New WSU Athletic Director Brings Drive for Winning on Court, Field and Classroom Wichita State’s new AD shares more than a love of sports with the school’s student athletes. He’s a student himself at age 44 – working on a doctorate degree in P-20 and community education. “I just felt like our students need to see someone committed to education,” said Kevin Saal, who started his doctoral studies while serving as the AD at Murray State. Saal comes from a background in academics and athletics. His father, Frank “Skip” Saal, was a psychology professor and department head at Kansas State University before finishing his career as provost at St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, New York. His mother, Catherine, was an educator as well. An older sister inspired Saal to try out for the diving team as a freshman at Manhattan High. The team went on to win two state team championships during Saal’s time there.

earned a scholarship at Texas Christian University. After graduation he headed to the University of Kansas to earn a master’s degree in sports psychology – only to discover that the school was dropping the program. Saal got a master’s degree in sports administration instead. He worked at K-State from 2000 to 2005, at the University of Missouri-Kansas City from 2005–2007, then spent 12 years at the University of Kentucky, rising to executive associate director of athletics. He became AD at Murray State in 2019. During his time there, he oversaw the school’s move to the Missouri Valley Conference after it had spent 74 years in the Ohio Valley Conference. The whirlwind of athletic conference realignments is one of several challenges he’ll confront at WSU. The Shockers jumped from the Valley to the more prestigious American Athletic Conference four years ago, and to some extent have succeeded on the court and field, winning a half-dozen conference championships since (in men’s basketball, softball, volleyball, women’s cross country and men’s track and field).

But the school’s highest-profile team – men’s basketball – slipped last year, and three of the AAC’s most successful programs – Houston, Cincinnati and UCF – are leaving for the “I was a little bit of an adrenaline and adventure junkie,” he said. Saal said the new-look AAC remains a “very competitive league,” enough so to earn more than the one automatic NCAA tournament bid each conference is awarded.

Saal sums up his approach with a phrase associated with legendary former K-State football coach Bill Snyder: “Get a little better every day.”

“I think it can be and will be a multi-bid league in nearly all our sports,” he said.

But don’t assume he’ll be satisfied with effort alone.

The basketball team’s slide was followed by a mass transfer of players and the firing of Saal’s predecessor, Darron Boatright, amid complaints that WSU had not moved quickly enough into the NCAA’s new era of “name, image and likeness” (NIL) deals, which allow college athletes to profit from their status – for instance, by endorsing products on billboards or in TV commercials. Saal, who sat down with SPLURGE! magazine six days into his job, said he had already met with the owners of Armchair Strategies, a company formed to help WSU athletes land NIL deals. “I can tell you we’re in a better spot than 10 days ago,” he said. Making sure WSU stays competitive with other AAC teams in terms of athletic facilities and opportunities may be his biggest ongoing job – one known as “friendraising and fundraising” in the business. “It starts with genuine and authentic relationships” with potential donors, he said. After selling the success of the school’s athletic teams, he plans to stress how WSU prepares student-athletes for life beyond school. Yet another goal is bringing “stability and consistency” to a program that some fans have viewed with skepticism since former basketball coach Gregg Marshall’s ousting two years ago.

“Everything with us starts with winning AAC championships,” Saal said. Former colleagues and bosses praised Saal’s work ethic. Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart cited his “incredible focus on education and a competitive spirit.” Saal spent his first days on the job meeting with WSU President Rick Muma, then began working his way through 15-minute get-acquainted meetings with each of the athletic department’s 100 employees. He asked each about a challenge facing them and possible solutions. He’s joined in Wichita by his wife of 23 years, Jennifer, who he met while working at a swimming pool in Manhattan. “She’s a five- to seven-mile-a-day runner. Thus, she keeps me very active,” said Saal, who also enjoys hiking, hunting and fishing. Their two sons have stayed behind in Murray, Kentucky. Saal said Jacob, 22, has fallen in love with the restaurant business while Alex, 20, will be a dorm resident assistant at Murray State this fall, after serving as his dorm’s athletic director last year.

Is It Time for an Annuity? In the financial services realm, there is probably no other word that invokes such strong and opinionated rhetoric as the word “annuity.” In fact, just Google the word and read a few of the articles and opinions that come up. Most of them will probably be negative. Why? Because most people don’t have a thorough understanding of the different kinds of annuities. They may only be describing one or two types of annuities. The truth is that there are good annuities and bad annuities. How can you tell the difference? You will have to find an advisor you trust who will explain the pros and cons of each type of annuity. Annuities are some of the most misunderstood and misrepresented financial products on the market today, so it is important to choose wisely. Not all annuities are good and not all annuities are bad. So, how do you decide if an annuity is good or if it is bad? The scope of this article is not sufficient for a thorough analysis of all types of annuities, but let’s discuss the benefits of one type of annuity product that we use in our firm — indexed annuities. There are two primary reasons that our firm uses them: lifetime income and “safe growth.”

Lifetime Income If you are fortunate enough to have an employersponsored pension plan, your retirement income is guaranteed for as long as you live, and that really helps with long-range retirement income planning. But what if you don’t have a pension, or the one you have is really small? Then you could create a private pension plan with a portion of your investment portfolio using a specialized indexed annuity that provides for lifetime income. Many of these products will also provide for additional income benefits if a long-term care event should occur. These types of products are certainly beneficial if you have a long life, but what happens if you should have a shortened life expectancy? Many people wrongly think that the insurance company keeps the rest of the money, but that isn’t true with today’s newer lifetime income annuities.

that is focused on “safe growth” rather than lifetime income. What do I mean by safe growth? Essentially, the “safe growth” indexed annuity is a product that does three things really well: (1) protects your money from any market losses, (2) provides the potential for a reasonable return on your money, and (3) doesn’t have any annual fees. These are considered a hybrid financial product that are meant to provide safety of your principal, similar to a bank, while providing a potential return that is usually better than a bank. This product is a long-term product, but it has better liquidity than a long-term CD and can provide some real value for a conservative portfolio. You could also consider this product as a bond alternative in your investment portfolio.

Bottom Line We are in very unique financial times. Not only are the values of the equities in your portfolio down, but bonds are down as well due to rising interest rates. Due to continually rising inflation and the Fed’s probable path of continued increase in interest rates, we could very well be facing a recession. Don’t expect different results in your portfolio unless you’re willing to choose some different approaches to the investment vehicles you use in your portfolio. Now, more than ever, it is time to take a different approach to your investment strategy. The right kind of annuity could be really beneficial to your overall portfolio in times like these.

Time For a Flu Shot! Research Center Enrolling for Vaccine Study Written by SPLURGE! Staff

Influenza numbers were at a nearly historic low last year, thanks to pandemic-related safety measures like masks, hand-washing and crowd avoidance. But now that those practices are falling by the wayside, one Wichita doctor is reminding people to prepare for the upcoming flu season by getting a flu shot. “Ever since the Covid pandemic has started, we have seen a reduction in vaccinations because there has been a reduction in physician visits,” said Dr. Terry Klein, a family physician at Family Medicine East and a partner in Wichita research facility AMR (The Alliance for Multispecialty Research). “But it is still important to get the influenza vaccination, especially those in high risk groups.” High risk groups include the elderly, those with underlying health conditions, pregnant women and health care workers. The Centers for Disease Control recommends everyone age 6 months and up receive an annual influenza vaccination by the end of October. “If you get the flu vaccine in October, you’re probably covered until the time you most likely will see the flu,” Klein said. “It’s a good idea to get it anytime between now and until the supply is gone in February. It takes about two weeks to see the full effects of the vaccine while your immune system gets adjusted.” Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. According to the CDC, on average, about 8 percent of the U.S. population gets sick from flu each season, with a range of between 3 to 11 percent, depending on the season. Klein said that, historically in the Wichita community, flu cases tend to peak from late fall through early spring. He said having both the influenza and Covid vaccinations, including boosters, is the best course of action. “The truth is, RSV 16

fits into that picture, too, and although we have a vaccine in production, we don’t have one that is commercially available yet.” RSV is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms, but can be serious, especially for infants and older adults. The CDC has decided that flu vaccines and Covid vaccines can be given at the same time in separate injection sites. Klein said that a single injection that would contain both the influenza and Covid vaccines is on the drawing board, but isn’t available yet. AMR is currently enrolling adults ages 18 and older in an investigational flu vaccine clinical research study at three of its area sites. Qualified participants must be 18 years of age or older, be an otherwise healthy individual and meet other study criteria. Participants will receive at no cost all study-related medical exams, lab tests and either an investigational vaccine or licensed flu vaccine. Compensation up to $1,600 is available for time and travel. “Researchers are always trying to improve the flu vaccine – how to make them in a more timely fashion, make them less costly and make them more effective,” he said.

Now pets have access to those services, too, thanks to an east-side veterinary clinic. Wichita veterinarian Dr. Brenda Cederberg opened Urgent Pet Care in July 2021. It’s conveniently located near Greenwich and K-96, making it a quick trip for pet owners coming from the south, east or west. Cederberg had a desire to open an after-hours clinic in Wichita after seeing urgent care clinics for animals in other cities. “I knew the human side had urgent care that was meeting a need for people, so it made sense to me to explore that for veterinary,” she said. To support her vision, she left a general practice in Andover, where she had worked for five-plus years doing mostly orthopedics and canine rehabilitation, and joined the University of Missouri Veterinary Health Center at Kansas City Animal Emergency Center. Being the managing veterinarian there gave Cederberg two years of preparation for the different pace and skill set required for an emergency clinic. While Wichita has an emergency vet hospital that’s open 24/7, Cederberg was more interested in filling the after-hours gap for pets who get sick or injured when their regular veterinarian’s office is closed. “Wounds are a big one – lacerations, bite wounds,” Cederberg said of the reasons owners bring their pets to her clinic. “We see pets with illnesses, vomiting. If they don’t feel well and the owner doesn’t think their pet can wait, we try to accommodate pretty much anything.” In May, Dr. Laura Hellman joined the clinic, bringing the unique skills of animal chiropractic and veterinary acupuncture to the practice. “It’s powerful as an addition to western medicine,” she said. “There are some conditions that in western medicine we don’t have effective treatments for, but they can be improved with these methods.”

Hellman has been practicing chiropractic and acupuncture for about seven of the 10 years she’s been in small-animal veterinary medicine. While she sees pets for emergency care alongside Cederberg, she also has appointments available for animal acupuncture or chiropractic care before the clinic opens to the public in the evening. One of the unique things about Urgent Pet Care’s office is its open concept; there’s no wall dividing the front lobby from the patient rooms. “We felt it would be best for communication with the client to have an open floor plan where they can see what’s going on,” Cederberg said. “Most of the time people can come back with their pet, be there during the exam, stay with them if they need fluids. We try to include the owner since most pets feel more comfortable with their owner around.” Cederberg occasionally helps her husband, Kalven, with his businesses, 2DOGS Concrete and Mud Haus event venue and gallery in downtown Wichita. The couple has four dogs – Cash, Maynard, Odie and Petunia – as well as a cat named Alf. Their son, Kollin, manages a restaurant in Kearney, Nebraska, and their daughter Korrie helped open Urgent Pet Care and continues to work at the hospital with client and patient care. Hellman and husband Michael, a police officer, live on a small farm in Augusta with four horses, dogs, cats, ducks and chickens. “I’ve got my horses in my backyard,” she said. “My husband and I each have one we ride, I have a retired horse who’s living out his golden years, and I have a yearling who I hope will be my next riding horse.”

A. Jay: I worked in the aerospace industry as a leader in human

I have a wife and four daughters and we’re a single-income family, so it was definitely a leap of faith! Q. What are your goals for HomeWell? A. Mick: Working in healthcare for so many years, I’ve seen

What we do is not advanced, but it is critical, keeping people at home safe with their families. It’s companionship, it’s compassionate service, on an individual basis, by people you can trust. If the family or client wants it done in a specific way, that’s how we’re going to do it. I started in a Catholic hospital. The Sisters who ran it were very influential, teaching me that caring for individuals is more than a career. It is an honor. It’s not a job; it’s a calling. Jay: I absolutely agree with that. Our motto is to serve God by providing quality care for families, and opportunities for our caregivers. Our goal is to be a trusted resource for the families we serve. We can’t wait to get to know those families.

Q. Mick, what’s your history with this industry? A. Mick: I started as a nurse in 1981 with direct patient care,

worked my way up into senior leadership, and then began consulting to help medical clinics with licensing, accreditation and operations. I was drawn to this opportunity to take all of my experience and put it in the right type of setting. My belief is that if we’re going to do something, we’re going to do it in a quality manner and deliver the highest level of care. I’m a stickler for detail, and for making sure our clients and their families are taken care of – there’s nothing more important than that.

Hospice Staff Helps Fulfill a Dying Wish that would bring you the most joy?’ And she said, ‘Yes. I just want him to know how much I love him.’ ” Together Monica and Armando had three young children, and one of Monica’s main concerns was that their children wouldn’t retain any memories of her. In that moment, Hillary began planning. Hillary contacted the staff at Regent Park, who said they would be honored to have Monica live the rest of her days at Regent Park. In less than four hours the teams at Phoenix Home Care and Hospice and Regent Park had the entire ceremony planned. From the cake made by Regent Park’s chef, to the flowers, music, officiant, wedding dress, candles, champagne and more, everything fell into place. There was even a flower girl dress for Monica’s daughter. The only thing left to do was get Monica well enough to discharge from the hospital and relocated to Regent Park. Hillary worked closely with the medical team to coordinate a regimen to relieve Monica’s pain, stabilize symptoms and maintain at a steady level of coherence where she could fully embrace and enjoy her wedding day. On Thursday, April 21, 2022 Monica transferred to Regent Park. Friday morning, she married Armando and lived a beautiful life for 27 more days. “It means a lot, just as the nurse,” says Hillary. “Seeing how much pain she was in in the beginning, and seeing our teams come together, especially for her family to see that, it’s monumental.”

To marry Armando, and to never be forgotten. These were the two wishes that Monica Velasquez shared with Phoenix Home Care and Hospice nurse, Hillary Kreutzer, as Hillary laid in the hospital bed holding her. As the general inpatient nurse for Phoenix, Hillary primarily works with patients who have elected hospice services while in the hospital. Through hospice services, Hillary is able to not only care for the patient’s physical needs, but their spiritual and emotional needs as they near the end of life. She meets them where they are at on their healthcare journey, and holistically evaluates their needs to ensure she is providing the care they need at the time they need it. At the time, Monica was experiencing severe pain indicating her cervical cancer was progressing. She also began showing signs of end of life. According to Hillary, Monica had reached the point where she wanted to give up. “Being the nurse that I am, I climbed into the bed with her, held her, and told her it was OK to not be OK,” said Hillary. “Once I was laying with Monica for a while and got her to calm down, she said ‘Can I marry Armando?’ and I said, ‘Is that something

Shaq Attack Basketball Great Bringing Attention to Childhood Literacy Written by Amy Palser

Shaquille O’Neal is coming to Koch Arena – but he’s here for books, not basketball. Wichita literacy program Storytime Village tapped one of the world’s biggest athletes (in size, personality and popularity) to tackle a really big problem: the fact that 85 percent of African American fourthgraders are below proficiency in reading. Shaq’s appearance is part of the Kansas Literacy Festival lineup, which runs Sept. 8–10, and aims to encourage a love of reading in school-age kids. Shaq will be at the Sept. 10 Hoops 4 Literacy event at Koch Arena to meet kids, answer questions, and watch community leaders square off on the court. “I think it’s going to be a win for our entire community,” said Storytime Village founder and director Prisca Barnes.

The 7-foot-1, 325-pound NBA star is known for his powerful athleticism and his larger-than-life personality, but among his talents is writing children’s books, including Shaq and the Beanstalk and a series called “Little Shaq.”

Storytime Village will distribute 2,500 tickets to students through local schools, and members of the public can purchase tickets, too. They’re holding a competition leading up to the event called “Ask Shaq,” where kids can submit a question that the four-time NBA champ will answer in person at the event. The evening will begin with food trucks, story reading, face painting, balloon twisting and book giveaways outside the arena. The Hoops 4 Literacy event is the grand finale to the threeday festival that starts with a teacher conference focusing on kindergarten readiness with the Read and Rise Breakfast Gala, workshops and speakers. Day two is the Champions Gala, a celebration of literacy and a way to thank the program partners, featuring food, live music and an appearance by former Harlem Globetrotter Lynette Woodard.

A Big Undertaking Storytime Village started with a book that launched an idea. While in college, Barnes, a Wichita native, was producing a children’s book called “The Magic Tooth” along with her brother, Jesse, when she first learned about the literacy problem in her own community. “I had a literacy-rich environment when I grew up; we brought books home, we had our own home library. My mom was a kindergarten teacher and my dad was a pastor, and I had those fundamentals and probably took them for granted,” she said. “But once I learned about this massive issue, something started tugging at me and I started investigating: What is it about literacy? And what about all 28

of the challenges that come when you don’t have that foundation of reading well? I knew I had to do something.” Barnes researched starting a nonprofit, and Storytime Village became official as a 501(c)(3) in 2014, with the mission that it still follows today: To inspire a lifelong love of reading for underserved Kansas children from birth to age 8. The organization hosts a statewide literacy festival each year in Wichita, partners with local schools, and has a television show called “Storytime Village” on Wichita’s PBS Kansas. During the summer it hosts LEAP (Literacy, Entrepreneurship and the Arts Project) for second- through fifth-grade students in Wichita. The “boot camp” teaches students to write, illustrate and publish their own books, and offers field trips to literary-minded locations like Wichita State University, Barnes & Noble and the Wichita Art Museum. “It’s a lot of work, but this is passion work,” Barnes said, “so I’m happy to do it.” For more information or to purchase tickets, visit storytimevillage.org or call 316.719.9336.

One Pill Can Kill Fentanyl Crisis Continues to Plague Wichita, Nation Overdose deaths from fentanyl continue to rise, highlighting the epidemic that has taken its toll on the nation and Kansas. New data from the Centers for Disease Control shows overdose deaths involving opioids – including the synthetic opioid fentanyl – increased from an estimated 70,029 in 2020 to 80,816 in 2021. Meanwhile, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment said that of the 338 overdose deaths in Kansas in the first half of 2021, 149 involved fentanyl. Law enforcement agencies are doing their best to deal with the issue, including carrying Narcan (or naloxone) nasal spray to revive overdose patients and seizing illegal fentanyl pills during traffic stops. While prescription fentanyl abuse is certainly a concern, the more alarming issue is powdered fentanyl from drug cartels that is pressed into Percocet-appearing, 30-milligram “blues.” It is cheap but very powerful. What makes the drugs so deadly, of course, is that people are buying various products off the street without really knowing what’s in them. As a result, people are overdosing without even knowing they have taken fentanyl. The counterfeit pressed pills containing fentanyl are cheap, strong, and readily available in Wichita. A fentanyl overdose can happen very quickly, especially when smoked or injected. In July alone the Wichita Police Department revived six fentanyl overdose patients with the use of Narcan (or naloxone) nasal spray. The medication can be used to block the effects of an opioid overdose and has saved countless lives. In April, WPD seized nearly 7,000 illegal fentanyl pills during a traffic stop on I-35. The pills were believed to have originated in Mexico and were bound for Missouri. Attempting to tackle the epidemic, Wichita law enforcement agencies called for a town hall meeting in July, and highlighted the first-ever National Fentanyl Awareness Day on May 10. “This is a dangerous drug that is affecting our community, not just here in Wichita, but globally. Please don’t buy or take prescription meds not prescribed by a pharmacist,” WPD said in a Tweet.

With the increased amount of high-potency opiates being produced, it is crucial that more people are trained in the use of Narcan. Because of the high potency of fentanyl, multiple doses of Narcan may be required. It is very important to get medical attention immediately if you suspect someone has overdosed on fentanyl. Overdose typically includes pinpoint pupils; slow, shallow breathing; bluish lips; and loss of consciousness. Taking pressed pills is like playing Russian roulette – you never know whether that single dose will be the one that kills you. The good news is, there is help out there. UP Wichita Woman Takes Farming to New Heights Written by John Huthmacher

A Wichita woman has taken her green thumb to new heights with a 15,000-square-foot urban farm atop the Fidelity Bank RISE Car Park in downtown Wichita. Leah Dannar-Garcia (pronounced Gar-sha) launched RISE Farms a little more than a year ago, and it’s now full force into its first growing season. Growing produce for 30 Wichita restaurants, the high-rise farm is an upstart extension of Dannar-Garcia’s Firefly Farm operation in east Wichita. The urban farm represents what she hopes is a movement to enable sustainable jobs and ample food supply in an area that has relied heavily on exports and import sales. The nontraditional farming practices introduced by Dannar-Garcia include a solar farm utilizing 204 solar panels that provide power to the RISE Car Park, located between Waterman and English. The building’s ground floor is home to the new GROW Giesen Plant Shop and First Mile Cantine. 34

Farm offerings grown on top of the building and sold to area restaurants include specialty crop vegetables representing all four seasons, grown year-round. Currently in season are peppers, squash, carrots, kale, cucumbers, beans, eggplant and tomatoes, and herbs like basil and lavender. Unlike commodity crop operations that focus on single crops such as almonds, wheat or corn, RISE diversifies its micro crop selections to promote product sustainability, fostering a growth alternative DannarGarcia says is more environmentally friendly to the planet. “We look at building healthy, sustainable systems that are good for profit, the planet and people,” she said. “We’re not certified organic yet, but we use organic principles in everything we do and plan to gain certification in the next year.” Dannar-Garcia said she became enamored with nontraditional gardening through growing large quantities of heirloom tomatoes in her home garden. As a former teacher, Dannar-Garcia said she finds this educational component to the equation particularly gratifying. “To date, this has been the pinnacle of my farming career,” she said. “Certainly, one of the best ways to secure our food system is to develop a robust local food system, with growers and farmers and hubs and so on. Discussions with Fidelity Bank and other area growers have since set the wheels in motion for what DannarGarcia imagines will ultimately give area residents plenty to feast upon in coming years. The eventual impact the venture could have on the community is almost beyond imagination, she said. Given sufficient buy-in by surrounding communities, she envisions the project becoming something far more than simply another mom-and-pop storefront business. “If everyone in the greater metropolitan area spent 25 percent of their food budget on locally produced food, we would create 28,000 new jobs, with $1 billion in wages and $3 billion in greater economic output,” Dannar-Garcia said. “It’s a compelling argument for local agriculture.” Certainly, the literal weight of the project is but one of the growing challenges of getting the fledgling business off the ground. With typical growing soil weighing more per square foot than an automobile, Dannar-Garcia said the use of a soil blend containing Rooflite, a volcanic-like rock utilized in place of traditional planting soil, enables growers to occupy the space necessary to grow without risk of bringing down the building from extreme weight conditions in the process. “It wouldn’t hold if we used soil,” Dannar-Garcia said. “Our growing medium blend is 70 percent Rooflite, 10 percent sand, and 20 percent compost. We fertilize weekly because this product has almost none of the microscopic organisms soil does. In our weekly fertilizing we also water in our mycorrhiza, which turns the Rooflite blend into a living thing that allows our plants to grow so well.” Such soil saturation is one of the many lessons DannarGarcia said she plans to eventually offer in the community through a docent program in which Fidelity Bank employees will give educational tours. Two Anniversaries to Celebrate From his own personal love of martinis, cigars and live music, Morrie Sheets launched a unique destination location in Wichita that has made a name for itself as one of the area’s premier gathering places for thirsty adults. Mort’s Martini and Cigar Bar is celebrating 26 years in the area this month, delivering the same great customer service and top-notch musical acts in an oasis-type environment that has endeared the establishment to its loyal customer base for more than a quarter century. Meanwhile, Mort’s is celebrating another milestone: the 25th anniversary of general manager and part owner Emma Russell. She and her three long-time managers direct the staff of 23 employees. “They pretty much run the company, not me,” Morrie said. Morrie and company recently surprised Emma with a party and the gift of an all-expense-paid trip to Hawaii for her and husband Jeremiah Johnsen. “I want to thank Emma for 25 years,” Morrie said during a touching tribute. “She does it every day and she does it with a smile. What a blessing she’s been to me and my family, and to all of you.” Twenty-five-years ago, Emma was a recent high school graduate looking for work when she was hired by then-manager Darrin Hackney as the lunch girl. The job put her through college to earn a degree in criminal justice, but she continued to move up the ladder at Mort’s and stayed. “It doesn’t feel like it’s been 25 years,” she said. “I’ve got the best staff and the best customers. This place is awesome because everybody gets to be part of the family — and it’s the family you choose, not the one you have to be stuck with.”

Generations Located where a gas station once owned by Morrie’s grandfather stood, Mort’s was founded by Morrie in 1996 in partnership with family friend Matt Carney, and continues to operate from an 800-square-foot building and adjacent 800-square-foot patio. After selling the bar for a brief spell, Morrie bought it back when the new owner passed away unexpectedly and has retained part ownership since, along with sister-in-law Sharon Sheets and Emma.

Daily specials are a favorite for Mort’s customers, including half-price martinis on Mondays and Bloody Mary deals on Sundays. Currently, Mort’s is in conversation with several groups wanting to open additional locations in other cities, with plans of a new concept coming to Wichita in future months. While the original product line of gasoline pumped at his grandfather’s station is no longer on tap, people still line up to get their fill of spirits and socializing, set to a backdrop of memorable live music acts nightly, including a double dose of concert entertainment Friday and Saturday nights. “We’re thankful to the city of Wichita for embracing us. We have the highest volume per square foot in the state of Kansas, especially in vodka. We support music and the arts and love to see new musicians come through town.” Customer input and involvement have made it easy for the owners to give the people what they want, a concept that has made the bar a welcome haven to its loyal regulars. “I want it to be their bar,” Morrie said. “I’ve put my stamp on it, now it’s up to the girls as to how they want to run it. Some of Wichita’s finest restaurants are giving us the romantic essence of Italy and Spain with the smoothness of Sade. This ambiance is tastefully executed by one of Wichita’s most understated musicians, Roberto Bernardinello. You may have heard his pleasant instrumental guitar set at Chester’s, Bella Luna, Luciano’s or Napoli. The familiar, perfectly executed songs contain hints of groove and no loud surprises. (Except for the moment your mind is blown upon the realization you’ve been listening to live music coming from a real musician in the corner of the restaurant, instead of a thoroughly edited recording coming through the finest of speakers). Rarely does live music complement the night and your conversations perfectly. Rarely can you find a musician who only adds to the atmosphere and ambience in perfect balance. Bernardinello is originally from Milan, Italy. He took his first bass lesson in July of 1991, and then set his sights on Trinity College of Music in London. “Moving to London and earning a scholarship in a prestigious music university, without me having a high school diploma, was the confirmation that anything in life is achievable,” said Bernardinello, “even when it seems impossible. I try to stick to that mantra every day.” When asked why music, he answered, “The only constant feeling was the desire to make a living making music. When I made the decision in 2003, I left Milano, moved to London, and began my musician’s journey.” This journey eventually led Bernardinello to the Wichita area. In 2007 he happily found himself as a music instructor for Butler Community College. “The people, no traffic, cost of living, the space and vibe. There’s a lot of great things here in Wichita,” he says. Bernardinello’s musical collaborations and reach are quite impressive. He’s played with many great international jazz musicians such as Denny Jiosa, a Grammy-nominated producer and sought-after session guitarist; composer Kenny Zarider; and Maurice LoMonaco, a classically influenced singer and songwriter. “One highlight was having the drummer Danny Gottlieb, who’s played with Sting, Pat Metheny, Gil Evans, etc., play on my second album, ‘Geographic National,’ ” he says. Bernardinello’s first album is titled “One.” Bass guitar is Bernardinello’s main instrument, but through the years he has learned upright bass, guitar, percussion, piano and vibraphone, and he is currently studying trumpet and sax. When he’s not instructing at Butler Community College, he’s giving private lessons from his home studio. The musician can also be found making the local dining experience even more memorable. Familiar songs by Sting, Sade, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, and the Eagles, masterfully played in his Spanish-inspired style can be heard weekly, enhancing meals at great restaurants. Aside from his passion for music, Bernardinello is a proud father to his 16-year-old daughter. “The birth of my daughter, Pilar, was the most wonderful experience I’ve had in life,” he says. “I’m blessed to have her.” 60

Wine and Spirits With the Good Life Guy Rosé All Day. Who Would Have Thought? Rosé wine is not just trendy for the 21st century. When the Greeks planted the first grapevines in Provence 2,600 years ago, they were already making rosé. Wine-making techniques in those days were different: The method of macerating red grapes, which gives red wine its color, was unknown, or at least very uncommon. Wine made from red grapes was therefore rosé. In other words, Provence is the oldest wine region in France, and rosé is the oldest known wine!

Saignée – Directly translating to “bleeding,” the saignée (sanyay) method involves bleeding off some juice early in the process (prior to fermentation) from a vat that will be used to make red wine. This juice is then used to produce rosé wine, with color and structure resulting from the limited skin contact at the start of the red wine production. The rest of the juice will continue on to make red wine. Saignée-method rosé wines are typically more complex and fuller-bodied than other styles. Blending – As the name implies, this method involves adding a very small amount of red wine to white wine, resulting in ... pink wine. This practice is commonly used to make rosé champagne (chardonnay + pinot noir or pinot meunier). Blending might also be involved at the end of one of the other production methods described above.

Exports of Provence wines have skyrocketed by nearly 500 percent in the past 15 years. The enthusiasm for rosé has extended beyond the borders of France. Provence exported 60 million bottles in 2020. We love it in the U.S., buying up 40 percent of the total quantity sold abroad. It’s not just Southern France that produces top shelf pink wine – the global wine market is rich with rosé. Every major wine producing country and region is on board; the diversity of offerings is amazing and growing. And the diversity of grapes and production techniques are as well.

There Are Four Ways to Make Rosé Maceration – The most common method of production involves using red grapes to make rosé. The red wine grapes are harvested and crushed to release their juices. The juice and macerated skins rest for a short period of time to allow the grape skins to influence and color the juice. The juice is racked off the must and fermented, usually in stainless tanks. Direct Press – Another common method that uses red grapes to produce rosé wine. The grapes are harvested and pressed to extract the juices from the skins. Unlike the maceration technique, the juice is drained off the skins almost immediately. This quick separation of skin and juice results in a lightercolored pink wine.

Rosé is made from almost every wine grape you can imagine, usually driven by the country and region. A couple of the biggest selling points of rosé is its food affinity and refreshing foil to hot weather. Combine that with an amazing array of dry-tosweet styles and generally moderate cost, and you have a summertime winner. The wait is over for patrons of White Crow Cider Company, who’ve been anticipating the re-opening of the urban cidery in its expansive new 6,500-square-foot taproom and production facility at 1236 E. Waterman St.

A plant shop where you can order martini flights? Yes, please! The new GROW experience at 320 S. Market St. in the Fidelity RISE Car Park is an invigorating space complete with plant walls, neon accents, and a DIY plant bar where you can build your own terrarium. Even better – do it with a friend or a child, as a unique birthday celebration or first date, with drink in hand. At the center of it all is the Botanic cocktail bar and lounge, where bartenders spin specialty drinks, martinis, wine and hand-crafted “Sober-licious” sips. The botanical theme carries through to creative pieces by local artists, and the lounge space is available to rent as a venue for birthday parties, bachelorette parties or showers. The varied ideas flow together to create an encounter as fresh as a daisy. As the visionary behind GROW Giesen Plant Shop, which opened in their new space last month, Heather Giesen says, “How could you not come up with this? … I understand that retail is changing and one must also change with it. So to be ‘just a plant shop’ is not an option. You have to create an experience that people want to come back week after week for.” Wichitans have enthusiastically toasted Giesen’s concept: Tickets for the GROW grand opening event were snatched up in a matter of days. Giesen has no plans to rest on her laurels, though.

“It feels terrifying and fantastic at the same time,” says Denise Gardner who owns the business with her husband, Kenneth. “We are really excited… We can go back to making cider and running a taproom instead of building.” It all began eight years ago when Kenneth’s job took the Gardners to Bristol, England. “Once we got to Bristol, really good cider was everywhere. It was dry, not sweet, craft cider and it was fantastic,” says Denise. “Once we got back home we really missed it and couldn’t find anything like it. We started making it at home just so we could have what we liked, and things quickly grew from there.” White Crow Cider Company has 10 different hard ciders on tap, ranging from dry to sweet, plus one local beer and one local kombucha from Apollo Fermentations. The ciders have descriptive monikers like Blackberry Binger, Hibiscus Lime and Chai Opener, and are crafted with fresh-pressed apple juice from Kansas orchards, supplemented with juice from other states. For the time being, White Crow Cider Company is open only on Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 10 p.m. as they ramp up hiring and training employees, but you can find their cider on tap at restaurants and breweries around town.

“As an innovator,” she say, “I am now working toward many other fun ideas and projects. The growing never stops.” Kids are welcome at GROW and there is a full menu of mocktails for them to enjoy. Safari Express at the Sedgwick County Zoo

Patrons curious to go behind the scenes at the zoo – or simply experience a quick and fun way to travel to the opposite side – will enjoy the Martha C. Buford Safari Express, which held its grand opening last month. The 1.3-mile route forms a big circle, according to Jennica King, director of strategic communication, and is anchored by two stations, one near the giraffes as you first enter the zoo, and the other near the gorillas. Riders travel through a tunnel near the penguin exhibit and cross over to the back side of the zoo. “So you’ll get to see views of the zoo that most people have never seen before,” says King. As the train chugs through the backstage farm pasture, behind conservation buildings and animal habitats, riders will hear recorded messages from zoo keepers sharing details about specific areas. The locomotive pulls into the second station at the Downing Gorilla Forest, and visitors can hop off, or stay on as the route continues behind the elephant habitat. Any chugging, or other track sounds seemingly produced by the two CP Huntington locomotives are actually a clever piece of stagecraft: “It’s a fully electric train; it’s completely silent,” explains King. “We have to actually pipe in train sounds. Not only is the train itself green in color, it’s green in practice.”

Gläs Häus Racing

If you ever wondered what it would feel like to sit behind the wheel of a high-performance vehicle on a professional race track, here’s your chance to find out. Gläs Häus Racing opened last month at 7817 E. 37th Street N., bringing authentic sim racing to beginners and experts alike. “We will have a variety of tracks and cars, from karts to F1 cars,” says co-owner Tevin Manuel. Their eight sim rigs provide an immersive and hyper-realistic racing experience, down to bumps in the actual track and the sensation of wheels losing traction. Gläs Häus features high-end simulators used by pro race car drivers to hone their skills, according to Manuel: “These are the very same rigs, we spared no expense on them; they are the best you can find.” Manuel has partnered with Austin English and his wife, Manu, who also own the restaurant Prost, to bring Gläs Häus Racing to Wichita. They were inspired by their own enthusiasm for racing, “both in the virtual world and physical,” says Manuel. A playful dining experience is in store for Gläs Häus racers, beginning some time in August. Rodrigo and Jessica Ciriaco of the Brazita Bites food truck are bringing their complete menu to this, their first brick-and-mortar venture. “We will continue our food truck menu of Brazilian finger foods, including our chicken coxinhas, pao de queijo (cheese bread), churro bites and more!” says Rodrigo. August 12 marks National Vinyl Record Day, when music lovers all over the United States come together to celebrate their passion for records. Here’s a little information about the history of the holiday, dating back to 2002. We even have a few vinyl recommendations from Wichita record stores, giving you the perfect excuse to indulge in turntable revelry. Music enthusiast Gary Freiberg founded the first nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the cultural influence of vinyl records, as a way to honor the art of collecting, recording and preserving music. He then declared August 12 National Vinyl Record Day to share and celebrate his passion for music. Vinyl records, also known as phonograph records, were first created by Emile Berliner in the 1890s. In 1895, record players went mass market – but radio soon overtook them. Of course, vinyl records have always sold well, but it was during the ’60s and ’70s that they truly reached their peak. During the CD era, vinyl sales plummeted, however, records have made an incredible comeback, which is now referred to by many as the vinyl revival. In honor of National Vinyl Record Day, we celebrate the impact vinyl left on the music industry. Want to celebrate the holiday? Here are six awesome recommendations from two Wichita record stores:

It was officially released in 2011 as a compilation album, and it’s amazing. “Elephant” by The White Stripes (2003) The album begins with one of the most recognizable tracks of all time, “Seven Nation Army.” This song has now morphed into a sports arena anthem known worldwide. Bonus points for the Wichita mention in the lyrics, of course! “The Embarrassment” EP by The Embarrassment (1981) The debut EP from one of two iconic bands to come out of Wichita (the other is Manilla Road). “Aces Wild” by Sadistic Force (2021) Sadistic Force from Austin, Texas, will immediately have you hooked. They play a violent mix of heavy, black, death, and thrash metal. These maniacs are energetic, passionate, and relentlessly rage throughout the entire record. This album is a ripper! “Crystal Logic” by Manilla Road (1983/2021) This album from Wichita’s very own epic heavy metal legends, Manilla Road, is treasured by fans the world over. This prolific band would go on to release over 20 studio albums during the course of their 41-year existence. Sadly, in 2018, the band would end when guitarist/singer/songwriter Mark Shelton tragically passed away of a heart attack after a show in Germany. Check out this album – their third – and see why they are so highly regarded. “Midas” by Midas (2022) Midas brings forth glorious, hard-rocking, in-yourface, heavy metal from Detroit, Michigan. Their dual-guitar harmony attack, in particular, helps to make each song both catchy and memorable. If you enjoy the likes of Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy, and Kiss, you will be sure to love this one.

Start the School Year With a Clean Slate Written by Alexis Evans

With the turn from July to August, parents, students and teachers are beginning to mentally prepare for the bittersweet backto-school transition. This period can feel a bit overwhelming if organization isn’t a skill you naturally possess. It’s a challenge for many, but mastering – or even making attempts at it – can make a huge difference in your school year. Allison Unruh, who works in the elementary education setting and is a mom of four between the ages of 9 to 16, shares some tips that set her and her children up for success each school year: Allison Unruh

Purge everything often! Go through every school item and get rid of everything that has been outgrown or is no longer needed. This includes both clothing and supplies. Space out shopping. Take advantage of sales throughout the year and the summer, so that when August rolls around you aren’t spending large sums of money for back-to-school supplies. Unruh says, “Start early and try to keep a mental list of what your kids will need, and don’t hesitate to pick up as you go.” Create a “drop zone.” This is an area where your kids and teens go at the end of the day to drop off all of their school items: backpacks, shoes, outdoor wear, etc. Unruh recommends creating an area close to the entrance that features a hook for coats and jackets, a seat that doubles as a place to sit on as they take off their shoes and holds the backpack, and a bin or basket underneath to hold their school shoes. Drop zones are a great tool to prevent items from getting lost, and creates an easy-to-follow structure.

Of course, remember that some organization is better than none. If these steps feel overwhelming, start small and get one habit established at a time. Your kids and your future self will be so grateful if you start now.

Here are some more tips to try from some online sources: • Make a morning routine checklist for kids to follow. • Keep a family calendar – whether on the wall or on devices – that everyone can see and add to. • Lay clothes out the night before. • Set up a homework station for each child with all necessary supplies. • Corral art and school supplies in an over-the-door shoe organizer or a rolling cart. • Label everything! Water bottles, jackets, backpacks, binders and so on. • Create a lunch box cabinet or shelf so kids can pack their own lunches. • Create a bin of after-school snacks. • Outline a weekly dinner plan on the fridge or white board. • Spend a day making freezer meals so there’s always a dinner ready.

Make habits fun. Unruh suggests doing a weekly check-in that involves treats. For example, at the end of each school week Unruh and her kids go to happy hour at Sonic, and while they are enjoying their treats, go through each backpack and sort through papers, permission slips and projects, then organize and tackle accordingly so backpacks are ready for Monday before the weekend even begins. Unruh explains, “The important part here is taking the time to check in and relax after a long week, and that your kids feel seen.” 72

Unlike many closet companies, Creative Closet Concepts offers clients a complete package including demo, rough finish, painting and installation. “With our handyman background, adding this complete package was a natural extension, making us a one-stop shop for all your storage needs,” says Phil. The complete package means a storage space is transformed and professionally completed in two to three days; without demo and painting, installation is done in one day. The process is simple: Kaylee meets with homeowners during a free in-home design consultation, listens to their challenges, and designs a solution to make their space work for them. The team then springs into action creating an exceptional experience from start to finish. A dream to own their own business became a reality in 2005 when Phil and Shelley Davis started the journey as entrepreneurs by opening a professional handyman service, The Best Home Guys. But just like many entrepreneurs, it didn’t stop there. Today they have a family of businesses, including Slide Out Shelf Solutions (2018) and Creative Closet Concepts (2022), to help the community with home improvement needs. All companies are located at 2969 W. 13th St. N., where the Davises work to help homeowners address their storage and organization needs. The Best Home Guys offers home maintenance, and started offering slide outs in 2007. As clients asked for this more and more, Phil and Shelley formed an additional company: Slide Out Shelf Solutions. They build custom slide-out shelves for existing kitchen cabinets, pantries and bathroom vanities, eliminating the need for costly remodels. “Our clients often say that this is one of the best home improvements they’ve ever done. We can double – sometimes even triple – the storage space and create easy and pain-free access to all their items,” says Shelley. Professional installation is completed in one day. Just as Slide Out Shelf Solutions evolved, clients began asking Phil and Shelley if they built custom closets. The couple quickly realized that adding a business would further help homeowners maximize the storage potential in their homes. The idea was hatched in March 2022, and by June 2022 Creative Closet Concepts was born to fill that need. The team at Creative Closet Concepts collaborates with homeowners to solve any storage issues causing frustration and disorganization. Lead designer Kaylee Davis, daughter of Phil and Shelley, then custom designs solutions for the homeowners’ storage needs with closets, pantries, home offices, craft rooms, mudrooms, laundry rooms, garages and anywhere else custom storage is needed. These high quality storage solutions are sourced from the United States. The thermally infused laminate used to build each solution is a green material using recycled wood as its core, and completed with a multitude of beautiful finishes. Valuing family built businesses, Shelley and Phil chose a family-run organization in Tennessee to manufacture the storage systems. The team rounds out with a crew of professional installers, and the business is licensed, bonded and insured. 76
