Meet the new owners of

SPL ASH Magazine

B

rothers, Peter and Wouter van Schaik grew up in the Northern suburbs of Cape Town. Their parents had a beach house in Onrus, so the Hermanus area was home away from home on weekends and school holidays. “Both of us will call this home before our Cape Town home” would be the answer if you asked either of them what they would call home

Peter has recently fulfilled his dream of living in this little corner of paradise and has since settled permanently in Onrus by taking over from Mariska du Preez as the managing partner of Splash Magazine. After he matriculated and Studied in George he spent 6 years Living and working in the Netherlands. It was here that he started dabbling in printed media. He took up studying graphic and web design part time and on his return to South Africa he started pursuing this actively. He worked as a printing rep and freelance web designer in Cape Town on his return and this was where he first met the previous owners of Splash. Peter was Splash’s printing rep for quite a few years and his friendship with the Du Preez family grew and grew. He has been present at every year’s Splash function up to date and as soon as Mariska decided to accept the new possibilities that came her way, Peter was the first person she contacted if he would like to take over Splash from her. Wouter, the younger sibling, after he matriculated joined his brother in the Netherlands to go and study Law at the

University of Amsterdam. Afterwards he studied Accountancy via Unisa and today is a qualified CA. Wouter is currently working as a Financial director for a group of companies in Paarl. He will be looking at the financial management of Splash. Art has mainly been the focus of Splash Magazine and they intend to keep it that way. The cover of Splash Magazine is what make people see and recognize it. Being involved in the community has always been a part of Splash and will remain so. We intend to bring the “Odd Socks” drive to Hermanus and the Overberg to help homeless people keep warm in wintertime, to name just one… They assure advertisers and readers to keep the current level of quality and take the magazine to new heights. “We have seen the Splash magazine grow from issue one until now... Been at all the SPLASH Party’s for the last four years and we will carry on with the tradition. We intend to keep the same quality that Mariska and Jean build, but adding some extra goodies, so watch this space…” Peter said. “We hope that the community and our clients wil keep supporting Splash under our management as you did the Du Preez family. We wil strive to deliver the same quality in community news, arts, crafts, wine, food, health and body as the magazine has always done.” “Together with all the Splash readers and clients we wish Mariska, Jean and the kids all the best on their future endeavour and new beginnings.”

a Slice of Italy

I

have to say, that I was so impressed with the new Italian owner of Rossi’s since the day I met him, Cedric is genuine, straightforward and down to earth. A natural restaurateur, he has many success stories under his belt. There is no hype, as it simply isn’t necessary – fact is fact. Born & bred in Italy, Cedric has spent years perfecting the art of good food. The day we tried his food this became very evident. We started with

@ Rossi’s

to perfection. Cedric uses the only

for all his Veil dishes. This dish was accompanied by a variety of freshly steamed veggies, which for me is always a winner. I thought this was a great lunch time option. THEN… it was dessert time – which is a good enough reason in and of itself to visit Rossi’s!! Cedric delighted us with two desserts – As a self confessed ‘chocolate, fudge & caramel lover’, the ‘Semifreddo Al’amaretto’ was my favourite! This Semifreddo was so well done, it had all the nuances of ice-cream, whilst holding true to the classicly done semi-frozen dessert. with is awesome sauce and crushed amaretto biscuits this was so so good! We also tried the ‘Panna Cotta Ai Frutti Di Bosco’, this white soft cream pudding looked so

pretty to me, topped with the wild berry sauce. It was smooth and creamy, whilst not being overly sharp with the berries. The entire experience at Rossi’s was fantastic. They have an extensive wine list, compiled from all our amazing local wines, which we tried with our meal at their knowledgeable suggestion of what went best with what we had. Cedric and his team all have a keen eye for detail, and their friendly attentiveness was at Rossi’s! - Leigh Potgieter

the huge looking Mas Calzone, this closed pizza, though looking quiet intimidating, was actually soft, dough recipe from Italy – heavy, stodgy dough is a thing of the past at Rossi’s. The ‘Mas Colazone’ and Latino Mozarella, which was then topped with Rocket & Parma Ham. The cheeses with this dough is heavenly, it literally melted in my mouth! These

never have ordered for myself, but something I will ‘Scalopine Alla Valdostana’, which was very good. was new to me and very tasty, I thought is was a type of bacon, but it is not; it is a type of cured ham, it is then topped with Mozarella and grilled

Quiche @ Yves’s preserve, brie cheese and caramalised onions. You can enjoy this with or without a green salad. While you lunch you can enjoy a beautiful view of the ocean. Yvette told us that the selection of pies are baked daily at her parents’ house in Kleinmond. They also have a big selection of cakes. There is something to satisfy everyone in your family’s taste buds... - Hanneke van Schaik

iep asem in… Blaas stadig uit. Soos hulle op die “health” plaas sê: In with the good, out with the bad. S-t-a-d-i-g… Daar’s hy… (sê ek in ’n romerige melksjokolade stem) Ja, jy kan maar ontspan… 2013 is verby.

Flippen Uiteindelik! (oops kom my growwe rasperstem nou na vore!)

Suck it up and Live with it. So…. Behalwe my waardigheid, nie veel nie. So as julle my weer hoor is dit ‘diep asem in… blaas stadig uit’… want dan is ek terug in my Pilates klas… as my instruktrise my sal terugvat… For the English readers who complain that they don’t understand Afrikaans, let me summarize the above. 2013 sucked! Enough said. I’m not big on New Years Resolutions basically because I’m totally pathetic at sticking to anything that vaguely resembles some kind of routine. There’s nothing more demoralising than being proven a flop on the 2nd of January. However this year I’m prepared to take my chances. Again. And if I put it on paper and share it with the 9000 odd SPLASH Readers maybe just maybe I’ll be able to guilt-trip myself into following a more healthoriented routine.

But then, the experts tell you not to stop drinking/ smoking/eating for someone else otherwise you will always blame this other person for forcing you to give up your favourite vice. (You can sense that my devious mind is already looking for an out clause.)

Frankly I just want to look younger – so it’s more about the vanity than the health, but hey, at least I’m not giving up without a fight. So here goes:

New years Resolution No 1.

EXERCISE! No Gyms need apply. I’m that lazy woman in the baggy tracksuit sitting in the parking lot thinking of reasons why I don’t have time to go to the gym today. I need to buy stock for the shop, (ja, okay it’s 7 in the morning so no suppliers are open yet). I forgot to feed the dogs, I had breakfast and it’s bad for your health to exercise on a full stomach… Okay okay I admit, I’m just too damn lazy and I should never have taken that special offer of buy 24 months and get a free sportsbag. Now I’m just going to feel guilty for wasting money and I’m still flabby and unhealthy. I think I have made my point. I don’t like the Gym. No offence gym people, I am merely a flawed human being and you are all fit and fabulous and I’m seriously envious. But life is just way too short for 100 sit ups.

New years Resolution No 2. Only do things that give me joy.

New years Resolution No 3. Only do things that give me joy.

New years Resolution No. 4.

If you have no joy refer to points 2 and 3.

New Years Resolution No 5.

Phone my Pilates Instructor and beg her to take me back! Dankie Tessa!

New Years Resolution No 6.

Vetrolletjies inkluis. Happy New Year!

Dameskring se Fynbos-tak in Durbanville gaan betrokke raak by Laerskool Attie van Wyk. Mooi loop! Amanda de Stadler

to happen here as is happening in the UK and so many other countries such as America? Well I say NO….. So what is the solution? Most of these overweight children come from overweight families and of course we the parents are as a whole responsible for the food we give them. We are the ones that buy and prepare the foods, so if we are out of shape and eating the wrong foods then so are they. If we are going to live a sedentary life of siting in from of the TV with no exercise then our kids are going to follow suit. Yes technology does play a part in this sedentary life as it’s so much less hassle for us to let our children sit in front of the TV, playstation, X-box, computer or on their cell phones all day, anything for a bit of quiet after a hard days work, but really we are not doing them any favours for their future. So, simple, CHANGE THINGS AS A FAMILY. Unfortunately too, children do not have to participate in exercise after school anymore, they may get 1 or 2 hours of PT during the week, but this is not enough. WHO (the World Health Organization) recommends that children exercise for 60mins a day to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

One of our most experienced Personal Trainers, Michelle Halford and I have been discussing at length the tragedy of the growing international pandemic of obesity but specifically the sad phenomenon of childhood obesity which has statistically escalated as a result of this instant, media and electronic dominated world we now all live in where it is almost deemed 'uncool' to do anything physical like playing outside like most of us used to do when we were kids, so we have decided to make 2014 the year where we as a team of health professionals will focus our combined energy and expertise on our children right here in Hermanus so that we can make a meaningful difference and thereby secure a brighter and more healthy quality of life for them! When I asked Michelle to jot down her thoughts on paper so that we can publish our game-plan in Splash, she jumped at the opportunity and this is what she has to say to us as parents whose ultimate responsibility it is to control the health of our children: "I was shocked the other day as I was driving to work when on KFM radio they reported that Health experts issued a stark warning that a sizable proportion of British children are at risk of dying before their parents due to their poor diets and a lack of exercise. The study, which analyzed national health data as provided by the NHS and other sources, found that among children and young people under 16, 30% are overweight or obese. In addition, around 80% of kids in the UK are missing eating their recommended minimum of five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, while only a minority are doing anywhere close to the recommended levels of daily exercise. All this points to one very concerning fact: the fifty year trend of declining cardiovascular disease in the UK could reverse itself and even lead to kids today dying before their parents. Ok so this is happening in the UK so it doesn’t affect us right? but then I thought to myself how many times have I gone to pick up my kids from school and seen a very large percentage of overweight South African children getting into their parents cars and being handed a pie or cake. Do we really want the same thing

Make weight loss a family affair.. Want to get your overweight child to lose weight, but don't know how? Do the same thing yourself. This is the main finding from a new study of 80 overweight or obese children and their parents. When parents lost weight, their kids did, too. For each one unit decrease in the parent's body mass index or BMI, children lost one quarter of a BMI unit. Children do need to snack and it is also recommended that they eat 6 meals a day. Doctors say that snacks are really important for kids as they have smaller stomachs and high energy needs but too many calories can lead to obesity. Experts say that even an extra 165 calories a day of the wrong food roughly the amount contained in a packet of chips can have a big impact on their health, so opt for more nutritious snacks like apple slices, dried fruit, seeds and nuts with less salt, MSG and sugars to keep them on the go. Talk to your children about how the right foods fuel their bodies and get them thinking about smarter snacks and making better choices for themselves. After all children absorb information educate them now so that as adults they can make the right choices for their children, your future grandchildren. You can find a whole load of information about healthy snacks on the web check this link out to give you some ideas for snacks www.parents.com/todlers-preschoolers/ feeding/heathy-eating/the-20-best-snacks-for-kids/ " As you can tell, Michelle Halford speaks passionately on behalf of all of us who work at Proactive as we gear up our combined effort and commit as a team to get you and your children into peak physical and mental condition at the start of this brand new year! So lets start by changing our eating habits and getting out there as a family for a walk or even better join Proactive Fitness as a family and commit to get fit! Watch this space as we will be launching our new family & youth focused weight loss & fitness competition in February and we have called it: "TEENAGE TRANSFORMERS!" If you are interested in finding out more about this exciting new energy packed, family focused training program then make sure you call me before the end of January 2014. Vaginal steaming ( V- S t e a m , vagina facial) is an ancient method used to address a variety of ladies health issues. It is a re-emerging trend that is also known as ‘Chai Yok’ in Korea and ‘Bajos’ in Central and South America. Vaginal steaming can be thought of as a herbal steam facial for the vagina.

Why vaginal steaming? Vaginal steaming can be used to relieve stagnation and coldness in the body. It helps boost blood circulation to the pelvis, which increases the oxygenation and dilation of the blood vessels. This helps relax the pelvic floor muscles that tend to cramp or spasm before or during menstruation. The way it improves health depends on the herbs that are used and the healing properties they offer. A vaginal steam can help detox and heal imbalances in the vagina, cervix and uterus. Vaginal steaming has also been known to ease anxiety in women and tackle several other health issues such as: · Vaginal cysts · Bladder and yeast infections · Haemorrhoids · Uterine fibroids · Scarring from child birth · Irregular and painful periods · Perineal tears

When should a vaginal steam be taken? Typically, but not necessarily, the vaginal steam is performed a day or two after a woman has ended her menstrual cycle.

How does the vaginal steam work? For the steaming, one sits on a sterilised gel toilet seat that is fixed atop the steamer. A cape is draped around the waist to prevent steam escape. The steamer is turned on and the herb (mugwort) infused steam is then adjusted to a comfortable level, which also prevents scalding. Typically, a vaginal steam lasts for 30 minutes. Important to note about vaginal steaming! · Vaginal steaming should be avoided by those who are pregnant or believe that they may be pregnant. Cost – R300 at Diminish

THE NEW PRODUCT THAT IS TAKING HOLLYWOOD BY STORM!!! Derma Pen micro-needling – R1000 per treatment with FREE manicure This is a non-surgical method for tissue rejuvenation and regeneration. It can be used to treat: • Wrinkling • Acne scarring • Uneven skin texture • Follicular scarring – ‘enlarged pores’ • Skin rejuvenation • Surgical scars on the face and body • Larger scars such as C-section scars • Accidental and traumatic scars ● What is Cryolipolysis? Non-invasive procedure that effectively removes fat from targeted areas that have not responded to diet and exercise. Cryolipolysis cools the fat to a temperature below 0 degree C, which in turn destroys the fat cells but not the surrounding tissue. The exposure to cooling is set so that it causes cell death of subcutaneous fat tissue without apparent damage to the overlying skin. This procedure is most effective for the abdomen, love handles, saddle bags and bra bulges. R750

LOSS PROGRAMME

How does this work? ► What is Reshape? Reshape is a weight loss program that primarily focus on fat loss. By using Lipolytic in combination with a very low calorie diet you will lose up to 30% more abnormally stored fat as opposed to a reduced calorie diet on its own. ► What is Lipolytic? Lipolytic is a natural product that will trigger lipolysis (breaking down fat) and blocking lipogenesis (absorbing energy into fat cells) if combined with a reduced calorie diet. ► How does it work? The combination of the medication and the specially formulated eating plan will trigger the body to tap into your abnormal fat stores as a source of energy. By tapping into your fat reserves you will release a substance called leptin that will trigger your satiety centre in your brain and give you a feeling of “fullness”. Lipolytic also increases your serotonin (happy hormone) levels thus increasing your mood. The end result being: • Weight Loss (fat loss) • increased energy levels • Decreased hunger • Increased in mood ► Can anyone do the program? Because it’s a natural product it is safe and has no side effects. However you have to see your doctor to rule out any medical cause for your weight problem.

omen have a naturally nurturing personality and as such we so often focus on the needs on others without tendering to our own needs. We are no use to anyone, when our vessel is empty and we have nothing to give. Studies have shown that an adult cannot teach a child self esteem if they themselves have no self esteem. What greater gift can we give our children to arm them for this world than confidence and a great self esteem. And so it all begins with you! Make 2014 “YOUR YEAR”. LOVE , NUTURE AND CARE FOR THE VENUS WITHIN; you’ll probably find that everyone else shows you more respect and are happier knowing that the homemaker is well.

“When you assess your own life, consider it with the eye of a gardener. Underneath the surface lies rich, fertile soil waiting to nurture the seeds you sow. Even more than you can imagine will grow there if given a chance.” - Steve Goodier

So often at our clinic we meet ladies who suddenly after 60 or 70 years begin taking care of themselves. Perhaps a partner has died and suddenly we don’t have to care for them. Perhaps after years of an abusive relationship we say NO MORE! What a shame to have to wait so long. They say slowly slowly you catch the monkey and certainly as far as your skin is concerned; it is way more beneficial to pamper and look after skin from a young age than to wake up one day with wrinkles, sun spots and skin damage. Look after your skin; heal your body from the inside out and from the outside in. So where do I begin. The idea of approaching a clinic which is geared to nurture the face and pamper, may be a foreign concept to some; one might not know where to begin or what one’s needs are. It’s for this reason that Refine offers a private consultation with the Skin Therapist as well as with the doctor. These consultations are free, gratis. The consultations are just that. They are not prescriptive as the client has just as much input as the therapist to decide what the best treatments are to suit one’s skin, time schedule and of course one’s budget. 2013 was certainly a challenging year. Refine underwent many changes; new therapists, new treatments, a full time doctor, new machine and rooms. Change is an opportunity for growth and reassessing goals. 2014 also promises to bring rejuvenation and change to Refine. While we will

The story of the Morris Minor 1000 British motor manufacturer and philanthropist WILLIAM RICHARD MORRIS (later LORD NUFFIELD) was born in 1877 in Worcester, England. At the age of 15 he left school and began working in a bicycle shop in Oxford, first as a repairer and maker of bicycles, then of motor cycles and finally of cars. In 1912 he designed the first Morris car . He was the founder of the Morris Motor Company and founder of the Nuffield Foundation and Nuffield College, Oxford. Designed under the leadership of Sir Alec Issigonis, more than 1.3 million Morris Minors were manufactured between 1948 and 1972, becoming Britain's first million seller motorcar. The Minor prototype had been known as the

Morris Mosquito. Sir Alec’s concept was to combine the luxuriant convenience of a good motor car at a price affordable by the working classes. The Minor was a roomy vehicle with superior cornering and handling characteristics, produced mainly in Cowley, Oxfordshire. Initially available as a two-door saloon and tourer (convertible), the range was subsequently expanded to include a four-door saloon in 1950, and in 1952 a woodframed estate (the Traveller), panel van and pick-up truck variants. Production continued in Birmingham, England until 1972 (for the commercial variants and estate only). The last Morris Minor (commercial) was assembled at Stoke, Nelson, New Zealand in 1974.

Today the Morris Minor 1000 are among the best served classic family-sized cars in the old vehicle movement and continue to gain popularity. The enduring affection for the "Moggie" (also a common British nickname for an undistinguished cat, or a Morgan) or "Morrie" (as it is often known in Australia and New Zealand) is reflected in the number of restored and improved Morris Minors currently running in Britain, Australasia, India as well as South Africa.

2. Manoeuvrability: Having a vacuum cleaner that is easy to get around is essential and make sure it is not heavier than 5kg. Look for wheels that have a 360-degree swivel – the undercarriage of Miele’s vacuum cleaners for example, have three high quality, smooth running castors, making the cleaner extremely stable and very easy to guide around obstacles and over thresholds.

Most of us do not want to cut corners when it comes to the cleanliness of our homes or the quality of the air we breathe, but we still want a compact and lightweight vacuum cleaner that is easy to store.

3 things to look for when investing in a vacuum cleaner

Welcome 2014! Your house guest have returned home, and all that’s left is sea-sand. On the rugs, on the floor, on the carpets and in the car. The fond memories of time on the beach with family, now seems like old news. Whilst I know cleaning up is not much to look forward to, in fact you will find me stove-side any day pottering around in my kitchen, rather than laying a finger on the vacuum cleaner. But I have to admit, that there is a most satisfying feeling gained from straightening out your home , especially after what could have been mistaken for a sandstorm right there in your living room. Below I share with you what makes MIELE a great cleaning companion. Today, the vacuum cleaner has evolved into a high-tech piece of cleaning equipment, boasting many other uses apart from merely cleaning the floor. However, it is important to remember that not all vacuum cleaners are created equal – as such, it is essential to know what features makes a vacuum cleaner great. Below I offer some tips on what one should look for when investing in a vacuum cleaner:

1. Suction power: Vacuum cleaners work through suction that is created by a built-in motor. The stronger the motor, the stronger the suction power it creates. But the size of the engine is not the most important predictor of how efficient your vacuum cleaner will be. More importantly, one should ensure that your cleaner is perfectly sealed from the floor head through to the body, thus creating powerful, efficient suction. Imagine trying to suck your milkshake through a broken straw – frustrating! A good way to asses the suction power of a machine is to test it out: We like to do the following demonstration to show what powerful suction power our Miele vacuum cleaners have: switch the machine on maximum power, now attach the floorhead to the wall – if it boasts superior suction power, it should stay there on its own.

Miele cleaners are safe and simple to transport from your broom cupboard to wherever you may need them in the house. Miele has a practical bracket on the underside, where you can attach the wand, including the hose, and carry the whole unit with one hand. Should you have to master a set of stairs, it gives you a free hand to hold on to a railing.

A long, retractable power cable is also essential, as it enables the cleaning of large areas without having to change power outlets. Miele vacuum cleaners, feature a very long retractable power lead, that combined with the suction tube, operate within a radius of up to 11m. 3. Longevity: It is very important to take into account how long your vacuum cleaner will last for – you may pay more for it initially, but if it is built to last, you will save money in the long run. With Miele, I am confident that nobody tests as diligently as they do. For any parts and components to be included in a Miele product, they have to meet very stringent quality requirements and prove that they will endure 20 years of average household use.

For a vacuum cleaner this is defined as one hour per week or 50 hours per year. Testing includes: dropping the floor head 1 800 times, which equates to approximately twice per week; extending the telescopic wand 10 000 times, which is equal to 10 times per week; dragging the barrel by the hose over a threshold (such as a cable or rug) and banging it against a door frame 20 000 times, we believe that this would happen up to 20 times per week in a customer household; and kinking the hose 120 000 times with a 5kg weight, this equates to more than 100 times per week. One final point I just have to mention is “quiet operation”, as many vacuum cleaners can be overbearingly noisy: Visit Goozi and ask for the “vacuum against the wall test” and come and hear for yourself how pleasantly silent vacuum cleaning can be!

y favourite time of the year, in my favourite place: all the visitors (or most of them anyway) have gone home and we have our town and village back to our-

Do not misunderstand me, we welcome the holiday makers. Some share our little piece of paradise, once a year, when they come to their holiday homes. Some pass by for the weekend and others stay a bit longer. But ,boy oh boy, are we aware of their presence. Cars, dogs, cyclers, runners and lots of children. They, for sure change our daily lives. Then on one good day , they’re gone again. The beach is empty, except for my and Sebastian’s foodprints on the wet sand on our morning walks. My seat at Oskar is open again, for coffee and croissant. Slowly everything gets back to normal again. The weather is at it’s the best, this time of the year. Long lazy summer days with sun-

sets that you want to paint very time you look at them. For me, it’s outside time, garden time. Breakfast in the back garden, where I watch the little white- eyes drink the pink water from the bird bottle. Listening to the sweet birdsongs. Smelling the sea and becoming still in the silence that surrounds me. Magical evening dinners with candlelight in the front garden. Appreciating the coolness of the mountain mist after a long and heated day. Looking forward to the next perfect day. Or simply a cup of tea in a cherished spot of the garden. The natural existence of the garden, surrounded by ancient oak trees become different rooms. Creating space, in the same manner as inside: placing tables, chairs and garden ornaments. Using what is around me, balancing rooms in which furniture is pared down to the minimum and simple set off out in unfussy

way. Making the space inviting and comfortable. Choosing things that are authentic, harmonising with the plants for unaffected charm. Letting the colour of the flowers spark off another. Simple touches, full of character to give the garden a sense of purpose. A slatted wooden table, house a variety of flowers, styled with a beach photograph, printed on canvas and framed in old ceiling boards. The rusted wire birdcage used as a plant holder. Between the oak tree and cypresses, this piece of garden furniture, became the centrepiece of this ‘room’. Pairing of ornaments on the other wall, poise the space. The painted wall has a new purpose now and looking out of the window, a magical picture greets you every day. A very cherished spot, for reading, sitting on the garden bench. Grouping old enamel cans alongside a blue shutter, decorate the stone wall, near the entrance to the house… blurring boundaries between inside and out.

Hanging fabric from the pergola, to keep a bit of the sun out, for an afternoon of tea, framing the star jasmine and creating a impression of depth. This room, or shall I say; the pergola, the perfect place for candlelit dinners, alfresco or the odd braai , when having friends over. A room with a view A summer’s night fulled with scented flowers, tumbling spontaneous from pots or buckets The most wonderful memories are of times shared, meals enjoyed, joyful colours, peaceful places. Good health, relaxation, comfort, nurture, friendship and love – these are the elements of good living. It’s in these elements where new beginnings are made and love flourishes to music and laughter. Let this new year have lots of scents from the garden. Living well in simple pleasures ELMARIE DE WAAL…..Designee Décor

TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE... I’m dreaming. I’m House hunting. But not for property to buy A house to have, Or investment to possess… I’m simply looking for a home. A place of my very own. A home to live in To enjoy and to dwell in. And then, I’m a lover of the outdoors…of nature and mountains and sea; And houses with natural finishes With open spaces and spiral staircases; White kitchens, fireplaces and mantelpieces. There’s something about window sashes and wooden shutters, Sliding doors, patios and sparkling pools; Courtyards, birds and fenced in gardens. I love the crackling sound in the fireplace, The smell of waxed teak floors… And views from bathrooms, decks and sliding doors! As I stroll down a quiet street of Vermont, I’m awakened from daydreaming when I notice this eye catcher of a home. I’m immediately magnetically drawn closer to this interesting, typical Cape styled property, existing of two dwellings fenced in on one piece of land that can be subdivided. I feel welcome as I walk onto the neat terracotta patio that leads into an open space living and dining room area, with a charming wooden spiral staircase leading upstairs. The open plan white kitchen feels fresh and clean, and the doors that open into the garden bring bird song to the inside, and simultaneously draw me to the trees outside where I imagine having breakfast under them the next morning… The guest bedroom with en suite bathroom is enough to convince me to stay for the night. Such a homely atmosphere, warm and sunny, is not often to be found.

My hand catches a grip on the corner pole of the spiral staircase and I swing upstairs…quite an easy flight to master…and there I am on the landing! It is quiet up here; peaceful and private exactly what you want if you are a passionate lover of tranquillity like me. This study is any author or book lover’s dream…and just a little further you can `actually start dreaming in the beautiful bedroom; plan a pamper in the comfortable family bathroom… Another surprise awaits me as I am invited onto the patio, to view mountains and gardens, and enjoy the fresh ocean breeze sweeping over this beautiful village. I go back to the spiral staircase, and as I enjoyed my ascending, I smile at myself as I swirl downstairs…nice! The neatly terracotta tiled north facing patio, is covered and equipped with a built-in braai for the perfect entertainment area. Just before I could flop down to enjoy the homely atmosphere of the beautiful lounge, I’m invited from the main house into a courtyard…of a second dwelling!

Curiously I run upstairs with the tiled staircase, where some more secrets await me…and ah man, the aroma of solid teak floors, polished and shining under my feet! Lovely fire place, surrounded by an antique mantel piece! What a warm, homely area this is… Stack away doors lead me to a balcony, from where the picturesque chain of mountains unfolds before me. This can serve perfectly as a complete home; with double bedroom, lounge, dining room, open plan kitchen, built in cupboards and en suite bathroom. I slowly go back downstairs, and slowly recalculate… I notice the drive through garage, large enough to incorporate a workbench, and with direct access to the house. There is a scullery and bathroom here, and this can convert into a small granny flat …I think quietly. I notice the lovely clean pool, the koi pond, the borehole, the underground tanks, where 15,000 l of water is shyly hidden away. The solar panel and geyser are neatly fitted. “Listen,” someone said, “the pool is heated, with extra pump to swim against the current… and some furniture will stay… and the land can be subdivided, exactly between the two dwellings…” I turn around pretending a deaf ear…finding my way in to the garden, back to the gate. I know how easily I can be seduced into this one! Then I stop to think again. I talk to myself…think now. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Two houses for the price of one? And how sensible the layout is done…you can still add on some ‘house’ at the back, if you like!

Two houses for R3,600,000. Two families who needk to be together, and still be in the privacy of their own fenced in property! Or a guest house? I could earn some money here! Or would you, perhaps? Aah…I’ll give you a chance first. Shall I make an appointment for you to view? Call me!

hat a privilege it is to live in Hermanus, our quirky town with its two harbours; a railway station that's never seen a train; the smallest Floral Kingdom in the world; a coastal path that spans the town end-to-end; a lookout point called Die Gang (a name that never ceases to baffle our English visitors!) and a clutch of unique annual festivals, including a first from Hermanus Tourism - Hermanus FynArts that took place for the first time in 2013. The programme for the second Hermanus FynArts is forging ahead and will be crammed with an even wider variety of offerings. Remember to save the dates 6 16 June 2014. We all know this place is special and that it is a magnificent backdrop against which we live our lives, even though we sometimes look right passed the mountains, the fynbos, the sea, the cliffs, the whales, the birds, our history, our people - if not the baboons. One of the reasons why being 'in tourism' is so rewarding is that each day our visitors, whether first-timers or returns, remind us how fortunate we are to live here; remind us over and over and over again what a unique spot this is. Even when the wind roars and the rain dumps.

During the dry summer season Overstrand Fire & Rescue and Disaster Management experience an increase in veld fires. Veld fires normally run out of control if we don’t react immediately. An estimated 90% of veld fires are started by humans and 10% are started by natural occurrences such as lightning. Fire danger rating system The fire danger rating is used to calculate daily the fire danger index value. The forecast index of fire danger is then entered into a fire danger table. The table classifies fire danger rating into five categories. • Blue – The fire danger is low and no precaution is needed • Green – Prescribed burns may be allowed in open air • Yellow – The fire danger is such that no fires may be allowed in open air except those that are authorized by the Chief Fire Officer of the local fire service and those in designated fireplaces; authorized fires may include prescribed burns • Orange – The fire danger is such that no fires may be allowed under any circumstances in the open air • Red – the fire danger is such that no fires may be allowed under any circumstances in the open air, and special emergency fire preparedness measures must be invoked

Insignificant

Instead of hoping that 2014 - or 2015 or 2016 - will be a bumper year, let's rather commit to working together to grow a bumper future: one that is sustainable, representative and proud of its heritage. And whether we measure such a 'bumper future' by the valuation of property, business turnover and profit, the wellbeing of our neighbouring areas or by the efficiency and effectiveness of Municipal services it doesn't matter, because each of these must contribute to making Hermanus one of the most desirable places to live. Add to all of this, the richness of our natural environment which includes a patch of mountain with a greater variety of flora/sq metre than can be found anywhere else on the planet; blue flag beaches; a milkwood forest; plenty of adventure activities and sports; a profusion of birds and whales, award winning wines, good restaurants, art galleries and coffee shops and you have the first among prime destinations to attract tourists and visitors.

Low Moderate High Extreme

What should I do to reduce my risk of veld fire? You can prevent a fire from affecting your home and family • If possible, make firebreaks around your home, trim branches well clear of the house. Clear roof and gutters of leaves, twigs etc. • Remove all rubbish, leafs litter and shrubs growing too close to house. Keep grass short and green. • Store wood, fuel, paints etc. Well clear of the house. • Decide on a household plan to either leave early or stay to protect your home during a veld fire Respect and awareness of Emergency Operations The police, traffic officials and fire fighters do their best to avert the dangers form veld fires and to protect the public and motorists from these dangers. They also control crowds near the emergency scenes and will provide the most convenient detour for traffic when roads are closed. It is important that motorists obey and pay close attention to these officials. The following should be kept in mind: • Move over when you see flashing lights at the side of the road or the presence of emergency vehicles or fire engines! • Try to stay at least 200 meters from the emergency vehicle. • If an emergency exists ahead, it may be dangerous to the public to drive through the area. • People who drive into an emergency scene may collide with a fire engine, or worse, a firefighter. • Slow down when approaching an emergency scene

Warnings of possible veld fires are normally communicated by the weather office, radio station or on TV. Your local fire station can also be contacted. A warning is only as good as your reaction to it! Precautions to veld fires Certain short; medium; and long term measures can be taken to ensure that we lessen the possibility of veld fires.

So, let's get the word out about our town!

Fire breaks

Visitors, holiday makers, tourists and, of course, those of you who live here, reach for your cell phones, tablets and computers and share all there is to enjoy about Hermanus on social media networks.

A firebreak is a strip of land where vegetation has been removed or modified to contain or to reduce the spread and intensity of any veld fire that may occur in or enter a property.

It's free! It's effective! It's quick! And for those of you who don’t tweet, and don't use Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest or email, there is always the telephone …

When is a firebreak necessary?

Hermanus Tourism wishes residents and visitors a wonderful 2014.

Various projects are under taken to curb alien plant invasions in Overstrand Area. Through this programme alien plant species are removed which contributes to more soil moisture and less fuel that can burn.

• Be patient and keep in mind that fire and emergency personnel did not create the emergency, they did not cause the accident and they did not start the fire • Detouring traffic may cause everything to slow down, but it is better getting through slowly instead of getting stuck. NEW BEGINNINGS All fires can be prevented and we need to change the behaviour of our community. Fire services world wide need to change from a reactive service to a more proactive service. Awareness

Landowners are required to prepare firebreaks on their side of the boundary where there is a reasonable risk of veld fire.

Fire and Life Safety awareness campaign is already in place for the Overstrand area and need to be strengthened .Partnership between the community and the Fire Service need to be strengthen.

Removing alien plants

Prevention

One of the main contributors to veld fires in South Africa is the presence of alien plants.

Currently risk visits are conducted and land owners need to reduce their fire load

The year has drawn to a close and we can reflect back on what we have accomplished in the last 12 months. There were days of sorrow when we reacted to callouts but father time was against us, where we could not save a life but we could give the body back to his or her family so they can have closure. There were days of hard work where our crew worked tirelessly to keep the base and boats in mint condition for the next call. Then there were days and nights of training to keep our crew ready for whatever may the next callout may be. Then there are those days when time is on our side, where we find that loved one, after 10 hours of floating in the sea and we can bring them back to their families, where we can reunite them and see the tears of happiness, these are the times that make you come back the next day to do what we do. SAVING LIVES AT SEA And this is all done at no charge. Thanks to organizations like Splash Magazine who for the last two years made the NSRI their Non profitable organization of choice and donated a wonderful amount of R80 00 through their art and wine auctions. It is organizations like Splash that make it possible for us to carry on doing what we do. We would like to say thank you to all who supports us, the cents that is dropped into our collection boats and donations that is made in many forms. Have a wonderful holiday and be safe out there, make sure we start the New Year with all our loved ones by our side. Always just take a minute to think before you do, it might just save your life and make sure you save our emergency number on your phone, 021 449 3500. We wish each and every person out there a wonderful Christmas and may the year ahead bring you joy and happiness. May the year ahead be a HAPPY NEW YEAR. From the crew of Station 17, Hermanus. on their property. Better housekeeping on properties also needs to be considered. Safe usage of electricity, LPG and paraffin is of outmost importance. Buildings should comply with the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act, 1977 (act no. 103 of 1977) Preparedness Overstrand Fire & Rescue need to ensure that they provide an effective and efficient emergency response as set out in legislation to create a safe environment for every one. Therefore our main objectives are: 1. To Safe Lives 2. To Protect Property from fires and other dangers 3. To provide Humanitarian Service to the community. We would like to wish everyone a safe and productive 2014 . Overstrand Fire & Rescue

HERB

Fennel

HOME

A

n ancient, much respected herb, fennel has its roots so firmly embedded in lore and legend that no one is sure who actuallly used it firs. Native to the Mediterranean, where it thrives in the heat and the sun, this easily grown plant had spread into the rest of Europe by the Middle Ages and its medicinal powers were so revered that fennel seeds became a prized trade commodity spreading to India, China and Nort Africa by the 15th century.

Ordinary fennel, often treated as a biennial, is tough, resilient and prolific. Florence fennel is the one that has the swollen bulbous root stalk much loved in Italian Family Um belliferae and French cooking; this is Species Fo an annual. Bronze fennel is a eniculum vu lgare * F. vulgare beautiful dark maroon, almost var. Dulce black, variety of the ordinary Origin Med iterranean re fennel. The dark feathery leaves gions Plant annua l or biennial are particularly beautiful in the Height 1m; mixed border.. space 1m

apart Soil well-du g, wellcomposted soil Exposure fu ll sun Propagatio n seed Uses culina ry, medicina l, cosmetic

► CULTIVATION The three different fennels all have the same growing requirements: full sun, good compost-rich soil and a twice-weekly deep watering. ► PROPAGATION Fennel seeds germinate quickly and are best sown in seed trays from

spring onwards. Keep the seedlings moist and shaded and plant out when they are 10cm high. ► HARVESTING AND PROCESSING Pick flowers and seeds as they ripen. Reap Florence fennel as soon as the bulbous stem is about the size of a tennis ball. ► COMPANION PLANTING Don’t plant fennel near tomatoes, beans, kohlrabi, coriander, caraway or dill. They dislike one another! Rather grow fennel in the flower border away from the vegetable garden. ► USES OF FENNEL •Culinary All the fennels have a pleasant, slightly anise taste that goes beautifully with fish, pasta, cheese and poultry dishes. Finely chopped fresh leaves add a tantalizing note to ordinary dressings and dips, and finely chopped stems are superb in salads and stirfries. The flowers are edible and as appealing to the eye as to the tastebuds. The seeds, fresh green or dried, can be added to breads, biscuits and cakes or sprinkled on fish dishes and pastas. Thinly shaved Florence fennel bulb is an appetising addition to salads, stirfries, soups and fish dishes. •Medicinal Fennel is often known as the ‘slimmer’s herb’. It is an excellent diuretic, flushing out toxins from the body – take 2 cups of tea daily three or

four days in a row. Tea made from the leaves and stems reduce the effects of over-indulgence in food and alcohol. It is also excellent for constipation, heartburn, colic and respiratory ailments. To make the tea use ¼ cup fresh leaves or flowers and pour over this 1 cup boiling water. Stand for 5 minutes. Strain and sip slowly. Chewing fennel seeds will ease indigestion, flatulence and colic. •CosmeticFennel tea is an excellent treatment for oily problem skin. Pads of cotton wool wrung out in the warm tea will reduce puffiness and shadows around the eyes. A deep-cleansing fennel stem is a wonderfully simple method used by our grandmothers to get the skin really cleaned and refine pores. After too much partying, a fennel and salt bath is a lifesaver. •Other uses On the compost heap fennel quickly breaks down and with its fibrous stem it aerates the compost heap. Its strong oils make it an excellent foliar feed for pot plants and indoor plants. Add fennel to your dogs’ diet and sprinkle the seeds under his bedding to repel fleas.
