Lodge 24, Cyclone Erects New Sign

For more than 50 years, the “Coca Cola Sign” at the intersection of Farm Roads 485 and 964 has pointed the way to the SPJSTLodge 24, Cyclone - Flag Hall in Cyclone, Texas, where friends and relatives would meet for a night of music and dancing.

But through the years, the sign has begun to show a lot of wear and tear, and it was time for it to come down and be replaced with a new sign. The old sign will be missed by many who came to know it as a symbol of fun and fellowship.

Lodge 24 President Daniel Wilde built a frame for the new sign and got it all ready to be placed in its new home, replacing the old sign. Thanks to the help of good friends from Lodge 47, Seaton Eugene Brenek and son Andrew Brenek, President Wilde got the sign in place and ready to greet many new visitors to Lodge 24.

So the next time you come to Cyclone, look for our new sign at the intersection, showing you the way to more fun and good times. Linda M. Wilde, Treasurer —SPJST—

Our first Day of Caring for 2022 was held Sunday, May 1 in the ballroom. The lodgewide day of service was so amazing, and we helped so many kids in our local area. We partnered with Birthday Bundles.

Birthday Bundles for Kids is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides birthday celebration supplies as well as holiday supplies for families in need. They asked that we help purchase and assemble summer bundles that will be sent home to provide some summer fun to the kids. These were a huge hit last year when we did them, and teachers commented how much the kids looked forward to them. Our goal was to make at least 200 bags to be distributed to local kids. Thank you again for making this possible! I love that our lodge comes together and makes such a difference for so many. Submitted by, Aaron Rigamonti, President —SPJST—

How to host a memorable Memorial Day BBQ

Memorial Day is a bittersweet day on the calendar. Memorial Day is a day to pay homage to the brave men and women who lost their lives defending the United States. However, over time, Memorial Day has evolved into the unofficial beginning of summer.

As temperatures start to heat up, so, too, do backyard grills. In fact, grilling is an essential component of a good Memorial Day barbecue. There are many other ways to put your mark on Memorial Day cookouts as well. These ideas can make your event all the more memorable.

Keep it simple

Guests have certain expectations when they arrive at Memorial Day barbecues, and simplicity often tops the list. A simple playlist of recognizable, popular songs playing in the background, classic yard games like cornhole or horseshoes, sack races or water balloon tosses for the kids, and tasty classic fare on the grill, including burgers, hot dogs and chicken drumsticks, is likely all you need to put smiles on the faces of your guests.

Prep the grill and yard in advance

Memorial Day may be the first big event of the season, and chances are that the grill and yard could use some attention. Make sure all the burners are clean and working properly. Clear clutter from the yard and give patio furniture a thorough cleaning. Add outdoor furniture if you need more seating. Have a spare propane tank on hand so you won’t run out of fuel. If you have a pet, be sure that the yard is cleared of waste.

In addition to cleaning the yard, stock up on citronella candles or insect repellents. Bugs may want to join the festivities, too.

Create a red, white and blue burger

No barbecue is complete without delicious burgers cooking over an open flame. Those burgers can give an extra nod to the Stars and Stripes by showcasing the nation’s well-recognized colors. Place your grilled burger patty on your bun of choice. Top it with raw or grilled tomato slices (red), a slather of mayonnaise or a more dressed up aioli (white), and some blue cheese crumbles (blue). Carry the color theme over into a side salad as well, with your favorite greens topped with beets, blueberries, and chunks of feta cheese.

Serve buffet style

One of the easiest ways to serve a number of people is to put the food out on long tables so that guests can pick and choose what they want. Place condiments and beverages in a separate area to keep the line flowing.

Separate beverages

Make sure that alcoholic beverages are kept separate from non-alcoholic options so that children do not get into the wrong drinks. Coolers placed on opposite sides of the yard can eliminate confusion.

It doesn’t take much to make Memorial Day barbecues enjoyable. With delicious food and close friends and family in attendance, fun is guaranteed. (MS) —SPJST—

The One Spring Festival in Texas That’s Worthy of Your Bucket List Every Year

From www.onlyinyourstate.com/texas April 25, 2022 by Katie Lawrence

Famous for its spectacular bluebonnet fields, Ennis also boasts a rich cultural heritage as an early Czech settlement. You can learn about and pay homage to this fascinating history at the National Polka Festival in Texas, a yearly celebration of Czech customs, music, dance, and food. Come spend your Memorial Day Weekend eating kolaches and learning how to polka dance. You’ll never forget the experience!

Every year on Memorial Day Weekend, thousands of people converge on the tiny town of Ennis for the National Polka Festival.

Held annually for the past 55 years, the festival celebrates the town’s rich Czech heritage with traditional foods, song and dance, religious services, and an outdoor market.

The festival will take place from Friday, May 27 through Sunday, May 29.

Between the live bands, kolache eating contest, Saturday morning parade, and a plethora of other activities, the whole family is sure to have a blast.

Speaking of live music, there will be a total of 14 polka bands playing across three spacious halls.

One of the groups is Grammy Awardwinning Brave Combo, and they sound even better in person!

Festivities kick off on Friday night with the all-important King and Queen Dance Contest.

Then, the rest of the weekend is filled with Czech customs that delight all the senses, from authentic cuisine to a beer garden and so much more.

Dance the night away, sporting traditional Czech attire if you wish — visitors are welcome and encouraged to do so!

If you’ve never done polka dancing before, don’t worry - the locals are happy to help you find your footing.

You’ll get the chance to try all sorts of Czech delicacies, from klobase (sausage) to dumplings and everything in between.

Prepare for a culinary trip around the world without ever leaving Texas!

Of course, no Czech festival would be complete without kolaches, and they’re in no short supply here. What’s your favorite filling?

Don’t leave without taking a stroll through the marketplace to check out all the local businesses selling their wares.

From hand-poured candles to homemade jewelry, you’ll see every type of artisan good imaginable.

Visit the National Polka Festival website or Facebook page for more information, including ticket prices.

Types of Unusual Scholarships

There are many unusual scholarships available to the intrepid student, and it would take a dissertation to outline each and every one of them. However, we can take the time to look at a few of these unique and often times peculiar avenues of financial aid.

Unusual scholarships are often based on odd characteristics or specific talents. For example, there is a dedicated scholarship program, the Frederick and Mary F. Beckley Left Handed Scholarship, that awards between $1,000 and $1,500 annually to south-paw students attending Juniata College.

One of the more unique scholarships out there is the Stuck At Prom Scholarship sponsored by Duck Brand Duct Tape. Applicants for this scholarship must attend their high school prom in dresses and suits made entirely from Duck Brand duct tape. While this sounds outlandish, the award is $2,500! Not too shabby for a duct tape dress. There are many wild and wooly scholarship opportunities to be found if you do a little leg work, and keep yourself open to the bizarre and unusual.

However, not all of the less obvious avenues for scholarship money involve cooky outfits or bizarre talents. Many off-the-beaten-path scholarships are much more sensible, if not more widely advertised. Many heritagebased scholarships are available through national clubs and organizations promoting the advancement of members of their ethnic community. The National Italian American Foundation, for example, offers annual scholarships of $2,000 to $12,000 to students of Italian-American heritage. Many other national foundations, like the German-American Heritage Foundation and the Japanese American Citizens League offer similar scholarships awards every year.

Students with particular interest will find a variety of scholarship opportunities devoted to their specific passion. Bird watchers, as an example, can benefit from the Royal Naval Bird Watching Society’s scholarship. Avid accordionists may find they qualify for the Arizona Accordion Clubs annual scholarship award. Whatever your field of interest, or hobby to which you are devoted, you can likely find a scholarship program dedicated to helping you finance your college education.

How to Find Unusual Scholarships Finding unusual or odd scholarship programs is easier than you may think. An internet search will reveal a large number of helpful results. You can search by unusual interest or activity, tagging it with the word scholarship, as in ‘Barbecue scholarship’ which results in the information that Famous Dave’s sponsors a $4,000 annual scholarship program. Your high school counselor and the financial aid office of the college you plan on attending may also be able to put you on the trail of an off-the-beaten-path scholarship.

In this fast-paced, modern world, it may be easy to forget about your local library. There are many books on the topic of scholarships that can help you locate valuable resources beyond the standard scholarship arena. Of course, make sure you check up on the validity of each scholarship that interests you. Call the contact number or search the web for the award. If everything looks good, then get that application in, pronto.

Unusual scholarships are like any other scholarship when you get right down to it. Their subject matter may sometimes seem a little off-the-wall, but they are being made available by sponsors who all have one thing in common. They want to help students make their college dreams a reality.
