Minister’s Letter Dear friends I am so much looking forward to meeting and getting to know people in and around Erdington. Toward the end of last term our twins (Chipo and Luyando) spent a couple of days at their new school - St Mary and St John Catholic. As I write we are surrounded by a growing pile of cardboard boxes and are in the throws of packing and getting ready to move.

I am reminded of some lyrics from ‘ Moses I know you're the man’ (Singing the Faith 473) which I find particularly apt for the last few years of our family life!

‘Don't get too set in your ways,’ the Lord said…

‘Each step is only a phase,’ the Lord said.…. ’You will move easier if you're travelling light,……

So if you want to be with me all your days keep up the moving and travelling on.…’ …So every day, we're on our way, for we're a travelling, wandering race, we're the People of God. I have never been very good at ‘travelling light!… and hence know a little of the truth of the hymn! Gina, Chipo, Luyando and I treasure that we will be settled in the Sutton Park Circuit for the coming years. The past few years have certainly been full of travelling bringing a mixture of expectation and action, tinged with some disappointments since we set off for Mozambique at the end of 2012. …a bit like being on roller coaster!

We have been reminded of the importance of ‘travelling light’ by failing to do so!… Having arrived in Maputo to work with Igreja Metodista Wesleyana em Moçambique we had the adventure of getting a container out of the port. At the last moment we learned we needed a police escort. This normally means booking a week in advance… Thankfully an agent managed to secure the services of a policeman and the container arrived in the evening at the rented accommodation and unloaded… all apart from our Fiat Multipla car. How do you get a car out of a container which is on the back of a lorry! But that's another story!

Twelve months later it was decided we should move to work with Igreja Metodista Unida em Moçambique in Maxixe. Hiring a box van in the city was not too much of a problem and accompanied by two colleagues we set of on the 500km trip northward. The old Fiat laden to the gunwales! Gina was able to work at the United Methodist hospital and explore setting up a mobile clinic.

But our moves were not over! The end of 2014 saw us transferring to Chimoio near the Zimbabwe border. Only problem… finding transport. Nobody was happy to take their vehicle through a recent war zone with all the attendant poor roads and security issues. I will never forget following the old lorry with defective lights, probably best described as a dump truck… laden with our belongings covered with a thin plastic tarpaulin that was not fit for purpose. We made the 700km in the early hours, having been stopped at many police road blocks…Thankfully only one heavy downpour of rain.

No time to get too set in our ways! Having left the UK shores with the intention of a long ‘phase’ in Moçambique, within less than a 4

year we made the difficult decision that we should return to the UK. God is good and in that time I worked with the Circuit steward to build a manse and sink a borehole. It was good to use the bath and sleep one night there before leaving Moçambique.

Over the past year I have again been reminded of the benefits of ‘travelling light’. Commuting from Northampton to Croydon, where the Methodist Church stationed me, has been much easier when I have thought carefully what I need to take with me. On journeys, excess baggage of any kind is so tiring! At the same time, not to have what we need can be stressful.

I am excited that we will be journeying and discovering together what God wants to give us for the journey. I am excited that I am becoming part of Sutton Park Circuit not least as it comes together on 25th September to launch the new Vision Statement ‘Living and Growing God’s Kingdom’. This seems to me to reflect Matthew 6 v33 which for me has long been a specially treasured verse. May God bless us in our future journey together…and may God bless Revd Paul and Revd Alex as they move to their new home and station.

Statement by the 2016 Methodist Conference The 2016 Annual Conference of the Methodist Church passed a resolution containing the following text: The United Kingdom, as a result of the referendum on 23 June 2016, has voted to leave the European Union. In this time of very significant change and uncertainty there is a need for leadership which seeks the common good and encourages people to work together, to respect one another and to uphold the dignity of all.

The Methodist Conference believes that the British Isles are enriched by diversity and celebrates the contribution made by those who have come from other parts of the world.

The Christian tradition calls for respect, tolerance, love of neighbour and hospitality to the stranger. All bear the responsibility of speaking and acting for healing, reconciliation, and mutual respect.

The Methodist Conference abhors and deeply regrets those actions and words which incite hatred and lead to the victimisation of groups within society and notes with concern that such actions and words have been normalised in recent public discourse. Believing that racism is a denial of the gospel and that to stay silent when others are abused is to collude with those who seek to promote hatred and division, the Methodist Conference calls:

discrimination for a political debate which neither demonises any nor leaves the vulnerable (the foreigner, the immigrant and refugee) in danger of victimisation. on political leaders to work together for the good of the whole community putting the needs of the nation before party politics. on all those in positions of power and authority to hear the voices of those who have been marginalised and alienated and to respond to them in ways which offer real hope for the future.

Queen Elizabeth's 90th birthday On Friday 10th June the Rainbows joined with the Brownies to celebrate the Queens 90th birthday.

We first played ‘Queen Elizabeth said’ ...... In the rainbow room.

We split into groups and went into the brownie room to decorate cakes. We decorated the cakes with rice paper photos of the Queen, red, blue and white sweets. We had a quiz on the royal family then a drink and cake. Some of us liked the cakes we had iced and some of us didn't. After we read "the Queens knickers" and then played a game based on the book.

To end we all received our Queens 90th birthday badges, sang our end of session songs and went home

Church Notices that didn’t quite make it . . .

A talk on drugs will be given at the next Mothers’ Union meeting.

This will be followed by a Bring and Buy Sale.

A sudden gust of wind took all who were at the ceremony by surprise. Hats were blown off and copies of the vicar’s speech and other rubbish were scattered over the site.

The Rector is on holiday this month. Local clergy will be celebrating with us all the Sundays that he is away.

Don’t miss the Young Wives’ Victorian evening next month. It will be a fun night and some of the women will wear clothes.

Brownies outing to Birmingham Nature Centre On Saturday 18th of June our brownie pack went to the Birmingham Nature Centre, we saw otters, barn owls, golden headed monkeys, meerkats, guinea pigs, porcupines, tortoise, and two sloths. We watched the keeper feed the otters. We were all doing our friend to animal badges so as we went around the animals we drew them and wrote about them to make a poster when we were back at church.

Next we had lunch and then went to Cannon Hill Park. We played on the zip line, in the play ground and walked around the lake.

We returned to church for our sleepover. We had chicken nuggets or sausage and chips for tea. We worked on our badge, played games, practised holding our new Brownie flag, bead craftwork, and dance routines.

We set our beds up for the night and then had a midnight feast, we played being loud before going to sleep.

The next morning after breakfast we got dressed and packed our bags. We did some more Bead Craft for Father's Day gifts. Then we went into church before going home.

Brownies new flag After our Brownie sleepover on Sunday 19th of June, from 10.30 till 11.30 it was our Family Church Parade. It was a special day because the brownies had a new flag and it was to be blessed in church in front of the congregation.

The Brownies' old flag was brown and gold with a pixie man on it.

We had used this flag for over 30 years. Chrystal, Evie-Mae and Maisie carried our old flag into church.

During the service our new flag was blessed. It is mainly yellow with the modern logos on it. All the uniformed sections shared money donated by the buffs of Brinsley Sheridan and this is how we bought our new flag.

Eve, Lacey and Alyssa carried our new flag out of church.

We had all practised carrying the flag during our sleep over.

Happy Birthday Beavers and Cubs As some of you will know, Beavers and Cubs have big birthdays this year ( for those of you who don't know we are 30 and 100 respectively). To celebrate 60 Beavers and Cubs from the 177th Birmingham, 31st Sutton Coldfield and 320th Birmingham went to Cadbury World for the day, then came back for a sleepover at church. We ate chocolate until it was coming out of our ears, learnt about how it was made, met Freddo Frog and had great fun.

What better way to celebrate a birthday?

Memories of Jean Jean Harris (formerly Bowen) 15th March 1925 - 27th July 2016 - Age 91 How do you describe or talk about Jean in a few words? The answer is you can’t. She was one of a kind.

Jean was a good and intelligent Durham City lass. Good because she was born on a Sunday - intelligent because she didn’t even try to get into the Diplomatic Service! She had a mind of her own – good on her.

Jean’s Dad, Frank Bowen, and my mother Elizabeth (Betty) Bowen, were respectively older brother and younger sister. Father Frank (family father, not church Father) was a local preacher for very many years (as it happened, so was my Dad).

Jean’s family moved to Birmingham in 1937, when she was 12 years old. This followed the collapse of the Bowen family bakery and shop business in the Great Depression of the 1930s.

They lived in Hansons Bridge Road for a while, and Woodlands Farm Road for many years. Finally they lived in Ewell Road after she was married in 1958 to (another) Frank - Frank Harris, who some may remember.

Back to the early days. Jean’s school in Birmingham was Aston Commercial School. In 1939 the school was evacuated to Cinderford in the Forest of Dean. After the best part of a year 11

there, they returned to Birmingham, where she had her last school year, leaving at the then normal age of 14.

Jean was always good at ‘sums’. So she naturally found work in accounts departments of several factories. These included Wright’s Ropes at Bordesley, M&B at Cape Hill, and Moulded Products (which many know as Hardy Spicer) on Chester Road.

Jean worked long before calculators and machines - she became a very effective calculator herself! So she always checked a column of figures - can’t trust these new fangled gadgets!

Now to the church. Erdington Methodist Church has always been central to Jean’s life. It gave her many very good friends – thank you for your good wishes card recently. She was a member for 79 years. Like her Dad, she got involved in the day-to-day running for much of that time.

Until fairly recently, it seemed to me that nothing worth knowing happened here without Jean knowing it all - what it was, what was behind it, who was involved – everything. Further, her memory was so good for a long time, and people came to ask her years later what happened.

From the early 1950s Jean was Secretary to the Trustees. She continued in that post until after the very busy time of building this lovely building 40 years ago, along with the amalgamation of the churches. In all, she saw some 25 years of service in that capacity.

Then there followed a similar time period helping with the Play Group (School) in the church. She loved it when former young pupils, now mothers, came to speak to her - happy days.

I’m sure that your donations today in Jean’s memory will be a Godsend for today’s Junior Church - thank you.

I remember Jean’s mother (Jenny Bowen) who never lost one iota of her ‘North Country’ accent. Jean’s accent wasn’t like that, but she still regarded herself as a real Durham girl.

Jean led a remarkable life - on her own since husband Frank died in 1988. She gave a helping hand to many along the way. She played a very full part in your very active church while she was able to. She had to make sure that things were done right, you know!

I might add that I’m very impressed with how good and effective your Church grapevine is – word of Jean’s passing was known by all in the ‘blink of an eye’! – or so it seemed.

More recently, her mobility was increasingly impaired, so her attendance waned. But her thoughts were often with you all. She always treasured this lovely place – perhaps the main focus of her life.

My family, including my sons Andrew, Paul and Daniel, with their families, and Jean’s other second cousin Frances, who travelled here today from Hampshire, join me in thanking Jean for a long life well lived.

2016 Season of Invitation Following on from the success of last year we will again be participating in the Season of Invitation.

There are 5 Sundays of importance• Back to Church Sunday – 18th September • Harvest Festival-16th October • Remembrance Day-13th November • Christingle Service- 27th November • Our Carol service on 18th December.

We have invitation cards for each event, a children’s invitation card that can be used for any of the services, and a calendar card to note any important information. All of these cards will be available on the door a couple of weeks before the appropriate Sunday. Please keep your eyes on the notice board in the corridor as publicity will displayed for you to read. If you have any queries please speak to me.

Transport to CGK at Bishop Walsh School (25th Sep) To enable those folk without cars to get to this important Circuit Service, free coach transport has been arranged by the circuit. One coach will leave Witton Methodist Church promptly at 09:45 calling at Nechells Methodist Church and Erdington Methodist Church loading in Osborne Road at 10:20. This will have only limited room on arrival at Erdington. A second coach will start from Stockland Green promptly at 10:10 and also proceed to Osborne Road for 10:20 to accommodate those unable to board the coach starting at Witton. Both coaches will return from Bishop Walsh School approximately an hour after the end of the service to enable for fellowship and coffee.

Circuit CELEBRATING GOD’S KINGDOM 25th September 11.00 am-2.00 pm at Bishop Walsh School, Wylde Green Road, B76 1QT. Drinks provided, but bring packed lunch.

Help required - To show people to their seats – assist with Communion – help with collection – work with the Children’s Groups.

Richard Jeffries - well known in the area for his work among choirs - will be conducting a special choir. Open to all ages the choir will rehearse on Mondays 5th, 12th & 19th September at 7.30 pm at Four Oaks Methodist Church.

Jean Harris - more memories Just after the Second World War my brother, like his fellow evacuees, returned home and as he had been attending a Methodist Sunday School was eager to find one locally. He found Station Road Methodist Church, Erdington, was still running a Sunday School. The following Sunday afternoon he took me (his little sister) with him to Station Road. I was introduced to the teachers, 'Auntie Doris' and 'Auntie Jean', yes this was my first meeting with Jean Harris and Doris Metcalf.

Towards the end of the 40's my parents along with several others from Station Road went to Tyburn to restart the Sunday School taking my brother and me with them. Though I continued to see Jean at circuit events it was not until Tyburn closed, in the early 60s, and I returned to Station Road that our friendship began.

Jean was still working in the Sunday School, knew all the children by name and though she and Frank were never blessed with children of their own, she was always willing to baby sit when asked.

When the Sutton Park Circuit Superintendent Minister was appointed to Station Road and needed a secretary it was Jean who stepped up for the job.

In those days minutes of meetings were written by hand in a book, so when we were researching the history of the Methodist Church in Station Road for the Silver Jubilee, Jean thought it hilarious that we had to have a letter from the minister giving us permission before the library would give us access to books she had written.

What fun we had when reading them, it was difficult to stifle our laughter in that quiet room at the top of the spiral stairs in the old library. Jean not only helped me research the book, but as I scribbled the story down she took each sheet and typed it out into a legible script for Nick to turn into the book 'Silver Jubilee' 1972-1997.

Jean also answered the call when Arthur (my husband) became Show Secretary for the Birmingham and District Carnation Society and needed a typist to type the details on the cards, attending shows to put the winner's name on each card as soon as the judges completed each section. She continued to help the society with this work for many years long after Arthur's death.

Arthur was letting steward for the church but it was Jean who bought the diary and divided each page into three parts - morning, afternoon and evening, filled in all the regular meetings and keeping him in order as only Jean could!

At the time when we were discussing what we needed to do in our new building for the local community, Jean said that we needed a play school. She encouraged me to help and I remember being sent to Osborne Infant School to see what furniture would be best for such a group. For many years Jean continued working with the group which of course became the Pre-School. She was the treasurer too for sometime.

If any of us wanted an address for a former member or minister of Erdington, Jean could be relied on to provide the answer as she had a phenomenal memory for such information. Indeed the last time I visited her in St. Anthony's she delighted in informing the staff that I was a teacher (forgetting that I retired almost 25years ago) and then correctly quoted my full address. Not bad for a 91 year old.

Jean served her Lord throughout her live and now has the peace which only He can give.

Everyone Erdington On Thursday 8th September at 6.00 pm with people from different ethnic communities, political parties and people of different faiths and none, with people in general from the community of Erdington we are holding a community solidarity event.

Just for a few minutes we will join hands and stand side by side along the High Street and Sutton New Road, to show that we celebrate the rich diversity to be found in Erdington and to give a positive loving response to the threat of divisive politics and hate crime, especially since the EU Referendum. Basically I think it would be really good for us all to big up Erdington as much as we can!

We will gather at Six Ways Baptist Church (on Wood End Road, B24 8AD) at 6.00 pm and then move to line the pavement just for a few minutes. I hope to have coverage of what we are doing on local media.

Demagoguery The year, so far, has demonstrated how much those who govern or seek to govern appear to have slipped into a strange half world. A world where spin has replaced information, where lies are propounded as truths and it really doesn’t matter what you say as long as you create that impression that you know best and people should believe you because of that.

First we had the Referendum where the constant cry was ‘give us the facts’. But from where I stand there were only three facts.

Leaving the EU will allow us to: 1.

negotiate our own immigration policy negotiate our own trade policy negotiate our relationship to the European Court of Human Rights

Everything else was opinion from one expert or another. Given that these are three of corner stones upon which the European Union is built I suspect that when the final deal is announce the compromises that will been made in reaching the least worst option outcome will be sufficient for everyone to claim that they have been sold down the river.

Then there is the US election campaign with the battle being between the two least worst options. Hilary Clinton is not trusted partly, I suspect, because she has been around so long, been involved with so much and inevitably some of her previous decisions have some back to bite her. A bit like Mrs May needing to check on the Chinese involvement in the nuclear power station.

On the other hand the Trump campaign has been built on easy 23

scapegoats for the disaffected masses, China for the lost jobs, immigration for the lost security and Mrs Clinton for everything else. All with no thought for how things might be improved if and when the ultimate office is achieved. On reflection it sounds a bit like the referendum campaign. Half-truths peddled, as fact and the demagoguery of believe me because I know best and am the only person who can solve your problems.

I heard a sad, slightly wistful, piece about the decision to leave the EU by Mary Beard on the radio that other day, in which she presented her analysis of where it all went wrong. Those who have profited from the EU’s culture, science and finance have not worked hard enough at persuading everyone else about its merits.

This would always have been a hard sell for many, but particularly to the man in East Anglia or on Tyneside who has lost his job.

But there was worse in this vein. After the Referendum there was much analysis of how and why people voted as they did. One of the interviewed groups included some who had never voted before. Their comment was that when they had thought about voting in the past they had decided that it was all too complicated.

With the referendum it was simple either a tick for yes or a tick for no, maybe with little real understanding of the consequences. But all through the campaign I had heard some pundits/demagogues saying, in the end people will vote with their hearts and ignore their head (the facts).

However, what worried me is that after generations of universal suffrage there are still some people who regard voting as too difficult. Those of us who believe in the necessity of voting, even when we know that our vote will not influence the result one way 24

or another, have not spent enough time informing or persuading people of the value of the democratic process. Why have we been silent whilst allowing our society to evolve in a way, which appear to be content with so many having so little understanding of the value of the democratic process? Sounds a little like Mary Beard and the EU referendum. Is being silent being complicit?

In the end there is little difference between all of this and Christianity. There is a requirement upon us to tell others about the importance of Christianity. That will always be a difficult sell but at least at its roots it has the advantage that it is simpler than voting or the referendum; love your neighbour as yourself. #loveyourneighbour Peter Farley

Ninian moments We arrived in Scotland on the day of the referendum on the first stage of our annual trip north to see the family. We had planned to go in May, but grandson got in the way. The original plan had been to go to the Galloway Forest and stay for four nights in the Dark Park and see the Milky Way in all its glory. Unfortunately, in rescheduling around the grandson I forgot that the referendum was the day after the shortest night. So not much hope of any darkness at all Scotland, let alone darkness enough to see the stars.

Our second mistake was to follow the SatNav once we were on the road from Gretna to Stranrar, never a good idea with a caravan.

Instead of following the main road along the coast we were guided along the slightly shortened, slightly less main “Queens Drive�

through the Galloway forest, which took significantly longer. But when we got there the site was good so ‘all’s well the ends well’.

Whilst we were out and about, by an extraordinary set of coincidences, we arrived at Wigtown, the Scottish equivalent of Hay-on-Wye with a bookshop on every corner and many inbetween. The other tourist attraction in the town is a memorial to the Covenanter’s martyrs of whom two were reputedly drowned, tied to a stake in the tidal river.

The Covenanters were Christians who believed that God ruled, not the King, and had signed a declaration saying so. Therefore between 1638 and 1688 while the Stuart dynasty ruled on the basis of the Divine Right of Kings such people would obviously be seen as dissenters and as a result unacceptable to the powers that be.

In addition this part of Galloway is steeped in the history of the Celtic Christian Church. The local founding father was St Ninian.

Whilst we were in Wigtown we walked along the old, silted up shore line past the site of the drowning stake, finishing up in the Parish Church. Here, the church elder on visitor duty was a local historian who waxed eloquent about the martyrs. She also told us about the ‘Ninian Moments’. All of the churches in the area have joined together to ensure that a Christian presence is maintained at the church in Whitehorn, which is the location of the original St Ninian church buildings. There is much archaeological activity there and as a result many visitors. Therefore it was decided that every day at noon someone from one of the local churches would attend, read a lesson and offer a prayer. This was to be their way of reminding the visitors that this is not just an archaeological site or 26

an ancient monument, but an important location in the development of the Christian church. Our historian informer also wanted to talk about the way that the spirit had moved as a result of this simple daily action. She would have talked about it all day but I will recount two of her stories.

One of the people who happened to arrive at one of the readings was a local man about whom nothing was known. He had returned home after an accident as a Post Doctorate physics researcher with Professor Higgs, which resulted in acute photophobia and an inability to tolerate sunlight. He then stayed at home and looked after his parents until they died, living the life of a hermit. Moved by the actions of the reader he became a Participant in the Ninian Moments and this had given him a new family and a new life.

On another occasion the reader had chosen to read the passage about the lilies of the field which do not toil, are not bothered about what they wear and yet for how much more are you loved than a lily in the field. Without knowing, one of the visitors that morning was a ‘transgender’ individual. Needless to say there was a happy outcome.

As Christians we are still required to step out in faith to see how the spirit challenges us to new beginning at home, at church and at play. I am not sure how a Ninian moment would go down in Erdington High Street. However, as the congregation at Erdington Methodist Church, we can see all around us what can be achieved when we are bold and we walk out in faith.
