Minister’s Letter Dear friends Let me say a personal, heartfelt and big ‘thank you’ to everyone for the wonderful support you’ve given us during my mother’s illness and since her death. Alex and I have felt upheld and loved through it all, and we’ve been very aware of the support and prayers of our Christian family. Please accept our thanks.

Now we move forward from Easter, and God’s Spirit leads us ever forward. You’ll see from the magazine that I shall be on sabbatical in June, July and August, but there’s lots still happening in the life of the Church. Alongside our regular events, there are the ‘Meeting Jesus’ evenings every Wednesday through May. The Danish Gospel Choir will be with us from 22nd -24th May, and the Walk Through the Old Testament on 30th May promises to be a fantastic day.

Sometimes we say the Church is a family, and that’s true. You’ve made that so real to Alex and me over the last few weeks! But we’re more than a family: families don’t generally invite others to join them. They grow by having children, not usually by inviting others to be one of them. We’re here in God’s name to offer Christ and invite people to follow him. He is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). Our love for him means we can’t keep him to ourselves. So does our love for the world, for this world is lost without him. We must never lose sight of God’s mission. As we approach Pentecost, we celebrate the moment when the first Christians were inspired to move outwards to the lost, for, as Peter said on the day of Pentecost, ‘the promise is for you and your 3

children and for all who are far off – for all whom the Lord our God will call’ (Acts 2:39).

Both were highly inspirational. Our brief visit was made all the more memorable by the very warm welcome extended to us by Tram, who stopped her cleaning work and guided us around. Congratulations and Christian love to you all.

How to Get Rich Quick A young man asked an rich old man how he had made his fortune.

The old man replied: "Well, lad, it was 1932, the depth of the Great Depression. I was down to my last shilling. I invested that shilling in an apple. I spent a few minutes polishing that apple and sold the apple for a shilling and six pence. The next morning, I invested that shilling in another apple, and after carefully polishing it, also sold it for a shilling and six pence. I continued this system for a month and by the end of which I'd accumulated a fortune of 14 shillings. Then my wife's father died and left us two million pounds!”

Walk Through the Old Testament We’re thrilled to offer a day of lively and interactive seminars, by speakers from Walk Through the Bible Ministries, helping us to understand the people, times and places of the Old Testament.

It will enthuse you and help you to go on to read the Bible more for yourself.

Vestry team Have you ever wondered what goes on in the vestry before a service?? Well, there’s the basic hospitality of welcoming the preacher and making sure that he or she has everything they need and that they are prayed with. There are some practical jobs to be done in the worship area – putting hymn numbers on the board, checking the sound system, making sure there’s a hymn book and a glass of water in the pulpit, etc. We are starting a rota of people who do these things and if you would like to help with any of these jobs, please ask one of the stewards about going on the rota.

They’ll guide you through what happens and how to do it.

Vision Update The next stage of the project, the toilet upgrade, is completed, and is a very welcome part of the refurbishment.

There are still other items to complete and all under discussion..

Hopefully there will soon be new noticeboards which will include Paul’s details, new lighting in the church and chairs to buy – hopefully some samples soon - as well as new doors at the car park end of the building.

So fund-raising is still necessary although we have done so well in such a short time, and hopefully by the end of 2015 we will have nearly all we need!

Applications are ongoing, including second ones to those who have already supported us – and those who did not! We still need your support in whatever way you can help. On May 9th we have a coffee morning and Gift Day. There will not be many extra stalls as cash/ cheque donations are what this is all about. There will be a donation box and envelopes will be given out for those who are able to Gift Aid their donation. Thank you so much for what you have given so far, and what you are still able to give, will be greatly appreciated.

Rev Paul’s sabbatical Ministers are required to take a 3 month break every seven years, as ‘a time for renewal, study, reflection and recreation’. Rev Paul’s next one is June-August this year, and he will be using the time to study Black Theology and Spirituality, as well as having quality time with Alex and their families and friends. He’s also intending to refresh body, soul and spirit with some fell-walking! During that time, if you need a minister urgently you’ll be able to contact any of the other Circuit ministers. Carole McSheen is chairing the ‘Sabbatical Support Group’, whose job it is to arrange cover for Paul. Please pray for Paul & Alex, that the time will revitalise them and equip them for the next stage of ministry, especially as Alex prepares to take her place as minister at Castle Bromwich.

Connexion Issue 2 The second issue of the connexion focuses on the vibrant work of chaplains: lay and ordained, paid and volunteer.

Their range of work is quite astonishing and is testament to the way that Methodism is continuing to live out John Wesley's belief that everything in life was the subject of his concern, and the whole of society was the field of his mission.

This issue has stories from around the world, from Grenada and Ghana and a timely reminder, just before the general election, of how churches across Europe are wrestling with issues of people movement and migration. An electronic version is available from the Methodist Church Website.

Cracked Recently someone told me that the most unusual thing that I had ever written for Contact was my piece about ear wax. Well this week I saw a report that was about as unusual. Some might say research not of the ‘blindingly obvious’ but more of the ‘why on earth?’

For many years scientists have wondered why some people can crack their knuckles and some cannot and why, when they do, it makes that annoying popping noise. The first suggestion came in 1947 when Roston and Haines did the experiment of tugging on a subject’s finger until the knuckle popped. They reported that a pull of 7kg was required and that this separated the joint by about half a centimetre. In addition they suggested that as the joint separated there was a reduction in the internal pressure and the dissolved gas came out of the synovial fluid, a bit like opening a bottle of fizzy pop. They calculated that it was the creation of this bubble that created the noise. The suggestion that the gas came out of the synovial fluid was supported by the fact that it was 20 minutes or so before the joint could be popped again.

This became the accepted theory until 1971 when a research group in Leeds (Unsworth, Dawson and Wright) challenged this accepted norm by suggesting that it was the collapsing of the bubble, like the rapid condensing of steam, which created the popping sound. I must admit that this has always been my accepted answer.

Now the sound has been finally pinned down. A subject named Fryer has had his fingers pulled one at a time until they popped.

However on this occasion it was done in an MRI scanner and it is 9

now demonstrated without doubt that it is the creation of the bubble that causes the noise.

However the research made no progress at all in determining why some people can crack and others can’t. Also why even those who can, often have joints that won’t.

One additional fact though did come out. Apparently cracking knuckles does no long-term damage.

Danish Gospel Choir We’re delighted that a Gospel choir from Aarhus in Denmark is flying over to Birmingham to be with us on the weekend of 22nd -24th May. They’ll be giving a concert for the Circuit at Erdington on the Saturday evening and leading the Sunday morning service, and they hope to go into the city centre to sing on the Saturday afternoon as an outreach. The choir members are paying their own airfares and UK travel to and from Stansted, but we need to provide them with accommodation in our homes on the Friday and Saturday nights. ‘The Ark’ The biblical story of Noah and the Ark has been told and retold down the ages, in medieval mystery plays, in children’s books and even in opera. Now network television has had its turn, writes David Winter.

‘The Ark’, a full-length made for television film starring David Threlfall, was shown on BBC 1 over the Easter break, and will soon be available on DVD. It is a moving examination of the human and emotional issues which the story raises. The most visual elements of it are not prominent. The animals - two by two - are mentioned but not seen.

The monstrous flood - storm, deluge and fast-rising tide - are there, but more as a dramatic background to the story than as its cause.

Instead, the writer, Tony Jordan, skilfully dissects the impact on a loving, united family (husband, wife, three sons and their wives) of the stubborn conviction of a dominant patriarch that he has received a message from God which he must at all costs obey. As it involved building a massive boat in the middle of the desert seventy miles from the sea, and in the process completely disrupting the rhythm and security of their agrarian life-style, it tested the family’s love and loyalty to breaking point.

The film raises all manner of issues. How do we respond to people who are absolutely convinced that what they are doing is in response to a divine command, however bizarre it may seem to everyone else? What are the limits of family loyalty? Does science explain natural events like the flood, or can they also have a meaning beyond human reason? A starry cast and a brilliant script 11

bring these issues vividly to life, most notably in the struggle of Noah’s wife to understand her husband’s obsession.

It all ends with a rainbow, of course - beauty and promises about the future. But at what a price! I can see this film enlightening and stimulating many a home discussion group.

Meeting Jesus Bible studies looking at some of the meetings people had with Jesus continue on Wednesday evenings until 27th May and all are welcome. Don’t worry if you’ve missed any so far – each one is complete in itself, so you can come to one or all of them. The meetings take place at Stockland Green Methodist Church, starting at 7.30 pm.

Making Christians?

It is not our responsibility ‘to make people Christians’ and get them baptised into a particular denomination, but rather to help people decide to follow Jesus and his radical message. Maybe this is why the New Testament writers only use ‘Christian’ three times, but use ‘disciple’ on 269 occasions!

We thought it was all over!

News from the United States that 107 children have been left paralysed from what is being described as a Polio like disease is deeply concerning.

This is one of the headlines in the British Polio Fellowship’s magazine this month.

It offers a stark reminder of times past when the world was plunged into a Polio epidemic that killed thousands and left many thousands more with lasting effects of the disease – effects that they may still be feeling now in the form of the late effects of Polio and Post Polio Syndrome (PPS). The British Polo Fellowship is following the situation in the US closely.

Polio has almost been eradicated, with only a handful of countries still facing the disease in an endemic state; despite this there are 120,000 people in the UK still battling the late effect of Polio and PPS that develop years after the initial infection, affecting as many people as suffer from Parkinson’s disease but which is much less talked about and recognised.

Pentecost then – and now?

It was Edward Lorenz in the 1960s who first described the butterfly effect, which explains how a small event can have a profound effect elsewhere. In climate terms, the tiny atmospheric disturbance of flapping butterfly wings in Africa can eventually give rise to a hurricane in the Atlantic. We can also apply this effect to a unique event like Pentecost (Acts 2:1-13), which is still having a profound effect on us today. How can we experience the full effect of Pentecost in our own lives and churches?

Pentecost is God’s promise to us: ‘When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.’ (Acts 2:1). If we are to experience the power of the Spirit in our lives, it means being in the right place to receive. The disciples followed Jesus’ instructions as they gathered in the Upper Room, ‘Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.’ (1:4). If God is going to use us and do new things in our lives, we cannot rely on our own plans and ideas, but trust Him to direct and equip us. Like the surfer waiting to catch the wave, timing is everything!

God wants to empower us: ‘All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit’ (4). Just as we are dependent on electric power in our homes, so we need the power of the Spirit to empower our lives. He alone has the power to transform our lives into Christlikeness and empower our witness. The disciples’ experience of this power was overwhelming, with wind and fire. However, it was essentially an encounter with God’s love, which for us can be equally emotional or very quiet. However, all of us are included and nobody is excluded from this experience.

We are empowered for a purpose: The disciples ‘began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.’ (4). The Spirit empowered them to witness, with the result that everyone heard them speaking in their ‘native language’ (lit: dialect, v8). We all have a story to tell of what God means to us and it’s the Spirit who translates what we share and do, so those around us can understand! At Pentecost, 3000 people were added to the church in one day! What are our expectations of what the Spirit can do today?

Syria crisis: the human cost of four years of fighting As the Syria conflict entered its fifth year this Spring, the largest humanitarian crisis since World War II continues to escalate. The need for the international community to redouble its efforts to bring about a political solution could not be greater, says Christian Aid. Over 200,000 people have been killed inside Syria and half of the population has been forced to leave their homes. More than seven and a half million people are internally displaced and a further four million have fled to neighbouring countries.

It is estimated that more than 12 million people inside Syria, and millions more refugees across Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq and Jordan are now in need of humanitarian assistance as a result of the conflict.

The UN has described it as ‘the worst humanitarian crisis of our time’.

Frances Guy, Head of Middle East at Christian Aid said, “It’s hard to ignore the relentless turmoil of the Middle East these days. But whilst all the UK headlines are dominated by the terror of the socalled Islamic State there is a danger we forget the millions of Syrians, Iraqis and Palestinians, who have been forced to flee their homes.

“Families are living in cramped and overcrowded conditions in countries struggling to cope with the overwhelming number of refugees. Inside Syria itself, millions of people have been displaced from their homes, trying to seek sanctuary in safer parts of the country.

Within Syria Christian Aid is responding through its ACT Alliance sister agency, the International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC), to reach people with food, bedding, water clothes, shelter, healthcare and education. To date they have reached over 2 million people in need.

From my Sketchbook

This was a spectacular place, atmospheric and superbly beautiful.

Awe inspiring. I felt totally bowled over by its magnificence, tranquillity, and grandeur. I sat in a field gateway to draw, to the accompaniment of bleating Herdwick sheep, the twittering chatter of swallows gathering mud from the banks of a nearby stream, constructing incredible cup shaped nests under the overhanging eaves of house and barn.

The day was superb, warm and sunny with just a light refreshing breeze. The sky was blue and wisps of thin cloud passed, from time to time, across the landscape. What more could an artist wish for? Such inspiration as was before me occurred very occasionally.

The farmstead standing at the foot of Pike o’Stickle is set among other mountains which occupy the area of Great Langdale in the Lake District. Mountains can be difficult to capture on paper because of sheer size and scale. Everything surrounding has to be scaled accordingly. The inclusion of a building helps create definite form and scale. The artist tries to replicate the texture of scree and boulder, both craggy and smooth giving them their distinctive appearance. Including these ancient buildings to the scene against such a backdrop make them appear as if they have grown from the very rocks. This is what I like about The Lakes, so many of their farm buildings seem to have evolved, grown over eons of time rather than been constructed by the hand of man.

With my drawing finished, I walked along a wide flat open track, created by glaciers in the formation of the earth, with wide sweeping green fields grazed by the abundant sheep. This led me towards a farmstead nestling deep within the bosom of the hills, and on reaching the farmyard I discovered that the track became a rough and steep climb, an uphill walk eventually reaching the mighty heights of Great Gable and Scafell. Not for the faint hearted!

I turned to gaze on the towering height of Pike o’Stickle immediately above me. Bare, rocky, beautiful and totally overwhelming. I felt awestruck by the immensity of it. Never having been able to perform rock climbing or even hill walking due to having polio as a child, I had never really been up close to such giants except by car travelling through their valleys. A couple of years previously we had driven along Wast Water beneath the shadow of ‘the screes’ to the foot of Great Gable and Scafell.

On that occasion I had drawn Scafell, one of the most difficult drawings I had ever tackled.

What always comes to mind among such mountains is the quotation from the Bible; “What is man, that Thou art mindful of him……”

Among the hills I felt small and insignificant, but on this occasion I was mightily pleased to have had sufficient skill to capture something of the essence of the place.

Ebola – the crisis is not yet over Tomilola Ajayi, who was working for Christian Aid in Sierra Leone when the Ebola outbreak began, reports on the challenges that survivors and communities face in rebuilding their lives.

Mabinti Mansaray lives in Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital.

She beat Ebola but lost her mother and two daughters to the disease.

Now, like many other Ebola survivors, she faces stigma and discrimination from her community.

Before the crisis hit, Mabinti was a street trader, selling food and other items. She is now unemployed. Widespread quarantines and 21

movement restrictions have jeopardised many people’s livelihoods in Sierra Leone.

As well as having no income, Mabinti has hardly any belongings: everything in her quarantined home – clothes, furniture, documents – was burnt as part of infection control measures.

‘After my neighbours found out I had Ebola they abandoned me,’ she says. ‘They don't come near me anymore.’

Fellow survivor Geraldine Lamin,17, also lost everything she owned. Her mother, father, sister and uncle all died within a short space of time. ‘The whole month was full of tears,’ she says.

‘Before, life was good – I had loving parents and I was going to school; there was peace and joy at home. Now my brother, sister and I live alone and have to support ourselves. People are still scared of us . . . The stigma is still there.’

These stories are echoed across Sierra Leone, where more than 3,300 people have been killed and over 8,500 infected since the outbreak began in May last year. Mabinti and Geraldine are among hundreds of vulnerable people who have received food and household items – including mattresses, utensils and hygiene items – from Christian Aid. Funded by our Ebola Crisis Appeal, which has so far raised just under £1m, these kits are helping survivors and quarantined families in badly affected communities. Our partners have also provided care for 100 orphans and trained 500 faith leaders to give trauma counselling and challenge the stigmatisation of survivors.

As the infection rate slows, we are also addressing the wider impacts of the outbreak.

Jeanne Kamara, Sierra Leone country manager, says: ‘The health crisis has caused enormous socio-economic challenges. That’s why Christian Aid is helping Ebola survivors rebuild their livelihoods, focusing particularly on women and young people.

‘We have to ensure that HIV work and maternal and child healthcare are all prioritised, alongside issues arising from the long-term closure of schools, such as the rise in teen pregnancy.

Meanwhile, foreign companies operating in Sierra Leone must begin to pay their fair share of tax, so that our government can invest much-needed funds to improve our broken health system.

‘The crisis is not yet over. We can’t be complacent: we will continue to encourage communities to follow Ebola prevention measures, so that the virus can be eradicated once and for all.’ from the Christian Aid Magazine

Will you stand with Loko?

As thousands of us prepare to raise millions during Christian Aid Week (10th - 16th May), Hannah Richards reminds us how our efforts can transform the lives of those in even the deepest poverty.

You wake in the dark to feed the baby. You shake down the goathide mat where she has wee’d in the night. She wears no nappies.

The bed you made with branches tied together creaks as you rise.

As the skies start to lighten you are already on your way. The sounds of your children die away as you walk.

‘God please clear all the thorny plants from my way. Help me find good firewood so I can sell it. Help me buy some food for my children because they are going to die.’

One foot in front of the other. You pray. You try to ignore the pains in your stomach.

‘I have to force myself to go out and collect firewood. I do it so I don’t have to face my children crying, weeping, and yelling when they have nothing to eat. I have to go to the bush and collect the wood and carry it down into the town on my back.’

This is Loko Jarso’s reality. Loko walks by herself for hours at a time to get the firewood she needs to sell. But Loko is not alone.

She has you: everyone who paces the streets, delivering and collecting Christian Aid Week envelopes; every person abseiling down a cathedral; every sponsored walker; every cake-maker. Loko and others like her are not alone because we stand with them.

Loko’s budget is impossible: she must feed, clothe, educate and medicate six children all for £4 a week. And her status as a woman is that of a second-class citizen. In her cattle-rearing, pastoralist community in the south of Ethiopia, the traditional laws have prevented women from owning property.

We know this can change, that lives like Loko’s can be transformed.

Christian Aid’s work through our partner HUNDEE has already transformed the lives of so many here. HUNDEE asks communities to identify who are the poorest of the poor. These are invariably women, and often widows like Adi Abduba.

Adi’s situation used to be every bit as precarious as Loko’s. Adi was given a cow and two goats. The cow allows her to nourish her children and make money through selling milk and butter.

In these communities, owning a cow gives you rights. For the first time, the cows carry the name of the women who own them, not their father’s name, nor their husband’s name.

The women meet weekly, to run a loans and savings cooperative, using start-up money from the milk and butter from the cows.

With the weekly support we give them, and the support they give each other, they learn to read and write. They learn about their rights and responsibilities, basic maths and how to run small businesses.

HUNDEE is also helping to change the way the whole community sees women. There is less domestic violence, more joint decisionmaking.

Adi has gone from being the poorest of the poor to being a confident, strong woman. ‘When I think about how our lives are improving, I feel so happy.’

This Christian Aid Week, let’s show Loko that she is not alone.
