to light or a new diagnosis that arises, we will notify the patient and guide them toward the next step,” Tabbal said. Anyone with a history of irregular heartbeat, from mild to serious, is encouraged to apply for the study. They just have to be age 22 or older. “We have done well with the recruitment period so far, but would like more patients from Wichita to participate in the study because the results have been very promising,” he said.

Heart Failure The other two studies involve experimental drugs used to treat heart failure. Tabbal explained the condition as the heart muscle becoming weaker and failing to pump fluid through the body as it should. “Fluid builds up in the body and you have swelling of the feet, shortness of breath, your quality of life goes down and daily chores and activities are affected by that,” he said. 18

Each of the two studies tests a different drug, and researchers are looking for participants who have a weakened heart muscle. Both studies are in Phase 3, which means the drugs have been tested with good outcomes on a smaller group of people, and are now being tested on a larger group to provide more data. “The effectiveness and safety have been met,” Tabbal said, “so we move to a larger group of people with similar symptoms so we can show on a larger scale that the medications work.” In one of the studies, participants will receive the experimental drug in three phases, with each phase lasting 15 days. Some participants will receive a placebo. The total study is 12 weeks long, and patients will be re-evaluated after taking the drug. “In the phase 2 trial, the results came back very promising in improving quality of life for patients,” Tabbal said. The other study tests an experimental drug that may reduce heart failure deaths. The 25-month study is looking for participants who are at high risk for heart failure, including patients who may require IV treatments and have frequent hospital visits. Participants’ heart function will be evaluated with an echocardiogram and they will have regular followup appointments while taking the once-a-day medication, said Tabbal. “Our goal is to help them live longer with this medication.” For information or to participate in any of the three heartrelated studies, call AMR Wichita East at 316.689.6609, or visit heartlandresearch.com.

Should You Invest In Gold? This is a topic where it is difficult to find middle ground among experts. It seems as if you have those who are hardcore about moving everything to gold or you have those who tell you that gold is a poor investment compared to the long-term growth of the stock market. Let’s try to remove the emotion from this decision and look at the facts.

When Gold Prospers Gold is generally associated with value – whether it is a gold medal, a gold watch or the golden buzzer on the “America’s Got Talent” TV series. From an investment standpoint, the price of gold tends to go up in times of trouble, times of uncertainty and times of extraordinary inflation. The price of gold tends to go down in times of prosperity. In other words, if the news is bad, gold goes up. If the news is good, gold goes down.

When It Doesn’t The problem with gold is that it doesn’t produce anything. Whereas, a company does produce something and can increase the value of the company’s stock. Gold pays no dividends. It doesn’t generate any cash flow. As a result, we don’t get any compounding of value with gold. In addition, more gold gets mined each year which has the effect of reducing the value of gold, just like it does with the dollar when the government prints more money. Gold is also not a true hedge against inflation over the long term because, historically, it has not kept up with inflation. And finally, it costs money to store gold, so some of the gold has to be sold to pay for the storage fees.

Manipulated Performance Compare the graphs shown to see how gold compares to the stock market over different time periods. Over the past 10 years, the stock market drastically outperformed gold, but over the past 20 years, gold outperformed the stock market. Over the past 100 years, the market has done substantially better than gold. What you tend to see is that if someone is trying to sell you gold, they will use a time period that makes gold look really good. If someone is trying to sell you on the stock market, they will use a time period that makes the market look really good. Don’t take anything you see in the media at face value. Do your own due diligence and make sure you aren’t being manipulated by skewed data and charts. 20

Bottom Line Owning gold is neither good nor bad in an investment portfolio, but gold tends to be more correlated with the movement of the market today than it has in past times, so it’s less of a hedge than it used to be. Gold is appropriate as one of many holdings in a diversified portfolio. I personally prefer to own “paper gold” in the form of gold ETFs, so that I can buy and sell it electronically on the open market in real time. It is generally not wise to have more than 5 percent of your portfolio invested in any single stock and I believe the same applies to gold. Just make sure that you have properly diversified your portfolio among stocks, bonds and precious metals at levels that are appropriate for your age and retirement goals.

Darrin Hackney is widely known in Wichita – either through his many years as an affable, talented, bottle-tossing bartender, or as an affable, talented, camera-wielding photographer. But old friends who run into him and offer to buy him a drink are surprised at his response: “No thanks, I don’t drink anymore.” On June 25, the man behind Darrin Hackney Photography will celebrate two years of sobriety. And life looks a lot better than it used to, he says. “Without alcohol I’m not destructive to myself. I get to have joy now. I’m less angry. There are things I was angry about and I don’t even know why. With whatever time I have left – we’re not promised tomorrow – how much can I still go and see and do?” The day Hackney quit drinking, he downloaded an app called I Am Sober, which tracks sobriety days as well as money saved based on prior drinking habits. As of June 1, the amount totals almost $13,000. Hackney’s relationship with alcohol started when he was an 18-year-old drinking 3.2-beer – legal by Kansas law then. He quit work at McDonald’s after being yelled at for not cleaning the shake machine correctly, so he got a job at a bar instead on his 21st birthday. And that’s how Hackney’s long-time career in the bar industry began. “I never thought it would be the fork in the road. I had planned to be a computer programmer,” he said with a laugh. “I ended up bartending and managing in that industry for 30-plus years.” Being in the bartending world meant always being around people who drink. It didn’t seem like a problem at the time; it was a good job and good way to make money. But there was always a lot of depression – the byproduct of alcohol, Hackney says. “I discovered that I’m a binge drinker. I can’t have one. I drink until I can’t remember what I’m doing,” he said. “I’ve had DUIs, I’ve been in jail. I’ve had people say, ‘Did you learn from the last one?’ But in a brown-out or a blackout you do things you don’t normally do. As a normal person I would hand you my keys. But when I was drinking, I had my alter ego – I called him Darryl – and he’d fight you for those keys.” Hackney said Covid was the kicker. He was depressed, and without being able to see family or friends or go anywhere other than the liquor store or the grocery store, he drank. Drinking made him depressed, so he drank more to stop being depressed. Rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat, he says. 28

“One morning I woke up and the little guy in my head said, ‘Stop, you’re done,’ ” Hackney said. He listened to that voice. He knew it was the day to start fresh and to never go back. Though the change was seemingly instant, there was a history that led to that point. “There were a lot of times before that I prayed, ‘I wish I could quit.’ A lot of heartache, a lot of things I said, a lot of people I made walk away from me because of things I said. It’s a lonely world. It was an illusion for the longest time.” Today, Hackney doesn’t go to bars with friends unless there’s live music – it’s no fun to be the guy standing around watching everyone else drink. And he’s made other lifestyle changes too, like eating healthier, working out and losing weight. “I’ve had a lot of people reach out to me and ask how I did it. Totally my opinion, but you have to quit 100 percent. It’s a light switch. You’re either doing it or not doing it. It’s a brash way to say it, but it’s actually the truth.” “I found I have a lot more peace and tolerance with people and things around me. I’m just enjoying life.”

‘It Helps You Get Your Life Back’ Former Addict Sings Praises of Medication-Assisted Treatment Travis Berger’s life was in shambles. The Wichitan had been a functioning opioid addict for more than a decade, but things took a turn for the worse when he started using heroin. That’s when he lost his two young children, and both he and his wife ended up in jail. At his lowest point, Berger couldn’t imagine how he would ever get back up again. But he did, and he says he owes it all to Dr. Greg Lakin and the medication-assisted treatment he underwent at one of Lakin’s centers. Berger had gone through other treatment programs and was unsuccessful, but Lakin’s program – with its combination of prescription medication, counseling and care – made the difference for him. “It was a long journey but I’m benefitting from it now,” he said. Today he and wife, Rena, live with their children, Gracie Lou, 6, and Travis Jr., 7, in a nice home in Wichita, and Berger owns his own heating and air company, Air Quality Control.

Recovery in 2018, where Lakin was practicing at the time. An important part of Berger’s treatment was taking Suboxone, a prescription medicine used to treat opioid addiction in adults. The drug is used in conjunction with counseling and behavioral therapy. “It covers the receptors that respond to opiates and it gives your brain time to rewire itself. It helps you get your life back together,” he said. The drug also serves as a deterrent to taking opioids, because Suboxone patients will get sick if they take opioids while using the drug. After leaving inpatient treatment at Valley Hope, Berger went to a Suboxone maintenance program at Center for Change. Eventually patients are weaned off of Suboxone once their brain has had time to heal from addiction. Berger says his life is proof that this type of treatment is successful. He offers this advice to addicts: “If you don’t want to be sick, if you want to stop the withdrawals and not hurt all the time, get into a program. You have to get yourself out of the surroundings, and sometimes that’s really hard to do. But you can’t do it by yourself. The opiate crisis is out of hand, and this is one way to fix it – and it really works.”

Functioning Addict

Berger said it was a surgery he underwent as a 14-year-old that started his opioid addiction. “I got pain pills then, and that triggered my brain to think I needed those all the time,” he said. As a functioning addict, Berger had a good job and was surviving, though certainly not thriving. But after 10 or 15 years of being an opioid addict, Berger started taking heroin, and his life took a sharp downturn. One day after taking heroin while living in Oklahoma City, Berger fell into a deep sleep on the couch and his two children, ages 1 and 3, left the house and were wandering around. “The cops showed up to see why these kids are outside and I got taken to jail and my kids got put into state custody in Oklahoma City,” he said. Berger was sent to a 30-day detox program in California, which he said was a good step in his recovery because it got him away from his regular habits and friends. But he relapsed just two days before graduating from the program. “As an opiate addict, your brain craves that hit, so you’re good for four hours, but after that four hours you need more,” he said. “I just kept messing up.”

What they witness and carry is an often unimaginable and heavy burden. “We want to facilitate healing and growth for all who seek it, but we see veterans and first responders as advocates who lead lives of service,” Brian says. “We hope to be the advocate for those who advocate for others.” The C2C Reset 12-week course is complimentary to these individuals and their family members, minus the small cost of books. “We hope to help each person heal and move forward with his or her life, as well as help participants establish successful strategies to reach their goals as they realize what might be holding them back.” Through the program, Brian has been able to help veterans, first responders and the general public find healing as they join together in work places, churches, YMCAs and even over Skype or Zoom. He challenges each person to find his or her “pit crew” – others who can create accountability and provide encouragement and support. Brian suggests that “allowing others to provide support, in addition to the health coaching and life coaching we provide, can be affirming and life changing.” In the Courage to Change coursework, clients learn about the science of the body and how anatomy and physiology respond to

Blueprint for a Financial Future Yeisley Financial Group

When Randy Yeisley transitioned to the financial services industry, it was an unanticipated move – but also, in retrospect, one that made complete sense. He’d been an engineer for 20 years in the telecommunications field when he found himself at a turning point. What did he want to do with his life? He also had a 401(k) on his hands that needed to be dealt with. “I realized I’d been a subject matter expert, at least in the field of telecom, my whole career,” Yeisley says. “And here I am with my 401(k). And I’m totally ignorant of what to do. So I began to study and research – what do I do with my investments?” Reasoning that others must be in the same boat, he founded Yeisley Financial Group in 2006 to help investors manage their money. He discovered that many of his engineering and marketing skills translated well to his new field. “I feel like I bring perspective to the investment advisory business, just because I’m very analytical. I’m kind of a math nerd thanks to my engineering background,” Yeisley explains. “And so I’m always using charts and graphs to prove something, because I feel like math cuts through all the marketing spin and gets down to the truth of the matter.” On his road to becoming a licensed financial advisor, Yeisley discovered how much that background set him apart. Over time his investor base grew, with clients making comments such as, “We can actually understand what you’re telling us.”

A Leader in Retirement Planning Today Yeisley Financial Group employs six people, including Yeisley’s wife, Stephanie, the company’s director of operations. After 16 years in the business, Yeisley has seen his clients’ average age drop from 60-something to 50-something, as people take more initiative in their retirement planning. “I believe trust is 80 percent of this business; 20 percent is financial products,” he says. And to back that up, Yeisley’s been a fiduciary since first opening his doors, even before advisors were required by law to put clients’ interests first.

The New Era of Financial Planning Some widely-held beliefs in the financial planning industry come under scrutiny in Yeisley’s incisive analysis, one of them being the 4-percent guideline for how much a retiree can withdraw each year without depleting their retirement savings. Instead of relying on a vague rule, Yeisley uses something called a Monte Carlo simulation, a sophisticated statistical analysis that games out 1,000 possible scenarios for annual stock market returns and their impact on an investor’s portfolio. For a particular investor, Yeisley can predict the future success of a retirement plan. “Why use a rule of thumb, which is really a generic cookie cutter solution?” Yeisley asks. “Why not actually do the plan, run the analysis based on assets? If I have an 85 percent probability of success, I have a high probability that I’m not going to run out of money before I run out of life.”

Due Diligence No matter who you choose as a financial advisor, Yeisley recommends that investors do their research on Investment Adviser Public Disclosure, a website at adviserinfo.sec.gov, where advisors are required to list disclosure events, licenses, state registrations and more.

Yeisley also likes to say that his firm is “planning focused, not product focused.” He spends time with each client, getting to know their goals, assets and risk tolerance. He asks lots of questions and only then draws up a long-term investing blueprint. In addition to equities and bonds, Yeisley incorporates a wide range of insurance and annuity vehicles and other investment products to create a personalized strategy for growth and income. He’s also an expert on optimizing an investor’s Medicare, Social Security and longterm care options.

A. Tanganyika Falls has been an

excellent addition to the wildlife park where guests can cool off during the summer months. While kids play in the waterfalls, water slides, tipping buckets, etc., parents can sit back with a frozen drink or local beer and relax, knowing their kids are in a safe and fun environment. With all the enhancements made to the splash park, Tanganyika Falls meets and exceeds the CDC Model Aquatic Health Code, considered the gold standard for water facilities. New this summer, Cabanalows, are the perfect semi-private structures for families or small groups to take a break from the heat, and are available to rent for several hours or all day. So come spend an hour or the entire day. It’s a cool place to be this summer.

Q. Tell us about Safari Park and what we can expect in the future at Tanganyika.

A. The Safari Park will be a significant addition to Tanganyika that

will house our new white rhinos from Africa, which should arrive just before the Twilight Tour, along with a second herd of giraffes and other African hoofstock. Guests will be able to experience the animals on a train, a truck or possibly even a kayak.

Q. What is the Twilight Tour being held on June 11?

A. On the evening of Saturday, June 11, the park closes in order

to host Tanganyika’s Twilight Tour, our popular Tanganyika Wildlife Park annual fundraiser. Attendees will enjoy behindthe-scenes viewings, local appetizers, beer, wine samples and more. You won’t want to miss the chance for these once-in-a-lifetime park experiences, custom animal art and incredible silent auction items – plus we guarantee you will have an amazing wild evening like no other at Tanganyika. Q. Tell us about your fitness journey. Have you always been an athlete?

A. I played football at Grinnell College and actually got

my undergraduate degree in economics. I was doing personal training on the side, but I thought I needed a “J-O-B,” so I moved to Wichita in 2013 to work in commodities at Koch. It didn’t last long. While my wife and I were in the waiting room to find out if she was pregnant, I realized if I wanted to jump out on my own into the fitness world, which was where my heart was, I needed to take the leap. So I did, and in 2015 I started my first personal training business.

They are people who believe in the value of their health, but have totally neglected themselves because they’re serving everyone else. You have to quit pouring from an empty cup, and we’re helping people change their mentality about that.

Q. Did your business take off right away? A. I owe a lot to Landon Langston at Optimal Performance

and Marquis Bradley at Omnicut. They both helped me get started, and within six months of going out on my own, I had a full load of clients – and I also had a kid. But the hours were so extreme; I was working really early in the morning until late at night, and I wasn’t around for my baby and my wife. So that’s when I started thinking about becoming a business owner instead of just an independent personal trainer.

Q. How has your business changed since those early days of your career?

A. Well, for one thing I’ve learned to be a better business

owner. My first three businesses completely failed. In 2018 we took our tax return and launched EP Fitness & Personal Training in our current space in Andover. In late 2019 we were really growing our boot camp with sessions of 20 to 25 people. But then Covid hit, and we went from 110 clients in March 2020 to 23 clients just a few weeks later. Even though we took a huge hit from that, Covid was actually the best thing that happened to our business because it helped us identify ourselves – what our niche is and where we can do the most good.

Q. What does your method look like? A. We don’t do gymnastics moves like CrossFit; a lot of our

clients have hip and shoulder replacements. The basis of what we do is weightlifting, because people over the age of 50 need to be lifting weights more than others. But we’re also helping you reprogram your mind and discover that you’re the type of person who can enjoy exercise. Peer accountability is so important too. My wife Jaclyn and I developed what we call the CRAFT method: Community; Reprogram Your Mentality; Accountability; Fitness You Can Learn to Love; and Total Body, Mind and Soul Transformation. We challenge people with Scripture and with a word at the end of every session. We are helping people take on an identity of excellence. We want them to believe our mantra and live it: “I am EP Strong.”

Q. What did you learn about yourselves in that process?

A. We discovered that intimate, personal relationships are

our sweet spot. Just working out more and eating less isn’t working for the majority of people who need to lose weight; there is a lot of change psychologically that needs to happen. We also saw a sector of people who

Opera Has Spicy Night in Store for Music Lovers Written by SPLURGE! staff

A spicy and spirited show is in store for concertgoers as the Wichita Grand Opera presents its upcoming Latin Night outdoor concert July 1, featuring an internationally acclaimed husband-and-wife singing duo. WGO general and music director Whitney Reader promises a “colorful” event that will include local talent and even food trucks at the venue. “The Opera is presenting this evening to honor our wonderful Latino community here in Wichita,” said Reader, who took the helm at WGO in January. “It’s a wonderful way to celebrate who we are in Wichita. It will be an exciting evening.” The location also makes the event unique: It will be held at the Paula and Barry Downing Amphitheater on the northeast side of the Wichita Art Museum. The monumental and colorful Confetti Chandelier by international glass artist Dale Chihuly can be seen inside the museum from the amphitheater, and will make a stunning backdrop for the stage. Reader said there isn’t a lot of room on stage, so a podium will be built to accommodate the performers. The celebrities of the evening are soprano María Antúnez and tenor Martín Nusspaumer. The couple, originally from Uruguay, now live in Miami and travel far and wide to star in operas, perform with symphonies, and appear on famous stages across the world.

An Evening of Music and Giving WGO Event Will Provide Aid to Ukraine Written by SPLURGE! staff

The Wichita Grand Opera is offering Wichitans the chance to hear amazing live music while helping the people of Ukraine in a very tangible way. The event, called “Aid for People of Ukraine,” is set for June 11 at the Wichita Country Club. Dr. Dennis Ross, WGO president and CEO, said that guests will be treated to hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and wine, and a sit-down dinner, as well as classical music from the internationally acclaimed Orfeo Trio. All the while they’ll be supporting both the opera and the people of Ukraine via the local branch of Orphan Grain Train (OGT), which is raising funds to send a shipment of goods to Ukrainians.

in Norfolk, Nebraska, transportation of items is secured, and the donations collected in Wichita make their way to faraway lands. A single shipment will include thousands of boxes. In April, a shipment of goods from OGT’s Wichita branch landed in the Republic of Georgia, some 6,300 miles away. Shipments from Wichita have gone to Latvia, the Congo in Africa, and several missions and schools on Native American reservations. OGT Wichita branch manager John Evans said the local group helped assemble items for an emergency air shipment to Ukraine shortly after the invasion, which is an extremely expensive endeavor. The next shipments will be via ocean freight, a more economical yet still costly option. “We’ve fallen back into the regular routine of shipping on ships, focusing on refugees in Eastern European nations,” Evans said.

Refugees in Republic of Georgia recently received clothing and supplies from the Wichita branch of Orphan Grain Train.

The Orfeo Trio, consisting of American pianist Julie Bees, Russian cellist Leonid Shukaev and Russian violinist Evgeny Zvonnikov, was formed in 2012 in Wichita, first performing as the official piano trio of Wichita State University’s College of Fine Arts, School of Music. The musicians will perform in the living room area from 6:30 to 7 p.m. before guests move to the party room for the meal. The Orfeo Trio is donating its performance so that all proceeds will go toward the evening’s causes, and the $250 ticket fee is 100 percent tax deductible. Ross said giving to OGT’s Wichita branch is one of the best ways to provide help to Ukrainians in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion on Feb. 24. That’s because OGT operates with extremely low administrative costs – only 1.8 cent of every dollar goes to administration and fundraising – and the long-running organization has shipping contacts in all parts of the world. The Wichita branch of OGT opened five years ago, and has collected donations of everything from clothing to medical supplies to quilts to sporting equipment to send to people in impoverished nations. The organization is in contact with groups around the world who help coordinate shipments of goods. With help from OGT headquarters 80

Donations of very good used clothing; over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen and aspirin; and medical supplies like walkers, crutches and wheelchairs can be dropped off at the OGT warehouse at 911 W. Maple St. in Wichita from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesdays and Saturdays. For sizable donations that require pickup or assistance, call Evans at 316.932.8703. OGT also requests monetary donations for the shipping costs, which have increased greatly in the last two years. “We’d love to have 300 people at the event and really help the Orphan Grain Train, since getting these shipments to Ukraine is so expensive,” Ross said. “It’s going to be a wonderful night for a very worthy cause.”
