Uit die Hoof se kantoor With the blink of an eye, we came to the end of a very busy but exiting 3rd term. As you will notice in this issue of our Whaletails, the 3rd term was filled with very exiting activities: a concert, Grandparent’s Day, Spring Day (is spring really here?) and celebrating Heritage Day. In spite of all this, the curriculum continued full steam due to teachers and assistant’s creative planning and very hard work.They really know the art of how to balance everything in order to achieve success.

I salute you!

Next month is Teacher Appreciation Month with World Teachers’ Day being celebrated on 05 October 2023.

Whilst most learners will be on holiday and only the aftercare open, children and parents won’t be able to show their appreciation for the important role that teachers play in our children’s lives. To all the amazing teachers of Hermanus Pre Primary / Aftercare, you are teachers with a passion to care, to love, to make a difference in children’s lives. The words on the beautiful picture that I received on my birthday are so true: “Our fingerprints don’t fade from the lives we touch”! I want to thank you for your hard work, commitment, and continued dedication.

From the Principal's Office We have also shared a lot of very proud moments this term. Congratulations to Michelle Swart. She is in Rustenberg to compete in the South African Championships for Performing Arts during the week of the holiday. We are anxiously awaiting the results and as we know her and her team, they always go for gold!!

Some of our aftercare children also excel in gymnastics. Anné Lingenfelder, Chloë Fredericks and Lilah Miller will represent Western Province at the South African Championships. Well done girls!

2. Cognitive Development: Adequate nutrition supports brain development, which is crucial during early childhood. Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, iron, and vitamins contribute to improved cognitive functions, memory, and learning abilities.

3. Energy and Stamina: Children need a balanced diet to have the energy and stamina required for daily activities, including school, sports, and play.

4. Immune System Health: Nutrient-rich foods boost the body's ability to fight off infections and recover from illnesses faster.

'n Opwindende 3de Kwartaal in die Tweet Klassie Juffrou Simoné Die 2 tot 3 jaar klas het: Hul eerste konsertoptrede gehad op 24 Augustus 2023

Hul eerste broodbak lessie……

Die les was aangebied deur die assistente waar hulle kon sien hoe ‘n mens deeg aanmaak om ‘n brood te bak. Nadat die brood gebak was, het die maats die geleentheid gekry om self botter, konfyt en kaas op hul sny brood te sit. Hulle het dit baie geniet.

Hulle het ook hul eerste lessie van hoenders en eiers gehad…

Elke kindjie het ‘n gekookte eier gekry om sy eie eier af te dop. Die maats het gesien hoe ‘n eiertjie binne, ‘en selfs buite die dop gaar word. Hulle het ook gesien hoe ‘n eier lyk voor dit gaar gemaak word.

Kuikens het ‘n dag saam met ons skool gegaan. ‘n Hokkie was in die klas waar maats heeldag kon sien wat die kuikens doen en selfs luister na die geluidjies wat hulle maak.

Nog ‘n paar opwindende dae wat ons gevier het was, Ouma en oupa dag, die haelkorrels wat geval het en selfs ons Erfenisdag wat ons ‘n groot Bokkedag van gemaak het.

Dis so groot voorreg om te sien hoe die kleintjies groei en ontwikkel!

Fynmotories Juffrou Enrika

Die ontwikkeling van fynmotoriese vaardighede verg tyd en oefening. Dit is ‘n belangrike vaardigheid om aan te leer, want 70% van die take wat jou kind op skool sal moet verrig, vereis fynmotoriese vaardighede.

Wat is fynmotoriese vaardighede?

Dit is die beheer van die klein spiertjies van die lyf wat jou kind in staat stel om ‘n verskeidenheid materiale en gereedskap akkuraat te beheer, hanteer en manipuleer. Die twee hande se spiertjies moet ook kan saamwerk, aangesien baie aktiwiteite twee hande vereis.

Hierdie is slegs ‘n paar van al die aktiwiteite wat ons in die klas doen om fynmotoriese vaardighede te ontwikkel.

Die Wonder van Klei!

Voordele van klei: Verbeter fynmotoriese ontwikkeling As kinders die klei rol, uitdruk met vorms plat druk met die hand, dit sny ens. ontwikkel die spiere in hulle hande.

Verbeter kinders se skryfvaardighede As kinders met klei speel en klein stukkies afbreek en optel, kan dit hulle potloodgreep verbeter.

Wakker kreatiwiteit en verbeelding aan Klei kan enige iets voorstel van diere, blomme, trekkers en kos. Ontdekking vind plaas wanneer kleure gemeng word en kinders besef dat die kleur verander.

Dit het ‘n kalmerende effek Veral die druk- en rol-aksies met klei kan kinders help om te ontspan.

Ontwikkel hand-oog koördinasie ‘n Verskeidenheid van vorms, rollers en ander klei-gereedskap kan ingespan word om hand-oog koördinasie te bevorder.

Maklike klei ... in 'n japtrap!

Bestanddele: 1 k koekmeel ½ k sout 1k water 1E kookolie 2t kremetart voedselkleursel

Metode: Meng bestanddele in ‘n kastrol en verhit oor ‘n lae hitte vir 5 min.

Roer deurgaans en moenie oor klonte bekommer nie. Mengsel is aanvanklik baie klam, maar raak mettertyd stywer. Bewaar in ‘n plastieksak of lugdigte houer.

Playing and Learning with Building Blocks Teacher Hettie

The importance of educational toys helps the child to develop in many areas for e.g. fine, gross motor skills as well as creativity.

Playing with various blocks like lego and wooden blocks, will help the child in the future when starting school.

There are three main play types that are really important for the child.

There is explorative play. This will give the child time to explore the blocks like the same shapes and colour.

There is role play. The child copies the real world. They can choose to build a cake and pretend to have a birthday party.

There will be building play. Ask the child to start assembling the blocks by building a tower. The child will continue to build and take them apart, which trains their motor skills and their cognitive skills. This will enable them to build from small to a bigger build.

“Heritage Day is a public holiday in South Africa that celebrates the country’s rich and diverse cultural heritage, traditions, values and norms. It is observed on 24 September every year, and it is a day to honour the many cultures that make up the population of South Africa.”

Elkeen moet op dié dag sy eie kultuur, geskiedenis en kultuurgeskiedenis in ere hou.

Hierdie jaar op 22 September was die gees en opwinding in ons skool ‘n belewenis. Dis natuurlik te verstane dat springboktruie, en selfs springbok rokkies, die gewildste drag van die dag was.

Gesiggies is mooi versier met ons pragtige landsvlag “tatoos”, landsvlae is geverf en versier en veral die Graad R klasse het ons pragtige Nasionale Volkslied uit volle bors gesing. Die volgende aanhaling is so waar: “South Africans take great pride in their national anthem because it is a unifying tool, inclusively pulling together all interests. It conveys a powerful prayer message that commands both awe and respect when reciting.”

24 September is natuurlik in die volkstaal ook bekend as “Nasionale Braaidag”. Wors is gebraai, en ouers het wonderlik bygedra om al die tradisionele kos te stuur.Die kinders het die melktert, koeksisters en papballetjies so geniet.

As ons as opvoeders die drang by ons klein kindertjies begin aanmoedig om Suid-Afrikaners se gedeelde erfenis in ere te hou, respek en omgee vir mekaar te vestig, is daar hoop vir ons pragtige “reënboog nasie!”

Lord we ask You to protect our nation Intervene and end all conflicts Protect us, protect our nation Protect South Africa.

Ons Jaarlikse Skoolkonsert Die hoogtepunt van die Derde Kwartaal!

Jaar na jaar is hierdie gebeurtenis ‘n hoogtepunt! Nie net vir die leerders en juffrouens nie, maar ook die families wat kom kyk. Elke juffrou doen soveel moeite om die maats voor te berei vir die groot vertoning. Daar word behoorlik beplan en kostuums word spesiaal gemaak en gekoop. Ons wil graag van hierdie geleentheid gebruik maak om net weer elke mamma te bedank wat gehelp het met die mooiste dekor. Sonder julle sou hierdie pragtige konsert nie ‘n sukses kon wees nie. Dit maak Hermanus Pre-Primêr trots om te weet dat ons sulke staatmaker-mammas aan ons kant het! Ons wil ook dankie sê aan elke liewe ouer wat bygedra het om te verseker dat elke juffrou hul maats mooi kon aantrek en grimmeer. Dit was definitief ‘n spanpoging.

Hierdie jaar het ons die konsert in twee verdeel. Die eerste aand, Maandag 21 Augustus, was dit die juniors se kans om te dans.

Hierdie klein lyfies het hul goed van hul taak gekwyt. Dinsdag 22 Augustus en Woensdag 23 Augustus was dit die seniors se beurt om konsert te hou. Die maatjies het dit so geniet en ons is ongelooflik trots op hierdie supersterre wat twee aande in ‘n ry so mooi gedans het!

This event was a resounding success, leaving both parents and educators astounded by the talent and dedication of these little performers.

One of the most beautiful aspects of preschool concerts is witnessing the transformation of shy, reserved children into confident performers.

For many of these children, it’s their first experience in front of an audience. The supportive cheers and applause from parents, teachers, and peers serve as a powerful confidence booster, fostering a sense of self-assuredness that extends beyond the stage.

Dans en musiek is ‘n groot en belangrike deel van ons skool se kurrikulum. Daar is soveel voordele wat dans inhou vir jong kinders.

Terwyl maats oefen en hulself geniet, word sekere vaardighede aangeleer en bevorder. Leerders se algehele fisiese selfvertroue, selfbeeld en selfmotivering verbeter, algemene en sielkudinge welstand verbeter, visuele en ouditiewe geheue word bevorder. koördinasie, uithouvermoë, buigsaamheid, balans en ruimtelike bewustheid word ook bevorder.

The success of this preschool concert serves as a reminder of the incredible potential that young children hold when nurtured and given the opportunity to shine. It was a testament to the hard work and dedication of both the teachers who guided them and the parents who supported their young stars.

Hierdie jaar se konsert was ‘n ongelooflike mooi vertoning wat gesorg het vir die mooiste herinneringe wat ons altyd sal koester.

Social skills are of utmost importance in pre-primary education because they form the foundation for a child's social and emotional development. These skills play a crucial role in a child's overall well-being and future success in school and life.

Here are some key reasons why social skills are essential in pre-primary education: Building Relationships: Pre-primary is often a child's first experience with structured social interactions outside of the family. Developing social skills helps children form positive relationships with their peers, teachers, and other adults, creating a sense of belonging and security.

Communication: Social skills encompass communication skills such as listening, speaking, and non-verbal communication.

Learning how to express thoughts, feelings, and ideas effectively is vital for academic success and future interpersonal relationships.

Conflict Resolution: Pre-primary classrooms are environments where children learn how to resolve conflicts and disagreements. Developing skills like problem-solving, compromise, and empathy at an early age can prevent the escalation of conflicts and foster a more harmonious learning environment.

Pictures of Overberg Teacher Michelle The Department of Education places a lot of emphasis on the four art forms: music, dance, drama, and visual art.

Through art, children grow emotionally, physically, and academically. They uncover new talents, express themselves, and develop valuable skills for the future, all while having fun.

If there is one thing that the children at our school love to do, it is to draw, to paint and to create objects with boxes or anything they can lay their hands on. Teachers at our school always strive to link interesting artwork with the theme of the week.

While doing the theme “Our Town: Hermanus” one of the favourite sea creatures they love to draw is always our very special whales. Especially now that it is high season for whales in our town.

When the Grade R teachers received the news about an art competition “Pictures of the Overberg”, it was with great enthusiasm that they entered some of our learner’s amazing artwork.

Great was our excitement when we received the news:Three of our learners emerged as prize winners in this competition and were invited to a gala event which took place at the Caledon Museum. Cara Marchio, Amira van Wyk and Erinn von Zeuner received their certificates and a surprise package at this special event. We are all so proud of them as the standard of artwork displayed was of a very high standard, and to be a winner at this event just shows how amazing they are!

Parents, encourage your child to draw, to create, to use their imagination, to think “out of the box”. Praise every little effort. Give them time to talk about their art, show your appreciation and remember: It is not the product that counts! Being busy, designing and creating, that is where the learning and development takes place.

So out with the coloring books! Only use age-appropriate pencils, pastels, crayons, koki’s and colorful paint. Allow them to get messy and have fun!!

Die fases van teken by kinders Juffrou Anke Hoekom is teken van die uiterste belang gedurende die voorskoolse jare?

Die tekenaktiwiteit bou kinders se fynmotoriese vaardighede.

Dit ontwikkel oog-handkoördinasie.

Dit ontwikkel kreatiewe uitdrukking deur vry te teken.

Teken is die voorvaardigheid vir die skryfvaardigheid.

Dit bou aandag en konsentrasie.

Dit ontwikkel kognitiewe begripsvermoë.

Dit laat kinders toe om hul gedagtes op papier te sit – dis amper soos om ‘n opstel te skryf!

Hoe ontwikkel tekeninge?

Dit begin by krabbel!

Van vyftien tot agtien maande oud begin babas om merke op papier te maak, wat vinnig ontwikkel in krabbels, vertikale en horisontale lyne en veelvoudige strepe en sirkels.

Vir babas gaan teken eintlik daaroor om oorsaak en gevolg te leer en hul vermoë om dinge te laat gebeur. Dit het min te doen met die skep en verteenwoordiging van hul wêreld en meer te doen met die geniet van hul bewegings en die uitwerking daarvan. Hul krabbels stel hulle in staat om te leer oor die eienskappe van voorwerpe, materiale en gereedskap soos potlode, penne, verf, kryte en papier.

Van twee jaar oud af is die fase bekend gekontroleerde krabbel. Spontane sirkelvormige lyne of heen en weer lyne en kolle word gemaak. Op hierdie stadium begin peuters ontdek dat daar ‘n verbintenis is tussen die bewegings wat hul maak en die vorms wat op die papier verskyn. Hulle sal begin om die bewegings doelgerig te herhaal.

Driejariges begin om basiese vorms in hul tekeninge te gebruik soos hul fyn motoriese en oog- handkoördinasie verbeter.

Hul begin sirkels en vierkantige lyne te teken, kruise, kolle, vorms wat lyk soos die letters T, V en H is sigbaar.

Drie tot vierjariges begin met eerste menstekeninge. Die paddavisagtige figure word geteken met ‘n kop en ledemate wat uit die kop groei. Teen hierdie tyd kan kinders begin vertel wat hul krabbels voorstel. Meer as een kleur word gebruik vir die krabbel, maar die gebruik van een kleur geniet dikwels voorkeur.

Wanneer vierjariges teken, begin patrone sigbaar word en word benoem. Tekeninge sluit vierkante, sirkels en reghoeke in.

Hul probeer om driehoeke, diamante en kruise te teken.

Vierjariges se menstekeninge sal ontwikkel van ‘n kop met bene, na koppe wat oë bevat, omdat oogkontak so belangrik is vir jong kinders. Hulle teken nie wat hul sien nie, maar wat hul weet en hul sal detail bylas wanneer dit vir hul belangrik word.

Teen vier en ‘n half jaar oud sal verskillende vorms saamgestel word om basiese voorwerpe te skep. Die eerste vorms wat kinders maak vorm mense, maar sal later huisies of sonne voorstel.

Vyfjariges se prente het baie meer detail en toon tekens van kreatiwiteit. Menstekeninge sal nou detail soos hare, hande en vingers, voete en ‘n lyf bevat. Hulle kan diere, huise, voertuie, bome, plante, blomme en reënboë teken.

Vyfjariges teken spontaan en tekens van hul agtergrond en belangstellings sal sigbaar word. Hulle teken wat hul weet.

Hulle sal ook maklik hul prent benoem nog voordat hul begin teken het. Die voorwerpe wat geteken word, sal dikwels nog in die lug sweef, omdat ruimtelike oriëntasie nog ontwikkel. Hul sal nog hulself as die middelpunt van die tekening beskou, wat ouderdomsgepas is.Gedurende die vroeë jare is dit belangrik om te fokus op die proses van kreatiewe tekening, en nie op die produk nie. Dit is nie nodig om kinders formeel te leer teken nie. Die beste manier om hulle te leer, is om hulle blootstelling aan materiaal en tekengereedskap te gee en hulle vrylik te laat uitdruk. Soos hulle groei en volwasse word, sal hul tekeninge meer gedetailleerd word en die wêreld rondom hulle weerspieël.

Vrydag 08 September was ons skool geseënd met ‘n heerlike sonskyn dag, te midde van ‘n paar baie onverwagste koue fronte. Gebede is vehoor want dit was: “OUPA EN OUMA DAG!” EN ONS GAAN PIEKNIEK HOU” In al die klasse is daar met groot opgewondenheid versierings gemaak, en spesiale plakate het oral by deure verskyn. Die klasse is so mooi versier, alles om net vir oupa en ouma te verseker hoe spesiaal en geliefd hulle is.

“Kleinkinders bring die vreugde in ‘n Ouma en Oupa se harte.”

“As jy ‘n kleinkind se hand vashou, is dit soms soos ‘n stukkie van die hemel wat jy vashou.”

Menigte trane het gevloei as spesiale liedjies in die klasse gesing is en gediggies met oorgawe voorgedra is.

Die opgewondenheid van die oupas en oumas was voelbaar. Gou is hulle betrek by verskeie aktiwiteite in die klas. Daar is koekies versier, handafdrukke is gemaak, fototjies is in raampies gesit wat kleinkinders saam met oupa en ouma versier het, ruikertjies is met tafels vol blomme gemaak en met blink ogies aan ouma gegee.

Daarna het almal ‘n plekkie op die speelgronde gesoek en die heerlikste piekniek kos is uitgepak.

Daar was byna nie ‘n plekkie oop waar nie kampstoele en piekniek komberse was nie.

Almal het saamgestem dat hierdie ‘n dag weereens harte warm laat klop het. Dis ‘n voorreg om ‘n oupa en ouma te hê en ons sal hulle verseker elke jaar met groot liefde verwelkom.
