Dear friends!

!

Last month I wrote about the ‘in-between time’ after Jesus rose from the dead and before the great outpouring of God’s Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Luke tells us most about what happened during those days, first in his Gospel and then in the book of Acts, which he also wrote. At the beginning of Acts, he says that in the Gospel he had written about ‘all that Jesus began to do and to teach’ (Acts 1:1).

Just think about those words for a moment…. Luke says that everything from Jesus’ birth to his resurrection – the miracles, the teachings, his death on the cross and resurrection – are only what he began to do. Jesus’ return to heaven isn’t the end: it is just the end of the beginning!!

!

The implication is that Jesus will continue to do and to teach. The book of Acts is Luke’s account of how this happened in his day. He tells us the Holy Spirit empowered those first Christians to continue to do the very things Jesus had been doing – proclaiming God’s rule, healing the sick, even raising the dead. Jesus had told them they would do ‘even greater things’ than he had done (John 14:12-14). And they were quick to recognise and to tell others that this wasn’t their doing – it was the Holy Spirit of Jesus working through them. So the ministry of Jesus continued through his disciples, as the Holy Spirit gave them power. As well as the healings and other miracles, other things happened too.!

!

For one, people’s lives and characters were transformed. Jesus had always been doing this, but if anything he was now doing it even more so! Jesus’ followers found more and more love, joy, peace, 3

patience, kindness and a host of other good things were in their lives (Galatians 5: 16-23). They credited this, quite rightly, not to human effort but to the work of the Holy Spirit.!

!

For another, a new community came into being. People from different languages and races, male and female, rich and poor, found themselves united and committed to loving each other to the extent that they sold their houses to provide for those in need (Acts 4:32-35). This, too, was the work of the Holy Spirit.!

!

The Book of Acts is often called the ‘Acts of the Apostles’. A more accurate name would be the ‘Acts of the Holy Spirit’! Still today we depend not on our strength, but on the Holy Spirit. The effectiveness of a church is in proportion not to our efforts, important though they are, so much as to our hunger for God, and our openness and willingness to co-operate with God. As we celebrate Pentecost again on 8 June, please join me in praying for a new outpouring of the Spirit of God so that Jesus can continue his work in our day.!

June Contact - Vision part 1

There is little to report this month, but Gerald and I have had a very useful meeting with Larry Priest, the architect, early this month, and his office has been busy on our behalf. They are now waiting for tenders to come in, in order for us to be able to sign a finance agreement with Veolia, before they will release the money promised. We still hope to start work in the early summer, and Larry is optimistic. !

!

There is a church council scheduled for Thursday 19th June which will be an open meeting. Everyone is invited to come and hear the latest details – there will be a few practical changes, which is inevitable in work of this sort. We also hope that we will have a start date by then. The church council will be asked to approve the final details; of course those who are not members of the church council will not be able to vote.!

!

Please do your best to support some of our events. Encouraging others is important and placing posters in shops/library etc near you. There is a clear calendar in the corridor, including 2 coffee mornings. Please ask one of the group if you need more information about any event. Help is needed with the coffee mornings in any way you can. The Vision Group will be responsible for both of them, June 14th and September 13th. We aim to have a lot going on at the September one and help in the kitchen, running stalls, raffle etc will be much appreciated. Does anyone have an unusual idea we can try out?!

!

To add to that more help is needed to keep the Saturday coffee mornings going, whether for Vision, church funds or another charity. Lesley cannot do them all! !

June Contact - Vision part 2

We have already had one grant specifically towards the front windows, our main reason being to encourage a young artist at the start of her career. Rose Waits is in just that position. We have now contacted another possible funder with the grand name of The Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass. I thought this very much a long shot, as they look after glass in old churches and items of heritage importance. However the secretary of the trust has, helpfully, rewritten the application data for us, and encouraged us to apply, with no promises, of course. Part of the application needed information about Rose. Having received this I felt that others would be interested in her background and qualifications. This is what she wrote...!

!

‘I was born in and have lived in Sutton Coldfield all my life.!

I attended Boldmere Infant and Junior School and then Plantsbrook School where I won a "Gifted and Talented' programme to make a Fused Glass window. This fired my desire to work with glass so after passing 11 GCSE's I applied to (and was accepted for) Bournville Art College to take a two year BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design. I was the first to pass this course with three Distinctions!!

!

At the age of 18 this allowed me to go to Sunderland University to study a BA with Honours course in Glass and Ceramics.

Sunderland is the top UK university for Glass being based at the National Glass Centre and having the largest kiln in Europe together with the most equipment for students to use. After completing my three year course specialising in Architectural Glass I left with a 2.1 BA Honours degree. My final piece was displayed 6

at 'New Designers' in the Business Centre Islington and it won 'Best in Show' by *Noise Festival.!

!

The final design for Erdington is for 30 individual panels of glass to make 5 vertical columns (each of 6 panels) resulting in a cross on coloured background. Your choice was for fused glass rather than stained glass. I will be using Bullseye glass for your windows, which is an American product and considered the best that you can buy.!

!

My set up for creating the panels is here at my home. I have two kilns and all the tools needed to complete the task over six to seven months. Once we are near to completion of all the panels, a professional Austrian system for fixing the panels to the church walls will be purchased and the glass will be installed.!

!

My future plan is to move over to North Norfolk where I will set up a retail unit and studio to work full time on glass. I hope this will be possible in about a year's time’.!

!

Rose’s father is helping with the business side of the project and plans to go into business with her. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

News from the 177th Cub Pack

In March the Cub Pack visited the Library of Birmingham and the Council House. The weather was lovely so we had our lunch in the 7th floor garden of the library. After exploring the library we walked to the Council House, where the Lord Mayor, Councillor Mike Leddy, gave us a drink and took us on a tour. It's an amazing building (did you know it has a unique air conditioning system?) and Mike told us stories of secret passages, which we got to see, lost diamonds and we even got to hold a debate in the council chamber.!

The highlight for the cubs (and leaders) was being able to try on the Lord Mayor's chain. !

!

The 177th Cub pack recently took part in the revised annual Tame Valley District Cub football day. This year instead of having a knock out football competition we had a skills day, where all the cubs took part in various football training activities. Great fun was had by all, and our cubs are going on to represent the district at the county competition.!

!

Matt Murray, former Wolverhampton Wanderers goalie and now SKY Sports commentator came to coach the cubs and present their certificates.!

Ten Glorious Years!

!

By the time you read this I shall be well and truly retired from the post of Church Caretaker. It does not sound long when you say it quickly and it seems to have flown past but ten years it has been.!

!

Although I did not have any opposition for the post, and the Property Committee were somewhat desperate, I was still told at interview what an unusual and difficult job it would be. It did not deter me and the rest, as they say, is history.!

!

They were not wrong about the job. Apart from the strange, irregular hours I found the sheer volume of physical work quite exhausting to begin with. I remember walking home with difficulty, feeling as though I was wearing lead boots. It was unlike any job I had ever had and it took some getting used to.! !

For those of you who are unaware, the caretaker's job is much more than opening and locking the doors for people. Cleaning, tidying, emptying bins has to be done every day interspersed with taking bookings; setting up rooms for some groups; liaising with users of the building and helping them to overcome difficulties or dealing with their queries; taking payments; or, occasionally, dealing with vulnerable people who sometimes wander in for help. !

!

I have had a lot of support and advice and I am very grateful for that. As I began work in January it was always dark by early afternoon but as the year moved on into spring the car park lights were still coming on at 3.30pm. David Hewitt very kindly showed me where the time clock is in the boiler room and I have not looked back! Another source of help came in the shape of the central 10

heating service engineer who explained how to turn off the heat supply to the radiators during the summer months when only hot water in the taps is needed. My favourite job now is the turning of these valves twice a year when the heating goes on or off! I'll never forget the look on John Price's face when he saw me doing that.!

!

There have been many humorous occasions. I wonder if anyone remembers when I was stuck in the boiler room because the blood donor technicians had blocked the door to the bin store by opening both of the front doors completely. I finally managed to 'escape' by pushing a broom handle through a broken slat on the Bin Store door. Calling for help was futile!!!

!

It was only two years ago that I turned clocks forward instead of back so by the time the Stewards came in at around 9.30 am on Sunday morning, the heating was already going off as in my world it was 11.30 am.!

!

Probably the funniest thing that happened to me was when I was at the side of the building near the MEB station. I was litter picking and feeling a bit disgruntled at the amount of cans and bottles being thrown onto the front of the church when a man walking past finished his can and promptly threw it onto the forecourt.

Without thinking I voiced my dissatisfaction, 'Would you mind picking that up and putting it the nearest bin?' What I hadn't realised was that he couldn't see me. He looked all around and across at the building before picking up the can and walking off with it. I wonder if he thought he had now heard the voice of God, and a woman at that! !

!

There have been a few shocking moments which I cannot put into print - you will have to ask me. Also I have had some exasperating moments, usually connected with the car park. They are too numerous to mention but one, of which I was reminded by Jean Shakespeare, was when I was asking a woman why she was parking on our car park as it is for members and visitors only. She was pretty argumentative about it and finally pointed to my car and complained that I was using two spaces as I was parked over a white line! I don't think she was related to Anthony Griffin!!

!

Despite the odd hours of this job, or indeed because of those hours, I have managed to achieve things in the past ten years which I could not have done in a regular 9 to 5 employment. I initially applied for this job in order to care for my Mum who, at the time, was becoming increasingly frail. I had two and a half years of quality time with her and I will never be sorry for my decision. !

I have also been fortunate enough to have had time to 'walk' three adorable guide dog puppies. Polo and Eric are now working guide dogs and Keith is well on his way to that goal. Perhaps though, my biggest, personal achievement is obtaining a degree from the Open University. There is no doubt that a job with irregular hours was beneficial in that. !

!

There have been a few changes in the role of caretaker. Increasing the number of keyholders was an inspired decision. The appointment of two caretakers is equally inspired and I wish both Tram and Chris well in their new employment. !

I would like to thank everyone who has been wishing me well for the future; for the cards I have received and for the invitations to 'come in and have a cup of tea and a cake with us'. That has got to be a good thing.!

Four Oaks Flower Guild trip to Hidcote

A visit to Hidcote Manor and gardens has been arranged by Four Oaks Methodist Church Flower Guild for Wednesday 2nd July. !

The coach will leave Four Oaks at 9.15 am and leave Hidcote at approximately 3.30/4.00 pm. The cost will be £9.25 for National Trust members on production of a valid N.T. card and £17.75 for non-members. If anyone is interested in joining us please contact Julie Kirk on 352-0789.!

From my Sketchbook

This involved drawing is of Shundraw Farm in the Lake District.

Situated within a network of small, quiet lanes off the A66 between Keswick and Threlkeld, it leads down to the delightful St John’s-inthe-Vale and Thirlmere, the reservoir created by damming St John’s beck to supply Keswick, Lancaster and the Fylde Coast with water.

It is one of the most delightful country roads I know.!

!

I liked the setting of this farm and although I parked on a bend to draw this, I was fortunate that there was a wide verge on which to park myself and the car. It offered me not only the challenge of buildings, but stone walls and the spectacular landscape of fells, tree-lined ditches and becks. The added challenge of scale too, with such an immense landscape presenting itself before me and, of 16

course, the horse - quite a challenge as he wouldn’t keep still and kept finding the grass on the other side of the field more appetising!!

!

Alongside the farm is a footpath leading to St John’s Church, a secluded, inviting and very attractive church built into the hillside, looking for all the world as if it had sprouted, like a mushroom. !

I also visited it with the intention of doing a drawing, but unfortunately, on that occasion I was forced to surrender by the appetite of myriads of voracious midges! (How we artists suffer for our art!) It can be accessed by car via a gated track to the church parking area.!

!

If you are a walker, a beautiful walk beyond the church leads into the hills fringing Blencathra. Unfortunately, it beat me because of its steepness, but it was an awesome sight to stand on the edge of the path and look down into the vast basin below.!

!

Crossing the dam at the head of Thirlmere, the road down the west side offers the walker glimpses across the water through larch, pine, birch and alder, alive with many birdsongs - tits, chaffinches, and in summer chiff-chaffs and willow warblers, along with blackbirds, and where buzzards were heard ‘mewing’ overhead.

On occasions, herons have been spotted fishing in the shallows at the edge. Varieties of ferns grew among rocky embankments as mountain streamlets tinkled their music between them, making the air around them moist and ‘steamy’ as they cascaded down the mountainside.! !

A climb up Hause Point, a rocky outcrop part-way down this road, offered a spectacular view along the length of Thirlmere, unless shrouded in mist of course!!

!

On some of my walks along this road, I have been surprised by being briefly greeted by red squirrels which always delighted and surprised me, and I would stand stock-still amazed as they continued to go about their foraging.!

!

This road eventually joins the main A591 from Ambleside to Keswick, suddenly transporting the traveller back to reality, among the tourist traffic once more.!

!

But the walk was a wonderful interlude of relative tranquillity, relaxation and enjoyment, among the beauty of this minute sample of the Lake District’s offerings, making one long to return.! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

It was:!

• 65 years ago:- on 8th June 1949 that George Orwell’s novel ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ was published.!

• 50 years ago:- on 12th June 1964 that Nelson Mandela and seven other leaders of the African National Congress were sentenced to life imprisonment for acts of sabotage designed to end apartheid.

(Mandela was released in 1990.)!

• 100 years ago:- on 26th June 1914 that Laurie Lee, British poet, novelist and screenwriter was born. He is best remembered for ‘Cider with Rosie’ – a memoir of his childhood.!

Julian Lloyd Webber

On Friday 2nd May Peter, Moya, Don and I travelled to The Forum Theatre in Malvern. Peter had booked tickets for the four of us to attend a concert given by Julian Lloyd Webber and the English Chamber Orchestra. When we arrived we were a little surprised at the number of people who were hoping to buy a ticket for the evening performance. The queue was massive. !

!

It wasn’t long before we learned the reason for the queuing.

Apparently, Julian Lloyd Webber had made the sudden decision that this would be his final concert. What a shock! The immediate question on our lips was “Why?” It didn’t take long before we discovered the reason. His forcible retirement is due to a herniated disc in his neck which has weakened his right arm. !

!

There was a sudden hush in the audience as the English Chamber Orchestra entered the packed auditorium and took their seats on stage. Then we waited … and waited … and waited in complete silence, the tension growing by the minute. Julian Lloyd Webber eventually appeared to a thunderous applause. He stood calmly in front of the microphone, beautiful Stradivarius cello by his side, and quietly addressed everyone assembled. I can’t remember exactly what he said but I can certainly remember the gist of his short, emotional speech. It was something like this: ‘First I should tell you that you are not coming to a wake.’ (What a great way to ease the palpable tension in the theatre). ‘I am deeply saddened that after this concert my cello will fall silent. I had many plans and I am devastated that I will not be able to fulfil them. I have been 19

privileged to work alongside so many wonderful musicians but now I must move on. Music has meant so very much to me and I want to give back to musicians everywhere some of the knowledge that I have gained over the years. I cannot say any more. I am absolutely devastated and I now need time to reflect.’ With those few words he made his way to the conductor’s podium and prepared to conduct the English Chamber Orchestra. Interestingly, four of the eleven pieces of music played that evening were written

by Elgar, a composer that Julian Lloyd Webber holds in high esteem.! !

For me the most memorable moment of that very special evening was the performance of Vivaldi’s Concerto for two cellos which Julian Lloyd Webber played with his wife Jiaxin Cheng, herself a highly accomplished cellist. This was a master class performance.

At the end, both soloists took their bow to rapturous applause and then Jiaxin kissed her husband before quickly disappearing off stage. This performance was a triumph for Julian Lloyd Webber; his neck pain had frustrated the afternoon rehearsal. !

!

Finally, Julian Lloyd Webber addressed the audience before leaving; He thanked the English Chamber Orchestra, congratulating them on their splendid performance and informing the audience that we will never find a finer leader of any chamber orchestra in this country. He went on to say that music is a language that speaks to everyone, children in particular, and as such it has the capability to “break down barriers and build bridges.” After a few more words he left the stage. The audience rose to their feet and gave this unpretentious man the greatest tribute they could offer … resounding applause.!

!

Julian Lloyd Webber didn’t simply play the cello, he made it sing exquisitely. To use a hackneyed phrase – one door closes and another door opens. Much still lies ahead for this wonderfully gifted man. ! !

Healthy Church

To be more healthy as a church we want to be more energised by faith (rather than just keeping things going), more outward-looking and more intentional about determining what God wants. This was the finding of our Church meeting in April. !

!

Peter Farley summarised the discussions in last month’s magazine (pp.20-21), and we thank him for that. If you share our desire for these things, please come to a meeting on Tuesday 24 June at 7.00 pm where we’ll be looking at how we can move forward in them. !

This is for anyone, not just those who were at the meeting in April.

Also, if you can’t come but have some ideas, please let Rev Paul know before the meeting.!

CAR TREASURE HUNT - for sale !

!

This took place on Sunday May 11th on a, surprisingly, sunny afternoon. Christine and Ian organised it with a lot of time, thought, and research into the legalities of doing this. Twelve cars was the maximum allowed. With 4 or 5 to a car there was a potential for 60 people to take part. We were well within that limit only having five – a few more would have been good – but we had a great afternoon, finishing off with a lovely tea when we arrived back. We were told that it should take about 2 hours, which it did.

I am deliberately not saying where we went, which will be explained at the end!!

!

It is amazing how short a distance we need to go to be out of the city and into lovely rural surroundings, travelling down lanes that I had not been down before. When you are looking for answers to clues you notice things that you would miss otherwise; what do notices tell you, what is the name of that big house, what is the origin of that local name etc... We were given a pack with everything we needed including a ‘panic envelope’!! This was only to be opened if we were hopelessly lost. I think it contained a map and a mobile number. Luckily we didn’t need ours as if you opened the envelope, you lost points at the end.!

!

The main point of this article is to ask if you would like to have a copy of this car treasure hunt pack, for an afternoon out with friends or family. Christine and Ian spent hours preparing the route, the clues and general organisation for it, and we ask for a small donation to the Vision Fund. Also if you think your work, church, club, school, would like to have this for a social activity 23

then speak to Christine, one of the Vision Group or a steward about this.! !

PS Sorry but we aren’t offering the tea at the end, but keep your eyes open for other events with food!!

‘A Generous Life’ is designed to help Christians rethink together what it means to be generous in their local contexts. “Every act of generosity, however small, bears witness to our generous and loving God,” said the Revd Dr Martyn Atkins, General Secretary of the Methodist Church. !

“Generosity can be expressed in many ways, whether through financial giving, dedicating your time to help someone else, or sharing freely your skills and creativity. A Generous Life is a great opportunity to rethink what it might mean for each of us to act generously as disciples of Jesus in our everyday lives.”!

Use a computer? - Guard your eyes

Research from the College of Optometrists reveals that over half of Brits spend around 50 hours a week staring at a computer screen, and says many workers are experiencing eye problems as a result.!

!

Optometrists say that while using a computer won’t permanently damage your eyes, if you don’t take regular breaks and use the correct vision aids for your eyesight, you can strain your eyes, causing headaches, blurriness and focus problems. The College of Optometrists offers the following top tips to keep your eyes healthy in front of a screen:!

• If you need spectacles to look at a screen, make sure you wear them!!

• Blink regularly (when you focus on a screen your reflexes will slow down, tear production will reduce and you will blink less, causing dry eyes).!

• Remember the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes look 20 feet away from the screen for 20 seconds, to give yours eye muscles a break and help increase the blink rate.!

• Keep the distance of the monitor from your eyes between 16 and 30 inches. Most people find a distance of 20-26 inches comfortable.!

• Make sure that the top of the monitor is slightly below your horizontal eye level.!

• Tilt the top of the monitor away from you at a 10-20-degree angle.

This will enable you to create an optimum viewing angle.!
