" Dear friends!

‘Many are saying, “Oh, that we might see better times!”’!

It sounds like a documentary on the economy, and it jumped out at me recently as something many would say today. Even if the economy is recovering, too many are still depending on food banks and charity; too many are having sleepless nights because of money worries. Actually it’s a quote from nearly 3,000 years ago!

It’s Psalm 4 verse 6.!

"

We might say that Christians shouldn’t be bothered about material things. After all, didn’t Jesus tell us not to worry about them, but instead to store up treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:19-21)? Didn’t he live a simple life, uncluttered by possessions and with ‘no place to lay his head’ (Matthew 8:20)? Of course that’s true, but it’s only part of the truth. He also had a great deal to say about how we use money and material things, and some of his earliest followers had money that they used to support him (Luke 8:3). The key thing, it seems, is to make sure that God - not our money or possessions rules our lives. And money and possessions do have a way of taking over, rivalling God for our devotion. Jesus said, ‘you can’t serve God and mammon’ (Matthew 6:24). !

"

Money alone can’t fix our deepest problems, and money can’t buy the things we need most. !

"

It pays us all to reflect on the part money and material things play in our lives. Do we allow them too much control? How much are we driven by the desire to get more money, or to have more stuff?!

"

Yet I certainly don’t want to say that money doesn’t matter. That’s only true for those who have enough of it to be carefree! But we have to rule over it, not let it rule us.!

"

Psalm 4 continues, !

‘You have given me greater joy than those who have abundant harvests of grain and new wine. In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.’!

"

The psalm recognises that peace, contentment and rest come not from lots of ‘stuff’, but from trusting God, resting in him. Contrast that with Luke 12:15-21. There, Jesus warns us that ‘life does not consist in an abundance of possessions’, and goes on to tell of a man with ‘abundant harvests of grain’. Read those verses and see why he couldn’t ‘lie down and sleep’!!

"

So let’s hope and pray for better times, and that all benefit from them. But let’s remember that there’s more to be had from trusting the Lord than there is from a thriving economy.!

The Vision Project - Feb 2014

The amazing news at the moment is that our funds (cash in the bank and pledges) stand at £163,000 – boosted considerably by the promise by the Veolia Environmental Trust of £56,000. This enables us to start on the first stage of the work. Before that happens we have to sign a financial statement with Veolia and receive tenders, which the architect has in hand.!

"

Grant applications continue, as does our own fund raising for which we need your help. The Tuesday Club is running a coffee morning on March 29th, and is busy preparing for that. So please support them in whatever way you can.!

"

Our next major event is to welcome MIDLAND OPERA on April 26th to give a very enjoyable and entertaining evening – having heard and seen them twice this is no empty promise! This is a dual-purpose event, as they need to raise money for themselves in order to be able to continue putting on their annual opera at the Crescent Theatre.!

"

Please support this event and ask your family, friends and colleagues to come. Tickets £8 are available now from the Vision group. There are also flyers for you to take and give out. If you know a useful location to display a poster I can let you have one. !

Healthy Church

In the last magazine I said we would be looking at the health of the church to help us to grow and to determine carefully what the Lord’s will is.!

Michele Simms, our District Evangelism Enabler, is coming to meet with the stewards of Erdington, Stockland Green and Witton churches on 18th March to introduce the Healthy Church Review to us. !

"

After that we shall be seeking the views of as many people as possible on a range of issues, so that everyone who wants to can have a say and so that together we can discern the mind of Christ.

We’ll work out how best to do that when we have met Michele.

Do1NiceThing Lent Challenge

Lent is a time of preparation around remembering the forty days Jesus spent in the desert praying and preparing for his public ministry. It is the period from Ash Wednesday to the events of Easter weekend - a time traditionally of giving up - but this year can we also encourage you to GIVE OUT?!

Do1NiceThing is about loving and serving others and the wider community. It is about being the change, making positive steps to make life better for others (and yourself in the process!). The ideas are generally very simple and don’t require much thought or preplanning. If you don't like one of the ideas, do something else! !

Vegetarianism

The other morning I was listening to the radio, very early, and I heard of an item to be discussed regarding the connection between vegetarianism and Salford.!

"

The vegetarian movement grew out of the ills of the Industrial Revolution, the resulting health reforms and the growing tradition of Victorian philanthropy. In 1809 the Reverend William Cowherd left the Swedenborgian New Church and formed his own Bible Christian Church in King Street Salford. Later others were opened in Ancoats and Hulme. The members of these churches had to take a vow not to eat meat. This stemmed from two causes. Firstly a new more romantic ideas about the place of animals in nature and secondly a belief that the eating of flesh had a brutalising effect upon people and therefore abstinence might lead to an improvement in public order. Apparently Cowherd’s mantra was “if God had intended us to eat meat it would have come in an edible form�.!

"

Cowherd died in 1816 and Joseph Brotherton, who went on to become Salford’s first MP, took up the leadership of the church. In 1832 his wife published the first ‘vegetable diet’ cookbook.!

"

Meanwhile in 1838 near Ham Common, James Pierrepont a wealthy merchant founded the Alcott House Academy. This was based upon a school opened in America by Amos Alcott, the father of Louisa May Alcott, author of ‘Little Women’ and ‘Little Men’.

The school was pioneering, avoiding punishment, with the aim of perfecting the human spirit. To this end it supported a vegan type diet, before the concept was invented. The school published a journal called ‘The Healthian’ and the April 1842 issue contains the first printed use of the word ‘vegetarian’. !

"

On the 8th July 1847 the school organised a conference of likeminded people, including James Simpson from Salford, which led to the formation of the Vegetarian Society. Mr Simpson became the first President. The rest as they say is history.!

"

Famous people who were members of the society included; Isaac Pitman, of shorthand fame, Dr T.R.Allison , of bakery fame, Mahatma Ghandi, George Bernard Shaw and Bramwell Booth.!

"

I sometimes wonder about being vegetarian, however I am not sure that I could always resist the smell of grilling bacon. Also there is the logistical point that the only reason why there is sufficient milk and dairy produce to support a vegetarian diet is that these are the by-products of the meat industry.!

Birmingham Synod Secretary

The Birmingham Synod are looking for a Synod Secretary to join the District Leadership team and share in the collaborative leadership of the District, to work with the Chair, the Leadership team and the Policy Committee in the formulation of strategy and policy in the District’s life, and to work with others in its delivery.!

"

The Secretary would need:!

• Good communication skills, (written and spoken)!

• Experience of minute taking and preparation of reports!

• a knowledge of the Methodist church.!

• an ability to think strategically. !

• to be IT literate!

"

The post is open to lay people.!

"

Particular Responsibilities: !

• To be a member of the District Leadership Team and the District Policy Committee!

• To attend District committees as agreed by the District Policy Committee!

• To convene the Chair’s nomination Committee, see below.!

• To attend the twice yearly connexional meetings for Synod secretaries, usually in London in the autumn and at Conference.!

• To act as a conduit between the Connexion and the District!

• To arrange and administer the Representative Synod, including elections to Conference.!

It is the policy of the Birmingham District that the Synod Secretary is a member of the Methodist Conference, which meets for six days at the end of June. !

Street Child World Cup

Methodist children and young people are encouraging local churches across the Connexion to help raise £30,000. This will sponsor two teams from Nicaragua – one male, one female – to attend the Street Child World Cup in Rio de Janeiro this year.

In November three young Methodists visited Nicaragua, where they met with local projects through Methodist World Church partners. Andrew Topping, 18, a member of Hucclecote Methodist Church in Gloucester, was one of them:!

“Our time in Nicaragua was largely spent with an organisation called Casa Allianza, which does fantastic work both in the capital, Managua, and throughout the country as a whole. The organisation is sponsored by the Amos Trust and is also responsible for the task of putting together the boys and girls teams who will participate in the Street Child World Cup. In our short time with Casa Allianza we witnessed firsthand the crucial work that they do both for the street children as individuals and also the communities from which many of them come.!

"

“Being a keen football player myself, I jumped at every opportunity to play alongside those who would be going off to the tournament with the support of the Methodist Church. What I noticed was that the boys and girls in Nicaragua play differently to the way I have experienced people playing in England. The ball is passed about much more in the Nicaraguan game, meaning that everyone gets a good share of the ball. It is a similar style to that of Spain or Barcelona. Consequently there is greater trust amongst 19

players, which means that those who are not as gifted receive the ball just as much as those who are clearly very skilled. I found this heartening and refreshing, not only was it an effective way to play the game but also a communal and team-spirited way. It seemed to reflect an attitude of collective and social responsibility that came across so strongly amongst those I met in my visit to Nicaragua.”!

The Bristol District has also been busy raising money in a variety of ways, including £660 in donations to see the district chair, Ward Jones, dressed in a onesie and gunked!!

Sian Davidson, a One Programme participant based with the Oakhanger Project in Cheshire, raised £120 taking part in the Liverpool Santa Dash, which is a 5k charity fun run around Liverpool city centre.!

Noah’s Ark or Noah’s Coracle?

It is hardly surprising that the weather over recent months has prompted me to think of the story of Noah’s Ark. I imagine I’m not the only person to think along these lines!!

"

Briefly, God told Noah a disastrous flood would destroy all living things on earth so he instructed Noah to build an ark large enough to accommodate a male and female of every living creature plus a few human beings. This was a colossal undertaking which Noah succeeded in fulfilling. !

" Recently, new evidence has come to light which challenges the biblical account of the Ark. It appears that Noah's Ark was round, much like a massive coracle made from reeds, apparently about two thirds the size of a football pitch.!

"

Over several years, Dr Irving Finkel, A British archeologist whose expertise lies in studying clay tablets, has investigated information held on one particular clay tablet discovered in Iraq. It is approximately 4000 years old and minute engravings which cover 21

its surface reveal detailed instructions describing how to build an enormous round boat capable of surviving a great flood. In other words, it’s a very different Ark from the one that Noah built. The text is written in cuneiform script which, according to Wikipedia, “is one of the earliest known systems of writing distinguished by its wedge-shaped marks on clay tablets”.!

From the photographs that I looked at, I really couldn’t see anything vaguely resembling script on this cracked lump of clay the size of a mobile phone. At best, I could view a series of roughly sculpted horizontal lines. How anyone could decode the text is beyond my comprehension.!

"

I wonder if the information, researched so diligently by Dr Finkel, influences our thinking about Noah’s Ark. His discoveries are remarkable and maybe … just maybe … the Ark was built in the form of a coracle. In Genesis 6 – 8 we read a detailed account of this very well-loved story which was written more than a thousand years after it first appeared on a clay tablet – a real bolt out of the blue! Clearly, there’s still plenty to research and discuss. !

Whatever any of us may think about the possibility that the Ark was, indeed, a huge coracle, there is an undeniable truth that will remain unchanged. The wonderful biblical story of Noah’s Ark will forever be exactly the same one that we have read, studied, performed and loved.!

If you are involved in groups which meet in the church building then we would love to hear about what you do - and remember, don’t just do this once - we would like regular updates (perhaps once a quarter or twice a year).!

We ask you to remind us, as we drink, of what we can do! for those for whom water is less friendly.!

St David (Dewi Sant)

guiding the Church in Wales through turbulent times!

" On March 1st Wales celebrates its patron saint, David - or, in Welsh, Dewi or Dafydd. He is indisputably British, and is revered wherever Welsh people have settled. As with most figures from the so-called ’Dark Ages’ (he lived in the sixth century), reliable details about his life are scarce, but there are enough for us to form a picture of a formidably austere, disciplined and charismatic leader, who led the Church in Wales through turbulent years and fought tenaciously for the faith. It’s likely that he was strengthened in his ministry by time spent in Ireland, where the Church was stronger and more confident. Early records tell of a meeting of Irish church leaders with three ‘Britons’, as they were described, among them ‘bishop David’. His mother, Non, is also celebrated as a saint in Wales, where a number of churches are dedicated in her name. !

" That he founded a monastery at Menevia, in Pembrokeshire, seems beyond doubt. It later became the site of St David’s cathedral and the settlement which is now the smallest city in the United Kingdom. From Menevia David embarked on preaching and teaching missions across Wales, and probably beyond. His eloquence was legendary. At a famous Synod of the Church, held 25

at a Carmarthenshire village called Brefi, he preached passionately against the Arian heresy - indeed, so passionately that he was (according to some accounts) immediately named as archbishop of Wales. The village is now known as Llandewi Brefi - brefi in Welsh is a hillock, and legend claims that it appeared miraculously in order to provide the eloquent bishop with a pulpit. !

" His monks avoided wine and beer, drinking only water. Indeed, he and they lived lives of rigorous austerity and constant prayer, in the manner of the Desert Fathers of the Eastern Church. The date of David’s death is disputed - either 589 or 601. It wasn’t until the twelfth century that he was generally accepted as the patron saint of Wales, and pilgrimages to St David’s were highly regarded in the following centuries - including two made by English kings, William I and Henry II.! !

It’s traditional for Welsh people to wear daffodils on St David’s Day (Gwyl Dewi Sant in Welsh) - but there seems no particular reason for it, beyond the fact that they tend to make their early Spring appearance round about his day - oh, and they look nice!!
