t the start of 2015, I was told by an expert that this year, the year of the Ram/Goat/Sheep, will be the year that the grass WILL be greener.

Good times are here. Ripe for the plucking.

With this knowledge in mind I decided to quit my permanent job and launched into a fearless persuit of my big dream. The Amulet Lifestyle Centre stuated in the old Synagogue, to my mind the most beautiful, but most neglected building in Hermanus. I started negotiating with the owners, who for the past 7 years had not even considered any applications from various prospective tenants.

Much to everyone’s surprise I managed to negotiate a five year lease. The gods were smiling on me.

Annette and James Carter designed the most gorgeous ornate fence and sliding gate to suit the building’s style. The owner liked it as well and agreed to pay for it. The talented Talitha Neethling came up with several exciting possible colour combinations that would brighten up the dismal area between the Magistrate Courts and taxi rank. And yes, the Heritage Committee approved my favourite colours. Of course the gardens would have to compliment the style of the building. An oasis at the entrance of the town. Wow, I’m a lucky girl. Customers had heard of the move and mostly the response was positive… The deposit had been paid, the lease signed… The fountains and tea garden were taking shape in my mind…

Then the bad news came. Although the Synagogue has business rights, it hasn’t been zoned for retail, merely for offices. I’m not going to bore you with the meetings, letters and begging that followed. The answer was No. No. No. Abrubt. Short. Not negotiable. Maybe someone will open up an office or maybe the buidling will remain as is… Unoccupied, neglected, a public toilet for the homeless, An eyesore as you enter town.

I was stunned. I wondered what had happened to the greener pastures promised for the Year of the Sheep. Then I realised; no one said the grass was greener on the other side… I got it. The grass is green right here, here where I am, and therefore I will be staying put. In my happy place. It may be a bit cramped, but it’s still beautiful, warm, welcoming, the coffee is the best. Ditto for the cheesecake, brownies and carrot cake.

All I need to manage now is to somehow get Broad Street to feature on the standard GPS. Yes, believe it or not, Broad street is clearly not big enough to show up on a GPS map.

Mmm, I wonder if the same person who turned down the Synagogue application can help me with the Broad Street issue? Maybe I’ll just let the bureaucrats do their thing and try my utmost to be awesome and exciting in spite of mediocrity.

Daar’s dit nou van my gemoed af. O ja, maar daar is darem goeie nuus ook. Ek het soveel ekstra voorraad gekoop met die oog op die groter spasie in die Sinagoge dat ek letterlik geen plek daarvoor het in Amulet nie.

Met die gevolg dat ek ’n vet uitverkoping gaan hou gedurende Julie. Hoe’s daai vir Krismis in die middel van die jaar. Hou Amulet se facebook dop vir meer besonderhede.

Die grootste deel van my lewe was ek ’n werkesel. (Workaholic – vir my Engelse lesers.) Dag en nag gewerk vir Eendag…

Nou is eendag hier en ek weet nie lekker wat om met hom te maak nie. Seker maar dieselfde as mens die dag aftree. Ding is net, ek is nog lank nie afgetree nie, ek het net afgeskaal en doen nie meer ses verskillende projekte terselfdertyd nie. Ek word wakker in die oggend en besef daar’s niks wat my jaag nie. Dis mos veronderstel om ’n goeie ding te wees, nie waar nie. Skielik het ek ekstra tyd. Meer as genoeg ure vir al daai baie goed wat ek nog altyd wou doen. Nou toe suster.

Wat lê jy nog? Staan op en wees produktief.

Gaan doen al daai lekker goed wat jy so moes uitstel… En skielik is ek verskriklik lui en energieloos. Wat’s my probleem? Is dit moontlik dat ek nie kan produktief wees tensy ek onder intense druk leef nie. Hoe siek is dit?

En soos altyd wanneer ek veronderstel is om konstruktief te wees, gaan klim ek op die Internet en doen ’navorsing.’ Altans, dis wat ek dit noem. Dan voel dit asof ek darem iets doen. Daar moet tog ’n rede wees hoekom ek nou ewe skielik so lui is. As ek net ’n naam vir die sindroom kan kry, sal ek baie beter voel. Post traumatiese werkstres, uitgebrande breinselle… Enigiets. Gee my net ’n antwoord. ’n Geldige verskoning vir hierdie verlammende luiheid. My man, my ma en vriende reken ek het myself so gedaan gewerk die afgelope paar jaar, ek verdien om te rus. Hoekom voel ek dan so verskriklik skuldig? Is dit omdat ek ’n vrou is? Omdat ek Afrikaans is? ’n Mens meet tog nie jou waarde aan hoe hard jy werk nie. ’n Vriendin met dieselfde probleem stuur vir my ’n Internet artikel aan. Ah – ha! Ek’s nie die enigste siel op die aardbol wat met hierdie skitsofreniese afwyking sit nie. Kyk of jy aan die volgende kriteria voldoen.

1. Of ek doen alles … Of ek doen absoluut niks.

Daar’s nie ’n tussen-in nie. Of ek werk my te pletter vir weke aaneen en tower 7 Binnelanders tekste per week op… Tussendeur skiet ek aan ’n film, skryf ’n kort verhaal en begin eksperimenteer met keramiek verf.

En dan, soos vandag byvoorbeeld, kan ek myself nie uit die bed gesleep kry nie. Ek’s te lui om kos te maak, selfs te lui om take-aways te gaan koop. Te lui om te eet. Die enigste rede hoekom ek enigsins opgestaan het is omdat hierdie artikel more moet in wees, anders was ek vir seker nou nog onder die komberse.

2. Of ek is opgetof van kop tot tone of ek slof vir drie dae lank in

dieselfde sweetpakbroek rond.

Weet nie van jou nie, maar dit vat my deesdae hopeloos te lank om soos ’n beskaafde mens te lyk en die uitgerekte broek en trui gaan beslis nie in my mooie winkel werk nie. Met die gevolg dat ons deesdae eers 10 uur in die oggend oopmaak. Ek beter myself regruk voor die somer begin!

3. Ek kan nie funksioneer sonder ’n lysie nie, maar kry dit selde reg om skaars helfte van die goeters te doen.

Ek het al in my leeftyd honderde lysies gemaak, (ten minste ’n lysie per dag wat ek versigtig bêre en dan nie weer kan kry nie. Ek maak dus vinnig nog ’n lysie. Ek is reg vir die dag. 12 ure of 2 dae later tik ek die takies af wat ek vermag het. Dis gewoonlik nie veel nie, maar dis beter as niks. Ek dra doodeenvoudig die oorblywende 15 tot 17 items oor na my volgende splinternuwe lysie. So voel jy soortvan in beheer – al is jy eintlik net besig om uit te stel.

Ek moet erken ek voel nou meer energiek as toe ek begin het met die artikel. Seker omdat ek wel iets konstruktiefs gedoen het. Ek voel ’n lysie aankom… As ek net die simpel ding kan kry. Eerste item: Berei voor vir Amulet se uitverkoping… Sien jou daar!

ONE THRILLING COMBINATION The face is a complex structure; and as such the approach to the aging face should take into consideration this complexity. In terms of anti-aging treatments, the sum of the parts is definitely greater than the whole. “Advanced studies of anatomy and physiology are responsible for a move to a more comprehensive approach, shifting the focus from individual wrinkles to a holistic paradigm.”

Radiofrequency is used often in aesthetic medicine due to its versatility, efficacy and safety profile. Radiofrequency shows immediate tissue tightening as well as subsequent remodelling and collagen production. The machines produce their effect by sending radio waves into the tissue and heating the layers beneath the skin. Micro needling similarly, is a fast, safe and effective way of inducing tissue tightening. The procedure was masterminded by Dr Des Fenandes in South Africa and is now used across the world. It can be used for breaking up pigmentation, superficial wrinkles, scars and tightening. It involves repeated punctures with fine needles leading to thousands of micro-wounds and subsequent collagen stimulation.

Chemical peeling has been used for exfoliation procedures for centuries and causes controlled destruction of the upper parts of the skin followed by skin regeneration. The peel type can be customised for pigmentation, acne and rejuvenation. Peels can be superficial involving stratum corneum for light rejuvenation all the way to deep dermis for scars and pigmentation. The possible side effects include redness, swelling, itching and acne breakout but these are usually transient.

Recent advances have involved the use of threads as an alternate option to plastic surgery for treatment of skin laxity and sagging. Threads are placed under the skin and stimulate collagen production resulting in a slow long lasting lift. Fat deposits into cheeks and lips are also used today instead of fillers.

Improved understanding of anatomy and aging has shifted the focus from treating individual wrinkles to a holistic approach. Combination treatments which are tailor-made to the patient’s needs, time and budget are really the only way to guarantee patient satisfaction and minimise side effects. A less is more approach with scheduled touch-up sessions is recommended.

he aging face from the surface, appears to be sagging with wrinkling around the mouth, eyes and cheeks. But when one looks through the skin to the bone and fat structures below, one sees that since the scaffolding on which the skin sits is diminishing; the skin has nowhere to go but to drop. Without addressing the underlying structures, one will be left with a tight but flat face. In so far as filler treatments go, the new world guidelines advise that before dealing with the jaw area, one must first re-volumize the cheek area, as this creates lift and will diminish the lines around the mouth and nose.

While in the earlier days physicians used neurotoxins (Botox ™) in one area of the face such as the frown, clinicians tend to treat multiple areas today to create a relaxed and natural look.

When one area of the face is treated, other areas may become overactive to compensate.

Hence, again a holistic, softer approach is used to create the natural look. Botox™ is used preventatively in earlier ages (35-40) and as treatment as one gets older. However, a good example of evolving and combination treatments is when treating the forehead. As one ages these muscles become intrinsically weaker and excess Botox in this area may cause the brow to drop. Hence, one would rather opt to use filler under the entire surface of the forehead or in the lines to treat the wrinkles as opposed to Botox™.

Fillers act as a scaffold for collagen and elastin as well as stimulating new collagen formation.

Strong gels have higher lifting and volumizing capacity and are used in areas requiring lifting, such as the cheeks. Softer gels are used to hydrate the skin and treat superficial wrinkles. One can thus understand that a combination of both is required to get a softer more natural result.

As one moves more superficially in the layers that are the face, one speaks of tissue tightening, collagen stimulation and skin resurfacing. Devices for skin tightening involve heat induction which changes deep structures and stimulates collagen as well as contraction of fibres which lifts the skin. Lasers will improve fine wrinkles by the above methods. It will also improve sun damage and acne scarring. The scientific concept behind a laser is controlled microscopic thermal wounds deep in the surface of the skin. This will allow for contraction, collagen stimulation and rapid wound healing in an orderly fashion.

Workout

WOW (Women only Workout) is the new girl on the block at the Pro Active Fitness Gym in Hermanus. According to the pundits it will leave you as toned as a tigress and suffused with a sense of wellbeing.

But what is it?

To the casual observer a WOW workout could look like restfulness itself. During one of the exercises at the barre in the popular Pro Active Fitness Gym, the women appear to be standing still. One could be forgiven for thinking that they are doing nothing, or very little indeed.

But one would be wrong.

WOW lets women use their muscles in ways that they have not done before.

“Exercising the smart way,” that’s the ideology of Sonia Mildner, the petite dynamo who is responsible for creating WOW. What is WOW? WOW has its roots in Callanetics, but Mildner, who is a Fitness, Nutrition and Colon health professional, has developed it so much during the past 25 years, that she says it can’t be called by that name any more. She describes the workout as “exercises in a dynamic sequencing technique that works on every part of the body, and which creates an all over feeling of well-being.

The exercises are stress-free, performed in a flowing manner with gentle, small, precise motions consistently applied, that activate the body’s muscles in groups.

“Look in the mirror... that’s your competition. You are not going to get the butt you want by sitting on it. In two weeks you’ll feel it! In four weeks you’ll see it! In eight weeks you’ll hear it! KEEP GOING. Three months from now you will thank yourself.”

But one also needs to get one’s head around the subtlety of the exercises in this age of gung-ho gymming to the sound of booming beats.

A body and mind connection Attending a WOW workout requires a body and mind connection. It’s not mindless exercising. It forces one to think about one’s body, and if one has spent a sedentary life, this can be challenging.

One of Sonia’s newbie students, a middle-aged woman who has been a desk jockey for nearly two decades and has developed an atrocious posture and back and neck problems, explains, “I started to attend WOW classes because I wanted to exercise, but my back and neck were acting up. I did not have the money to go for rehab, and at the same time I needed to exercise or gain weight.

So, I went to one of Sonia’s classes with a feeling of trepidation – fearing that I was I going to hurt myself even more. But I felt much better the next day.”

Mindful exercise WOW students use Sonia’s version of the Callanetics technique as well as the slide, exercise balls, rubber bands and the barre. They also use the pelvic tilt, a technique that is well-known to practitioners of Pilates. This subtle movement is used to protect the lower back whilst exercising, and not meant to be sexy! It’s a nurturing environment, and a happy one, where women laugh and feel safe enough to crack jokes about the pelvic tilts.

If you are looking for gung-ho exercises, a WOW workout is probably not the thing for you. But if you are looking for something that you can do for the rest of your life, that will tone you like a tigress and make you as strong as Samson, it will do the trick just nicely.

My name is GiGi and I am the winner of Celebrity Survivor Sante Carolina in 2010.

I am passionate about the Overberg. When my dad was still alive, Franskraal used to be his favourite camping site. I can now say that I am a proud resident of Franskraal, and love to visit the Sir Robert Stanford Estate on Sunday afternoons. The distillery was closed for four years, and myself and business partner Mike Crole approached Jan Malan, the owner, and we asked him if is it possible to resurrect the distillery to its former glory. The history of the Sir Robert Stanford Estate is magical and The Hansom red wine is of exceptional quality. It is an honour for Mike and I to be a part of this history and to work in a building that is over a hundred years old. We have put together a great all girl team and after doing an extensive course of distilling with Prof. Loftie Ellis, we were proud to taste our first brandy and grappa in the beginning of March. We therefore invite everybody to come and experience the rebirth of the old Stookhuis, where you will be able to taste our exotic grappa cocktails. Listen to great music from our local artists, and enjoy the sunset with the most spectacular views from the Sir Robert Stanford Estate.

Lees solank boekresensies en dwaal deur boekwinkels om te besluit watter boek(e) jy hierdie jaar teen afslag gaan koop. Moedig ook sommer die boekwinkel in jou omgewing aan om deel te neem aan die dag waarby almal baat: die boekwinkel, die skrywer, die leser, die uitgewer en die drukkers.

Wynbottel met Afrikaanse teks op in Nederland Ek loop onlangs in ’n bekende kettingwinkel in Nederland hierdie bottel wyn raak. Dit was so eienaardig om die volledig Afrikaanse teks op die bottel te lees. Dis ’n voorreg wat ons nie meer in SA het nie. Ek is nie aldag seker of bemarkers ons nie aan ons neuse rondlei nie.

Ek het ook al wyn gekoop daar met die naam “Baie dankie” en “Nie Vergenoeg nie”. Kostelik.

Creating Effective Families Sentrum(CEF)Asla Park, Mosselbaai, was Chareldine se volgende besoekpunt. By hierdie sentrum word ongelooflike goeie werk gedoen. Drie lede van die Seemeeu Dameskring was ook teenwoordig. Die sentrum het 34 leerders by die kleuterskooltjie en 26 laerskoolleerders wat die nasorgdiens gebruik. Die skool is meertalig en die kinders word blootgestel aan Afrikaans, Engels en Xhosa. Die VVA kon deur middel van Biblionef geskikte boeke in al drie hierdie tale in die boektrommel plaas wat aan die sentrum oorhandig is. Daar is in Xhosa voorgelees deur Penelope Dlokweni-Matolengwe van die sentrum, en Chareldine het met die kinders boekopvoeding gedoen met die hulp van die voorleesboek, Loukie die leeshonger leeutjie. Die sentrum het gevra vir opleiding by die nasorgsentrum sodat hulle leesondersteuning sal kan verskaf d.m.v. die Doen-en-Leerprogram. Hierdie opleiding word in Augustus deur Dokka Swart daar gedoen.

Kreatiewe erfenisbewaring wat mens aan die dink sit oor die verlede In Drenthe in die noorde van Nederland, lê die kamp, Westerbork, wat ’n deurgaankamp vir Nederlandse Jode in die Tweede Wêreldoorlog was. Die Jode, o.a. Anne Frank, is daarvandaan na Auschwitz gestuur. Daar is nie baie oor van die kamp nie, maar die foto hieronder is die kampkommandant se huis. Sy is baie vriendelik ontvang deur Elize Afrika en Rustelle Mekampies by die AbbAsorgskooltjie Boskabouters. Alhoewel dit ’n vakansiedag was, het 15 ouers die voorleeswerkswinkel bygewoon. Ruiterbos is ’n bosbou-gemeenskap wat sowat 37 kilometer buite Hartenbos gele� is. Daar is 20 kinders ingeskryf

ouja, die Super15-seisoen is op sy rug en die Stormers was in die uitspeelwedstryde as gevolg van die struktuur van die kompetisie aangesien hulle 7de op die gesamentlike puntelys was. It is so that they did not play their best team against the Sharks, but made a decision to play their second string players to rest the top players for the playoff matches. One can understand this, but we must take cognisance of the fact that South Africa’s best team is at no 7 in the competition. It can also be said that the so-called resting of the players did not help the Stormers. Die teendeel is waar.

It is very important to recognise that the number of tries that the SA teams have scored is much less than that of the New Zealand teams or their Australian counterparts. Omdat spesialisasie in ’n spesifieke posisie soveel posisionele vaardighede en gevoel vir die spel ontwikkel, behoort ’n speler nooit van posisie te verander nie, tensy daar regtig geen ander uitweg is nie. Sodra spelers rondgeskuif word en uit posisie gespeel word, word hulle onseker en ontwikkel hulle nie sommer verder nie. Neem byvoorbeeld spelers soos Frans Steyn, Francois Hougaardt, Coenie Oostuizen en ander. Die lys is baie lank. Ongelukkig is dit so dat baie meer spelers in SA deur afrigters versmoor en begrawe word, as wat hulle ontwikkel word. In my beskeie opinie was dit dan ook die enkel grootste fout wat die SA onder 20-bestuur vanjaar gemaak het.

Vandaar die gebrek aan prestasie.

m my storie reg te verstaan, moet ek eers vertel van my vriendin Wilna. Ek is bevoorreg om my lewe te deel met juweelmense.

Wilna is n glansende rooi robyn wat skitter met energie, koningklik op n manier maar ‘n sout van die aarde mens.

Ons kom ‘n langpad en ons deel baie passies, so ons gesels raak nooit op nie, dis kreatief, inspireerend en baie skeppend.

Wilna woon op ‘n driehonderd jaar oue Franse Hugenote plaas met ‘n ryk geskiedenis.

Die eerste Suid-Afrikaanse vonkelwyn is op die plaas gemaak; reeds drie generasies deel van haar familie.

Soos die tradisie loop, bly die Baas van die plaas in die hoofopstal en ander familielede in ander huise op die werf, tot dat dit tyd word vir die volgende geslag om bestuur oor te neem en daarmee saam word huise geruil.

Dus vanselfsprekend dat Wilna haar groot plaashuis sou afstaan aan haar oudste seun en sy gesin en haar intrek neem in een van die kleiner huise op die plaas, maar Wilna het ander idees gehad. Dis hier waar my storie begin….

Wilna het besluit om haar nuwe huis in die ou wynkelder en pakkamers op die plaas te maak. ‘n Kelder met vyf wyn kuipe en patina teen die mure ( ‘n karakter geskep deur jare se wynverwerking). My juweel vriendin het self verder gegaan en die varkhokke en beeskraal ook geanekseer.

Ja… jy verstaan reg; Wilna bly nou in die plaas se ou varkhokke, wat sy in ‘n paleis verander het.

Dit het haar nie net die geleentheid gegee om haar kreatiwiteit uit te leef nie maar ook ‘n plek waar sy ‘n fantasie kon skep, vir haarself.

Daar is dadelik ‘n “teater” gevoel as jy by die kelder se groot houtdeure instap. ‘n Dramatiese verhoogstel waarop Shakespeare trots sou wees. Dit is Wilna se verhoog, waarin sy die hoofrol speel en haar eie drama skep.

Haar twee mede-akteurs is Fudge en Karamel,

die sweedse veervoet hoenderjies, wat troeteldiere is. Fudge is eintlik ‘n opersanger en oefen dan en wan sy musiekstuk, as hy trots uit vollebors kraai soos net ‘n goeie plaashoenderhaan kan. Hy verkies ‘n sonplekkie op die persiesemat waar hy dan lostrek en behoorlik keel skoonmaak, daarna skut hy sy vere reg, sodat ons kan sien dat hy inpas by die dekor. Hy is nie verniet ‘n opregte Barbu D’uccle, met mille fleur, porselyn en lafentel vere nie.

Wilna het die pakkamers se solder laat afpak en wonderlike skatte ondek wat sy kon gebruik vir haar nuwe paleis.

Die houtblaaie van die droevrugte tafels is gebruik vir die dak van haar tuinhuis; ‘n asemrowernde ruimte met groot Brusseliaanse glaspaneeldeure en ou skoolvensters, waar plante net so tuis voel soos die Victoriaanse meubelstukke.

Werksbanke dien nou as vertoontafels en terselfdetyd boekestoor. Verskeie ou deure, vensters en hortjies is herwin.

Dik geelhoutplanke, wat haar man Frikkie jare terug uit Daleen Matthee se bos aangery het, is nou ingebou vir altyd se onthou. ‘n Lot 1950 teels het gehelp om die ou gifkamer in ‘n vars nuwe badkamer te omskep, met ‘n kunsvolle komposisie.

Die karakter van die wynkelder en kuipe het behoue gebly maar is ingekleur met erfstukke, persiese mate, skilderye en versamelgoed en het huis geword reg vir ‘n koningin.

Volgende keer vertel ek julle verder hoe Wilna se vermoë om uit die box te droom, n waarlike unieke woning laat ontstaan het en natuurlik wat sy met die koeistal gemaak het…
