Minister’s Letter

" Dear friends!

"

It’s become quite fashionable to claim the world would be a better, safer place without religion. It’s not hard to find evidence that religion can be dangerous, whether it’s a woman donning a suicide vest to kill people she thinks are enemies of God, or a man claiming his religion entitles him to treat women as second class citizens, or someone ‘brainwashing’ vulnerable children with their religion.

These all give ammunition to the sneering ‘new’ atheists, intent on ‘freeing’ the masses from their supposed medieval superstitions.!

The argument doesn’t end there, though. Just because something can be dangerous doesn’t mean it is only dangerous. Water is dangerous – thousands of people a year drown in it – but we can’t live without it. Electricity is dangerous but no-one claims it should be banned. We try to use these dangerous things carefully and well, with checks and balances and precautions. We weigh up the benefits and the risks, trying to maximise the benefits and reduce the risks.!

Notwithstanding the track record of atheism (which is overshadowed by the atheistic societies of communism and fascism) we need to remind society of the benefits of religion, and especially of the Christian faith. Imperfect though they are, our health care, education, social security and system of justice all came into being as a result of Christian influence, even if that influence is now only a faint echo. The way we treat others and our understanding of fairness and tolerance all come from the same Christian roots. Ironically, people are only free to criticise the 3

Church because Christians have established a society where criticism is allowed! The benefits our faith has brought are vast.!

It has motivated lives of compassion and sacrifice, of charity and grace. People can’t be forced to live such lives – they have to spring up from the heart – and we can’t compel people to believe as we believe. What we can do, though, is to show our friends and neighbours the benefits of a life lived for God and in God’s power and seek to share with them the message of God’s generosity in Jesus Christ, who came not to bring religion but to make possible a new relationship with the God who, whether people like it or not, is there.!

Vision June 2014

nearing the start of building work

" When the proposal for the project was put forward, I don’t think that anyone was optimistic enough to believe that by June 2014 we would be planning to start the renovations. But this is where we are now, helped on with a recent £20,000 from the Methodist Connexional Property Grant. We are nearly at the £200,000 point – but still £45,000 to go!!

"

By the time this copy of Contact is out the church council will have met and (hopefully!) approved the final main details. If you weren’t able to be there, the plans will be displayed for everyone to have a closer look, or first time look, at them. Everyone should have received a letter about the project by now.!

"

Over the summer (and beyond) we hope to demolish the outside cloister, create a new entrance and build a ramp and steps up to it.

The foyer will be extended and a screen with glass sliding doors installed between that and the worship area. A new wall will be built with railings along the front and side with a noticeboard fitted in. The front will be landscaped, the cross from the end of the cloister attached to the wall with lighting behind it, and there will be new signage at the side where the complete wall will be rendered. Meanwhile Rose has started work on the fused glass.!

Important news is that Stockland Green are hosting a concert given by the Canoldir Choir on September 6th. This is always a popular concert and Stockland Green are donating half the proceeds to the Erdington Vision Fund. This is a very generous gesture and we want to be able to help them by selling as many tickets as possible.

Ev’rybody Doesey Doe!

" On Saturday May 17th about 110 people arrived at church ready to enjoy a Barn Dance. The occasion was Peter Farley’s 70th birthday bash.!

"

The band struck up and suddenly the place was alight. We doesey doed and promenaded our partners and although some of us had two left feet we all enjoyed the fun, the fellowship and the delicious refreshments.!

No bluffing about your age Peter! We all witnessed the vast number of 70s decorating your birthday cake!!

Research says religious people are more charitable

According to statistics released by the BBC, people who practise a religion are more likely to say they have given to charity in the last month than those who don’t.!

"

Responding to the statistics, the Revd Dr Martyn Atkins, General Secretary of the Methodist Church, said: “Religious faith should motivate people to acts of generosity and it’s good to see this reflected in these figures. Of course, financial giving is only part of the picture. For some people a simple act of kindness, or the very fact that someone has made time for them, can mean more than any financial gift. But every act of generosity, however small, bears witness to a generous and loving God and helps to change the world for good.”!

"

The Methodist Church is currently encouraging people to rethink what it means to be generous in their local contexts as part of the A Generous Life campaign, with a range of resources available.

People can also spin an online Wheel of Generosity and commit to small acts of kindness as part of the Church’s campaign.!

"

When asked about the people who had inspired them to be generous, one respondent said: “I am what I am today because of the generosity of time and energy of my Boys' Brigade Officers in Scotland. I was there for five years, walked out at the end of those five years and have never seen them again. They may think they had failed but they planted a seed. One day we will meet again and they will be so surprised that I not only became a Christian but a minister.” - from the Methodist News Service!

Snapshots of WW2

" For over a year I have been following the prequel and actions in WW1, with the U3A, which have been interesting and illuminating.

With the centenary of the outbreak of WW1 and 70th celebration of the Normandy landings in WW2, these horrific wars have been brought very much to the forefront of our thoughts at this time. !

"

Having a great interest in family history my research has always been finding out as much as possible about relatives long gone and seeing how far back in time I can go, as well as adding ‘flesh to the bones’ when I can. The fact that my father spent three and a half years in Algiers, in North Africa, from 1942 until the war ended, has only recently come to the front of my memories. I know very little of his time there and no idea whether he saw any action. As many other people have said, ‘how I wish I had asked him about his time there earlier.’ He volunteered for the RAF, and I believe he did an electrician’s course. I don’t think he actually did any flying.

So I intend researching the African part of the war when I have time.!

"

The other side of the coin was our situation at home. I can only imagine how my mother felt being left with a two year old not knowing when, or if, my father would be back. Added to that, as we were living in a 3-bedroom semi in Gloucester, other people were billeted with us. The house was more or less divided into two parts with the others sharing the kitchen and bathroom. One was a family with a child, who I gather caused a few problems, and the last one was a single nurse. She and my mother got on well and kept in touch after the war. For me, at pre-school age, I wasn’t aware of the changes, and wouldn’t remember what life was like 9

before, coming into the world when war was already a fact. This was my way of life, and young children just take most situations in their stride. !

"

In my memory are snapshots of a few experiences. At about 4 years I remember setting off on my tricycle up the road, on my own – no idea how I escaped! I can see army tanks passing me as I pedalled along. I’ve no idea where I thought I was going and was soon stopped in my tracks! I think my mother was very cross, (I can’t think why!) and that is probably why I remember the incident.!

"

I remember the air raid sirens and their awful wailing which heralded a game of sorts where my mother and I went into hiding.

First it was in the cupboard under the stairs, and later under the Morrison table in the dining room. I have quite a vivid picture of us sitting under this table with my mother knitting clothes for my doll! !

"

There was communication with my father and photographs were sent to him. I think a few of my scribbled pictures went as well.

Occasionally we would receive a parcel from Algiers. I remember a box arriving with chocolate and a single banana. Both foods were unheard of at that time. The chocolate was in blocks and was so hard that it could only be gnawed, but very enjoyable just the same. The single banana was cut into three pieces; one for me and the others for the neighbour’s children. Apparently, very ungratefully, I didn’t like it. I don’t know what happened to it, but I hope that my mother finished it off.!

At the end of the war we had a street party and I remember a lot of noise and singing. The children went in fancy dress and I was ‘Little Boy Blue’ !! I don’t know how that was chosen but I expect my mother had to use whatever material she had to make something for me. She needn’t have bothered, as I hated fancy dress, and I disliked parties for years; this momentous occasion was lost on me.!

A rapidly growing network of Foodbanks has emerged across the UK in recent years. Some are small ‘community larders’, while others seem to operate on an almost industrial scale. As so many local churches have played a part in launching them, the Methodist Church, the Baptist Union, the United Reformed Church and Church Action on Poverty have now published a three-part resource for churches about the growing food poverty crisis.!

Faith in Foodbanks? recognises the ministry of many churches in helping to feed people. It looks at why there has been such a growth in Foodbanks, and suggests ways churches can tackle the underlying causes. !

A treat of birthdays

" Two weeks before my birthday barn dance we were invited to a joint 50th birthday, or as it was known The Joint One Hundredth.

My friends had recently bought a house with a field, which is unsuitable for horses, however as animal lovers they were wanting something living there. So by a process of elimination they decided on Alpaca and they were cute. We did go to celebrate with them, not just to see the alpaca, really, truly.!

"

However it is not only my friends’ birthdays that happen in May, it is also the birthday of a famous chocolate brand, the third and most successful iteration of a melange of hazel nuts and cocoa made by the Ferrero family in Piedmont. History, with all its fallibility, tells us that it all started in the family confectionary business run by Pietro Ferrero after the Second World War. He felt there was a need for a little luxury in a place when hazel nuts are cheap and plentiful but cocoa was expensive and almost unobtainable. People could buy Gianduja but that had the image of price and luxury. Pietro was determined to find something, which would give everyone a little luxury at a price they could afford. Apparently, during the development phase he would wake his wife in the middle of the night to try the latest sample.!

The first iteration of this product was Giandujot a solid preparation that was cut and sliced with a knife. This was later replaced with a spreadable version or Supercrema. Then in April 1964 Nutella was launched and the first recorded sale was on 18th May 1964. Ferrero now sell 365 million kilos worldwide and account for 25% of world production of hazelnuts.!

However all of this is by way of an introduction, to thank everyone who came and celebrated my birthday with me at the Barn Dance.

Everything went approximately to plan: the dancing, the band, the potato man, the puddings, the photos and the clearing up. We managed to eat, give away or freeze the remaining perishables. It all made for a very enjoyable evening. One especially evocative/ nostalgic moment for me during the evening was when I heard Kim Smith playing the spoons. As far as my memory is concerned that is the first time I have heard someone playing the spoons since I was a child. I had three bachelor uncles, who at family parties would engage in frivolities; one would play the saw and another the spoons, I forget the other’s party piece. !

"

Thank you all for coming, helping and celebrating with me, and a special thank you for the amazing ÂŁ700 that was donated. I will share this between the Neonatal Unit at City Hospital and Age UK. !

"Well, I could," our curate replied, "but the couch is easier to move if he's not on it."!

The Good Luck of Right Now – Matthew Quick!

Messy Church celebrates 10th anniversary

" Messy Church is ten years old. What began in April 2004, in Cowplain near Portsmouth, as one congregation, has since been joined by 2342 others worldwide.!

"

This fresh expression of church life builds upon Christ-centred elements of welcome, creativity, sharing food and celebration.

Most Messy Churches meet monthly, at a time that suits the community. They seek to share Christ with families for whom traditional or inherited forms of church life feel alien to their experiences.!

"

Key moments from ten years of Messy Church include: being featured on BBC's 'Songs of Praise'; St Paul's Cathedral in London hosting a Messy Church celebration; Spring Harvest becoming a popular place to dip into Messy Church seminars; Messy Nativity sheep trails popping up in shopping centres around the country each Christmas; and attention from the national press (‘Messy Church crafts colourful alternative Sundays'—The Times)!

Lucy Moore, the founder, says: ‘As I look at the shouting, laughing, praying, awestruck, grateful, life-giving, weeping, eating, loving Messy multitudes gathered in churches around the world, it feels incredibly humbling'. Messy Church is a core ministry of Bible Reading Fellowship.!

Kingstanding Leisure Centre

" On Friday 7th March 2014 eleven members of the 177th Scout troop went to Kingstanding Leisure centre and had a tour of the plant room.!

"

A plant room is a place beneath a swimming pool that powers the whole leisure centre. The tour was conducted by our very own leader, Jack.!

"

If you need to do anything in this room you must wear protective clothing to do so and in an emergency the whole plant can be shut down by pressing one red button. !

"

In the plant room there are three main water pumps and two spare and four boilers that heat the swimming pool. Each of those boilers is equal to three boilers you get in your home! Also in the plant room are four sand filters that make sure the water is clean before it enters the pool. There is also another mesh filter that has to be cleaned by hand. As you can imagine this is not a very nice job.!

"

Before water can go into the pool three chemicals are added to the water to make sure it stays clean. One of the three chemicals is HDH (which is a chemical chlorine). To add the chemicals to the water you must wear a gas mask and wash your eyes out with water or disinfectant. There is a machine there which makes sure the right amount of chemical goes into the water. If too much HDH is added to the water then it will turn a luminous green and the pool will have to be closed for about two days to get it removed specially.!

It would take 45 minutes to empty the pool of water but six hours to fill it back up - as a consequence the pool is never completely emptied.!

" A Birthday treat

About 25 years ago I became fascinated with the suggestion that a fixed link should be built between Denmark and Sweden. I remember there were discussions in New Scientist about the construction of such a link and whether it would disturb the ecology of the Baltic Sea. Should it be a tunnel or a bridge or a mixture of both? Eventually the Oresund Bridge and the Drogden Tunnel were built, to and from an artificial island, carrying a twin railway track and four-lane road. The combined structure opened in 2000 when a royal party from either end met in the middle to cut the official tape. The central part of the bridge is a cable stayed suspension bridge and the 4,000 metre tunnel was constructed of 20 prefabricated concrete sections buried in a trench. Ever since it opened I have talked about taking the caravan to Scandinavia to drive across from the one side to the other.!

Why am I telling you this? Well, as a birthday treat my children bought me flights to Denmark so that I could be driven over the bridge to look at the view. We were booked on the 6.30am flight from Gatwick to Copenhagen, which meant getting up at about 3.30am so that we arrived at the check-in on time. It's a long time since I have seen 3.30 in a vertical position and by lunchtime I was beginning to feel the effects.!

"

We arrived in Copenhagen and immediately were celebrating the joy of travelling, because we were experiencing another culture's solutions to the problems of everyday life and there the most obvious difference was transport. Our hotel was a ten minutes walk from Copenhagen Central Station. With the aim of getting our bearings we walked and whilst we walked we marvelled at how few cars there were, midmorning Friday, in the immediate vicinity of the Copenhagen central station. We commented on the steady stream of buses but were almost overwhelmed by the number of bicycles. They came in all sorts of styles, mountain bikes, racers and sit up and beg. They had carriers for children on the front or on the back. Additionally we were surprised by the number of wheeled boxes in front and trailer behind, for luggage children and friends. Presumably that was why there were so few cars. !

"

Our hotel c/o Expedia was on a broad boulevard with a cafĂŠ, in the sunshine, on the opposite pavement. This was open from 9.00am till 6.00pm and although the tables and chairs were stacked up every evening there was no other security. Presumably there is not a market for second hand cafĂŠ chairs in Denmark.!

On the Saturday we caught a train across The Bridge, not the best way to see the view, but the logistics of the occasional bus service from Copenhagen to Malmo was beyond our powers of organisation in the limited time available. On the train we were presented with two another cultural differences. In the quiet carriage not only were mobile phones banned (verbally and forcefully) but we were also castigated for talking. In addition when I tried to stand between the carriages to take photos through the window I was moved on very politely by the guard. Standing between the carriages was a hazard and would not be tolerated.!

"

Whilst we were in Malmo we did the obligatory boat ride and an exuberant tour guide reminded me that ‘happy wife equals happy life’. A helpful guide in the Tourist Information Office recommended that we to go to the King’s Garden café for lunch.

There we enjoyed real Scandinavian smorgasbord (sliced hardboiled egg and prawns on rye bread) and were surprised by several cultural differences here also. Firstly, this venue amongst the flower beds, were ladies obviously lunch, was self clearing including scraping our left overs into the rubbish container, which was later picked over by the local jackdaws. Secondly there were no handles on the mugs, presumably to facilitate the dishwashing.

Lastly the toilet block consisted of a row of three unisex/disabled toilets/baby change areas. !

"

All in all a wonderful short break, I crossed the bridge, experienced the local culture and came home to normality. Offering thanks for the EU/Schengen agreement, which made a weekend in two countries so easy. I was however slightly annoyed that neither country uses the Euro. Therefore I am left with a few Danish Krona 24

and an equally small number of Swedish Krona, which I can’t imagine I will ever use. C’est la vie.!

Virgil's Bees by Carol Ann Duffy " Bless air's gift of sweetness, honey from the bees, inspired by clover, marigold, eucalyptus, thyme, the hundred perfumes of the wind.

Bless the beekeeper! who chooses for her hives a site near water, violet beds, no yew, no echo. Let the light lilt, leak, green or gold, pigment for queens, and joy be inexplicable but there in harmony of willow herb and stream, of summer heat and breeze, each bee's body at its brilliant flower, lover-stunned, strumming on fragrance, smitten.!

For this, let gardens grow, where beelines end, sighing in roses, saffron blooms, buddleia; where bees pray on their knees, sing, praise in pear trees, plum trees; bees are the batteries of orchards, gardens, guard them.!

This poem about bees is delightfully written by Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate. She wrote it in 2009 after the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. Essentially, she uses the uncertain future of bees to draw our attention to the fact that they are just one of nature’s species which are now endangered. Although this poem’s underlying theme is one of concern, Carol Ann Duffy’s figurative use of language enables a disquieting subject to be a real joy to read.!
