Wêreldb Wêrel dbeker eker Rugby November 2023

T

he one aspect which meant the most for our country in this tournament is the unity that it created for the people of South Africa. They, the team and the players, represented us… although not necessarily in terms of the demographics of SA to the full. The diversity from the smallest to the tallest from the lightest to the heaviest, from the palest to the darkest and everything in between. The most amazing thing about this team is that every South African male could associate with a player in a position and participate in the game through the game. Even the ladies could say that is my man. Well done Bokke!

ball and role away where the attacking side can bridge over the ball off their feet and recycle the ball up to over 30 times. I thought that the game was for players on their feet! We must always remember that the attacking player has more than 15 options that he can play/utilize, other than to run into the opposition. That is only but one option.

Yes, it was a very, very, very interesting World Cup tournament. To win the last three matches with 1 point tested our hearts to the full. We made it. The way we played, it seemed destined to happen in the dying stages of the match. Rugby is, for sure, one of the most complex and multidimensional facetted games than any other sport and it should stay that way.

Terug by die eerste inslag. The next point that I would like to stress is the fact what there are two different sets of laws for the attacker and the defender in the contact situation. The main aim of defense is to regain possession, but if I make a good tackle I must release the attacker and the 4

Yes, the refs had a big influence on the game and wrongly so. In my mind simplicity will do it for me and not all the TV referee’s third party involvement that we saw at the world cup. That, however, is a topic for another day. Veldposisie ens ens ens. Strafskoppe… en ek is weer by Naas Botha. “ And you be the judge of that…” (Judge Dennis Davis)

The West Coast Rock Lobster Jasus lalandii)

W

est Coast rock lobster (crayfish or ‘’kreef’’ as they are known locally) grow very slowly and can live to the ripe old age of 50 years or so. Generally found on rocky reefs, where it prefers the shelter of crevices. Often seen in groups with antennae protruding from the shelter. Its predators include seals, sharks and large fish. It is susceptible to low oxygen levels in the water which may cause mass strandings. A mysterious life-cycle Female rock lobsters carry their orange eggs on tiny hairs beneath their tails (this is when they are “in berry”). After 80 to 90 days, the eggs hatch and produce tiny transparent spider-like larvae (naupliosoma). These larvae moult and become phyllosoma larvae with long, hairy legs. All adrift The long-legged phyllosomas drift with the ocean currents for over seven months and molt 11 times! It is thought that some of these larvae are carried by ocean currents all the way to South America and back. The final larval stage (the puerulus) is a 20mm colourless lobster that swims inshore and finds refuge under a rock or a crevice where it continues to grow to maturity. It is impossible to farm rock lobster because of this long and complex life-cycle. Carnivores of the kelp forest West Coast rock lobsters are an important link in the kelp forest food chain. As carnivores, they tuck into mussels, urchins, starfish, abalone (perlemoen), and even barnacles. Where they occur in masses, they

6

have been known to devour entire populations of sea urchins, for example. However, rock lobsters are also a target for other kelp predators – they are hunted by octopuses, dogsharks, seals and humans. Managing the West Coast rock lobster fishery The South African West Coast Rock Lobster or Kreef fishery is perhaps one its most famed and certainly most controversial fisheries due to its perceived value and cultural importance to West Coast fishing communities from the diamond mining town of Port Nolloth to the metropolis of Cape Town and its diverse communities. Commercial fishing for rock lobsters began in the 1880’s. The commercial fishery expanded rapidly in the early part of the 20th century. Although catch records prior to 1940 are sparse, catches appear to have peaked in the period 1950 to 1965, when between 13 000 and 16 000 tons were landed annually. From 1946 onwards, annual quotas were granted, based primarily on the performance of the fishery in the preceding season. Until the mid-1960’s, catches were directly controlled by these quotas. In the 1967/68 fishing season, catch rates began to decline and quotas could not be filled. Management measures that were enforced early on were size limits and a closed season. Catches of berried or soft-shelled lobsters were banned. The 1990/91 season again saw the catch rates drop and in the ensuing years, the commercial TAC was gradually reduced, reaching 1 500 tons in the 1995/96 season. In 2001, the lobster fishery was divided into an offshore commercial and a small scale or artisinal fishery. The offshore lobster fishery is permitted to catch rock lobster using traps. The offshore fishery uses larger, more sophisticated vessels than the

artisinal right-holders in the nearshore fishery, which is restricted to using hoopnets in shallow waters. The small-scale commercial (nearshore) fishery replaced the subsistence fishery in 2001 in keeping with the recommendations of an independent review of subsistence fishing in South Africa. The review recommended that high-value subsistence fisheries such as west coast rock lobster, traditional linefish and abalone should be commercialised but restricted for use by small-scale or artisinal fishers. The commercialisation of these fisheries permitted fishers to sell and market their products at substantially higher rates than subsistence fishers were able to command, thereby increasing the earning efficiencies of the fishery.

Support these regulations

The sustainability of the lobster fishery has come under serious threat over the recent past with the introduction of a category of fisher referred to as “interim relief fishers”. These interim relief fishers comprise some 1500-2000 people who are allocated a proportion of the nearshore lobster catch limit, placing exceptional pressure on the resource. There is very little official research on the socio-economic impact of the introduction of the interim relief sector but wide-spread anecdotal evidence has shown that the introduction of more than 1500 “fishers” has increased social tensions in communities and reduced economic profitability of the fishery for small-scale commercial lobster fishers.

Size limit

The lobster fishery has also become synonymous with corruption, maladministration, poaching and illegal fishing principally due to the proliferation of the number of “right holders” and middlemen purporting to represent communities and quota holders.

Open season Make sure you know when the season for West Coast rock lobster opens and only fish for them during this time. Permit Get a permit for West Coast rock lobster from your local post office. Bag limit Only four West Coast rock lobster are allowed per person per day. You may not sell your catch and you must transport the lobsters in their whole state. Only crayfish with a minimum size of 80mm may be removed from the sea. Respect egg-carrying females Your may not take out female lobsters that are in berry. Return them to the sea immediately. The impact of red tide Red tide (decaying phytoplankton blooms) often occurs in areas where large numbers of West Coast rock lobster occur. Red tide causes oxygen levels to drop dramatically and the rock lobsters move inshore, searching for oxygenated water. They are often left stranded by the receding tide, resulting in what is mistakenly referred to as “rock lobster walkout”. In 1997 the largest ever stranding of rock lobster occurred in Elands Bay. An estimated 2 000 tons of rock lobster was lost as a result.

The collapse of the lobster fishery is the antithesis of the squid fishery. This fishery has shown how poor management and a very weak industry association, coupled with poor policy and general mismanagement of the fishery has collapsed a high value fishery that was thriving just over a decade ago. Fifteen year fishing rights were allocated in the offshore and nearshore commercial fisheries in 2017. After the conclusion of the Minister’s appeals process in late 2018, a total of 298 commercial offshore fishing rights were allocated and a further 596 rights were allocated in the nearshore commercial (hoop-net) fishery. The fishery is presently managed in terms of both a TAC and TAE, which determines a closed season as well as seasonal fishing effort limits. The trap fishery operates from November to the end of September while the nearshore hoop net fishery operates from October to the end of June each year. Lobster stocks are presently at less than 2% of historical biological estimates and WWF SASSI considers the resource as being RED (NOT TO BE BOUGHT). Recreational crayfishers Over and above this catch, recreational fishers take out about 69 tonnes per year. This is a substantial amount and recreational fishers should make certain that they and others keep to the regulations. This will ensure that the fishery remains sustainable and that they can continue to enjoy this pastime in the future. 7

elcome to the second in a series of articles aimed at keeping you and your family safe online.

As a safety and security stakeholder the OVSRA regularly attends SAPS Joint Operational Committee meetings at the Hermanus Police Station. One of the biggest issues, raised every week, is commercial crime. These are white collar crimes i.e. fraudulent, financially motivated, nonviolent crimes. Although we are all possible targets for these crimes, unfortunately the majority of people affected are amongst the most vulnerable in our community – older, retired individuals who are not always tech savvy, and easily fall prey to online scams. WhatsApp, Telegram and other similar messaging services have revolutionised how we stay in contact with family and friends, and how we do business. While this ease of connectivity allows us to feel closer to loved ones it also opens us up to the illegal activities of criminals and scamsters. The most common crimes associated with these platforms are: • Phishing This is when criminals try to trick you into revealing your personal information e.g. passwords and financial information. • Scams People may send you a fake message coercing you into sending money, gift cards and personal information, or even pretending to be someone you know who has supposedly lost their phone or changed their number. • Malware and Viruses Criminals may distribute software and links that, if you click on them, may damage, or compromise your phone or tablet security and your privacy. • Identity Theft Cyber criminals have been known to gather personal information about users in order to steal their identity, which can result in devastating financial losses, or reputational damage. • Sharing of Videos/Images Images and videos can spread like wildfire. Ensure that you are not unwittingly caught up in illegal activity by sharing material such as nudes, violence, crimes in progress, and naming and shaming. In order to be more tech savvy you can do the following: • Keep your apps updated, thus ensuring that you have the latest security features. • Use strong passwords with a combination of letters, numerals and special characters, and do not use passwords that are easy to guess e.g. your date of birth. 8

• Enable Two-Factor Authentication in order to add an extra layer of security. This usually requires a PIN code to access your account, or change your password. • Be wary of suspicious, unsolicited messages. Verify the sender’s identity via a voice or video call. • Report and block suspicious users from within the messaging app. By remaining vigilant you will reduce the risk of falling prey to unscrupulous individuals. If you suspect that you are the unfortunate victim of commercial crime, please report it to your bank if necessary and visit SAPS in order to make a case. Please make a difference by sharing this information with the older members of our community, and let them know that they can call you if they are uncertain how to proceed. 7 Benefits of Advertising in Digital Magazines By Jenna Bruce

U

nless you have a strong aversion to dealing with reality you’ve no doubt become aware of the fact the human race has gone mobile. Smartphones were adopted in a relatively short amount of time and have great influence on consumers. Additionally, this increased mobile usage has led to an increase in the consumption of digital content. According to the Magazine Media Factbook, more than 90% of adults still read magazines and an increasing number of them are doing so on tablets and smartphones. The report goes on to say that one in 10 tablet owners read digital magazines daily, and magazine apps frequently top the iPad charts in categories like Lifestyle, Health and Fitness, and News. The factbook shared some other eye-opening figures that speak to the trend of consumers demanding and consuming more and more digital media in the form of online magazine publications: • 80% of respondents took some kind of action after downloading the digital version of a magazine such as visiting the magazine’s website, social media sites, or recommending the magazine to a friend or family member. •19% of tablet owners read digital magazines almost every day, and 34% of tablet users read digital magazines at least once per week. 49% of tablets users said they read digital magazines one to three times per month, while 66% read digital magazines once per month. What do these figures mean to marketers considering advertising in a digital magazine? Digital magazines offer tremendous benefits unmatched by other media channels. 1. Reach Readers beyond Regional Boundaries Digital magazines have the ability to reach readers on a global scale. They have become a powerfully engaging way to keep a reader’s interest while maintaining loyalty, even when readers have moved to another location. Digital magazines allow publishers to send content to readers no matter their location. 2. Faster Publishing and Distribution Digital magazines reach their audience in a very short amount of time, and online readers often consume the edition the very same day it’s distributed. 3. Content Flexibility One of the advantages digital magazines have is they can 14

contain an increase in the number of pages without changing the layout or having to condense text to work with a particular format. Also, publishers do not incur additional costs for paper or printing additional pages in a digital version of a magazine, which means no additional fees are passed on to advertisers. 4. Digital Magazines Don’t Kill the Printed Versions Some would have you believe digital publishing replaces print, but this is simply not so – there is room for both printed and digital magazines. In fact, 87% of those interested in reading magazines on a mobile device still want a printed copy. Owning the digital publication of a magazine does not stop readers from wanting the printed copy as well. 5. Better Understanding of Readers True customer satisfaction often relies on two-way communication, and digital publishing software allows digital magazines to track reader engagement and identify preferred topics, which can then enhance future publications. When content is created around the audience’s interests, they are more engaged and more apt to click on advertisements distributed throughout the content. 6. No Revenue Loss from Unsold Copies With digital magazines, publishers don’t have to worry about the expense and logistics associated with unsold copies. Again, the more money a publisher saves, the more savings will be passed on to advertisers. 7. Built-in Metrics Thanks to ad-management and ad-serving technology, publishers can tell advertisers exactly how many readers clicked on ad links. Advertisers are also not limited to plain text links but can now use and get reporting back from rich media such as videos and interactive links. Digital magazines offer an enhanced brand advertising experience because they place the reader in a highly designed editorial context which drives reader engagement and purchase intent. Publishers can then use special tracking software that uncovers actionable insights into how audiences engage with editorial and advertising content, which allows advertisers to tailor future campaigns for maximum results.

ith the summer break approaching lots of families are soon heading off on holiday. If you have young children then buoyancy aids for the pool are essential. We’ve been lucky enough to be sent a Swimfin to try out. As a swimming teacher I’ve used lots of different aids, so how did the swimfin measure up? If you haven’t seen a Swimfin before then they basically look like a shark’s fin that straps on to the child’s back. It’s made from EVA foam which is lightweight, feels really durable and dries quickly. The two straps are secured using velcro so can be adjusted to the size of the child. Larger straps are available if ‘big kids’ want to give it a try. The standard Swimfin straps are aimed at children age 2-12 years (younger children can use it but must be able to support their own body. Do not put it on a baby!) Having never used a Swimfin before I wasn’t sure how well it would support a child, especially a non-swimmer. I tried it out on my son Cody who is 6 years old and a weak swimmer. He can swim 10 metres on his front and back unaided. The straps of the Swimfin fit comfortably round him and he was so excited to try it out! I got Cody to try out swimming on his front with the fin. The fin helped him achieve a flat body position in the water and he loved being a shark! We then had a go at swimming on his back which he actually managed really well. I was suprised as didn’t think it would be very easy on his back. The Swimfin gives a good amount of support though to get a horizontal body position in the water. Rolling from front to back was a little tricky and he used his arm to help push the fin round but was able to do it on his own. The big test was to see how the float faired with Cody in an upright position in the water as this is how nonswimmers tend to be. The fin was completely submerged beneath the water to give him enough support to stay up. He was able to tread water and move around comfortably. The fin didn’t push him face-down as I expected which is great. When Cody jumped in to the pool the Swimfin brought him straight back up to the surface. He had a go at trying to swim under water with the fin on but despite kicking with all his might the fin kept him afloat – as it should!

I’m really impressed with the Swimfin and look forward to using it more on our future trips to the pool. Cody loved wearing it and found it very comfortable. The straps didn’t rub his skin at all. If your child is particularly sensitive then put a swim top on them and the swimfin over the top.

The play element of this being shaped like a shark’s fin means kids will love wearing it. They have their arms free to practise swimming which is a big plus compared to arm bands or a swimming noodle. It also allows children to learn to support themselves in the water far better than a swimming jacket as well. We highly recommend it! Kate from Moms Family Fun
