Chairman’s Message Dear friends, As Marina Bay Golf Course turns five this year, we take this opportunity to reflect on its humble beginnings from a swamp-filled reclaimed land to an awardwinning 18-hole golf course patronised by more than 300,000 golfers from all walks of life. It began as an idea by then Labour Chief Mr Lim Boon Heng to build a golf course that would be within the means of the general public. It was envisioned that the golf course would be as enjoyable and challenging as those offered by the top country clubs, and it would be ideally sculpted for both newbies and golf professionals. As expected, due to the scale of the project, we had to overcome many challenges during the developmental stage, and we did. Construction of all 18 holes was completed and opened to the public on 1 November 2006. In the same year, we took the 7th place for Best New Course in Asia by Asian Golf Monthly. Over the last five years, we experienced a recession, an economic recovery and other uncertain times, and yet, we continued to deliver the best experience to golfers through improved services, facilities, and excellent course conditions. Like all great success stories, Marina Bay Golf Course overcame tough odds to realise its ambitious goals. It rose from an undistinguished plot of reclaimed land to become an accessible, full-fledged golf course for the general populace of Singapore. During its development, the golf course was touched by the brilliant mind of a designer and the skilled hands of seasoned craftsmen. It took just less than three years of meticulous planning and construction to complete, but when Marina Bay Golf Course officially opened its doors for play in November 2006, the reception from patrons was nothing short of promising.

The birth of a vision
Some years ago, while going to Narita Airport from Tokyo city centre, I saw something different. The banks of the relatively dry riverbed had been reclaimed. There were tennis courts, and even a golf course. I thought the Japanese were very clever to make use of scarce land for recreation. On return, I asked the Minister for National Development when the reclaimed land at Marina would be needed for development. Normally, reclaimed land needed some time to settle down before development. I said if we had more than 20 years before development, then we should make use of it in the meantime, like a public golf course for example. The idea was taken up, and tenders were called. That was how Marina Bay Golf Course came into being! NTUC was the successful bidder, and now we have probably the best located and best maintained public golf course in the world! Planting the seeds of a golfing sanctuary
In 2004, then Chairman of NTUC Club Mr Lim Boon Heng, instructed that we form a team of good people to take charge of the project. The instructions were clear - to build a good public golf course, and to keep to the budget! We set up NCI Golf. Under the guidance of Mr Lim Boon Heng and the leadership of our Chairman Mr Ng Ser Miang, the team had the courage to dream, to invest and to find new ways of doing things, including choosing the type of grass and course maintenance. The team worked hard to make and keep the golf course what it is today. As we celebrate our 5th Anniversary, I wish to congratulate each and every one who contributed to the success of Marina Bay Golf Course. Neo Gim Kian, Director

The signs of progress
The concept of having a public golf course in Singapore was formulated at a time when a sizeable number of golfers had to golf overseas simply because they could not afford a golf club membership in Singapore. With a specific social purpose and commercial viability in mind, NTUC took the bold step of tendering for the land released by the Singapore Sports Council. The plan was to have a links course which remains, to this day, Singapore’s one and only. And we did not do things halfheartedly. We chose the best links course designer available in the market. The rationale of ‘doing good’ and ‘doing well’ was the main theme of the development. I am pleased that the course is well patronised with glowing accolades being heaped on it all the time. Management under General Manager Choo Wee Khiang should be congratulated for this fine achievement. Many players have come back again and again, I’m sure drawn by the deep bunkers which continue to challenge even the most experienced golfers. I hope that we will continue to attract not just non-club but club players and tourists to our courses. Lim Jit Poh, Director

When NTUC decided to make a bid to develop the Marina Bay Golf Course, it was guided by the simple principle to make golf accessible to the ordinary Singaporean, many of whom cannot afford or do not feel the need to own country clubs. The Directors of the company also knew that the site in Tanjong Rhu presented a unique opportunity to create a truly outstanding golf course and golfing experience, worthy of its location next to the iconic Marina Bay downtown. We had to keep things simple, without compromising the quality of the golf course. The outcome has been truly amazing. A lot of hard work has gone in to create a golf course that many Singaporeans enjoy. I wish to congratulate the MBGC team for an outstanding effort! Chan Tee Seng, Director

Shaping up for greatness
During the planning phase, the land allotted was inadequate. I was very glad that the Development Committee took up my suggestion to obtain extra land and this request was subsequently acceded to by the land authority. With more land space, the golf course architect could design a more enjoyable round of 18 holes with fewer safety concerns. It never ceases to amaze me that the building of a successful golf course is so dependent on applying maintenance programmes of the highest standards. I want to congratulate the General Manager, Mr Choo Wee Khiang, for setting a high standard of maintenance at Marina Bay Golf Course. I am very confident that with great care and excellent maintenance programmes, our golf course will remain beautiful and enjoyable to play on for a long time. Opening of 9 holes 1 July 2006 marked the unveiling of the back nine of Marina Bay Golf Course. The response from the public was highly encouraging, with golfers eager to test out the challenges of a true links course the first of its kind in Singapore.
It is a rarity to have a golf course in the middle of a city. It is a greater rarity that the golf course is so beautiful to the eyes as one drives up Benjamin Sheares Bridge, or takes in an aerial view of the luscious fairways from the myriad of vantage points in the city. But most importantly, to the golfer, Marina Bay Golf Course has a challenging layout, supported by outstanding maintenance and upkeep, that would truly test the skills of a golfer at any level. Congratulations to the MBGC management team on your 5th Anniversary. You have come this far through hard work, paying attention to details and a strong passion for golf. Opening of Driving Range The four-tier driving range, which can house close to 150 range-goers at any one time, was opened on 1 June 2006. With an outfield of 270m, the range is one of the biggest and longest in this region. Since its opening, quality range balls and mats have been provided for the added enjoyment of golfers.

Throughout our short five-year history, Marina Bay Golf Course has won over the hearts of golfers around the world. Thanks to its immaculate rendition of Scotland’s traditional linksstyle course with 91 pot bunkers and few water hazards, MBGC gives golfers of all skill levels a welcome challenge. It is no wonder that it is widely regarded as one of Asia’s premier golfing destinations. More importantly, MBGC’s energy-saving efforts and commitment to maintaining the biodiversity of Marina Bay’s delicate ecosystem have been officially recognised by the International Golf and Life Foundation (IGOLF).

7th Best New Course in Asia (2006 Asian Golf Monthly Awards) With all the hard work put into the planning and construction of the golf course, it was heartening for us to be recognised as the 7th Best New Course in Asia by readers of the Asian Golf Monthly in 2006.
One of the many challenges we faced in the initial stage as the golf course development was having to remove ten thousand truckloads of marine clay. Thanks to the efforts of the project management team and those involved, we have laid a strong foundation for the golf course. Till today, even with the high traffic, the course remains in excellent condition. Much thought also went into the planning and design of the buildings. Golfers can now enjoy a panoramic view of the golf course and city skyline from the Canopy as the building was constructed on the highest point on elevated ground. Unique to the Canopy is its shape which was designed to look like a driver’s head and the driving range like a shaft. Edwin Lee Director

Top Three Best Value for Money Golf Experience in Asia Pacific (2011 Asian Golf Monthly Awards) Marina Bay Golf Course was ranked in the Top Three of the 2011 Asian Golf Monthly Awards category for Best Value for Money Golf Experience in Asia Pacific.
A class of its own During the construction phase, we were faced with an insufficient supply of soil material in Singapore. The quality that we had on site from the lake was not suitable for use and supply was stranded for nearly 6 months. Our workers had to put in extra hours every day for the remaining 9 months in order to complete the construction work. It was truly a memorable day when everything was finally completed and I stood and looked out at the spectacular golf course that had transformed from what was once a piece of raw land. IGOLF Laureate Course In recognition of our efforts and commitment to promote environmental and social responsibility, Marina Bay Golf Course was accepted as an International Golf and Life Foundation (IGOLF) Laureate Course in 2011. IGOLF is an independent, non-profit, international organisation which encourages a healthy, sustainable golfing experience. Sustainability Marina Bay Golf Course (MBGC) takes pride in adopting an environmentally sustainable approach in the design of its water source. It was also conceptualised to complement the natural biodiversity of its surroundings while giving the local community a chance to enjoy golf at affordable rates. Marina Bay Golf Course also accommodates ten ponds to efficiently collect rain and distribute it throughout the pond system through interlinking “balancing pipes� (major underground piping). The balancing pipes allow MBGC to sustain a water source even through prolonged periods of drought by discharging excess water collected, into the Marina Bay Reservoir. With so many ponds and a cornucopia of plant species, the golf course is already a cosy habitat for fish, ducks and other wildlife.

Golf Course Designer He later became one of the founding partners in Gary Player Design, based in Johannesburg and served all markets from this base, with the exception of the Americas.
Energy conservation To conserve energy, wattage levels are varied for golf course lights on the tees, fairways and greens. As a result of this automated system, energy savings of approximately 20% are consistently achieved. Individual lights are also grouped by holes so that they can be turned off for holes that are not in use. Lights are carefully timed to the last flight during night golfing such that when the last flight finishes its hole, the lights go off. During periods of low usage, only one nine is opened for play instead of the two nines.
Phil Jacobs, Golf Course Designer
Phil Jacobs started his career in golf course construction some 26 years ago. He has a background in Land Surveying which stood him in good stead when it came to setting out levels and grades for golf courses. After being involved in the construction of two golf courses, Phil then ventured into golf course maintenance and maintained a championship standard golf course for a period of 18 months.
From 1987 – 2003 he was the senior designer for Gary Player on more than 40 golf courses in many different countries, including Japan, China, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, South Africa, France, Belgium, Poland and Egypt. Some of the award winning golf courses included Ria Bintan in Indonesia and Tanah Merah Garden Course in Singapore. During the last four years, projects have been taken on in Australia, China, Singapore, Egypt, Swaziland and South Africa. Towards the end of 2003 he started working under the Phil Jacobs Design banner.
For Marina Bay Golf Course, the challenge was to design a full 18-hole golf course that would give the player an emotional roller coaster ride, with highs and lows. It was decided that the design of the golf course would be a tribute to the history of golf, with its few water hazards and, in particular, its 91 pot bunkers. One of the main challenges for DP Architects was to establish the design approach of Marina Bay Golf Course. Being a public golf course, the design had to possess an essence of austerity and be executed with absolute rigour. It had to be simple, clear and direct without any excesses. canopy tee A tee box for Hole 1 and Hole 10 at the Canopy was designed specially to test the golfing skills of avid golfers. They can look forward to teeing off from the unique location from 2 December 2011 onwards.
The monthly transformation from jungle to plains and finally transforming into a beautifully turfed golf course with excellent scenery was the most memorable moment for me. The golfer’s first priority on his tee shot is to play to the left and to stay away from the fairway bunkers. A burn in front of the green tests the approach shot to the green.
This hole generally plays to a large and subtly sloping green. The bunker right of the green comes into play when the pin is positioned along the right edge of the green.
Tip: Either lay-up with your second shot or take one extra club to make sure that you clear the burn.
Tip: As this is still early in the round, disregard the pin position and play for the centre of the green.
Hole 7 Par 4 – 396m
Hole 8 Par 4 -450m This hole continues in the same direction as the previous hole where the golf is most often wind assisted. Be careful of the cluster of fairway bunkers to the right of the landing area.
Hole 13 Par 3 – 119m
Tip: When the pin is tucked anywhere near the edge of the green, ignore it and play for the centre of the green.
Hole 10 Par 4 – 416m

The burn to the left of the green is really in play and only a pin point approach shot will leave the ball on the green in two. Tip: For the midhandling golfer, this is another hole where laying up 90m to 100m short of the green on the second shot is well worth considering rather than trying to reach the green with a really long club.
Tip: Take on extra club from the tee.
Hole 15 Par 3 – 195m
Tip: Consider playing it as a short par-5.
Tip: Position the second shot to avoid the fairway bunkers and pond. Leave a longer approach into the green rather than find yourself in the hazards.
This hole generally experiences a crosswind. The green slopes are steeped quite heavily towards the golfer in the front left. The green is also slightly raised and therefore always play slightly longer than the scorecards suggest.
Tip: When you can’t reach the green comfortably with your second shot, try to lay-up 90m to 100m to the centre of the green to give you a full shot in. There is a fair amount of green behind the left green bunker.
Even though it is often wind-assisted, this is still a very long hole and making a par on it is a real challenge. There are many fairway bunkers that come into play on the tee shot. Be sure to stay out of them.
The cluster of bunkers to the right of fairway comes into play for both the shorter and longer hitter. When into the wind, this is a 3-shot hole where the positioning of the second shot becomes important.
Tip: Consider playing a bump and run shot with a 5-wood or even a putter if not too far from the edge of the green.
Hole 9 Par 3 -166m
Hole 14 Par 4 – 448m On this very short hole, the golfer is challenged by an island green. Direction of play is towards downtown Singapore which provides for a dramatic backdrop. Generally, wind direction will be across the line of play.
Fairway bunkers to the left and a bunker to the right define the landing area. The green is relatively small. The protection of the green complex is the soft slope away from the left and right edge of the green into collection areas.
A boogie for most golfers will not be a bad score. This hole plays long and only two exceptional shots will reach the green.
Tip: If you feel that the fairway bunkers are within your range with a driver, consider hitting a 3-wood from the tee.
Hole 4 Par 5 – 497m
Hole 16 Par 5 – 527m Even though the wind may be from the left and helping on this hole, the target area is relatively small and a par on this hole is very rewarding. Tip: Try to play towards the front of the green from where a par will be possible. Getting up and down from either the left or right of the green is really challenging.
A large “cross” bunker challenges the long hitter on the second shot. If he clears this bunker, he has a chance of reaching the green or finishing in a position from where a birdie will be possible. Tip: As you have ample space on the tee shot, now is the time to experiment with your grip, ball position, or any other swing thought, if you need to.

Hole 6 Par 5 – 546m While the fairway is generously wide, there is a small bunker in the centre. The bunker short left of the green is well short of the green and may affect your depth perception on your second shot.
First and second landing areas are quite wide. The green is generous in size and subtly undulating. Be careful of the back right position as the green slopes away from the golfer here.
Tip: After a good tee shot, consider playing towards the left side of the green and allow the wind to move the ball to the right. This will take the front right bunker out of play.
Hole 11 Par 4 – 368m
Probably the Best Public Golf Course in Asia
Tip: Try to focus on the centre of the fairway. Think about where you want to hit the ball rather than where you do not want to hit it.
Hole 12 Par 4 – 313m The green is relatively long and does not feature any bunkers around it. The back portion of the green slopes away from the golfer.
Play continues going south. On down wind conditions, the really long hitter can consider trying to drive the green. However, under normal conditions, only a short iron onto the green will be required.
Tip: Be aggressive on your second shot as there is not much trouble around the green.
Hole 17 Par 4 – 304m
Tip: Consider hitting a 5-wood off the tee, followed by an 8- or 9-iron.
Tip: Play a 5-wood from the tee and a short iron into the green.
Being the only links-styled golf course in Singapore, the par 72 course is a homage to the traditional links of Scotland and the beginnings of golf, especially with its few water hazards and 91 pot bunkers. These bunkers not only serve as one of our dramatic features, but they are also geared to provide hours of challenges and excitement to players. Marina Bay Golf Course is also proud to be one of the few golf courses in Singapore to offer night golfing for busy executives from Wednesday to Friday.
Hole 18 Par 5 – 527m With the wind behind, the green is reachable for the long hitter. While the green has no bunkers around, the slopes around the green edges are steep. The green also has bold contours protecting it.
Marina Bay Golf Course is Singapore’s first and only 18-hole public golf course and stands as one of Asia’s finest. Strategically located in the heart of the vibrant city, the course offers accessible golfing for the general public and a picturesque view of the majestic skyline, in the day and at night.
Generally windassisted, this green is reachable in two for the very long hitter. The final tee shot is to a very wide fairway while the lay-up area of the fairway is also generous. A burn snakes in front of the green. Tip: Give the lay-up shot careful attention.

It was a challenge to position the golf course lightings away from the line of play yet provide adequate vertical illumination for the golf ball trajectory and horizontal illumination on the tee-box, fairway and golf green. Positive feedback from golfers playing night golf was an indication that we managed to achieve the best possible voltage quality and optimal lighting. Introduction of GPS To enhance the golfing experience, we installed the Inforemer Global Positioning System (GPS) on all our buggies in August 2010. This cutting-edge GPS technology offers golfers an unprecedented insight into the par 72 course, including a bird’s-eye view of each hole, which will help both new and experienced golfers to steer clear of the pot bunkers. Having better knowledge of the holes also encourages golfers to strategise their game and improve their scores.

F1 night golf deal In conjunction with Singapore’s F1 Grand Prix night race, we launched a special 2-night golf promo. It was graced by none other than F1 driver Heikki Kovalainen, who swapped his racing suit for a smart pair of plaid shorts and polo t-shirt, for the night.
Christmas Promotion Avid golfer Tan Kee Chong bagged the Grand Prize which consisted of one year’s worth of free weekday green fees. Many attractive prizes were also given out during this Christmas Promotion in 2010.

Young golfers getting their game on! Sunset with Annika Sorenstam While in Singapore for the inaugural HSBC Women’s Champions Event, Annika Sorenstam visited Marina Bay Golf Course on 29 February 2008 and spent a “sunset session” with media and fans. It was a joint event organised by Callaway, my golf kaki and Pan-West, where Annika shared invaluable golf tips during the interview session. The invited guests went away with delightful memories when she delivered her trademark swing from the Canopy Cafe. It also happened to be one of her last official appearances before stepping away from competitive golf at the end of the 2008 season.

GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR THE YOUTH Marina Bay Golf Course has been hosting the National Inter-School Golf Championships (2007 - 2011) and the National Inter-Primary School Golf Championships (2010 - 2011), to support and promote junior golf development.

Looking up to another successful year CountUp 2008 CountUp 2008 was organised by Marina Bay Golf Course on 31 December 2007. The event played host to avid golfers who indulged in an exciting round of night golf before ushering in the New Year with their friends and families. It was filled with fun games and entertainment all around. The main highlight of the night was the spectacular eight-minute fireworks at the Marina Bay area.

Singapore Airlines International Cup Golf Friendly In conjunction with the Singapore Airlines International Cup, Marina Bay Golf Course hosted the Golf Friendly in 2008, 2010 and 2011. Each year, participating golfers could look forward to the attractive Hole-In-One prize of a pair of return air tickets to designated destinations sponsored by Singapore Airlines.

NTUC Charity Golf NTUC Care and Share organised the NTUC Charity Golf on 7 July 2008 to raise funds for NTUC Eldercare and NTUC Childcare. Teeing off for a fee of $5,000 per golf flight, the charity event raised more than $300,000 that year about 24% more than the year before. Together with Marina Bay Golf Course, approximately 150 golfers from the tripartite partners – government, businesses and the Labour Movement – lent their strong support towards this charitable cause.

U Care Challenge U Care Golf Challenge on 11 March 2009 marked the launch of the U Care Fund and was graced by Guest-of-Honour Mr Lim Swee Say, Secretary General, NTUC and Minister, Prime Minister’s Office. The event was a roaring success, attracting more than 200 enthusiastic participants with a determination to win as many golf challenges as possible. They also strived to score the highest pledge which went towards the U Care Fund.

MBGC Challenge Held on 26 December 2008, the MBGC Challenge set up a competition for 44 golfers who have achieved Hole-In-Ones since the golf course commenced operations. Themed ‘A Challenge to the Hole-in-Oners’, it was the first event of its kind at Marina Bay Golf Course where golfers had an opportunity to put the skills of the Hole-in-One achievers to the test.
Chairman’s Cup The Chairman’s Cup was held on 12 January 2010. The friendly golf competition was organised to forge closer ties and build camaraderie among the local golfing community. This proved to be yet another successful affair as the golf tournament received an overwhelming response from golfers including Union leaders and Union members. A donation of $50,000 was made to NTUC ElderCare as part of the event celebrations.

May Day Solidarity Walk & Concert Organised by Young NTUC, the event saw a 7,000-strong crowd demonstrate their support for the Labour Movement by participating in the May Day Solidarity Walk in May 2009. The Walk finished at Marina Bay Golf Course where an exciting one-and-a-half hour concert was held. For the first time, spectators had the chance to sit on the outfield of the driving range to watch the performances.

NCI Golf owns and manages Marina Bay Golf Course, and my golf kaki. We have also set up my golf kaki Academy to teach young ones the most conducive way to learn the art of golf. Most recently, in 2011, we were successful in our tender to manage and operate the Tanglin Public Golf Course and Tennis Courts. Together with Marina Bay Golf Course, the management of the two courses will help us achieve our objectives of making golf accessible to the public and promote the standard of golf locally.

Corporate Units my golf kaki my golf kaki was set up in 13 November 2002 to encourage golf as a sport and to provide affordable club membership and golfing opportunities to the masses. The club originated from the Singapore Labour Foundation, and continued with its initial objectives when it was transferred to NTUC Club Investments (NCI) in 2004. On 1 November 2006, NCI Golf Pte Ltd took over the management of the club with plans to offer even more exciting benefits and activities to entice more professionals and knowledge workers to join. my golf kaki has been active in building a golfing community with shared values and interests. The club organises regular golfing activities and competitions to bring its members together. As part of its onestop service to golf, the club also offers handicap maintenance, golfing insurance, merchant discounts as well as concessionary green fees at selected local and overseas golf courses. my golf kaki Academy my golf kaki Academy aims to be a leader in the golf teaching field by adopting a holistic approach to deliver affordable and high quality programmes to all in Singapore. Located in Orchid Country Club and Tanglic Public Golf Course, the Academy offers comprehensive training and development programmes endorsed under the Sports Education Programme (SEP) for 2012/2013. Lessons are conducted by qualified and experienced Class ‘A’ members of Singapore Professional Golfers Association. To make lessons engaging for the students, the Academy employs a variety of swing analysis aids such as V1 Golf and Swinguru. Swinguru is the only system that combines 3D visualization with a simple, intuitive feedback thus allowing students to see their mistakes and make corrections easily. Students have access to a conducive training room and a range of golfing facilities at Orchid Country Club. TEHC International TEHC International began as Toh Eng Hock Construction in the 1970s and was founded by Mr Toh Eng Hock as a landscape sub-contractor providing horticultural services. Over time, our clients grew to trust and value our philosophy of dependability, reliability and commitment to quality. As TEHC grew in stature, so too did our clients.
