hings going up and down, apparently, is a universal fact. Like the sun and the moon. Soos ’n kurkprop onder die water. Like our whales.

Like that unwanted family member who pops up for Christmas Lunch every year. Oh… and that other thing… The world economy. Including ours. Don’t roll your eyes at me. Look at history and you can predict the future. We had a crash in 2008. And eventually every thing improved… So now ten years later we’ve had another crash… and again we will recover. What goes down, must come up… Therefore: I’m not going anywhere. I like it here.

And it can only get better from here on out.

Luckily Mr. Trump doesn’t have much interest in annihilating the bunch of losers at the bottom of the African continent.

Finally, after much needed rain, we seem to be heading into the summer season. And as usual our whales are oblivious to the turmoil on land. They are mainly interested in coming up for air… And that’s what we should be concentrating on… Survival. One breath at a time. Come up for air. Even better, come up for the Hermanus Champagne air… And while you’re up for air, why don’t you check out the view, the whales, the sea… All of this is still free, people.

I’m at an interesting place in my life. I’ve gone through some torrid times. I had a choice: Either get seriously depressed and simply not get up in the mornings… Or decide to view this as a second chance. I’ve opted for the latter. And since I’ve changed my mind about my circumstances, life has decided to give me a break. Things are looking up. Jaaaaay!

At the moment I’m in Johannesburg. I was in Pretoria last week… What is the point of this, you wonder? Hang on I’m getting there. I booked myself a really cheap place in Pretoria (because I had to pay for it – ha ha). The place in Johannesburg is more upmarket because the production company that flew me up is paying for the accommodation.

Okay, long story short… The days I spent in Pretoria were dismal. Because the place was UGLY! I was so depressed! Just reminded me how one is influenced by your surroundings. The Parkhurst house is beautiful. A little slice of Amulet. I liked the place so much I booked an extra day which I paid for. Gladly.

Which brings me to the next point. We are going through really difficult times at the moment. Bad news everywhere…

I have therefore decided to throw a BIG FAT PARTY. The AmuLet-there-be-Cake Party. I’ve always been a huge MarieAntoinette Fan. So Her Royal Highness Marie-Amulet is throwing a huge FANCY DRESS PARTY in Stellenbosch.

Water, natuur se luukse …

Winter was goed vir ons sover. Die damme raak voller en sommiges loop selfs oor, paaie is nat en sneeu val mildelik. Ten spyte daarvan word ons steeds gemaan om water spaarsamig te gebruik en nie al ons moeite van die afgelope jaar in die drein af te spoel nie. Dit het my herinner aan ʼn skrywe wat ek vroeër in die jaar gemaak het en dit voel van pas om nou te deel. Om my eie woorde weer te lees bring net weereens die realiteit tuis, ons is ver van OK af wat water betref. Niks laat jou water waardeer soos die krisis wat die Kaap die afgelope tyd ervaar het nie. So hier is my 5c se input oor die Kaap se waterkrisis!

Realiteit skop in wanneer mens in ʼn koffie winkel vir ʼn glas water vra en jou kelner, baie beleefd, antwoord

dat: “Jammer, ons kan nie gee nie, ons kan net verkoop. Still of sparkling, Mevrou?”

Regtig? Waar was jy die afgelope tyd? Ek het byna gestik in my koffie.

Sulke totale ignorance maak my verby woedend. Dit maak my kwaad dat my huisgesin emmers water

opgaar en dit onooglik rondstaan, dat ek nie elke aand mag stort nie en nie eens ʼn glas water uit die kraan mag kry in ʼn koffie winkel nie; terwyl Sannie en Jannie bubble bath koop en elke week karre was.

Ek dink twee keer voordat ek die toilet spoel en maak die kraan toe wanneer ek tande borsel. 'n Ander persoon weer, nogal ʼn slim mens, met ʼn graad en high-paying loopbaan, reken dat daar is eintlik genoeg water. “Hulle” (wie húlle ook al mag wees), maak ons net bang.

Watter tipe mentaliteit is dit?

Maar helaas, ek sal voortgaan om alles te doen wat ek moontlik kan om water te bespaar en die wat ek het, te hergebruik. Want ek, wat Annette is, gee om: vir myself, my

medemens, diere, die natuur en die krisis wat ons nie meer in die gesig staar nie, maar waarin ons nou right smack bang in die middel is.

Al beteken dit emmers water rond dra tot my arms wil afbreek, stortwater opvang in ʼn kom en meer as een bondel wasgoed was in dieselfde water. Al hou ek niks hiervan nie is dit plain en simple die regte ding om te doen. Dink net as elkeen van ons daardie never mind houding gehad het? Dan was dag zero nie in die naby toekoms nie – ons sou alreeds in rye moes staan vir water en vuis slaan vir die laaste bottel op die rak.

In South Africa our Gin of Origin may include any of some 30 local wild herbs and plants, giving our local craft gins its own distinctive character. A variety of classic London Dry gins are produced. Others are fynbos infused, some with delicate floral undertones, wild cucumber, local buchu, wild dagga, evil’s claw and many more old-world veld herbs adds unique flavours to differentiate South African gins from the rest of the world.

Gin can be drunk neat on ice or it can be the bases of 100’s of cocktails, as the botanicals (herbs, spices etc.) come to life in cocktails and add complexity to the drink. Therefore, so many classic cocktails call for gin. The most popular G&T however is still the favourite! Use a low sugar tonic and experience a new world of sensational flavours. Garnish your gin with a couple of coffee beans or a sprig of fennel, a couple of pepper corns, sliced strawberries or blue berries, and the flavours will enhance your favourite tipple.

Domination in World Rugby As mentioned last month we are going to discuss the difference between New Zealand’s rugby and that of the rest of the world. What are they doing that is different? In the modern world with TV and match analyses techniques why can the rest of the world not catch up with them? Six valuable lessons to be learnt from them, follow here: 1

Rugby is a game of attack against defense. It is a game and it must be played. Both attack and defense can be played defensively or offensively. New Zealand is currently playing most of their game with an offensive attitude. The result of that is that they more often than not have front-foot ball.

The next question is: why do they do this? Rugby is played with one ball and the competition revolves around the ball and the opportunity to play (attack) with the ball in order to score points. In the competition of attack (the team with the ball) and defense there is also contact from the defending team trying to prevent the attacking team from scoring points. All these contact points are an opportunity for the teams to control the game through an offensive attitude as mentioned above. Most of the contact points will be in general unstructured play.

Unstructured play means that the individual players do not really have a specific specialised position as in structured play which is formatted in scrums, lineouts, kickoffs (from the middle of the field) and kick-ins (from the 22 meter line) on the field. Structured play requires specific positions with a specific skill set per position. We will only deal with unstructured play for now.

So, what is the difference between NZ and the rest of the world in unstructured play? They all play the contact with explosive power… by increasing their power as well as their speed just before contact. This enables them to control the contact point offensively and through this they establish front-foot ball enabling them to circulate the ball to another place or position on the field in order to redirect attacking play. It also provides additional time for the support players to support on either side of the ball carrier to get in position to receive the ball for continuity in the game.

Support play is a trademark of NZ rugby. You will always see players on the left and on the right side of the ball carriers. If the ball is passed, the next 4 players work very hard to move into supportive positions in order to fulfil the support function. They are just always there!

They play by means of their implementation of running skills in the contact situation. Attacking players use their sidesteps and goosesteps to get away from the defending player enabling an off-theshoulder contact position in the tackle and therefore onto the arm. The opportunities to play effective rugby with continuity from this position on is very good. Support runners on both sides makes this a

very dangerous situation for the opposition.

Something which we see very often in their games.

The minute they create the momentum they immediately increase the intensity and urgency to exploit the situation optimally.

The next thing that they do differently is the utilization of their communication skills in each situation. This is also a time saver which makes cohesive uninterrupted play so much easier for the players. If and when I know that you are there by means of constant and specifically relevant communication, I can direct the play in your favour.

The result is there for us to see and enjoy.

The New Zealanders also implement their kicking skills where necessary in order to create doubt in the offensive defense of the opposition. From the opposition’s perspective, this then results in defensive defense. These two principles are worlds apart. The one puts you on the front-foot and the other on the back-foot.

Handling skills in distribution of the ball and timeous communication to the player in a better position than the one carrying the ball can only have positive results for the attacking team. This is evident in New Zealand’s attacking play at every level of the game.

In conclusion…to wrap up: It is not what you do when you play the game it is how you play the game in each situation.

All of these six aspects together make a huge difference in unstructured general play and all of them bring about the acquisition of extra time for the attacking team’s players to react and support. As a player, if I know that these are the principles that we are playing to, I know what to expect and it becomes so much easier to support effectively.

The Springboks have learned some lessons from the All Blacks by studying their games on video and the last test attested to this fact. Some of the above was implemented by the Springboks with very effective results

How does the new amendment to the Financial Intelligence Centre Act No 38 of 2001 (FICA) affect buyers and sellers of property?

To comply with FICA, and its latest amendment, estate agents are obliged to create a Risk Management Compliance Plan (RMCP) in order to identify and assess the risk in the event that our clients may be seeking to launder money or to finance terrorism. We are obliged to be constantly aware of both of these illegal practices and to report any instances of this and any other suspicious activity. We are obliged to monitor, mitigate and manage the risk of our services being utilized for these illegal practices.

This RMCP must ensure that the following risks (there may be more that become apparent) are assessed by the estate agent: • A purchaser or tenant may be using funds from an illicit source to purchase or rent property, thereby laundering the money.

• A tenant may be using a rented property for a business that launders money or finances terrorism.

• The owner of a property may be using income generated from the sale or rental of the property to finance terrorism.

• The owner of a property or a purchaser or tenant may be concealing their identity to avoid detection while they launder money or finance terrorism.

Proper FICA compliance procedures and our client due diligence procedures must be applied and completed in respect of all clients before any contract is concluded or any money is paid or received by a client, or by a representative of the client. They must also be implemented and applied in respect of clients that we are currently concluding single transactions with and in respect of clients that we have an existing business relationship with.

This all has to happen as from 2 October 2018.

Our company as well as all other estate agencies are prohibited by section 20A of FICA from establishing a business relationship, or concluding a single transaction, with an anonymous client or client with an apparent false or fictitious name. Any estate agent who breaches this rule will be guilty of an offence and subject to disciplinary action, both in terms of our internal disciplinary rules and in terms of the Financial Intelligence Centre Act. We are obliged to continue to monitor existing clients and to take note when the client behaves in a manner inconsistent with our previous knowledge of the client. Such behaviour may well require us to report the client. Circumstances in which this may be relevant are the following: • If a landlord instructs us to pay rentals into the account of an unknown 3rd party without a proper explanation.

• If a tenant continues to rent either residential or commercial premises when we are aware that their legitimate source of income has ceased to exist.

• Any other unexplained change of behaviour that raises suspicion.

To establish and verify the identity of all of our clients and our prospective clients, we are obliged to utilise questionnaires that we draw up and present to our clients, being purchasers, buyers, tenants and landlords. When dealing with legal persons, trusts and partnerships, we are obliged to implement additional due diligence measures and procedures.

It is thus imperative that clients of estate agents are aware of these processes and understand that we are legally obliged to request that our clients fill out questionnaires that require to be signed as authentic by the client.

When we engage with the prospective client to enter into a single transaction or to establish a business relationship, we must, before any transaction is finalised and before any money changes hands: • Establish and verify the identity of the client, or if the client is acting on behalf of another person, we must establish and verify the identity of that other person as well as verify the client’s authority to act on behalf of that other person. If another person is acting on behalf of the client, we must establish and verify the identity of that other person and verify that other person’s authority to act on behalf of the client.

• We must establish whether the transaction that will be performed in terms of the business relationship is consistent with our knowledge of that client.

• We must establish the source of funds that the prospective client intends to use in concluding the transaction.

If our client is a legal person, a trust or a partnership, there are further obligations that we need to adhere to and verify. There are also certain ‘high-risk’ clients that are identified in the Act that we are obliged to report to the Financial Intelligence Centre We also have a duty to report suspicious transactions if we know or just suspect any of the following: • One of the parties to the transaction will be using or receiving the proceeds of unlawful activities; or • a property which is connected to an offence relating to money laundering or the financing of terrorist and related activities will be changing hands; or

• if the transaction has no apparent business or lawful purpose; or the transaction is designed for the purposes of avoiding giving rise to a reporting duty under FICA; or • the conduct of the parties may be related to the evasion or attempted evasion of a duty to pay any tax or duty or levy due to SARS or relates to money laundering or the financing of terrorist or related activities.

Failure to comply with this RMCP and/or the Financial Intelligence Centre Act is an offence punishable by an internal sanction of the estate agency company and by harsh fines and prison sentences in terms of the Act. These fines can amount to R50 million, and prison sentences for up to 5 years can be imposed.

The Amendment FIC Act incorporates a risk-based approach to compliance elements such as customer due diligence and requires accountable institutions like estate agencies to understand their exposure to money laundering and terrorist financing risks. We therefore not only protect and maintain the integrity of our business but also contribute to the integrity of the South African financial system.

Non-compliance is not an option.

We view it as extremely important to recognise the part that we can play in assisting our country to comply with international laws to combat terrorism and money laundering in particular.

Wicus van Wyk Queen is ‘n Britse rock groep wat in London gestig is in 1970. Brian May en Roger Taylor was oorspronklik lede van die groep Smile en Farrohk ‘Freddie’ Bulsara was ‘n aanhanger. Toe Bulsara by hulle aansluit, stel hy die naam ‘Queen’ voor en neem die naam Freddie Mercury aan. John Deacon het kort daarna by hulle aangesluit. Die groep se tweede album, Queen II, word in 1974 uitgegee en dit is hierdie een wat die wêreld laat regop sit. Sedertdien word verskeie albums uitgegee en hulle musiek word in verskeie rolprente gebruik. Hulle toer ook wêreldwyd en vertonings is maande vooruit vol bespreek.

Met die verkoop van omtrent tussen 150 en 300 miljoen albums is hulle een van die bes verkoopte musiek groepe. In 1990 ontvang Queen die “Outstanding Contribution to British Music Award”. In 2001 word hulle ingehuldig in die “Rock & Hall of Fame”. BRIAN MAY Brian Harold May, CBE (born 19 July 1947) is an English musician, singer, songwriter, astrophysicist, and photographer. He was the lead guitarist for the rock band Queen, and used a home-built electric guitar called the Red Special. In 2018, he received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award which recognises "the most distinctive recordings in music history". His compositions for the band include "We Will Rock You", "Tie Your Mother Down", "I Want It All", "Fat Bottomed Girls", "Flash", "Hammer to Fall", "Save Me", "Who Wants to Live Forever", and "The Show Must Go On".

ROGER TAYLOR Roger Meddows Taylor (born 26 July 1949) is a multi-instrumentalist, best known as the drummer for Queen. In 2005 he was voted by radio listeners as the eighth-greatest drummer in classic rock music history in a poll conducted by Planet Rock.

As a songwriter, Taylor contributed songs to Queen's albums, composing at least one track on every album, and often singing lead vocals on his own compositions. He wrote or co-wrote the number 1s hits "These Are the Days of Our Lives", "Innuendo" and "Under Pressure" and contributed the hits "Radio Ga Ga", "A Kind of Magic", "Heaven for Everyone", "Breakthru", and "The Invisible Man”. Taylor married a South African Sarina Potgieter.

JOHN DEACON John Richard Deacon (gebore 19 Augustus 1951) is ‘n afgetrede Britse musikant bekend vir sy leidende rol as bas kitaarspeler van die groep Queen.
