Minister’s Letter

" Dear friends!

"

With the high point of Easter behind us, it’s worth remembering that the Lord is risen and we are Easter people celebrating his living presence the whole year round! In the 6 weeks immediately after the resurrection, Jesus appeared many times to his followers.

See Acts 1:1-3 and 1 Cor. 15:3-8. Sometimes they were alone, sometimes they were in groups. On one occasion, we are told, there were more than 500 witnesses. They must have been strange days, for people knew he was alive, but often it was a case of ‘now you see me, now you don’t’!!

"

What were Jesus’ disciples doing during this time? We can be sure they were getting used to this awesome new reality, letting it sink in. We may need to do the same - to make time to let the wonder of it sink in:!

"

• that the One who was crucified and died forsaken and rejected • • •

"

was the only-begotten Son of God;! that (as Charles Wesley reminds us) the Immortal died;! that through his death and resurrection we have the forgiveness of sins and peace with God;! that he lives again as the first fruits of the resurrection, the beginning of the new creation.!

If these things ever become ‘old hat’ to us, we need to dwell on them afresh and allow the wonder to return. The implications of Easter are inexhaustibly deep.!

Another thing they were doing, however, is waiting. If you’re impatient (as I am), waiting doesn’t come easily! I don’t think it came easily to them, either: some of them tried to go back to fishing but quickly failed (John 21:3). For what were they waiting? For a further promise of God that Jesus made: ‘in a few days you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit’ (Acts 1:5). The gospel records end and Acts begins with Jesus’ ascension – his ‘enthronement’, his mission-over-and-I’m-coming-home. But there’s a great sense of something about to happen, as when the first pangs of labour speak of an imminent new birth, or as the sky fills with heavy clouds and the air crackles with energy before the storm…. Jesus has returned to the Father, but there is something to be continued, which will be continued through the disciples and continues through us today. The disciples waited and prayed that they might be a part of God’s outpouring (Acts 1:14). We would do well to do the same. !

Vision Project Report - May 2014

" As yet we do not have a date for starting work, but are optimistic that it will be early summer. We are still waiting for tenders from the architect, to be able to sign a financial agreement with the Veolia Environmental Trust. Their system is quite complicated partly because of the large amount of money they pay out. If anyone is interested enough to learn more about this process then please ask Gerald or me – well preferably Gerald!!

Fund-raising is ongoing and details of that, and events to look forward to, are continually updated on the board in the church and in the corridor. As explained in the last Contact, we advertise as much as we can – around the church, in the weekly notices and in Contact. If anyone feels they don’t have the information they should have, then please ask one of the project group. We are only too pleased to answer questions and to know that the church family is taking an interest in their own project. !

When we plan our fund-raising activities, one of our main thoughts is to create as varied a programme as possible, bearing in mind what we feel is generally popular. We would like your ideas of what event you would like to have – possibly something that could be repeated, or a new idea. If you could write this down, and give it in, that would be very helpful.!

The Tuesday Club ran a very successful coffee morning and made over £400, a wonderful result and huge thanks to all of them.

Please could we have more offers to run a coffee morning? Every 5

£1 we raise is very useful, and adds to our funds, which are now at £173,700.!

We would like to thank everybody for continuing to support us on our journey to the World Scout Jamboree in 2015. Your support at our recent Craft sale/Coffee morning and District quiz night was greatly appreciated and we managed to raise £270 at the quiz night alone. We sincerely hope that you will continue to join us on our journey and in particular at our next Coffee morning on Saturday 7th June 10.00 am - 1.00 pm. Refreshments including bacon sandwiches, home made cake and tea and coffee will be available.

Vegetarianism - 'something topped with cheese'

" I read with interest Peter's article in the the March issue and it prompted me to respond. Whilst the vegetarian movement may have gained momentum during the Industrial Revolution it certainly did not begin at that time. The Vegetarian Society was founded in 1847 but a vegetarian diet has been followed for much longer. Prior to the 19th century a vegetarian diet was known as the Pythagorus diet as he and his followers abstained from eating meat and fish for religious, ethical and aesthetic reasons (Wikipedia).!

"

This description is still relevant as many people have a variety of reasons for becoming vegetarian. There are those who who simply do not like meat/fish or who are concerned by unethical practices, highlighted by the recent horse meat scandal. The BSE outbreak, and allergies to dairy produce prompt people to change their diet for health reasons and others find meat too expensive to buy.

Another reason cited for giving up diary products is that humans are the only mammals who continue to drink milk after a young age and we continue to drink milk specifically intended for calves not humans so is not therefore necessary for our health. !

According to the Vegetarian Society a vegetarian 'is someone who lives on a diet of grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits with or without the use of dairy produce and eggs.’ There are categories which define the group further:!

- eats eggs and dairy!

- does not eat dairy products, eggs or use any other produce from an animal (including wool or honey)!

I have often toyed with idea of becoming a Vegan but I think it must be as difficult as the rich man giving up his riches in order to gain access to heaven! Food buying can become a minefield.

Shopping becomes more tedious than usual as label reading is essential. Perhaps as a meat eater you will generally accept that animal products will be used in every aspect of life. The most visible being clothing and footwear. Animal by-products are ubiquitous. They are in toiletries, cosmetics, glue, food colouring, some wines, tennis racquets, buttons, crockery - the list is endless.

Inadvertently all vegetarians will eat something, or use something , they would not buy for consumption at home.!

The key is to follow a healthy, balanced diet. I recently met a healthcare worker who claimed to be a vegetarian. Her diet consisted of toast and vitamin pills! She didn't like fruit or vegetables and had never tried lentils. This example is very extreme. She was not a vegetarian - she just didn't eat meat. There is a very big difference. !

"

There are several reasons why I became a vegetarian. Initially I started to dislike red meat even though I had eaten it all my life. !

I continued to eat chicken and fish but gradually decided I did not need them in my diet. Giving up fish was an ethical decision when seals were being killed because they were eating too many fish. !

I loved fish and missed it to begin with but I have not succumbed.

However, I can relate to Peter's comment about the smell of bacon as it is still a smell I like even though I would not be tempted to eat it.!

I suppose I am an ovo-veg. On the whole I do not use dairy products. Very occasionally I buy cheese or eat it when dining out but I try to buy 'alternatives'. Cheese substitutes are good in recipes. 'Cheese' on toast is fine but it is definitely not for sandwiches! I drink soya milk and use soya cream for deserts. For all baking, and as a substitute for butter, I use soya or non-dairy spread and eggs from free range birds. These are all perfectly good for a healthy diet although soya milk differs widely and I am the only one in my family who likes it in tea.!

"

In view of this, I would challenge Peter's premise that 'the only reason why there is sufficient milk and dairy produce to support a vegetarian diet is that these are the by-products of the meat industry'. Milk is the desired product of the dairy industry whose by-products are the unwanted calves which eventually reach the food chain. Beef cows and dairy cows have very different purposes and belong to separate industries. !

Thankfully, vegetarians are no longer thought of as 'cranks' (oh, no we are not). There are many excellent vegetarian restaurants or vegetarian options on menus. These are becoming more imaginative and now no longer consist of something topped with cheese!!

Favourite Churches

The National Churches’ Trust 60 year celebration.

" The National Churches’ Trust is one of the funders we have applied to for money. While we weren’t successful last year we have been invited to try again with updates. So this is pending. Last year they celebrated 60 years and sent me details of the website of one of their celebratory efforts. In fact our church could have taken part but as I have only looked at the website recently it seemed a bit late, and I didn’t quite understand what to do! However, I thought it was worth flagging this up as it is really interesting, and if you have a spare half hour to look at the website I think you will find it interesting.!

"

The web page is www.favouritechurches.org.uk . Sixty people were asked to choose their favourite church and write something about it. The sixty people are from very varied backgrounds but all celebrities in different fields, from politicians, historians, church figures and TV celebrities. To quote from the article, “their choices are based on a wide range of reasons, from the support given to them by a particular church to the beauty of a building, from childhood memories and family connections, to their faith and celebrations of weddings etc.”!

The range of churches chosen was interesting from traditional picturesque buildings to modern ones and including two different Friends’ Meeting Houses. Brian Blessed chose a Methodist church, and Ian Hislop a Welsh Chapel with a large wall painting of death!

He says he used to find it ‘strangely comforting’. Bear Grylls chose 10

a church in Kensington ‘made beautiful by the people inside’. He continues, “this church is full of normal, hard working but humble people who know their need for God’s help.”! !

When our project is finished we hope that Erdington Methodist Church will have been made more beautiful. Are we able to say that the people inside will add to that beauty, and even surpass it?!

Vacancy: Project Research Assistant

St Peter’s Saltley Trust is seeking a Research Assistant to work with the Trust director in a research project on ‘What Helps Christian Disciples Grow?’ The research will explore church members’ understandings of Christian discipleship and what helps/hinders them in growing in faith and its application to everyday living.! !

The post is full-time, fixed term for 18 months (beginning October 2014), though with the possibility of limited extension subject to the progress of the project. Candidates should have good research skills (to at least undergraduate or equivalent level and ideally to postgraduate level), a passion for the Church’s work in education and learning, and the ability to work on their own initiative.

Salary: £25,000 pa.!

The Grit in the Oyster

" In her Easter message, the President of the Methodist Conference has spoken of Mary Magdalene and the many misunderstandings about her story. The full message follows: !

"

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb‌(John 20:1)!

"

Mary Magdalene was the first witness of the empty tomb, the first to be commissioned by the risen Christ. What can we, today's disciples, learn from Mary Magdalene? What would she say to us? Perhaps it would be something like this‌!

"

The grit in the oyster - that's me.!

"

I have a name and a story, precious to me - and to him. But for many that is not enough, or unvarnished it is too much.!

"

So I, Mary of Magdala - Mary Magdalene - have become many things.!

"

I have a name and I was with Jesus. He healed me, he restored me.

Some talk of 7 demons - a good, complete, holy imperfect number. !

I was troubled - a great load was lifted from me and I followed him.!

"

They have assumed many things about my demons and, wanting more than my name, more than my discipleship, they have woven stories around me, wrapped me in their own ideas and fears and prejudice.!

"

I became a prostitute - a more comfortable image for them - dressed in scarlet, a modern-day Eve (she too was laden with assumptions and fears). The fallen woman - well, I was fallen like you but do not try to name my sins for your comfort.!

"

To some I became weeper and foot-washer, disturber of the feast.!

"

I would have washed his feet I would have let down my hair for his comfort but that was the service of another - I would not deprive her of it, that unnamed other Mary - she has her part too.!

"

I became extravagant anointer of feet or head - reprimanded and remembered, surrounded by the sweet smell of abundant love.

That was not my part - not then. Though I am myrrh-bearer my jar was unbroken.!

"

Remove the layers, woven from the imagination and supposition of others, and what is left?!

"

You are left with me, with Mary of Magdala!

"

I was healed.!

"

I was with him - with him right to the end - the bitter end.!

"

I waited through the long hours leading to the cross.!

" I stayed at his feet as he died.!

"

I followed him to the tomb and saw him laid there.!

I prepared spices and ointments - finding my comfort in the certainty of the ritual; Anticipating the final service, the anointing.!

"

I went to the tomb where certainty was stripped from me and the first glimmers of truth were revealed in the dawn.!

"

I was commissioned.!

"

I was not believed.!

"

The simple truth: I was healed, accepted, with him to the end, myrrh-bearer, commissioned, apostle to the apostles.!

"

But the plain truth is too much for some - the grit in the oyster.!

"

Healed, accepted, commissioned.!

That is the truth.!

"

That is immeasurable - that is precious.!

"

I will fight for it.!

"

Perhaps this is what Mary would say. Perhaps she would challenge us to hear the good news of resurrection afresh this Easter. Perhaps she would challenge us to really live as those who know that God's love extends to all people. Perhaps she would ask 18

us to listen the voices of those who struggle to be heard because others regard them as unworthy.!

"

Perhaps, Mary Magdalene would say these things. But most of all, most importantly and most urgently, I believe she would say, "Christ is risen!" She was healed, accepted and commissioned to share the good news - so am I - so are you.!

"

Will you accept the commission? !

"

Come share our Easter joy!

That death could not imprison,!

Nor any power destroy,!

Our Christ, who is arisen!!

You can become a Christian in a moment, but not a mature Christian. Christ can enter, cleanse, and forgive you in a matter of seconds, but it will take much longer for your character to be transformed and moulded to his will. It takes only a few minutes for a bridegroom to be married, but in the rough-and-tumble of their home it may take many years for two strong wills to be dovetailed into one. So when we receive Christ, a moment of commitment will lead to a life-time of adjustment.!

" After our annual church meeting last month we listened to a presentation from Michele Simms the District Evangelism Enabler.

She posed us seven questions about the life of our church. We were asked to rank our answers on a scale of 1 to 6 for how well we thought our church was meeting each question. An answer of 1 suggests that we did not think we were doing very well with that particular question. An answer of 6 suggests that we are probably doing much better. The questions are set out in the table below. !

" There were 29 people at this part of the meeting and each person’s answers were put into the above combination table. The strokes in each box of the table represent the number of people who 20

answered in that way. To try and make some sense of our answers each answer was graded, with an answer in box 1 being worth 1 point and an answer in box 6 worth 6 points. Therefore the maximum number of points available for each line on the combined results table was 174 (29 people x 6 points). Grading the answers in this way accentuates the positives and therefore makes it easier to differentiate scores that indicate a thriving or a failing church. The table then goes on to record the percentage of maximum score that we, as a church, thought we achieved for each particular question; the higher the percentage the better the assembled members thought that we were doing. !

"

What was interesting about our answers was that, by and large, they fell into two groups. For those questions about faith, A – C we scored less than those questions, which related to actions, D - G. That is to say we are happier doing rather than thinking and praying.!

"

It would be interesting to compare these results with other similar churches. On that afternoon there was a fair sample of our church membership and therefore our answers should, similarly, be a representation of our church. !

"

I suspect that Paul will be revisiting this in the coming weeks and months.!

Foodbanks

" Leaders of the Methodist Church, Baptist Union of Great Britain and United Reformed Church have responded with concern to the latest figures from the Trussell Trust. The statistics show that 913,138 people received three days’ emergency food from Trussell Trust foodbanks in 2013/2014 compared to 346,992 in 2012/2013. Read the Churches’ response here.!

The All Party Parliamentary Group on Hunger and Food Poverty has launched an inquiry into hunger and food poverty in the UK, co-chaired by the Bishop of Truro. It will soon be taking evidence on the issues as well as holding regional hearings, the first of which is in Birkenhead on 23 May 2014.!

"

Through the Joint Public Issues Team (JPIT), the Methodist Church continues to engage with and support churches who provide foodbanks to link their faith and life, and to challenge the structural causes of poverty. If you and/or your church is involved with a foodbank, email Matt Collins who is co-ordinating this work.!

"

JPIT is also preparing resources to help churches reflect on foodbanks, and make the links between faith, practical and political action, so keep an eye out for that.!

Take a spin on the wheel of generosity

" People are being encouraged to spin an online Wheel of Generosity and commit to small acts of kindness as part of a new campaign from the Methodist Church.!

"

A Generous Life is designed to help Christians rethink what it means to be generous in their local contexts.!

"

“Every act of generosity, however small, bears witness to our generous and loving God,” said the Revd Dr Martyn Atkins, General Secretary of the Methodist Church. “Generosity can be expressed in many ways, whether through financial giving, dedicating your time to help someone else, or sharing freely your skills and creativity. A Generous Life is a great opportunity to rethink what it might mean for each of us to act generously as disciples of Jesus in our everyday lives.”!

A range of resources (including a special one-off issue of ROOTS magazine) is available here to help congregations explore their vision, commitment and generosity within the local church and its community. The resources are suitable for use at any time of year, but are ideal for Aldersgate Sunday (18 May), when churches remember the day in 1738 on which John Wesley experienced confirmation of his salvation by the grace of God. !

As part of A Generous Life, people are also being encouraged every Thursday to say 'thank you' on Twitter to those who have made a difference in their lives, however great or small, using the hashtag #thankyouthursday.!

MRDF relaunches as ‘All We Can’

" Following a service of thanksgiving for 70 years of Methodist relief and development, Westminster Central Hall hosted an audience of current and past Presidents of the Conference, supporters and colleagues for the announcement of the charity’s ambitious future plans.!

The new name All We Can reflects the charity’s commitment to do all it can to tackle poverty and takes its inspiration from words attributed to John Wesley:!

Christian Aid Week

11th to 17th May 2014!

Christian Aid Week is seven amazing days of fundraising, prayer and action against global poverty.!

"

We ask our supporters to give their time, money and voices to make an impact in some of the world’s poorest communities. The money you raise enables us to continue transforming lives around the world.!

"

This year’s Christian Aid Week focuses on the human cost of conflict. In some of the world’s toughest places, sea re standing with people affected by conflict and violence, helping them ot get the basics they need and to rebuild their lives. We also work to tackle the causes of conflict.!

"

By coming together, we are demonstrating that God’s love is infinitely greater than hatred and violence. We can help to give people across the world a life free from fear.!

" Peace

Lord Jesus ‘Peace be with you’ was your constant greeting.!

And so we pray for the peace that brings freedom out of fear,! hope out of grief, dignity out of violation.!

Lead our sisters and brothers out of the valley of the shadow of death to a place of still waters, green pastures and restoration.!

And may your peace be in our acting, our giving and our praying.!

The First Day of Spring

During my teaching career I have collected a number of memories that I will never forget. Here is one of those memories. !

"

How well I recall one particular morning assembly in a Junior School where I taught. The Head Teacher decided that the theme for the assembly would be The First Sign of Spring. He launched into this subject by asking the children the obvious question, “What is the first sign of spring?" Scores of hands shot up accompanied by the customary shouting of ‘Sir, sir!' Sensible answers came thick and fast e.g. trees start to blossom, new green leaves begin to open out, bees start buzzing, the days become warmer, etc. All excellent answers yet all of them greeted with a solemn shake of the Head Teacher’s head indicating ‘No’. It reached the point when fewer hands went up until finally there were none. I was puzzled. The truth is that I simply couldn’t think of anything else which could possibly be a sign of the onset of spring. At last we were all enlightened by the Head Teacher. “Now I will tell all of you what the first sign of spring is” he said with a very sombre expression on his face. I listened intently. What ever could it be that hasn’t already been mentioned? “The first sign of spring” he continued, (wait for it!) “is sweaty feet!” Well … I nearly fell off the piano stool in total disbelief. I looked around at other members of staff and all of them, without exception, were trying desperately hard to stifle their laughter.
