You may recognise these as being the ’24 Dispositions’ which form the basis of the Religious Education Syllabus recommended to be taught in all Birmingham schools. You can find more by Googling ‘Birmingham 24 Dispositions’ I was so excited to find these when I was researching prior to leading a Harvest assembly at a local school . . . and whilst preparing for the young peoples' activity for the CGK (Celebrating Gods Kingdom) at Bishop Walsh.

Maybe as congregations we should explore picking up these themes which seem to me to be so central to what we are about.

Like me, I am sure you can think of biblical stories and teaching to underpin these ‘Dispositions’ Perhaps we should have a competition for the most creative!?

May God bless us all as we continue on life's journey exploring the height, depth and breadth of the love of the God whom we worship and who encourages us to explore what is important in life.

Beaver Activities

With the dark nights here we would like to share with you the latest news of what our Beavers have been up to since September.

On Saturday 10th September several Beavers and leaders attended the Birmingham County Fun Day which was part of our celebration of the Beavers 30th Birthday which was held at Blackwell Adventure near Bromsgrove.

After a brief journey by coach we arrived at our event only to find it was raining. After our registration and welcome meeting the Beavers took part in the party zone and craft activities during the morning. Luckily for us it was indoors.

After lunch the rain had stopped and the Beavers went on the tree trek event followed by completing the blind trail in a wooded area.

taken with the Birmingham County Commissioner Mr Andrew Lloyd.

Our Beavers attended with two other Beaver colonies from our district and all the Beavers stated that they had a fantastic day.

The fall and rise of Ghana’s debt The World Bank has guaranteed a high-interest loan to Ghana which is making large profits for speculators, in breach of its own rules. At the same time, public spending in the West African country is being cut by 20%.

This is one of the revelations in a new report that the ‘Jubilee Debt Campaign - Drop the Debt’ has produced with partners in Ghana: The fall and rise of Ghana’s debt: How a new debt trap has been set. It looks at why Ghana's debt has risen back to crisis levels over the last decade, the role the IMF and World Bank have played in fuelling the lending boom, and what can be done to stop history repeating itself.

Significant amounts of Ghana's debt were cancelled a decade ago, following our global campaigning to drop the debt. That debt cancellation has led to real benefits - including large increases in the proportion of children completing primary school and the number of births attended by a skilled health professional.

But the global financial system that keeps generating debt crises has not been changed.

Today, Ghana is in a new crisis. It follows a gradual increase in lending to Ghana off the back of the discovery of oil and high prices for other commodities such as gold. Yet the recent fall in the price of oil, gold and other commodities has had a dramatic impact, 7

with the value of the Ghanaian currency, the cedi, halving against the dollar since 2013.

Now one-third of the government's budget is being spent on external debt payments.

At the moment, all the costs of the crisis are being borne by the people of Ghana through government spending cuts and tax increases, and none by the lenders. Speculators are earning 8%-11% interest every year on their loans to the country, despite knowing Ghana would struggle to repay when the money was lent.

This is unfair. Lenders should carry their share of the cost of irresponsible lending, and of the change in circumstance caused by the fall in commodity prices.

The report also outlines the additional action needed in order to prevent a repeat of Ghana’s crisis, including changes on the part of the government and lenders to ensure that loans are well used, and tax justice to make Ghana less dependent on debt.

The Covenant Service At the start of the new year Methodists make a distinctive resolution.

All are welcome to share in a Covenant Service (this year on 8th January 2017 in this church). You will be welcome, whether you are sharing in a Covenant Service for the first time, have done it annually for many years, or simply want to watch what others do without taking part yourself.

The service is a gift not a demand! And God will give you the grace to do it all. You are not alone!

The Covenant Service, often celebrated on the first Sunday of the year, is at the heart of Methodists' devotion and discipleship, and their dedication in working for social justice. In the service the Church joyfully celebrates God's gracious offer to Israel that "I will be their God and they shall be my people".

This offer is then extended beyond Israel to all women and men in Jesus Christ, who also provides the supreme example of what it is to live in such a relationship with God. The New Testament suggests that as we join the group of those seeking to follow the way of Jesus, we respond to God's challenge with him and begin to share his relationship with God as Father.

Armageddon The news in the last few weeks has been full of Clinton, Trump and ISIL, not necessarily in that order. But one item in particular caught my eye and that was the report that the Peshmerga had driven ISIL from the town of Dabiq without a fight. This was significant because ISIL had vowed to fight to the end to defend this town in northwest Syria, population just over 3,000. Why, you may ask? What is it about this little town that is so significant?

Apparently it was the site of a battle when the Ottoman Empire defeated the Sultanate of Mamluk. But, even more significantly, in the Islamic tradition this is one of two possible locations for a final battle between Christianity and Islam that would signal Armageddon, the beginning of the end.

My theology, as some of you will know, is rather liberal, but with regard to Armageddon it is almost non-existent. Wikipedia tells me that Har-Magedon is the symbol of every battle in which, when the need is greatest and the believers are oppressed, the Lord will come and reveal his power. So maybe it is at this point that my theology of love and hope and promise comes into its own, rather 11

than in the killing and mayhem of battle, that is usually associated with Armageddon.

I suspect that the people of Aberfan could be excused for briefly believing that Armageddon had started on the 21st October 1966.

The coal spoil heap, located above their town, underwent a thixotropic change and flowed down the hill burying 116 children and 28 adults, mainly in the local school, in some places to a depth of 40 feet.

Coalmine waste had been tipped on the sandstone ridge above Aberfan for 50 years. In the process several springs, which flowed out had been covered. In 1964 a local Councillor warned that if the tip were to move it would engulf the school. Then in 1965 the headmistress presented a petition from the parents at the Pantglas School to the local borough council. Unfortunately neither of these 12

resulted in any action. To be fair there had been some change to the tipping practices after a minor movement within the tip in 1963.

In the 1960s, with increasing competition from oil, the National Coal Board was contracting rapidly, down from 207 million tons of coal in 1956 to 133 million tons by 1971. Coincidentally in 1966 the NCB was given extra powers to explore for oil! Presumably as a result of this financial pressure anyone who might have understood the enormous risk that these spoil heaps represented was very firmly concentrated below ground rather then above.

However this is the season of Advent, a time of love and hope and promise: a time of new beginnings. The time when we believe that the Lord came not in power but in the humility of a baby and the degradation and despair of an unmarried mother in a deeply conservative community. God became man and experienced the world like each one of us. This is very important because now we can each say, wherever I am, however desperate I feel he has been there before me.

But to return to Aberfan, after all the mayhem and chaos, damage and despair, all the procrastination and avoidance of responsibility some good did finally come; the spoil heaps were removed, under the then newly enacted Health and Safety legislation.

As a final point, in the local Aberfan School at the end of term October 2016 the children sang the hymn that they would have sung on that day in 1966 had fate not intervened – ‘All things bright and beautiful’. Now that is a message about love and hope and promise.

Rev Stephen Froggatt As part of the Stationing procedure, Sutton Park Circuit were given the name of Rev Stephen Froggatt as a potential Presbyter to join our Circuit.

After the visit on 12th November the Invitation Committee felt it right to offer Stephen the appointment for Blackwood and Four Oaks with effect from September 2017. We are delighted to announce that Stephen has accepted.

The family reiterated their thanks for the welcome and hospitality shown during the visit and Kathleen and Hannah send special thanks to all those who made the day enjoyable and memorable.

So as we so as we prepare to welcome Stephen, Kathleen and Hannah let us not forget to include them in our prayers, especially for a school place for Hannah, as they look forward to becoming part of Sutton Park Circuit.

Unveiling of War Memorial Windows.

An Impressive Ceremony.

Two very beautiful stained glass windows have been placed in the chancel of our Erdington Church in recognition of the devotion of the men of the Church who served in the war, and in memory of eight of them - whose names are recorded on the window - who made the supreme sacrifice. The figure in the window on the left of the chancel is that of 'Faith' typifying faith in the justice of the cause in which our men fought, while the figure in the right-hand window represents 'Fortitude' an accompanying virtue that sustained our heroes through all the trying conditions and horrors of the long campaign. In the upper part of the windows the heads of these two figures are angel forms, bearing suitable emblems of the Christian Faith and imparting a significance to the spiritual nature of these victorious qualities.

In the lower panels of the designs are 'Charity' and 'Steadfastness', the children around the one figure recalling to our remembrance the little ones of devastated Belgium, while in the hand of the other is the Lamp of Hope, an essential characteristic of the spirit in which the Memorial is erected.

The inscription reads thus: 'In affectionate memory of those members of this congregation who fell in the War 1914-1918, and in gratitude to God for those who returned after serving, these two windows are dedicated.'

A very large congregation assembled for the unveiling and dedicatory service on Saturday afternoon May 21st. The Rev. Percy J. Gould conducted the service throughout and those who took part were Major John Lees J.P. and the Revs. Robert Bond, Harold H. Burdess BA. BD. and William A. Moore. Impressive music, appropriate to the occasion was beautifully rendered by a large choir under the direction of Mr. Donald Rutter. The service opened with the introit, 'Crossing the Bar', followed by the hymn 'O God our help in ages past'. Scripture sentences were then read by the Rev. H. H. Burdess and after the solo 'Beyond the Dawn' by Mr Tom Varley, the Rev. W. A. Moore led the congregation in prayer.

The Unveiling Ceremony followed.

Addressing the congregation, Major Lees said: "We are gathered this afternoon to pay our tribute of love and respect to those men of this Church and congregation who, at the call of duty, left everything that was dear behind them except honour and went forth to fight for truth, for freedom and for right.

After four years of awful war and after nearly three years of socalled peace, these men still live in your affections. Eight of them never returned. As they left home they held in their hands three priceless gifts of the gods - youth, happiness and ambition.

Yet when they reached the far-flung battle-line, these brave men, whose memory you honour to-day, cast those gifts down as if they were common dice. They cast the dice, but Death had loaded them.

We come together just now in the Church they loved so well some with aching hearts all of us with proud ones, to thank God not only for the inspiration of those lives, but for the inspiration also of those noble sacrifices. When the shock of battle came, those eight brethren chose rather to suffer the most, than to win life by weakness.

I would that more worthy lips than mine could pay a more fitting tribute to your noble dead; yet as one who had the honour of sharing with them some of the varied experiences of the trenches and of the battle-fields, I count it a great privilege to be allowed to add my own humble tribute to their memory. We do not forget that these men were citizen soldiers, brought up to hate war, but when the crisis came they fought like veterans, displaying a cheerfulness amidst hardships and an unselfishness which was the wonder of other nations. They gave their 'utmost for the highest'. Their story is not graven only on small wooden crosses, but it lives on, woven into the fabric of other men's lives. Today they lie at peace 'in some corner of a foreign field that is for ever England.' Theirs is the grandest of all sepulchres - a home in the hearts of their fellow men.

Some died with the shout of victory ringing in their ears. Others fell in the dark days, which preceded the victorious dawn. These were the men who helped to make ultimate victory possible. These were the men who, no matter how badly things were going in their sector of the line, never lost sight of their ideals, never lost faith in 20

the justice of their country's cause. Surely it may be rightly said of them that; 'They never turned their backs, but marched breast forward, Never doubted clouds would break, Never dreamed, though right were worsted, wrong would triumph, Held we fall to rise, and baffled to fight better sleep to wake.'

One by one they pass in review before us now. Surely they have a message for the young people present this afternoon, and particularly for those of us who were once their comrades in arms, and is it not this?

'Carry on Do not mourn! As we tried to be faithful in death to our High Command so you must strive to be faithful in life to Christ, the Captain of your Salvation.' As we tried to be faithful to the Law of Sacrifice, so we plead with you to strive after those ideals for which we died, no matter how great the cost. As we tried to be faithful to the ideals of Chivalry, so we beg you to work more for the good and happiness of others, and less for self '.

What shall be our answer? As we salute them let us look them in the face and say, God helping us, we will carry on; and these Memorial Windows shall be a token of our pledge."

As Union Jacks veiling the windows fell to the ground the Last Post sounded out. Then followed hymn 'For all the saints who from their labours rest', after which the Rev. Robert Bond paid a beautiful tribute to the memory of those who had fallen, and to the service they had rendered to mankind not less to their country.

He well voiced our feelings of gratitude that so many belonging to the Church had returned, and his impressive words respecting those who had not returned. We will remember them! We will remember them! found an echo in every heart.

After the anthem 'The souls of the righteous are in the hands of God', the service, which had become more and more impressive as it proceeded, closed with the hymn of hope and triumph 'These things shall be'.

Methodist Women in Britain The next meeting of Birmingham District MWiB is on Saturday December 3rd at Four Oaks Methodist Church where the day will be led by Rev. Hannah Bucke.

The first session will be at 11.00 am with tea/coffee served prior to this. We shall end with tea and cakes around 3.00 pm. Drinks provided at lunch time but participants will need to bring their own packed lunch.

The theme of the day is “Moving into the Neighbourhood” so a meeting of interest to anyone who wants God’s Kingdom to grow, not by expecting people to come into the church but by moving into their localities, building relationships and showing God’s Kingdom in various ways.

Rev Hannah Bucke is a locally deployed Methodist Presbyter stationed to the Southend and Leigh Circuit in a pioneering appointment. Beginning her ministry to Southend town centre in 2013 as a probationer, Hannah had no church building or congregation but instead a busy town on the Thames Estuary with a shopping centre and all the attractions you would expect to find at a British seaside.

Starting from scratch and with a blank sheet, Hannah's town centre presence has evolved into a number of projects, including 'Iconson-Sea', a creative collective seeking to engage people with the Gospel through art and performance in the town centre, and a growing chaplaincy to 'Adventure Island', the theme park on Southend Seafront.

More Beaver News Following the cancellation of the Tame Valley Beaver/Cubs District Athletics in June due to severe flooding which took place at and around the Alexander Stadium the rearranged event took place on Wednesday 5th October under the floodlights which all participants really enjoyed.

The 177th Beavers yet again won the District Shield and was presented with the trophy by Stephen Ball who is a Great Britain European gold medalist in the 1000 metres in Kayaking.

Well done to all the team from the 177th Beavers.

The Challenges of Christmas Christmas is a great time of year, but it’s not without its challenges!

One household had 250,000 Christmas lights, but could not boil a kettle for fear of blowing the system!

The challenge of over-indulging We all remember the episode of the Vicar of Dibley, where she had to consume four Christmas dinners! Christmas is a time when we usually eat and drink far too much, the average person gaining 6 pounds in weight. But Christmas is not simply about gaining weight, but losing what weighs us down. ‘Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.’ (1 Peter 5:7). Whatever your concerns or worries this Christmas, bring them to God. The challenge of overspending In the rush to buy Christmas cards, a woman bought a pack of 50 identical cards. Without reading the verse, she hastily signed and sent them off, but for one. A few days later she read the message: ‘This card is just to say a little gift is on the way.’ Christmas is not about getting into debt, but God getting us out of debt. He spent exactly what was needed on the first Christmas night: ‘You are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.’ (Matthew 1:21).

The challenge of over too quickly Christmas doesn’t last very long, yet the effect of the first Christmas is long-lasting. ‘For God so loved the world that He gave 26

His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.’ (John 3:16). Jesus has come to bring us life in all its fullness, both for now and all eternity.

A Child’s Christmas in Wales DylanThomas was born in Swansea and although he travelled widely, Wales was the only place where he truly wanted to be. A Child’s Christmas in Wales, written in Thomas’s typically lyrical way, has a distinct nostalgic flavour. The phraseology, imagery and delightful choice of words are sheer joy to read. On reading the poem, the more elderly among us may find childhood memories spring to mind. Furthermore, it also has the ability to foster the imagination of children.

The first two paragraphs One Christmas was so much like another, in those years around the sea-town corner now and out of all sound except the distant speaking of the voices I sometimes hear a moment before sleep, that I can never remember whether it snowed for six days and six nights when I was twelve or whether it snowed for twelve days and twelve nights when I was six.

All the Christmases roll down toward the two-tongued sea, like a cold and headlong moon bundling down the sky that was our street; and they stop at the rim of the ice-edged fish-freezing waves, and I plunge my hands in the snow and bring out whatever I can find. In goes my hand into that wool-white bell-tongued ball of holidays resting at the rim of the carol-singing sea, and out come Mrs. Prothero and the firemen.

Trams I recently did something that I have not done since 4th July 1953 – 63 years ago; I have ridden on a Birmingham tram. Actually I rode from the station nearest to Snow Hill back to Grand Central.

Unfortunately there is no doorway through from the tram station into the Snow Hill rail station, so you have to walk the long way round! The new trams have all mod cons; display screens for next stop, automatic doors and heavy-duty carpet seats. But even with all of the updating there is still a conductor.

All of this is a far cry from the number two tram that I rode from Salford Stadium through to Chester Road, which took me to school and back every day with a trip to and from the top of Gravelly Hill for lunch at my grandma’s. These trams were open front and back upstairs and had seat backs that flopped over when the tram reversed for the return journey. One of our pranks was, at the terminus at Wylde Green, run down the length of the upstairs swinging the backs as we ran, and then off before the conductor shouted. Easy because there were two staircases, one at each end.

The early trams were on the longest narrow gauge service in the country, 80 miles. Presumably the trams in London were on a wider gauge.

I write this sitting in Pret on Grand Central Station watching the world go by, including the odd pigeon. This place has also changed since 1953, but still incredibly exciting portending travel, exotic locations and adventure. Then it was a noisy place full of steam and smoke. But it was also the terminus of the 144 bus that took us away for magical weekends to Holt Heath, where the 29

family had the then equivalence of a mobile home, based around a first world war Nissen hut.

Many things change as time passes but some things remain constant.

On a recent Sunday Godfrey Higgins preached about coming and going. Come to me for rest and strength and then go out and tell the word about what you have been given. We sit in a refurbished church with new chairs, a wonderful window and overhead projection. But the message is the same, ‘Come to me all you who are heavy laden and I will give you rest’ – ‘Go forth and tell, God’s saving news to all the nations take’. He was an inspiration to us all delivering the message, which is very difficult to put into practice.
