In Loving Memory of District Two Director Jesse Pospisil SPJST District 2 Director Jesse Pospisil of Taylor, Texas, passed away Friday, May 22, 2026, at the age of 78.

Brother Pospisil, a member of Lodge 29, Taylor, dedicated almost 14 years of service as SPJST District 2 Director. He was a 58-year member of SPJST. He passed away peacefully at Beacon House Hospice Facility in Round Rock.

Visitation was held at Taylor Brethren Church in Taylor on Saturday May 30, at 11 a.m. Funeral services followed at 12 p.m. Burial was at Machu Cemetery in Granger. A funeral gathering and meal followed at SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor.

Jesse was born December 5, 1947, at Stromberg Hospital in Taylor to M.W. “Jessie” Pospisil and Helen (Horak) Pospisil. He grew up in Taylor and grad-

uated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in 1966. Jesse met the love of his life, Linda Tallas, when they were soph-

omores in high school. They were married June 10, 1967, and moved to Austin. They were blessed with two

daughters, Tammy and Cristy.

Jesse began his professional career with the Texas Department of Public Safety and a few years later started working for the Texas Highway Department, now known as TxDOT. He worked there for 32 years before retiring in 2000, building many lifelong friendships along the way. Jesse also served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 28 1/2 years, retiring in 1996 with the rank of Master Sergeant. He was proud of his military service and the friendships he made throughout those years.

Jesse had a servant’s heart and was active in several organizations, including the American Legion, Graham D. Luhn Post 39, KJT, Masonic Lodge No. 484, Texas Czech Genealogical Society, Continued on Page 5.

Lodge 47, Seaton In 1910, Paul Olejnik served as president of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. More than a century later, his family’s connection to SPJST remains strong with the arrival of a new generation.

Born on February 4, 2025, Lucy Hoelscher represents the sixth generation of her family to be connected to SPJST and Lodge 47, Seaton. She is the daughter of Thomas and Brooke Hoelscher.

hat if the greatest thing our ancestors ever did was refuse to think small?

Not just in money.

Not just in land.

But in courage.

They boarded ships not knowing if they would ever see home again. They crossed oceans carrying little more than faith, family traditions, a strong work ethic, and hope. They arrived in a country where many could not even speak the language. They worked fields, opened shops, built churches, started fraternal lodges, and endured hardships most of us cannot imagine.

Yet through it all, they believed tomorrow could be better.

That is the American story.

As we approach Independence Day, America’s 250th birthday, and SPJST’s 129th birthday, I think many of us feel something stirring again — a desire to reconnect with what built this country in the first place.

Not politics.

Not headlines.

People.

Ordinary people willing to sacrifice for something bigger than themselves.

When our Czech ancestors came to Texas, they did not come because life was easy. They came because they dreamed bigger for their children and grandchildren. They believed hard work, faith, family, and freedom mattered.

Because of their sacrifice, many of us are living lives they could have never imagined.

Somewhere back in your family line was a person brave enough to leave everything familiar behind so you could have opportunities they never would.

And they built something strong enough that generations later, we are still gathering in halls, churches, festivals, parades, and family events carrying pieces of their story forward.

That is why the American flag still matters.

Not because it represents perfection — but because it represents possibility.

As SPJST members, we understand this perhaps more than most. Our organization exists because immigrants believed in helping one another succeed in a new land. SPJST was built by people who believed families should be protected, communities should stay connected, and heritage should not be forgotten.

That spirit still matters today.

Maybe patriotism is not just fireworks once a year.

Maybe patriotism is building something that lasts.

As America approaches 250 years, I hope we do more than celebrate with red, white, and blue decorations. I hope we remember those who carried dreams across oceans and generations. And perhaps most importantly, I hope we ask ourselves: What are we building now that will matter 50 years from today?

Because one day, future generations will tell stories about us, too.

Let’s give them something worth remembering.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Scholarship helps student purse public health degree

This July, SPJST is celebrating its 129th birthday and our great country is celebrating its 250th. Numbers that look so small yet feel so large. During its storied history, our beloved SPJST has consistently promoted neighbors helping neighbors and charity both within and without. Yet our country, subject to debates from its earliest days, has perhaps never been as divisive quite how it is today. Echoes of McCarthyism are heard throughout politics and social media as people gatekeep what it means to be a true American. Echoes of the wrong parts of the civil rights movement are heard as peaceful protesters are assaulted by law enforcement. In our land of freedom, all too often we hear that our decisions that affect only ourselves and how we live are subject to government scrutiny. Our environment and national parks are facing existential threats. Generative AI is becoming ubiquitous in corporations without guardrails, often leading to a degradation in customer service and security. Increasingly, Americans feel disenfranchised and unheard, leading to a rise in extremist views and violence. It’s possible for things to get better. We can take our ideals and use them to rebuild our communities. Reach across the aisle to someone you disagree with and see if you can find three points of connection. Tell your representative to do the same. Don’t let selfish people in power scare you into isolation where the only one you can trust is them; help your neighbors, no matter whether you agree with them or not. Meet new neighbors who might be a little further away, either physically or in their stances. Join a new club; try a new gym; go to the senior center; visit the rec center. In honor of this extra-meaningful Independence Day, seek out new opinions and experiences and always remember to verify anything you see on the internet.

Marak picnic set for September 13 Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church’s annual homecoming picnic will be held Sunday, September 13 at Marak, Texas (seven miles northwest of Cameron on FM 2269). Mass is at 9:30 a.m., and games begin at 11:30 a.m. Home-fried chicken and sausage meal will be served at 11 a.m. with continuous serving while it lasts.

Meal tickets are $15 each. Entertainment will be by the Praha Brothers from noon to 3 p.m., and the auction begins at 2:30 p.m.

Six Generations of SPJST tradition continue at Lodge 47, Seaton Continued from Page 1. _____________________________ Brooke has served as Graphic Designer at the SPJST Home Office since 2014 and has been an SPJST member for 23 years. Like many young members before her, Brooke grew up in the SPJST Youth Program, participating in youth activities, competitions, camps, and lodge events alongside her brother, Brandon.

Brooke and Brandon are the children of Brian and Brenda (Sodek) Hoelscher. Brenda has remained actively involved in Lodge 47 and currently serves as lodge treasurer.

The SPJST tradition continued with Brenda and her sisters, Debbie (Sodek) Alexander and Janet (Sodek) Adams, who also grew up participating in

lodge activities. Debbie’s sons, Brady and Chase Alexander, followed in the family’s footsteps as active youth club members. Brady was crowned SPJST State King in 2015. Janet’s two children, Eli and Ella Adams are members of Lodge 47 as well.

The family’s commitment to SPJST reaches back even further through Lewis and Nora Sodek, who instilled the values of membership, participation, and service in their children and grandchildren. Those values were passed down from previous generations of the family, including Lewis’ mother Matilda and grandfather, both SPJST members.

come out and the kids enjoyed collecting drink bottles for the hall for a payment of 5 cents a piece. He and his wife Nora continue to faithfully support and volunteer at the annual picnic.

For more than a century, the family has remained connected to SPJST through membership, volunteer service, youth activities, leadership roles, and a commitment to the organization’s fraternal values.

From Paul Olejnik’s service as lodge president in 1910 to Lucy Hoelscher’s arrival in 2025, six generations have helped write an ongoing chapter in the history of Lodge 47, Seaton.

Their story serves as a reminder that SPJST is more than an organization— it is a family tradition that continues to unite generations through fellowship, community involvement, and heritage.

Taylor Lions Club, and SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor. He was a member of the Taylor Brethren Church.

Jesse was proud of his Czech heritage and was an active member of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor. He served as lodge vice president in the early 1970s and as property chairman for more than 20 years. He chaired the Taylor SPJST Barbecue Cook-Off for more than 20 years.

Jesse made the trophies and helped with many renovations at the hall.

In 2012, he was elected SPJST District 2 Director. He was continuously reelected and was serving his fourth term at the time of his passing. Jesse also served as treasurer of the Czech Heritage Museum for 16 years and most recently on the Museum Advisory Committee. He represented Lodge 29 as an SPJST Convention delegate from 2004 through 2024.

A skilled craftsman, Jesse loved woodworking projects and often donated his creations to fundraisers. His work included domino tables, children’s tables and chairs, framed art, mirrored crosses, wind spinners, and countless other handmade items. He also crafted the trophies for the Taylor International BBQ Cook-Off for many years.

Jesse was a loving husband, devoted father, and proud grandpa. He loved his grandkids deeply and attended every concert, award ceremony, and sporting

event he could. He enjoyed cooking barbecue, making homemade sausage, gumbo, and banana bread. For many years, he maintained a large vegetable garden and took great pride in the harvest it produced. He also enjoyed caring for his purple martin houses and looked forward each year to the birds’ return.

Jesse was the life of the party. He loved socializing, meeting new people, and never met a stranger. He enjoyed playing poker, dominoes, and horseshoes in his younger years and was always ready for a quick trip to the casino.

He loved fishing, spending time outdoors, and working in his shop.

His workshop was his favorite place to be. Decorated with memorabilia and family antiques, it featured a large television and several recliners and was always ready to welcome visitors. Jesse will be missed by so many people. He never hesitated to help others and always looked for ways to serve those around him. His legacy lives on through the family he loved, the community he served, and the countless lives he touched through his kindness, generosity, and servant’s heart.

Jesse was preceded in death by his parents, M.W. and Helen Pospisil; father-in-law and mother in-law, Jerry and Frances Tallas; sister in-law Judy Pasemann and husband Paul; and brother in-law Jerry W. Tallas.

He is survived by his wife, Linda (Tallas) Pospisil; daughters Tammy Cannon (Mike) of Georgetown and Cristy Girod (Mike) of Elgin; grandchildren: Kaitlyn Whatley, Brandon Girod, Hailey Girod and Collin Whatley; sister

Peggy Dewbre (Kevin) of Comanche; sister in-law Cindy Buzan (Greg) of Austin; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and his beloved cat, Lucky.

Serving as pallbearers were grandsons Brandon Girod and Collin Whatley, nephews Mark Pasemann, Brady Pasemann, Matt Dewbre, Michael Dew-

bre, and future grandson Darryl Peterson.

A Tribute in Honor of District Two Director Jesse Pospisil December 5, 1947 - May 22, 2026

“I Will Be There in Spirit” To Linda, Tammy, Cristy, and the entire Pospíšil family – and on behalf of the SPJST Executive Committee and everyone blessed to have known and served alongside Jesse – thank you for sharing him with us. We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences as we remember a gentleman whose life was defined by service, kindness, and quiet strength.

I had the honor to serve alongside Jesse since 2012, when he was first elected SPJST District Two Director.

Over the years, I came to know him as a dedicated director, as a friend and as one of the finest examples of what SPJST stands for.

My first up-close and personal experience with Jesse and Linda came at the American Fraternal Alliance annual meeting in New Orleans in September of 2012. Fraternal leaders from across the United States and Canada had gathered to discuss the future of fraternalism.

At that meeting, I witnessed how genuinely excited Jesse was about his new role and his commitment to helping chart the future of the SPJST. Jesse was the kind of person who made things better just by being there.

He embraced life with joy – “good humor and playfulness” – and a genuine delight in celebrating each moment with others.

Whenever there was a lodge fundraiser in District 2 or a statewide function, Jesse and Linda were there.

No matter what needed doing— whether it was cooking, building, repairing, selling tickets, hosting, or lifting the spirits of a fellow member in need — they would be there.

We saw this dedication time and again through Jesse’s involvement with the SPJST camp and statewide initiatives like the Corpus Christi getaways and so many others. A shining example of his legacy is the restoration of the SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad Hall building. Thanks in large measure to his efforts, that historic building is now enjoying a second life on the campus of the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange.

Jesse was a collaborator. He under-

stood that SPJST is strongest when we support one another and treat each other with respect. In Executive Committee meetings, Jesse had a calming presence.

He listened. He cared. And when he spoke, people listened because they knew his words were sincere and that they came from the heart.

Jesse dedicated his life to service in many ways. He served his country proudly in the United States Army Reserves for nearly three decades, retiring as a Master Sergeant. He served the people of Texas through his 32-year career with the Texas Highway Department. He served his church, his community organizations, his fellow veterans, and countless civic causes.

And of course, he served the SPJST and the Czech Heritage Museum.

From his early years as vice president of Lodge 29, Taylor, to serving as property chair for more than 20 years, to leading the Taylor SPJST Barbecue Cook-Off, to serving as a convention delegate and ultimately District 2 Director — Jesse gave his heart to the Society.

Jesse was a man of action.

If something needed to be built, Jesse built it.

If something needed to be repaired, Jesse fixed it.

If a fundraiser needed support, Jesse donated his time and money and his creative soul.

Many of us have seen the woodworking projects he created with such care — the domino tables, crosses, framed artwork, children’s furniture, trophies, and countless other items he made with his own hands. Those weren’t just projects.

They were gifts of love and generosity.

If you knew Jesse, you knew how proud he was of three things: his Czech roots, his local community, and the SPJST. He backed up that pride with actions — serving as the Czech Heritage Museum’s treasurer for 16 years and actively guiding the museum through 2026 as a member of the museum’s Advisory Committee.

Above all else, Jesse loved his family deeply. He shared so many of your stories with us!

Jesse and Linda shared nearly 59 years of marriage — a beautiful testimony to faithfulness and devotion. Together they built a life centered around faith, family, friendship, and service to others.

Jesse adored his daughters, Tammy and Cristy. He was immensely proud of his grandchildren and loved attending their concerts, ball games, ceremonies, and milestones. No matter how busy he was serving others, Jesse always made time for family.

People were naturally drawn to him because he made them feel welcome.

Whether you met him at a barbecue cook-off, a lodge event, a meeting, or sitting in his workshop visiting with friends, Jesse had a way of making you feel like you mattered.

Perhaps the greatest tribute we can offer to Jesse is to carry forward the example that he set for all of us: to be kinder, to help more freely, to serve more faithfully, and to treat one another with the same warmth and generosity that he showed in his everyday life.

Earlier I mentioned Jesse’s service to the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center.

The last email Jesse and I exchanged was about the Museum. On Wednesday,

March 25, I sent a note to the Advisory Committee asking whether everyone would be available to meet the following Monday for an online meeting.

Jesse – who was dealing with some serious health issues – responded with words that now feel especially poignant: “Wish I could, but I will be there in spirit.”

Those words – I will be there in spirit – seem to say more than Jesse could have known, for he truly does remain with us today in spirit and in memory.

I will close with a passage from our ancient SPJST ritual book, which includes a passage to be shared upon the passing of an esteemed member of our fraternal order: And I quote, “We have been deeply touched by Jesse’s passing, but the sadness in our hearts and especially in the hearts of his loved ones who survive him should be moderated in that we know that he has lived a good and useful life of service.

“Those of us who were close to Jesse and encountered him frequently, know that he spent a great deal of his time in an earnest effort to lessen the hardships, sufferings, and various problems of the members of his immediate family, as well as of his fellow members of the SPJST, and of all his fellow men.

“He exemplified the beauty of true fraternity and fulfilled the obligations and promises that he took at the time when he was admitted as a member. He lived and served according to the instructions and teachings he received in our Order on Benevolence, Humanity and Brotherhood.

May honor be given to his memory now and forever.”

A Tribute in Honor of District Two Director Jesse Pospisil December 5, 1947 - May 22, 2026

SPJST lost a wonderful example of the “fraternal spirit” when we lost Jesse.

He was always so kind and willing to lend a helping hand. When I first became District 7 Director, he took me under his wing and showed me the ropes. I especially enjoyed our board meetings and always getting to sit next to Jesse. It was also great to serve alongside Jesse on the Czech Heritage Museum Advisory Committee. His love of the museum was evident in the way he participated in the Night at the Museum functions and the meetings we had. I will truly miss him.

I have such fond memories of serving alongside Jesse as a fellow SPJST director from 2012 to 2020. During those years, I came to know him as a kind and dedicated leader who genuinely cared about the members and the future of SPJST.

It’s difficult to place in words what Jesse Pospisil meant to District 2, Lodge 80, Holland, and to me personally. He will be remembered for his smiling face and his willingness to help in any way that he could. He was a true, reliable friend for many years and

brought hope and enthusiasm to whomever he interacted with at meetings or social gatherings. His patriotism was very strong as he clearly demonstrated at various ceremonies.

I’ve already experienced “missing” he and Linda as I entered Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall for their annual picnic on Sunday, June 7. Usually, the two of them would be welcoming everyone at the door. Their absence was overwhelming.

Thank you to Jesse for all of the years he devoted himself to SPJST. He was a true example of living fraternalism.

A Trusted Voice of Reason It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Jesse Pospisil. His loss is deeply felt throughout SPJST, his beloved lodge in Taylor, and by the many people whose lives he touched through his leadership, service, and friendship.

Jesse was much more than a member of the SPJST Executive Committee—he was a mentor, a trusted voice of reason, and a man whose dedication to our organization never wavered. Whenever the Board faced a difficult issue or struggled with an important decision, Jesse had a unique ability to process the

matter thoughtfully, ask the right questions, and seek the clarification needed to help move us forward. His wisdom, common sense, and commitment to doing what was right for SPJST earned the respect of everyone around him.

What I admired most was his enthusiasm and unwavering loyalty. Jesse loved SPJST and devoted countless hours to serving its members. He was equally devoted to his home lodge in Taylor, where he invested tremendous time and energy into improving the facilities, overseeing hall renovations, and helping organize the renowned annual barbecue cook-off. He understood that strong lodges are built through hard work, volunteerism, and bringing people together.

Jesse was also a proud veteran whose love of country was evident in everything he did. He carried himself with honor, integrity, and a deep appreciation for the freedoms and opportunities he had served to protect.

Beyond his accomplishments, Jesse was simply a joy to be around. He possessed a wonderful personality, a quick wit, and a sense of humor that could brighten any room. Some of my favorite memories are the many conversations we shared, the laughter we enjoyed, and the times we worked side by side. I especially cherish the days we spent together at the Texas Czech Heritage and

Those moments reflected who Jesse truly was—a man who never hesitated to roll up his sleeves and contribute wherever he was needed.

I was also deeply impressed by his devotion to his family and to the people of the district he proudly represented.

He cared deeply about those he served and always worked to ensure their voices were heard.

Jesse leaves behind a legacy of service, leadership, friendship, and faithfulness. The impact he made on SPJST and on so many individuals will continue long after his passing. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served alongside him and to have called him a friend.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family, his friends, his lodge family in Taylor, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Lead With Your Heart When Jesse was elected district director, I remember having a conversation with him that I will never forget.

I told him, “Don’t become a director.”

Of course, I didn’t mean the title.

I meant don’t let a position change who you are. Don’t let a title become more important than people. Lead with your heart. Put others first. Always do the right thing, even when the right thing isn’t easy.

Jesse smiled and said, “You let me know if I ever do.”

The truth is, I never had to.

Jesse remained exactly who he had always been—a kind, caring, humble man who genuinely wanted what was best for others. He never forgot where he came from, and he never forgot who he was there to serve. Whether he was visiting with a member, helping a lodge, supporting a youth activity, or making a difficult decision, Jesse led with compassion and common sense.

He understood something that can sometimes be forgotten: leadership is not about authority; it’s about responsibility. It is not about being important; it is about making others feel important.

Jesse carried his title with humility and grace. He listened more than he spoke. He cared more than he criticized.

He encouraged more than he discour-

aged. And he never allowed a position to become more important than the people he served.

In a world that often celebrates power, Jesse quietly demonstrated the value of kindness.

His legacy will not be measured by motions made, meetings attended, or years served. It will be measured by the countless people whose lives were made better because he took the time to care.

I am thankful for our friendship, grateful for his example, and honored to have known him.

The greatest tribute we can give Jesse is to remember the lesson he lived every day: Lead with your heart. Put people first. And always do the right thing, even when it isn’t easy.

SPJST Home Office helped spread Easter cheer at the Rogers “Easter in May” event on May 16, 2026. Originally scheduled for April 4, the event was postponed due to flooding rains. SPJST delivered the Easter Bunny and provided several baskets filled with toys and treats for area children. Lodge 6, Cottonwood Dear Lodge 172 Membership: The membership of Lodge 6, Cottonwood thanks the J.C. and Vicki Dressler Memorial for awarding our lodge’s grant of $3,000 for some repairs to our building and entry fee/insurance for our food trailer at Westfest.

The repairs to the drive-through awning have been completed. The rusted framework was repaired, and other rusted areas were sanded down before painting.

The new painting job gives the awning a new, refreshing look.

The entry fee to Westfest has been submitted. We are all set to have our food trailer at Westfest to celebrate our 50th year at Westfest. The insurance for the trailer will be paid later in the year.

We invite everyone to come out to Westfest and visit our food trailer for our delicious sausage, buttered parsley potatoes, sauerkraut, and bread boat.

Lodge 15, Buckholts Our kitchen sink was separating from the wall and was too small for large pans and cookware. We often hold fundraiser dinners and serve as many as 200 meals.

Thanks to the J.C. and Vicki Dressler Memorial Grant, we have renovated and updated the kitchen. We will continue to be able to hold fundraiser dinners, hall rentals, and support the community by hosting the school prom for the senior class, donating to the Buckholts Volunteer Fire Department, and hosting the Buckholts Youth Center’s talent show.

Lodge 23, Moravia We would like to thank Lodge 172, Pasadena for the grant funds provided to Lodge 23, Moravia. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and will help us make much-needed improvements to our building.

At this time, we are waiting for bids to repair or replace the windows and for electrical work to update our building’s electrical system. Because we are located in a small community, it has been challenging to find contractors who are available to come out and provide estimates. We are hopeful that we will receive the necessary bids soon so that work can begin.

Updating the electrical system is a priority, as we currently have only two electrical outlets, and the ceiling lights and fan must be plugged in to operate. The improvements will ensure that the wiring is installed properly and safely. In addition, the upgraded electrical

On behalf of the officers of Lodge 48, Beyersville, we sincerely appreciated the opportunity to submit a hall improvements request to the 2026 J.C. and Vicki Dressler Memorial Grant sponsored by SPJST Lodge 172, Pasadena. We are honored to be recipients of the grant and utilized the funds to complete our submitted improvements. Our fish fry has been growing in popularity in the community so we increased the tickets sold which required a new fryer. Our hall rentals remain consistent especially during early spring through the fall each year, which means our amenities take on wear and tear.

Lodge 107, Floresville was honored to be selected as a recipient of the 2026 J.C. and Vicki Dressler Memorial Grant sponsored by SPJST Lodge 172, Pasadena.

The grant funds were used to help offset the cost of important repairs to the roof of our lodge hall. In addition to repairing problem areas, a spray seal coating was applied to help protect the roof and extend its service life. The project has now been successfully completed and will help safeguard our lodge hall from the elements for years to come.

Thanks to the Dressler grant, Lodge 48, Beyersville purchased the new fryer on the right to continue growing our March Fish fry for the community.

Funding for the roof repair project came from a combination of fundraising efforts and grant assistance. Lodge members worked hard to raise funds through various activities, including our New Year’s Eve celebration and fundraiser. The success of that event, coupled with the generous support provided through the J.C. and Vicki Dressler Memorial Grant, enabled Lodge 107 to complete this important improvement project while maintaining the lodge’s financial stability.

The purpose of this project is to replace the lodge’s brick sign, which was severely damaged during a recent windstorm. Restoring the sign is essential for maintaining clear visibility, supporting community events, and preserving an important landmark that helps residents stay connected to the lodge and its activities.

Lodge 177 was awarded the Lodge 172 J.C. and Vicki Dressler Memorial Fund Grant on February 25, and we are pleased to share that the outside sign replacement was completed on May 26.

District 5 Rally set for August 22 at Lodge 88, Houston Mark your calendars for the SPJST District 5 Rally Saturday, August 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston.

The event is free and open to all SPJST members, families, and neighbors.

SPJST District Rallies offer members a chance to reconnect, learn, serve, and celebrate what makes SPJST special.

The rallies make our traditional annual meetings fun for all ages. Join us as we conduct our annual business updates, strengthen our fellowship, and serve our Houston community.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood prepares for annual picnic and Westfest Lodge 6, Cottonwood President Don Urbanovsky called the June 7, 2026, meeting to order, and all officers were present. Sister Irene Peterson reported there were 15 adult members, three youth, and two guests in attendance.

Minutes from the May meeting were read by Secretary Jeanette Beseda. The treasurer’s report was provided by Sister Peggy Dobecka. Both reports were accepted by the membership.

Home Office news was provided by Sister Jeanette. Lodge 6 is continuing the Caring Challenge: Acts of Kindness, by gifting care baskets to local veterans.

The baskets/boxes were filled with personal hygiene products as well as snacks. Lodge members plan to deliver

gifts to the local VFW prior to their meeting on June 10. Thank you cards with American flags pictured on front were attached to the baskets to complete our care project, “Serving those who served.” Sister Jeanette also informed the members on future Caring Challenges and how we can start planning for those now.

Sister Barbara Hykel provided a report of personal correspondence, read by Sister Jeanette. Get well cards were sent to Vicki Anderson and Steve Soukup.

Condolences were sent to Stephanie Kucera and the family of Steven Kucera.

Sister Jeanette read a congratulations note from Vice President of Communications Melanie Zavodny. Sister Melanie was acknowledging the Dressler Grant money awarded to Lodge 6.

As part of the June SPJST Challenge, “Serving Those Who Served,” Lodge 6, Cottonwood members Peggy and Bobby Dobecka, Don Urbanovsky, Patti Rosales, and Jeanette Beseda delivered toiletries, personal care items, and snacks to the West VFW Post. Joining them in the photo are VFW officers and members. The donated items will also be shared with local veterans residing in area nursing homes.

Westfest plans were discussed. This year will be the 50th year and the Westfest Foundation is requesting information and pictures of the Lodge 6 food booth over the years of participation.

Lodge 6 booth is the only food vendor, still operating, that started with Westfest in 1976, and we are very proud of that distinction. Discussion was held regarding menu pricing, ordering of new banner for outside of booth, and payment of rental space.

Brother Bobby Dobecka reported on some needed hall improvements: purchase of equipment to increase cellular reception in the hall, replacing emergency exit signs for three exit doors, and new red light switches for reminders to turn off lights to outdoor signage and walk-in cooler. Motions for purchases and installation were approved by the membership. Sister Peggy reported Lodge 84, Dallas’ generous offer to donate a defibrillator for Lodge 6. This would be a lifesaving medical device in case of a cardiac emergency. Hall Manager Sister Peggy also provided information on lodge bookings for June and July. Summertime is popular for family reunions here at the Cottonwood hall.

Lodge 9, Snook supports youth and community programs The June 3, 2026, SPJST Lodge 9, Snook meeting was called to order by President Donnie Hejl at 7:15 p.m.

Marie Shelfer led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll of officers was called. Minutes from the May meeting were approved. Hall manager, treasurer, and communications reports were presented.

The youth club is busy preparing for the State Youth Showcase and discussing a summer outing. They will make kolaches in August for the Firemen’s BBQ. We continued discussions regarding work done at the hall and the historical marker.

Under new business, we passed motions to reimburse 4-H Exchange for the hall rental and to sponsor the youth division at the bake show for the Kolache Festival in Caldwell.

The meeting adjourned at 7:36 p.m.

Secretary Cathy Bruggman read the minutes of the last meeting. The financial report was left by Treasurer Linda Wilde. Shirley Hoelscher gave the member engagement report. Our project for May is Blooms of Kindness flower arrangements to Rosebud Rest Home.

Costumes and Cocktails is set for November 7. Debonairs dance is June 27. Vrazels’ Tribute Dance is July 26.

TABC individual expirations need to be updated. Spring cleaning is set for July 18 at 8 a.m. Summer camp is June 28 to July 2 in Comfort. State Youth Showcase is Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25 for talent and royalty.

Birthdays for May are Kim Campbell, Jennifer Hoelscher, and Joseph Hoelscher. Wedding Anniversary is Shirley and Jason Hoelscher - 20 years.

Ideas for more bookings was discussed. Spring cleaning will by July 18 at 8 a.m. TABC individual expressions are to be checked. An insurance update and TABC update on inspections were shared. A leak in the kitchen roof is to be checked.

Save the Dates The Vrazels’ Tribute is July 26. Seaton Church picnic is July 19. September 19 is the Rogers Eagles Foundation event. October 3 is the District 2 Rally at our lodge hall. October 16 and 17 is the shed haulers event. November 7 is Costume and Cocktails. December 31 is New Year’s Eve. Tickets for the November 7 Costumes & Cocktails event are $125 per couple; $75 for singles.

From Prague to Fayetteville: A Friendship Reunited After 30 Years

By Sharon Fritsch Lodge 1, Fayetteville Recently, I received a message from a former foreign exchange student from Prague, Czech Republic, whom I had the pleasure of getting to know 30 years ago. Valerie Snajdrova shared that she was traveling to Texas to pick up her daughter, Emma, who had just completed a year as a foreign exchange student in Montgomery, Texas.

It seemed like only yesterday when Valerie arrived in Fayetteville as a high school student. Seeing her again after three decades brought back many wonderful memories.

Valerie reminded us that when she first arrived in Texas, she did not know a word of English. With the help of a translation dictionary, determination, and the support of her Fayetteville friends and classmates, she quickly learned the language. To this day, she gives Fayetteville, Texas, credit for teaching her English.

Visiting with Emma was equally enjoyable. Unlike her mother, Emma arrived speaking excellent English and without a Czech accent. I jokingly told her that she was now a “Czech-Tex.” Emma had clearly embraced Texas life, mentioning Buc-ee’s several times and sharing how much she had fallen in love with the Lone Star State.

What a remarkable coincidence that both mother and daughter experienced life in Texas as foreign exchange students, separated by 30 years yet connected by similar journeys.

Valerie now lives in Prague and operates a travel business that provides guided tours highlighting Czech traditions, local culture, creative workshops, and authentic experiences throughout the Czech Republic. Her passion for sharing her homeland with visitors reflects the same enthusiasm and warmth that so many of us remember from her student days in Fayetteville.

One of my favorite memories of Valerie was introducing her to the sport of cross country. After completing her first meet, she asked for a “pivo.” I had to explain that in Texas, after a race, the beverage of choice was Gatorade!

One of Valerie’s favorite landmarks during her stay in Texas was the historic Fayette County Courthouse in Fayetteville. Valerie is pictured with her family during a recent visit to Texas.

Valerie always appreciated Texas culture and history. She especially loved the historic Fayette County Courthouse and enjoyed spending time with her classmates and host family. Seeing her again reminded me how meaningful foreign exchange programs can be and how friendships formed decades ago can endure across oceans and generations.

As SPJST members, we understand the importance of preserving and celebrating our Czech heritage. Stories like Valerie’s remind us that the ties between Texas and the Czech Republic remain strong and continue to connect families, cultures, and friendships for years to come.

Lodge 29, Taylor honors Jesse Pospisil Lodge 29, Taylor met for their regular bi-monthly meeting on June 10, 2026, with President Adolph Grieger presiding. He led the Pledge of Allegiance and had a moment of silence for our departed. All officers were present.

The April minutes were read and approved.

Tammy Cannon gave the treasurer’s report. Linda Pospisil gave the fraternal report. The District 2 Rally will be held at Lodge 24, Cyclone on October 3. The State Youth Showcase in Temple will be on July 24 and 25.

Adolph reported that the urinals upstairs were all repaired. The refrigerator upstairs stopped working.

Adolph discussed whether Lodge 29 wanted to donate $300 to the Taylor In-

ternational BBQ Cook-off for a firstplace trophy. He also asked if we could make the donation in memory of Jesse Pospisil. Lyn Rieger made a motion, and Mikey Girod seconded. The motion passed.

Adolph also asked if Lodge 29 would want to purchase a ticket for the Hutto Boosters fundraiser in September.

Tammy Cannon made a motion, and Barbara Nygrin seconded. The motion prevailed.

Tammy Cannon made a motion to stop bringing door prizes to our meetings as there is such a small group attending. Frankie Pustejovsky seconded,

and the motion passed.

Lodge 29 members decided to put a pause on our annual barbecue cook-off this year. We will take it into consideration next year.

Bonnie Wolf of Lodge 48, Beyersville visited our lodge for the meeting.

She informed us about the Lodge 48 annual fundraiser on August 22. Lyn Rieger made a motion for Lodge 29 to

Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Wilde celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 6, 2026, beginning with a Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cyclone at 1 p.m. Reverend Ranjan Cletus officiated the Mass, which was followed by a reception, dinner, and dance at SPJST Lodge 24, Flag Hall in Cyclone. Music was provided by The Jerry Haisler Trio, Ennis Czech Boys, and The Moravians of Ennis.

Linda Marie Vrazel and Daniel O. Wilde were married on June 5, 1976, at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Marak with Reverend Harold Hughes officiating.

Daniel retired from Coufal-Prater Equipment after 11 years as an equipment technician. He also spent many years farming and ranching.

Linda retired as office manager from

Farm Credit after 15 years and later worked as an independent insurance agent for 27 years.

The couple are members of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cyclone and SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone, where Linda has served as lodge treasurer for 20 years and Daniel served as lodge president for 18 years.

Daniel and Linda enjoy attending polka dances and traveling, especially on cruises.

They have made their home in the Cyclone community since their marriage 50 years ago.

SPJST extends its congratulations and best wishes to Daniel and Linda on this special milestone and thanks them for their many years of dedicated service to their church, community, and Lodge 24.

Dear Readers, Lodge 25, Ennis participated in celebrating “60 Years of National Polka Festival” and “40 Years of the National Polka Festival Dance Contest” with the help of our wonderful volunteers.

Whether you worked behind the scenes planning details, made kolaches and strudel, prepared barbecue, took out the trash, refreshed restrooms, tended bar, worked the front door, picked up trophies for the dance contest, judged the contest, sold Kroj books, sang Czech anthems, decorated, cleaned up, or helped in countless other ways, your efforts were definitely noticed. You know who you are!

You are all a wonderful reminder of why

we do this—to remember our Czech heritage and reflect on what our hard-working ancestors did when they came to America from the Czech lands seeking a better life so that we could enjoy the opportunities we have today.

Through our festival, we honor their memory by preserving their customs, beliefs, and values while passing those traditions on to the next generation.

Lodge 35, Elk approves hall lighting improvements Lodge 35, Elk Hall President Randy Pavelka called the monthly meeting to order at 7:08 p.m. on May 21, 2026, with 11 members and one guest in attendance. Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. Minutes read by Secretary Megan Mann were approved as read. Treasurer, floor, and bar chairs gave the monthly totals.

The air conditioning unit and ice machine have both been repaired and are in good working order. Special appreciation goes to Walter, Danny, and Bobby Kubitza for their hard work and dedication to these repairs.

New business consisted of discussing upgrades to the lighting in the hall. A motion was made by Bill Kubitza, seconded by James Mann, to replace all lights. The motion carried.

The meeting adjourned at 7:23 p.m.

We are looking forward to a few weeks off for our hardworking members to enjoy much deserved personal time.

Lodge 47, Seaton celebrates successful picnic Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 47, Seaton members gathered for the monthly meeting on Monday, June 8. President Danny Stepan called the meeting to order. Members on the sick list are Lewis Sodek. A moment of silence was observed for District 2 Director Jesse Pospisil, who passed away recently. Secretary/Reporter Shelly McNeill read the May lodge minutes and the unofficial May board meeting minutes.

Danny thanked everyone who helped with the annual picnic and stated it was a good turnout and a success. Vice President/FAC/Parliamentarian/Youth Leader Tammy Martinez stated youth club members from Seaton and Cyclone volunteered with to-go plates along with past youth club member and recent high school graduate Kal-El Martinez. She announced the State Youth Showcase will be July 24 and 25 at the Mayborn Civic and Convention Center in Temple.

The talent and royalty competition will be on the 25th. The Debonaires will be playing at Seaton Star Hall the evening of July 25. Youth camp will be June 28 to July 2.

Lodge 23, Moravia shows compassion through caring challenge For the second quarter Caring Challenge, Lodge 23, Moravia members put together flowers and blessing bookmarkers which were presented to Ms. Shawn for all the hard work she does planning activities for senior citizens at Regency in Schulenburg. The blessing bookmarks will be used for bingo prizes.

Treasurer Brenda Hoelscher read May financials and announced our three $2,000 sponsorships for 2026 events are B-Tek Water Service, Cedarwood Financial, and SPJST Home Office were recognized at the annual picnic. She stated we received several other multievent sponsorships for 2026 and expressed a big thank you for all of the support. She also reported picnic revenue from plate sales, live auction, bake sale, silent auction, bar sales, bingo, country pitch corn hole competition, and

50/50 raffle.

Brenda stated she submitted a grant application to Operation Heart of Texas and will be submitting a grant application to Texas Dance Hall Preservation both for HVAC upgrades to Lodge 47.

Shelly discussed hall bookings for May and June, announced that the hall phone is working again, and expressed the need for another maintenance/cleanup day to continue with necessary repairs and improvements. Danny read the bar report for May.

Lodge 38, Kovar mourns the loss of its president

Lodge 38, Kovar is heartbroken by the passing of its beloved president, Alfred “Fred” Hellinger, whose dedication to the Kovar community was unmatched. His loss leaves a void that is impossible to measure. Fred was woven into the very fabric of this community, and imagining Kovar without him feels unthinkable.

For many years, Fred led SPJST Lodge 38 with unwavering commitment. Under his leadership, the historic lodge hall was renovated and brought back to life as a gathering place for the community. He also cared for the SPJST Cemetery with the same devotion, personally funding the installation of a new fence and regularly mowing and maintaining the grounds.

Fred’s service extended deeply into Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kovar, where he worked tirelessly on behalf of the parish. He oversaw the church renovation project, handled maintenance whenever needed, and cared for the church cemetery, including the sale of burial lots. He never accepted payment for any of this work, serving solely out of love for his faith

and his community.

Perhaps one of Fred’s most remarkable accomplishments was his dedication to saving the historic Barton Creek Catholic Cemetery from abandonment.

He spent countless hours clearing brush, removing fallen trees, and replacing deteriorated fencing. Because of his efforts, the once-forgotten cemetery was restored to dignity and beauty.

Today, it stands as a peaceful and wellmaintained resting place—a testament to Fred’s vision, perseverance, and commitment.

Fred was a devoted Christian, a dedicated community leader, and a selfless servant to others. His legacy will live on in every place he touched, every project he restored, and every life he quietly improved through his acts of kindness and service.

Lodge 38, Kovar extends its deepest sympathy to Fred’s family and loved ones. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

May he rest in peace.

Tammy asked hall members and the board about an old, antique, wooden chest that was found in the hall recently to be donated to the Home Office for use of collecting old flags. A vote was made to donate it to the Home Office with agreement that it will be shown it was donated by Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall.

The upcoming barbecue cook-off on July 17 and 18 was discussed, and Brenda announced all of the improvements that were done at the maintenance/clean-up day.

June birthdays, anniversaries, and door prize winners were recognized.

Lodge 47 continues to gather and provide a place for members, family, and friends in the surrounding community to enjoy.

Lodge 66, Waco reaches youth camp goal and supports Caring Challenges The June meeting of Lodge 66, Waco was called to order by President Douglas Galler at 5:41 p.m. on June 8, 2026, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bellmead. In roll call of officers, all officers were present. Present were 11 adult members and two youth members.

John Engelke made a motion to accept the minutes for the May meeting as printed in the Vestnik. Jodie Sr. McAdams seconded the motion, and it passed.

In correspondence, each family should have received one invitation for the 119th Anniversary Luncheon. Please RSVP to John or Diana Engelke by June 19.

Lodge 38, Kovar supports local Youth Livestock Show

Youth Update The lodge’s youth members are actively working on their SPJST Gives projects, Blooms of Kindness and Serving Those Who Served, while also preparing entries for the upcoming State Youth Showcase competitions in July.

Lodge 30, Taiton members Ryan and Brandon Drapela completed the grueling 260-mile Texas Water Safari canoe race from San Marcos to San Antonio Bay in just under 76 hours. Paddling the San Marcos and Guadalupe rivers, the team placed 72nd out of 160 competing teams.

Dana McAdams then gave a youth club report. We only have four youth attending camp. One hundred tickets will pay for all four youth to go to camp. We had a total of 93 tickets sold by Lodge 66. Seven more tickets were sold at the meeting bringing our total to 100 and meeting our goal. The youth will meet at the LaQuinta in Woodway on Sunday, June 14 at 2 p.m. for the meeting and to prepare flowers for our Blooms of Kindness Caring Challenge. Please join us if you can.

Diana then gave the treasurer’s report.

In old business, we had a discussion about the few RSVPs we had received for the luncheon so far. We had a discussion about the door prizes for the luncheon and the 50/50 pot. We also mentioned that the youth club will have a fundraiser bake sale. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., and lunch will be served at noon.

In new business, we will meet in July on the 6th at 5:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s to make sure we have everything ready for the luncheon. There was a discussion about the flowers for the Blooms of Kindness Caring Challenge. Dana has applied for the HEB Community Investment Program to help pay for the flowers. She will find out this week if we will receive that and let everyone know. The adult lodge and the youth will then split the cost of the flowers, if needed. A motion was made by Dana, seconded by Michael, to pay half the

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi continues support for troops overseas Lodge 79, Corpus Christi met May 17, 2026, with a meal of chicken-fried steak and sides.

President Mark Rebecek called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance. Twelve members and guests were in attendance. All officers were present.

Sarah Urbanovsky was on the sick list. We wish her well.

Secretary Virginia Rebecek read the April minutes, and Treasurer Jerry Sijansky gave the financial report. Both

reports were approved.

Vice President/Fraternal Activities Coordinator Gerilyn Donnell stated the boxes we are sending to the troops overseas were to come home, but were reassigned. We are in need of items mostly of health products. At the June meeting, we will do more boxes - mostly snacks.

We are still collecting greeting cards.

On new business, our next meeting will be June 21, celebrating Father’s Day. The entree will be pork ribs, and members are asked to bring a side dish.

Youth Leader Marcia Rew had four members and guests in attendance. The youth made flower pots for Mother’s Day. Winners of $25 door prizes were won

by Virginia Rebecek and Gerilyn Donnell.

Lodge 81, Needville celebrates youth creativity and summer activities Lodge 81, Needville met Sunday, May 17 at 12 p.m. After a prayer of thanks by President Vincent Newman, everyone enjoyed a meal of sandwiches with all the fixings. I want to thank Bradley Stavinoha for picking up the bread, meats, and cheeses for the sandwiches. Members brought chips, dips, and desserts. A big thanks to everyone who brought all the delicious food.

The youth decorated the make-shift float, and they enjoyed riding it in the parade. Congratulations to our creative youth!

Under new bushiness, Jeanette Newman announced that she received the proof of registrations from all three scholarship recipients. She will notify them of our June meeting. We hope they will be able to attend this meeting. Since our regular meeting will fall on Father’s Day, it was decided to have our meeting the Sunday before on June 14.

Under other business, Pavol Rojko brought his tools and installed a deadbolt lock on our storage room door.

Lodge 84, Dallas donates defibrillators to fellow lodges Dear Readers, Members of Lodge 84, Dallas met on May 17, 2026, at Back Country BBQ for their monthly meeting. President Vicki Sims brought the meeting to order at 2:38 p.m. The Pledge e of Allegiance was led by Flag Bearer Charles Nemec, and a moment of silence was held for Bill Kucera, our troops serving our country, and any others needing special intentions.

Secretary Cherri Petr then read the minutes from the last meeting which were approved after some corrections.

She then reported on correspondence received.

President Sims committed on how she and other members attended the District 3 Rally on Sunday, April 26 at Lodge 92, Fort Worth and how there was a good turnout. An update was shared on clearing the storage facility and where some of the items were being put to good use by other organizations.

The donation was approved, and arrangements will be made for delivery.

Honoring Heroes: How Lodge 66, Waco brings joy and honor to local Veterans Lodge 66, Waco brought an abundance of warmth and gratitude to the recent bi-monthly luncheon at Veterans One Stop in Waco, coming together to honor our local veterans and their families.

In a wonderful show of intergenerational teamwork, the Lodge 66 Youth Club and adult lodge poured their hearts into preparing 176 special care bags. Each one was carefully packed with snacks, commemorative pins, and thank-you cards to let our local heroes know just how much they are loved and appreciated.

Elmer Speights, Jr. welcomed the group with an insightful tour of the facilities, sharing the vital ways the center supports veterans and their loved ones. Before the meal and opening prayer, SPJST and Lodge 66 were warmly recognized for their generous donations and contributions to the veterans. It was a beautiful afternoon that reminded everyone present of the joy that comes from wrapping our arms around our veterans and honoring their incredible legacy.

Lodge 84, Dallas: save the date for Czech and Slovak Heritage Day - October 11 Well, it’s that time again for the Czech and Slovak Heritage Day. In my report at the recent lodge meeting, I had

everyone pull out their calendars and save Sunday, October 11, for Heritage Day at Sokol Dallas, 7448 Greenville Avenue in Dallas, Texas.

Admission is $10 per person (ages 16 and under are free of charge). Doors will open at 11 a.m. with activities starting at 12 noon til 6 p.m.

Plans are still in the making, and more details will come out soon. The Dallas Czech Orchestra, Beseda Dancers, and VH Czech School are just a few performers. Other activities include music by Jodie Mikula, food, vendors, raffle, children activities, and much more.

District 7 Director Regina House honored the lodge with her presence and shared that she would soon be traveling to the Home Office in Temple with camp tickets sold by local youth members.

FAC Stacy Bielefeld thanked everyone for bringing baby supplies to the meeting and reminded members that the next donation drive, scheduled for July, will focus on school supplies, while the November drive will benefit local animal shelters with pet supplies.

Reporter Trey Bielefeld reported that the April meeting report appeared in the May 1 edition of the Vestnik on page 21.

Youth Leader Lian Lynn reported that the State Royalty Program is being renamed the SPJST Legacy Leaders Program. The 2026 summer camp will be held June 28 through July 2 at the Hermann Sons Youth Camp in Comfort.

The State Youth Showcase will take place July 24 and 25 in Temple, with a registration deadline of June 15.

Hall Manager Bertrand reported that hall rentals continue to come in steadily.

President Harold Lostak presented Colton the Lodge 139 scholarship, and Lodge 139 member and grandmother Pat Vrazel presented him the Danbury Polka Club Scholarship. We are very proud of Colton and his accomplishments.

A social and meal were enjoyed by all.

President Dennis Hermis called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flag Bearer Zoey Coleman. A moment of silence was observed for Debra Ngo’s mother. May she rest in peace.

Youth Leader Karole Coleman reported camp begins June 28 in Comfort.

She spoke about the Legacy Leaders (formerly called Royalty) contest, which now includes a Tiny Miss and Tiny Mr. SPJST. The food for this year’s State Youth Showcase is sweet rolls.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Pat Schneider thanked all who donated and brought snacks and more for our Veterans. Each family at the meeting wrote thank you notes for their service to all Veterans at Camp Hope. June and July charity donations will be bringing school supplies. All mothers were recognized and photographed.

Sick committee reported Diane Weikel doing better, Mr. Steve Roznosky feeling better, and Kenneth Malota stated he is doing good after a foot injury. Well wishes for all.

New member is Denise Saulnier (sales agent Kerry Herrington).

Under old business, it was clarified that mileage is 50 cents for fraternal.

New business discussions included the District 5 Rally and August lodge meeting are being combined on August 22 at Lodge 88, Houston. Motion was made by J.R. Coleman, seconded by Barbara Linney-Gonzales. Motion caried.

May birthday celebrants were Jack Manchack and Margaret Norris-Guerrero - both on the 24th.

Lodge 151 Wharton-East Bernard honors Milestone Members Lodge 151, Wharton-East Bernard held its quarterly meeting and social on Monday, June 8 at Hungerford Community Center. President JR Schauer called the meeting to order at 6:15 p.m.

After the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, President Schauer recessed the meeting at 6:18 p.m., so we could eat our meal. A fried chicken meal catered

by Ben’s Chuck Wagon was served to 14 members and five guests. President

JR Schauer gave the meal prayer. Delicious desserts were provided by the members.

President JR Schauer convened the meeting at 6:50 p.m. The first order of business was to elect a secretary and fraternal activities coordinator since these two positions weren’t filled at the March meeting. Jeanette Kaminsky made a motion to elect Janie Bucek as secretary and fraternal activities coordinator. The motion was seconded by Gerald Macha, and it was approved.

The March meeting minutes had been given to the members before the meeting. After the minutes had been reviewed, Gerald Macha made a motion to accept them. Jeanette Kaminsky seconded the motion. Motion passed. Alan Pribyl presented the treasurer’s report and gave the April 30 lodge fund management account balance. A motion was made by Dorothy Macha to accept the treasurer’s report. The motion was seconded by Jeanette Kaminsky, and the motion was approved. Glenn Kaminsky reported our lodge fund management account earned nearly $1,400 since January 1.

She presented their pins and thanked them for their longtime membership in SPJST. Director Vahalik remarked she was glad all of the officer positions in our lodge were filled. She reported a lot of things are going on in the Home Office.

Since President/CEO Brian Vanicek is retiring, individuals are being interviewed for his position. She stated each lodge is required to complete a bank account verification form. Communications from the Home Office are mainly being sent by email. Director Vahalik encouraged us to read all of the emails from the Home Office.

Our quarterly Caring Challenge was to donate food items to Share in Wharton. President JR Schauer thanked our members for their donations of food.

Birthday honorees for April, May, and June were recognized. JR Schauer was the only April birthday honoree.

Members with birthdays in June were Edwin Bucek, Glenn and Jeanette Kaminsky, and Alan Pribyl. None of the members had birthdays in May. Names for door prizes were drawn.

Door prize winners were Janie Bucek, Alan Pribyl, Benny and Valeria Hundl, Dorothy Macha, Patsy Zabransky, Jeanette Kaminsky, and Eleanor Spacek.

Lodge 191, Lufkin: proud grandmother recognizes grandson’s achievements Samuel (Sam) Welch of Hemphill, Texas, graduated from Hemphill High School in May 2026 with an impressive record of academic achievement, leadership, and community involvement.

According to his grandmother, Myrtle Welch, Sam is known for his kindness, thoughtfulness, and strong work ethic. Throughout high school, he earned 33 college credit hours through Angelina College while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 95.67 as a full-time student.

Sam was active in numerous activities, including football, basketball, baseball, track, FFA, Welding Society, Bass Club, and Student Council, where he served as president. He also enjoys outdoor activities such as fishing, golfing, and hunting and was recognized as an “Angler of the Year.”

Myrtle shared that Sam is often complimented by teachers, friends, and family members for his caring nature and willingness to help others. She especially appreciates the kindness he shows to younger children and family members.

SPJST invites members, public to State Youth Showcase July 25 in Temple SPJST welcomes families from across Texas to its annual Showcase July 24 and 25 in Temple.

The free statewide event celebrates the creativity, talent, and leadership of Texas youth ages four through 18.

Showcase will take place at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center in Temple.

Admission and parking are free for all guests.

The event runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

SPJST expects 86 youth participants from across Texas.

Frank Horak, director of member engagement, helps plan and host the Showcase each year.

“This year’s Youth Showcase reflects our 2026 theme, United We Shine,” Horak said. “As young members gather from across Texas, they share their talents, celebrate achievements, and demonstrate the friendship, family, and community values that make SPJST strong.”

Youth competitors will present projects in multiple categories, including art, photography, crafts, science, building blocks, desserts, and video Many entries will be displayed for public viewing throughout the event.

Lodge 187, Round Rock celebrates graduate Luke McCarthy

Members and friends of Lodge 187, Round Rock gathered at the H-E-B Center in Cedar Park to celebrate the graduation of longtime lodge member Luke McCarthy. In addition to receiving his diploma, Luke graduated with honors. Luke has been a member of Lodge 187 for his entire life and now joins the adult lodge after many years in the youth club. Watching Luke grow into the remarkable young man he is today has been one of the greatest joys for his family, friends, and fellow lodge members.

Lodge 187 extends its heartfelt congratulations to Luke on this significant achievement. His resilience, hard work, and dedication have earned him this special moment of celebration, and the lodge is proud of all he has accomplished. Saturday highlights live competition in the Talent and Legacy Leaders divisions.

The Talent competition features solo and group performances.

Acts may include singing, dancing, comedy, music, poetry, and other live performances.

One of the event’s biggest highlights is the SPJST Legacy Leaders competition. Legacy Leaders recognizes youth leadership across several age divisions.

The program encourages confidence, communication, and community involvement.

This year also marks a major step forward for SPJST Youth leadership.

The program prepares students for college, careers, and community leadership.

Mr. and Miss SPJST winners will complete yearlong service projects benefiting Texas communities.

Participants will build leadership portfolios and develop practical career skills.

Successful completion earns SPJST’s highest youth honor, SPJST Ambassador.

The program also awards a $2,000 scholarship upon completion and enrollment in higher education.

SPJST Communications Specialist Autumn Baker is a lead developer and mentor in the Ambassador Scholarship Program.

“SPJST believes in investing in youth, and this program builds on that legacy in a new and meaningful way,” Baker said. “The Ambassador Scholarship Program is designed to help youth connect their talents with their future goals.”

The SPJST Ambassador Program was developed with leadership goals in mind to make a positive impact that lasts.

“Leadership is not something learned in theory. It is something that grows through service, mentorship, and stepping into new challenges that refine our

“Whether a student is interested in healthcare, education, business, or skill trades, our goal is to help youth build functional leadership skills to make meaningful impact on our communities for generations to come.”

Linda brings decades of leadership, customer service, and financial experience to her new role. She has been married to her husband, Carlos, for 40 years, and together they have one daughter.

Throughout her career, Linda has built a strong reputation for helping others and serving her community.

A member of SPJST Lodge 38, Kovar, Linda spent 23 years with Home Interiors & Gifts, where she served as a Senior Unit Director. She also devoted more than 12 years to First Convenience Bank (SFBI) as an Assistant Branch Manager. In addition, she currently serves with Royal Tax Solutions as a trained tax preparer.

Her commitment to community service is equally impressive. Linda has been active with the Greater Caldwell County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce since 2019 and is involved in her local faith community through Abundant Church. She now joins Team Insurance as an SPJST Sales Agent, where she looks forward to helping families protect their financial futures.

Nicholas is a member of Lodge 84, Dallas, and a graduate of Nolan Catholic High School. He is the son of Helmuth and Christy Koelzer, and the grandson of Marvin and Sharon Sulak.

Nicholas’ honors include graduating Summa Cum Laude with an honors diploma, membership in the National Honor Society, Amon G. Carter Award, Principles in Engineering Award, SPJST Scholarship, VSPYS Fighting Viking Resilience Award, Outstanding Athlete for Nolan Catholic High School football and track and field teams, and a nomination for Junior Class Prom King.

Nicholas’ future plan is to attend Texas A&M University pursuing a degree in industrial engineering.

Amanda is a member of Lodge 84, Dallas, and a graduate of Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Leadership and Development. She is the daughter of Helmuth and Christy Koelzer, and the granddaughter of Marvin and Sharon Sulak.

Amanda’s honors include graduating Magna Cum Laude and membership in Aggie Sisters for Christ.

Amanda’s future plan is to continue her studies at Texas A&M University Mays Business School, where she will pursue a Master of Science in Business.

The Tiny Mr./Miss is a foundational program for kindergarten to 2nd grade youth, introducing public presentation without a year-of-service obligation. The Little Mr./Miss is a preparatory program for 3rd to 5th grade youth, building early-stage confidence, peer camaraderie, and intermediate public presentation skills without service requirements.The Junior Mr./Miss is a collaborative program for 6th to 8th grade youth, providing an apprenticeship experience with Mr. or Miss on their statewide service initiative. The Mr. and Miss is the premier leadership program empowering 9th to 12th grade youth to spearhead a yearlong community service project. The Mr. and Miss represent the Society during their tenure and once completed will earn our highest honors of SPJST Ambassador. All Legacy Leader titleholders will represent SPJST at public events during their tenure. The Legacy Leader Scholarship Competition is centered on presentation, poise, and the ability to communicate effectively.

On May 3, 2026, Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club members and their families as well as New Tabor adult lodge members cleaned New Tabor Cemetery by picking up trash and debris. Youth club members also placed flags for Memorial Day on Veterans’ graves. This was very meaningful to all who participated.

Hello, Members.

I’m proud to announce I am the first Miss SPJST to host a social media campaign! Follow my story on the official SPJST Facebook page throughout June and July on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

I am excited to report that 3,438 people have already viewed my posts, 65 people have liked my posts, and 10 people have shared them with others.

Seeing so many people interact with and support me is very encouraging. I appreciate everyone taking the time to engage with me on social media. Keep letting me know what you think in the comments section. You can also share the information on your page, but even a simple Like means a lot.

As well, you will see some new additions to my blog. During June and July, my blog will host a main page featuring my “Czech Off Hunger” social media campaign information.

It’s packed with easy, impactful ways you and your lodge can support your communities. From free summer meals to buying Texas brands, there is something for everyone. I have a ton of insightful information, ideas, sources, and pantries so anyone from our youngest to our wisest can help me take care of Texas.

Planning this social media campaign was quite the experience! Home Office Staff Autumn Baker and Kat Mikeska sat down with my mom and me to coordinate the posts. We discussed every detail. From colors to information to the overall message, they helped guide me as I built this educational campaign. We spent time thinking about what we wanted the campaign to look and feel like, as well as the impact I hoped it would have on our you, my audience.

I’ve put a lot of thought and planning into this campaign.

Thanks to a little teamwork, you can see me each week with updates.

I would like to thank Autumn and Kat. I’m grateful to get some hands-on experience in social media management. It’s interesting seeing things from the other side. It’s motivating to know I can make a difference even through Facebook. I am eager to see how each of you takes my research and carries it into your communities, conversations, and everyday lives.

Even the smallest acts can have a Texas-sized impact! I hope this inspires you to learn more, share, and take action with me in helping our local food pantries and food banks.

A quick reminder: Showcase is coming up quick! I hope you signed up, especially all prospective Mr. and Miss SPJSTs. The program is updated, and I would say it’s definitely worth your time.

Not to brag, but because of this program I’ve been published in multiple papers, interviewed on live TV, and nominated for other awards in my community.

I will also be featured in the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB) Alumni Magazine this August. The university was impressed with the food drive I

coordinated with my school district and wanted to share my story.

The program is a lot more than parades now. I’ve had more opportunities this year through SPJST than my sister, Bailee Beckendorf, who was the 20232024 Miss SPJST. Showcase is an opportunity for youth to collect and support each other, and now it’s a gateway for professional achieve-

ments.

To my fellow SPJST members, thank you again for your support. I appreciate you taking time to support me, engage with me on Facebook, and help me take care of Texas.

I hope y’all are having an amazing summer filled with fun, family, and memorable experiences. Don’t forget to look up Summer Meal Sites near you, available at spjst.org/miss. Texas offers free meals to all kids 18 years and younger.

In Alfred “Fred” Hellinger, Jr.

Resolution of Sympathy

Alfred “Fred” Joseph Hellinger, Jr. passed away May 19, 2026, at the age of 66.

Fred passed away in the home he grew up in. His passion and love for working on the farm began when he learned to walk.

Known as Fred, he was a devoted and hard-headed Bohemian that helped everyone. A heart that Fred Hellinger was so big and filled with kindness - never bragging, boasting, or putting on a show. He did what was needed to ensure everyone was taken care of.

He was a farmer, mechanic, caretaker of the Kovar Catholic Church and Cemeteries as well as president of SPJST Lodge 38, Kovar. Most would agree he was President of Kovar. To say he was dedicated is an understatement.

Fred was many things to many people, and his kindness impacted everyone he met.

For the younger generation, we all hope you will follow in his footsteps.

Fred was born on September 14, 1959, to Alfred and Evelyn Hellinger at Orgain Memorial in Bastrop. He was preceded in death by his father and mother. He is survived by his brother, uncles, aunts, numerous cousins, and countless friends.

A visitation and rosary was held Wednesday, May 27 at Marrs Jones Funeral Home in Smithville. The visitation began at 6 p.m. and the vigil and rosary was at 7 p.m.

Funeral service was Thursday, May 28 at Marrs Jones Funeral Home in Smithville. The visitation was at 9 a.m. and the service was at 10 a.m. Burial followed at Barton Creek Cemetery in Kovar. The family hosted food and fellowship at Kovar Hall.

The family asks that memorials and donations be made to St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church Kovar or the charity of one’s choice.

The Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek No. 4, Hallettsville, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincerest and deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, MARVIN J. MIKUSH SR. (affectionately known as Big Marvin, Pops, Dad, and Pawpaw), 75, of Victoria, Texas, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026. Marvin was a man of very few words, but in his final months, his favorites became “so so,” “hurry,” “for now,” and “I want ice cream” — phrases that will forever be cherished by those Marvin Mikush, Sr. who loved him.

He was born on December 21, 1950, to Alvin Mikush and Linda (Holy) Mikush. Marvin married the love of his life, Rosemary Grahmann, on May 20, 1973, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville. Together, they built a life and raised two wonderful children, Marvin Jr. and Melanie.

Marvin was a proud and active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1329. He dedicated 42 years of hard work as a carpenter and operator with Krueger Construction before retiring on September 30, 2016.

After retirement, Marvin enjoyed the simple things in life—hunting, fishing, playing dominoes on Thursday and Friday nights, collecting cans from the local beer drinkers and crushing them.

He loved helping at his son’s house mowing and shredding, and attending bingo on Wednesday nights when he wasn’t working it, and of course, scratching lottery tickets.

Marvin is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 53 years, Rosemary (Grahmann) Mikush; son Marvin Mikush Jr.; daughter Melanie Lott and husband Ryan Lott; granddaughters Taylar Barletta and Makenzie Mikush; grandson Logan Lott; and four greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by his

sister-in-law, Arlene Mikush of Weimar, along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother; grandparents; aunts; uncles; and friends.

Visitation was held Friday, May 18 at 9 a.m. Rosary was at 9:30 a.m. at Cathedral of Our Lady of Victory. Funeral mass followed at Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Arrangements and services were under the personal care of Grace Funeral Homes and Cemeteries in Victoria.

In Memory of Robert Slovak On May 25, 2026, Robert Leon Slovak, a master carpenter whose craftsmanship, precision, and pride ensured he never met a standard he couldn’t raise, laid down his tools for the last time, surrounded by his family in the home that he and his wife built.

Born on October 23, 1942, to Joseph E. Slovak and Janie A. (Nekuza) Slovak of Bardwell, Texas, Robert grew up learn- Robert Slovak ing the value of hard work, helping his parents pick cotton, farm the land, and work cattle on the homestead his grandparents settled when they emigrated from Czechoslovakia. His father and uncle taught him the carpenter’s trade that would become his life’s work and carry him through a long and successful career, while his mother shaped his character with a framework of uncompromising principles he applied to everything he did.

After graduating from St. John’s High School, Robert joined the United States Army and was stationed in Fort Polk, Louisiana, during the Vietnam Era. He was in the Military Police and served his country with pride.

Returning home from his service, Robert met Merrijo Gleason from Hico, who was working in Ennis as a schoolteacher. He sold his horse to buy her a ring, and they were soon married. This

August would have marked 58 years, and though he did confess to missing the horse, it seems he remained happy with the trade.

In 1970, Robert started Slovak Construction, which continues business to this day. He took immense pride in building quality custom homes in the Ennis, Dallas, and Lake Richland Chambers areas. Exactingly detailed in his carpentry work, he made sure every home was built to the highest standards.

Robert and Merrijo also owned and operated The Sports Connection and Ennis Gym for more than 20 years. Having built his family home on the same farm he grew up on, he tended to the crops, the cattle, and the land itself with diligence - the only way he knew how.

Robert loved to work, always keeping himself busy and productive; but he also made time for his other enjoyments, such as deer hunting with friends and family and attending dances with his wife.

His Czech heritage was a cornerstone of who he was; he loved polka music and pivo, and he took his family on multiple trips to the Czech Republic over the years to experience their roots firsthand.

He was a member of the KC, KJT, SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis, and St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister Anna Lee Toth; sister Patsy Odlozil; and grandson Tyler Slovak.

Robert is survived by his wife, Merrijo Slovak; son Joseph Slovak and wife Angela of Plano; son John Slovak and wife Wendy of Ennis; daughter Rebecca Slovak of Ennis; daughter Allison Slovak of Ennis; grandchildren Zachary, Vivian, Jacob, Matthew, Charley, and Robbie; sisters Mary Jane Odlozil and Joyce Slovak of Ennis; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Robert leaves behind a legacy of love, tradition, and achievement, and he will be deeply missed.

Those wishing to honor Robert’s memory are invited to make a donation to Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange.

Visitation was held Sunday, May 31 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the J.E. Keever Mortuary of Ennis with rosary at 4 p.m.

When 25 Czech-Texans gathered in La Grange on December 28, 1896, they carried more than a desire for independence from a national organization. They carried a vision of a society built not merely on insurance premiums, but on genuine care for one another.

That vision became reality on June 20, 1897, when the First Convention of the Slovanská Podporující Jednota Státu Texas was held and the SPJST was formally born. From the very beginning, the founders understood that membership in this society meant something deeper than a policy. It meant a promise.

That promise was written into the original charter: to extend benevolent assistance to members and those dependent upon them, and to provide relief for the widows and children of deceased members. These were not afterthoughts.

They were founding principles, central to the identity of this organization from its earliest days.

For over 128 years, SPJST has honored that commitment. Through generations of Czech-Texan families and the growth of lodges across the state, the mission has remained constant: no member should face life's hardest moments alone.

The names listed on this page represent that enduring legacy. They were lodge members, neighbors, and friends who placed their trust in this society, and SPJST is honored to have stood beside them.

That legacy continues in every lodge that gathers, every family supported, and every new member who joins this society.

Preserving the legacy of East Bell County Rural Schools Good Afternoon.

As many of you know, we worked for years preserving the history of the rural schools of East Bell County and during our research, the photos of original historical markers used in our book Rural Schools of East Bell County were faded, damaged, or nearly unreadable at the time.

Using newer restoration technology (AI), we have now been able to digitally reconstruct and clean up several of these historic school markers to near-original condition. Some of the restored markers include: Meeks School Red Ranger School Lost Prairie School North Elm School Casey School Thompson School Seaton School Joe Lee (Mud Springs) School Several of these markers were so deteriorated that many names and dates could barely be read until additional family records and historical references were compared and verified.

There may still be additional East Bell County or other Bell County rural school markers that were not included in the book. If anyone has photographs, copies, or information concerning other any Bell County school markers, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Even poor-quality or faded photos may now be restorable.

Please feel free to email any images or information you may have.

These schools and communities helped shape generations of Bell County

families and hopefully, more school markers are in someone's possession.

Additionally, we received some additional photos and names of students in the group school photos and these are included. Should you have found additional photos of the East Bell County Schools , we’d love to receive a scanned copy of those photos including names of those you can identify.

Even though AI has improved significantly in the past couple of years, getting old photos enhanced through AI, in our opinion, we still think AI needs improvement so all faces remain exactly as they are on the original photos; therefore, we are not actively trying to enhance the old photos at this time. Maybe in the next year or sooner, the technology will be there to enable all old photos to be flawlessly enhanced without distorting or changing facial features.

The school photos included are being sent to you for your comments if they are accurate with the names of students and of the approximate year photos were taken Thank you for your support in helping us preserve our ancestors history.

Learn Czech online through Aleš Svoboda on track to become first Czech Blinn College this fall aboard the ISS Have you ever wanted to learn Czech, improve your language skills, or reconnect with your heritage? Blinn College District will once again offer online Czech language courses for the Fall 2026 semester, giving students across Texas and beyond the opportunity to study from home.

From Radio Prague International June 9, 2026 Czech astronaut Aleš Svoboda is on track to become the first Czech citizen to visit the International Space Station.

The European Space Agency has signed an agreement with the US space company VAST that could see him fly to the ISS next year, and take on the key role of pilot.

Prime Minister Andrej Babiš announced the news on Monday, saying Aleš Svoboda is expected to fly to the International Space Station aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft next year.

According to Svoboda, the pilot role is one of the most significant aspects of the mission.

“The fact that the Czech Republic will have the role of pilot within the crew is absolutely crucial. There are only around two dozen Crew Dragon pi-

Unlike other crew members, the pilot is directly involved in operating the spacecraft and requires much more extensive training, he says: “The training will take place primarily in the United States and will involve preparation with SpaceX, NASA, and other partner organizations. SpaceX is responsible because it provides the Crew Dragon spacecraft and the Falcon 9 launch vehicle, so a large part of the training will take place at its facilities.

However, the mission must still be approved by the International Space Station's international partners.

“The crew will consist of four members. Last week, France announced a similar agreement with VAST, so the crew still needs to be completed before reaching its final size. The full crew will then appear before an international panel led by NASA, which is expected

to approve the mission.”

The launch is currently planned for next summer aboard a Falcon 9 rocket.

But space missions are rarely launched exactly on schedule, says Jiří Dušek, director of the Brno Observatory.

“A specific date has been mentioned, but the reality is that projects like these are often delayed by weeks and sometimes even months. So we can say it should happen next summer, but it could quite possibly slip to the autumn.”

The Czech government and the European Space Agency say the mission's greatest value lies in the scientific and technological research it will enable.

According to Dušek, thirteen Czech experiments are expected to be carried out aboard the ISS, helping Czech scientists test new ideas and technologies in space.

“These experiments focus primarily on biology, including the human body.

There is research into human stress, for example, as well as AI-based models of human physiology. There are also technological experiments, such as research into nanorobots and their behaviour in the space environment, as well as cancer research.”
