Taste Bud Pleasures Authentic Italian @ Fabio’s W

hen you think of an Italian restaurant, the first thing that comes to mind are stock-standard pizza and pasta options, the kind you get at most Italian franchised restaurants. But at Fabio’s, a unique Italian eatery in the heart of Hermanus, you realise right away that this restaurant is something special. Before you even sit down, you're welcomed by the most amazing smells and sounds that takes your imagination to a little table set for two in the heart of Italy. Fabio’s, an owner-run Italian restaurant, can boast as being the only accredited authentic Italian restaurant in the Overberg area by the Italian Chamber of Commerce. They've also received an award at the FNB Excellence awards in 2013. And the food certainly lives up the its reputation! The menu is extensive with options from specialty risottos, seafood soup, home-made pastas, delicious pizzas and decadent desserts. Feeling adventurous, we started with a taster platter of Coniglio (Rabbit), Porcini Mushroom Risotto, Gnocchi ai Tre Colori (3 different types of Gnocchi) and Gorgonzola Polenta. It was a feast for the taste buds. Everyone around the table had a different favourite, but mine had to be the mushroom risotto. It was perfectly cooked and had such depth of flavour. (I could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner – carbs be damned.) While for my main meal I had the Quattro Formaggi (Four cheese) pizza (thin base, no gorgonzola, extra fig please J). As a fussy eater, I was especially impressed with the friendly manner in which they accommodated my request. And in true authentic ‘Italian style’, our wine glasses were never empty and we were made to feel like part of the family – as the staff refer to themselves. Of course, no meal is complete without dessert, and ours was no exception. Among the many mouth-watering options to choose from, Fabio’s also makes their own Tiramisu and ice cream. So, we decided to end our night with home made ice cream or 'Gelato' (to die for, by the way!) and Italian imported Limonchello. Salute! Estelle du Toit

Valentynsdag 2014

Beste meisie van my drome

n wonder of ek ooit ’n kans staa uklike gesiggie voor my en ek verr jou sien , aak toem oë my As ek my om daaroor te droom nie… om jou liefde te wen. Niks keer As jy ja de sal my gelukkiger maak nie. Valentyn te wees. Niks op aar eur. geb wat Nogtans wil ek jou vra om my kyk r maa by jou venster uit. Dan sal ons sê, hang vanaand ’n rooi serp Met ’n hart vol liefde Jou Valentyn

The Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse ladies have chosen “Kids Can” as a very worthwhile NGO to support and all the proceeds from the Practice Walk will go to “Kids Can” to help them keep up this excellent work.

Put on your walking shoes and join the Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse Ladies Practice walk All funds generated from the practice walk will go towards KIDS CAN Saturday, 22 February, 2014 Kleinmond Beach to Meer en See Meet at Kleinmond Main Beach at 0730 for a beautiful walk along this wonderful part of our coastline. Cost:R100 (adult) u R50 (scholar)

Hi mysie van my droome As ek my oë toe maak sien ek jou awesome gesiggie voor my en ek wonder of ek eenige kans het om jou lievde te wen. Maar ek mag daar oor droom. Maar ek wil jou in any case vra om my Valentine te wees. No ways is daar iets wat my meer gelukkiger sal maak nie. Al my liefde Jou Valentine

Mooi loop! Amanda de Stadler

ENQUIRIES: Sheila Lyle 028 314 1390 or 073 778 2777 KidsCan! is a project of Kleinmond Child Welfare. The centre opened for Gr R to Gr 5 pupils on 15 February 2010. At present KidsCan! provides for 40 children by 2 paid teachers. About 14 volunteers are actively involved. None of the volunteers receives any remuneration. Apart from the Government subsidy and the nominal fee (R100 p.m.) paid by some of the parents, the committee raises funds to keep the Centre open. There are fourteen children on a waiting list, and there are about 1000 more children in need of after school care. Attendance is excellent and general discipline has improved tremendously. The improvement in the children’s numeracy and literacy ability is already visible. We also provide wonderful holiday programs with loads of activity. Target group: 3.1. The target groups of KidsCan! are: 3.1.1. Vulnerable unsupervised children from Grade R to 5. 3.1.2. All children recommended by Child Welfare who need supervision. 3.1.3. Children from all areas are welcome but at present the children are all from Proteadorp and Overhills areas of Kleinmond. 4.1. KidsCan! is a blessed organization where volunteers put in time without expecting anything back. When we visit the Centre and we see the children progressing and enjoying the attention of their teachers, we know it is the right thing to do.

“Liefde word nie gemeet aan die aantal kere wat julle mekaar aanraak nie, maar aan die aantal kere wat julle mekaar bereik" - Cathy Morancy Hier is ons alweer by Februarie 2014. Ons probeer nog herstel na al die kuiergaste en baie kos. We as a family, together with friends, celebrated the first day of the new year with our annual "potjie kos" competition. The tradition started many years back among our parents and their friends, but as it looked so much fun, our generation started to join in. This years winning couple was Antoinette du Preez and Joe de Wet. See our Taste bud pleasures on page 2 for Antoinette's winning recipe. It's a winning potjie, so no write-up needed, we just want the recipe please... Girls, on page 8 you can get tips on all the DO'S and DONT'S when it comes to planning your wedding day. Also have a look at the gorgeous DuVon wedding venue in Robertson. Guys, have a look at page 16 and 17 to see where to go for that special evening out. Ons het ook die jaarlikse Trans Agulhas kompetiesie gehad oor Desember en Januarie. Op bladsy 25 is fotos en al die uitslae van die jaar se strawwe resies. I wish all our readers a happy Valentines day and to give your love not only to our partners, but also to everybody aroud us.

race yourself, Sweetheart, Honey-bunny… Cutie-pie. This month you will be bombarded by ads for corny singing cards, heart-shaped chocolates and chubby cherubs. Yes, it’s the month of loooove, baby and apparently the 14th is yet another day that you’d better not forget or else your loved one/object of your desire will remove you from his/her Christmas List. I know! You’ve hardly recovered from the crazy Christmas spending and now you’re being manipulated into giving that special person over-priced roses that won’t last a week in the summer heat… Oh come on, don’t be such an unromantic miser. Now imagine yourself being the object of such a show of love and affection… Feels kinda nice doesn’t it? If I happen to have any secret admirers out there… (a girl can dream) here’s a tip:

Talitha’s flower creations are stunning - and we deliver. Which brings me to the man who triumphed over adversity and hatred because of his incredible capacity to love. And maybe he was able to forgive and love his fellow human beings exactly because of his ripe old age. Just like everything has been said and written about Valentine’s Day, so everything has been said about Nelson Mandela. Do you remember that feeling the whole country shared when he passed away last year? Saint Valentine would be proud of the love and generosity of spirit that most South Africans (and the world) shared – even if it was just for a brief period of time. Imagine if we could carry that feeling around within us – not just during a time when we mourn a great human being and not just on the 14th of February, but every day. Wow, that would be extraordinary… But then South Africans are extraordinary human beings. Have you noticed that even when South Africans are overseas they somehow manage to make their mark – as rocket scientists (quite literally!) designers, we have some of the best doctors, the best brains and not to mention the best rugby players. Okay second best but our guys are way more good-looking than the All Blacks. Being stuck in virtual isolation for so many years has forced us to become innovative. This past holiday season the most common comment I heard is that there simply aren’t shops like ours overseas. That’s because you can’t import that special creative energy that you find in Africa. Not to mention the natural optimism and friendliness that the average South African possesses. If you struggle with the optimism issue, paste a smile on your face. You’ll be surprised at how soon your face will get used to using these muscles… and even better, you will be rewarded with beaming smiles from the most unexpected people. And as usual, I digress. What do you plan on doing this Valentine’s? Be unpredictable, creative… be brave. Celebrate it like a true South African.

Just the other day an elderly grey-haired lady came into the shop. She had the energy and the demeanour of a sixteen year old. She was quite literally beaming. Turned out that she’d gotten married three days earlier. Bet you she’ll be getting something for Valentine’s. That’s the good news. Love has no age restrictions. In fact you can appreciate it even more the older you get…

I d ?!

So many brides worry and stress whilst planning their wedding. It causes unnecessary pressure and conflict. Be sure not to make the same mistake! We have ten tips that will make things so much easier when you start to plan your special day. Declare your wedding worries something of the past with “I won’t!” and “I don’t!” Saving the best for last.... “I DO!” So before you tie the knot, let’s look at a few practical pointers...

1

I won’t... stress about the weather. Come rain or shine, you cannot control the weather! So if it’s pouring outside or the wind is gushing at 35 knots. Try and make the most of Mother Nature’s choice of day. For instance, why not take advantage of a rainy day by taking pictures posing romantically underneath an umbrella or inside a historical wine cellar? Then again, beautiful dark blue clouds building behind you creates an astounding backdrop most photographers would only be too happy to capture!

2

I won’t... forget to draft a time schedule for the big day. You definitely don’t want to skip this one! Regardless of how reliable or punctual everyone may be. The best way to ensure that everything goes according to plan is to have a time schedule. From the exact time to go for hair & make-up, the opening of the dance floor, right down to the very last speech. If you don’t have a wedding planner, confer with your photographer or caterer in order to determine the flow of events. Oh’ and remember to schedule extra time for relaxation. You’ll need it!

3

I won’t... waste my time on tying bows and decorations. Delegate! Make sure your mom, bridesmaids, aunts, cousins, cousins’ cousins and even your soon-to-be mother in law knows exactly what is expected of them. And don’t you dare feel sorry for asking them to help or calling in favours. You’re allowed! If you’re not as fortunate to have any helping hands to take advantage of... Don’t worry about it!

Your guests will take no notice of half the favours not having identical bows. They will however pick up on you looking tired and stressed out. So whatever you don’t get done in time, just leave it be.

4

I won’t... skip a meal. Eat!?! Seriously, you have to eat breakfast the morning of your wedding. One meal will have no affect, whatsoever, on how your dress fits. It won’t matter how skinny or good you look should you be fainting at the altar! No need to order a super sized quarter pounder deluxe with extra fries but have something to eat.

5

I won’t... keep my guests waiting There’s nothing worse than waiting for the bride and groom whilst they are taking pictures with the photographer after the ceremony. Boring... Be clever! Make sure you take all the photos with your parents, bridesmaids and even uncle’s and aunt’s – before the ceremony. Be original! Organize entertainment for your guests during the waiting period. A brass band playing, a musician or even something fun like playing a game e.g. Giant Jenga, where guests are able to partake in the activity. You can also randomly place board games on the tables. This will allow your guests to keep themselves entertained.

6

I don’t ... want to bore my guests with lengthy speeches A heartfelt wedding speech can move you to tears. True. Then again, a bad speech can bore you to death! It might be difficult to deal with this one in a delicate manner in order not to hurt your loved ones’ feelings. Though, no one wants to be punished with a boring speech. Your uncle might be blabbering on and on (...and on) about how special everyone and everything (...and did he mention everyone...?) is and then even try to top it off with weird wedding jokes nobody (except himself being hysterical with laughter) seems to find it funny...? Truthfully the only “traditional” toasts are made by the best man as well as the “host” of the evening. Therefore, should the father-of-thebride be paying for the wedding – he’s got the right to the mike! (Fingers crossed he’s funny!)

7

e c n u o n o r “I now p d e i r r o w . . . u yo !” ? d e s s e r t s and

I won’t ... let family issues ruin my special day Let bygones be bygones. Chin up and be positive! Don’t allow family issues to spoil your special day. Make peace with the fact that you will never be able to please everyone. And noone should expect you to. This is YOUR day! Just enjoy it and feel the love!

8

I won’t ... drink too much champagne It’s quite normal to have a glass of champagne with your bridesmaids before the ceremony. Just be careful not to overdo it! Too much champers can cause you to appear flushed with red cheeks and eyes. You also don’t want to end up red in the face due to being a bit tipsy when standing at the altar. You want to remember every single special moment and always look your best.

Most of all drink in every moment of this special occasion and make memories that will stay with you forever! Should you keep focus and learn from these tips, you are only a few steps away from creating your perfect wedding day!

9

I won’t ... forget the importance of a MC The Master of Ceremony is (besides yourself and hubby-to-be) one of the most important figures at your wedding. He has to ensure that everything goes according to plan. Make sure you discuss every detail concerning your wedding day with him as well as ‘how’ everything is supposed to take place. He has to keep the guests informed and act as the link between the wedding coordinator and the caterer.

10

I won’t ... forget to embrace the moment! This is YOUR day! Only you are able to decide on what you like, want and how you want it. This is the day you are allowed to be selfish. It’s all about you! Listen to your heart and follow it!

Ski China

“Piste” is the French word for a ski run or slope – although, for many skiers, after a strenuous day’s skiing and a few refreshments too many, the word can sometimes acquire a somewhat different meaning! How long ago, and where, did skiing start? Well, two thousand years ago the Roman poet Virgil told of skiers in his poem Aenied, and in 1206 Birkebeiner soldiers on skis rescued Prince Haakon during the Norwegian Civil War. In 1992 a ski found in Sweden was dated to be 4,500 years old. And rock art in Norway, estimated to date from 3,500 BC, shows a man on some pretty big skis. In the 1960s a ski relic found in a peat bog in Russia near Vis dated back 8,000 years. But even older pictographs and stone carvings have been found in the Dundebulake river valley in the Altay Mountains of north-western China. These go back at least 10,000 years and maybe earlier. So, although China is not a country one generally associates with skiing its culture of skiing is ancient and today there are over 200 ski resorts nestled in the country’s five main mountain ranges. Piste Cats bring you the Changbaishan ski region, located in the Jilin Province and considered to be the most beautiful mountain area in Northeast China. ● What is Cryolipolysis? Non-invasive procedure that effectively removes fat from targeted areas that have not responded to diet and exercise. Cryolipolysis cools the fat to a temperature below 0 degree C, which in turn destroys the fat cells but not the surrounding tissue. The exposure to cooling is set so that it causes cell death of subcutaneous fat tissue without apparent damage to the overlying skin. This procedure is most effective for the abdomen, love handles, saddle bags and bra bulges. R750

PERMANENT MAKEUP

VALENTINES DAY!

Treat yourself and have beautiful kissable lips for Valentinesday! Transform your lips with a long–lasting lip enhancer that takes the hassle out of wearing lip-liner and lipstick and take your mouth to its lip-magnifying full potential. As early as your 30’s your lips start to get paler and the crispness of the natural boarder diminishes – causing your lips to loose their definition. During your 40’s the fullness reduces, the cupids bow straightens out and eventually gravity takes hold causing the corners of your mouth to drop.

Hemel & Aarde Village ● 028 316 3845 ● 083 240 8789

Getting the perfect lip shape in these demanding circumstances is time consuming and something that you have to do repeatedly throughout the day. A ‘Lip Blush’ or ‘Full Lips’ Treatment enhances the colour of your lips with a lip-stain look, perfects your lip shape, discreetly redefines your natural lip boarder and if desired gives the illusion of fullness.

This may be the month of love, but the love handles must go! Body sculpting, skin tightening ... so many options; so many machines but what is the best option for the result you require?

I

n terms of skin tightening, the most advanced and safe treatment on the market currently is the “tri-polar radiofrequency(RF) machines”; (TRIO XT; Thermage etc). The way in which it works is initially destroying collagen contraction through both mechanical and biochemical pathways. As a result the deep delivered energy into the skin causes collagen remodelling through the wound healing response. This new collagen is stronger and tighter than before which yields the tissue tightening effect. Earlier radiofrequency machines were unipolar- i.e. delivered current only superficially. They were painful and required sedation. The complications were due to non-specific delivery of radio waves to tissue. Complications include fat loss in the face and even indentation of areas of the face. Studies showed that these machines actually gave an older appearance to the face. As such, monopolar radiofrequency machines are not indicated for facial treatments and it is unlikely that such an old machine will be found in current aesthetic practices. Next came the Bipolar RF machines. These did cause diminution of line and wrinkles with some skin tightening. Bipolar RF are still used in the latest machines for

this purpose. It was found that with further technology the best results were achieved with a Tri-polar RF(TRIO XT) machine. This has two frequencies which targets two depths of tissue. As such, this treatment showed improvement of fine lines, wrinkles (as with Bipolar) but also shows excellent results with skin tightening and cellulite reduction. Cellulite results from fat deposits migrating from subcutaneous layer to the sub dermal elastic tissue matrix; and thus causing dimpling of the skin. It is thus important for the RF machine to be able to deliver energy to different depths found only in a Tri-polar device (TRIO XT). The treatments can also be used for ANY skin colour as melanin is not affected by a Tri Polar RF (TRIO XT). Thus, with time, the devices have become far safer, less painful, more specific and produce better results. Patients undergoing Tri-Polar RF with a machine such as the TRIO XT can expect the following benefits: • Facial and body skin tightening • Collagen reformation, facial rejuvenation and smoothing of skin • Body shaping and slimming • Cellulite reduction

and skin laxity, without a great deal of muscular attachment respond best to treatment. Patients should be informed that though immediate tightening will be seen, these effects will be short lived; however, results will continue to be seen through about 6 months(as the collagen is reformed). New devices have different hand pieces for delivering RF to different areas of the body. With these new handpieces, one can successfully treat eyes, nose, hands and mouth area. Treatment can remove and reduce wrinkles and bags under eyes. Thermally stimulates oedema in deep folds, causes collagen denaturation, neocollagenesis and tightens large pores; induces lymphatic drainage, elimination of toxins and smoothes skin tone and texture. A cooling device on a bigger handpiece applied to face, neck, decollete and hands. This diminishes fine lines, removes and reduces wrinkles; shapes, tightens and lifts facial profile;

enhances flexibility of skin, tightens large pores and helps smooth skin. A large area TRI-Polar handpiece is applied to the body. This Shapes body figure, tightens, reduces cellulite, smoothes texture, induces fat reduction, helps eliminate toxins and enhances epidermal tissue. The focused alternating depth heats the target area faster to reduce individual treatment times. Refine Anti-Aging and Skin Laser Clinic, is proud to announce the arrival of their new Tripolar Radiofrequency Machine the TRIO XT. Our qualified Skin Therapists have decades of experience in skincare, between them; and have certified qualifications specifically in radio frequency. This professional service is backed by the expertise of a qualified Aesthetic Medical Practitioner who is permanently based at Refine in Hermanus. If you think you may benefit from this treatment or would like more information; please feel free to contact us for your complimentary consultation today.

Patient selection is also very important when considering RF. The patients with excess skin

f you’re going to get started in the kitchen, this is the cake you should begin with. Not just because it’s simple - although it is - but because for me, it is the essence of basic baking. I also love it because the ingredients are pure, and you probably have them tucked away in your pantry already. The combination of these ingredients though is nothing short of alchemy - melting, smooth lightness and topping it off with berries – well, we all know perfectly well that berries are considered low GI!

than labour in the kitchen. It can be made, all in one, in your Kitchenaid food processor.

I would describe this cake as a sort of “out of a box” cake, which doesn’t sound right I know. But what I mean by this is that the cake looks and tastes perfect. The fact that it is scarcely harder than making one out of cake-mix (only worlds better) is an added joy. The recipe itself is ideal for busy new brides who have better things to do

Simply visit Goozi, register your wedding and stand the chance to win a Le Creuset Whistling kettle in your colour choice.

Instructions 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C. 2 In a small saucepan, heat the milk and butter just until butter is melted. Allow to cool slightly. 3 In a large bowl, beat the eggs, the sugar and vanilla extract until light and fluffy. 4 Sift together the flour and baking powder and gently fold into the egg mixture along with the milk and butter mixture . 5 Fill a 24cm and 20cm Le Creuset Non Stick Metal Bake ware Spring Form tin and bake for 3035 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the centre comes out clean. 6 Cool on a wire rack before icing. To make the icing, beat the butter in a large mixing bowl. Gradually add the icing sugar, alternating with the hot milk when it becomes too thick. Beat in an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Spread the icing evenly on the cooled cake and top with the berries. Cut the cake and serve!

Waar sy eiehandig bygedra het tot die titel “Paris, the capital of taste” Haar amptelike woning was bekend as “Marquisate of Pompadour”. Met ander woorde, “a girl to be reckoned with”.

Alhoewel Madame Pompadour bekend gestaan het as “The Little Queen”.

GELUKKIGE VALENTYN

I

t is raining in Hermanus. But sunshine starts showing dimly ... and I dare to take a walk. I am, once again, the agent searching.

I am hunting for a home for two families ... no, one family. Never mind ... it took me some time to understand as well. Actually we need two homes, but can only afford one, they said. Oh, I replied ... So, we decided to buy one home, but we do not want to see each other. Right, I agreed. Therefore we need two entrances, if possible, that we do not disturb each other when leaving or entering ... you understand what we mean? Sure, I nodded. But we never cook ... we hate cooking! But my daughter cooks. The kitchen must be perfect! If I sneak in to get something she mustn’t even notice me ... understand my problem? Clear ... I’m not smiling any more ... I’m thinking in third gear. You got it for us? Absolutely ... give me a few days. I am now entering the time slot of buyers. All buyer’s problems become our agents’ problems ... but then multitudinous. I’ve been walking now for an half an hour, or more, up with a very quiet street in Vermont. This area has a very peaceful country feel to it. I notice a few open stands; this could be a planned nature reserve, I thought. Suddenly I notice this imposing double storey on my left. I stood still. I have to see this. The gate is open. I stroll to the front door, knocked, admiring the beautiful mountain from the front door. And here I am invited inside by the friendly owner. What a pleasant entrance hall this home has ...

On the right hand side a comfortable lounge is set, leading to a convenient kitchenette, cosy study and guest toilet ... all positioned together very cleverly. As I turn around to view the rooms at the other end of this level, my eyes are once again gazing at the lovely view of the mountain from the front door. How I would enjoy leaving my home every day viewing this spectacular scenery! Before I ascend the staircase, I notice the two double bedrooms and bathroom, warm, sunny treatment, or, my friend the buyer could just perfectly move in here and stay forever without being abused by the rest of the family! Perfect! I thought ... I like this house, and immediately decide to investigate further. As I walk upstairs, this

mountain view on the one side of the house, and now the sea view on the other side, that goes on, and on ... And the beautiful living area, trimmed with designer cornices and skirtings, ceramic tiled onto the patio where the braai area can be enjoyed, simply take my breath away. I know it ... I know it! This is her home! And she is going to cook everybody out of there and enjoy the whole villa by herself! Some girls ... ! It is so, so not fair ... agree? What about me? Slowly, thinking and trying to concentrate hard as I walk down the staircase to view the lovely

A workshop to dream of! Or ... store room ... for lots and lots of precious belongings ... .! Or, a .real estate agent, that one can dream of! You asked, how much? A reasonable R2,510,000! Now ... where’s my bucket list ...!

enter the open planned library, from where the mountain view is even more awesome than from the front door! The spectacular scenery from nature draws me outside onto the balcony ... and I simply keep gazing ... I then realize not to miss out on the rest of this beautiful house, which now becomes the dream home of my heart. I walk through the library, view and story ... but, then I look around the corner. The kitchen! What a kitchen this is ... ! Beautifully open planned, neatly in a light breakfast counter, equipped with all the best appliances to be enjoyed by the chef of the house. As I turn around, the cool blue ocean stretches calmly and serenely as far as my eye can see. This cannot be true; I have to talk myself into believing what I am seeing ... the

garden of which I had a glimpse from the patio upstairs, it goes through my mind how hard it must be to give up such a lovely home. And then the next surprize hits me as I walk around the corner of the garage ...

AGULHAS The Trans Agulhas inflatable boat challenge, described as the world’s “toughest and longest”, proved as tough as ever in 2013 with six of the 34 boats that started the challenge on December 28 in Plettenberg Bay, failing to make it to the finish in Strand on January 1, 2014. It was the 26th time the Agulhas Inflatable Boat Club (AIBC) hosted the challenge, which takes place over a distance of 702 kilometres. Each day the boats were expected to reach a number of beach check points before proceeding to the finish point. On day one, stage one (December 28), the challenge started at Hobie beach and ended at Santos beach in Mossel Bay. The beach checkpoints on this stage were situated at Swartvlei, Wilderness, Glentana, Great Brak River and Little Brak River. Stage one was the longest in the race, spanning 189km. On day two (December 29), the boats had to stop at Vleesbaai and Gouritz River Mouth before racing to the finish at Stilbaai main beach. The total distance of stage two was 86km. On day three (December 30), man and machine covered a distance of 161kms, stretching from Stilbaai to Struisbaai main beach, with beach checkpoints at Witsand and Arniston/Waenhuiskrans. Stage 4 took place on December 31. The boats headed out from Struisbaai and checked in at Die Damme, Pearly Beach and Uilenkraalsmond before finishing at a buoy checkpoint at Hermanus old harbour. The total distance covered on this stage was 135km. Stage 5, a night race between Gansbaai and Hermanus was cancelled due to strong winds. The final stage of the 2013/14 Trans Agulhas Challenge over 131kms started at Hermanus and ended in Strand where a capacity crowd waited for the boats to come in.

“It’s tough. You have to be mentally and p hysically fit. You cannot stop con centrating for a single second. O ne mistake and it could cost you the race,” said Wimpie Ackerm ann of Team Imperial Cargo.

The race was dominated by the veteran teams such as Team Imperial Cargo (Wimpie Ackermann and Whitey Louw), Team Nulandis (Stefan Lindeque and Tony Ingram) and Team First Road Emergency (Dave Barnett, Tjaart Oosthuizen). Some of them have been competing in the sport for more than 20 years and most of them describe the Trans Agulhas as the “ultimate challenge for man and machine”.

2

Highlights of the 2013 Trans Agulhas challenge include: - The dramatic rescue of a bather by the pilot of Team Rusgenot, Dreyer van Niekerk. The team experienced engine problems and had to row to shore in Wildernis. Seconds after reaching the shore, Van Niekerk had to swim back in to rescue the girl, who was swept into sea by a strong current; - The participation of eleven novice teams; - Near-perfect weather conditions on most days and a wind still finish in Strand; - Renewed interest in the event. The 2013 challenge was supported by capacity crowds along the route. The race was followed internationally via social media; - Daily coverage on TV news and a 52 minute highlight package on Supersport (still to follow; - A competition where members of the public could win two laps on board of one of the boats participating in the Trans Agulhas. - The brilliant support given to the Trans Agulhas by the police’s task force and the army’s special forces; and - The spectacular daily surf races. 1

Pictures by Sebastian Scheepers 1. The surf race at Hermanus was a spectacular sight with the boats having to face a strong winds and heavy swells. Pictured here are Team Albertinia Meubelvervoer (JG Horne and Franco Hoffmann) and Team R23

Bricks & Full Throttle (Petrus and Rudolf Botha), that participated in the stock class. 2. Team Pride Trusses (Rudi and Christie Kriel) had a never-say-die attitude and eventually ended fourth in the stock class. 3. Team Lethaba Green (Pierre and Philip Naude), participated in the novice stock class. Here co-pilot Philip Naude gets ready to sprint to the finish. 4. The checkered flag awaits participants on one of the stages of the 2013 Trans Agulhas. 5. Two of the teams in the novice stock class, Team Lethaba Green (Pierre and Philip Naude) and Team Heins Motolek (Jamie Streicher and Jean-Meine Fernhout) nearly collided in the surf race in Hermanus. 6. Almost home…Team Rusgenot Transport (Rocco Erasmus and Arnold Myburg) ended third in the modified class.

ne of the oldest medicinal herbs, Fenugreek was used by all the ancient cultures. A favorite with both the Egyptians and the Arabs, who not only used the seeds for medicinal purposes but roasted them as a nutritious coffee too and also, ate the leaves as a vegetable. An Egyptian papyrus dating from 1500BC records medicinal uses of Fenugreek for inducing childbirth, treating burns and as a soothing wound dressing and digestive. Dioscorides in the 1st century recommended Fenugreek as a treatment for all gynaecological ailments, and Hippocrates, in the 5th century, prescribed Fenugreek for inflammations and infections and for treating dyspepsia and ulcers. The whole plant contains vitamins A, B and C, and a host of minerals. Ongoing medical research suggests that Fenugreek may inhibit cervical cancer (it has long been used in China for this); it may be one of the most remarkable of all herbs for reducing blood sugar in diabetics, and it is one of the most well-established plant medicines used to ease colic and abdominal cramps. ► CULTIVATION The pungent, oddly shaped seeds are exceptionally easy to grow and can be sprouted as a tasty salad ingredient.
