The axis of the Earth is increasing its tilt relative to the Sun, and the length of daylight rapidly increases for the relevant hemisphere. The hemisphere begins to warm significantly, causing new plant growth to "spring forth," giving the season its name.

In recent decades, season creep has been observed, which means that many phenological signs of spring are occurring earlier in many regions by around two days per decade.

Spring in the Southern Hemisphere is different in several significant ways to that of the Northern Hemisphere for several reasons, including: there is no land bridge between Southern Hemisphere countries and the Antarctic zone capable of bringing in cold air without the temperature-mitigating effects of extensive tracts of water; the vastly greater amount of ocean in the Southern Hemisphere at all latitudes; at this time in Earth's geologic history the Earth has an orbit which brings it in closer to the Southern Hemisphere for its warmer seasons; there is a circumpolar flow of air (the roaring 40s and 50s) uninterrupted by large land masses; no equivalent jet streams; and the peculiarities of the reversing ocean currents in the Pacific.

I remember a song from my childhood:

‘If you’re happy and you know it, clap your , if you’re happy and you know hands… it and you really want to show it, if you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands!”

And?... Does it take you back? Are you clapping your hands? No?... Mmm… Don’t worry, me neither. That reminds me, I haven’t taken my happy pill yet.

What makes you happy? Don’t over-think it. Just say the first thing that comes into your mind.

Did you have trouble coming up with something – sommerso, off the cuff? You are not alone. It is such a simple thing. Happiness. It doesn’t cost money, or at least it shouldn’t really, but why is it so elusive? Unfortunately, dear reader, I don’t have the foggiest, but when one is searching for the meaning of life… there is always my one go-to place… the Internet. Jip. I suppose you expected something deep and meaningful like yoga or a spiritual retreat… and yes of course both have merit, but a woman’s gotta go with what a woman knows. Besides, the Internet doesn’t judge. Plus, it gave me 643 million answers in 0.92 seconds.

This is what the experts have come up with. (Keeping in mind that every expert is also trying to flog their self-help books at the same time.) I have added a few of my own pearls of wisdom – for free. (I reckon I’ve reached the age where I can recognise good or bad advice… and I also know what happiness is supposed to look like and boy, do I know what it DOESN’T look like.)

Money doesn’t make you happy. Ja, ja… we all know that one. Well, go talk to any poor person and they will tell you that is a load of crap. So it’s all a matter of perspective. You can only look at the life of Diana. Beautiful, rich, married to a Prince. Desperately unhappy. I wouldn’t want her life for all the money in the world. Such a cliché, isn’t it? Shall I spell out the obvious? She had all the money in the word… another person who falls into the same category would be the current Mrs. Trump. How happy can that woman be?

Married to the most powerful, wealthy idiot in the world.

So stop moaning about your finances, stop thinking you will be happy if only you can land a rich husband or trade in your current partner for a richer version. Money from another source besides good old-fashioned work usually comes with strings attached or hectic interest rates. On the other hand, if you live in absolute squalor, can money make you happy? If some benefactor gave you a house you would be better off, more comfortable for sure, but would you be happy? I don’t know cause I’m not you. I don’t know what’s that special thing that makes you go all mushy inside… Even you don’t know. Unless of course you could answer my earlier question within 5 seconds flat.

Do not fret: help is at hand. Just in time for summer, you can develop habits to increase your chance at happiness.

And guess what is number one, right at the top of the list?

Here’s a clue. It’s quite ironic in my case as it’s my ultimate pet hate. You may recall that I have explained at length how just walking to the fridge from the TV-room is way too much movement for this couch potato. Yes, you guessed it: Exercise! Get those flabby thighs moving and you too will reap the benefits of all those feel-good hormones. Cheap highs – courtesy of your body. I’m amazed someone hasn’t bottled it and sold it to us. Serotonin – The Happiness Hormone – now in tablet form for easier swallowing.

Oh come on… Smile, darling – it will make you feel better/ happier. I kid you not. Scientifically proven. Way less effort that jogging on the beach. And imagine how happy you’re going to be if you’re jogging AND smiling. Just remember to put your teeth in first. But on the other hand, if a toothless wonder came jogging up to me and then flashed his/her gums at me I suppose it would make me smile… or maybe I would run away screaming. On the upside, I would then get the much needed exercise I need to make me happy… Win-win.

Number three on the Internet Get happier list: Spend money…. (and here’s the secret) on someone ELSE. No, I didn’t make this up so that you can spend money in Amulet. Besides I’m constantly urging women to spend money on themselves – instead of only buying that special gift for some acquaintance, when they actually want it for themselves. No one says you can’t be kind to yourself. Even better, buy a gift for yourself and your friend. Suffice to say, retail therapy is right up there with physical exercise when it comes to making the human race happy. (I know which one is my top priority. Hey, I’m not shallow, just being honest.)

Meditation anyone? Insert Yoga, spiritual retreat, pilates, spa bath – whatever floats your ducky. Even if you have to get up earlier while the family and the rest of the world is sleeping… or find a quiet spot at the beach during lunch time. Clear your mind of the clutter. (I suppose it’s just another form of exercise – for your mind) When my bleary-eyed husband stares at me in the mornings he claims he’s meditating, but I know he’s simply trying to wake up. (And waiting for his coffee) And that’s also okay. We all have our unique ways of zoning out. Just don’t try it in the car.

Walk during the day. (?) I’m confused.

Where does the ‘Exercise is number one’ mantra fit in. Does that mean I have to exercise AND walk during the day?

Doesn’t walking count as exercise. This is not making me happy, people. I’m getting a bit anxious. Who came up with all these happiness habits – some fitness guru trying to sell his latest self-help book, DVD and fitness App? Moving swiftly along…

Figuratively of course…

Eat better, have a good night’s sleep. (Now those I can do) Keep a journal. Find a beautiful book, not just sommer any exercise book. You want your thoughts of gratitude to be written up in a thing a beauty. Because beautiful makes one happy. I know it makes me very happy. It makes most women happy. The odd man too. To be surrounded by beautiful stuff, listening to lovely music that wants to make you sing or dance… you know what, I’m feeling happier already… because tomorrow is my day in the shop, my ultimate Happy Place. You are welcome to come and join us and feed your soul.

Inspiration is my gift to you, because that makes me happy.

Happiness is fleeting. Death is forever.

Have a good life.

TELESCOPES & When you look at the night sky, or through a telescope at some distant star, you are seeing light that was emitted prior to its arrival at Earth.

That may sound obvious, but it’s important. That light was emitted by a star and has traveled a long way, and a long time, to arrive at Earth and be collected in your telescope.

Light is pretty cool. For one thing, we know how long it takes to travel through space, and that doesn’t change… 2.9 million kilometres every second. Another more subtle thing about light, is that it can tell you where it came from and where it’s been. Remember using a prism to break sunlight up into colors? The spectrum of colors or wavelengths present, as well as those not, will tell you how it was made, the sort of star it came from or other reactions that emitted the light. If the light passes through something then the spectrum and/or its intensity will change, that can tell you about the cloud or dust that the light passed through. And, as star light moves across the Universe, the spectrum shifts in a predictable way. Measure that shift and you can tell how far away (or how long ago) it started!

Light comes in a wide range of wavelengths.

Gamma Rays, X-Rays, Ultraviolet, Visible, Infrared and Radio waves are actually the same thing, they are just different wavelengths of light.

Scientists call this the electromagnetic spectrum.

For 27 years NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has been taking dazzling images of galaxies and stars and planets in visible light (also ultraviolet and near-infrared too). In October of next year, NASA and the European Space Agency will launch the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). It will be 7.5 times larger than the Hubble and it will look at space in the infrared.

JWST will be looking for the dimmest objects in our Universe and the infrared light that is arriving here from very far away. In fact, the JWST will look at light from 10 billion light-years away!

When we look at a galaxy of stars 10 billion lightyears away, we are seeing those objects as they were 10 billion years ago!

Telescopes are amazing time machines.

The Hubble Space Telescope can see back to the early beginnings of our Universe, about 700 million years after the “big bang.” This is the period of time when the galaxies were just finishing forming. But the James Webb Space Telescope will be able to see even further back in time. Roughly 300 million years after the big bang, when the first stars were being born.

Scientists can see even further back in time using radio waves. The Square Kilometre Array, currently being built on the Karoo in the Northern Cape can see the oldest light in the Universe, just 300,000 years after the big bang! We’ll get pictures of a time when the lightest atoms had just been formed and the entire universe consisted of a fog of about 75% hydrogen and 25% helium. This is the stuff that everything else was made from!

Every time we look at the night sky or through a telescope we see our incredible Universe as it was. Amazing!

S n O BaBo an Ongoing Issue

aboons, baboons everywhere. Not only can they be found in Voelklip but now also in Onrus. They have been spotted below the Onrus Main Road close to the caravan park.

My property has on two occasions been visited by baboons. Once in the garden when my dogs were inside and once on the boundary wall deterred by my dogs.

The response from law enforcement is that there is no money to assist and that the problem is our own to deal with. And we know from the ongoing Voelklip saga that the municipality is not in the means to assist.

After coming to terms with the fact that the baboons are here to stay – after all it is us humans that have intruded on their natural habitat and not the other way around. I decided to equip myself to avoid an unnecessary encounter with the baboons. But of course no action taken can fully guarantee that I will not encounter a baboon, so what to do if I should encounter one.

Fact: Baboons have been a protected specie in the Western Cape since 2000.

It is therefore illegal to feed; poison, trap, hurt or kill a baboon by driving with the intent to kill; hunt by means of shooting at baboons using a pellet gun, catapult, bow-and-arrow, stoning, setting your dog on them, or use a weapon of any kind in order to injure a baboon; or to keep a baboon in captivity without a permit.

Baboons are attracted to food and if they know that they will get easy rewards they will return to the source over and over again.

So where does that leave us… with not much choice but to exercise some kind of baboon management.

After some investigation I came across the following sent out by the City of Cape Town.

Use it or don’t use it It is up to you!!!

Baboon Management: What can you do to assist?

Waste Management: I have purposefully excluded this part as we do not currently make use of baboon proof bins. Actually no bins can be seen at homes in Onrus as the municipality does not supply nor encourages the use of bins. So bags are put out on collection days for not only baboons but also dogs and humans to scratch in.

General Guidelines •

Please do not leave any food, especially fruits, in plain sight of baboons.

• Keep windows and doors locked if baboons are in the vicinity.

• Warn neighbours when baboons are in the vicinity.

• Sliding doors must have night bolts installed to prevent baboons lifting them off their tracks.

• Windows, particularly top-hung ones, must have a latch at each end of the opening edge so that a baboon cannot pull the frame and break the glass.

• Install burglar bars on windows usually left open (the gaps must be smaller than 8 cm, including sides/tops of bars) • Please keep your dogs inside the house or away from the baboons when they are in the residential area.

• Do not leave dog food outside.

• Please do not leave bird feed in your garden unsupervised. Only feed birds when you are able to keep an eye on the situation and remove the bird feeder when you are not around.

• A juvenile baboon can enter via a cat flap.

• Do not plant fruit trees, vegetable gardens or make compost heaps unless they are in a locked caged area or surrounded by electric fencing.

• Plant indigenous, as baboons love exotic/alien plants.

• Do not leave food on display in your homes. E.g. fruit bowls in a window sill.

• Place TV antennas in the ceiling.

• Please drive slowly through the residential area.

IF CONFRONTED BY A BABOON •

In your garden or house, stand still and remain calm. Sudden movements will make it act defensively • Back away slowly and do not block its escape route • Be determined, decisive and confident when driving a baboon off • Spray the baboon with a strong stream of water as they hate water. Have a water pistol in the house and a hose pipe ready in the garden • Keep pets out of the way DO NOT • Try to snatch back anything from a baboon ─ it will fight to hold on to food • Threaten infants and juveniles, as adults, in particular the alpha male, will protect them with aggression if necessary BINS AND BABOONS ─ YOUR OPTIONS (For areas in Overberg with bins) •

Secure both latches with padlocks or clips at all times • Secure your bin lid with strap, rope or chain • Knock a pole in the ground and attach your bin to the pole. The bin must be raised off the ground • Store your bin in the garage or in a caged area • Lie the bin on its side ─ locked Baboons in Your House It can be intimidating to find a baboon in your home. Your first reaction may be one of fear and anger, remember that the baboon is simply looking for food and does not intend to hurt you (unless you provoke it, try to harm it, or try to prevent it from accessing your food). Below are a few steps that you can take to remove the baboon while minimizing the danger to any people in the house and to your property.

1. It is very important to remain calm. The calmer you are, the calmer the baboon will be. Panic will lead to the baboon panicking and becoming aggressive and/or inadvertently cause harm to a person or to your property. Keep in mind that this is a stressful situation for the baboon as well, and that it may panic if you discover it or move towards it too quickly. The baboon is a trapped animal and may become unpredictable.

2. Avoid eye contact, as baboons may find this threatening.

3. Do not try to take anything away from the baboon.

Let it keep the food or whatever else it may have picked up. If it is not food, the baboon will eventually drop it. Do NOT try to give the baboon food or tempt it away with food. And please DO NOT set your dog on the baboon - that is a recipe for disaster for both species. It is simply too dangerous to attempt to interact directly with a baboon in any way when it is in your home.

4. Identify the nearest exit that the baboon can use to leave your home. Make sure that neither you nor any of your family members are blocking this exit.

Open any additional doors or windows as possible exit points for the baboon. The lack of a clear exit route might cause the baboon to panic and become aggressive.

5. Encourage the baboon to leave. Which methods are most effective will depend on the level of habituation of the baboon (i.e., how often it has interacted with people): • • •

clap your hands bang together two pots spray the baboon with water from a water pistol or a spray bottle

Whatever you decide to do stay safe and remember there are much worse offenders out there than the baboon.

“Madiba het op ’n keer gesê: “As jy met ’n mens praat in ’n taal wat hy verstaan, praat jy met sy kop. As jy met hom praat in sy moedertaal, praat jy met sy hart.” Daar is elf amptelike tale in Suid-Afrika en nege daarvan is Afrikatale.

Hulle kan rofweg in twee groepe verdeel word – die Ngunitale en die Sothotale. As jy ’n taal in die een groep kan praat, sal jy ook die ander tale van die groep verstaan. Dit is byna soos Afrikaans en Nederlands. Ons kan nie noodwendig Nederlands praat nie, maar ons verstaan dit wel.

Die tale in die Ngunitaalgroep (isiZulu, isiXhosa, isiNdebele en SiSwati) word hoofsaaklik in die Oos-Kaap, WesKaap, KwaZulu-Natal en Mpumalanga gepraat. Die tale in die Sothotaalgroep (Sesotho, Setswana en Sesotho sa Leboa – ook bekend as Sepedi) word hoofsaaklik in die Vrystaat, Noord-Kaap, Noordwes, Gauteng en Limpopo gepraat. Setswana word natuurlik dan ook in Botswana gepraat. Tshivenda en Xitsonga (ook bekend as Sjangaan) is nie deel van die Nguni- of Sothogroep nie, maar hulle deel woordeskat en grammatika met die twee taalgroepe.

Die twee tale word hoofsaaklik in Limpopo gepraat.

Hoekom praat ons van isiXhosa en nie van Xhosa nie? Dit is tegnies wel meer korrek om na Xhosa te verwys en dit is hoe die meeste van ons die tale se name leer ken het. Ons verwys tog nie in Afrikaans na English of Deutsch as ons van Engels of Duits praat nie. Tog is dit soms ook goed om na isiXhosa te verwys, want die woord isiXhosa verwys na baie meer as net taal. Dit sluit ook die kultuur van die taal in en dit is wat ons ook nodig as ’n mens ’n taal wil bestudeer.

Daar is die persepsie dat ’n mens as volwassene moeiliker ’n taal aanleer as ’n kind. Dit is egter ’n mite. ’n Volwassene leer net gewoon anders as ’n kind. Dit word deur talle navorsers beaam. Stefanie Schramm skryf in ’n 2010-artikel in Zeit Wissen (’n Duitse tydskrif) dat die brein van ’n volwassene nog vormbaar is en dat daar nog ná puberteit selle gevorm word.

Volgens navorsers help meertaligheid jou om Alzheimer se siekte vier jaar langer weg te hou. Meertalige mense is ook beter besluitnemers. Blykbaar gee poliglotte ook versigtiger geld uit. Hulle kan glo beter onderskeid tussen

kredietkaartgeld en werklike geld tref. Meertaligheid verskerp ook die vermoë om meer take tegelyk te doen.

Dit help ook om brûe tussen verskillende taalgemeenskappe te bou. Ek wil jou daarom uitdaag om hierdie paar isiXhosa-woorde aan te leer en te kyk watter verskil dit in jou eie omgewing kan maak.”

The windows to the soul The eyes it is said, are the windows to the soul.

We look to a person’s eyes to really communicate on a deeper level. Eyes can tell you so much about a person and their emotions. But eyes age!

As we age we lose the fat pads that keep the eye orbit near the surface and our eyes tend to fall back into the socket. The bony orbit of the eye is slowly resorbed and the hole thus enlarges which further exacerbates the problem. The skin over the eye thins and we lose muscle volume over the temple area which makes us look drawn and old. Crows feet appear in what was laughter lines. Our eyelids sag and sometimes even block our peripheral vision. We begin to lose the hair over our brows. On the lower eyelid, the fat may bulge thru weak muscle leading to puffy eyes. But….not all is lost; there are many tricks and procedures which we can use to effectively hide signs of aging or even reverse damage done.

Dropped eye brows: if the brow has dropped over time the following can help to lift them. We can strategically place filler under the brow which immediately elevates the brow. Botox in the upper outer quarter of the eye can give a natural looking brow lift and of course threads in the forehead can effectively stimulate collagen and lift the brow. Threads placed in the brow are done after a small injection of local anaesthetic. The threads are placed into the skin and over time, although you may see the lift immediately; collagen will be stimulated and the skin over the forehead lifts and tightens which effectively lifts a dropped brow. A brow lift does not have to be a very expensive procedure and 4 threads of R300 each can often do the trick.

Eyelid drooping: we always differentiate between dropped eyebrows and drooping eyelids. If the eyelids are drooping we can use a PLEXR machine to do a non-surgical eyelid lift. The PLEXR is a probe which burns tiny dots onto the skin. As we are doing this we actually see the skin lifting and shrinking. There is downtime with this procedure as there may be swelling for 3 days and the little black dots burned onto the skin will fall off spontaneously in around 5-7 days. But what you are left with is beautiful fresh tight pink skin. I was convinced when a colleague who is an ophthalmologist working in Harley Street and with 3 fellowships in plastic surgery; told me she uses PLEXR extensively to avoid eyelid surgery in her practice. It is highly effective! Lower eyelids also respond extremely well. So say goodbye to drooping eyelids permanently!

The other ways to tighten skin around the eye, which is not as aggressive, but requires 3-4 sessions would be to use the fractionated laser. This state of the art laser shoots heat and light deep into the skin to stimulate collagen and resurface the skin. One can also opt for radiofrequency a tightening warm massage type of therapy repeated around 6 times. Add carboxy therapy and the results improve exponentially. Carboxytherapy is a technique of blowing carbon dioxide under the skin which is a potent stimulator of collagen and brings blood to the area which releases growth factors.

Temples which have lost muscle volume and give our upper face an old appearance can be easily remedied. We would use a firm contouring filler to lift in that area. It’s a simple procedure in trained hands and merely involves one injection on each side. This procedure will give instant lift in the eyelid area.

My favourite is working on dark circles in the lower eyelid. Tired of being told you look tired? Dark circles or tear troughs are formed because our bony orbit has a groove in it which deepens with time.

Also because skin thins, the dark veins and muscle show thru the skin. The treatment is the well known “Eyeboost”. With a light watery filler we can instantly lift dark circles and tired eyes. The filler is placed onto bone and very superficially into the skin. The results are immediate and astounding! @ z i u 2017 Pub Q From the beginning of time, people have asked questions like how, who, when and what. Bitten by the bug of general knowledge, we’ve kept inquiring through the ages, and in the last few generations the infection has gone viral. Oddly enough, the tables are turned, because we don’t get to ask the questions any more, we have to answer them. But that is now…

Back in the old days, various magazines had quizzes with answers on the last page – upside down, so you couldn’t sneak a cheat-peek. Springbok Radio and the BBC had panel shows with highly sharpened pencils from the intellectual brain-boxes of the time.

Even Chappies bubblegum wrappers had vital information to broaden one’s intellectual horizon. Early TV picked up the reins, and soon we were hooked on shows like Vlink Dink, Biltong and Pot-roast, or Pick a Box among others.

Later, as the virus spread through the internet and social media, new platforms were created to test our knowledge. These days, TV has a variety of quiz shows where

contestants can phone a friend, spin a wheel of fortune, or be told rather rudely that they are the moldiest mushroom in the bucket. Goodbye.

Thankfully, quiz games have become more accessible. One doesn’t have to sit at home shouting at your TV anymore. No, you can go to a restaurant and shout, eat, drink, and be merry while making new friends at the same time. It’s called a Pub Quiz.

During quieter periods – July and August - one such event had Fusion Restaurant above the old harbour buzzing every Thursday evening for eight weeks. Groups of six to eight contestants would gather into teams with dubious names like Tequila Mockingbirds, Quizzical Looks, Radio Rats and Hoof Hearted.

At around 6.30, after a few attempts to control the excitement, Mic Long, Quiz Master extraordinaire and internationally famous radio jock and casino boss would lay down the law.

No cell-phones, no bad language, and no throwing steak knives at each other. After distributing answer sheets to each team, he’d begin

with question one of ten, in the first of four rounds. After each round, answers were collected, marked and read out to thunderous applause and hooting. Once the mayhem had subsided, fresh drinks were ordered and round two would begin. And so the evening would progress till the end of round four at about 8.30.

Final scores for that evening were announced and carried over to the following week, and contestants would shuffle home with a few more pearls of wisdom in their necklaces of knowledge.

Everyone wonders why these popular pub quizzes aren’t held more frequently, so here’s the good news – they will be. Penny from Figgs in The Village has made her restaurant available, so we’ll keep you informed of when and how.

Other venues should shine up and realise what added exposure and turnover these quizzes create.

For his labours, Mic, our intrepid QM and golfer received a fabulous prize of a round of golf for two – plus golf-cart at Arabella. Well done guys and thanks.

The ‘old’ real 4x4 days Twenty or so years ago 4x4s were mostly used by farmers in rugged areas. It was not seen as a recreational vehicle. Versus some of today’s offerings, the Defenders, Land Cruisers and Patrols of yester year were rather daunting to drive. They were work horses.

The 4x4s were rugged, nearly indestructible, apart from an oil leak here and there... The 4x4 transfer box for high and low range, was simple.

Using either leaf or coil springs, they had huge suspension travel to allow for traction. The 4x4 system was simple with center differential lock and manually ‘lockable’ front hubs.

Then driving style required more momentum and speed, definitely not too slow, in order not to get bogged down. Given that it was seen as a ‘manne’ thing, for many, the ego monkey ruled the roost. No wonder then that after many a 4x4-day, some of the vehicles ended up in the ‘car-hospital’. No obstacle was too deep or too steep, all had to be conquered.

One of ‘today’s driving tips is: As slow as possible, but as fast as necessary. The emphasis is on slow.

With most of today’s 4x4s the list of off-road driver aids are nearly endless. Differential lock for both the rear and front wheels. Traction control and ABS – originally intended as a safety feature to prevent vehicles from skidding and getting out of control. Now it inverts. It stops spinning wheels that have lost traction and send power to the wheels that have traction. This is

probably the most under estimated feature of a modern 4x4.

With differential lock or traction control engaged the vehicle can basically crawl through/over the toughest of obstacles. Keep in mind that there are applications where selecting ‘diff lock’, or leaving traction control on, will make the 4x4 un-drivable.

Other modern driver aids include hill descent control, hill hold assist, adjustable air suspension, different driving modes – sand, gravel, rock, mud and water to name a few.

Some think that it is simply a case of selecting the applicable mode and the car does the rest, as if the car thinks for you.

These driver aids changes the vehicle’s response to the terrain it is encountering. If the driver’s interpretation of the terrain was wrong, causing him to select the incorrect driving mode, he may end up in far greater trouble and distress.

‘AWDs’, all wheel drive vehicles, which are great for safer driving on wet and slippery roads, but may prove to be no good off-road. Real 4x4s with center differential lock, evenly distribute power between the front and rear axles. Low range is essential grade 3 and worse terrain.

(The Amarok is the exception). If you want the on-road comfort and handling of a sedan, a SUV is perhaps a better choice. If you need a workhorse and load capability a 4x4 bakkie or double-cab is the answer.

Some old hand off-roaders think that all the driver aids spoil the fun of really driving a 4x4.

I agree. Most of today’s 4x4s, due to design aesthetics and providing a more comfortable ride, simply do not have the axle travel of the older ones. Hence, without ‘diff-lock’ and the traction control system, they will simply go nowhere.

The choice of a 4x4 will largely depend on what it will be used for and how often. There are

Vir nog een is dit ’n provinsiale wedstryd op sy geliefkoosde veld en vir sy vriend wat in die Springbok-span teen Nieu-Seeland speel is dít rugby op die hoogste vlak.

Rugby is a game that is played in and about space. This space consists of two dimensions, namely depth and width. If a backline player has these two dimensions available, he can or should be able to express himself as an artist of the game in that situation. If the space is not available, then something has gone wrong before the ball has even reached him.

SA coaches have lost the ability to coach individual players in their individual skills per position to enable them to create opportunities for themselves and their team. This does not mean (my example of the scrumhalves) that they are bad rugby players. They are not – but it means that they are very bad scrumhalves.

Every position has specific skills necessary for that position to enable the player to play creatively in that position.

There are individual skills as well as positional skills. A fly-half that cannot kick with both feet is limited to playing to one side of the field. To play against a limited player is easier than to play against an unlimited player. Coaches should be aware of that and focus on their players to prepare them to become unlimited. The argument could be yes, but he played 100 games for the Boks. My question will then be: ‘But have you got any idea how good he would have been if he could kick with both feet’?

Coaching at school level is much more important than coaching at provincial level because to coach the detail of scrumhalf play you must be able to convey the detail of actions in words that children can understand and execute accordingly.

I have noticed that a great deal of detail at school level is missing, which means that the future of rugby in SA has a lot of talent on the way up, but that the detail is limited. For the senior coaches to rectify this aspect of skill level in my mind is questionable because I have not seen it in 10 years in SA at top level.

Forensiese oudits moet jaarliks op unies gedoen word en waar geld sonder behoorlike korporatiewe bestuur bestee word en moet dit terugbetaal word deur die verantwoordelike beamptes wat voor die voet uit hul poste ontslaan moet word. U sien – onbehoorlike besteding van iemand anders se geld en diefstal is gevaarlik na aan mekaar. Rugby moet baie mooi na sy hardverdiende geld kyk. Dit is belangrik vir die ontwikkeling van die spel.

A day at Lord’s Cricket ground:

A boyhood dream

A

s a young boy I always wanted to go and see one sporting event in particular. For most South African boys it would be a Rugby World cup final, or a South Africa vs Australia One Day International at Wanderers or Newlands. For me, it was the idea of witnessing the opening day of the first test in a test series between South Africa and England at Lord’s Cricket ground, and boy did it live up to its expectation. The whole journey for me and my wife to go to Lord’s started a bit more than a year ago when the dates for the SA tour was announced. I went and had a look at how to book tickets and was a bit disappointed to find out that it was a lottery system, but supposedly the Lord’s test tickets are 3 – 4 times oversubscribed. I entered the lottery in December and after almost 2 months, at the end of January, I received a SMS from my bank that the cost of the tickets were debited!! Needless to say, we started planning the trip to London!

When you first arrive at Lord’s, like every big sporting arena, the sheer size of it leaves you in awe, but if you enter from the north side the media centre stares you in the face which; although it still looks out of place and is directly opposite one of the oldest cricket pavilions in the world (the Member’s Pavilion) still seems to fit in perfectly. Our tickets were on the Mound Stand directly on a good right hand batsmen’s cover drive. The view we had was of the member’s pavilion and when I sat there I was immediately star struck. The grass, perfectly manicured, the seats on the pavilions, perfect in size and quite comfortable, the whole area spotlessly clean and the spectators, most of the men in blazers and chinos, most of the ladies in summer dresses. My immediate thought was, this is not Newlands!

We started watching the pre-match rituals and popped a nice bottle of French champagne (Lord’s is the only cricket ground in the world where more champagne is consumed than beer)

when play started, South Africa lost the toss and were asked to bowl. Philander and Morkel put up a good show in the first session, handed South Africa 3 wickets, and South Africa took the upper hand ever so slightly.

Whilst watching the game I struck up a conversation with two elderly English gentlemen and we immediately went to the topic of how beautiful the Lord’s experience was. My reply was: “ I have always wondered why, with the backdrop of Table mountain, Newlands was rated the second most picturesque ground after Lord’s. Sitting here now, I fully understand why. “ Later we decided to go and explore. Lord’s is almost more of a day out and an experience than it is about the game itself. Almost! There are 2 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Bars with hundreds of people all splashing out £70 per bottle. You hear a bottle popping every few seconds! The food available from the main dining area includes a Smoked Salmon Platter (utterly delicious), Cheese Platter or Mixed Cured Charcuterie! There is even a Wine Bar. Not to take anything away from our beloved Newlands, but this is a far cry from Castle Corner, Samosas and Gatsby’s!

We stayed till a few overs after the 5th wicket fell after tea and South Africa looked like they were going to take the day. We reluctantly went home due to the fact that we had to relieve the babysitter looking after our daughters but luckily we left then, as after that the English Batsmen took the SA bowlers to the cleaners!

Lord’s lived up to my boyhood dream and then some and after spending the day there even my wife, who is not an avid sports fan, asked when are we coming back! That date is surely 2022 when South Africa tours England again, AND I CAN NOT WAIT!

Dis met storm-winde en reën buite, dat ek oor die lente skryf. Toegevou in wolklere en knus voor die verwarmer, sukkel ek om die lente prentjie mooi in my kop te kry.

ie weer voorspellers beweer die seisoene is drie maande agter. As dit so aanhou het ons oor ’n paar jaar dalk ’n wit kersfees.

Voorspelings of te nie, die plante steur hul min aan laat seisoene, oral om my groei alles met nuwe blare en uitloopsels. Selfs die vyeboom agter in die tuin maak nuwe blare. Mozart, my wolfhond vreet die vyeblare af, nes hul mooi oopgemaak het. Ek wonder of hy vye proe of dalk het die vars nuwe blare spesiale gesondheidswaarde, want hy eet geen ander plant in die tuin nie.

Die Kaap is darem ’n mooi streek so na die reën behoorlik geval het, groen en welig. ’n rit deur Caledon se canola-lande of ’n rit deur die vrugteboorde van Grabouw en omgewing doen die gemoed goed.

Buite tuinkamers word meer deel van die dekor van jou huis. Huisvertrekke word verleng na buite in die vorm van stoepe en buite sithoeke. ’n Bankie onder die boom; maar dan makeer ’n tafeltjie vir die oggend koffiebeker en nog ’n stoel vir die buurvrou wat saam kom koffie drink en so bou jy ’n buite sitkamer. Die buitebraai moet ook prakties gemaak word. Waar moet manlief nou sy bier neersit as hy hom staan en afsloof voor die warm kole?, nog ’n tuintafel en stoel vir jou om saam te gesels.

Tuinvertrekke kan ook geskep word sonder doel en praktiese gebruik, maar deel wees van die tuin uitleg, met ’n paar potte wat ’n area skei van die res van die tuin. “Topiary” heinings kan gebruik word om ’n formele vertrek te vorm met simmetriese samestellings. In die middeleeue was dit die gebruik in tuine van kloosters, waar die medisinale kruie geplant is. “Topiary” is ’n wonderlike woord , van griekse afkoms, wat verwys na afmeet van plante in geometriese vorm.

Ek dink dadelik aan die ‘vertrekke” op die plaas, Babylonstoring, waar jy deur gange van groen bome gelei word na die volgende vertrek. Die rangskikking van die vertrekke het elk hul eie bekoring. Sommige vertrekke het deure wat jou binne lei en die gevoel van geheime verrassings skep. Daar is ’n vertrek met ’n tiemiegrasperk en op ’n houtbordjie staan “Stap gerus kaalvoet op die tiemiegrasperk- versigtig net vir bye” Ek stilleer voordeurend my tuinvertrekke met buite ornamente, deur gebruik te maak van argitekturale skerwe of beeldwerk, selfs spieëls, wat die tuin groter laat vertoon. Glasware verplaas weer lig en skep drama, so tussen die plante.

Dis met die vooruitsig van tuinvertrekke dat ek die lente begin voel en kreatiwiteit sy kop uitsteek, tussen die lae wintersklere. Volgende keer vertel ek van Jenny Jackson se paradys tuintjie en haar bekoorlike tuinvertrekke. Gelukkige lente aan jul almal.
