Minister’s Letter Dear Friends, This summer is a bit of a watershed! Not only is Paul on Sabbatical, but I finish my initial training for the Ministry on July 8th.

Over the past two years I have held on tightly to these verses from Philippians 3:10-14: “I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Pressing on towards the goal of finishing training has been the major task since 2013 – but it seems to be a time to press on to a beginning and not to an ending!

I am beginning in Methodist Ministry at Castle Bromwich Methodist Church on September 1st. It is a real privilege and I hope it will also be a joy to serve Christ and press on to that for which God has called me.

My role at Castle Bromwich Methodist is as part-time Minister, so I hope to keep in touch with friends in the Sutton Park Circuit.

I want to thank you for all your love and prayers and support as I have made the journey to this point, and would also like to extend an invitation to you to join me at my Welcome Service on Sunday 6th September, 3.00 pm, at Carrs Lane Methodist/URC Church.

It is right behind New Street Station, so very easy to get to and it would be a joy to see you there. Have a good summer!

ViSION – Moving towards the conclusion Essentially the first major phase is completed although not signed off because there are still small matters outstanding. Main things left to do are the rest of the windows in the hall and facing the car park. Then a transformation of the church with upgraded lighting, new chairs and new carpet on the dais.

The chairs are ordered and expect delivery towards the end of July.

We are grateful for the interest shown and comments made, helping us with our decisions. All ideas and preferences were discussed and inevitably some of you may be disappointed that your choice has not been taken up. It seemed that everyone liked the colour of the chairs for the church. Some wanted a variety of colours, but most thought that too much colour would detract from the impact of the windows and in any case the cost would be more.

We discussed 2/3 colours but even that was not popular. We noted that 10 chairs with arms were insufficient and ordered 30 of those and 100 of the others. Cost again was a factor – the arm chairs were more expensive and less than 100 of the others were also dearer per unit. To have a wider chair made would have been a huge increase. We also ordered 30 of the other chairs for the foyer, in a wine colour, to match as closely with the 2 red chairs we already have.

Following Stockland Green’s idea, and of other churches, we are asking for you to buy a chair for the church. It can be an individual purchase, a family purchase or maybe some groups in the church can buy one and have a plaque, with appropriate wording on it.

We evened out the cost of the chairs, to work out at £81 each, with £14 if you wish for a plaque. We will ensure that we know what 5

everyone wants, and all potential donors are given a form to complete.

We have also asked the circuit churches if they would be willing to buy one.

We know that this adds on to your on-going generosity, but are very grateful for all the support that the church has given in all sorts of ways.

Events July 4th, very soon after the July Contact is published there will be the Safari Supper at £10 a ticket – this will be a 3 course meal with coffee afterwards. If there are not enough people on the list then the evening may be organised differently.

July 25th 2.00 pm – 5.00 pm Ann Tomes is opening up her garden for Vision. It is a lovely garden and many of you will look forward to another visit. Refreshments will be available. We aren’t selling tickets for this, instead we hope you will make a donation.

Wednesday August 12th 12.30 pm for 1.00 pm, is Tram’s Vietnamese meal, and tickets will be £7.00, Later in this magazine there is the menu, and it will all be fresh food and no spicy food.

October 10th at 7.30 pm We are very pleased to have Ethan Cruxton’s opera group entertain us. Some of you heard them at our Christmas Tree Festival – they are super. More details later.

October 17th 10.00 pm -1.00 pm will be a coffee morning and photograph exhibition, hopefully containing a lot of your photographs! The winners will be announced, and prizes (small!) will be awarded. We are pleased that the Sutton U3A photography group , and the Fircones’ one meeting at church, are taking part too. The latter will be supplying the judges.

We are happy to receive entries at any time, but at the latest by Sunday September 6th.

Chief Scout Silver Awards On 31st May, three Cubs from the 177th Cub Pack, went to Blackwell Adventure in Bromsgrove to be presented with their Chief Scout Silver Award. This is the highest award a cub scout can achieve and its very hard work! They have had to do all sorts of activities, such as camping, climbing, cooking, doing a good turn. Probably the most arduous task was keeping their bedroom clean and tidy for a week!

The majority of our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts get their Chief Scout Award if they participate in the activities the leaders provide, so I think it's a great credit to us as a group to see so many of our young people, not just the cubs who attended the presentation, succeed.

Chained Pulpit Bible Not so long ago Don and I visited St. Peter’s Church in Melverley, near Shrewsbury. It’s a tiny church which dates back hundreds of years. On entering we spotted a huge old Bible chained to the lectern. Could this be one of the remaining Great Bibles dating back to the reign of King Henry VIII?

King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon were married for 23 years and 11 months, but during the final 6 years of their marriage, the king became increasingly infatuated with Anne Boleyn to the point where he wanted a divorce. At this time England was a Catholic country and only the Pope could annul a marriage. Henry believed that as King of England and Wales the Pope should grant him a divorce. The Pope, however, refused. Henry then took matters into his own hands and granted himself a divorce. In January 1533 he married Anne Boleyn who was already pregnant with their first child. This marriage took place before his marriage to Catherine of Aragon was dissolved. Later, King Henry made himself Supreme Head of the Anglican Church. This proved to be 9

greatly significant for it led to the Protestant Reformation after his split with the Roman Catholic Church.

One of Henry’s decisions as he set up his new church was to ensure the scriptures would no longer be written in Latin. They were written in English and hefty new Bibles were distributed to all churches in England. These Bibles were chained to the pulpit to prevent people from stealing them. The king also demanded that a reader should be appointed in every church so that everybody could hear the Word of God. These enormous Chained Pulpit Bibles authorised by King Henry VIII are now very few in number. I discovered that the Bible in St. Peter’s Church, Melverley, is approximately 300 years old, so it seems reasonable to conclude it is not one of the original Great Bibles. Although this is hardly surprising and maybe just a little disappointing, it did bring to mind a truly significant time in the history of our country.

A Ramble and a ‘spin off’!

On June 6th our ramble took us from Kenilworth Castle (well worth a visit!) to Honiley and back. A super walk on a beautiful sunny summer’s day.

We ate our picnic in Honiley Churchyard sitting on conveniently placed benches (apart from a few who weren’t quick enough and had to sit on the grass!). Honiley Church is lovely & well maintained & also well worth a visit. We felt very lucky as the bells started to ring whilst we ate. The bell ringer then left the church and came to chat with us telling us that the bells in a nearby church were on view at the moment as they had been restored recently – the 1st time since 1921!

Anthony & I decided to go & see them on Sunday afternoon and duly arrived (Anthony lured by tea & cakes!) at Leek Wootton (where on earth did that name originate?). The bells were on display and the Tower Captain, Mark, whom we met the day before was there to tell us the story.

The 1st bell in the church dated from 1360 – can you imagine that! – 675 years ago when Edward lll was King. The original 5 bells have been restored at John Taylor & Co at Loughborough, plus the addition of a second hand tenor and a newly cast treble bell returning the church to a peal of six bells and a clock bell (the ‘Ancient bell’ from1360). The peal is now a ring of six and ready to ring out for another century. What a sight and privilege. Would love to be there at the 1st ringing!

We were allowed into the bell tower – not for the faint hearted I must say! It was a steep climb up a narrow, stone spiral staircase 11

and then a 15ft ladder to where the bells will hang. A bit hairy but well worth it!

Interesting point: - whilst the bells are on the church floor for insurance purposes they cannot be left day or night! So the congregation are taking it in turns to have a bell sleep over (helped by the Beavers!)

Thomas the Tank Engine - Follow up I was interested to read Peter’s article on the creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, particularly because I had met him. I don’t know whether he envied W H Auden’s flair for poetry, but I suspect that the Rev Awdry, who wrote the ‘Thomas’ books preferred writing about trains – and other children’s stories. In fact they were born within 4 years of each other but Auden, a well-known poet became a naturalised American and died in 1973. Wilbert Vere Awdry died in 1997. He was born in Hampshire , was an Anglican cleric, railway enthusiast and author. In 1996 he was awarded the OBE. As Peter wrote, the train stories started when Christopher, his son was ill, and were written for him. When still a child the family moved to Wiltshire and their house was called ‘Journeys End’ From Wikipedia …

It was only 200 yards from the western end of Box Tunnel. There the Great Western Railway main line climbs at a gradient of 1 in 100 for two miles. A banking engine was kept there to assist freight trains up the hill.

These trains usually ran at night and the young Awdry could hear them from his bed, listening to the coded whistle signals between the train engine and the banker as well as the sharp bark from the locomotive exhausts as they fought their way up the incline. Awdry related: "There was no doubt in my mind that steam engines all had definite personalities.

I would hear them snorting up the gradient, and little imagination was needed to hear in the puffings and pantings of the two engines. The conversation they were having with one another: 'I can't do it! I can't do it! I can't do it!' 'Yes, you can! Yes, you can! Yes, you can!” Here was the inspiration for the story of Edward helping Gordon's train up the hill, a 18

story that Wilbert first told his son Christopher some 25 years later, and which appeared in the first of the Railway Series books’ Rev Awdry was a curate for a while in Kings Norton, Birmingham and moved to Cambridge later. In 1965 he retired and moved to Stroud in Gloucestershire, where his wife died 4 years later. They actually lived in Rodborough Avenue, a short cul-de-sac just outside the town, and where John’s parents lived. They knew him well and not only did I meet him at their house, I also gave him a lift in the car, somewhere! Why didn’t I ask for his autograph? – a missed opportunity! It is only in the last few years that I have remembered this connection, with both grandchildren loving his stories and all that now goes with them.

How I met Bear Grylls On Friday 13th February me my mom and my dad went to the ITV Studios in London at the invitation of Bear Grylls. The reason that we went to meet Bear Grylls was because my dad is a member of the GB Paraclimbing team (climbing indoors with a disability).

He has Retinitis Pigmentosa which affects your sight. He has had it since he was 13 or 14. My dad has only 3% vision, it is like looking down a long tunnel and then only seeing patches of that, my dad also has a hearing loss, which he was born with.

We got to sit in the green rooms just outside of where they film the programme ‘This Morning’. We also got to watch him enter the show ‘This Morning’ on the television in the green room, where we saw him smashing through the window. After his interview on ‘This Morning’ we got to meet him in another green room, where he spent at least 15 minutes talking to my dad about one of his latest adventures about going up the West Flank of the Eiger in Switzerland in July 2015 Anjali Churcher 20

Things We Can Learn from a Dog ..

1. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride.

2. Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.

3. When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

4. When it's in your best interest, practise obedience.

5. Let others know when they've invaded your territory.

6. Take naps and stretch before rising.

7. Run, romp and play daily.

8. Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.

9. Be loyal.

10. Never pretend to be something you're not.

11. If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

12. When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.

13. Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

14. On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

15. When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

16. No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout ‌ run right back and make friends.

Summer Sunshine This is the last Contact before the summer break. Hopefully, whilst publication is in abeyance many of you will all have a break. Then in the autumn you will be refreshed and reinvigorated to write and tell us all about your summer sunshine experiences.

Whilst we were away in Scotland trying to find our sunshine we were beset by unseasonably poor weather. One of our aims was to visit Islay and Jura from our holiday base in Kintyre. On the Sunday we went to the ferry terminal at Kennacraig to book a return crossing. The lady behind the counter smiled at me and said there is a gale coming in, come back on Wednesday. She then proceeded to show me the wind speed forecast for the next three days on her monitor. We were to experience these winds first hand over the next two nights because we had sited our caravan on a pitch right down by the beach, overlooking the Sound of Jura. But the demonstration that the strength of the upcoming wind was known made me stop and think about weather forecasting.

Weather lore, such as ‘red sky at night’, has probably been known since farmers first looked up at the sky. The earliest known records are contained within the Sanskrit Upanishads, which are dated circa 3,000 B.C. The Greeks obviously had a hand in it and around 600 B.C. Thales wrote a piece describing the water cycle of evaporation, clouds and rainfall. However an accurate understanding of the weather needs three things to have happened, before any serious forecasting could be attempted.

elements of the weather - wind speed and direction, atmospheric pressure and temperature (because this affects pressure).

The ability to collect such information from a wide area in a timely fashion and then distribute it to where it is needed.

The political will to provide such a service?

The wind direction was not a problem. Weather vanes on church towers have probably been there as long as there have been church towers.

Thermometers were also relatively easy. The ancient Greeks knew of the principle. By 1724 Daniel Fahrenheit was making thermometers with reproducible scales.

Atmospheric pressure is a different matter altogether. The development of the Mercury barometer is attributed to Evangelista Torricelli in 1644 while the more portable Aneroid barometer was invented in 1844 by Lucien Vidi.

Collecting data from a wide range of places needed the electric telegraph. The first practical system arrived in 1843 followed very quickly by Morse and printed telegraphy.

Wind speeds were systematised in 1806 by Francis Beaufort. The cup anemometer for accurately measuring wind speed was patented in 1846.

The necessary political will resulted from a shipwreck disaster. In 1859 a hurricane force 12 storm drove the ‘Royal Charter’, a steam clipper plying between Liverpool and Australia, onto the rocky 23

coast of Anglesey, with the loss of about 450 lives and an unknown quantity of gold. This inspired Robert FitzRoy, then at the Board of Trade with the responsibility of collecting weather information, to investigate the practicalities of weather forecasting. He set up a group of 15 weather stations across the country, which reported in their local information on a regular basis. This was then put onto a map not unlike the ones that we see every night on the telly. The first weather forecast map was published in the Times in February 1861. The following year a system of visual storm warnings were initiated at all major ports. Again it took loss of life on the east coast, because a warning from the west coast was ignored before these warnings were regularly heeded.

The minister went to the bank and asked for a statement of his account, adding: “We want to know how far afield we can go for our holiday.” Handing him his statement the cashier enquired very gently: “Have you got a field at the back of your garden, sir?”

News from the 177th Scout Group A visit from a local Councillor To complete the Community Challenge badge we invited a visitor to the cub and scout meetings on 22nd May. Here is a report by Hannah, one of our patrol leaders: I am writing a report on a local councillor called Robert Allden who came to visit our scout group. First he introduced himself and told us a little bit about the electoral process. Once there is a general election whoever wins the vote stays in that position for another four years. This means that even if the government is Conservative our representative can still be part of a different party. For example our representative is Jack Dromey who is part of the Labour party.

Robert Allden is part of the Conservative party. I found a lot of the things they plan to do very interesting. One thing is the plans for the Erdington swimming baths. He explained to us that the building is a listed building. This means that the building can’t be knocked down. Also, if they would like to renovate it they have to comply with listed building regulations. He explained this can make it very difficult for any work to be done on the building and surrounding areas.

Robert Allden explained that Sainsbury's has bought the garage between Orphanage Road and Birmingham New Road, but the only thing is they aren’t actually thinking of building anything yet.

They bought it to stop rival companies from opening up a shop near their supermarket.

After he explained about some of the plans for Erdington, Robert Allden allowed us to ask questions. Everyone found it very 25

interesting and was very keen to find out about our community.

One particular topic of conversation was about the renovation of the roads. The government are working through our community to improve our town and livelihoods. This is why its important for us to learn about our country and government.

And now a Royal visit, 20th April 2015 Some of you may know that, in addition to my role as Group Scout Leader of the 177th, I also chair the Board of Directors of Blackwell Adventure. Blackwell Adventure is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Birmingham Scout Association and is the management company for the scout activity centres at Blackwell Court and Pikes Pool.

Blackwell Court provides residential accommodation and adventurous activities for schools and other youth organisations during term time and traditional camping and adventurous activities for scouts and guides at weekends and during the school holidays.

We employ about 20 permanent staff and, at peak season, up to 40 occasional instructors. However, each year we also welcome about 12 ‘gap students’ who join us from February to October to act as paid activity instructors and this year we have instructors from Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ghana. The gap year programme is co-ordinated by Latitude, an international organisation of which Her Royal Highness, The Princess Anne, is patron and it is in this capacity that she visited Blackwell Court.

We had known that we would host the visit since the end of January which had given us ample opportunity to commission all the new signage, spruce up the site, paint and refurbish the gap 26

student accommodation and, of course, paint and refresh what might become the ‘royal toilet’!

Some three weeks before the visit the date became public knowledge and we all had to send in our passport details so we could officially attend. Royal Protection officers visited to check out security and sniffer dogs roamed the 50 acre site. Instructions were received on what we should wear (it was not a formal scout visit so uniform was not appropriate) and how we should address the Princess. Only shake hands if a hand is offered to you, first address her as ‘Your Royal Highness’ then ‘ma’am’ as in ‘jam’ not as in ‘farm’ – all understood and we awaited the big day.

Fortunately it was a beautiful warm and sunny April afternoon.

The helicopter of the royal flight, much larger than on the telly, landed in the campsite bending trees with the downforce from the rotor blades and generally creating a very loud noise. Her Royal Highness alighted and, together with the Lord Lieutenant, strode across the Manor House lawn (through the rows of flag waving primary school children who had been shipped in for the day) to meet the official welcome party. First the civic dignitaries, then the Chair of Latitude and then, as the Blackwell Adventure host, me.

All had gone as planned with handshakes and introductions but, to my surprise, the Princess decided she was going to enter into conversation with me about the history of the Manor House which was immediately behind us. Having explained that the house and estate was given to the Scouts by the Douglas Turner family (who have kindly made two substantial donations to our Vision fund), she moved on down the line and then we all transferred inside to the formal welcome during which a couple of gap students told the Princess about their time at Blackwell Court.

Now it was time for the royal walkabout. The school children had changed into casual clothes and were in full flow at each of the activities instructed, on this occasion, by the gap students. First the outdoor climbing and abseiling tower, then the two 250 metre zip wires, next the crate stacking and finally more adventurous activities on the 20 metre high frame. At each activity the Princess spoke to all of the children and, of course, the gap students, resulting in the day’s programme now running late.

After a short tour of the student accommodation the Princess met the various guests and unveiled a plaque to commemorate the visit.

Her Royal Highness spoke briefly of her appreciation of the work done by volunteers and then it was time to leave in the helicopter.

We have received many favourable comments about the day not least from the Royal Protection Officer who texted from the helicopter to say how much the Princess had enjoyed her afternoon at Blackwell Court.

A lot is said about royal visits but the Princess was charming throughout the visit and appeared genuinely interested in both the work of the organisations and the individuals who support them. I believe that as members of the Royal family there are some tasks that they ‘have to do’ and some they enjoy doing. This visit was definitely one of the latter.

Methodist Conference This year's Methodist Conference takes place in Southport at the Southport Theatre & Convention Centre from 25th June to 2nd July.

The Conference is the governing body of the Methodist Church and meets annually to discuss matters affecting the life of the Church, the nation and the world.

Highlights this year include: • the induction of the new President (the Revd Steven Wild) and the Vice-Present (Dr Jill Barber) on Saturday 27th June at 2.15 pm, followed by the addresses • new ministers being received into Full Connexion and ordination services on Sunday 28th June from 10.45 am • Courage, Cost & Hope: the Report on the Past Cases Review on Monday 29th June at 11.15 am • issues of Connexionalism on Tuesday 30th June at 11.15 am • mission and heritage activities resourced by the President and Vice-President on Tuesday 30th June at 2.15 pm • discussion of fossil fuels and ethical investment on Thursday 2nd July at 9.30 am • induction of the Secretary of the Conference on Thursday 4th July at 11:15 am.
