There’s been a lot of news lately about “exoplanets.” Those worlds beyond our solar system that most of us can only use our imaginations to envision. An exoplanet is simply a planet that orbits another star. In March NASA announced that it had found 3 Earth-sized exoplanets in the habitable zone around the star known as TRAPPIST-1, a dwarf star roughly the size of Jupiter that’s 39 light years from us. Even more recently some researchers at the South African Astronomical Observatory and Lehigh University in the United States announced they’d found a huge exoplanet with the density of Styrofoam! This puffy gas giant seems to be 40% larger than Jupiter but with only one-fifth the mass. And it’s a quick year there as it orbits its star in just 5 days. When I was studying physics in the 1970’s we only knew of nine planets, the ones around our own Sun (back then Pluto was still a planet). We could postulate that if there were planets here, there must be planets around other stars as well. But, no one had ever detected one. The first was found and confirmed in the 1990’s. Today there are known to be 3,610 with more being found every day. How did we go from none to thousands? Scientists, especially astronomers, are amazingly creative. It is very hard to simply point your telescope at a region of space and find an exoplanet. You have to be patient. For example, NASA’s Kepler space-based telescope stares at a region of space and waits for the star

to dim slightly. This is called the Transit Method, you wait for the planet to move between Earth and the star. As the planet moves in front of the star, it blocks a bit of the starlight and the star appears to dim. If you can watch long enough, the star will return to its original intensity, even longer observations will tell scientists how long it takes the exoplanet to obit the star as well as something about how massive it might be. This technique has become so refined that it is possible to detect moons orbiting the exoplanet. Other scientists look for the “wobble” in the star’s position and can infer the presence of an exoplanet. While it’s now possible to find an exoplanet, it’s still impossible to visit one. The fastest object ever to leave the Earth is NASA’s New Horizons probe to Pluto. After launch it was moving so fast it crossed the Moon’s orbit in just 9 hours, yet it took 9 years to get to Pluto. If we could send a spacecraft to the exoplanets at TRAPPIST-1, 39 light years away, at the same speed as the New Horizons probe it would take over 700,000 years to travel there! “After Jim submitted his article to SPLASH, NASA announced that they’d found 219 more exoplanets!”

About Jim Adams Jim Adams, retired Deputy Chief Technologist for NASA, managed the entire NASA Planetary Science portfolio from 2007 to 2012, enabling the exploration of Mercury, the Moon, Mars, the asteroid belt, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto. Jim has worked on over two-dozen space missions, and received three NASA medals recognizing exceptional service and leadership, including NASA’s Outstanding Leadership Medal. He holds a B.Sc in Physics from Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pennsylvania (PA) and a M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Villanova University, Villanova, PA. A gifted storyteller, Jim engages the curiosity and imagination of his audiences, and inspires emerging scientists and entrepreneurs to think creatively and inventively.

VIVE L’AFRIQUE! Oftewel: Mooi is mooi in enige taal.

E

k het ’n vae spesmaas dat ek dalk in ’n vorige lewe Marie-Antoinette was. Of ten minste het ek in ’n stadium in Versailles rondgehang. Iewers in my SuidAfrikaanse are bruis daar Franse bloed. En ’n Franse chanson maak my knieë lam. Kom luister gerus in Amulet.

(’n baie baie klein stukkie – soos bv. Ek is afterall ’n vrou: en shopping is my ding. Maar wees gewaarsku: dis oorweldigend a la MarieAntoinette. Terug by Koningin Marie se geboorteplek.

Tel 028 313 0359, 4 Broad Str Hermanus

Merci Monsieur.

Malibu song by Miley Cyrus

Released 17 May 2017 Destiny Hope Cyrus became a teen idol when she starred in the Hannah Montana in 2006. The standout of this song is it’s utter inoffensiveness. After her much publicised break up with actor Liam Hemsworth she seemed to go off the rails and went out of her way to shock us with her behaviour. They have rekindled their relationship and are engaged. If this song is the new Miley, some say the true Miley. I look forward to her upcoming album.

Imagine Dragons - Evolve

Novum by Procol Harum

Feed The Machine Album by Nickelback

Heartbreak by Lady Antebellum

Released 23 June 2017 Imagine Dragons is a Rock band from Las Vegas. Lead vocalist and songwriter says that he was in a really healthy headspace when writing this album and took a colourful approach. They have sold 9 mil album and 27 mil singles worldwide since they started in 2008. Several of the tracks from this album are in the Top 40 both in SA and the USA.

Released 16 June 2017 l This Canadian rock band formed in 1995 has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide. For a Band that people love to hate, (true rock fans) they have been a huge commercial success. Chad Kroeger and his band of post-grungers have given us something a bit more dignified, energised and well written. Mainstream rock with hints of alternative metal. Might not sway haters, but the band have touched up their sound and tried some new things.

Released on 21 April 2017 This is the band’s first studio album in fourteen years, and thirteenth overall. Their single ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’ continues to be one of the best selling singles of all time. They have helped define the progressive rock genre while embracing their roots in blues and soul. Procol Harum has been an evolving musical force from the first performance in 1967 but always led by founding member, singer, pianist and composer Gary Brooker. I enjoyed every track on this Album.

Their sixth studio album released 9 June 2017. This country trio took a break for 2016, and are back in a big way, going on a tour which includes Cape Town. This two time Grammy winning band has a new found energy, the music showcases their powerful harmonies and vocal blend. Well known for poignant ballads they have included some high energy songs on this album.

E toe W E I T oren A I T I -INe pad v T A V E i d D N s i HA Laerskool leerdersessie gehou op 4 Mei 2017.

Daar moet deurlopende ontwikkeling plaasvind in skole.

Imagine living your life with more ease, less pain, and have the ability to handle daily stresses effortlessly. If there was a healing modality that could relieve your discomfort and lessen stress, wouldn’t you want to give it a try?

Craniosacral therapy

(CST) can provide that wonderful relief. This remarkable therapy can be beneficial for your life by easing pain and reducing stress. CST was developed by John Upledger, D.O. in the 1970s, as an offshoot of cranial osteopathy, which was originally developed by William Garner Sutherland in the 1930s. Craniosacral Therapy is a very gentle hands-on therapy which assists the body’s natural healing processes. This form of therapy also helps to correct the mind-body connection, immune function and overall health.

What to expect A full session generally lasts up to 1 hour. Treatment is usually carried out with you lying down, fully clothed. As your body perceives the light pressure applied by the CST practitioner on various parts of the body, it begins a spontaneous process of making corrections and readjustments. CST is client-led and your body will set the pace of work, so you will remain comfortable, in control and be able to integrate the changes that occur

What Conditions Can Craniosacral Therapy Help? There isn’t a condition for which CST is not helpful. CST addresses the nervous system, muscular system and brain; while helping to relieve a full spectrum of pain, illness and dysfunctions. It is suitable for people of all ages and conditions, including newborn babies, children, the elderly and pregnant women. It can be effective in acute or chronic cases. The following is a partial list of conditions that craniosacral therapy has been known to help: • • • • • • • •

Back & neck pain Insomnia, sleep disorders Headaches, migraines Depression & anxiety Emotional/physical trauma of all kinds - birth, falls, accidents, other injuries, surgery TMJ Syndrome Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders General/ chronic fatigue

And many others

Dr John Upledger, founder of craniosacral therapy, says, “By complementing the body’s natural healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction.”

Deur my venster is basies 'n loerkyk in my hart, deur my hart se venster. Sal jy, is 'n liedjie, of eintlik 'n storie oor my boemelaar-vriend Freddie.

Ja ek glo in wonderwerke.

LOVE HANDLES WHAT’S TO LOVE? We all know the changes that happen to our bodies as we age. We develop areas of stubborn fat which no amount of exercise or dieting helps.

action of LPG breaks down these fibers resulting in a smooth texture of skin. So all in all, LPG will smooth, tone and slim. Best of all the treatments are painless and natural. Studies have also shown that this mechanical stimulation actually stimulates release of fat and breakdown of fat cells by up to 70%. This, in resistant fat which is metabolically inactive and non-responsive to exercise, yields phenomenal results. Studies show that there is no trauma or inflammation in tissue being stimulated; but that procollagen is increased by 240% and elastin by 160%. Hyaluronic acid is increased by 80% and skin luminosity by 98%. All this in one painless, pleasantly massaging treatment.

W

e are excited to announce that as of May, we have bought LPG @Refine. LPG is a machine used for body contouring, slimming and cellulite treatment. It was developed in Paris, France, where professors specialize in body fat, how to get rid of it safely and when to use which modality. This modality has been extensively studied and is the only natural technique which safely stimulates release of fat resistant to diet and exercise. Unlike other fat destruction techniques, it is painless. A lot of clients’ remark, that each treatment feels like a full body massage. The machine has rollers and mechanical devices which massage, stimulate and rejuvenate the skin. It is the most effective technique for reducing cellulite and registered with the FDA. So what benefits can a client look forward to with LPG? LPG massage is smoothing, toning and slimming. It increases microcirculation leaving the client “tingling” after a session. Studies have shown that there is indeed an increase in skin collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid (skin filler gel). Age, smoking and years of sun, damages the skin and it is these effects which will be combated with LPG. But LPG Endermologie is not only exercise for your skin and cellulite; this treatment has many medical benefits too. It has been used extensively in burns patients to decrease adhesions in the skin. Reduce scarring and keloid tissue. It helps to increase the range of motion around a joint and increase microcirculation leading to improved wound healing. A very important medical indication of LPG Endermologie is in patients who have had cancer and develop water retention or poor lymph drainage, as a result of surgery. This is especially important in ladies who have had mastectomy for breast cancer. Often the surgeon is forced to remove tissue related to lymph drainage and the patient develops swelling and poor drainage in the arms. With the rolling stimulating massage therapy, drainage is restored. It is important to treat this side effect as poor circulation may lead to other complications such as ulcers or infection.

Other benefits of LPG include relief of mild aches and pains, relaxing muscle spasm and increased microcirculation. So skin fitness here we come. LPG fits in very well with other body treatments currently offered at REFINE. Carboxyl therapy, where CO2 is blown under the skin is also a potent stimulator of microcirculation and collagen synthesis. Carboxyl can be used in certain areas of stubborn fat or for general facial skin tightening. It has phenomenal results in dark circles under the eyes. Carboxyl is also great for cellulite treatment as it tightens skin. Radiofrequency (otherwise known as tripolar); is a heat treatment which stimulates circulation, helps to destroy fat cells and stimulates collagen. And lastly Lipodissolve injections. These injections into areas of stubborn fat such as under the chin; actually causes fat cells to burst open and melts the contents, which is then excreted by the liver. All of the above treatments can be used in combination and results will be exponential the more treatment modalities that are involved. Treatments are R350 for LPG full body and R375 for carboxyl and radiofrequency half hour treatments. Lipodissolve is R400 per vial used. If you are not sure which treatment applies to your stubborn fat, ask your therapist or doctor to advise. Should you want a full body treatment one would most likely opt for LPG; whereas specific areas of fat or where tissue needs to be lifted and tightened; one would opt for carboxyl-therapy, lipodissolve and or radiofrequency. Moving forward we will also be entering the arena of weight loss and food for life! Watch this space.

Plastic surgeons in France and USA use LPG extensively prior to surgery to stimulate skin and after surgery to improve healing. Liposuction patients or patients who have had cryotherapy for fat dissolving are often left with lumps and bumps and LPG technology evens these out. It also resolves bruising, after procedures by increasing microcirculation which stimulates the bruise to be resorbed quickly. It will also increase healing for reasons mentioned above. Loss of mobility patients, such as the elderly or stroke patients, benefit as, by stimulating muscles and tone, the brain becomes more aware of where the body parts are and how to move them. Nerves are stimulated with the massage treatment. But back to aesthetics….in a study called “Save Our Skin(SOS)” LPG Endermologie was shown to have the best results in treating cellulite. The skin is naturally and painlessly rehabilitated. Cellulite occurs for several reasons: skin becomes thinner as we age hormonally. LPG changes skin thickness by stimulating fibroblasts (collagen cells), which produce increased amounts of healthy collagen and elastin. Cellulite fat also has an increase in fluid retention. LPG Endermologie massages and rolls the fluid out of the fatty tissues so that it is reabsorbed. All the toxins are flushed out of the system where they have remained stagnant. Cellulite also has fibrous bands (like tiny ligaments); the mechanical

Wanting to invest in residential property? Read here first… The decision to invest in residential property can be an extremely taxing (excuse the pun) one or a very profitable one. This depends on many factors that we are not going to explore in full here today, but we are going to share some very interesting facts with you about this exciting possibility.

A young, well-qualified gentleman, Anton Breytenbach has joined up with REDZetc and is operating under the trade name Empire Wealth @REDZetc. Anton specializes in providing our clients with a personalized property investment plan and covers all the possible aspects pertaining to such a plan including things like: 1. Your investment structure; for optimal estate, tax and investment planning. 2. Investment focus; opportunities to focus on based on your personal risk profile. 3. Your financing strategy; funding, leveraging and gearing properties in your portfolio. 4. Your buying strategy; buying, selling and holding properties in your portfolio Anton mentions that one of the interesting tax breaks that SARS is currently offering is where you purchase or own at least 5 properties. As an incentive for buy-to-let property investors in the private sector to provide much needed housing to the middle-income market, in the form of rental units, SARS allows a significant tax benefit on new residential properties bought and let. The incentive allows the buy-to-let investor (the tax payer, be it an individual or an entity) to ‘write-off ’ from 30% to 100% of the purchase cost of new properties, or improvements of residences, against his/her annual income tax liability. Here are some easy pointers to help you on your way… 1. Qualifying criteria: 1.1 The taxpayer must own at least 5 residential units in the same entity. 1.2 All units must be situated in South Africa. 1.3 The residential units must be new and unused, in other words purchased directly from the developer and also not previously tenanted. 1.4 The units must be used solely for the purpose of residential letting. 2. What percentage of the cost can you write off as depreciation? On new units purchased, you can write off 55% if the units are sectional title, 75% on average if plot and plan or freestanding homes (because you can write off 0% on the land and 100% on the top structure) and 100% if semidetached. On existing new properties, 30% of the cost of any necessary improvements to the building (so that it can be let out) can be written off. 3. Over which term is the write off allowed? The total permitted depreciation is deductible against the owner or tax payer’s income tax liability at a rate of 5% per annum over 20 years. An even greater depreciation of 10% per annum is permitted in the case of low cost housing, which is defined under the Act as a stand-alone unit to the value of up to R300 000 or an apartment to the value of up to R350 000. Should you own less than five such properties, you would only be entitled to claim the allowance in the first year that

PAM SNYMAN

you own five rental properties. If you own more than five such properties, you are entitled to receive the allowance on all those properties as there is no upper limit to the quantity of units allowed. The allowance is not apportioned for part of a year either, so even if the units are acquired and let on the last day of a tax year, the full allowance may be claimed as a deduction in that year! With some exciting new developments being planned for Hermanus, please keep this in mind as well as the fact that there is currently a shortage of rental apartments in the more affordable market. “Buy-to-let’ may very well become a reality for you…soon… Watch this space as they say in the movies! Anton can be contacted Empire Wealth @ REDZetc on his cell: 072 5295838 021 974 6206 or anton@redzproperties.co.za

About the Stellenbosch Libertas choir Freedom in Harmony The Libertas Choir is regarded as the embodiment of the “Rainbow Nation in Harmony”. Professor Johan de Villiers founded the choir in 1989, during a time in the history of South Africa when multi-racial groupings were still frowned upon. The mandate of the choir still is to foster peace, goodwill and reconciliation across racial and cultural divides through a shared passion for music. Throughout its 25-year existence, the Libertas Choir has kept its vision for transformation, and passion for excellence in musicality. The choir is richly textured, with its members from widely contrasting backgrounds, speaking a variety of languages and representing a kaleidoscope of the cultures and communities that is weaved into South African society. The Choir’s repertoire reflects this diversity, and ranges from major choral works (including Handel’s “Messiah”, the “Elijah” of Mendelssohn and the “Requiems” of Brahms, Mozart, and Verdi, as well as Bach’s “B Minor Mass”), to indigenous African folk music. The choir is also fond of introducing audiences to newly commissioned works and indigenous music for which scores often do not exist. The Libertas Choir has performed extensively in the Western Cape, nationally and abroad. Sponsorship from Transnet (1991 – 1996) enabled the choir to perform in major art centres across South Africa, including concerts at the major annual Arts Festivals in South Africa (Grahamstown and Oudtshoorn). The Choir performed regularly on radio and television, and has released 7 CD’s to date.

The Choir has undertaken several international tours, including tours to Belgium, the USA, Germany and the Netherlands. A highlight of the German tour in 2004 was a live televised performance in the Reichstag in Berlin in front of parliament and Bundespresident Prof. Horst Köhler. In 2012, the choir returned to Germany for a three-week tour, which included a performance for Bundespresident Joachim Gauck and his office, in the state banquet hall of Schloss Bellevue. The choir has again been invited by the Evangelical Church of Westfalia in Germany to participate in the Reformation and One World campaign, leading up to the 500 year anniversary of the reformation in 2017. Johan de Villiers has been asked to conduct a mass choir of 1200 voices on Saturday 7 May in the Gerry Weber stadion in Westfalia, Germany. Over the years the choir has won numerous awards, and most recently the board of the South African Academy for Science and Art awarded an extraordinary medal of honour to Johan de Villiers and the Libertas Choir. The choir was also nominated for a Kanna award of the 2015 Klein Karoo National Arts Festival for their interpretation of The Peacemakers by Karl Jenkins, with Amanda Strydom. It has become tradition that the Choir gives Christmas concerts at the end of each year, and these performances are always immensely popular.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR: Johan de Villiers is an Extraordinary Professor of Mathematics at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and has authored two textbooks in Mathematics. His excellence as entrepreneurial choral conductor has earned him wide recognition in South Africa and abroad. During his eight-year tenure as conductor of the Stellenbosch University Choir (1977 – 1984) he, along with the Choir, undertook extensive overseas concert tours to England, Austria, Germany and Israel. Johan researched choral training and conducting techniques at Northwestern University in Evanston, USA and also studied choral conducting under Lorna de Varon at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, USA and under Robert Fountain at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. After conducting several choirs for specific occasions during the years 1985 to 1988, Johan founded the Libertas Choir in 1989 to engender a new spirit of trust in a country with historically divided communities. For his contribution he received a merit award for outstanding cultural service from the Western Cape Government. In 1995 he served on the Commission responsible for establishing a new South African National Anthem. The new Anthem is a combination of Enoch Sontonga’s well-known “N’kosi Sikeleli Africa” and of the erstwhile Anthem, “Die Stem van Suid-Afrika”. The latter, as a matter of historical interest, was composed by Johan’s grandfather, M.L. de Villiers, in 1920. Johan has conducted the Libertas Choir, together with various

orchestras, in several performances of major oratorios. He regularly acts as adjudicator at choir festivals and Eisteddfods. In 2003, in recognition of his career as a choral conductor, Johan received The Khula Arts Award for Music from the Welgemoed School of Arts, as well as The Molteno Medal: Silver from the Cape Tercentenary Foundation. In 2010 he received official recognition from the society of alumni of Stellenbosch University, the Convocation, for his contributions towards the promotion of choral music. Don’t miss them at the 2017 Kalfiefees, Sunday 13 August at 15:00. Book your tickets on Computicket now.

INTEREST in

RUGBY

– Dawie Snyman

appears I am sure that we would have won the series against the French three nil. The obvious question is: “What has changed?” What turned the Boks around? In my mind a number of things have happened and I will only mention a few:

Then I have not even mentioned the fact that such interventions would have caused a huge upward mobility in the local game as young players would have the vision that they could possibly play against an overseas team in the years to come... This would be such an inspiration and marketing tool for South Africa and the cost would be minimal. Social behaviour by our youth will also possibly change overnight and more time will be spent in local communities on the playing-fields and less with unacceptable behaviour.

O

Thinking back on my youth the same thing happened to us then. In 1955 the British Lions toured SA with Cliff Morgan the sensation at fly half. In 1960 Wilson Whineray’s All Blacks toured SA with Don Clark the sensation. And so there were other touring sides that gripped SA and made a huge contribution to the development of the game in South Africa.

Everything was just so much more personal and really close to the real world…if I can describe it like that. Many occurences on and off the field caused new icons to be born. New Springboks of note were born because they were given the opportunity to play against international players from abroad.

Rugby bly eenvoudig net ’n spel vir mense. Ons moet dit net reg aanwend. The Springboks did us proud over the last two weeks and by the time this article

Players played what they saw in front of them and they attacked the advantage line with speed and aggression. The pack of forwards provided ball on the front foot and the rest is history. Communication on the defense was better and that made the accumulation of points for the French very difficult. We must remember that it is the end of the season for them, but we need to win and that is just what we did. Elke man moet net sy werk doen.

Go Bokke Go!!!
