From our Minister, Malcolm Dear friends, Are we ready to ‘hear' … and experience a 'Cultural Commute'?

I am amazed how quickly our twin daughters have progressed in language, reading and writing. Wow…wonderful progress since arriving in Birmingham last September! In their short lives they have had the opportunity to hear numerous differing languages and experience many cultural commutes! Born in Northampton, after a year we were off to Maputo Moçambique. A year later we moved to Maxixe where they attended a Portuguese speaking nursery . . . then further northward again to a Shona speaking area.

So they have had the opportunity to hear English, Tonga, Portuguese, Rhonga, Chitwa and Shona.

It reminds me of Pentecost . . . when the disciples found themselves being able to communicate with those of differing languages and cultures (See Acts 2). Although we may have the opportunity to experience and, if blessed, speak other languages, I sense that we truly ‘hear ‘when we deeply understand what is being communicated. The spoken word is only part of being able to ‘hear’. We use our other senses in that process.

It was special in May to attend the Birmingham Methodist District Synod. I was thrilled to be able to ‘hear’ with everybody else that we intend to develop strong links with the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe. Also to ‘hear’ about ‘Church without Walls’ . . . an initiative to encourage Methodist Churches in the Birmingham District to move forward in ways which again leaves me saying 3

‘Wow’. I am sure we will be hearing more about both initiatives in the coming months.

Revd Trey Hall who presented ‘Church without Walls’ talks of the need for a ‘Cultural Commute’. Put simply . . . what churches offer and provide during worship can be a long distance from the style, experiences, questions and demands which we encounter in the rest of life. Hence a question - is it the church who may need to make a Cultural Commute or is it right to expect those who know little or nothing of ‘church’ to make that Cultural Commute?

Maybe we could reflect on this further as we journey in the months ahead?

The interplay between “Christ” and “Culture(s)” has long interested me. I sense it is a key issue. Recently I was reminded about Paul entering Athens (Acts 17). He found a diversity of cultures and beliefs including those who wished to focus on an “Unknown God.” He chose to make a ‘Cultural Commute’ to get alongside people with the message that had turned his life around . . . and if we let it turn our lives around also.

At ‘Cafe on the Green’ in Stockland Green on a Sunday from 5pm to 7pm we sometimes gather for ‘Roots and Branches’. Recently we were joined by the Zimbabwe Methodist Fellowship who greatly enriched and helped us experience a glimpse of worship in Southern Africa. We are all rooted in Christ (the vine), as branches capable of bearing fruit (John15). Maybe as branches in Christ we should make a choice to treasure and celebrate our cultural heritage? May we have the wisdom to treasure and celebrate our cultural diversity whilst remaining united in Christ . . . May we 4

enable and encourage others to hold to their cultural heritage in Christ.

New vicar’s prayer The new vicar was taking his first service, and determined to make a good impression. The congregation sat spellbound throughout the eloquent sermon and the extended intercessions, which seemed to cover the whole category of human wants. After the service one church member asked another in awe: “Don’t you think our new vicar prays well?

“I most certainly do,” was the answer. “Why that man asked the good Lord for things that our old vicar didn’t even know He had!”

Late for church A little girl, dressed in her Sunday best, was running as fast as she could, trying not to be late for church. As she ran she prayed, "Dear Lord, please don't let me be late! Dear Lord, please don't let me be late!"

While she was running and praying, she tripped on a curb and fell, getting her clothes dirty and tearing her dress. She got up, brushed herself off, and started running again. As she ran she once again began to pray, "Dear Lord, please don't let me be late...But please don't shove me either!"

Silver Wolf We at the 177th Scout Group are very proud that Gerald Peel has been awarded a much deserved Silver Wolf, the highest award a volunteer in the Scout Association can achieve. As you all know Gerald is a real inspiration to all of us and it’s great to know that Birmingham County Scouts also feel the same way.

Below is the citation that was presented to National Headquarters for Gerald’s award. As you can see, it’s pretty impressive.

Gerald has been a member of The Scout Association for all his adult life – more than 54 years in total. He has already been recognised for his dedication to Scouting with Awards for Good Service, he received the Bar to the Silver Acorn in 2011. Since then Gerald’s service has been most exceptional, as his Silver Wolf award testifies. This has been shown in many ways; Gerald has continued to give outstanding service to the 177th Scout Group. Gerald is always available to help all sections of the group, in a hands on role should this be required, he is a good mentor for all his leadership team, and has a great rapport with the young people.

In his role as GSL and District Executive member he has attended every event and meeting and given his business expertise tirelessly in managing the Group and supporting the District. For the District Gerald has been the liaison point for Leadership enquires, in this role he always meets the potential new Leaders, making them feel at home / welcome before successfully placing them in group that have gaps. Gerald has been very supportive to the new groups in the District that have been started with the help of YUF fund Since receiving the Silver Acorn, Gerald has given exceptional support to the County in being the Chairman of the board of Directors for the County’s charitable business Blackwell Adventure. The role of Chairman is voluntary. The Blackwell Adventure business has grown significantly in the last 5 years to an income of now £937,000 returning a profit to Birmingham County Scouts of £45,000 in 2015. The charitable business in the last 12 months has focused on its strategy for the future, however in the last 5 years has focused on its core business and the centre remains a great proposition for Scouts, Girlguides, Schools and businesses.

The highlight in April 2015 was the opportunity to host a visit by HRH the Princess Royal, in her capacity as Patron of Latitude Global 7

Volunteers. The programme included a tour of the centre to witness three local schools taking part in a wide range of activities, plus an opportunity to talk with the Blackwell Adventure staff and the Latitude volunteers.

Princess Anne also had the opportunity to talk with representatives from the Scout County and the Directors of Blackwell Adventure about the work of the centre. A brilliant day all round. Gerald is currently working with county Chairman to develop the Blackwell Adventure Business and its Board of Voluntary Directors to meet the needs of scouting and Girlguiding for the next 10 years.

Gerald is also the Chairman of the County Shop subcommittee, another of Birmingham County’s charitable businesses which provides a service to the Groups in and around Birmingham with Uniforms, badges, training material etc. In 2015 it contributed £5000 to the operations for Birmingham County Scouts. Gerald spends one day per week at the shop supporting the team of volunteers who run the shop.

His continuing enthusiasm remains undiminished despite lengthy service in the Movement.

Date for your diary Saturday July 1st sees a return of Jo Dwyer and her singing pupils who will provide a concert for us with a broad genre of music for a range of different voices.

Those of you who came to the last concert will vouch for the fact that it is an evening of enjoyable entertainment and will raise further funds for the Church organ.

Changes - No, not the weather or even Brexit!!

I wonder how many of you would say that you embrace change in your everyday life. For most of us in the ‘older’ bracket I suspect that we find it difficult. We are not as adventurous as we once were, and maybe some were never adventurous. I am amazed at the number of (mainly younger people) who take off into the unknown, backpacking, sailing, cycling or walking many hundreds of miles. It may be hard sometimes to step out of the comfort zone, but the effort can be very worthwhile, and open up many possibilities which would otherwise not happen.

Now the subject of ‘change’ can open up many discussions and it would be interesting if this challenge is taken up. Think about your attitude to change. What particular change would you like to make in your life, or have already made, whether big or small, life changing or simply something different?

My point in writing this concerns a small change to the norm, which happened a few Sundays ago, when the Young Church led the service.

I arrived for worship to discover that the area had been turned into a ‘café type’ arrangement and immediately my mind was full of a confusion of thoughts: where shall I sit – what is going to happen…

We did encounter this once about six years ago but I was involved in the preparation of the service so knew what was going to happen. It was a very successful experiment but has not been repeated since, until the Young Leaders made this brave decision!

Well it showed me that I must be more positive and be prepared to embrace change – and if we aren’t prepared to do that then our lives will be much less interesting in many ways. This service was excellent! Not only had the leaders worked very hard to create such a meaningful act of worship, it was mainly led by the young people themselves showing a surprising sense of maturity. How many of us would have been prepared to lead a mini Bible study with adults at their age – or even now? So many people came out of the church saying what a good service it was and how much effort had gone into it, by the leaders and the young people.

The weather – well we can’t do much about that. Brexit, well maybe some good may come from it, but I will need a lot of convincing.

Action for Children Sunday - July 9th 2017 As many of you will be aware Action for Children is the children’s charity of the Methodist Church. Founded in 1869 by Thomas Bowman Stephenson, a Methodist Minister who was moved by the plight of children living rough under the arches of Waterloo station in London and set up a home where they could be safe from crime and poverty. Since then a national movement has grown and the spirit of the founder remains the inspiration. AFC take action on behalf of 390,000 children, young people and families across the 10

UK. Their mission is to do what’s right, do what’s needed and do what works for the children.

How heavy is a glass of water?

A psychologist waked round a room whilst teaching stress management to an audience. As she raised a glass of water everyone expected they’d be asked the “half empty or half full” question. Instead with a smile on her face, she inquired: “How heavy is this glass of water?”

Answers called out ranged from 8oz to 20oz She relied, “the absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends upon how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it’s no problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel numb and paralysed. In each case, the weight of the glass hasn’t changed, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.”

She continued, “The stresses and worries of life are like that glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens.

Think about them a bit longer and they begin to hurt. If you think about them all day, you will feel paralysed – incapable of doing anything.”

Remember to put the glass down.

Mid Summer Music Festival As explained in the last magazine, June and July will be particularly musical months.

On June 17th I am once again joined by the marvellous Catherine Mason to present another Organ and Voice concert. I’ll be busy over the next couple of months digging out some well known and unusual organ pieces to hopefully provide another wonderful evening of music. Our Organ should be fully restored by then so this will be a good excuse to ‘flex its muscles’ once more.

On the following Saturday we are visited by The Coleshill Youth and Beginners Brass Bands. I have heard these bands on a number of occasions and they are well worth a listen as they celebrate another year of making music. (I might be a little biased as my niece plays in the Youth Band and the Senior Band too!) You may even get to hear Olivia and I play a little something together too definitely one not to miss.

On July 1st (not the 7th as stated in the last magazine) we are visited for the third or fourth time, I think, by the pupils of Jo Dwyer who will entertain us with a great variety of songs from the shows. Please do your best to support them in their learning and give them the opportunity to sing in front of an audience.

What a feast of music! Please put them in your diaries and we hope to see you at as many as you can make.

Mini Masterclass As you know, one of my activities is writing. Since the Millennium, five of my books have been published commercially, including non-fiction, fiction and biography. Recently, I have put together an illustrated talk entitled “Writing Books and Creativity”. I call it a “MiniMasterclass” because I give my audience the opportunity (no pressure!) to try their hand at writing a paragraph of fiction.

I have found this to be popular and educational for all. The session usually lasts about 1 hour.

Wesley Road – an update At the recent Annual Church Meeting concern was (again!) expressed about the condition of Wesley Road. Similar concern has been recorded on our annual “Schedule A” returns that are sent to the Circuit every October for a number of years. As nothing appears to have happened I hope you will find this update helpful!

Wesley Road is a Private Road. Nobody knows who owns it but we know who definitely does not own it – Erdington Methodist Church, the local residents, Birmingham City Council and Network Rail.

Some five years ago we, as a Church Council, attempted to persuade the City Council that Wesley Road should have been adopted (at their expense) when New Street and the surrounding roads were adopted. We took a traffic and pedestrian movement survey, engaged traffic consultants, argued that the road had street lights and a traffic order and submitted our own historic records.

We even enlisted the support of our local M.P. but everything we submitted was rejected. “Not our problem – it’s a private road and we do not have responsibility for it” said the Council.

At the end of 2016 local Councillor Gareth Moore hosted a residents’ meeting at church and members of the Finance and Property committee also attended. Whilst the main concern of the residents was the parking problem some were also concerned about the road itself.

After two further meetings it was agreed that a questionnaire would be sent to residents asking if: 18

They would be prepared to pay for the road to be made up to an adoptable standard – total estimated cost £180,000 of which we, as a church, would be liable for £80,000 – the Council would then adopt and accept responsibility for the road 2. They would be prepared to form a local management company to ‘repair the road up to an acceptable standard’ and then, as a group of residents, manage the road. This might include the making up cost and the payment of a small annual administration fee. It could also include setting up a privately run ‘pay for parking’ arrangement. The budget cost for this option was never established.

Nothing should be done.

The options were discussed at a Church Council meeting and we agreed that whilst we would support the adoption of Wesley Road in principle we were not prepared to pay £80,000 for it, primarily because we do not have the cash! Nonetheless, and with the prior agreement of Sutton Park Circuit, it was decided that we would seek the advice of the Methodist Church (who own the land the church is built on) and Bob Dauncey and myself visited the legal department in Manchester.

It is fair to say that this visit was unhelpful! We were advised that the matter was a local issue to be resolved by local trustees at Church Council level and whilst the Connexion would be pleased to offer advice they were not able to support us financially.

The residents voted for option 3 above, that is, ‘nothing should be done’.

However, a local landlord decided he would again try to persuade the City Council that the road should have been adopted years ago and, together with a small team of residents, checked the minutes of the full Erdington council and their highways department from about 1890 to 1910. It would appear that, on the balance of probability, Wesley Road should have been adopted during that period. There are definitive minutes confirming the adoption of New Street and, at that time, New Street included the road that we now know as Wesley Road. Sometime between the minutes of the Council to adopt and the work being carried out, the road became known as Wesley Road and was never included in the works. A 60 page document has been prepared showing the circumstantial evidence!

Bob Dauncey and I have met with this landlord and we have agreed that, in line with the Church Council decision, the Church will actively support this new initiative but we will not enter into any form of litigation to support the initiative as this would be, in effect, a blank cheque with no guarantee of a positive outcome.

What do we do in the meantime?

Some say we should repair the road ourselves. You may recall that, before Revd Nicola left the circuit, she persuaded the circuit to spend over ÂŁ5,000 to repair Wesley Road. This repair lasted about two years before it reverted back to its current condition so spending significant amounts of money on temporary repairs does not seem to be cost effective.

The Finance and Property committee have filled in some of the holes – this works for a short time until another set of holes appear, 20

or the filling breaks up; but given the current circumstances this might be the only option!

A further option discussed and agreed by the Church Council, to request the City Council to vary the Traffic Order to prevent parking on Wesley Road between Station Road and the end of the church car park, has been put on the back burner pending the result of the latest initiative.

Now if you have another solution or any ideas at all, please tell any member of the Finance and Property Committee.

The new ‘great night out’?

Doing a jigsaw at home Adult jigsaws have made a comeback, with sales soaring as a growing number of over-50s discover ‘Jomo’ – the ‘joy of missing out’. It seems that more and more people are actively choosing to stay at home and relax, and even do jigsaws. Traditional watercolours and old-fashioned scenes are the most popular.

Adult jigsaws are just one of a number of recent retail trends reflected in the latest Consumer Price Index. Other items include gin (after a 13-year absence) and soya milk (for the first time).

Somewhere and anywhere It was Mental Health Week 8-15th May with the theme of ‘Surviving and Thriving’. We have heard a lot about mental heath recently. First it was Prince Harry followed swiftly by his brother William talking about their trauma resulting from the unexpected death of their mother Princes Dianna. Do you remember where you were when that occurred? I was in a mountain hut on the shoulder of Mont Fort, above Verbier in the Swiss Alps. Because my French was no better than the hut ‘Guardian’s’ English I had to phone home to confirm what I thought he was saying to me.

Following on from the revelations from the House of Windsor there have been the reports about the use of police time and cells to patch over the shortfall in mental health facilities and staff. On top of this there is the steady drip, drip of reports of people, especially children placed in psychiatric accommodation many miles from their families because ‘there are not appropriate beds available in the local area’.

And all the while that this is going on the Government appears to be living in two worlds. Their words tell us that the share of health care money allocated to mental health is rising and that they are aiming for parity of mental health funding with other groups of NHS expenditure and that if they win the next election then everything will change for the better. But between April 2011 and summer 2014 there were huge cuts to mental health services across the NHS including the closure of approximately 2,100, mainly acute Mental Health beds. I think about this at work sometime whilst I am talking to ‘chronic pain’ patients who come to see me in my clinic. At least 10% of the UK population has chronic pain of 22

some sort or another and the evidence suggests that the best treatment results come from multi-professional approach involving medical, physical and psychological therapies, but can we recruit a Clinical Psychologist?

In addition to the government, it has been suggested recently that we are all living in one of two worlds, either a somewhere world or an anywhere world. If we are somewhere people then we need the security of an organisation or a community to enable us to live a fulfilling life. But anywhere people do not need such security for they are more independent and self-sufficient. I heard about this latest division in the human race the other Sunday before going to church. After worship I spent a few minutes walking around with a tray collecting empty cups. I was quite happy engaging in small talk whilst I had the prop of a tray to facilitate an opening to the conversation, but without the tray I would find this very challenging. I wondered which group this put me in.

It is also suggested that somewhere people are more fixed in their views and anywhere people are more tolerant and understanding. I wonder where that leaves us as a church? Superficially we remain and ministers move on. Does that make us somewhere people, and them anywhere people? Probably not, all such divisions are simplifications, like introvert and extrovert.

However this suggestion does raise an interesting point.

Regardless of whether we are somewhere people or anywhere people are we tolerant Christians? Are we open to new ideas from the Holy Spirit, disturbing our status quo with the latest message?

If we are not, then we may not be following Christ’s lead, because he consorted with the enemy, dealt with untouchables and allowed a ‘shady lady’ to massage his feet, all to exemplify his teaching to ‘love your neighbour as you love yourself’ Peter Farley

Brownie Pack Holiday Over the May bank holiday weekend we got to go on our first Division pack holiday.

We stayed at Billberry Hill centre which is right by the Lickey Hills. We had dormitories so we all got to sleep together which was lots of fun and kept us up late! There were lots of other Brownies there too which was fun making new friends.

The theme for the weekend was Disney, so everything we did was linked to a film or character from the theme such as the games, crafts, acting and singing.

We had chores to do each day with our groups such as laying the table for meals, preparing and cooking the food and washing up.

The best part of the weekend was we got to go up the Lickey Hills for the day where we got to play in the playground, go exploring in the woods, have a picnic and go the gift shop to buy little trinkets and slimy slugs!

Pentecost - a day that changed history People call it ‘Whitsun’ because once upon a time it was a day for wearing white and going on church processions. The church, however, calls it ‘Pentecost’ and it’s on June 4th this year. It is a crucial date in the Church calendar – in some ways the birthday of Christianity as we know it.

After the crucifixion the followers of Jesus took to meeting in an ‘upper room’ in Jerusalem, with the doors locked ‘for fear of the Jewish authorities’. It was here that the risen Christ appeared to them several times, as well as on a few occasions in other locations when they ventured out. Eventually He told them that He was ‘going back to the Father’, but that they should stay in the city until they received the spiritual resources to do the job for which He had called them – to take His message to the world. They did as they were told, about 120 men and women, Luke tells us, including the mother of Jesus.

Then it happened, on the Jewish feast of Shavuot, which was 50 days after the Passover. Pentecost was a spiritual experience which transformed their lives. Emboldened, they emerged from the upper room and started preaching on the city streets. They continued to do so even when ordered to stop. What had happened to bring about this transformation? The answer was two words: Holy Spirit. If that sounds very elusive and vague, think of it in its basic meaning in the Greek of the New Testament: Breath – the very source of life itself, the most precious gift of God. At Pentecost the handful of believers were brought to new life because the Holy Spirit of God breathed upon them. The Church was born.

Two thousand people were baptised. Wimps became witnesses!
